What is Week Zero?

Here is some history on Week "0" and the Schedule and Where to Watch!

The first week of college football is called Week 0 because it is technically not part of the regular season. The NCAA rulebook states that the regular season for Division I FBS football teams must begin on the first Saturday before Labor Day. However, the NCAA has a rule that allows teams that play in Hawaii to play a game on the Saturday before Labor Day, as long as the game is played in Hawaii. This is known as the "Hawaii Rule."

The term "Week 0" was coined by sportswriters to refer to these games that are played before the start of the regular season. It is a way of differentiating these games from the games that are played in Week 1, which is the official start of the regular season.

In recent years, there has been a growing trend of teams playing games in Week 0, even if they are not located in Hawaii. This is due to a number of factors, including the desire to get a head start on the season, the opportunity to play a marquee opponent on national television, and the financial benefits that come with playing a game in Week 0.

The NCAA has not taken any steps to stop the trend of teams playing games in Week 0, and Week 0 is here to stay!

Here are some of the reasons why teams might choose to play a game in Week 0:

*To get a head start on the season. Teams that play in Week 0 have an extra week to prepare for their next game. This can be especially important for teams that are playing a tough schedule.

*To play a marquee opponent. Playing a big-name opponent on national television can give a team a lot of exposure. This can help to increase ticket sales, donations, and recruiting.

*To get financial benefits. Teams that play in Week 0 often receive a larger share of the television revenue than teams that play in Week 1. This is because there is less competition for viewers in Week 0.

Whether or not you agree with the practice of playing games in Week 0, it is clear that it is here to stay. As long as there are financial benefits to be gained, teams will continue to play games in this unofficial week of the college football season.

Two Left in GHSA Sate Football Playoffs - What Do You Know about Richmond & Jenkins Football Matchups?

The Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. tomorrow for the Wildcats of Richmond Hill High School and the Warriors of Jenkins High School in the GHSA State football semi-finals. The Wildcats will stay in the Hill and the Warriors will hit the war path.

Allatoona at Richmond Hill

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Wildcat Stadium, Richmond Hill

Records, rankings: Allatoona is 10-2-1, the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAAAAA and No. 7; Richmond Hill is 9-3, the No. 1 seed from 2-AAAAAA and unranked.

Last meeting: This is the teams' first meeting.

Things to know: Richmond Hill (opened in 1986) is in the semifinals for the first time. Allatoona (opened in 2008) is in the final four for the first time since its 2015 state championship season and third time overall. Allatoona rushed for 258 yards and held Coffee to 106 total yards in a 24-0 win last week. Marcus Taylor had a season-high 88 yards and a touchdown. The leading rusher is Alex Wilson, who had 77 against the Trojans and has 1,227 for the season. Allatoona completed just one pass, a 38-yard touchdown from Dante Marshall to Asante Das. Marshall has 1,668 passing yards and Das has 1,039 receiving yards for the season. Richmond Hill had not beaten a top-10 team from its classification since 1996 until knocking off No. 8 Lanier 48-34 and No. 4 Valdosta 16-14 the past two weeks. The Wildcats get two-thirds of their offense from a running game led by Jalen Rouse, who had for 84 yards against Valdosta last week and has 1,754 yards for the season, including 488 yards and eight TDs in three playoff games. Tyler Coleman (986 passing yards for the season) threw a 13-yard TD pass to Isaiah Allen for the winning score against Valdosta with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

Jenkins at Crisp County

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Cougar Den, Cordele

Records, rankings: Jenkins is 12-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 3-AAA and No. 7; Crisp County is 10-3, the No. 1 seed from 1-AAA and No. 6.

Last meeting: This is the teams' first meeting.

Things to know: Jenkins and Crisp County are undefeated against Class AAA opponents, and neither has lost by more than five points. Jenkins is playing in its first semifinal since 1966 and the first for any Savannah public school since Savannah High in 1969. The last Savannah public school to win a semifinal was 1962 Tompkins in the Georgia Interscholastic Association before the GHSA integrated its membership. Neither Jenkins nor Crisp has played in a state final, although Crisp County predecessor Cordele High won the 1951 Class B championship. Jenkins has a punishing defense that's recorded 37 sacks and hasn't allowed more than 14 points in a game during its 11-game winning streak. Taurus Simmons (committed to West Virginia) has 23.5 tackles for losses. Damazzio Harris has rushed for 1,656 yards, at least 100 in each playoff game, including 196 last week against North Murray. Patrick Blake has thrown for 1,823 yards with 22 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Crisp's offense comes primarily from RB Marquise Palmer (1,396 yards rushing) and QB A.J. Lofton (954 rushing, 761 passing). Guard Colton Oliver has made 50 starts on the offensive line. Crisp gets 99 percent of its rushing and passing yards and 75 percent of its tackles from underclassmen.

It's that time of year or I like to say, the icing on the cake, THE PLAYOFFS!

Bethesda will play this Friday, November 15 vs Carolina Academy at Daffin Park beginning at 7:30 pm in the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) 1 A Semifinals. The winner of this game will play the winner of Thomas Heyward and PeeDee Academy in the State Championship game next Saturday, November 23 at Benedict College beginning at 12:00 pm.

The Memorial Day School Matadors have secured a home game for the first round of the Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA) AA State Playoffs. The Matadors defeated Robert Toombs Christian Academy on Friday night (34-32) to earn the runner-up spot in Region 2AA. The Westwood Wildcats from Camilla will travel to the Garden City Stadium this Friday, November 15^th for a 7:30 PM kickoff. The winner of this contest will travel to Gatewood in Eatonton for the Elite Eight game next Friday, November 22^nd.

St. Andrews School locked a playoff spot in the GISA a couple of weeks as the GISA 2AA region regular season champion. The Lions will have a bye this week and host a quarterfinal game at St. Andrew's School on November 22 vs. Briarwood at 7:30 p.m. Good luck to all our GISA and SCISA teams.

Can you believe eleven weeks of high school football has come and gone? Most teams will wrap up their season games this weekend as some will start playoffs. We have to send out a big congratulation to Richmond Hill High School, St. Andrew's School, and Bethesda, which have claimed the regular-season region crowns so far. This week's games kick off this Tuesday night as Beach has to make a game up from earlier this season. We will know who is in the state football playoffs and who is out after this week's games. Benedictine Military High School's JROTC Raider Team Wins State Headed to JROTC Nationals - STATE CHAMPIONS!  Congratulations to the Cadet JROTC Raider team for shooting Benedictine Military School's first JROTC Raider Georgia State Championship this past weekend on October 26 at Spaulding High School. 

Raider Competitions are athletic competitions held at JROTC programs around the world. Events take place outdoors and usually consist of individual strength test (push-ups, tire-drag, obstical course, etc), distance team running events, first aid events, and some form of rope bridge contstruction/crossing. Individual events may vary.

The National JROTC Competition is this weekend and is The  a three-day event that consists of the 1-day All-Service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines) Raider Challenge Championships and the two-day Army JROTC "Raider Nationals". The event takes place at Gerald Lawhorn Boy Scout Camp in Molena, Georgia. March on #Cadets!

"18" Local Teams Keep Bouncing in State Basketball Playoffs

Here we go as the ball bounces again for this week for "18" Savannah Georgia local prep hoops teams. It all will start tomorrow night for the Bethesda Blazers in the South Carolina Schools Association Quarterfinals.

The Georgia High School Association teams take the court on Wednesday and Thursday. The Georgia Independent School Association teams head into the semifinals on Friday. Win and you earn the right to play for the GISA championship on Saturday. Good luck to all our local teams in a hunt to bring the "SHIP" back to the C-Port!

For most teams though, it is for seeding for region tournaments and a better chance to win and advance to make the state playoffs. There are three games left for most teams and here is where they stand. Georgia High School Association standings are off the GHSA website and updated at 6 pm on January 23, 2019. Georgia Independent Schools Association from the GISA website, Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association, and South Carolina Independent Schools Association team records are from MaxPreps as of the same time and date. The high school football season always flies by. The dreams in August of reaching the state playoffs has come true for fifteen teams. We will most likely add three teams from the GHSA Class A Private bracket after the power rankings are finalized on Wednesday November 7th. Five Things I Learned After the 5th Week of Savannah Area 2018 High School Football

1. Benedictine is Benedictine – after two region wins over Groves and Savannah by a combined 131-0, the Cadets are the team to beat. The Cadets are the “Big Dog on the Block” in Region 3 AAA.

2. Southeast Bulloch was the previous team to beat. Jenkins took over that spot last year. Now Benedictine is in the region. The Yellow Jackets came back and beat Islands to state, don't count them out. Then beat Beach last week 42-7. Don't count them out yet.

3. Jenkins proved winning, and experience helps in a close game. Last Friday against Windsor Forest

the Warriors were losing 9-8 after three quarters. This was a big early region game for both teams. Well experience in the fourth quarter helped Jenkins found a way to come back to take the lead and hold off a Knight late score and a program trying to step up to the level of the favorite teams in Region 3-AAA.

4. Region 3-A Division A is one of the top divisions in Georgia with three local teams ranked in the GHSA Class A Private school sector. Georgia High School Football Daily released it’s composite rankings and Calvary sits at 4; Savannah Country Day ranked 9, and Savannah Christian enters at 10. Throw a rejuvenated Claxton Tiger team coached by Tony Welch, it’s going to be one of the best regions in the state to follow. All three teams will battle each other in October.

5. Calvary Specialty Sports Complex and the New War Memorial Stadium is Friday Night Lights. These two fields are a great high school venue for local high school football in Savannah Georgia. They are fan friendly but most of all something Savannah has needed for long time, brand new playing surfaces and stadiums. Who benefits from this brand new trend? Of course, our student-athletes and fans do. The excitement to compete with on top notch sites makes the experience of participating in high school football exciting I can’t wait to see Benedictine, Islands, Groves, and Savannah High on site fields to be built. This is definitely going to bring back home-field advantage. You Gotta Love It!
