One of the most eminent writers of India, Sunil Gangopadhyay was born on September 7, 1934 in the village Maichpara of Faridpur District, in present day Bangladesh. Equally adept in prose and poetry, he is regarded as one of the most prolific and effervescent writers of modern Bengali literature. Author of many unforgettable poems, short stories, novels and plays, he brings his considerable talents to reviews, and comments as well as literature for children. His magnum opus and winner of the 1985 Sahitya Akademi Award Sei samaya is the result of in-depth research work into the cross-currents of socio-intellectual life during the 19th century Bengal renaissance. But it is poetry that has remained his first love, and time and again he raised his voice in distinctive verses to protest against social evils. His sensitivity, vigorous expression, and master craftsmanship has earned him many awards including Bankim Puraskar, 1982; Sahitya Akademi Award, 1985; and Ananda Puraskar (twice). He is the executive board member of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, for 1998-2002. The Library of Congress has in its collection one hundred and eighty titles by him including translations and one title on his works.

Annada Shankar Ray was born in 1904 at Dhenkanal, Orissa. He graduated in English from Ravenshaw College. His father had shifted base from their ancestral village of Rameswarpur near Dhamnagar in Bhadrak of Orissa, following a family feud. His family roots go back to the 'Ghosh Mahashayas' who migrated to Rameswarpur from Kotarang near Howrah as a part of Todarmal's contingent during Akbar's reign.
He topped the list of Indian Civil Service examinees in 1927. He had failed to make the mark in the previous year being cut-off by one rank. It is said that he promised to his family and friends that if only one person was to be selected for ICS the next year, it would be himself, and he proved it. Incidentally he was the first ICS officer from the territory later forming the state of Orissa.
After serving in various administrative posts, he sought voluntary retirement in 1951 to devote himself to literary pursuits. Ray was a Gandhian in politics and Rabindranath Tagore inspired his literature
A Bengali rendering of a short story by Tolstoy and an appraisal of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s essay Narir Mulya marked his debut on the literary scene at the age of 16.
His first published book was Tarunya (1928), which gave him a footing as an essayist. His first two novels were Asamapika and Agun Niye Khela. As an essayist, he was urbane and sophisticated and combined in his craft two different styles of prose, represented by Tagore and Pramatha Choudhury.
A significant breakthrough in his literary career came with the publication of Pathe Prabase, a brilliant diary of his Europe trip, in 1931.
Ray also established himself as a short-story writer. His collections include Prakritir Parihas (1934), Man Pavan (1946), Kamini Kanchan (1954) and Katha.
He received the Vidyasagar Smriti Award from the state government and the Padma Bhushan. He was made a fellow of the Sahitya Akademi in 1989. The Visva Bharati conferred on him the Desikottama and an honorary D.Litt. He also received the Rabindra Puraskar, the Ananda Puraskar twice and the prestigious Zaibunnisa Award of Bangladesh
He was a bitter opponent of the partition of 1947 and wrote several bengali poems criticising it. Most notable is "Teler shishi bhaanglo bole khukur pare raag karo". Among his many essays, the book "Banglar Reneissance" has an analytical history of the cultural and social revolution in bengal. His married Leela Ray, an Indianized American lady with literary talent. Annada Shankar's most famous work is "Pathe Prabaase" - a diary of his Europe trip in 1931.
From amongst his other great works in Oriya, the poetry "Sabita" finds place in higher studies of the language at College level, making him one of the rare poets to have the distinction of getting such acclaim from two different language speaking states of India.
He died in Kolkata on 28 October 2002.

Balaichand began writing poetry from adolescence. Among his books of poems are Banafuler Kavita (1929), Natun Banke (1940), Angarpani (1940), Karakamalesu (1949), and Banafuler Byanga Kavita (1958). He wrote in a variety of forms, including prose-poems, sonnet and haiku, etc His poems are inspired by nature, love and self-realisation. Balaichand also wrote stories, novels, plays, essays, and became famous for the variety of his fiction. Much of his writing is drawn from his experience as a physician. He wrote about more than fifty novels and six hundred short stories. His prominent novels include Trnakhanda (1935), Baitarani Tire (1936), Kichhuksan (1937), Dvairath (1937), Mrgaya (1940), Nirmok (1940), Jangam (3 Parts, 1943 & 1945), Agni (1946), Dana (3 Parts, 1948, 1950 and 1955 respectively), Sthavar (1051), Agnishvar (1959), Trivarna (1963), Prachchhana Mahima (1967), and Uday Asta (2 Parts, 1974). The trilogy, Dana, is a champu, composed in both prose and verse.

Balaichand's stories are generally very brief and may be called anugalpa (little stories). Nevertheless, they touch a deep chord in readers. He also wrote sketches, fantasies, satires, etc. His stories have been included in Banafuler Galpa (1936), Bindubisarga (1944), Adrshyaloke (1946), Anugamini (1958), Durbin (1961), Bahuvarna (1976) etc. Balaichand also wrote two biographical plays: Shrimadhusudan (1933) and Vidyasagar (1934). His other plays include Madhyabitta (1943), Dashbhan (1944), Bandhanmochan (1948), and Trinayan (1976).

In 1968 Balaichand became president of the Banga Sahitya Sammelan. In recognition of his contribution to literature he was awarded the Sharatsmriti Puruskar (1951), Rabindra Award (1962), and the Jagattarini Medal of Viswa-Bharati University (1967). He was awarded the DLitt (1973) by Jadavpur University and the Padmabhusan (1975) by the government of India. He died in Kolkata on 9 February 1979. [Begum Akter Kamal]

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee also known as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was one of the greatest novelists and poets of India. He is famous as author of Vande Mataram, the national song of India.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was born on June 27, 1838 in the village Kantalpara of the 24 Paraganas District of Bengal. He belonged to a family of Brahmins. The word 'Bankim Chandra' in Bengali means 'the moon on the second day of the bright fortnight'. Bankim Chandra's father Yadav Chandra Chattopadhyaya was in government service. After his birth he was posted to Midnapur as Deputy Collector.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee had his early education in Midnapur. He was a brilliant student. After his early education in Midnapur Bankim Chandra Chatterji joined the Mohsin College at Hoogly and studied there for six years. Apart from his textbooks, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, used to read other books in his leisure time. He was very much interested in the study of Sanskrit. His study of Sanskrit stood him in good stead. Later, when he wrote books in Bengali his knowledge of Sanskrit helped him immensely.

In 1856, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee joined the Presidency College in Calcutta. In 1857, there was a strong revolt against the rule of East India Company but Bankim Chandra Chatterjee continued his studies and passed his B.A. Examination in 1859. The Lieutenant Governor of Calcutta appointed Bankim Chandra Chatterjee as Deputy Collector in the same year. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was in Government service for thirty-two years and retired in 1891. He was a very conscientious worker.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was married when he was only eleven . At that time his wife was only five years old. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was only twenty two when his wife died. After some time he married again. His second wife was Rajlakshmi Devi. They had three daughters but no son.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee began his literary career as a writer of verse. He then turned to fiction. Durgeshnandini, his first Bengali romance, was published in 1865. His famous novels include Kapalkundala (1866), Mrinalini (1869), Vishbriksha (1873), Chandrasekhar (1877), Rajani (1877), Rajsimha (1881), and Devi Chaudhurani (1884). Bankim Chandra Chatterjee most famous novel was Anand Math (1882). Anand Math contained the song "Bande Mataram", which was later adopted as National Song.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wanted to bring about a cultural revival of Bengal by stimulating the intellect of the Bengali speaking people through literary campaign. With this end in view he brought out monthly magazine called Bangadarshan in 1872.

Bankim Chatterjee was superb story-teller, and a master of romance. No Bengali writer before or since has enjoyed such spontaneous and universal popularity as Chatterjee. His novels have been translated in almost all the major languages of India. He passed away on April 8, 1894.

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, the man who has woven magic with his words and some unputdownable series of writings, knew Bengal thoroughly. A master whose lucid and unsanskritized vocabulary and simple style of writing appeared to be a welcome break for the readers, from the tradition of that time. He gave the rural Bengal a character in itself, a character of simplicity yet strength. .

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was born on 15th September 1876, in Debanandapur, Hooghly District. He spent his childhood in his maternal uncle's home in Bhagalpur. In the year 1894, he passed the Entrance Examination from TN Jubilee Collegiate School and was admitted to FA class but was unable to continue his further education because of the poor financial condition.

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, had a varied career. He started of being an Assistant Settlement officer, in the Baneli Estate. Subsequently, he worked in Calcutta High Court as a Translator and thereafter, as a Clerk in the Accounts Department in Burma Railway. He was also a member of the Bengal Congress and took part in the Non-Cooperation movement. He was later appointed the President of Howrah District Congress.

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is considered to be an author, who understood the Bengal villages the best. His works have a rural essence, as it speaks of the simple day to day life stories of the families, living far away from the cities in the tranquility of nature, growing old among the rivers, trees and farm lands. He wrote of the women very highly and talked about their situation in a patriarchal society frankly and honestly. He voiced his protest against the social discrimination, injustices and superstitions that went on in the name of religion.

His first novel 'Badadidi'(1907), made him instantly popular among the readers. 'Bindur chhele'(1913), 'Parinita'(1914), 'Baikunther will'(1916), 'Devdas'(1917), 'Srikanta'(Part I-IV, 1917-1933), 'Charirtrahin'(1917) are few of his other popular novels. His novel 'Pather Dabi' (1926), was however, banned by the British government for its revolutionary theme. For children he wrote a series of stories and novels, which include the popular 'Ramer Shumati' and the short stories about 'Lalu and his friends'. A large number of successful films have been made and are still made on his stories, namely, 'Devdas', 'Parinita', 'Srikanta' and so on.

He received several awards for his contribution to Bengali Literature. 'Kuntalin puraskar'(1903), 'Jagattarini Svarna Padak'(1923), membership of 'Bangiya Sangeet Parishad'(1934) and an honorary D.litt by the Dhaka University in the year 1936.

Bengal suffered the irreparable loss when he passed away on 16th January. 1938.

Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay was born at Labpur, Birbhum district, West Bengal in 23 July 1898. He is one of the leading Bengali novelists.He was son of Haridas Bandyopadhyay and Prabhabati Debi. He passed the Matriculation examination in 1916 and took admission in the intermediate class at St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta.He learned to see the world from various angles. He seldom rose above the matter soil and his Birbhum exists only in time and place. He had never been a worshipper of eternity. Tarasankar’s chief contribution to Bengal literature is that he dared writing unbiased. He wrote what he believed. He wrote what he observed.Tarasankar experimented in his novels with the relationships, even so called illegal, of either sexes. He proved that sexual relation between man and women sometimes dominate to such an extent that it can take an upperhand over the prevailing laws and instructions of society. He wrote 65 novels, 53 story-books, 12 plays, 4 essay-books, 4 autobiographies and 2 travel stories. Some of his novel are depicted as cenema by movie makers like Satyajit Ray.Tarasankar is a notable man of wisdom, he was awarded Rabindra Puraskar, Sahitya Akademi award, Jnanpith Award, and Padma Bhushan.And he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1962 and the Padma Bhushan in 1969.Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay was died in 14 September 1971.Tarasankar will be remembered for his potential to work with the vast panorama of life where life is observed with care and the judgment is offered to the reader.

Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay (shIshhe.rndu mukhopaadhyaaY) was born on 2nd November,1935 in the Mymensing district of what is now Bangladesh. His father used to work in the Railways, and Shirshendu spent his childhood in many different places following his father. Memories of these places found their ways in many writings of Shirshendu. He passed Intermediate from the Victoria College and then took an Master's in Bengali from the Calcutta University. He started his career as a school teacher. Right now, Shirshendu is on the staff of the Ananda Bazar Patrika at Calcutta. His writing career began with the publication of a short story in the famous Bengali magazine Desh, in 1959. In that same year, his first novel Ghunpoka (translated as Woodworm by Shampa Banerjee) was published in the annual, Puja edition of Desh. First children's novel - Manojder Adbhut BaaRi. He has received many awards for his work: the Vidyasagar Award (1985) for his contributions to the children's literature; Ananda Puraskar (in 1973, and again in 1990), and the Sahitya Akademi award for his novel Manabjamin in 1988. He is one of the popular writers of present-day Bengal.

Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay was born in 30 March 1899 at Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, India. He was born to Tarabhushan and Bijaliprabha Bandyopadhyay. He passed the matriculation examination in 1915 and took admission in Vidyasagar college. After passing the B.A. examination, he studied law in Patna and then devoted his time to writing. While studying in Vidyasagar College, Calcutta, he published his first work, Jaubansmriti, a collection of poems, at the age of 20. He moved to Bombay in 1938 to write screenplays for Bombay Talkies and other film banners. He gave up ties with the film industry in 1952, and moved to Pune, to concentrate on writing. He wrote different forms of prose: novels, short stories, plays and screenplays. However, his forte was short stories and novels. One of his immortal creations is the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi. kaaler mandiraa, gouRo mollar , tumi sandhyara megh, tungabhadraar teere (all novels), chua-chandan, maru o sangha are his well known historical fictions.Some of his novel are portrait into film by Satyajit Ray,Tapan Sinha etc. Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay was awarded the Rabindra Puraskar in 1967 and Sarat Smriti Purashkar in 1967. He died in 22 September 1970.

Works:
'Dour' (Run) was the first novel written by this master novelist and published in 1976. However, he started writing short stories initially, the first of which was published in 'Desh' a Bengali periodical. Author Samaresh Majumdar is equally adept in writing novels and short stories. Kalpurush - The last of Animesh trilogy, this novel explores the conflict of Arko, the son of Animesh and Madhabilata, who tries to adjust between his parents idealisms and present day's consumerism.
Arjun Beriye Elo - Arjun is another fictional character created by Samaresh Majumdar. Arjun is science fiction hero and a detective.

Born on 26 February 1908, Lila Majumdar grew up in Shillong and Kolkata and went on to do a Master’s in English from Calcutta University. She has won many awards for her works, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1963 for a comic musical drama called Bok Badh Pala (Death of the Demon Bok). Her autobiography Aar Kono Khaney (Somewhere Else) won the Rabindra Puroshkar in1968, and Haldey Pakhir Palok (The Yellow Bird) received the Bengal state award for children’s literature in 1960. She celebrated her ninety-ninth birthday in 2007 and died the same year on 5 April.

Nirad C. Chaudhuri or Nirod Chondro Choudhuri was born in (23 November 1897 in Kishoreganj, which today is part of Bangladesh but at that time was part of Bengal, a region of British India. He was educated in Ripon College, Scottish Church College and University of Calcutta. He started his career as a clerk in the Accounting Department of the Indian Army. Bangali Jibane Ramani ,Atmaghati Bangali, Atmaghati Rabindranath are his well known Bangla writing. The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian, A Passage to England , The Continent of Circe, The Intellectual in India,To Live or Not to Live etc are his well known English writing. Nirad C. Chaudhuri was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, in 1975 for his biography on Max Müller called Scholar Extraordinary, by the Sahitya Akademi, India’s national academy of letters.[1] In 1992, he was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom with the title of Commander of Order of the British Empire (CBE). His 1965 work The Continent of Circe earned him the Duff Cooper Memorial Award, becoming the first and only Indian to be selected for the prize. Nirad C. Chaudhuri died in 1 August 1999 in oxford, England.

Bimal Kar was born in Taki, North 24-Parganas, on September 19, 1921. Bimal Kar spent his early youth in Asansol and parts of Bihar like Jabalpur, Hazaribagh, Gomoh and Dhanbad. He was involved in myriad professions that later helped him write on varied subjects. His writings reflect a modern mind and have inspired many young writers whom he also supported at the start of their literary careers. Dewal, Purna Apurna, Jadubansa and Balika Badhu are his well known novels. He also wrote for children, He created the retired magician Kinkar Kishore Ray, alias Kikira who solved mysteries with his two assistants. He created another detective character called Victor. Many of his novels were made into films. He received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975 for his novel Asamay. He died on 26 August 2003.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, which was a new religious sect in nineteenth-century Bengal and which attempted a revival of the ultimate monistic basis of Hinduism as laid down in the Upanishads. He was educated at home; and although at seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish his studies there. In his mature years, in addition to his many-sided literary activities, he managed the family estates, a project which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms. He also started an experimental school at Shantiniketan where he tried his Upanishadic ideals of education. From time to time he participated in the Indian nationalist movement, though in his own non-sentimental and visionary way; and Gandhi, the political father of modern India, was his devoted friend. Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915, but within a few years he resigned the honour as a protest against British policies in India.
Tagore had early success as a writer in his native Bengal. With his translations of some of his poems he became rapidly known in the West. In fact his fame attained a luminous height, taking him across continents on lecture tours and tours of friendship. For the world he became the voice of India's spiritual heritage; and for India, especially for Bengal, he became a great living institution.
Although Tagore wrote successfully in all literary genres, he was first of all a poet. Among his fifty and odd volumes of poetry are Manasi (1890) [The Ideal One], Sonar Tari (1894) [The Golden Boat], Gitanjali (1910) [Song Offerings], Gitimalya (1914) [Wreath of Songs], and Balaka (1916) [The Flight of Cranes]. The English renderings of his poetry, which include The Gardener (1913), Fruit-Gathering (1916), and The Fugitive (1921), do not generally correspond to particular volumes in the original Bengali; and in spite of its title, Gitanjali: Song Offerings (1912), the most acclaimed of them, contains poems from other works besides its namesake. Tagore's major plays are Raja (1910) [The King of the Dark Chamber], Dakghar (1912) [The Post Office], Achalayatan (1912) [The Immovable], Muktadhara (1922) [The Waterfall], and Raktakaravi (1926) [Red Oleanders]. He is the author of several volumes of short stories and a number of novels, among them Gora (1910), Ghare-Baire (1916) [The Home and the World], and Yogayog (1929) [Crosscurrents]. Besides these, he wrote musical dramas, dance dramas, essays of all types, travel diaries, and two autobiographies, one in his middle years and the other shortly before his death in 1941. Tagore also left numerous drawings and paintings, and songs for which he wrote the music himself.

"The time was ripe for one to be born, who in one body would have the brilliant intellect of Sankara and the wonderfully expansive, infinite heart of Chaitanya; one who would see in every sect the same spirit working, the same God; one who would see God in every being, one whose heart would weep for the poor, for the weak, for the outcast, for the downtrodden, for every one in this world, inside India or outside India; and at the same time whose grand brilliant intellect would conceive of such noble thoughts as would harmonize all conflicting sects, not only in India but outside of India, and bring a marvelous harmony, the universal religion of head and heart into existence.
