HORECA KUWAIT 2017 EXHIBITION

2017-02-02T23:13:00.002+03:00

It was quite exciting to attend the much talked about HORECA Kuwait 2017 exhibition organized by Leaders Group, held from 16th January to 18th January 2017 at Hall 8 of Mishrif International Fairgrounds.

HORECA Kuwait is the biggest exhibition held annually, bringing together the best of hospitality and food service industries. HORECA exhibition and events are considered synonymous with quality, professionalism and expertise creating opportunities for participating companies to showcase and market their latest products in food, beverage, food processing technologies, kitchen and catering equipment and hotel supplies and equipment in a constantly evolving business environment in Kuwait.

The highlight of the exhibition which I quite enjoyed was the variety of live food competitions, artistic food display competition, ice carving, live cookery show, chocolate carving, wedding cakes, fruit and vegetable carving demonstrating different styles, techniques and culinary trends and creative innovations with astounding skill, proficiency and dexterity by chefs from leading hotels and restaurants. As a visitor you are left absolutely stunned at the magical feat talented and experienced chefs can present.

The Display competitions comprised of wedding cake, chocolate carving, three plated dessert presentation, themed celebration cake, baguette, cold platter of fish poultry or meat, cold canapes and six course set dinner menu. The Live competitions presented fruit and vegetable carving, sushi, cold sandwich making, mystery basket, hot and cold Lebanese appetizers - mezze, meat dish, Asian cuisine, pasta, ice carving and best burger. The competitions were judged by international judges with awards being presented in various categories creating a celebratory ambiance with much cheer, each time a winner was announced.

Exhibitors in different pavilions offered visitors samples of food, beverage, confectionary and fruit to taste which of course are available for purchase from leading supermarkets, stores and restaurants.

If you are in the hospitality or food industry, hotel, restaurant business, or a chef or barista, baker, supplier or food writer, or a connoisseur of food, HORECA is an exhibition you should not miss out. The next exhibition would be in January 2018.

Here are some photos from the event.

VISIT TO BEAUTIFUL SADEER FARMS

2016-12-15T15:05:00.004+03:00

We registered with Essence Travels for the farm trip last Saturday on 10th December at Sadeer Farms in Abdally. I was so excited that I woke up quite early. It took us 1 hour, 15 minutes from Salmiyah to reach the farm and we arrived by 11.15 am. We were greeted by nature loving, friendly volunteers who confirmed our registration and explained about the farm and the various activities we could chose. As we sat waiting for some information, plenty of visitors turned up. We signed up for the Exotic Farm Tour with animal tour and Vegetable Picking. The farm offers buggy tour for anyone who is interested to go around. Besides the farm tour, young children can have fun with creative art activities. The farm is equipped with clean toilets and hand washing facilities for visitors.

At the entrance, corn, cauliflower, broccoli and honey from the farm were being sold. A large sprawling field with vegetables is in the beginning left corner as you enter. There is a smaller field of vegetables near the community dining area. We passed by an attractive placid pond on our way to the large exotic vegetable field which is the middle of the farm much further down from the entrance. We chose the walking tour so we could take our time and see the entire farm. The first thing I noticed is how well cared for and maintained the farm is and how healthy the vegetables are. It was so delightfully captivating to see rows and rows of amazing vegetables. The opportunity to spend a day out in a farm in Kuwait and see locally grown delicious produce is an exquisite experience. It was my first time seeing white satin carrots and purple carrots. I was fascinated by the different variety of beets as well, especially the yellow beets. The purple cauliflower, purple broccoli and rainbow corn, blue corn were still in growing stage.

The exotic farm had quite a variety of vegetables like beets and carrots in an assortment of colors and different kinds of kale, cabbage, purple lettuce, red spinach, pumpkin, aubergine, and much more. The green house had 12 variety of tomatoes, a lot of it ready for harvesting. The capsicums we noticed were still in growing stage. Oh and yes, the green house also had a wide range of lovely herbs. Pure honey from bee farming is available for purchase. As we walked further down, there was a sheep farm and a bit away from that was the goat farm from where we could hear the baby goats bleat in their sweet tiny voices. It's been a while since I've seen so many baby goats. We walked through the tall, vast corn fields enjoying the prettiness of corn hidden and protected in their husk leaves with silky strands drooping from the top.

Then came the best part - vegetable picking; the jubilation of harvesting by hand. We picked a box and my husband delicately picked several varieties of exotic vegetables from the soil. The food counter had a choice of Saj or burgers. And we of course went for Saj. Tea, coffee, water, cake and pastries were available as well. A huge outdoor dining area with plenty of seating is available for you to comfortably enjoy your food. Alas we couldn't stay back for the bonfire and music which we had actually forward to but we needed to leave before 4 pm to attend another event happening in Shuwaikh. Hopefully we return to Sadeer Farms next season for another farm tour, bonfire and music.

Farm visits is a pleasurable activity for the whole family providing endless joy and instills in us a greater appreciation for agriculture and farming. And you get to take home your choice of hand picked vegetables straight from the soil which means they are absolutely fresh, healthy and tasty. Depending on the tour itinerary for the season, there would be special farming workshops for adults and activities for children..

If you haven't visited Sadeer Farms, you can check out Essence Travels website and instagram for the next farm visit announcement or send them a message via whats app. Farm tours at Sadeer Farms are organized by Essence Travels .

A FABULOUS EVENT BY FAME CO - PASTRY LIVE AND BEYOND IV

2016-12-02T20:37:00.000+03:00

Last Saturday on on 26th November, we attended FAME Co's live pastry demo, 'Pastry Live & Beyond IV, at the Dasman Ballroom in Radisson SAS hotel. The annual 'Haute Couture' demonstration event was organized by Sophie Parou, CEO of FAME - France and Middle East Company.

The art of making pastry, chocolate and baking is amazing, delectable, fulfilling and joyful affair. However there is quite a bit of science, intricate techniques and virtuosity behind the divine taste and impressive suave appearance of these pastries. The live demo was presented by three famous France accredited chefs. French Chef Benoit Visbecq specializing in restaurant desserts, petits flours, banqueting and entrements ; French Chef Omar Addihaoui, known for his artistic prowess in wedding and designer cakes; UK and France accredited Kuwaiti Chef Sadeeqa from the famed Dar Hamad Restaurant showcased French pastries and desserts with a middle eastern twist imbibing Kuwaiti flavors infusing subtle spices.

As a pastry enthusiast, I enjoyed the demo as I watched the chefs passionately work with their adept hands creating these elegant and alluring pastries, desserts and chocolates as they explained the process of making them.

The Dasman Hall was packed with an enthusiastic audience. The event was followed by a cocktail evening for the attendees. All the beautiful work by the three chefs were displayed outside the Dasman hall for viewing.

The objective of the event was to introduce FAME Co products which feature food materials, varied items, ingredients, decorations, everything that is used for making pastry, baking and chocolates and much more. They provide home deliveries for orders placed. FAME Co. conducts pastry classes as well. You can click below to check out their website, facebook and instagram for their products and details

PHOTOS OF FALL FESTIVAL AT YARMOUK CULTURAL CENTER

2016-12-01T20:54:00.000+03:00

Last Friday on 25th November, DAI held a unique 'Fall Festival', an interesting concept that featured everything felicitously artistic in two lovely open roof courtyards of Yarmouk Cultural Center. I enjoyed every moment being there. In one of the two courtyards were local artists with their creative work in the form of paintings, mixed media, sculpted wares, decopatch, fine art, ink painting, glass painting, hand made artsy products and crafts. Live painting on canvases by artists was a sublime highlight. A motor cycle got a live hip makeover in luscious colors by affable hands of artists. In the second courtyard was the food stalls and live music and dance events. We reached in the evening and so we missed some of the performances. We got to see an Armenian dance, live music by talented vocalists, and hip hop by dancers from LAPA Loyac.

It was wonderful evening out. I hope we get to see more art inspired events like these. Let me share some photos of this lovely event.

GIFTS BAZAAR AT MARINA CRESCENT

2016-11-30T00:40:00.002+03:00

The eclectic Gifts Bazaar held last Friday on 25th November at Salwa Al Sabah Hall at Marina Crescent was one of the best bazaars I attended in the recent years. There was no entrance fee. The Hall had so many vendors including home based businesses with an amazing selection of gifts, assortment of confectionery, home made delectables and an enchanting array of decorative articles for the holiday season. I found the hand made items like crochet and knitted works, paintings and mixed media art work absolutely fabulous. A lot of children were having a great time as they busied themselves decorating cookies and cup cakes, a fun activity offered at several stalls. The weather was perfect for those who wanted to grab some lunch or coffee and sit outside and enjoy their time. The venue was packed with visitors when I was there around 11 am. Suddenly I hear an announcement that Santa had arrived and lo there he was sporting sunglasses, seated on a special chair beside a lovely Christmas tree surrounded by a swarm of happy parents taking photos and children awaiting their gifts.

If you missed this bazaar, and would like to attend one, there is a Holiday Bazaar coming up on Friday 2nd December at the same venue, by different organizers. I expect somewhat similar wares at the bazaar. Timings would be 10.30am to 8pm. Entrance fee of 1 KD.

JABER AL AHMAD CULTURAL CENTER AT NIGHT

2016-11-23T23:41:00.001+03:00

Last weekend, some work was going on at the outer premises at JACC and so visitors weren't being allowed in. JACC looks so stunning, be it in sunlight or when it's dark. I took a few photos from across.

RECENT BLS WINTER BAZAAR AT BSK

2016-11-23T23:13:00.001+03:00

Did you drop by the Winter Bazaar organized by British Ladies Society at the British School of Kuwait in Salwa last Friday? Each year I find it a little different. Under a buzzy atmosphere, multifarious vendors showcased gifts, plants, jewelry, paintings, books, crocheted and woven items, crafts, decorative articles and Christmas cakes and goodies. I bought some yarn to try my hand at weaving and some books. The music band and carols by students was delightful. I probably missed Santa by the time we reached BSK around 2.30 pm.

Now for the photos...

MY PHOTO FOR THE DAY - DAR HAMAD RESTAURANT

2016-11-16T00:50:00.001+03:00

I am back to posting an interesting photograph for the day from my collection of incessant captures. This photograph is of Dar Hamad I took a few months back when I went out for lunch with a friend. They serve delicious contemporary Kuwaiti cuisine. I'll be doing another post on our dining experience.

The interesting architecture of this villa styled restaurant is designed to resemble 'Sandook Mubaiyat', meaning dowry box, which is gifted to the bride during her wedding. Dar Hamad is located close to gulf road, very close to Marina Mall bridge.

NOVEMBER 15 IS I LOVE TO WRITE DAY!

2016-11-15T23:32:00.000+03:00

SOME MORE SUPERMOON PHOTOS

2016-11-15T23:30:00.000+03:00

Everyone by now would have seen the Supermoon yesterday. I posted some pictures last night in my blog from what I captured.

This evening, we decided to go up the terrace and see the supermoon again while its still super duper 30 percent bigger and 14 percent more luminuous as yesterday, before it begins to wane in the next few days. So here they are. Enjoy!

SUPER MOON OF MONDAY 14 NOVEMBER

2016-11-14T21:22:00.007+03:00

Did you see the spectacular Supermoon today which is 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter. The last time earth experienced such a supermoon was in 1948. And the next occurrence will be in November 2034! So we didn't want to miss it.

In the early evening just after sunset, we headed out first to the Boulevard and then to Salmiyah park near Sable and Mr. Baker, to witness the supermoon. It appeared so huge and so close in relation to the houses and trees, before it rose higher in the sky and appeared much smaller, but more luminuous. So the right time to experience was early evening around 4.45pm to 6 pm where it feels the moon is literally 'hanging low' from the sky. We had a great time admiring the huge over sized moon. Reminded me of the scene from 'Bruce Almighty' where Jim Carrey pulled the moon way close to earth to impress his sweetheart. Well this wasn't that ridiculously close like in the movie but appeared impressively very close, which was beautiful, flooding you with many coveted picture postcard moments.

If you missed today's super size effect of the super moon you could experience nearly the same thing if you are outside before 5pm tomorrow with your cameras and mobiles and treat yourself to a visual feast.

I took these photos with my hand held Nikon camera. A camera stand would do more justice. However, enjoy!

WEAVING STORIES BY SADU HOUSE, LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS

2016-11-14T15:59:00.001+03:00

Yesterday being the last day, we attended the much talked about 'Weaving Stories' , a week long exhibition by Sadu House. The highlight of the exhibition was the fascinating contemporary panoramic installation of artistic contributions from local and international artists woven onto a large loom, to honor the textile arts of Kuwait. The installation comprised of 72 pieces of varying techniques such as crochet, quilting, embroidery, macrame, fabric painting, knitting, traditional sadu weaving and so on to tastefully convey stories of Kuwait, it's landscape, culture, heritage, cityscape, the desert, flora and fauna, seascape, sea life, dhow, renowned landmarks and structures. Workshops were held throughout the week for adults and students registered for learning the art of weaving.

Two big looms saw the visitors having an interesting interactive session on simple weaving. A basket of colorful yarns and wool were placed for anyone to try their hand on how to weave. With a little guidance from volunteers, almost every visitor made his own little weaving story on the loom. In the photos, you can see my tiny woven piece in grey, blue and red towards the end. My first experience in simple weaving!. This has made me so eager to do a tapestry on a small loom for starters.

THE GARDENS PERFORM - AN AMAZING NIGHT OF PROSE, POETRY AND MUSIC AT 360 MALL

2016-11-14T14:42:00.002+03:00

I got to see a gathering of some of the gifted poets and writers who recited their beautiful work at 'The Gardens Perform', an amazing night of Prose, Poetry and Music at the Vertical Gardens, 360 Mall on Saturday 12 November. Poem recitals were in English and Arabic which were purely the work of each artist himself/ herself. This event was organized by 360 Mall, as part of the annual Nuqat Conference.

A variety of poems ranging from saving the environment, musings on Arab women's empowerment, a teacher's reflections on the institute of education, love poem about food, the beauty and joy of color blue as opposed to it being attributed as a color of sadness, a chef's secret behind his delicious Ratatouille owing to his mom's home made recipe, and many other inspiring, thought provoking and soul stirring poems were rendered. You will see them enlisted in the event program photo. It ended with a musical band singing a few timeless songs concluding with Lionel Richie's song 'Hello'. What a lovely finale!

FANAN FLOWERS EXPO AT 360 MALL

2016-11-09T23:20:00.001+03:00

Yesterday was the last day of the Fanan Flower Expo at 360 Mall. I've always enjoyed visiting flower shows and expos, so ofcourse I didn't want to miss it. Fanan Flower Expo had exhibits by florists, landscape designers, wedding decor vendors and chocolatiers. Though the expo was a small one, it was certainly interesting. The exquisite floral arrangement with fresh flowers of pastel and luminous colors were displayed using both eco friendly and non conventional accessories, elegant furniture with floral decor for weddings or special occasions, indoor and outdoor plants and few garden furniture in wood, definitely offered the visitors an experience of beauty and creativity. An artistically decorated traditional Kuwaiti wedding theme stall in green was stunning. The young lady at the stall told me that green was the color for happiness. Some of the stalls had the sweetest of delectable treats, chocolates and middle eastern confectionery with interesting and traditional fillings. Who doesn't like being gifted beautiful flowers and delicious chocolates.Right?

Here are some photos I took of yesterday's exhibition.

AFRICAN ART EXHIBITION - PAINTING AND HANDCRAFTS

2016-11-09T21:38:00.000+03:00

A beautiful African Art Exhibition of modern, contemporary, landscape, country life and portrait paintings and handcrafts was held at Museum of Modern Art two weeks back. I loved the paintings, it's composition as well as the handcrafted storage baskets, intricately beaded frames for photos and mirrors and wild life inspired ceramic tea sets. Although it's a late post, I wanted to share this commendable work by the artists and artisans.

FIREWORKS CELEBRATION AT JACC - JABER AL AHMAD CULTURAL CENTER

2016-11-06T22:53:00.002+03:00

Were you able to attend the fireworks, light and music show at the newly inaugurated Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Center last Saturday on 5th November? It was spectacular!. A sea of crowd was spread at the beach front and walkways along the Gulf Road across JACC to witness the celebratory visual treat. We parked a little away from Sheraton Hotel, near a bridge and walked towards the venue. The road opposite JACC on the Gulf Road was closed for the event.

The show started off promptly at 7.30 pm with breathtaking music, light show super imposed on the magnificent looking theatrical buildings of JACC, followed by intermittent variety of firework display. We enjoyed every moment. I had to force myself to stop clicking away endlessly so I could enjoy the show rather than only through the lens of my camera. Of course I did take lots of pictures since the show was for 45 minutes.

I am quite excited to share the photos with you. Enjoy!

INDONESIAN DANCE AND MUSIC SHOW

2016-11-04T23:17:00.000+03:00

A beautiful Indonesian traditional Dance and Music show was held at Abdul Hussein Abdul Reda theater in Salmiyah, last Friday. The fascinating dance and music showcased Indonesia's myriad cultural diversity. The last part of the show had an interactive surprise for the audience. We were each given a musical instrument made of bamboo called Anklung and we were guided how to play it. Once we got a grip on playing it, the musician got the entire audience to play few famous songs. It was fun and I could hear an enthusiastic audience absolutely enjoy the musical experience.

One of the top south east destination for tourists, Indonesia is home to over 17,500 islands and 700 ethnic groups. If you are a travel aficionado, do you have Indonesia on your bucket list?

SCULPTING WITH CLAY - A GREAT WORKSHOP BY KUWAIT ACADEMY OF ART

2016-11-04T23:15:00.022+03:00

I enjoy working with sculpting clay and I've made small figurines on my own. It was my first time sculpting a life size portrait at the three hour workshop held by Kuwait Academy of Art, last Saturday. The participants had two choices - relief sculpture or portrait. My husband wanted to do relief sculpture. He made a lovely rabbit and a bird. I was so eager to do a portrait. A bucket of sculpting clay was given to each of us portrait enthusiasts, and we got to work. We were asked to observe the size and shape of the face, head, forehead, nose, eyes, ears, lips and chin and shown on a diagram and how they should be positioned while sculpting. We were shown the intricacies on how to sculpt with our hands as well few sculpting tools, giving importance to the basic anatomy proportions. The whole three hours was an absolutely enriching experience. The joy of being able to create something beautiful from clay is engrossingly vibrant.

The sculpture workshop was conducted by Fajer Behbehani, who graduated with Masters in Fine Arts from University of the Arts London.

If you are interested in sculpture, drawing and painting courses or workshops, you can contact Fajer at Kuwait Academy of Art. Visit their Instagram for updates. The links are given below. There are some great pictures on their instagram page of her work.

MUROUJ MARKET

2016-11-04T23:14:00.000+03:00

Murouj Restaurants Complex in Sabhan held a weekend Market last Friday and Saturday. We chose to go late afternoon on Friday. It was one of the first markets to be held this year since the weather has turned so beautiful. The Morouj Market had a number of food stalls by well known restaurants, extending from one end to the other by the lake, bordered by urban landscape and fountains. The venue was so pleasant. As the sun set and lights came on, it was definitely a visual treat. A special play area was arranged for children. A place for games had a queue of young people trying their luck at archery. With plenty of seating arrangement, we could just relax, have something to eat, and enjoy the view, the ambiance and the music being played by the DJ.

BOULEVARD KUWAIT

2016-10-25T18:04:00.001+03:00

Have you been to the newly opened Boulevard in Salmiyah? It took quite a number of years to complete the project, didn't it? It's a beautiful oasis of lush greenery with lakes, man made rivulets, in sprawling 353,000 square meters with all kinds of facilities for recreation, sport, fitness, leisure, dining, shopping, entertainment, and children's play area. There's a Multipurpose Hall for functions, conventions and seminars. The Amphitheater is crowned on the side by a charming placid lake. Only some of the retail shops in the Boulevard Mall have opened for now, and the rest will be opening shortly. The food court on the first floor offers a spectacular view of the beautiful fountain in the lake across. You will see restaurants by the lake as well with both indoor and outdoor dining.

To walk around the pathways or sit amid diverse plants, trees, flowers and luscious green grass all around is bound to offer the alluring serenity you find only the magic of nature can offer, besides the benefits of walking. This is the sort of place not only grown ups would enjoy but children would experience an exciting sense of freedom to run and play and even explore the vast expanse of the green belt. I don't think picnics with food are allowed. Understandably to avoid the trash and litter some people are bound to leave behind . No worries about food or beverages because there is a nice food court in the mall as I mentioned earlier. There's ample car parking all around as well in the basement. A train service within the Boulevard which is actually a shuttle service hopefully would be functional soon. There are rest rooms near the courts and in the mall.

Volley ball, basket ball, tennis courts, cricket stadium are all near each other in a corner away from the main entrance and the Mall with separate car parking facility.

The weather is just beautiful. So head out there much before sunset, walk around the mall, experience the food court, go out in the open and explore the green surroundings, the walking bridge, color changing tunnel, climb the green hill and bask in the view, sit by one of the lakes, enjoy the sunset, the blue hour and watch the fountain and park light up at night.

Ready to look at some photos? Welcome to Boulevard Kuwait!
