&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;What is Yogic self-analysis?&lt;/b&gt; Whether we teach Yoga, or come to classes  as a student, all of us learn more about ourselves in the process. All  forms of Yoga enable a practitioner to engage in introspection.  Self-observation is a part of Yoga practice - at the physical, mental,  emotional, and spiritual levels. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If a student has not learned to contemplate his or her desires,  behavior, and thoughts, there may have been no guidance in this area of  Yogic studies. To learn about one's self, requires time to reflect and  examine, without judging. It is easy to point out all of our past  mistakes, but this is not the purpose of this mental exercise. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Self-analysis, or self-reflection, &lt;/b&gt;is a soul-searching quest for  penetrating below the surface layer of our personality, and making a  habit of improving situations that occur in the present. Some people  find Yogic self-analysis to be a daunting task. They may require  counseling from a qualified counselor, instead of trying to learn how to  develop self-awareness. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There is nothing wrong with seeking professional guidance, for  developing the skill of self-analysis. The point being: Each of us  should strive to independently manage his or her life. This is not  possible for all of us; but with proper guidance, many of us can learn  to look directly at a problem and develop a plan for a logical solution. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Self-reflection is sometimes referred to as a form of meditation. To  focus one's thought process on introspection is, in fact, a form of  meditation. The reasons why Yoga and meditation teachers shy away from  guiding students toward self-analysis are because students may focus on  negative experiences, or the teacher does not know much about this  particular technique. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To come face-to-face with our weaknesses, or strengths, can be an  intense experience. Our point of view may not be objective. In the case  of phobias, our self-created fear causes anxiety, and a cycle of  confusion follows flare-ups. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Many people ask: "How can self-analysis help me with my phobias?"&lt;/b&gt;  Knowing our own strengths and weaknesses gives us an honest measurement,  based upon reality; but we must practice non-judgment while we search  for a way to solve, or improve, the situation. To some degree, phobias  are caused by irrationally intense fear. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Yoga's approach to self-analysis allows a student the ability to  cope with internal fears, while a logical solution is sought.  Ultimately, anyone who learns to fully overcome a phobia has learned a  valuable lesson on the quest toward self-mastery. To find the master  within is one of the greatest benefits of Yoga practice.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
There are a number of Hatha &lt;span class="il"&gt;Yoga&lt;/span&gt; styles that we  can label as "therapeutic." Among these styles are: Iyengar, Viniyoga,  Restorative, Sivananda, and others. Each of these &lt;span class="il"&gt;Yoga&lt;/span&gt; styles addresses skeletal and spinal health in a variety of ways. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When you consider the number of people who are coping with back pain, every &lt;span class="il"&gt;Yoga&lt;/span&gt;  teacher training should include a segment on back care, pain  management, maintenance, and prevention.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Let's look at a couple of  methods, anyone can incorporate into their day, in order to prevent back  pain. &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;1. Strengthen the core muscles.&lt;/b&gt; This is an area of the body we would  like to ignore, but when we do, it continues to blossom in size. A big  stomach is not useful for supporting the lower spine.  Asana, alone,  will not make a big belly shrink. We all know that eating moderately  will help us control the size of our waistline. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That said - any asana or pranayama technique should be performed  with balance in mind. If one performs hundreds of crunches, one must  devote an equal amount of time to performing back-bending asanas.  Crunches, alone, will tighten the abdominal muscles, but will stretch  the back forward and out of balance. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is why Bidalasana (Cat pose) and Bitilasana (Cow pose) are so  beneficial for balancing the abdominal muscles with the back muscles.  There are other methods, but these two simple postures, practiced as Cat  and Cow, help us contract and stretch core muscles with ease. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;2. Sleep with good posture.&lt;/b&gt; Many &lt;span class="il"&gt;Yoga&lt;/span&gt;  teachers know this, but few students are made aware of this concept.  Most people find that the morning is filled with stiffness. Many chalk  it up to simply "sleeping wrong." The mattress, pillows, and foam  mattress pads, we choose, should be of good quality. Much like the  quality we expect from good &lt;span class="il"&gt;Yoga&lt;/span&gt; props, these "bedtime props" are very important for back pain prevention. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When we sleep, we are, in fact, practicing &lt;span class="il"&gt;Yoga&lt;/span&gt;  asanas for many hours. Your spine will thank you for sleeping on your  sides. Sleeping on the stomach is not recommended, and you should avoid  sleeping on your back for long periods of time. Pillows, of different  sizes, will gently lock you into a side-relaxation asana. If you wake up  during the night, re-adjust your pillows and shift to the opposite  side. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You should flip, or rotate, your mattress position every month. When  a mattress is concave, you need to replace it. You can ignore it, but  your back will let you know. Pillows and foam mattress pads should be  replaced every 1 - 2 years. This will enable you to have better neck and  spinal alignment. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There is also another reason for getting rid of old pillows and foam  mattresses - this will help reduce allergies, dust, dust mites, dust  mite remains, pet dander, hair, and body oils, that have worked their  way into a pillow's fabric. Some studies indicate that the weight of a  pillow can double in three years.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
When you suffer from chronic back or joint pain, it is hard to find any  type of exercise that does not put you through stress.  Even  cardiovascular workouts can aggravate these physical issues. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Things like running and weight training can only increase the pain  you feel in your joints and back or spine.  However, there are options  for you to stay in fit and get exercise without damaging your body or  causing anguish. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you are unsure about how to get cardio without running, you could  try other options.  Running is a great choice for anyone worried about  pain. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The weightlessness that you feel in the water will help your body to  avoid strain or pressure.  You could also try making use of biking, if  you happen to have troublesome areas in your legs. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Back pain can be caused by a number of different things.  If you  have pulled or strained the muscles in this region, it is important to  follow a treatment plan; usually the best way to heal is to mix resting  and relaxation with strengthening. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If this is a problem area for you, you may be noticing issues with  your sacrum.  This is a triangular grouping of bone at the base of the  spine that sits between the hip bones. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Inflammation or discomfort in this region can be cause by too much  sitting, overarching the lower back, working it too much, or simply from  stress.  In order to reduce the inflammation, you must find ways to  relax the sacrum and stabilize it. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Joints are another thing that can get in the way of your ability to  run, lift weights, or take part in aerobic activity.  When these are  worn down, your limbs do not move as quickly and easily as they may have  before. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Find workouts that do not put stress or strain on your body.  You  can also make use of supplements, like glucosamine chondroitin, that  repair these areas and make them more mobile. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of the best workout options for an individual that experiences  pressure or discomfort in the lower back is yoga.  This is a very calm  and static type of exercise. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The main focus is on relaxation and stretching your limbs and  muscles.  Yoga is performed by holding specific poses and breathing  regularly. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The stretches make muscles more elastic and make the body looser.   This method of exercise has been around for thousands of years, and  began in India as a way to relax and free the mind spiritually. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It has since been adapted into a soothing and rejuvenating fitness  regime.  A typical yoga class or workout consists of a series of  stretches and poses being held to optimize flexibility of the limbs,  joints, and muscles and to calm the body. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

For these  people, getting the full benefits of the not only involves the exercises  and stress-relieving meditations of yoga, but also developing a  nutrition plan that follows some of the same principles.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; Combining yoga and nutrition is not a new development. Yoga instructors  have been touting the benefits of proper nutrition for years. But it has  become part of a new awareness recently thank to scientific studies  that back up the claims regarding diet that yogis have been espousing  for centuries, namely that nutrition is a big part of the quest for  balance between the mind, body and spirit.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; As stated, yoga and its focus on nutrition is nothing new. There is, in  fact, an entire discipline of yoga called Anna Yoga that concerns food  and its influence on health and fitness. Yet while some of the specific  details about what constitutes healthy eating may vary among the  different branches of yoga, many of the most important aspects are the  same: modest, reasonable portions of foods that are high in nutrients  and low in toxins is the way to go. These include lots of fruits,  vegetables and whole grains. This is a diet that yoga practitioners have  been subsisting on for centuries but the doctors of today have just  recently began to suggest.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; Among yoga practioners, food is divided into three categories: Rajasil,  Tamsik and Satvik. Rajaski, which translates to "food of the king" is  heavily processed or has a lot of seasonings. Candy, processed foods and  beverages and alcohol are classified as Rajasik foods. Tamsik foods are  elaborately prepared foods that are high in sodium and usually highly  spiced. Lastly, Satvik foods are consumed in as close to their original  state as possible - fresh vegetables and fresh fruit that, if they are  cooked, are done so with only a light coating of seasoning to keep most  or all of their nutritional value. Satvik food is considered the basis  of an ideal diet by yoga practitioners. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; Because of the way they are prepared, Satvik foods have exceptional  nutritional value and are easily digested. Combined with the body  benefits of yoga, a diet that adheres to the Satvik foods can help one  develop and promotes a well-conditioned and healthy body. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; Even if you are not a regular student of yoga, adhering to a Satvik diet can have great benefits. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; Among the primary beliefs of a nutritious diet, according to yoga  instructors, is that food be consumed in as fresh a state as possible.  Fresh fruits and vegetables and the enzymes they contain are favorable  over frozen or canned foods, where the canning process has taken out  many of the vitamins and minerals of the food. Also, some yoga  practitioners recommend eating many of the fruits and vegetables you  consume raw to let your body get the fully effect of the nutritional  value. Meanwhile, green vegetables are particularly special to yoga  experts, who consider cabbage, lettuce, broccoli and spinach to have the  high amount of nutrients and "life force". Yogis also consider fruit to  be full of the "life force" and highly nutritious. The natural sugars  in fruit, they say, can provide a fast and nutrition sources of energy  minus the harmful toxins.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; While many involved in yoga (and even others who are not) do not consume  meat, fish or poultry, there are many who participate in yoga who do  eat these foods. However, yoga instructors recommend moderation in  taking in meat as it may contain toxins such as lactic acid, fat,  cholesterol and other chemicals that can slow the growth of muscles  gained from the practice of yoga.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; Finally, even the manner in which food is consumed is important to those  who have yoga as a major part of their life. Instructors and  practitioners suggest eating meals slowly to permit your body to extract  all of the contained nutrients. The issues of longevity and quality of life as related to Yoga, seem to be important reasons why people start Yoga practices in the first instance. In day to day life, the desire to live a longer life is the reason behind many of our activities as we pay attention to health and good life in many forms, all having more or less a hidden agenda that of living longer. However, longevity and quality of life are much related to one another as two aspects of the same desire, the quality of life (as intensity of life experience) being a qualitative progression of longevity.&lt;br /&gt;

In normal circumstances, people pay more attention to longevity, not being much aware on the issue of quality. It is not so in Yoga, for here the main issue is the quality of life experience that attracts also the longevity as a component of quality of life. Yoga sees longevity as a component, or more exactly a result of Yoga practices. The fact that the yogic discipline allows the body to function better and the mind to be under one's own control (that is a balanced way of life without any doubt), has to lead to a longer span of life of a practitioner. But, Yoga is primarily about the quality of life, an issue that is outlined by the Yoga philosophy in its very authoritative book known as Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Quality of life&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
From the yogic perspective, the issue of quality of life has to be seen from both material and spiritual angles. Yet, the material angle of quality of life can be simplified by considering it as an expression of the spiritual perspective. Indeed, the spiritual side of quality of life takes credit for the material side that becomes just a matter of a right attitude towards material things. In own turn, the spiritual side of quality of life has to be seen from body and mind perspectives. The body issue is essential, as the harmonization of the body is a solid foundation for addressing the issues of the mind that becomes a the tool of extension, the organ and function through which we experience the world.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In practical terms Yoga recommends the body has to be cleansed of impurities, i.e. toxins, etc., for this reason a multitude of Yoga techniques being used. The motivation behind it is the fact that the toxins within the body do corrupt the perception to certain degrees. It is primarily the quality of perception that gives in fact the quality of life, is so Yoga pays a great attention towards the body as a vehicle of sense experience and host of mind experiences. Yet, here, the issue of the mind is far more complex because it requires a certain degree of abstraction to understand the mind experiences. However, we cannot miss the point to mention that body experiences, as sense experience, do end up ultimately as mental experience. From the point of view of Yoga, what is essential is that the experience of awareness known as Samadhi, is the focus and end point of the entire practice. It can be said in simple terms that in Yoga philosophy and practice, the quality of life is determined by the level of awareness that leads to yogic liberation known as Kaivalya.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Awareness&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The end achievement of Yoga practice is in some form or another described by people who have experienced it, as the experience of awareness or the experience of being alert. A person possessing such an awareness is known in Yoga as Drashta ("witness"), as is mentioned in Yoga Sutras. Here. the question we might ask is: "Who is a witness and what the witness witnesses?" The relevant yogic literature does mention that awareness is a gradual process, as Yoga practices become more refined and the practitioner becomes more alert towards the environment and towards one's own person.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There is a wide spread idea in the Yoga literature about awareness being a transcendent experience in the sense that somehow the one who does experience it gets out of this material world, but this is not true. Yoga awareness has to be seen as an immanent experience for the fact that conscious states are mental states therefore brain states. It will be more appropriate to see consciousness, as qualia of mental activities, that step ahead from animal to human species. As such, Yoga does assume that the present Homo Sapiens has the capacity to graduate into the Yoga consciousness as qualia, but this ability is not a common feature of all of us. It appears, as the yogic literature points out that only after practicing advanced forms of Yoga, somebody is capable to acquire such an awareness as a day to day feature of human activities.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, talk about Drashta ("seer or witness") from the beginning (Ch.I-3). The issue seems to be of an utmost importance, as the practitioner (as Drashta) has to be now on the same site with the the one who is the witness of all, i.e. the God (more often named in Yoga tradition as Ishvara). According to Yoga, the object a witness witnesses is the material nature, as manifestation of Shakti principle. Yet most important is the fact that the witness does witness himself/ herself, as every witness is part of the material nature. Yet, this process of witnessing is not the ordinary way of seeing actions and things within the world of nature (Prakriti). According to Yoga, this kind of witnessing has a high quality of perception.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Yoga claims that this the enhanced quality of perception does not lead to a simple passive contemplation of things or to a one-pointed directional concentration, but a multilevel degree of perception. Naturally we might ask the question of what is a multilevel degree of perception? Yoga explains in simple words as being the capacity to be aware of more than one thing at a time. Yet, this capacity appears to be beyond the human capacity, but Yoga has proved that some people can do it. Such an experience might be called a three-dimensional awareness, for the fact that attention is directed now in the entire surrounding space. Such a remarkable ability has to be seen to be indeed a high degree of expressing the qualia of human life.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;How to increase awareness&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Yoga practices normally do increase awareness to a certain extent depanding on the kind of practice. The preliminary stages of Yoga that are related to body optimisation, start with a gradual elimination of body toxins and renunciation to various addictions. At this stage, gradually the perception of the senses increase in quality. By other practices like the use of Pranayama ("control of the breath") Yoga says that there is a sensation of awareness of the lightness of the body (called Laghima), i.e. the heavy barden that hanged on the body appears to be removed. Yet, as far as the tantric practices are concerned, awareness can be obtained by elimination of sexual ejaculation during sexual intercourse. Therefore, according to Tantra Yoga, the real sexual pleasure can be experienced, in so such a practice known as Maithuna Tantra becomes a training towards obtaining awareness. Overall, it can be said that it is only by a personal experience that somebody can discover an inclination towards specific practices leading to the increase of awareness by a proper training. However, the tradition stipulates that a more refined awareness comes from advanced practices, and at this spiritual stage an aspirant has to consider having a Guru (spiritual preceptor) as a guide to help overcoming the obstacles towards a refined experience of Yoga.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Siddhis as powers of awareness and expression of quality&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali talks in Chapter III about various Siddhis ("powers resulting from Yoga' or 'supernormal abilities'). It is an exposition of what a Drashta can do with his/ her abilities. Many people take the descriptions of Siddhis ad literam, but the fact is that all the Siddhis are products of the mind. It is the mind which assumes the form of that particular action or thing by being empowered to do so. This is where most of aspirants get confused to believe that the Siddhis are powers of creation or destruction that can be acquired by somebody and the role of God can be obtained by confronting the laws of nature. It has to be clearly understood that all Siddhis are powers of awareness, the one possessing them has to be seen an out of ordinary person that is able to extend one's own mind beyond unimaginable realms surpassing the ordinary imagination. Yoga believed that one necessary quality for such a person has to be what is known as Amritapurna ("filled with nectar"), that is an advanced state of purity of mind as a result of body and mind purification. A Drashta, according to Yoga has to be considered having the Amritapurna quality.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The ability to experience awareness has to be seen as a remarkable quality of expressing the human life. Such a powerful is the experience that by an encounter with a Drashta most people will feel that there is something special about such a person, but are unable to know what could be. It will be easy to observe the quality of experience of life in such a person, but will be heard to know details like how intense his/ her experiences of perception of life are. It is at this point where we have to draw attention to the issue of longevity. The real longevity is not given by the span of life, but by the quality of mental experiences. The awareness of life, as is normally experienced, is like a photographic shot, i.e. a slice at a time. Every now and then, normally we have a slice of conscious experience, that is a brief experience. It is not so for a Drashta, according to Yoga, for the fact that the slices of time are united in a continuous flow of awareness. Yet, some people having this extraordinary ability that could hold on awareness for hours or even during sleep.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Considering all of the above, it can be certainly said that longevity in Yoga is a matter of quality of experience. By deduction, it can be also said that a Drashta has lived the equivalent of hundreds of years because of the ability to have a higher level of awareness.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
To understand the cause of all mental conflicts and diseases, we must understand that the mind comprises a conscious part and a sub conscious part.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Conflicts and mental turbulence occurs because we cannot reconcile our conscious part with what is going on inside the deeper realms of the mind. Further, the subconscious mind itself is the home of many negative thoughts that are in a constant tussle with each other.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The aim in yoga psychology (as also in the modern psychology that we are aware of) is to reconcile these conflicts and bring them in harmony with the conscious mind.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;How the subconscious is formed&lt;/span&gt;?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
According to &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Swami Satyananda&lt;/span&gt; every action has a momentum. At the end of every momentum a seed is dropped into the subconscious, which is a memory of that action. These 'seeds' are called Samskaras in yoga or archetypes in psychology.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The mind has a way to bury unpleasant memories and negative experiences into its depths. So the subconscious is a cumulative memory of countless experiences and thoughts including negative emotions.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Dream analysis is an important part of psychology wherein suppressed unconscious material is discovered and then released. The practitioner introspects on the subconscious messages that are being perceived by the dreaming mind.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The yoga solution&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The yoga counterpart of this is &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;'antar mouna' (inner silence).&lt;/span&gt; This is a meditation technique in yoga which helps in performing the same function.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are 2 main differences between conventional dream analysis and the yoga technique of 'antar mouna'. In antar mouna, you are your own psychologist. There is no other person doing it for you. The second important difference is that in 'antar mouna' the aim is to remain fully conscious at all times. In dream analysis that is not the case.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In this yoga technique you are taught to bring out your unconscious thoughts by provoking them and then witnessing the thought pattern. According to Swami Satyananda, when a thought comes into your mind, you can break out of the conflict by learning to remain just a mute witness to it. If you become involved in it, then it will go back to be recycled at a later date. Therefore, you are encouraged to be a witness to the thought pattern and then throw out the worthless thought.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In antar mouna you are taught to see your mind as it is now and proceed into the state of thoughtlessness. You are taught to be aware of your dream in the conscious state. Once this is achieved, you can also learn to be aware of your dream in the sleeping state.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This yoga technique when learnt, helps to resolve the deepest of fears and neuroses and brings about a calmness and tranquility in every day life. You can learn to communicate with the psychic level of your awareness which forms the bedrock of all dreams and visions.&lt;br /&gt;

Empowerment, not only in their mental state but also physically - during workouts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I'm teaching my student a new asana, my greatest concern is to help them maintain a state of excitement - to maintain an ambition to learn and master their workout session.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Why?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because muscles work this way. Muscles are 'emotional'. As a teacher, I know I have a very small window of 'winning' a muscle over and achieve success.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The Story of Rob&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's take a student I taught at the LeCharles Football Academy. 'Rob' is an offensive lineman. He's over 6 feet tall. He weighs around 250lbs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rob cannot carry his weight. He is huge. Pretty much all he does on the football field is stand his ground to block a play. He's good but could be much better. In our session my main focus is to keep his mind and muscles in a state of 'I can'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Rob's Asanas&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, I only teach specific asanas to Rob that I know he is capable of handling. When Rob practices the poses I use all my accessories. I use the wall, blocks or floor to allow him to go into the most accurate alignment he is capable of obtaining.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I then tell Rob to hold the asana for 1/2 second. Just enough time for his muscle and mind to communicate. To imprint the image.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My main focus for Rob is to always, always, always maintain a mentality of empowerment It's to approach every asana with a positive emotion - never with fear and anxiety.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I were to put Rob in an asana where he was forced to maintain a pose beyond what his body is capable of doing, the muscle would become 'traumatized'. Once this happens, we've lost the battle. And each time Rob approached that asana his muscles would begin to shut down. We've lost.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Happy Muscles&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I want Rob to maintain a clear mental focus. He needs to be aware of what his muscles and mind are capable of imprinting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once Rob is in alignment he holds the asana for 30 sec or less. That's it. That sends the message of the alignment to the brain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then Rob's muscles become satisfied. After we wait 30 seconds and the blood returns to the muscles, we approach the asana again. We do this two to three times. We repeat it the next day and the next.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By the second day, Rob's muscles have the picture.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Confidence&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I challenge Rob to go into the asana, he approaches it with confidence because it's always been a positive experience. Familiar with the image Rob's muscles and mind can easily apply the pose accurately for 30 seconds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If we were to have Rob, before he is able, hold the pose longer, fear would set in. That would defeat the whole process.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This concept is not only mental but chemical. When muscles are traumatized they release a chemical that is toxic to the muscles. Therefore , every time we approach the pose, the muscle 'remembers' the trauma. And the toxic chemicals wait - ready to be released.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If we continue this cycle (which is the majority of how people work out) we set ourselves up for constant failure, which leads to pain and injuries.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;No Pain&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This concept is applied to my Muscular Dystrophy patient, MS and people with injuries and post surgeries conditions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My goal, no pain. Never allow my client to have pain, if they have pain, we've lost the battle. The muscles become traumatized.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We approach each session gently and with a sense of eagerness. I encourage my clients to have an "I Can" state of mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know muscles. The game's sedentary nature ironically adds to its excitement, creating a little world where nothing exists except you, your opponent and the chessboard.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chess games, especially in the big tournaments, can require you to stay seated for hours at a time, thus causing poor circulation. This can lead to serious cardiovascular health problems over time, such as deep vessel thrombosis. On a more immediate timescale, it can lead to soreness and stiffness of the muscles, and to sluggishness of the brain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Improving your breathing during chess games can also help you psychologically. Controlled, long, deep breathing can soothe your nerves. In other words, you can use better breathing to prevent a panic attack if your opponent surprises you with a brilliant, unexpected move. Needless to say, this has real practical benefits. Chess is a game of the mind. The player who has the calm, clear mind will win.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are lots of ways to pick up these types of improved breathing practices. You might take yoga classes, for example. These are available at many fitness centers, usually in versions that excise the religious and philosophical aspects from the physical practices. Then again, you might be interested in learning the spiritual aspects of yoga breathing, as well. In that case, you might do research on the recent writings of Buddhist and Hindu spiritual leaders. &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;You might consider this another benefit of doing yoga:&lt;/span&gt; it can be a gateway to other mindsets or conscious planes that will show you a whole new way of looking at chess. You might come up with brand-new moves that you never would have thought of from your usual perspective on the game.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, you should not just limit better breathing to your championship games. Use it in your practice games, or even when you are not playing at all. Better breathing is great for your body, no matter what you are doing. Also, once better breathing practices become habitual, you will not have to concentrate on improving breathing while you are playing. You can get the advantages of yoga breathing without being distracted by getting the inhale-exhale techniques right. It would be silly to expect you to lose your concentration over a technique that is supposed to enhance your focus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;This is why practice outside of big games is necessary:&lt;/span&gt; by the time your critical moment comes around, your better breathing practices have become ingrained. Breathing aids (as in special equipment you purchase to build your lung capacity) might help to hasten this process.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chess can be a highly addictive game. It consumes your thoughts and efforts, even if your next match is far away. However, while you are trying to remember old tips and tricks, and design new strategies, do remember to look after your body and mind by practicing optimal breathing. Yoga breathing, especially, is not only good for your game, but offers you indispensable health benefits. But first, for those who still don't want to stop smoking, let us give a few scaring facts. I, of course, don't want to frighten anybody, this is just another attempt to raise more awareness about this subject.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many of us heard this example in college that a drop of nicotine can kill a horse. And many also heard a typical answer that "in that case the horse should not smoke". That is, this argument does not sound very convincing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;What else should we know then about the effect of nicotine?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most know that nicotine causes cancer, especially lung cancer. But nicotine also changes the chemical functions in the brain. That is why it creates addiction like all other drugs. Researches done in the US have shown that teen smokers are more likely to have panic attacks, anxiety disorders, and depression.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nearly half a million Americans die from smoking every year. One of every six deaths in the United States is a result of smoking tobacco, making tobacco more lethal than all other addictive drugs combined.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But, apart from nicotine, there are many more harmful substances in cigarettes. Most of us don't know that, when smoking, we inhale thousands of chemicals with the cigarette smoke:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;In 1936 there were 120 additives used in cigarettes,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;in 1959 their number increased to 450,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;in 1968 there were 950 kinds of additives,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;in 1982, 3875,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;and today their number exceeds 4000!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, what people smoke now is not just tobacco, it is a complex mixture of various chemical components. They are added for various purposes. Some give flavors to the cigarettes, some work as preservatives, but many additives are used in fact to increase one's addiction so that it becomes much more difficult to stop smoking than it used to be, say, 50 years ago. Even those additives that do not cause addiction are mostly harmful in one way or another.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Light cigarettes,&lt;/span&gt; That is another myth pushed forward by tobacco manufacturers. When they first came on the market in 1970, it was believed that light cigarettes are less harmful. However, research results show that smoking light cigarettes is associated with the same risk of illness and death as in the case of normal cigarettes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, smoking has a very diverse negative effect on the human health, and there is no way out like light cigarettes or anything.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;But how to stop smoking? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Most common methods used are: &lt;/span&gt;nicotine replacement treatments, acupuncture, injections, medication. However none of these methods gives statistically proven strong effect. Besides, some of them are rather costly and some produce side effects. After all Yoga is basically a healthy life style for    spiritual upliftment!         &lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The Science of Yoga has both, ideology and    technology:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;Suggestive theory and Practical methods. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;Yoga suggests and    supports vegetarian diet, naturally grown fruits and vegetables, all    grains, pulses and dairy products as a healthy diet with few options.    The options are available to those who have reached the higher level of    understanding and perception.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The yogic diet emphasis vegetarian and    dairy products for mainly two reasons, firstly:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;The principles of Yoga    are based on the laws of the Mother Nature and secondly it purely    believes in the core nature. The more you are close to the nature you    are more healthy, the more you are away from her you are more sick and    ill and most unhealthy!      &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p align="justify"&gt;The first step in Yoga practices is &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;*&lt;/span&gt;&lt;i style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Yama&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;,&lt;/span&gt;    meaning restrains. Which covers the concept of &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;*'&lt;/span&gt;&lt;i style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Ahimsa&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;'&lt;/span&gt; meaning non-violence, non-hurting, non-killing and non-injury. Mother nature has given supremacy to man by giving and providing more intellectual power compare to other creatures on earth. The virtue of Non-violence is to curb that power. Man has no right to kill or hurt any other creatures.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;Yoga practice thus restricts the act of man so he can't misuse his powers on other creatures. In other words there is a straight message to eat live and survive on the products naturally grown or cultivated by man in order to cover the needs of the human population on earth. &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p align="justify"&gt;There is always a debate and discussion that plucking and cutting any fruits, vegetables, plants and trees, is also an act of violence. Yoga gives further explanation that you have only right to cut, which, is grown naturally or cultivated by man himself! The seed itself has no life. You put life into it by providing land, manure, water, your efforts and care. So you have a right to pluck and cut!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;You are the cause and reason of that life. So for survival, cutting any naturally grown and cultivated plants or plucking fruits from a tree is not considered as an act of violence or sin as per the law of nature and Yoga. &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p align="justify"&gt;Yoga science further explains that why vegetarian diet is good. It also gives scientific explanation at both levels: physical and mental. &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p style="font-weight: bold;" align="justify"&gt;Physically: &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;    &lt;p align="justify"&gt;Vegetarian diet is easy to digest because it is natural E.g. The protein from any beans or dairy product is easy to digest than an animal protein. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;    &lt;p align="justify"&gt;Vegetarian diet takes 3-4 hours to digest while non-vegetarian diet takes 6 + hours to digest. The body and specially the organs of the digestive system have to work more and hard to digest heavy foods. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;    &lt;p style="font-weight: bold;" align="justify"&gt;Mentally: &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p align="justify"&gt;Our great Yogis were observers of the nature. They have studied the Nature very minutely and precisely.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Milk is the first food taken by all babies: human or animal! &lt;/span&gt;A very natural form of food for any life! Produced by the body and for the nourishment of the body! So all the natural form of dairy product is covered in Yogic diet. Again animal milk is a question of debate and discussion but we all know that we use the milk from animals those are domestic and survive on grains, grass and plants- the natural foods. &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;E.g.&lt;/span&gt; cows, goats, camels etc. Plus the priority is given to their babies and human - the caretaker or owner, uses remaining extra milk! &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p align="justify"&gt;In the category of domestic animals we have to consider elephant, horse, donkey, bull etc though they are strong, their strength and power is useful, they offer their services to the owners! &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The violent and wild animals:&lt;/span&gt; tiger, panther, lion, they attack and kill others. Now just compare their nature, behavior and food they eat and you will get the answer! &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p align="justify"&gt;In other words it proves that even in animal kingdom, those who are eating natural veggie food are more calm, useful and stronger animals! Their strength is useful. While wild animals are always angry, irritated, agitated and restless. They are strong but the strength is wasted in fulfilling their needs, instincts, power and desires! &lt;/p&gt;   &lt;p align="justify"&gt;The same principle applies to man!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;Here we get the straight message from the nature that which type of person you would like to be- Calm, cool controlled and at ease or angry, agitated and restless?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p align="justify"&gt;As I've mentioned earlier that in Yoga it is said &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;`what you eat is what you are!'&lt;/span&gt; I hope that the explanation given by our great Yogis is enough to understand that why Yoga practically suggests, supports and encourage vegetarian diet! Especially in this time of economic uncertainty where people are losing their jobs left and right, yoga and meditation are things that are becoming more common. Not only is yoga relaxing, but it helps to relieve stress that people feel and accumulate throughout the day. If you have never tried yoga, make sure that you do your research. The reasons that people choose to do yoga vary from person to person, and there are different levels of yoga classes out there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;One reason that people choose to do yoga is because it helps to increase flexibility and joint movement, which is something that is important to the health of an individual- especially those who are aging. Flexibility is important, especially if you are an athlete or someone who exercises often, because being more flexible reduces the chances of you pulling a muscle or becoming injured otherwise. Still, other people join yoga because of the relaxing and meditative benefits it provides. If you have never attended a yoga class before, make sure you speak to a qualified representative who can place you in the right class, as there are varying levels of yoga classes available. Yoga classes are typically not that large. When you walk into a class, typically, there is an instructor who stands at the front of the room but who later moves throughout the room, helping individuals with their poses. Additionally, the lighting is softer and there is soothing music playing. The point of all this is to create an atmosphere in which you can relax.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There usually isn't any talking in a yoga class except the talking that you hear when you are listening to the instructions coming from the yoga instructor. The yoga instructor will guide you through a series of poses which are designed to test not only your flexibility but your range of motion as well as your concentration. Being able to concentrate and focus clearly on a task at hand is something to behold in this day and age. With so many distractions around us, it is sometimes difficult to think clearly. Yoga helps us to unwind and re-channel our energies into positive, healthy ways of thinking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For the athlete who is looking to increase flexibility, yoga provides that and much more. There are many who believe that by being more flexible, you can lengthen your muscles so as to give a more appealing physical image to yourself. Whatever the reason, yoga is a healthy and fun exercise that is best enjoyed on an individual basis. You can also sign up for classes with a friend and reap the benefits doubly. If you enjoy yoga, you may also enjoy pilates. Pilates tends to focus more on core body strength with a lot of abdominal exercises. It is also another type of activity that you can enjoy by yourself or with other people. However, if you're looking for a relaxing atmosphere, don't look for it with pilates. In a pilates class, you can expect to sweat and push yourself harder than you ever thought that you would. While many people find it difficult to set aside an hour or two of yoga practice each week, a 30 minute yoga session is finding its way into the lives of busy executives, financial brokers, teachers, bankers, and other people with very busy schedules and making a great impact in their everyday lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The body responds positively to 30 minutes of yoga exercise done routinely everyday or every alternate day, compared to an hour of yoga done each week. This half-hour yoga fits very well into the lives of people who can't spare an hour or two of practice because of their busy careers. 30 minutes a day is all it takes to reap the benefits of yoga as it stretches and lengthens the muscles and reduces the risk of injuries. It also gives balance and a sense of agility as we get older. It relaxes the muscles and reduces tension which minimizes pain that is associated with it while toning them to build stamina and endurance. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This daily incremental yoga session helps us to relax, clearing away tension in our body. As a result of that we benefit by getting higher levels of energy to carry out our daily chores and activities. The breathing practices in yoga helps to relax the muscles and the mind and brings the much needed oxygen to the cells in our system. This produces a sense calmness and confidence and also gives us better quality sleep as it clears away clutter and allows us to focus our attention on every aspect of our lives and be present in our current activity without having to worry about what has happened in the past or what is going to take place in the future.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The deep breathing in yoga reduces our stress level as it decreases the hormones in the body which are released when we are overwhelmed. The different yoga poses create a relaxation response and helps us to reach an inner state of calmness for more focus, alertness and attention. Many successful people routinely practices this 30 minute yoga each day to keep themselves in balance, alert and productive. The ancient yogis sought to harmonize the body, mind and soul in an effort to achieve health, long life, and ultimately, enlightenment.  Thus, the Sanskrit word yoga means union with or to join.  This union with the divine is achieved through the disciplined practice of specific exercises, meditation and breath work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yoga is essentially a lifestyle, dealing with all the aspects of our being. The physical postures, or asanas  that are widely perceived as yoga, are just one aspect of a very profound science of life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The Eight Limbs of Yoga, articulated by C.E. Patanjali in the Yoga Sutra,  &lt;/span&gt;describe the eight aspects of a yogic lifestyle.  These aspects guide the yogi on a path self-development to harmonize the body, mind and spirit and attain enlightenment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The Eight Limbs of Yoga:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The first limb, yama, &lt;/span&gt;focuses on one's behavior in the world and attitude towards those around him or her.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The five yamas are:&lt;/span&gt; ahimsa or nonviolence,  satya or truthfulness, asteya or non-stealing, bramacharya or non-lust, aparigraha or non-possessiveness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The second limb, niyama,&lt;/span&gt; refers to one's behavior and attitude towards oneself.  &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are five niyamas:&lt;/span&gt; sauca or cleanliness, santosha or contentment, tapas or austerity, svadhyaya or study of the sacred text and of oneself, and isvarapranidhama or living with an awareness of the divine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Asanas or physical poses are the third limb.&lt;/span&gt;  Asanas are designed to bring strength, vitality and relaxation to every bodily system.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Pranayama, or breathing exercises, encompass the fourth limb.&lt;/span&gt;  Through disciplined regulation of the breath-the duration of inhalation, retention and exhalation, one strengthens and cleanses the nervous system.  The result is increased life-force and a calmer mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The fifth limb is prathayara or withdrawal of the senses.&lt;/span&gt;  One's focus goes inward, losing awareness of what is going on outside of oneself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Dharana, or concentration is the sixth limb.&lt;/span&gt;  One trains the mind to focus without distractions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Dhyana, or meditation is the seventh limb.&lt;/span&gt;  In meditation one practices constant observation of the mind, stilling the mind in order to heighten one's awareness and oneness with the universe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The final limb, the ultimate goal of yoga,  is samadhi or enlightenment.  &lt;/span&gt;It is the achievement of oneness with the universe in which one experiences a state of peace, utter contentment and completion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yoga as it was designed and practices by the ancient yogis encompasses all these aspects of the self and of life. Like ballet, the promise of poise, grace and flexibility encourages much interest. Yet if yoga is like any other exercise, it is only at first glance. Underneath the coveted health and fitness benefits of modern yoga practice are the roots of a great spiritual tradition blending cultures and religions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately, through the westernization of yoga, we have lost an essential component of this peaceful practice.  Though the ritual remains intact the meaning has gone astray.  Where previously the postures of yoga practice were merely a branch of a tree; today they are viewed by western society as the tree itself. &lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;How do we bring meaning to our poses?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Modern Yoga’s Roots and Benefits&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Though the development of yoga cannot be pinned to an exact year, the discovery of the Indus seals, which show figures in the classic yoga asana (posture) of lotus pose, trace yoga back to at least 3000 BCE.   At this time the Vedas were being written, which today’s yoga postures are derived from.  These gave birth to Vedic yoga, which accommodated the ancient Indians fixation on ritual and sacrifice. We see evidence of the importance of sacrifice in the yogic corpse posture.  Lying as though we were placed in a coffin, this represents the ultimate sacrifice-that of death. Though seemingly morbid, corpse posture is one of hope when we understand that according to the Vedanta sutras, death results in liberation&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sacrifice was meant to join the material and the physical, and create the longed-for “union” that defines the word Yoga. The Vedanta sutras (vs.4:4,13-14) declare that the liberated soul is not materially motivated..  By asking us to free ourselves from the bondage of material motivation, compassion requires us to be selfless.   Surely, this giving is an exercise in compassion.   Even still, the modern practice of yoga facilitates this.  Through postures and stillness, we alter our consciousness and therefore change our perspective.   In our new realization of others as being part of the cosmic whole, we feel that in giving to them we are also giving to ourselves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ancient philosophy of yoga saw its postures as part of a greater whole. Thousands of years ago during the time of Astanga yoga, posture practice was one piece of a more important whole. Astanga yoga, which originated during Vedic India, was derived of eight branches; yama (control and discipline), niyama (rules, methods and principle), asana (posture), pranayama (focused breathing), prathyahara(avoidance of undesirable action),dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (contemplation).  In contrast, most contemporary yoga focuses on postures and uses breath work as a small component or an afterthought. Though admittedly, the current vision of yoga over-emphasizes asana, it is extremely important and has enormous benefits. The medically studied benefits of yoga include the following: Stress reduction, improved muscle strength and tone, increased energy and flexibility, improved balance and coordination and a reduction in depression.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Moving with Compassion&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Through most of asana practice, we are unconsciously engaging in physical metaphor.  Many yoga postures are named after and imitate the living world; tree pose, eagle pose, frog pose, cat pose. By developing postures that imitate the stance of animals, the vedic seers may have been seeking not only to embrace the qualities of these animals, but to formulate compassion for them.&lt;br /&gt;The way that compassion serves as a partner to yoga’s goal of liberation can be understood through reading the ancient yogic texts.  Understand these vedas; whether they be the Rig Veda (knowledge of praise),Yajur-Veda (knowledge of sacrifice), Sama Veda (knowledge of chants), and Atharva-Veda(knowledge of atharvan), is likelier while deep in meditation. Understanding the vedic sutras, we are permitted to experience a bliss unknown through material grasping.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In this state everyday experiences fade away and a greater perspective unfolds. Over time, meditation also allows us to become more intuitive and receptive. This opens us up to others, enhancing our compassionate nature. This experience has been discussed by Eastern sacred-text expert “H.P. Blavatsky’s in “The Voice of the Silence.” Blavatsky writes: “Compassion is no attribute. IT is the LAW of LAWS—eternal Harmony, Alaya’s SELF; a shoreless universal essence, the light of everlasting Right, and fitness of all things, the law of love eternal.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In order to experience compassion for others we must first extend it to ourselves. Straining too forcefully in a pose is counter to compassion. Why? Yoga teaches us that we are all connected, so when we hurt ourselves this pain eventually reaches others. Instead we must strive for gentle self-acceptance, competing with nobody-not even ourselves.
