Today, I’m going to explain how RSS can help you live your best life online.

We all have busy lives with very little time. Web surfing is fun but can take hours going to visit every single website and blog you enjoy. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if you could just get all the headlines of the most current stories from all your favorite websites and blogs in one place?

Well now you can, and it is called RSS feed.

The Oprah definition
The technical acronym for RSS is “Really Simple Syndication”, an XML format that was created to syndicate news, and be a means to share content on the web. Now, to geeks and techies that means something special, but to everyday folks like you and me, what comes to mind is, “Uh, I don’t get it?”

So, to make RSS much easier to understand, in Oprah speak, RSS stands for: I’m “Ready for Some Stories”. It is a way online for you to get a quick list of the latest story headlines from all your favorite websites and blogs all in one place."

Note: There are a few mp3 files in this blog. When you subscribe in itunes you will be able to listen to the recordings. Here is a video from Marco Torres a keynote from Alan November's conference and teacher from Fernando Valley High School in LA

The students who made this movie did this on their own after graduating from San . They moved onto higher and and enrolled in several prestigious colleges. The students did all the work on the movie while attending college and working collaboratively and online. How impressive is that!

To upload file to the web -

Options
1. School folder on the web
2. ISP account, comcast, verizon, etc
3. Create Accounts on ourmedia http://www.ourmedia.org/ and http://www.archive.org
4. See handout for other suggestions (.mac account, etc)

One file file is uploaded copy the hyperlink to your blog and thei file will open

Note: You can also use other integrated tools that allow you to upload a file directly into a blog, example podbean.

What is a Podcast?

What is a "podcast"? This question can be answered in several ways. A podcast is some what like a radio show that can be heard thorugh the Internet or downloaded to your MP3 player /ipod/CD and can be listened when you want to listen to it.

The wikipedia describes Podcasting as: the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio programs or music videos, over the Internet using either the RSS or Atom syndication formats, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. A person that produces a podcast is usually called a "podcaster". The word itself is a combination of "i-Pod" and "broadcasting" but you do not need an i-Pod to listen to a podcast or record a podcast.A "blog" is a web site which typically places new content at the top of the page and can contain pictures, links and audio content. Many blogs are very easy to create and there is no need to have knowledge of HTML code or complicated web design. Blogs and podcasts are often work together as a podcast can be placed inside a blog.

Creating Your Podcast on a PC using Audacity

The application we will be using today to capture and edit sound is a software application named "Audacity".Audacity is a free program that can be used with both a Mac or a PC. Using Audacity you can record directly to the computer using an inexpensive microphone and you can then edit and layer your sound tracks.The free download for Audacity can be found here

If you have questions later on using Audacity you can check out these online tutorials for additional help and tips: Audacity TutorialsYour finished product using Audacity will be a WAV sound file. A WAV sound file takes up much more memory than an MP3 file so we want to convert the file to MP3 using audacity with lame.

We will use an Audacity Tutorial created in Flash by Jason Van Orden
