By
         Mark G Jones

Minimalist home designs are often chosen by house owners these
days to refurbish or build their properties, because their simple and
seamless style makes their abode more comfortable and relaxing.
Minimalist design is influenced by the Japanese art elements of clean
lines and open spaces. It doesn't support elaborate features, clutter,
and unnecessary items that take up space.

If you'd like to apply
this principle on your own house's architecture, you have to focus on
being simple and keeping things at their most natural state. You should
choose a flatter roof and more open spaces. Try avoiding a roof
structure that has a steep pitch. For your interior house design, if you
need to have a private space, try avoiding permanent walls and use a
shoji or a sliding door, instead. In this way, you can still have an
open space when you don't need an enclosed area.
Flooring should
go with the simple and natural theme. Wood is often the choice for this
style. You can still have stone tiles, but refrain from the shiny types.
Muted stone tiles in earth colors would be best.
Wood beams,
walls, and countertops should be left in their barest look. If the item
is of wood material, the most you should do is have it stained to bring
out the natural beauty of the wood. Stone countertops should just be
polished also to bring out the grains and specks of the material. Metal
items should also just be polished and not painted.

Minimalist
home designs should have an overall look that's spotless and effortless.
When choosing paint for the walls, you can still veer away from white,
though. But you have to stay with the neutral shades like beige. The
strongest color you can pick is a pale shade of terra cotta. The
guideline in selecting colors for this type of design is to remain
creating the feel of open spaces. Colors that make an area feel enclosed
should be avoided. The idea is for your home to be in harmony with
nature. You can add mirror doors for a modern twist, if you wish.
Windows
are also crucial in creating open spaces in minimalist house designs.
Large sliding windows are ideal. If you need to use blinds, select those
made of bamboo or wood or those that are of neutral color. If you
prefer to use curtains, don't use ones with floral or ornate prints.
Choose those with sheer materials, preferably of white, beige, sand, and
other neutral hues.
These are just some ideas to help you have
your own home in the minimalist look that you want. You can add in your
own concepts to add personal touches. Simply keep in mind about open
spaces and being one with nature and you won't go wrong.

By
         Todd Clifton

Most interior designers know the importance of the role stair
parts play in contributing to the overall aesthetic of a home or
building.
More and more architects, designers and home owners are
looking to create a minimalist elegance in their interior space.
Creating the illusion of space and modernity is effective and relatively
easy to achieve.

Your stair parts can and should work hand in
hand with the other design features and furniture of your room. Here are
a few ways you can look to achieve a minimalist elegance through your
stairs.

Glass
Incorporating glass into the stair
parts is something that would have seemed quite radical only decades
ago. Both professional designers and everyday homeowners now realise the
contemporary edge glass can give a flight of stairs.
A popular
choice is to replace traditional wooden spindles with chic-glass panels;
this way the structural support and safety of wooden spindles is
achieved without creating the feel of a cage.
Glass' easy
maintenance is another added benefit to incorporating it into your stair
parts. It can be wiped clean with ease and restored to a like-new
state.

Metals
Another component of stairs that is becoming increasingly popular is the use of metals, particularly stainless steel brackets.
In
addition to the contemporary feel these brackets give the stairs, using
metal brackets in the stair parts adds excellent reinforcement to the
structure of the staircase. They also make the system of fitting the
stair parts easier than ever before and especially compared to joining
traditional wooden components.

Woods
Although
incorporating glass and metal into the stair design aids in achieving a
minimalist feel, your design will still ultimately rest upon your choice
of wood. Those looking for a contemporary feel will look to choose
beeches, oaks, hardwoods and pines.
Wooden flooring is a popular
choice for those looking to keep their home modern. Make sure you and/or
your interior designer factor in the relationship between the wood of
your stairs and the wooden flooring you have in your home.
It is
important to never view your stairs in isolation. The look and feel of
stairs online or in the store will change when they are placed within
the context of your building. The best home designers can always see the
bigger picture and choose the stair parts work best with the overall
aesthetic of the building. You should try to do the same.

         Mark Bradley

The Spanish Mission Style of Architecture served functional and
aesthetic purposes when it was first produced in California. "Padres" or
priests from Spain came to the coastline of California to build their
missions and convert the natives, and the style of the missions was a
reflection of the great cultural soup that was being prepared. Native
Californians used their skill, priests used their design aesthetic from
the old country, and the raw materials of their work would come from the
natural products off the coast of California.

The materials that
would eventually build the Spanish missions would later be used and
emulated for the Spanish mission style of architecture that later became
popular in California and elsewhere in the US. Buildings throughout Los
Angeles tried to emulate this style as it became more fashionable, and
even in other places across the nation, like in St. Louis, Missouri
where T.P. Barnett's Spanish Mission Style Deco building still stands.
The Barnett building was a fusion building of Spanish and Art Deco that
became incredibly popular in the 1920's, and today holds true to its
beauty and grace.
When Padres were trying to get their missions
built in California, they had a lot of difficulties to say the very
least. There was a scarcity of imported materials as well as a shortage
of skilled labor, so they had to use simple building materials and easy
methods of construction to get the job done. They gathered material and
workforce from the surrounding lands.
The 5 most important
materials they used were adobe, timber, stone, brick and tile, which are
all the staples of the style today. Adobe was a very innovative
material made from earth and water, chaff, straw and manure. These were
mud bricks, and they were very useful in this region of the US. The
method was originated in Spain and Mexico, so workers were easily able
to assemble the bricks that would make up the missions.

Level
ground was found, and the workers would put the mud mixture into brick
molds, and arrange them in rows to be leveled by hand to the top of the
mold's frame. Today, these bricks still have hand and fingerprints,
reminiscent of the people who once worked long hours. Some people even
inscribed names and dates on the bricks. California adobe was fairly
easy to make and handle, and lightweight for easy carrying.
The
Spanish Missions and the later Spanish mission style that would be
replicated get their look from the sort of "man-made" authentic quality.
There was no existent lumber, so workers used stone axes and crude saws
to shape the wood. The missions had a very distinct appearance thanks
to these crude methods, and later this appearance was greatly sought
after, and people would pay a high price for it.
The Spanish
Mission style came to be associated with luxury, ironically enough, and
today we see that style for all its elegance, simplicity, and style.
Going back to the T.P. Barnett building in St. Louis, all the elegance
and refinement of the Spanish mission style's potential is quite clear.

By
         Eric Erkin

One of the hottest current trends in interior design is the use
of Italian Bianco Carrara White Marble, not only as a design accent, but
also on bathroom floors, walls and showers as well as kitchen floors
and backsplashes. Consumers looking for a high quality finished product
with a more modern design are increasingly turning towards the unique
beauty of hexagon mosaics and another timeless classic, marble subway
tiles. Just like subway tiles, hexagon mosaics are also available in
different sizes, the most preferred being 1" hexagon mosaics and 2"
hexagon mosaics.
Nowadays, a new fashion set by designers is using
hexagon tiles for flooring in bathrooms or shower stalls and cladding
walls with subway tiles. Generally, an elegant looking marble rug motif
is created using basketweave tiles bordered with 1 inch hexagon mosaics;
cladding the walls with subway tiles compliments the all-over design.
An alternative to this application is 2 inch hexagons for flooring and
3x6 marble subway tiles for walls. Since both mosaics come with several
natural stone alternatives, colors, textures and either a honed finish
or a polished finish, the variations are almost endless, making it
harder to choose your final design which will, in the end, all depend on
your preference. But, the real question is marble or ceramic and glass
tiles? While it may seem that there is no correct answer to that, it's
no secret that choosing natural stone over glass or ceramic provides
more sophisticated look and a much healthier choice.

A main
concern of consumers when it comes to using marble mosaics on the floor
is whether a polished finish has the potential to be too slippery,
particularly when used on the bathroom floor. It is a common
misconception that polished finish marble tiles and mosaics are too
slippery when wet. Because the size of the individual hexagon shaped
tiles, a finished floor will have quite a bit of grout space, which
provides traction even when wet, allowing the customer to choose the
finish that works best with his or her design vision. Another frequently
asked question is about the maintenance and care of marble tiles. This
question was actually answered by the Greeks, Romans and Ottoman Turks
whose showering and bathing rituals are still famous and who always
preferred natural stones for their living environments, not only because
of the beautiful look provided by natural stone, but also for the
endurance and longevity of marble tiles. Marble tiles are also
remarkably easy to maintain. Marble is easily cleaned with plain water,
eliminating the need to use harsh and potentially toxic cleaning
materials on a regular basis.

Hexagon marble mosaics give your
design project a beautiful and classic finished look with a modern
flair. Using marble mosaics in any color Bianco Carrara, Crema Marfil,
or even White Statuary marble (also known as Italian Bianco Statuario)
will increase not only the beauty, but also the value of your finished
project. Purchasing marble products on the internet can be a daunting

By
         Mark Berger

So, what size fan do I need? I am installing into a room that is
this size by this size. What do I do? I don't know what size is
required.

This is a common problem when attempting to determine
the proper size of fan for the room you are looking to install into. You
may be looking to install in a large hall, dining room, living room or
other. The size of the fan you need to install is gauged upon the span
of the blades on your fan. The bigger the blade, the more air that
particular fan can move around the room you have chosen.

If you
want a really big fan to move a lot of air, look at purchasing an
industrial or commercial grade appliance. These fans are built for the
sole purpose of moving a large volume of air around. They are perfect in
shops, factories, and warehouse environments where the air can become
warm, stale and muggy. Keeping your employees cool is an important thing
- it will help to mantain their productivity. If they're extremely hot
all the time, it'll be difficult to get them to do their day to day
jobs.

The span of each blade is important. You want a fan that
moves enough air around to cool the entire room. Also, you want to avoid
putting a fan that will move too much air around. Below we have
recommendations on which fan you should install into your home, based on
the size of the room you're installing in. These recommendations are
based on the blade span of the fan - the length of each fan blade. The
larger blades will move more air and thus, are to be installed into
larger rooms.

Usually fans don't go larger then 56" in blade span.
However, some industrial and commercial fans can have blade spans up to
and including 60."
Small rooms - Rooms that are smaller then 64 square feet (8' x 8') should utilize a fan with a 32" blade span.
Medium sized rooms - If your room is up to 144 square feet (12' x 12') then utilize a fan with a 42" or 44" blade span.
Large
rooms - Rooms that are up to 225 square feet (15' x 15') should utilize
a fan with a blade span of 50", 52" and etc. up to a max of 56".

Are you thinking of laying pavements around your garden or
property? Not only such a construction is useful in enhancing the beauty
and aestheticism of the property but also allows people to walk around
the garden or take a brisk stroll in the evenings amidst natural bounty.
If you are thinking of landscaping your property, constructing a
pavement around the garden is an indispensable part of the project. But,
pavements need regular maintenance and services to remain in good shape
for years. Well-maintained pavements also enhance the look of the
property. Who will be able to handle such tasks professionally? Contact a
paving contractor who is able to deal with every type of pavements.

Reputed
and experienced contractors will be able to provide effective
maintenance services for the paved area in your property. Given below is
a brief but, comprehensive discussion on the 3 basic paved surfaces
that are dealt with by a paving contractor:

1. Flexible pavements -
It is basically a paved structure that comprises of several layers of
construction materials. Generally the best quality materials are used on
topmost layers. This is because the intensity, frequency and stress of
traffic are highest on the topmost layers. The surface stays tolerable
to heavy traffics and treads with regular maintenance. This type of
flexible paved area can be considered as a multi-layer system
comprising:
1. The surface course
2. Underlying middle base
3. Sub-base courses
4. All these layers together contribute towards facilitating
drainage, frost protection, and support. As these are vital aspects for a
convenient living, you should not ignore pavement maintenance.

2.
Perpetual pavements - The name basically describes a structural design
that stays intact for a considerably long time. However, a reputed
paving contractor in addition to using the best quality materials and
appropriate construction methods might suggest occasional maintenance
for this type. Thus, if you do not choose skilled and experienced paving
contractors, there can arise various problems like - permeability,
moisture retention, variability of density and segregation with depth.
Correctly maintained structures can withstand heavy stress and tension
without any structural deterioration.

3. Rigid pavements - The
surface course in this type is basically hydraulic cement concrete type.
The concrete slabs at the topmost layers provide the maximum strength
to the paved surface. As the name suggests, the rigid pavements are
stiffer than the other two types mentioned above. This stiffness or
rigidity is due to high elasticity modulus of the construction material.
It also results in considerably low deflections (the plate theory).
Nevertheless, this type of paved areas also requires regular maintenance
and repairs to prevent loss of rigidity.

By
         Garrett McGinnis

What are the advantages of using interlocking pavers?
o Numerous paving styles
o Unlimited color possibilities

o Create your own design
o Low relative lifetime cost, no regular maintenance
o 50%2B year life expectancy
o No cracking
o 3 times stronger than poured concrete
o Pavers move with soil conditions

The
many shapes, patterns, and colors of Concrete Pavers allow for design
creativity, as well as delineation of pavement areas, such as parking
lanes, cross walks, and intersections. The beauty of pavers adds value
and visual appeal to any property. By adding flexibility not possible
with rigid pavement, pavers can flow with existing landscaping to
deliver beauty to any property.
Proper installation of the product
results in a pavement that is rigid yet flexible. The joints between
pavers allow the driveway to move without cracking. In addition, they
can be unzipped to allow for repairs or access to utilities. Unlike
asphalt, pavers are virtually maintenance-free and do not need to be
regularly sealed or replaced. By definition, concrete pavers have a
minimum compressive strength of 8,000 psi (about 3 times stronger than
regular poured concrete) and a maximum water absorption rate of 5%.

Concrete
pavers are extremely dense units which possess exceptional strength and
durability, superior stability under severe loads, and are unaffected
by the extremes of heat and frost. Each unit has joints that allow for a
small amount of movement without cracking. Factory made pavers last for
decades.
Manufactured to tight dimensional tolerances, pavers are
stronger than regular poured concrete surfaces and more durable than
black asphalt. They can take more abuse and last for generations. A
segmental paving system allows for expansion and contraction without
producing surface cracks, unlike monolithic concrete surfaces and
stamped concrete.
Remove and reinstate the same pavers with no
ugly patches after repairs to the base or underground utilities.
Asphalt, concrete, and stamped concrete can't make this claim. Pavers
are low-maintenance and offer low life-cycle costs.

Stained or broken pavers can be easily replaced without patches. Darker colored pavers
can help hide stains. Ants and weeds in joints can be prevented with
sealers or herbicides. Pavers can be repaired by lifting the affected
area, re-grading and re-compacting the base and bedding sand and
reinstalling the same pavers. It is an inexpensive procedure that leaves
no unsightly repair patches.
Pavers are easy to maintain. Regular
sweeping and occasional rinsing are usually the most maintenance
needed. For heavy soiling, pressure washing or a simple spot treatment
with a brush, cleaner, water and some elbow grease will solve the
problem. We recommend that you re-sand the joints between the pavers
after a pressure wash.
On both vehicular and pedestrian
applications, pavers have a non-skid surface even when the pavers are
wet they are safe to walk or drive a vehicle over them.

By
         Santo Silvestro

You already know how important it is to maintain your aircraft's
mechanical safety standards throughout the year. But springtime, after a
long period of cold and inactivity, is a particularly important time to
conduct a thorough maintenance checklist. Here is an overview of
important things to check and address before you pull your plane out of
the hanger for the spring/summer flying season.

Review the aircraft's maintenance records.

A
smart first step to your spring maintenance checklist is to review your
aircraft's maintenance history. What repairs and preventative
maintenance have been done recently? Are there any repairs that have
been put off that should be done? Now is the time to do them, especially
any safety repairs per FAA Airworthiness Directives. These are safety
repairs that are required by the FAA to legally fly the plane.

Change the oil and check the fuel system.

Even
if you changed the oil and filled the gas tank before laying up your
plane for the winter, it's important to do a spring oil change and fuel
system check before getting airborne again. Old oil can become acidic
and cause corrosion and pitting of components, such as cam lobes and
bearings. Rust can then mix with the oil, causing extensive damage to
the engine.
Also check the fuel system. Remove the fuel filter,
clean and replace. Check for condensation in the fuel tanks, which is
common if the tanks were less-than-full and air is in the tanks. Water
in the bottom of the tank can cause corrosion. If pitot and static vent
covers were installed before the winter, remove them now. Check that the
fuel cocks are open and master switches are back on. Also check:
Condition of the fuel tanks and straps
Fuel lines for any damage or leaks
Fuel drains for water or foreign matter
Fuel valve for any damage or leaks
Fuel gauge for damage
While
an oil change and fuel system flush may seem a redundant expense now,
both can prevent much more expensive repairs later on.

Check the battery and other electrical components.

Check
and replace the battery if its age or condition is in question. A good
rule of thumb is to remove and inspect the battery every 50 hours of
use. Also check the condition of the battery leads and mounting
apparatus. Also check other electrical components, including circuits,
circuit breakers, wiring at terminals and radio and antenna.

Inspect tire pressure and wear.

Just
like on a car, tires have a tendency to lose air pressure over time.
Make sure your plane's tires are at their recommended psi. Also visually
inspect the tires for tread wear and bald spots. Also inspect the wheel
brake assembly for leaks and strut condition.

Test wing flaps, tail fins, propeller and landing gear.

Make
sure the propeller assembly, wing flaps, tail fins, landing gear and
landing gear doors are all in working order. Check that nothing is
loose, damaged or dirty.

Inspect for structural damage.

If
your aircraft was hangared inside, chances are low that it sustained
any winter damage. But it's smart to do a pre-flight walkaround anyway.
Look for any hairline cracks or structural damage on the fuselage and
wings due to wind or even contact with another plane. Check gaskets and
seals to make sure they aren't corroded or dried out. Also inspect the
air intake and cowling, stall warning vent, pilot tube and static ports
for animals - small rodents and birds may have built nests in these and
other areas.

Give it a good wash.

Finally,
give the aircraft a good outside washing and interior cleaning. Make
sure no dirt or foreign substances can interfere with wing flap and tail
fin operations. A reminder to wash windows in an up and down motion -
don't swirl in circles as this may scratch the windows.

         Al Hardy

You may want to redesign your home, but fear of the cost is
holding you back. That's simply not true. A little imagination can
easily lead to a low cost DIY project, all you need is a little
enthusiasm. This article will teach you some great tips that will not

break the bank.
When replacing kitchen countertops, it is not
always necessary to go for what's commonly popular. Less traditional
materials like wood, cork or concrete can really make a statement. You
may find these to be not only unique, but also easily affordable.
Mirrors
are a great way for you to increase the perceived size of a room.
Mirrors make a space seem bigger, which adds to the appeal of the room.
Make sure that you purchase a quality mirror, as you may have this for a
long time.
You can save a lot of money getting some items, like
lamps, from garage sales. Even if they aren't perfect, you can always
put a great shade on them and place them in less visible locations. You
will be able to put money in your pocket by buying it at a yard sale and
also make your room look awesome.
Plan ahead, especially when
decorating a small room. You have to take your space into account first.
Try to find multi-functional furniture to make a small space seem
larger. Adding adequate lighting with these items can cause a small room
to appear larger.
As you put together a budget for interior
design, keep your goals at the front of your mind. What are your top
priorities and what do you want to spend? Without these guidelines, you
can overspend or not get anything important finished.

A smart tip
about interior design is to always be consistent. If you pair a
beautiful indoor gas fireplace with a ratty old couch, that will seem
almost silly. You must pick a theme and set a mood for your design so
everything meshes well together.
It is generally a good practice
to make sure all the flooring in each level of your home match. You
should use consistent flooring or complementary flooring throughout.
This will create a natural flow from each room.
If you have a
small home, fill the rooms with light colors. Wall and drapery in light
colors will give the illusion that your small space is bigger. Applying
dark paint colors to your walls will make a large room feel smaller and
cozier.
It may sound strange, but before choosing a paint color or
design theme, it is best to choose the overall mood you want for the
room. Your moods can vary so you want to create one in the room you are
decorating. Choosing a mood helps give you an overall guideline for what
you are going to do in the room.
An excellent way to add interest
to a room is to incorporate a variety of textures or patterns in the
space. These textures help to draw the eye and add interest to otherwise
boring items. If you are going for a modern look, using textures and
patterns is key.

Furniture is not your only focus in a room. You
have to also think about the walls. Walls that are totally bare never
look great. Add art to your wells to give the room a polished
appearance. Be sure the art that you select blends well with the
furnishings in your room. It is not wise to put up black velvet
paintings.
When hanging some art in one of your rooms, make sure
it is hung at approximately eye level so that the best possible effect
is achieved. Art that is either too low or too high just doesn't look
good in a room and shows you don't have style.
Think in terms of
"3" whenever you are designing a room. This is especially true of
accents that are hung on walls. You can put them in rows, or stagger
them; however you want to do it, the general rule usually works great.
Select
a coffee table that is a little out of the ordinary. Instead of using a
typical coffee table, use something unique as table, such as a chest or
boxes. Check out flea markets, or even your own attic, to get
inspiration for old items that you can use in a new way.
When
re-designing a room, give extra thought to the color scheme you will be
using. Make sure you choose colors that will go together to give your
room an overall great look. Remember, too much variety in bold colors
can have a negative impact.
This article should have shown you
that it can be very easy to make your home better by using a little cash
to decorate your space. When you use all of the tips in this article
you can seriously brighten up your home and give off great vibes to all
guests.

Lego bricks. Creativity. Childhood. They go together like Mickey
Mouse and Disney, wizards and Harry Potter. Lego has been a part of
childhood for more than three generations. Nearly everyone under 50 has
played with these building blocks of imagination. There is no telling
how many engineers and scientists were spawned by these plastic building
blocks.
Lego is
synonymous with plastic toy bricks that can be
easily transformed into buildings, space ships, cars, boats, trains and a
myriad of other toys. The key is that the child gets to assemble the
toy from the basic building blocks. Each toy can be assembled,
disassembled and reassembled in enough new shapes and forms to tickle
the imagination and stretch the youngster's creativity.
Today,
Lego is much more that the simple blocks invented in 1949. It is toys,
theme parks, movies, and CDs. Lego building blocks and other products
are distributed around the world. These tiny plastic bricks and the
company they have built, are a phenomenon with a success as remarkable
as Mickey Mouse.
Lego Bricks Become The Building Blocks Of Fantasy

Where did Lego come from and how did it get to be such an important tool for childhood creativity?
Our
story begins in Billund, Denmark. It is 1932. Master carpenter and
joiner Ole Kirk Kristiansen opened a new business. His little company
makes stepladders, ironing boards and wooden toys. He has just six
employees. Nobody could have imagined, but Lego and the little building
blocks of imagination had just been born.
Two years later,
Kristiansen adopted the name Lego as a brand name for his toys. The name
is derived from the Danish words "leg godt," which mean "play well."
Ironically, he later discovered that Lego in Latin means "I put
together." Lego has truly come to mean "put together" and "play well" in
virtually every language. At this time, all of the company's toys were
being made from wood.

In 1942, the Lego factory burned to the ground. Kristiansen rebuilt.
In
1947, the Lego Company became the first company in Denmark to buy an
injection-molding machine. It began making plastic toy dolls and other
toys. The famous bricks were yet to be invented.
It was not until
1949 that the Lego company introduced the Automatic Binding Brick, a
little plastic brick, some with four studs and some with eight. At this
time, the company was producing about 200 different plastic toys. The
Automatic Binding Brick was sold exclusively in Denmark.
By 1950,
plastic toys became half of the company's business. Ole Kirk's son,
Godtfred Kirk, who had worked in the company since age 12, was appointed
junior vice president at age 30.
In 1954, Godtfred Kirk made a
trip to England to meet with a purchasing agent. The purchasing agent
told Kristiansen that he thought the Automatic Binding Bricks lacked an
idea and system. Godtfred returned to Denmark. The Lego System was
developed.
The following year, Godtfred introduced the Lego System at a toy
fair in Germany. It was the first time it was introduced outside of
Denmark. The results were disappointing. Kristiansen did not give up.
Later that year, the Lego System Play was developed. It was an improved
system for the Lego bricks. The Lego System Play was exported to Sweden,
where it sold well.

In 1959, Lego bricks and the Lego System were introduced in Great Britain, France, and Belgium.
It
wasn't until 1961 that Lego bricks were first marketed in the U.S. and
Canada. They were an immediate hit and distribution around the world
continued. By the end of that decade, 843 people in Billund worked for
the Lego company. The first Legoland film was produced. In 1969, the
DUPLO system for children under age five was introduced.

By 1970, there were almost 1,000 employees at the plant in Billund.
In
1980, the Educational Products Department was established. The DUPLO
Rabbit logo was introduced and a survey showed that 70 percent of all
Western European families with children under age 14 had Lego in their
home.

As 1990 unfolded, the Lego Group had become one of the
world's 10 largest toy manufacturers and the only toy company of that
size in Europe. The others were in Japan and the U.S. More than one
million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park and Godtfred Kirk
Kristiansen celebrated his 70th birthday. Lego Publishing was renamed
Lego Licensing and the LEGOLAND Band issued an LP.
With the
beginning of the new century, LEGO continues to grow. It has also
continued to remain a family owned company. These days, Kjeld Kirk
Kristiansen, the grandson of Ole Kirk, runs the company.
In 2003, a
record 1.63 million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park in Billund.
The Lego mini-figure celebrated its 25th birthday and the BIONICLE film
"Mask of Light" was released to great success. Representations of the
Lego mini-figures Biff Starling and Sandy Moondust are the first
earthlings to reach the planet Mars onboard the NASA Mars rovers
"Spirit" and "Opportunity." The Lego Education Center in Shanghai
opened. The concept was aimed at children from age three to age twelve.
There are more than 80 Lego Education Centers in Korea alone. http://www.lego.com receives around four million visitors per month.

Lego
bricks are more than just building blocks. They are learning toys. They
build on favorite themes and children's stories and allow the child to
exercise his or her own imagination and creativity. Offshoots of the
basic brick include such toys as Lego Robotics, Star Wars Lego, Harry
Potter Legos and many other building toys and kids' games. It is truly
amazing what a few bricks and a full measure of imagination will
produce.

Moscow is believed to be a very expensive city. However, it's
amazing to discover how much it can offer for those traveling on a
budget. Many of Moscow attractions are free for a visitor and yet they
are among must-see
sights of the city.

Streets and squares
Moscow
is a beautiful old city; it's nice to walk around it to feel the flavor
of its history. Explore the famous Red square with its majestic
architectural ensemble, walk along Tverskaya and Arbat sreets, go to
Lubanka square to see the notorious KGB house. Sparrow Hills offer a
breathtaking panoramic view of Moscow. Not far from the observation
platform you'll see a majestic building of Moscow State University

Moscow historic shops
Probably
the most well-known shop in Moscow is GUM (GUM is the abbreviation for
the State Department Store). This elegant building is one of the main
attractions on Red square. Gum was built in 1888-93 in the Russian
historic style and it was in fact the first department store in Moscow.
Luckily this building has survived up to now; it strikes our imagination
with beautiful interior and extremely high prices. Another famous shop
is Eliseevsky grocery store on Tverskaya street. It was founded by a
tradesman Grigory Eliseev more then 100 years ago. Entering this grocery
store you feel like a guest at the reception in a rich palace.
Eliseevsky Grocery store attracts visitors not only with delicacies but
also with fabulous Art Noneau interiors.

Lenin's mausoleum
The leader of the October Revolution was buried in a granite
mausoleum on Red Square. Despite debates in Perestroika times his body
is still kept in the tomb. The mausoleum is open for the visitors and
can be viewed 10 am-1 pm every day except Monday and Friday. Behind the
tomb are graves of the Soviet leaders (Stalin, Brezhnev, Andropov and
others except Khrushev), notable politicians, military leaders,
cosmonauts and scientists. The mausoleum is a popular tourist
destination so in high season it might take you more then an hour to
stand in line.

Christ the Savior Cathedral
Christ
the Saviour Cathedral is the biggest Eastern Orthodox Church in the
world. The original old cathedral was built in the 19th century to
celebrate the victory over Napoleon. It was blown up in 1931. The
majestic building was reconstructed in 2000, it has become the symbol of
the redemption for the sins of the previous century. Today this is the
main church of Moscow and it fascinates its visitors with majestic
interiors.

Moscow museums
Here're some interesting museums that are free for visitors.
Gorky
museum. The famous Soviet writer Maxim Gorky used to live here. But
this museum is interesting not only for literature lovers; it attracts
those who love arts. This house is really a unique building, one of the
finest examples of Art Noveau in Moscow. It was designed by the talented
architect Fyodor Shekhtel in 1900. The house is worth seeing for its
fabulous decor.
The museum of Christ the Savior Cathedral. Under
the cathedral is the gallery that tells the story of this place. Here
one can find lots of interesting old photos showing old Moscow, Soviet
projects of the Palace of the Soviets, swimming pool that used to be
here. Part of the gallery offer temporary art and photo exhibitions.
The museum of unique dolls has Russian and European dolls, some rarities are more then 300 years old.

Parks and Gardens

By
         Richard Romando

The proper care of a building foundation is very important to
preserve the building?s structure. Certain types of soil exhibit the
tendency to expand when wet, which can cause trouble if a building is
constructed on top of such soil. Therefore, it becomes necessary to
maintain a constant level of moisture in the soil supporting a building.
The main objective of foundation maintenance is to preserve constant
moisture content in the soil around and below the foundation of
a
building and to prevent soil erosion.

Foundation maintenance
software helps discover the areas under and around a structure, which
have wet spots such as faucets and drains and require maintenance. It
determines the water content and flow in gardens and nurseries in case
of sprinkler and irrigation systems. It also provides alerts for termite
damage in buildings with wooden construction.

Good foundation
maintenance software alerts the user when the foundation suffers from
improper draining, excess dryness of soil, excess watering near the
foundation or plumbing leaks. They also warn the user of the presence of
runoff water which has not been properly diverted away from the
foundation or the presence of roots of large bushes or tree, growing too
close to the foundation.

The use of foundation maintenance
software has helped homeowners and property managers to maintain their
buildings in better condition. However, the area of foundation
maintenance software has not been vastly explored, as a result of which
foundation repairs alone cost over 12 billion dollars annually. Neglect
by builders and homeowners have lead to the deterioration in the
foundations of buildings, which has increased the need for repairs.

Very
few software companies or vendors exclusively sell foundation
maintenance software. Even though the software is sold occasionally as a
stand-alone application, it mostly appears as a part of another
software such as property or facility maintenance software.

By
         Mob Jarrock

If you've ever decorated any space, ever, you've probably found
yourself wondering how to properly mix and match different patterns,
colors and designs. In the interior design magazines and on television,
this can almost seem effortless. Fortunately, there are a few tips and
tricks you can use in your own space to create the same effortless look
of mixing and matching different patterns and colors. Here are a few
tips and tricks on how to do
exactly that.

Pick a Starting Point
This
is the biggest obstacle you will overcome when starting this journey.
Just, pick a starting point. This is true of every different type of
interior design, if you don't pick a starting point, you'll never get
started. Don't be afraid to just dive right in. A starting point could
be anywhere: the walls, a piece of furniture, a throw rug. Anything that
helps get you started.

Maintain the Solid
Before
you can start adding patterns into your space, you need to have a place
for the eye to settle on in your interior design. A space that gives
the eye a break. Without it, your space will become visually chaotic.

Focus on the Color
When
mixing and matching different patterns and designs in your space, you
want to pay attention to the color. It's easier to pull different
patterns together if they share a similar color. For example, you could
mix stripes in black and white with an ikat pattern; or an ikat pattern
with a floral pattern that features the same colors. You can use this
concept in just about any space out there: living room designs, bedroom
designs, even kitchen designs or bathroom designs.

Pay Attention to Shape and Scale of the Patterns
Of
course, it's also important to pay some attention to the shape and
lines of your chosen patterns. It's relatively easy to mix and match one
or two different patterns in a single space with different shapes, but
once you start incorporating multiple patterns into the space, things
can get a bit overwhelming. So be sure to pay attention to the lines and
shapes. Your interior design will thank you.
It's also important
to pay attention to the scale, or the size, of the pattern. Larger
patterns can be complimented by small patterns in similar shapes and
colors and vice versa. You can also mix and match similar sizes, but be
wary of mixing three, four or more, as this can result in a chaotic
look.
Mixing and matching patterns, designs and different colors
can be a bit difficult. However, it can be done but it takes time and
patience. Don't rush the process, as you'll end up with a look that is
less than visually pleasing.

In spring, we often see very strong storms. Many times, the wind
blows so hard that trees topple over. This is especially true if the
tree is already old, weak or has no foundation of firm roots.
I
have a beautiful tree in the middle of my backyard. Last year, while
having an annual tree trimming, the service informed me of a deep crack
in the middle of the tree. The tree service also told me there was no
way to save the tree. Therefore, they suggested I cut the huge tree
down. However, my instincts told me differently. Instead of removing the
tree, I called another service and asked their opinion. They said that
even though the tree was weakened by the crack, it could be strengthened
by cabling the trunk together. However, they also warned that there was
no guarantee that a very strong wind would not split the tree in two
despite any cabling. In the end, I opted to trust my intuition and cable
the tree.
Throughout the year, despite my gut telling me that
everything would be OK, whenever a strong wind came up, I would watch
anxiously to see if the tree could withstand the strain. As each storm
came and went, my beautiful tree managed to stay upright, and continued
to grow.
Several months ago, it was time again to trim my tree.
When the tree service arrived, I inquired about the health of my tree.
They showed me the crack in the tree. To my amazement, the tree had
begun to heal itself. The cable not only reinforced the strength of the
tree, but also allowed it to heal. With this knowledge, the service felt
the tree had an excellent chance of living for many years.
Many
times, we are like my tree-weak in our foundation. Therefore, we may
feel as if we do not have the strength to weather the storms of life.
However, you may not realize it, but you have more strength than you
know. It is the spirit of God within you. The spirit is the cable that
can help you withstand any storm. Furthermore, that cable can renew and
heal you. There is no guarantee that you still will not topple over
because each of us has choice. Either we can choose to allow the spirit
to heal us or, conversely, we can ignore it. Why not recognize the
beautiful spirit that is part of you, helping you grow higher and
higher, fortifying you against any gust of wind?

Post-tensioning is a process of reinforcing and prestressing
concrete. Stresses are brought into the concrete using bars or strands
of steel while it is being constructed. The strands of steel are
typically used in horizontal construction such as foundations and beams.
Steel bars are used for vertical purposes such as columns and walls.
Typical
steel strands used in post-tensioning have a tensile strength of
270,000 pounds/in². In comparison, a typical non-prestressed piece of
reinforcing has a tensile strength of 60,000 psi. Strands typically have
a diameter of 1/2 in., and are stressed to a force of 33,000 pounds.
The stresses brought into the concrete offset the expected external
loads the concrete will be subjected to.
In post-tensioning the
steel is held in a duct, which stops the steel and concrete from binding
after the concrete solidifies. The steel can then be stressed after the
concrete sets. This is usually done in two stages. The first prestress
applied is up to 50% of the final force and this is done when the
compressive strength reaches 12-15N/mm².
The second stage is when
the final stressing occurs and this is done when the concrete meets its
design strength. The strands and bars are tensioned by stretching them
with a hydraulic jack. They are then fixed in place with an anchoring
component, which holds the force in them for the life of the building.
Post-tensioning allows the engineer to have all the benefits of using
prestressed concrete while keeping the freedom of constructing on site.
Concrete
is very strong in compression and weak in tension. Steel however is
very strong in tension. By combining the two materials we create a
component, which is strong in both tension and compression. More
benefits can be found by using the steel to place the concrete into
compression. This increases it's tensile strength, which allows for
longer spans and thinner sections. It also helps to stop the formation
of shrinkage cracks, which in turn stops moisture passing through the
material.
The more the concrete is compressed, the less likely it
is that cracking will occur. Using post-tensioned concrete allows for
flexible column spacing and structural depth.

In fact, the development of the modern industry has taken many
influences on our daily life. The water faucets are common to see in
many houses, which control the water in pipelines. And it is also one
type of the water stop valve. Water stop valve refers to the valve which
turns water on and off. And the internally located seat in it is
designed to seal the valve to prevent the water from coming through. If
the seat fails to work, it is necessary to replace it immediately in
case of further damages or industrial accidents.
It should be
mentioned that the replacing process is rather easy. And all the tools
you need are the wrench and flat-head screwdriver. Before the actual
beginning of the replacing process, it is necessary and important to
turn off the main valve.
At fist, try to drain out of the water in
the entire system. You can turn the attached tap off to let the inside
water totally out of. Secondly, you need to ensure the place which needs
fixing. In fact, you can use the flat-head screwdriver to pry the cap
from the center of the handle of the faucet. Thirdly, pry the screw
under the cap off by the aid of the screwdriver. Afterwards, you can
pull off the valve stem. By using the wrench, it is able to remove the
locking nut on the valve stem.
At this moment, it is time for you
to manually remove the valve handle and valve stem by turning them
counterclockwise. Fourthly, take the rubber seat out by using a
flat-head screwdriver. It is important to recognize the type of this rubber seat.
They can be either the beveled seat or the flat seat. No matter what,
it is necessary to find the matching replacement. You can find it in you
tool box or you can go to a nearby store to by it. Remember that the
proper one is needed indeed. Once you have found the needed rubber seat
of the water stop valve, try to put all fittings back to their places in
counter sequence. Once these steps have done, it is necessary to press
the cap back with your thumb or forefinger. At last, turn on the main
valve to check for leakage or other performance. If there are some other
unpleasant situations, stop the operating and do further inspection in
time. If there is none, congratulations! You have done a successive job.

More and more people are drawn to the beach for vacations or to
build a primary or secondary residence. The allure of the coast is
powerful with the beautiful vistas, fishing, boating, or just walking on
the beach. Before deciding to purchase a home or condominium on or
close to the beach, it would be wise to understand the effects of
hurricanes in that location. Let's look at which coastal locations are
most likely to have a hurricane strike and which effects could pose
problems to you.

Hurricane "hot zones"
Any coastal
location on the eastern seaboard or Gulf coast has a risk from
hurricanes. When you choose to build or buy a home on the coast, there
is a chance that it could suffer serious damage or be destroyed. Due
to the layout of the geography, some locations are less likely to see a
hurricane strike. For example, the northeast Florida and Georgia coast
has a smaller chance of seeing a hurricane than the coast north or south
of the area due to the concave shape of the coast. Also, hurricanes are
less frequent on the Mid-Atlantic and New England coasts because of
colder offshore water temperatures and the fact that hurricanes usually
move northeast away from the coast at that latitude. The most likely
location to be affected by a hurricane is south Florida, specifically
the Florida Keys. This is a climatologically favored location for
hurricanes to track from the Atlantic Ocean. Over the past roughly 100
years, this location averages a minimal hurricane about once every four
to five years. A major hurricane - category three or higher on the
Saffir-Simpson scale can be expected about once every ten years.
The
second most likely location to be affected is eastern North Carolina.
Hurricanes many times recurve north, then northeast near the Southeast
coast. Eastern North Carolina is far enough to the east that makes this
stretch of land vulnerable. This location can expect to see a minimal
hurricane on average about once every five to eight years. A major
hurricane is only likely to return once every twenty or more years on
average. For those interested in living on the gulf coast from
northwest Florida to Texas, a minimal hurricane is seen about once every
seven to twelve years. The southeast Louisiana coast is slightly more
frequent. Keep in mind that averages can be misleading. Hurricane
climatology shows some decades had "favored" patterns. Some favored the
Gulf coast, other decades the east coast. So it's possible for a
location to see a hurricane strike a number of times, and then be quiet
for decades.

Hurricane effects
The effects from a
hurricane include flooding from heavy rain, wind damage, tornadoes and
storm surge. Flooding rain and tornadoes can occur well inland and do
not make a difference in the location for buying a home. Buying a home
far enough inland away from the effects of storm surge would minimize
that aspect of hurricane damage. Locations on the coast are not only
suspect to the rise in water with the storm surge, but also the
battering effects of waves. The wind damage effects are also
concentrated on the coast. The reason for this is because tropical
cyclones lose their strength once moving over land. It is still possible
to have very strong winds well inland with major hurricanes.

Summary
The
most likely location to see the effects from a hurricane is south
Florida, with eastern North Carolina second. Remember, it is possible
for any location on the east or Gulf coasts to be hit by a
hurricane. You can always choose to buy or build a home farther inland
and still somewhat near the coast and be considerably safer.

Shooting up over 3,280 feet into the air, Kingdom Tower will be
the world's first kilometer-high skyscraper-and it won't be anywhere
near Chicago. The lakefront condo, hotel and office building is part of a
massive development planned for the new Waterfront District in Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia. The soaring tower will anchor a large, multi-structure
complex called Kingdom City that is expected to cost $20 billion to
build. So what does that have to do with Chicago? Two Windy City
architects were selected to head-up the project, beating out several
other major architecture firms who entered a design competition to
create this never-before-attempted structural feat.

The
Chicago-based architecture team of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill will
travel halfway around the globe for this next job-a massive 5.7
million-square-foot endeavor that will house a Four Seasons Hotel,
luxury condominiums, apartment rentals, office space and, why not?-the
highest observatory on the planet. Exceeding the height of the current
tallest building in the world by over 560 feet, this record-shattering
tower is going to be an engineering marvel that puts Smith in first
place of the tallest building race-again. He was the lead architect on
Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which presently holds the title. He also had a
hand in Chicago's own Trump International Hotel & Tower (originally
designed to surpass the Sears Tower in height but was ultimately made
shorter to protect the lofty status of Chicago's trademark structure).

Due
to its astonishing verticality, Kingdom Tower's blueprints call for an
especially sophisticated elevator system that includes 59 cars (some
that are double-decker). It will also have escalators that go 10 meters
per second (around 20 mph). The structural engineering of the tower is
incredibly important because its upper sections will endure very strong
wind speeds. This led to an aerodynamic design with three petal-like
wings that taper as they go up. The result is a sleek, needle-esque form
that Smith and Gill say is inspired by the shoots of young desert
plants coming up through the ground with fronds that have not yet
separated. (Think of a new palm shoot before it opens out.) The base of
the tower has an organic feel with large, skylight-filled overhangs and a
wavy horizontal contour.

As is popular in any building design
these days, Kingdom Tower's structure incorporates high-efficiency and
energy-saving features. It will also have shaded outdoor verandas and a
special cantilevered sky terrace off the 157th floor, reserved as an
exterior amenity space for the penthouse level.
While it is sure
to be the center of attention, Kingdom Tower is only a part of the big
picture for Kingdom City. Smith + Gill have also been commissioned to
draw up plans for a utopian community in the Waterfront District that
boasts a pedestrian-friendly shopping, entertainment, residential and
hotel quarter with landscaped outdoor areas and scenic lakefront condos,
commercial buildings and other amenities. Certainly an impressive
undertaking-but nothing two pros from Chicago can't handle.

By
         Joseph Devine

The increasing problems with illegal immigration into the United
States have prompted a controversial plan: building a "Great Wall of
Mexico." This wall would theoretically deter thousands of would-be
immigrants, either from Mexico or immigrating by way of Mexico, from
entering the United States. CNN estimates that there are about 20
million illegal immigrants residing in the U.S. However, is a giant
fence really going to help solve this problem?

First of all, we
have to determine why illegal immigration is such a detriment to
society. If we are currently functioning with as many as 20 million
aliens present in our country, why stop illegal immigration now? Some
people argue that non-naturalized citizens compete with legal residents
for jobs. In the current state of the economy, this can definitely be a
big deal. Second, a large amount of tax dollars goes towards immigrants,
either as health care or border patrol against immigration. After
these, there are a number of other complaints such as increased crime,
spread of disease, and possible terrorism, among others.

Currently
in effect are multiple cameras and sensors along the Texas-Mexico
border. Citizens can actually create accounts to participate in the
Border Watch, monitoring the cameras online at their own computers.
However, the program has been called unsuccessful and a waste of money.
This is unsurprising considering that there is only one camera per about
every 70 miles of the border.
With the problems of sneaking into
the United States still rampant, legislators have looked to other
methods to keep border-crossers out. In the Secure Fence Act, passed in
September of 2006, the United States Congress voted to build a fence
along the border with Mexico. The fence was proposed to be a
double-layer, 700 mile-long monstrosity built in several sections from
California to Texas. This wall was supposed to be finished by the end of
2008, but it has not yet been completed as of July 2009.

Perhaps
the completion of the wall has stalled due to the high amount of
opposition to building the fence. Mexican President Felipe Calderon has
compared the U.S.-Mexico fence to the Berlin Wall. Chief among the
American opposition is the city of Brownsville. The government has
proposed to purchase private lands-some held in the same family for
generations-in order to build the fence.

As for those concerned
for the environment, the Great Wall of Mexico would cut through the
Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The land is home to 17
endangered or threatened species of organisms, as well as the only
piece of American soil where some species can be seen.
Taking all
this into account, there are definite pros and cons of building the
Great Wall of Mexico. Illegal immigration is a hot topic, and we have
yet to see how the fence will culminate in American history.

If
you or someone you know needs more information on becoming a naturalized
citizen, a good source of immigration lawyers can be found here.

Model railway enthusiasts indulge themselves in one of the most
popular hobbies in the world, and Canadian model trains in particular
have carved themselves a substantial slice of the pie in terms of
overall popularity. The history of the railroad network in Canada speaks
volumes for the daunting challenges faced and met by the railroad
pioneers, who developed the railway system, and who designed and built
the incredible locomotives and rolling stock specialized to establish
the incredible infrastructure that still spans the nation today.
For
each and every Canadian model train, is a tribute to its pioneers; the
machines that they created and brought to life. Those metal giants, that
huffed and puffed their way across Canada, billowing smoke and
radiating power and majesty.
The serious model train hobbyist is a
highly skilled specialist who not only builds locomotives and rolling
stock from bronze or die-cast kits of bogies, chassis' and motors. They
take their passion for modeling into all aspects of the railroad world,
building dioramas that come to life in displaying Canadian railroading
in all their glory in a true to life model working environment.
Some
enthusiasts buy their locomotives and rolling stock straight out of the
model stores already fully built and ready to run. For them the delight
is in building the track layouts, and the dioramas they create are
truly awesome. A Canadian model steam engine, working earnestly away,
pulling its load, billowing model smoke, and utilizing thundering sound
effects (steam engine, level crossing, cattle truck sounds, etc.) in a
realistic layout is something extraordinarily special to behold.
Canadian
train enthusiasts have banded together and have created some incredible
websites that display some superb photos of their members' layouts.
There are forums and newsrooms too, all dedicated to preaching the word
and spreading the gospel of Canadian model trains in action, to the rest
of the modeling world.
Many Canadian model train clubs support
their members' endeavors to construct fantastic dioramas in a knock down
form that can be transported all over Canada where they assemble them
in venues across the nation for fellow hobbyists to see, take wonder in,
and enjoy. For these people there is no financial reward, merely a
covering of the costs they incur in travelling and overnight expenses.
For these guys and gals, the real reward is the delight that they see in
the eyes of those who come to see and celebrate their exhibitions.
Some
of the needed modeling to create the lifelike layouts is almost beyond
belief. They are more than labors of love; they are labors of passion
and commitment. There is no greater thrill than watching a Canadian
trains crossing the Rocky Mountains, weaving its way in and out of
tunnels, and all of the scenery built faithfully by hand!
Even for
those who have not developed the modeling skill, but who buy much of
their scenery from a model store, they still have that desire and
passion to assemble a truly impressive background that brings their
Canadian model trains to life.
Once truly bitten with the Canadian
railroad bug, you will never look back. You will enter a whole new
world in miniature; a world that celebrates all that is great about the
Canadian model train.

     By
         Douglas R Small

Earthquake retrofit is a process used in construction to make the
house strong during natural calamities. The aim of doing earthquake
retrofit is to make the structure tough against earthquakes and various
seismic activities.
Seismic retrofitting is another name for
retrofit. Making the building tough against tremors, vibrations in the
ground, motion of the earth etc, is the sole reason why you should
prefer experts. Never rely on inexperienced contractors. Instead,
contact experienced contractors to have a sigh of relief about the
process of earthquake retrofit.

Keep in mind that no process can
completely protect the building against the earthquake. But through the
process of retrofit, one may make the structure safer and active even to
the slightest ground movement. For new buildings it's very easy to
install with this type of facility and the old ones can also be well
equipped, if experts are called in. The contractors of highest calibre
have confirmed that majority of the damage is caused due to the
foundation wall clashing with each other. To prevent the clash, one has
to get the retrofit contractor who excels in the technique to make clash
proof walls. They could be regarded as the one who deals with all kinds
of stuff. They use the strongest material, which stops the foundation
walls to fall against each other.

Earthquake retrofit is basically
done for three main reasons: Safety to public - It is the first and
foremost motive. This process ensures public safety during earthquake.
Structural Survival - People do retrofit to save their buildings.
Maximum damage is avoided through this process and the buildings can be
brought to their original shape with less expenditure. Structural
Functionality - Structural functionality is the third reason for
retrofit and this is to maintain the proper functions of the building
even in the worst case scenario. Getting earthquake retrofit done is
compulsory to be on the safe side, when the earthquake strikes.

Earthquake
retrofit is a structural strengthening process which starts at the
foundation of the property. There are different aspects intended for
commercial and residential properties. The most common aspects of
residential properties: Bolting - every 6' around the perimeter for one
story properties, or every 4' around the perimeter for two story
properties. Shear panelling (the cripple walls) - the build-up walls
which provide the crawl space to construct the basement must be
reinforced with blocking between the studs at the top and bottom in
addition to panelling nailed to outside the studs. Bracketing (the floor
joists) - tying in the floor where it meets the perimeter walls.
Securing the post and pier system under the flooring system with wood
and steel strapping. On average, the cost to retrofit a 2,500 square
foot property with all four residential earthquake retrofit aspects is
$4,500. Construction companies engaged in earthquake retrofit are well
versed in the current conditions and what the different cities require.
Moreover, they make the strengthening process a money saving opportunity
while raising your property value minus raising your property taxes.
"Climate change and water scarcity threaten India's economy, one of the fastest growing in the world."
I
researched recently that the country has 16 percent of the world's
population, but only four percent of its water resources - how can we
make this sustainable?"

"In India, buildings are responsible for
4.9% of total GHG, If per capita water availability is any indication,
'water stress' is just beginning to show in India. Beside energy the
second most critical issue concerning the building sector, governments,
consumers and environmentalists today is possibly water. Infact, water
use in buildings accounts for almost 20 per cent of the total water use,
which is significant. Hence the Indian construction industry needs to
consider where and how they can protect the vibrant Indian economy. In
particular, do we need to consider new green technologies?

Buildings in India are prone to many health problems such as:-
•Molds,
•Extreme hot condition
•Waste of energy

The impact is often high electricity bills
and occupant's complaining of health problems due to internal
environmental quality. "
Children, elderly people, and people with
breathing problems, allergies, and lung diseases are particularly
susceptible to disease-causing biological agents in the indoor air.

Buildings in India are prone to many problems. Research provides the following interesting such as:-
•The
World Health Organisation estimates that up to 30% of new and remodeled
buildings worldwide may be subject to excessive complaints related to
indoor air quality.
•Air conditioning systems in commercial buildings consume about
60-65\% of the total energy as compared to various other end uses.

Sustainable buildings can provide:
•Improved learning by students
• greater productivity in workers
• Faster healing by patients.
• Have Higher Market Value

Both residential and commercial
buildings retain a high resale value if they include sustainable design
components. The value to prospective buyers comes from knowing their
utility and maintenance costs will be lower in green buildings that
outperform non-green buildings. Occupancy levels are consistently
higher, and vacancy rates lower, in sustainable office buildings.

Understandably,
it is these measurable benefits, rather than a general sense of
well-being, energy conservation resulting in saving money and improved
internal environmental quality for better living and good for the
environment these can be achieved by implementing green technology in
our buildings. India still to capitalize the benefits of green
technology as other countries are already using it in their buildings
for instance USA, Australia.

On the financial side, going green
will save everyone tons of money. The price of electricity will keep
going up as oil supplies shrink. As a hedge against rising electric
bills it would be wise to invest in green technology today. Plus an
additional benefit will be cleaner air. There are still coal plants
around and despite the advancements in technology they remain a
pollution factor today. Green technology in the form of solar power
could result in a tremendous reduction in the need for coal power plants

Energy
saving lightbulbs are a great example of green technology that can be
installed in every house in the world, easily. The aim of green
technology is to make peoples' lives better without compromising on
quality of life.

Examples of green technology subject areas

Energy

Perhaps the most urgent issue for green technology, this includes
the development of alternative fuels, new means of generating energy and
energy efficiency.
Green building

Green building encompasses everything from the choice of building materials to where a building is located.
Environmentally preferred purchasing

This government innovation involves the search for products whose
contents and methods of production have the smallest possible impact on
the environment, and mandates that these be the preferred products for
government purchasing.
Green chemistry

The invention, design and application of chemical products and
processes to reduce or to eliminate the use and generation of hazardous
substances.

Time has come to gain from the immense possibilities
of Green technologies which will ultimately provide solutions to the
entire problem we discussed above.
Sustainable buildings operate from seven simple principles

Sustainable building will:
1.Harvest all their own water and energy needs on site.
2.Be adapted specifically to site and climate and evolve as conditions change.
3.Operate pollution-free and generate no wastes that aren't useful
for some other process in the building or immediate environment.
4.Promote the health and well-being of all inhabitants, as a healthy ecosystem does.
5.Be comprised of integrated systems that maximise efficiency and comfort.
6.Improve the health and diversity of the local ecosystem rather than degrade it.
7.Be beautiful and inspire us to dream.

Benefits of Green Building
Environmental benefits
•Reduce the impacts of natural resource consumption
Economic benefits
•Improve the bottom line
Health and safety benefits
•Enhance occupants comfort and health
Community benefits
•Minimize strain on local infrastructures and improve quality of life
We
talked about water scarcity which is not only a concern for India but
for entire world. So what are we doing for that? The answer is we can
certainly look for ways to save water and make optimum utilization of
what we have right now. The reason why there is hype for green
technology is it's always emphasizes on creating resources and minimum
wastage of energy.

If we can reduce the water consumption in the
building construction then it can definitely be used in other activities
and it should be collective effort.

India has always played a
significant role in the global arena. Whether it's growing economy,
world's largest democracy and seriousness about environment. Then it is
imperative that world should also recognise India's effort for
sustainable living. India needs to consolidate its stand on promoting
green technologies. And for that government can provide financial
assistance to people or organisations to encourage and create awareness
about green technologies. India is already doing its bit to save water
and other environment friendly measures. Ministry of environment is also
seeking assistance from Indian corporate sector to come up with
innovative ideas to save the environment. I think we are on the right
track and we just need to create more awareness about the biggest threat
the world is facing now which is global warming. As we say there is
never a wrong time for the right thing so we can certainly give back
something to our mother earth.
