How to Freestyle Rap using Slant Rhymes

Beginning freestyle rappers use what’s known as Perfect Rhyming. Perfect rhyming is when two words rhyme exactly alike. The words “Rock” and “Sock” are perfect rhymes. The words “Table” and “Cable” are perfect rhymes. Notice how they have almost the exact same spelling and sound when placed together.

Look at this verse from an average freestyle rapper. Notice the “Perfect” rhymes:

“I will break your bones/ Like getting hit with sharp stones/

Then I’ll use my phone/ to distort your voice tone/”

The above bars use simplistic perfect rhymes. They are highly predictable and won’t catch the ears of your listeners.

Compare the “Perfect Rhymes” above to Eminem’s rhymes on “Till I Collapse”:

“And it’s absurd how people hang on every word.
I’ll probably never get the props I feel I ever deserve
But I’ll never be served my spot is forever reserved
If I ever leave earth that would be the death of me first.
Cause in my heart of hearts I know nothing could ever be worse.
That’s why I’m clever when I put together every verse”

Elite freestyle rappers use what’s known as Like-Sounding-Words. Unlike Perfect Rhymes which rely on almost identical words, Like-Sounding-Words create rhymes based on vowel sounds.

While none of Eminem’s words rhyme perfectly, they still flow and sound like Perfect Rhymes. This is due to Eminem using similar vowel sounds in each of his rhymes. Using vowel sounds is the secret to rhyming difficult and multiple syllable words. This technnique prevents you from sounding elementary and average.

Exercise: Pick any word. Write it down. Break down the vowel sounds. Find five “Like-Sounding-Words” to rhyme with based on vowel sound. Memorize these words and use them the next time you freestyle.

Example: I’ll use the word “Matrix”. Matrix by itself has no “Perfect Rhymes” so I’m limited to only “Like-Sounding-Words”. By listening the vowel sounds in matrix, I can create “Like-Sounding-Words” to freestyle with.

-Matrix [mey-triks] – Basic, Complacent, Space Ship, Make-Shift, Adjacent

Rhyming with Like-Sounding-Words makes you a more impressive freestyle rapper. Using them instead of Perfect Rhymes expands your rhyming vocabulary. Utilize this knowledge to your advantage. Practice the above exercise to become a better freestyle rapper.

How to Freestyle Rap Longer

Building your freestyle rapping skills one day at a time is the surest path to SUCCESS. Learning any skill takes a consistent amount of effort and dedication. I want to provide you with four daily habits that when used consistently will literally double your freestyle rapping skills.

Habit #1 – Daily Tongue Twisters -

A tongue twister is a collection of words or phrases that are difficult to pronounce quickly. You may have had experience with these in elementary school.

Find a tongue twister that works for you. It could be one you’ve always known or something you find on the internet. The key is to make sure it is tough for you to say.

Tongue twisters will develop your ability to spit out complex rhyme schemes and strengthen your freestyle rapping capability.

Example: “Honestly, in all honesty, being honest is astonishingly honoring.”

Try to say the above tongue twister. Say it slowly at first. Understand how the words fit together and try to say it THREE times in a row FAST.

Keep consistent with your tongues twisters. Memorize one until mastery. No need to mess around with several tongue twisters at once. They are best used right before you’re about to perform or freestyle. I’ve found that just saying your tongue twister throughout the day will make your delivery more advanced as a freestyle rapper.

Habit #2 – Freestyle Daily –

This is the MOST important habit. How can you become a better freestyle rapper without flowing? The bulk of your improvement will come from raw freestyling. Find a beat you like or use an instrumental from your favorite rap song to freestyle over. You can even freestyle acapella! No glitz, glamour or glorification.

Keep your daily freestyle to a minimum of five minutes. This will be difficult at first, but as you get the hang of it, your rhymes will stretch. Freestyle in the shower, on your commute to work, at lunch time, right before bed or in the middle of the day. Find a time that works for you and stick to that time each day.

Example: “Dropping rhymes while I should be writing/ Typing freestyles instead of re-reading and revising/ Unleashing word power and the sensations exciting/ Cuz I’m Creating content faster than lightning/”

Use your surroundings and current events as fuel for material. Sticking to this habit alone will make you a better freestyle rapper.

Habit #3 – Learn One New Word a Day –

Learning one new word a day comes with several benefits. You will not only become a more rounded intelligent person, but your freestyle rapping skills will increase as a result. Becoming an elite freestyle rapper hinges on your ability to showcase your unique persona. Being able to learn and integrate a new word will directly affect your overall quality as a freestyle rapper.

If you learn one new word a day, in six weeks, you’ll have forty-two new words in your arsenal! There are plenty of resources to help develop your vocabulary. Subscribe to an online newsletter that sends you one new word a day via email. Or do it the old fashion way and look up words in the dictionary.

Make sure your new word has a very “rhymable” quality. Some of the more academic words tend to be very rigid when it comes to rhyming. Stick to your daily resource and record your new words in a notebook or the notepad in your cell phone.

Example: Acclimate [AK-luh-mayt] - To get used to a new climate, environment, or situation.

Words that rhyme with Acclimate: Saturate, Detonate, Bad Escape, Outer Space, Evacuate.

Take your new word along with its rhyming words and integrate them into your freestyle rap. This habit alone will easily take you to the next level!

Habit #4 – Memorize Rap Lyrics –

Listening to rap lyrics teaches you how to subconsciously form rhymes like the pros. Being able to follow along with your favorite rap artists is also a huge boost to your confidence.

Learn a small bit from your favorite verse each day. Make sure to do this consistently. The cool thing about memorizing rap lyrics is that it’s a catch all for the other daily habits. If your verse is complex enough, you can use it as a tongue twister. You can even rhyme along with the track and freestyle over the beat. And if you get lucky, there may even be an unusual word you can look up and use it as your word of the day.

Caveat: Stick to the minimum requirement for each of these habits. Don’t try to memorize the entire dictionary or learn an entire rap song over night. You will burn out quicker than a cigarette on a rainy evening.

Be sure to stick with each of these habits daily. When combined they will have a compound effect that will increase your skills incredibly! It was John Wooden, arguably the greatest collegiate basketball coach of all time that said “When you improve a little bit each day, eventually big things will happen.”

Most common problems with Beginning Freestyle Rappers -

Put attitude in your voice. Sounding monotone or bored is the quickest way to lose fans or followers. Lil Wayne's swagger shines through when he freestyles and you can hear that his delivery is packed with confidence. Don't overdo it, but put a little bit of swagger in your rhymes and believe that your voice deserves to be heard.

First figure out what you want to rhyme with.

Let's say your rhyming word was "Laptop"

You want to break the word "Latop" into syllables.

"Lap-Top" listen to each syllable and practice matching the syllables to different words in your rhyming vocabulary.

Lap-Top: Flat-Top, Back-Drop, Slap-Shot

Now integrate your Multi-Syllable Rhyming words into your freestyle verses --

"Crunching rhymes into this Lap-Top/
My style is smoother than 90s Flat-Tops/
It would stand out even in a Back-Drop/
Cuz my flow hits harder than a Slap-Shot/"

Keep your head in a rhyming dictionary and a regular dictionary to expand the number of words in your arsenal. That along with plain old practice will take your Multi-Syllable Rhyming to the next level!!

Like him or not, Drake is one of the HOTTEST rappers right now. He has come from his humble acting days on Degrassi to the top of hip hop charts this side of the States. Drake is known for his clever wordplay, hard hitting two word punchlines and soothing voice on a track.

Believe it or not, it is possible to learn How to Freestyle Rap just like Drake. Imagine being able to churn out wicked lines and rhymes at will. This post will teach exactly how to do that and put you on the highway to Freestyling just like Drake.

Clever Wordplay

Wordplay is when a Freestyle Rapper plays with the meaning of a word for artistic effect. Drake is widely known for his wordplay skills.

"Disguise yourself, go buy a costume/
I am making stocks work, while you working stock rooms/"

"I flow far from mediocre
and if we talking cards I will fold them with the poker
You and your whole crew are like a deck of 54's
so it's obvious ya'll gonna steady be rollin with some jokers"

Wordplay is created when you can find and exploit Double or Triple meanings in your words.

The easiest way to do that is to look up ‘Homophones’.

A ‘Homophones’ is when two words sound the same, but have a different meaning or spelling:

You want to be able to create lines that play off of the double meanings of these words just like Drake does.

Example - Profit (To make money) Prophet (To see the future)
Watch me turn this single word into a Freestyle Line with Clever Wordplay.

“I’m the Messiah of money, cuz all I do is Prophet (Profit)”

Look up common Homophones and weave them into your Freestyle Raps to flow just like Drake!

Two-Word Punchlines

Drake's punchlines are some of the hottest in the game right now! Rappers everywhere are quoting him in interviews, memorizing his song lyrics and trying to develop skills just like him. The trick to Drake's Freestyle Rapping skills are his Two-Word Punchlines.

"It's what you all been waitin for. Ain't it?
Your weekly entertainment.
For me to get a hold of this beat, go ahead and claim it.
I'm bout to paint a picture, you n*ggas go ahead and frame it"

"That's the reason Why he Lookin Hard.
Cuz I done snatched the Chips Ahoy out his Cookie Jar
He just mad cuz his girl At the house, with her Tongue sticking out -
Like a Michael Jordan Rookie Card"

You start your line...wait a second to build the suspense...and then finish it off with a related term of no more than two words.

Use a rhyming dictionary to help you use more original and unique rhymes. Being able to use Two-Word punchlines will have you sounding so much like Drake it's not even funny.

Drake's DIRTY Secret...

Do you know the secret to Drake's success?

It's not his rhyming capability.
It's not his rapping skills.

It's his singing voice.

Drake isn't the best singer, but he's able to create solid hooks and create a loyal following by the way he uses his voice in his raps. I believe the future to becoming a rap artist is to develop your Rapping AND Singing skills.

Practice singing along with your favorite artists and develop your own unique sound. You might not be able to hit a full vocal range, but I can guarantee your skills as a rapper will dramatically improve.

6) Build yourself up – Create a brand around your own freestyle

rapping. Freestyle in local talent shows and open mics. If you can build

your own name up as a freestyle rapper, people will be dying to join

you.

7) Ask a friend – Sometimes what you’re looking for is right under

your nose. Tackle the challenge of freestyle rapping with one of your

friends.

8) Expand your territory - Look at what organization you’re involved

in. Learn how to use their resources as a stage to promote freestyle

rap.

9) Use The Internet – Become a member of a few freestyle rapping

forums, music sharing sites and artist pages for rappers. Collaborate with people in your area.

10) Host an event for freestyle rappers – Post bulletins around

town or create “Events” via social networks. Gather freestyle rappers

together and have a huge cypher. Network with rappers you connect

with the most.

Tips:

- Don’t choose everyone. Beware of people with bad intentions. Be

very selective in who you pick to join your freestyle rapping crew.

Creating a Freestyle Rapping Crew
The BIGGEST reason most people will never succeed in freestyle rapping is they aren't around enough rappers.

A group of freestyle rappers teaches you what it takes to become successful and will constantly challenge you to perform at your best. I didn't start making progress until I was around other artists who were good at freestyle rapping.

Being around others who are on the same path is the quickest way to become successful. When you have someone there to constantly critique and tweak what you do, your skills improve ten-fold.

I have provided tips and tricks to help you build an awesome freestyle rapping crew:

1) Teach a novice rapper how to freestyle -- The quickest way to learn anything is to teach it. If you can successfully teach somebody how to freestyle rap, you'll have an almost instant addition to your team.

2) Get involved with your local music scene- You want to be around places where other artists will be. Become a student of these local artists and offer to help them setup etc, If you lend a hand they will be willing to listen to your flow.

3) Create a freestyle rapping club at your college, university or high school -- If you can create a hub for freestyle rappers to hang out around, they'll flock to you. It's like attracting bees with honey.

4) Freestyle in public -- Pick an area with the most people walking by. Get someone to beatbox for your freestyle. You don't need everyone to feel you, just people who have an interest in hip hop.

5) Join an established crew -- Keep your interactions punchy and memorable. Focus on building relationships and then let them preview your freestyle.

How to Create Internal Rhymes in your Freestyle Raps

Grab a thesaurus.

Take apart your freestyle raps by replacing average words with complex words that rhyme.

Place each of the complex rhymes strategically within your verse, making internal rhymes.

Example –

“I went to the store

I saw a man who was poor

I found a penny on the floor

And bought him a smore”

Okay, the above bars were WEAK SAUCE, if you disagree… stop reading my blog now. I hate you. Just kidding.

Watch what Internal Rhyming can do to this seemingly simple verse –

“I rode my board to the store

My eyes were sore, for they had absorbed

A man who was poor aching from his core

So I found a quarter on the floor and scored him a smore”

See the difference?? That’s the power of internal rhyming.

Once you get used to writing down and using internal rhymes, you can begin to integrate them effortlessly into your freestyles.

Here’s a verse for you take apart –

“I was at the beach playing in the sand

The tide rolled in and forced me to stand

I looked at my little brother and grabbed his hand

We walked from the beach onto dry land”

Ready……. Go!!!

What did you come up with?

Here’s what I created –

“My plan was to be at the beach in the sand

The damn tide rolled in so I had to stand

I jammed to my brother and grabbed his hand

We ran our cans from the beach to dry land”

Freestyling over beats is the quickest way to enhance your freestyle. You will not only learn how to rap in a rhythm, but you can practice with different rapping styles over each different beat.

Your rhymes will start to get really tired if you continuously freestyle acapella. An advanced freestyle rapper knows how to freestyle rap acapella AND over hot beats.

Finding beats can be difficult. I’ve highlighted the best places to find beats and a few tips on how to create your own.

Learn How To Beatbox

Beatboxing is the art of vocal percussion. It involves creating rhythm, drum beats and musical sounds with your mouth. Beatboxing is directly connected to hip hop. Look up web cyphers and old freestyle videos from your favorite artists. Most of them use beatboxing as a primary instrument to freestyle over. In my personal opinion, freestyle rapping sounds best over beatboxing.

Watch tutorials of beatboxing videos. Search for “How to beatbox” in your favorite search engine and soak up every video.

Then watch videos of “The Human Beatbox” and “The Greatest Beatbox Ever” get a picture in your mind of what a solid beatbox looks like.

Practice with your with your friends and get used to freestyling over vocal percussions. You freestyles will not only sound crisper, but you’ll be more connected with the culture of hip-hop.

Learn How to Tap Pencils to Make Pencil Beats

A pencil beat is when you place a pencil in your hand and tap it in rhythms over a solid surface. It’s almost like playing a drum, but your drumsticks are pencils. Freestyle rapping sounds awesome over a pencil beat. And unlike beatboxing, pencil beats free up your mouth, so you’re able to freestyle over your own pencil beats!!

Watch and read tutorials on Pencil Tapping beats. Here are a few basic tips:

Hold your pencil between your index finger and thumb.

Practice hitting the pencil on a hard surface from different angles.

Pound your palm on the hard surface for a solid baseline.

Use two pencils if you can handle the challenge.

Grind out beats to your heart’s content.

That’s it! Pencil beats are awesome. Learn how to integrate pencil beats with beatboxing and you’ll wow crowds with your versatility as a freestyle rapper.

How to Freestyle Rap BETTER

Let’s face it. If you’re a new freestyle rapper you will eventually run out of things to rap about. Even seasoned freestyle rappers hit the occasional freestyle block. It’s nothing to worry about, but it will definitely affect your flowing sessions.. Provided are several ideas for freestyle topics to get your creative juices flowing...

1) Rap about people you love. Do you have a big brother you look up to? Is there a friend who has always been there for you? Start freestyling about what they mean to you. Pull out emotions and imagery.

2) Rap about a cause you would fight for. Does poverty bother you? Could you get real about the economy? What about the current situation in Japan? Flowing about causes that mean something to you will bring your bars to life.

3) Rap about having nothing to rap about. Dropping flows about having nothing to rap about is pretty funny. Talk about how you couldn’t rap to save a dying whale in the ocean. Rap about your mind being empty. Run with it.

4) Rap about imaginary situations. Just start freestyling about hanging out with your friends. Lead the story to wherever you please. Don’t limit your imagination. The scenarios you will come up with will have you laughing for days.

5) Rap about the garbage other people rap about. It personally angers me to see how today’s hip hop is filled with meaningless dirt. Every song talks about murdering somebody, having sex like a nymphomaniac and wearing expensive jewelry. Drop some truths bombs on them! And if your flow is hot enough, be sure to send me a copy ;)

6) Rap about your city. For some people who live in a small town like me, this is borderline impossible, but do it anyways. Talk about the streets of your city. Flow about different memories you’ve made. Go into the old lady you pissed off as a kid or the liquor store you used to buy dirty magazines from..

7) Rap about your how good you are. This is horrible, but everyone does it anyways. Talk about how nobody could catch you lyrically. Focus on using similes and metaphors to help compare you to the greats. Don’t go overboard here, but do it for fun!

8) Rap about your surroundings. Is there a really annoying person in your crew? Does the air smell funny? Is somebody texting on their phone? Rapping about your surroundings will give you fresh material.

9) Rap about your biography. Drop lines about your life story. It doesn’t have to be deep, just make it relevant to your life. Flow about your first crush or you first heartbreak. Rap about how your family came to this country or the struggles you’ve overcome. Freestyling about your life brings a unique element to your lines.

10) Rap about current events. Keep an eye on the latest headlines or celebrity gossip. I guarantee if you can spin a rhyme about breaking news as it happens, you’ll have people on the edge of their seat. Use a funny headline as your punchline. Compare things around you to unusual articles you find.

Still having trouble with topic ideas? Here is a powerful exercise to get you started.

Exercise:

Word Association – Have a friend call out a word. It can be ANY word. Freestyle about whatever word your friend gives you until you run out of rhymes or go off topic. This freestyle exercise will teach you how to rap on topic and strengthen your muscles for creating relevant bars.

Try these words out for ‘Word Association’ – Salad, Ugly Cars, Weight Room, College and Poke Mon….

Example: “Poke Mon”

“Put your head down, You shell-shocked like a turtle/ I just soaked your crew with my water gun like a squirtle/ Turned around and threw my Poke Ball in a circle/ Fell on the water and tripped into my own whirlpool”

The above bars may have sucked, but that’s freestyle. Loosen up and have fun along the way.

The possibilities are endless with Word Association. Run with it. Remember that once you run out of rhymes or go off topic… you’re done!

Creating a Freestyle Rapping Crew

The BIGGEST reason most people will never succeed in freestyle rapping is they aren't around enough rappers.

A group of freestyle rappers teaches you what it takes to become successful and will constantly challenge you to perform at your best. I didn't start making progress until I was around other artists who were good at freestyle rapping.

Being around others who are on the same path is the quickest way to become successful. When you have someone there to constantly critique and tweak what you do, your skills improve ten-fold.

I have provided tips and tricks to help you build an awesome freestyle rapping crew:

1) Teach a novice rapper how to freestyle – The quickest way to learn anything is to teach it. If you can successfully teach somebody how to freestyle rap, you’ll have an almost instant addition to your team.

2) Get involved with your local music scene- You want to be around places where other artists will be. Become a student of these local artists and offer to help them setup etc, If you lend a hand they will be willing to listen to your flow.

3) Create a freestyle rapping club at your college, university or high school – If you can create a hub for freestyle rappers to hang out around, they’ll flock to you. It’s like attracting bees with honey.

Freestyle rapping begins in the mind before it starts anywhere else. Being able to prepare your mind for freestyle rap will give you clarity and set you up to dominate on the mic. Read the following mindsets. Learn how to use them.. If you have to, write them down. These mindsets will become pillars for your freestyle rap skills.

-Freestyle Rapping is learnable – The ability to freestyle rap isn’t something you’re born with. Putting together rhymes is something that takes time, but is easy to get the hang of. Learning how to express yourself at first is difficult, but through experience, you will become better at it. Every freestyle rapper had to practice to get where they are today. Just like any skill freestyle rapping is learnable and it is possible to become extremely good by practicing. Don’t let your inexperience hold you back!

-Learn Freestyle Rapping in chunks - Trying to tackle freestyle rap all at once will overwhelm you. Your skillset as a freestyle rapper should be learned in parts. Think about it like basketball. You learn how to handle the ball, shoot 3-pointers and setup offensive schemes separately. Freestyle rap should be learned like anything else, one chunk at a time. Spend a significant amount of time on just internal rhyming before you play around with metaphors. Learning Freestyle in chunks will narrow your focus, making you a higher caliber freestyle rapper.

-Freestyle rapping is hit or miss- Sometimes you’re on fire, connecting ideas and rhymes seamlessly with ease. Other times you’re horrible, spitting out word vomit and it’s embarrassing. Don’t let the difficulty of freestyle rap intimidate you. As you perfect the craft and practice your skillset, the amount at which you slip up will decrease significantly.

1) Beware of the drunk freestyle!!!! You may think you sound good. Odds are you don't. Don't Drink & Rhyme.

2) Flow blindfolded. Just do it! Covering your eyes forces you to focus... you'll thank me later.

3) Rap about your city. All the best rappers give a shoutout to their hometown....

4) Learn freestyle rapping in chunks. Trying to tackle it all at once will overwhelm you.

5) Writing poetry improves your ability to freestyle rap. Get a Pen, a pad and write down what's on your mind

6) Work on the way you move while you rap. Nobody likes a dead fish and you definitely don't want to look like a dancing monkey.

7) Freestyle Rap is a skill. Take time to learn the technical aspects of rhyme structure, timing, and delivery

8) Rhyming Dictionary + Thesauras + Rap Music + Your brain = Your rhyming successories.

9) The reason why your phone has a notepad: To put your best freestyle lines in. Should you ever decide to drop a track, it will come in handy

10) We all do it, but beware of rhyming about how 'you're the greatest', You're not. Shut the f-ck up.

What's up everyone?? I hope you all are doing awesome and handling business......

I will be writing a book on Freestyle Rapping for the next few weeks. The book is going to be completely free and it's going to destroy your brain with truth bombs left and right.... Keep your eyes glued to the blog and continue reading through back posts to satisfy your hunger....

With that being said, I will be posting less for the month of June.... this isn't due to my laziness though, it's due to finals coming up for school and me breaking it down in the up and coming "Freestyle Rap Guide" book....

So Let me know what posts you do WANT to see for this month.... I'll be taking requests and putting out 3-4 killer posts every week. Is there a rapper you want me to analyze?? Is there a video you want me to shout out? Any requests for different areas of success psychology?

The third component of becoming a freestyle rapper is finding your style. Are you a punchline rapper like Lil Wayne?? Do you focus on the technical aspect of rapping like Eminem?? What speed do you freestyle at?

Your style is found through practice and molding yourself. Beginning freestyle rappers are going to have a difficult time finding their freestyle identity at first. You'll start out with sub-par lines and garbage rhythm, but by freestyle rapping in front of others, over beats and recordings, you will start to define yourself.

Ask your peers who you freestyle like. What kind of freestyle rapper do they see you becoming?? Take their advice with a grain of salt, but use it to move your forward. Once you have a solid picture of your style....Embrace it. Use it to your advantage and perfect exactly what that means to you.

What are you focusing on as a rapper? What do you notice in other rappers?? Do laid-back rappers having a good time excite you? Does a rapper who pulls out complex rhymes pump you up? Asking these questions gives you a solid picture of what you can become.

Becoming a successful freestyle rapper is not possible without finding your freestyling-style. Find it out. Practice saying words to a rhythm, learn basic rhyming and you'll be on your way to becoming a freestyle rapper.
