Moscow : A Russian military plane crashed in annexed Crimea, killing six crew and 23 passengers on board, Russian news agencies reported in the early hours of Wednesday, citing the country’s Defence Ministry.

The An-26 military transport plane was carrying out a scheduled flight over the Crimean peninsula, which Russia illegally annexed from Ukraine in 2014, the reports said. The military lost contact with the plane around 6 pm on Tuesday.

Russian news agency Interfax quoted the Defence Ministry as saying that they believe the crash was caused by a technical malfunction and that there was no “damaging interference” with the plane.

The plane crashed into a cliff, sources at the site of the crash told state news agencies Tass and RIA Novosti.

The An-26 is a Soviet-designed military transport turboprop aircraft.

New Delhi : Price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), or jet fuel, was more than doubled to a record Rs 2.07 lakh per kilolitre on Wednesday, mirroring the surge in global oil prices last month, but for domestic airlines, the increase would only be 8.5 per cent.

Domestic airlines will pay half of what other carriers such as non-scheduled, adhoc and charter would pay. For them the prices have gone up by Rs 110,703.08 per kl, or 114.5 per cent, to Rs 207,341.22 per kl.

Jet fuel prices were deregulated more than two decades back, and since then, the rates are aligned with benchmark international prices, as per a written understanding with the airlines.

But since the Middle East war induced surge in global energy prices warranted a steepest increase ever to be made in the ATF prices, the government and state-owned oil companies decided to adopt a calibrated approach, industry sources said.

While foreign airlines and other carriers would pay market rates, prices for domestic airlines have been moderated, they said.

Alongside, commercial LPG rates were raised by Rs 195.50 per cylinder, mirroring the surge in global oil prices linked to the widening West Asia conflict.

This is the first time ever that the ATF price has crossed Rs 2 lakh per kl mark. The previous peak was in 2022 when rates hike Rs 1.1 lakh per kl after oil prices surged after Russia invaded Ukraine.

This is the second monthly increase in rates. Prices on March 1 were hiked by 5.7 per cent (Rs 5244.75 per kl).

The rising prices will further strain airlines which are already burning more fuel in taking longer routes for flying to western destinations because of closure of airspace due to the war. Fuel makes up for around 40 per cent of an airline’s operating cost.

Alongside, rates of commercial LPG - one that is used by hotels and restaurants - were hiked by Rs 195.50 per 19-kg cylinder.

A 19-kg commercial LPG now costs Rs 2,078.50 in Delhi.

Rates were last increased by Rs 114.5 per 19-kg cylinder on March 1.

Domestic cooking gas LPG rates, which were last hiked by Rs 60 per 14.2-kg cylinder on March 7, remain unchanged. It costs Rs 913 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi.

State-owned Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum revise ATF and LPG prices on the first day of every month based on international benchmarks and the exchange rate.

Global oil prices have shot up by almost 50 per cent after the war in West Asia disrupted energy supply chains.

Petrol and diesel prices continue to remain frozen after a Rs 2 per-litre reduction in March last year; petrol currently costs Rs 94.72 per litre in Delhi and diesel Rs 87.62.

Explaining the increase, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in a post on X said, “ATF prices in India were deregulated in 2001 and are revised on a monthly basis based on a formula of international benchmarks.”

Due to the closure of Strait of Hormuz and extraordinary situation in global energy markets, the price of ATF for domestic markets was expected to increase by more than 100 per cent on April 1, it said.

“In order to insulate the domestic travel costs from the substantial increase in international prices, PSU Oil Marketing Companies of the Ministry of Petroleum, in consultation with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, have passed only a partial and staggered increase of 25 per cent (only Rs 15/litre) to the airlines. Foreign routes will pay for the full increase in ATF prices consistent with what they pay in other parts of the world.”

: Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty tumbled in early trade on Monday as the ongoing war in West Asia continue to rattle markets globally, driving crude oil prices higher.

Unabated foreign fund outflows also added to the weakness in domestic equities.

The 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled 1,191.24 points to 72,391.98 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty slumped 349.45 points to 22,470.15.

From the 30-Sensex firms, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank were among the biggest laggards.

Bharat Electronics, Reliance Industries, Power Grid, Tata Consultancy Services and Hindustan Unilever were the gainers.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, jumped 2.32 per cent lower to USD 115.3 per barrel.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s benchmark Kospi and Japan’s Nikkei 225 index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index were quoting sharply lower, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite index traded in positive territory.

The US market ended significantly lower on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite index tanked 2.15 per cent, while Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.73 per cent and S&P 500 declined by 1.67 per cent.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 4,367.30 crore on Friday, according to exchange data. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), however, bought stocks worth Rs 3,566.15 crore.

Foreign investors have pulled out Rs 1.14 lakh crore (about USD 12.3 billion) from domestic equities in March, making it the worst monthly outflow, weighed down by escalating tensions in West Asia, a weakening rupee and concerns over the impact of elevated crude oil prices on India’s growth.

“The pressure is largely external, as escalating geopolitical tensions and surging crude oil prices continue to dominate investor sentiment. Asian markets have opened with significant cuts, with South Korea’s Kospi and Japan’s Nikkei declining sharply.

“The broad-based weakness comes as the Middle East conflict enters its fifth week, with fresh escalation after Yemen’s Houthis reportedly launched missile strikes on Israel. This marks a widening of the conflict footprint and has heightened fears of prolonged instability in the region,” Hariprasad K, Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth, said.

On Friday, the Sensex tanked 1,690.23 points or 2.25 per cent to settle at 73,583.22. The Nifty dropped 486.85 points or 2.09 per cent to end at 22,819.60.

Agra Shock: Missing 8-Year-Old Girl Found Dead in Flour Container, Accused on the Run

Agra : An eight-year-old girl, who had gone missing earlier this week, was found dead inside a flour container in a rented room in Agra, police said on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Ali Abbas said the girl went missing in the Tajganj area's Siddhant Nagar locality around 4 pm on March 24.

Her family alerted the police, following which an extensive search operation was launched.

"Eight teams were deployed to trace the child, and CCTV footage from the surrounding areas was scanned. The girl was seen entering the locality in one camera, but did not appear in any subsequent footage," he said.

Acting on suspicion, police broke open the lock of a room rented by a man identified as Sunil, who lived in the same house as the victim. During the search, the girl's body was recovered from a flour container inside the room, the officer said.

The accused is absconding and multiple police teams have been formed to trace him, officials added.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Angry locals staged protests and demanded strict action against the accused.

According to a neighbour, Sunil had been living as a tenant in the same house for about a year and also worked at the family's shoe factory.

She claimed that he had initially joined in the search for the missing girl but later locked his room and fled, raising suspicion.

Bengaluru : An Air Canada Express regional jet collided with a ground vehicle upon landing at New York’s LaGuardia airport on Monday evening, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24, in an incident that closed the airport.

The CRJ-900 plane, which was coming from Montreal, struck the vehicle at a speed of about 24 miles per hour (39 kph), Flightradar24 said. The jet was operated by Jazz Aviation, Air Canada’s regional partner.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop for all planes at the airport until 0530 GMT, according to a notice from the regulator.

The FAA notice showed that the reason for the halt at the airport was an emergency and there was a high probability of an extension, without specifying any details.

LaGuardia’s website showed arriving planes had been diverted to other airports or returned to their point of origin.

In a separate notice to airmen, the FAA said that the airport could be shut until 1800 GMT.

Unverified footage on social media showed damage to the nose of the plane, as it tilted upward. Reuters could not immediately verify the footage.

The New York Fire Department in a statement said that it was responding to a reported incident involving a plane and a vehicle on the runway at LaGuardia airport, but did not provide further details.

Air Canada and the FAA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Mumbai : Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty dropped sharply in early trade on Monday as the Middle East conflict entered its fourth week driving crude oil prices higher.

A massive bearish trend in global equity markets and relentless foreign fund outflows also made investors jittery.

The 30-share BSE Sensex dived 1,555.62 points, or 2 per cent, to 72,977.34 during initial trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty tanked 479.95 points, or 2 per cent, to 22,634.55.

From the 30-Sensex firms, Tata Steel, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance, Bharat Electronics, Titan, and Adani Ports were among the biggest laggards.

HCL Tech emerged as the only winner.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, climbed 0.62 per cent to USD 112.9 per barrel.

In Asian markets, South Korea's benchmark Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index were trading sharply lower. Kospi dived nearly 6 per cent.

The US market ended significantly lower on Friday.

"The weakness reflects a significant deterioration in global risk sentiment, as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. Asian markets have opened deep in the red, with Japan's Nikkei declining nearly 4.6 per cent and South Korea's Kospi falling over 6 per cent, underscoring a broad-based risk-off move.

"The escalation in rhetoric between the United States and Iran, particularly around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, has heightened fears of potential supply disruptions in global energy markets," Hariprasad K, Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth, said.

Foreign Institutional Investors offloaded equities worth Rs 5,518.39 crore on Friday, according to exchange data. Domestic Institutional Investors, however, bought stocks worth Rs 5,706.23 crore. Foreign investors have pulled out Rs 88,180 crore (about USD 9.6 billion) from Indian equities so far this month.

NEW DELHI : Delhi woke up in a shroud of fog on Saturday with the minimum temperature dipping to 13 degrees Celsius, 3.5 degrees below the normal, as a chilly wind swept the city.

Delhi had on Friday registered a minimum temperature of 16 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, the air quality index (AQI) stood at 94 (satisfactory) at 8 am.

Owing to rain, air quality improved dramatically on Friday with an AQI of 93, marking the first 'satisfactory' air day in about five months in the national capital.

The last time the city recorded the same air quality was on October 9, 2025, when the AQI stood at 99.

Forecasts show moderate air and mild weather

The air quality is likely to be in the 'moderate' category from Saturday to March 23, according to the Air Quality Early Warning System.

According to CPCB standards, an AQI of 0-50 is considered 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor', and 401-500 'severe'.

Temperature dips, light rain forecast next week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the maximum temperature on Saturday is likely to settle at 27 degrees Celsius. No rain was recorded in the morning, unlike Friday, when the city received 7 mm of precipitation.

Delhi's average rainfall for the month is 16.2 mm, making it the wettest March since 2023, when the average stood at 50.4 mm.

According to forecasts, very light rain is expected to return to Delhi on Monday, with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning caused by an active western disturbance.

Coldest March day recorded at Safdarjung station

The Safdarjung station recorded a maximum temperature of 21.7 degrees Celsius, 9.6 degrees below normal, on Friday — the coldest March day since March 8, 2020, when the mercury dropped to 21.2 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature on Friday was 16 degrees Celsius, 0.5 degrees below normal.

Srinagar : The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Counter Intelligence Wing (CIK) has busted a highly sophisticated international cyber fraud racket by arresting seven persons here, officials said on Thursday.

The CIK-CID received several technical and credible inputs regarding the operation of “covert call centres” involved in fraudulent online activities targeting both foreign and local nationals.

“The CIK promptly constituted specialised teams comprising technical experts and field operatives and carried out systematic surveillance, digital intelligence gathering and verification across multiple locations, ultimately identifying a key operational hub in the Industrial Area, Rangreth, Srinagar,” they said.

Subsequently, a CIK team conducted a swift and well-coordinated raid in different parts of Srinagar city on Wednesday. During the raid, seven suspects were apprehended on the spot, and a large quantity of digital and communication equipment was seized. The seized devices include 13 mobile phones, nine laptops, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) systems, SIM cards and networking devices, and digital storage media, officials stated.

The seized material contains substantial incriminating evidence, clearly indicating a highly organised and technologically advanced criminal setup, they added.

According to initial investigations, the accused are part of a larger, well-coordinated cybercrime syndicate with connections extending beyond Jammu and Kashmir, officials stated.

“Part of the network was specifically designed to target victims in countries such as the USA, UK, and Canada, operate through international communication masking technologies, use psychological manipulation and impersonation tactics and launder money through modern digital and cryptocurrency channels,” officials informed.

Explaining the technical modus operandi, officials said the accused had established a covert, unregistered call centre infrastructure using VoIP-based systems, enabling them to generate international virtual numbers, mask their real location using server routing and spoofing techniques, and appear as legitimate service providers to unsuspecting victims.

International calls were being generated and routed through this call centre. A fake YahooMail.com website and Google advertisements were used to target victims, they said.

“Individuals across multiple countries were approached through organised call operations and online phishing ads. Once a victim clicked on the advertisement, a toll-free number appeared on their screen. This toll-free number was operated by the suspects, who then deceived innocent people into providing their banking and other personal details,” the officials said.

They added that funds were subsequently transferred into various accounts, including mule accounts and cryptocurrency wallets, primarily USDT.

“The illicit proceeds were further layered, converted, and withdrawn to conceal their origin. Victims were contacted and deceived into believing that their devices or bank accounts were compromised and they needed to pay for technical support or avoid penalties,” they said.

The fraudulently obtained money was then transferred through banking channels, digital wallets, and cryptocurrency, routed through mule accounts. It was subsequently converted into USDT and other cryptocurrencies, layered multiple times to evade detection and tracing. Notably, no cash transactions were involved, underscoring the fully digital and sophisticated nature of this crime, officials said.

The transactions carried so far seem to be running in several crores, they added.

A case has been registered under relevant laws, including charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy, and pertinent sections of the Information Technology Act.

“Follow-up raids are being conducted to apprehend additional suspects. Forensic analysis of seized devices is underway, and efforts are ongoing to identify victims and trace financial flows,” they said.

Investigations into the wider network, including national and international connections, are continuing, officials noted.

INDORE : Eight members of a family were killed when a fire broke out in a three-storey house after an explosion at an Electric Vehicle (EV) charging point outside the building in Indore early on Wednesday, officials said.

The deceased included two minor children and three women, they said.

Alarmed by the incident, the Madhya Pradesh government announced a detailed investigation into it by a committee of experts and the framing of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for EV charging.

The fire broke out in the house at Brajeshwari Annex Colony between 3.30 and 4.30 am, Assistant Commissioner of Police Kundan Mandloi told PTI.

A car was being charged outside the three-storey house. “There was an explosion at the charging point, and the fire in the car then engulfed the house,” Police Commissioner Santosh Kumar Singh said.

The house doors were fitted with electronic locks, making it difficult for the police to break in, he said.

Cooking gas cylinders inside the house also exploded, further intensifying the blaze, Singh said.

“Three persons trapped inside the house were rescued during the fire,” he said.

The bodies of eight persons killed in the fire were brought to a government hospital and the post-mortem was being conducted, Government Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria said.

The deceased have been identified as Tanmay (6), Rashi Sethia (12), Simran (30), Tinu (35), Suman Sethia (60), Vijay Sethia (65), Chhotu Sethia (22) and Manoj (65), he said.

“Two persons who were rescued during the fire were also brought to the hospital. However, after receiving first aid, they expressed the desire to be treated at another hospital and were discharged,” the official said.

State Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, who visited the scene, said, “This tragic incident is alarming because the house caught fire while an EV was being charged. We have asked the police and administration to conduct a detailed investigation by a committee of experts to prevent a recurrence of this incident.”

Along with the investigation into the incident, an SOP for EV charging would also be prepared, the minister said.

“In light of the rising crude oil prices due to current geopolitical developments, there is a growing interest in electric vehicles. In such a situation, the fire that occurred during the charging of an EV serves as a caution for us,” he said.

The minister also expressed concern over large buildings being constructed on small plots of land in the area, and the narrowing of the road for ambulances and other vehicles due to cars parked on both sides of the main road.

“I will discuss with office-bearers of the area’s resident associations to resolve these problems,” he added.
