Mumbai/Jaipur : Three men suspected to be involved in the firing at actor Tiger Shroff were detained in Rajasthan's Kota from a train coming from Mumbai on Monday, a police official said.

“The three suspects have been detained by Kota city police today at Kota station,” the official told PTI.

Three unidentified assailants opened fire at Shroff's car in Mumbai's Juhu area on Sunday evening. The actor escaped unhurt, while his driver and another person were injured.

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a viral social media post, but police have yet to verify its authenticity.

The Mumbai Police have registered a case of attempt to murder against three unidentified persons in connection with the firing. The case, initially registered by the Juhu police, has been transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch in view of the seriousness of the offence, officials said.

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered under Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder) and 3(5) (criminal acts done in furtherance of a common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Arms Act, an official said.

With the Crime Branch taking over the probe, investigators were probing all possible angles to the case, including potential links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Further investigation is underway, police said.

Bend (Oregon) : A 16-year-old opened fire at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher before he was shot by a person at the scene who pursued him into the school, authorities said.

Authorities found the suspect dead inside the school minutes after the shooting was first reported, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said.

The three children killed were aged 5, 8 and 11. Another child, 7, and a teacher, 54, were injured and taken to a hospital in critical condition, Krantz said.

The attacker, identified as a Bend resident, forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors, police said. He was shot and went down inside the school shortly after officers arrived, police spokesperson Sheila Miller said.

The first 911 call came just before 1 pm from a person in a vehicle outside Silver Rail Elementary who reported being shot at by someone with a long gun, Krantz said.

Further 911 calls came from inside the school, and officers arrived on scene within minutes, Miller said.

Police said they did not know if the attacker knew anyone at the school or whether he had attended.

The attacker used a pump-action shotgun that was purchased by his mother, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the shooting. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to publicly discuss the investigation.

The school in Bend, Oregon, which is more than 100 miles southeast of Portland, had 459 enrolled students as of last year, according to the Oregon Department of Education. The school serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

At a news conference on Thursday night, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said her heart was "absolutely broken" and thanked the civilian who pursued the shooter.

"To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life: Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well," she said.

Riyadh [Saudi Arabia], October 12 (ANI) : Saudi Arabia is running low on interceptor missiles needed to defend against further Houthi strikes, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing Saudi officials, as intensifying attacks by the Yemeni rebel groups have led to the death of 13 people following strikes on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on Saturday.

According to the WSJ, the escalating attacks have transformed parts of the Saudi capital, located more than 500 miles from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen, into a potential battle zone.

Debris from an intercepted ballistic missile has also hit a kindergarten and a medical clinic complex on Thursday.

On Sunday, Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree reiterated the group's warning to international airlines, businesses and travellers against operating flights to Saudi airports, claiming they were unsafe.

"We reiterate our warning to all international companies, experts, employees, workers, and travelers from all over the world to not operate flights to Saudi airports, as they are unsafe, except for the airports and airspace of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina," Saree said in a statement on Telegram.

The reported shortage of interceptor missiles comes amid a series of attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, including a strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10 that resulted in multiple fatalities and hundreds of injuries.

The death toll from the airport attack has risen to 13 after the Indian Embassy in Riyadh confirmed that an Indian national injured in the incident had died.

In an update on X, the Embassy said its officials had visited hospitals where Indian nationals injured in the attack were admitted. Three injured Indians remain in intensive care but are stable, two others are being treated in regular wards, while the remaining injured Indian nationals have been discharged.

Earlier, the Embassy had confirmed the death of the Indian national and expressed condolences to the bereaved family, assuring them of assistance in repatriating the mortal remains.

"Update regarding Riyadh Airport attack on October 10. It is learnt that one Indian national injured in the Riyadh attack has unfortunately lost his life today. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased. We are in touch with the family and will provide all support for ensuring the early repatriation of mortal remains," the Embassy said in a post on X.

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), in a statement issued on October 11, said the attack on King Khalid International Airport on October 10 had resulted in 12 fatalities, including four Saudi citizens and residents of several nationalities, and left 309 others injured.

According to GACA, the fatalities included two Bangladeshi nationals and one each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.

The latest incident follows earlier attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport and Abha International Airport on October 6 and 7, which GACA said had resulted in three deaths and 36 injuries.

Following the October 10 attack, airport operations were temporarily suspended while authorities assessed the damage and conducted safety inspections in coordination with relevant agencies.

Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy identified the two people killed as 21-year-old Jaquevion Jackson of Cordele and 23-year-old Macaleb Jackson of Hawkinsville, Georgia.

Some of the three dozen injured had gunshot wounds, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Chris Hosey said Sunday evening, but he could not provide a number.

“We’re still trying to work through that,” Hosey said during a news conference Sunday evening.

No arrests had been reported hours later, and authorities gave no possible motive for the gunfire.

The injured ranged in age from 14 to 51, and they were taken to several regional hospitals, Peavy said. Some were in critical condition Sunday evening and others were stable, he said.

More than 1,000 people attended the party

More than 1,000 people had gathered at the site, and more than 50 shots were fired in at least two locations about a block apart in Vienna, Peavy told WMAZ-TV. Vienna is a small, rural community about 130 miles (about 210 kilometers) south of Atlanta.

Deputies were near the scene when the shooting began, Peavy said, and after they arrived more gunfire erupted about a block away.

“We don’t know if it’s coming at us or someone else,” he said. “You just have to keep doing what you’re doing and hope you don’t get hit by gunfire.”

The incident took place over homecoming weekend for Dooly County High School.

One woman recalled rapid-fire shots and people running

Ashley Gee, 30, who lives in nearby Turner County and came to Vienna for the party, described to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution a constant barrage of gunfire, imitating the sound of rapid-fire shots.

“Like a machine gun,” she said. “One person ran, and everybody started running.”

The AJC said the party drew in people from other surrounding counties in south Georgia following a local high school football team’s victory at a homecoming game Friday night.

The shooting was not at a school-sponsored event, said Sherrod Willaford, superintendent of the Dooly County School System.

“We recognize that its impact may reach many of our students, families, and staff,” he said in a statement. Schools will open Monday, he said, but additional safety measures have been put in place. He did not specify what they are.

Peavy said the festivities began Friday night, and that it had “gone well” with “respect from the community” that evening as deputies patrolled the event.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Lydia Bullard declined to answer questions about the shooting, saying it was an ongoing investigation.

Nagoya : Archer Kumkum Mohod and wrestler Sujeet Kalkal have been named the inaugural recipients of the Jaspal Rana Award and Raja Randhir Singh Award respectively by the Indian Olympic Association for their outstanding performances at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

The awards have been instituted by the IOA to honour the best female and male sportspersons of the Games and commemorate the legacy of two stalwarts of Indian sport who died earlier this year.

Seventeen-year-old Mohod, making her Asian Games debut, won three medals, including two gold, and played a pivotal role in ending South Korea’s long-standing dominance in women’s recurve archery.

IOA president PT Usha hailed Mohod’s achievement, saying, “It is fitting that Kumkum is the first recipient of the Jaspal Rana Award, as Jaspal too burst onto the scene as a prodigy at the 1994 Asian Games. Her composure under pressure and her ability to find her best form when her back was to the wall augur extremely well for Indian Archery.

“India’s archers have been knocking on the door for more than a decade now, and I firmly believe that this performance by Kumkum and her recurve teammates has shattered the glass ceiling for Indian archery.

“India came close to winning a maiden Olympic medal in the sport at the Paris Olympics, and I am convinced that final frontier will be breached at the Los Angeles Olympics.”

Kalkal, meanwhile, was named the inaugural recipient of the Raja Randhir Singh Award after winning gold in the men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling category.

Hailing Kalkal’s performance, Usha said, “Wrestling is India’s sport, and Sujeet’s performance will be spoken of for years to come. The gold medal will be celebrated, but his never-say-die attitude and refusal to accept silver have earned him a special place in the hearts of all Indians.

“Winning gold medals in elite competition is not easy, but equally important is the effort that goes in when your back is against the wall. I wish Sujeet all success in the years ahead and will be rooting for him to deliver India’s first-ever wrestling gold medal at the Olympic Games in two years’ time.”

The IOA will felicitate Mohod and Kalkal at a ceremony in the coming days.

Mohod, along with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti, won the women’s recurve team gold, ending South Korea’s run of seven consecutive Asian Games titles dating back to the 1998 Bangkok Games.

She followed it up with gold in the individual event, ensuring that South Korea’s women failed to win a recurve gold at the Asian Games for the first time in the history of the discipline.

Her individual gold also secured a quota place for India at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The 23-year-old Kalkal produced one of the most dramatic performances of the Games, defeating reigning Olympic champion Kotaro Kiyooka of Japan in the semifinal before staging a remarkable comeback in the gold-medal bout against Abdulmazhid Kudiyev.

Kalkal trailed 2-9 with time running out but fought back spectacularly to secure a 10-9 victory.

He also continued India’s strong tradition in the 65kg category, following Olympic medallists Yogeshwar Dutt and Bajrang Punia, who won gold in the same weight class at the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games respectively.

India finished fourth in the Asian Games medal standings with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals.

World leaders Narendra Modi, Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu may have hailed him as a “hero”, but for Indian pilot Smit Machchhar, he can perhaps be simply described as an airline captain, lifelong learner, father and someone who helps others fly higher.

Captain Smit Machchar displayed courage even when he was stabbed and managed to save passengers onboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which his co-pilot was allegedly trying to crash on Wednesday.

The Mumbai native was critically assaulted and covered in blood when he managed to open the cockpit door. This allowed the crew and passengers on the aircraft to overpower the accused co-pilot, and other pilots travelling as passengers help in stabilising the aircraft in time.

"As a pilot, I was simply doing my duty," he has humbly said in a post.

In fact, in striking case of déjà vu, during a YouTube podcast series in 2025, when he was asked what's a bigger high, a smooth landing, or an on-time arrival, he had said, "None. Safe. You don't have to think about on time. They've hired other people to take care of that."

According to his Linkedin profile, he has been working with flydubai since June 2022. Earlier, he was a Commander at SpiceJet Limited for over 11 years.

Despite his rich career in aviation, his educational qualifications tell his passion took a sharp detour while growing up.

Before pursuing Bachelor of Business Administration student from Welingkar Institute of Management, he completed his Diploma in Man-Made Textile Chemistry, Apparel and Textiles from SASMIRA Institute of Man-Made Textiles, with an aim to join his family business.

Reports say he was in his late teens when he attended a seminar on aviation that sowed the seed of flying much higher.

"Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on X. "In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him a "true hero".

According to his childhood friend Prateek Gandhi, even as a young boy, Machchar was very calm and composed. "He was the most sorted kind of a guy in our neighbourhood," said Gandhi, who recalled playing cricket with Smit in childhood.

Guwahati : Skipper Shubman Gill clobbered an unbeaten 223, the fastest double hundred in 50-over cricket, and Rohit Sharma belted a 101 as two generations of super stars came together to give India a series-sealing eight-wicket win over the West Indies in the second ODI here on Wednesday.

West Indies might have desperately hoped that 405 for seven remained target far from Indians but how wrong were they! The incumbent captain, who snatched the crown for the fastest ODI 200 (117 balls) from his teammate Ishan Kishan (126 balls), and his predecessor, who made his 35th one-day century, piled 255 runs for the opening wicket in just 26.2 overs as India made 406 for two in 43.3 overs.

On a night when records tumbled at furious pace, India also recorded their highest ODI run chase, and now they are only behind South Africa who lead the world pecking order with the chase of 435 against Australia in 2006 at Johannesburg.

The storm always has a precursor.

The Barsapara pitch had already shown its batting-friendly nature when West Indies batters John Campbell (101; 68b), Shai Hope (104; 94b) and Amir Jangoo (114; 77b) scored hundreds of their own.

But once Indians ended their chase those centuries now resemble calm beach breeze. The home side bettered their previous best chase of 362 for one against Australia in Jaipur in 2013, courtesy an epic by Gill (133 ball, 26x4, 8x6).

However, the initial challenge for India was to pull off their first-ever 400-plus chase, and Rohit and Gill took it a notch higher with a dazzling array of strokes.

Along the way, Rohit brought up 12,000 ODI runs, becoming only the seventh batter and third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach the landmark, before reaching another ODI hundred with an uncharacteristic little hop and jump celebration.

Gill earlier brought up his 11th ODI century in just 62 balls—his fastest in the format. The duo attacked from the outset, combining clean hitting with superb placement.

Gill was particularly fluent, using his wrists to place deliveries in the gaps and then stepping out to drive the spinners over the infield.

Rohit, on the other hand, brought out his trademark pull and pick-up shots, while also finding the boundaries with crisp drives through off side.

India raced past 100 inside 12 overs and then shifted into an even higher gear as Gill brought up his fifty from 38 balls, while Rohit reached his half-century in only 32 deliveries.

The pair’s assault soon turned the daunting target of 406 into a realistic possibility.

By the 22nd over, India had reached 200 without losing a wicket—the first time an opening pair did that in an ODI chase of a 350-plus target.

The partnership eventually ended at 254 when Rohit fell for 101 off 75 balls, but by then India needed only 151 from 24 overs which was mere peanuts by the way the host batters showing their strength, even the pitch remained flatter than an asphalted free way.

After being sent into bat, Campbell set the tone with a 65-ball hundred as the West Indies’ batters ruthlessly exposed India’s inexperienced pace attack.

A self-confessed admirer of Chris Gayle, Campbell channelled the inner Universe Boss perfectly, flaying the Indian attack with brute power and freedom in his 101 off 68 balls (9x4, 5x6).

Hope and Jangoo then kept the West Indies in complete control through the middle and late overs, maintaining a scoring rate around eight an over.

Hope was the anchor and accelerator in one, building his innings carefully before stepping on the gas to make full use of the reprieve he got when he was dropped on 27 by Virat Kohli, with the ball bursting through his hands at short midwicket.

The skipper brought up a superb 104 off 94 balls, with eight fours and three sixes, keeping the tempo high rather than allowing India to claw their way back.

Jangoo complemented Hope perfectly, mixing calculated stroke-play with aggression and reached his second ODI century off just 69 balls, finishing on 114 with 13 fours and three sixes as the Windies brought up three centuries in an ODI for the first time.

The total surpassed their previous best of 389 against England in 2019.

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who is on the Asian Games duty, and Mohammed Siraj, who is still sitting out, India continue to expose youngsters ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.

But the pace attack threw more questions than answers.

With proven campaigners such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami still being overlooked, India’s search for options beyond the established names hardly looked convincing.

Auqib Nabi, who became the third cricketer from the Valley to represent India, endured a forgettable outing, conceding 84 runs in his 8.5 overs.

Operating at military-medium pace, Nabi struggled to contain the West Indies on a flat surface.

Gurnoor Brar, used as the second-change bowler, was the best among the three returning 2/96, while Prasidh Krishna finished with 1/45 in five overs.

There was further concern for India as batting all-rounder Naman Dhir, who also bowls off-spin, twisted his ankle and had to leave the field in the 36th over after bowling 6.1 overs.

Chandigarh : The investigation into the alleged ₹657-crore fund diversion involving IDFC First Bank and AU Small Finance Bank has uncovered a trail of suspected spending on properties, gold, luxury vehicles, hotels, travel and private parties, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED). The agencies are examining how government funds allegedly moved through bank accounts and shell entities before being converted into assets and other forms of expenditure.

The case concerns money allegedly diverted from accounts belonging to eight Haryana government departments and two Chandigarh Administration entities. Investigators have put the total suspected diversion at around ₹657 crore. The CBI has alleged that bank officials and government personnel were involved in a wider conspiracy through which funds parked with private banks were transferred using fraudulent documents and transactions.

According to investigators, Ribhav Rishi, a former IDFC First Bank branch manager in Chandigarh, is alleged to have played a central role in the scheme. The CBI has accused him of coordinating fraudulent transactions and using forged approval emails and other documents to bypass banking controls. The agency has also alleged that money was routed through several entities and individuals before being used for personal benefit.

One part of the investigation focuses on real estate. The ED has alleged that suspected proceeds were used to acquire properties in Chandigarh, Panchkula and areas around New Chandigarh. In one investigation involving businessman Vikram Wadhwa, the agency said four properties worth more than ₹40 crore were purchased during 2025-26. These included residential and agricultural properties as well as plots.

The agencies have also examined purchases of gold. A CBI investigation reported by The Tribune found that approximately ₹329 crore of the suspected diverted money was allegedly used in transactions involving gold and other assets. Investigators said gold purchased through a jeweller could later be sold for cash, creating another route for moving the alleged proceeds.

Luxury spending is another major area under investigation. The CBI has alleged that some of the suspected funds were used for expensive hotels, foreign trips and private parties involving dancers and escorts. Investigators have also examined parties held at venues in Zirakpur and other locations. These allegations form part of the evidence being presented in the ongoing criminal proceedings.

The investigation has also identified allegations involving cash distributions and transactions through multiple accounts. According to the CBI, fraudulent fixed-deposit documents, fabricated approval communications and unauthorised debit transactions were allegedly used to move government funds. The agency has said that banking controls were bypassed in several high-value transactions.

The scale of the suspected fraud has led to multiple investigations, arrests and chargesheets. The CBI has filed chargesheets against several accused in connection with the Haryana government and Chandigarh-related cases. Senior government officials and banking personnel have also faced investigation in separate parts of the case.

The case is still before the courts, and allegations made by investigating agencies have yet to be established through a final judicial determination. The accused persons will have the opportunity to contest the allegations and evidence presented against them.

Investigators continue to trace the movement of the suspected funds, identify assets allegedly acquired with the money and determine the roles of individuals and organisations connected with the transactions. The continuing proceedings are expected to provide further details about how the alleged diversion was carried out and where the funds ultimately went.

Phagwara : Tensions at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, escalated sharply on September 27 after student protests over an alleged sexual-assault incident turned violent. More than 2,000 police personnel were deployed around the university as authorities worked to restore order.

The protests began after claims circulated among students and on social media alleging that a female student had been sexually assaulted on the university campus. Police subsequently registered an FIR against an unidentified person based on a student's complaint. However, officials have not confirmed the allegation as established fact, and an investigation is underway.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to examine the complaint. Investigators are expected to review CCTV recordings, forensic material, phone-related evidence and statements from people who may have information about the incident. Police also inspected the hostel area identified in the complaint as the alleged location of the incident.

Students were given the option of returning to their hometowns after consulting their parents or guardians. Those who remained on campus were advised to stay inside their hostels or residences and avoid unnecessary movement or participation in activities connected with the unrest.

Russia has no military objective whatsoever in doing this – it is purely an attempt to break people and inflict as much harm as possible on our society. Tragically, there are people killed… My condolences to their families and loved ones. Dozens of people were injured,” Zelenskyy said.

He said that overall, since the previous day, Russia had used 277 attack drones of various types, 155 of them jet-powered. “Over the past 24-hour period, 11 shelling attacks by Ukraine’s armed formations were registered,” the statement said, adding that there were no reports of casualties among civilians. According to the statement, two residential buildings and two civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged.

In a separate TASS report on Sunday, the Russian Defence Ministry said Russian air defence forces intercepted and destroyed 43 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and the Black Sea during the day.

“Between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Moscow time (5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. GMT - TASS), on-duty air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 43 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles over the Kursk, Belgorod, Oryol, Bryansk, and Rostov Regions, the Republic of Crimea, as well as over the Black Sea,” the ministry said.

The Russian Defence Ministry also said on Sunday that Russian forces had struck an Omega Telecom data centre in Kyiv, a Novaya Pochta logistics centre in Odesa and a cargo ship carrying military equipment and dual-use goods to the port of Odesa.

“The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue to carry out strikes on communications and logistics centers, as well as vessels used in the interests of the Ukrainian armed forces. This afternoon, drone strikes hit an Omega Telecom data center in Kiev. The company is one of the largest providers of high-speed internet services to the Ukrainian armed forces, including the storage of large volumes of databases,” the ministry said.

“A Novaya Pochta logistics center in Odessa that was used to store military cargo was hit,” it added. “In addition, a cargo ship carrying military equipment and dual-use goods to the port of Odessa to support the Ukrainian armed forces was struck while at sea,” the ministry said.

The Russian Defence Ministry’s claims could not be independently verified.

Earlier, on September 26, following a recent bilateral meeting with Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump said he wanted Russia and Ukraine to “settle” the war.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said, “Reached agreements on many of the subjects. I want him to settle with Putin, and I want Putin to settle with him. Last month, 25,000 people died. Months before that, 32,000 people died, mostly soldiers… What a shame."

But earning a higher salary does not automatically mean that a family will have the same standard of living everywhere in America. Housing, healthcare, transportation, childcare, taxes and other everyday expenses can vary significantly from one city to another.

A recent 2026 estimate has highlighted just how different the financial picture can be for a family of four living in major US cities. The calculation, shared by entrepreneur Aniruddha Anjana, puts San Francisco at the highest end, with an estimated annual income of about **$407,597** for a family of four seeking a comfortable lifestyle. Even Houston, which generally has a lower cost profile than some major coastal cities, was estimated to require more than $200,000 annually.

These figures should be treated as estimates rather than official H-1B salary requirements. The US government does not set one nationwide salary level that guarantees a family can live comfortably. The amount required depends heavily on where the worker lives, household circumstances and spending choices.

Independent data from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Living Wage Calculator also demonstrates the large geographic differences in household expenses. Its 2026 model considers costs including food, housing, healthcare, transportation, childcare, broadband and other basic necessities, along with taxes. The data was updated in February 2026.

For example, MIT's estimate for the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metropolitan area shows that a household with two adults and two children, where only one adult works, requires approximately **$45.76 per hour** for that worker. Assuming 2,080 working hours per year, that works out to roughly **$95,181 annually** before considering lifestyle expenses beyond the calculator's basic-needs framework.

The difference becomes even more noticeable when both adults work. In the same Washington-area example, MIT estimates approximately **$34.76 per hour for each working adult** in a two-adult, two-child household. Together, that represents roughly $144,600 in annual gross earnings if both adults work full time.

Other parts of the country can have different requirements. MIT's 2026 data for Arizona, for instance, estimates that one working adult supporting two adults and two children needs about **$42.58 per hour**, or approximately $88,600 annually.

The major expenses behind these calculations include housing and utilities, food, transportation, healthcare and childcare. Families with young children can face particularly significant childcare costs, while households in expensive metropolitan areas may devote a large share of income to rent or mortgage payments.

Taxes are another important factor. A salary figure that looks high on paper represents gross income, not the amount a household actually takes home. Federal and state taxes, payroll deductions, health insurance contributions and other employment-related deductions can substantially reduce disposable income.

For H-1B workers, compensation can also depend on occupation, employer, experience and location. The visa itself should therefore not be viewed as a guarantee of a particular lifestyle or income level.

The broader takeaway from the 2026 data is that there is no single salary figure that applies to every H-1B family in America. A household considering relocation should examine the specific city or metropolitan area, expected rent or mortgage, health insurance, childcare, transportation costs, taxes and savings goals.

NEW YORK : Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday (local time), with Iran set to press its case over the ongoing war and seek diplomacy aimed at easing tensions, moments after US President Donald Trump warned that he would “annihilate” the Islamic Republic if a peace deal is not reached.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the General Assembly during the morning session on Wednesday, where he is expected to outline Tehran's position on the conflict, alleged crimes and what Iran describes as a loss of trust in international institutions.

Ahead of his departure for New York, Pezeshkian said Iran would forcefully present its position at international forums.

“We will forcefully raise Iran's positions in international forums. The issues we will raise at the United Nations are expressing the oppressed state of the Iranian nation, the crimes that have occurred, and the distrust that has been created. We went to the negotiating table several times and signed agreements, but unfortunately, the whole world saw how commitments were not fulfilled and the writings were trampled underfoot," he said en route to the US.

He also called for global awareness of what Tehran describes as oppression in the region and stressed the need for peace.

“The people of the world should become aware of the oppressive behaviours in the region; an assembly with the slogan 'Trust' should restore trust to the world and end the war and bloodshed," he added.

Pezeshkian's arrival comes moments after Trump used his UN General Assembly address to present a choice between reaching a deal with Iran and taking military action against the Islamic Republic.

Trump warned he could 'annihilate the Islamic Republic' if no deal is reached to end the conflict.

“But I have a big decision to make. Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before? Maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world. Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? But I believe we'll make a deal right after the election, because it doesn't make sense for them not to,” Trump said.

Trump also said Iran was waiting to see how he performs in the US midterm election while maintaining that the election would not affect his approach to Tehran.

“They're waiting to see how I do in the midterm election. What they don't realise is that I'm not running," the US President said.

"I gave absolutely no credence and will not give credence to the election when it comes to Iran. It doesn't even enter my mind. The only thing that does is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon," he added.

Members of the Iranian delegation also staged a walkout from the General Assembly as Trump began speaking about US military operations against Tehran, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Iranian Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in New York on Monday, has also highlighted the issue of trust ahead of the diplomatic engagements surrounding the General Assembly.

“It is natural that no other trust remains in an organisation that is under the influence of these countries. Therefore, an important issue is the restoring of trust, and it is a good opportunity to talk to the world about how trust in this United Nations has been lost and how it can be revived,” Araghchi said.

Pezeshkian was given an official send-off before his departure by First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, Deputy for International Affairs of the Supreme Leader's Office Hojjatoleslam Walmoslemin Mohsen Qomi and members of the Iranian cabinet, according to IRNA.

During his stay in New York, Pezeshkian is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with attending heads of state, as well as separate interactions with educated Iranians residing in the United States, American elites and think tanks.

The UN General Assembly's high-level general debate is being held from September 22 to 26 and on September 28 at UN headquarters in New York.

NEW DELHI : The Opposition on Wednesday cited a media report, which claimed that the two Election Commissioners objected to the Election Commission's steps 14 times in 10 months amid the SIR rollout, and alleged that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has “destroyed” the credibility of the poll panel.

Many of them also called for Kumar's removal.

The Opposition's reaction came after The Indian Express revealed that questions were raised on issues related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls within the three-member Election Commission (EC) itself, time and again by two of the three Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.

The national rollout of the SIR has been under the supervision of all three Commissioners. But Sandhu and Joshi have formally objected, on record, at least 14 times over the last 10 months -- four times on a single day -- to decisions taken and orders issued, they say, without their knowledge, the report in the English daily said.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared the screenshot of the media report on X.

Ramesh said that on behalf of the party, his colleague Abhishek Singhvi will be speaking in detail to the media on the sensational revelations made in a leading national newspaper on the way “the CEC has destroyed the credibility and integrity of the Election Commission of India”.

Congress MP Manish Tewari also reacted to the media report, saying that if the ostensible facts as reported are correct then it seems to suggest that there is an “invisible hand” running the Election Commission.

“If rules were not allegedly followed and decisions were taken that were not unanimous or by majority then all the decisions of @ECISVEEP are per -se arbitrary and capricious if not completely illegal,” Tewari said on X.

“This is perhaps a fit case for serious considering an impeachment proceeding but more importantly the fundamental question is as to how will the credibility of @ECISVEEP be ever resurrected,” he said.

Congress MP Mohamed Javed also cited the report and said this demands more than silence.

“CEC Gyanesh Kumar must disclose every disputed decision, explain who authorised it, and answer the objections on record. Electoral institutions cannot operate without transparent accountability,” he said on X.

CPI(M) MP John Brittas said this is no longer an Election Commission, it is a “one-man autocracy” under CEC Kumar.

“Two Election Commissioners have formally objected 14 times in 10 months. They branded the addition of new voters and mass deletion 'unauthorised and illegal'. They recorded objections to secret deletions, restorations, and form 6 changes that harass young first-time voters - all while being kept in the dark,” he said.

This is the open subversion of the EC and our democracy too, Brittas said.

“Parliament must immediately start the process for the removal of the CEC. We had in fact submitted a notice for removal on 24th April, 2026 as per the constitutional stipulations - solid grounds and around 70 members signing (50 in the stipulated number),” he said.

The Constitution provides this power for precisely such moments of institutional capture and subversion, he said.

“The Supreme Court must annul the entire SIR process without delay. When two of the three Commissioners put on record that the exercise is illegal and destructive of the electoral roll's integrity, judicial silence becomes complicity,” Brittas said.

What Kumar is doing is the death knell of a democratic nation, he said.

“Remove the CEC. Strike down the SIR. Or accept that free and fair elections in India are already being buried,” the CPI(M) MP said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut also cited the media report, and said, “A-Gyanesh Kumar will go to jail! He will have to go! His masters will flee the country and run away!”

TMC Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien said on X, “Five months ago, 60+ Rajya Sabha MPs (50 needed) wrote to Chairman RS moving Motion to remove CEC Gyanesh Kumar. After big news break today that two Election Commissioners objected to many of CEC's actions, it's time to bring out the RS Motion today. Impeach CEC to save democracy”.

New Delhi: British national Jagtar Singh Johal, widely known as Jaggi Johal, has received a significant legal relief after the Delhi High Court granted him bail in seven cases being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The order, passed on September 18, 2026, clears the way for his release after nearly nine years in custody, subject to completion of the required legal formalities and compliance with the court’s conditions.

Johal was arrested in Punjab in November 2017 after travelling to India for his wedding. He subsequently became an accused in several cases connected by investigators to alleged targeted killings and a wider conspiracy attributed to the banned Khalistan Liberation Force.
