However, digitisation alone cannot solve problems involving missing historical records. Authorities also need reliable procedures for preserving original documents, correcting errors and maintaining an accurate chain of ownership.

Experts and land-rights observers have repeatedly stressed the importance of regular demarcation and timely updating of revenue records. Clear documentation can help identify unauthorized construction and occupation before disputes become deeply entrenched.

The situation also raises questions about accountability. Whenever public land changes hands without proper authorization, there needs to be a transparent examination of the records, approvals and officials involved in the process.

For Punjab, tackling encroachments therefore requires more than demolition drives. Stronger record management, transparent land transfers, regular inspections and strict adherence to revenue procedures could help prevent disputes from escalating.

The larger concern is that weaknesses in the land-record system can affect both the government and ordinary citizens. Reliable records provide legal certainty, protect community property and reduce the scope for prolonged litigation.

As scrutiny increases, the focus is likely to remain on whether Punjab can strengthen its land-management systems and ensure that public property remains protected from unauthorized occupation.

Kathmandu : The death toll from Nepal’s devastating flash floods rose to 1,127 on Wednesday as rescuers are racing to find thousands still missing a week after the Himalayan disaster, police said.

According to the Nepal Police, 348 more bodies were recovered from Chitwan, 217 from Nawalparasi East, 190 from Nawalparasi West and 155 from Nuwakot.

Similarly, 66 bodies were recovered from Gorkha, 59 from Dhading, 45 from Rasuwa, and 38 from Tanahu.

Police said postmortem and legal identification procedures had been completed for 1,113 bodies, while 95 had been handed over to relatives.

Details of 911 unidentified bodies have been uploaded to the Nepal Police website to help families identify missing relatives.

So far, security forces have rescued 6,541 people from the affected areas while search operations continued for 4,858 missing people, the police said.

Authorities have deployed 7,912 police personnel to flood-hit areas for search and rescue operations, relief distribution and the management of recovered bodies.

Police teams are also moving families from high-risk areas to safer locations, clearing roads blocked by debris and coordinating search, rescue and relief operations with local authorities and residents.

Mumbai : The Bombay High Court on Wednesday ordered a CBI probe into the death of former celebrity manager Disha Salian after her father raised suspicion about the circumstances in which she passed away in 2020.

A bench of Justices Sarang Kotwal and Ranjitsinha Raja Bhonsale said the CBI would register an FIR and record the statement of the deceased's father, Satish Salian, but no person would be treated as an accused until and unless there is sufficient material gathered against them during the probe.

The court ordered the Mumbai police to hand over all case papers to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) forthwith.

"In case the investigation reveals that no case is made out, the CBI will file the appropriate summary report before the court concerned," the bench said.

Satish Salian would be at liberty to challenge the report, the court said.

Disha Salian died on June 8, 2020, after falling off the 14th floor of a residential building in Mumbai's Malad area. The city police then registered an Accidental Death Report.

After conducting an inquiry, the police claimed that Disha Salian's death was a case of suicide.

Her father, however, filed a petition in the high court last year alleging that his daughter was gang-raped and murdered.

Satish Salian's advocate Nilesh Ojha had raised doubts about the police probe into the case.

Flagstaff (US) : A major flash flood at the Grand Canyon forced the evacuation of more than 60 people and swept large boulders, metal structures and other debris into the Colorado River, the National Park Service said.

The flash flooding occurred Saturday afternoon in Bright Angel Creek, which flows into the Colorado River. Torrents of water destroyed footbridges over the creek and significantly changed the landscape, widening the creek bed and creating what appeared to be a new rapid in the river.

Park officials said they were seeking information about more than 20 people who may be missing following the flooding. They urged anyone with information about people who were hiking or camping in the area to contact authorities.

More than 60 people were evacuated from Phantom Ranch, a popular stop for rafters that features a historic canteen and dormitories.

No injuries have been reported so far.

Thane : For a group of 43 pilgrims from Maharashtra, the journey back from Nepal felt like a blessing, yet it was shadowed by the chilling memory that the hotel where they had just sat down for breakfast was swept away moments later in the flash floods.

Returning home after narrowly escaping the tragedy, they carried the haunting realisation of how close they had come to disaster.

The 43 pilgrims from Maharashtra, including residents of Thane, returned to Mumbai on Sunday after being stranded amidst flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border during their Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

The floods washed away the hotel where they had stayed and some of its staff members lost their lives, one of the pilgrims said.

"When we learned that the hotel, where we had eaten our breakfast a little while earlier, had been swept away along with its staff members, we were left completely numb," said Prakash Shantaram Mane, a Kalyan resident who had travelled with his wife Pratibha.

He expressed profound relief upon landing in Mumbai.

The pilgrims, who had travelled through Rudra Tour and Travels, were stuck in the Timure border area shortly after crossing into China.

Following instructions from Chinese authorities, restrictions were placed on movement, leaving pilgrims from around the world stranded in Saga, Mane said.

Some of the pilgrims managed to establish contact with Abhijit Darekar, a close aide of Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde, he said.

The Emergency Control Room of the Maharashtra government and Thane District Collectorate were continuously tracking the group's location, a local official said here.

Thane Resident Deputy Collector Sandeep Mane, Kalyan tehsildar Vikas Gardukar and MLA Rajesh More maintained direct communication with the group.

The pilgrims, accompanied by nine Nepali tour staff, eventually returned to Kathmandu on August 29 before boarding a Nepal Airlines flight to Mumbai on Sunday afternoon.

Toronto : Canada struck back at the United States on Tuesday with retaliatory tariffs on about USD 20 billion worth of American goods, including steel, dairy products, appliances and farm equipment, as the trade war between the once-friendly neighbours escalated sharply.

Canada's retaliation came after the Trump administration imposed 50 per cent tariffs over the weekend on Canadian goods following the collapse of trade negotiations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of trying to subordinate Canada and said US demands during the failed talks showed that Americans wanted to "destroy our major industries".

President Donald Trump intensified the confrontation on Monday, telling Canadian leaders to "fall in line" or face consequences "far WORSE" than existing tariffs and threatening new 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel.

Trump added another provocation on Tuesday, saying the United States was giving "serious consideration" to renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America" in a feud with Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Such a change would be reminiscent of the Republican president's unilateral action last year by executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

The tariffs will take effect on September 8 at rates of 15 per cent, 25 per cent and 50 per cent, with Canada matching the corresponding US tariff rates on more than 700 products such as pulp and paper and electronics.

The tariffs on many American products would double from 25 per cent to 50 per cent, with the largest share of the new measures affecting steel and aluminium.

Canadian officials said the goal is not to raise revenue but to protect Canadian companies and reduce US imports.

US steel imports, for example, have already fallen 30 per cent since Canada imposed a 25 per cent tariff, and the new 50 per cent rate is expected to cut them further, Canadian officials said.

Goods facing 50 per cent tariffs include some steel and aluminium products, furniture and clothing. Appliances, dairy products including cheese, fish and seafood, and certain steel and aluminium derivatives will face 25 per cent tariffs. Existing Canadian counter-tariffs on US autos will remain in place.

Canada also announced a support package for workers and businesses affected by the dispute worth 7.5 billion in Canadian dollars (USD 5.4 billion).

Canadian officials acknowledged the counter tariffs will raise costs for some businesses and consumers but said they expect the overall economic effects to be moderate.

They said the government has provided more than 30 billion Canadian dollars (USD 21.7 billion) in tariff-related support since the beginning of 2025 - far more than it has collected in retaliatory duties - as it tries to cushion the blow from the trade fight.

Canada and the United States have deeply integrated supply chains across autos, energy, agriculture and manufacturing, making a prolonged trade fight potentially costly for businesses and workers on both sides of the border.

Businesses and consumers are caught in the middle, facing uncertainty about how much prices may increase.

Michael Howard II, owner of a furniture business in Warren, Michigan, outside Detroit, said the tariffs will hamper the "ability for us to put food on the table for our family" and affect "the ability for us to give back to our community".

Howard and his wife started their business a decade ago. They make and sell everything from dining room tables to bookcases.

"To say that we don't need Canada is just disingenuous," he said. "It's dishonest. And it's just absolutely not truthful. We need our neighbour, but also they need us."
