Washington : The US is planning to impose a USD 1,00,000 fee on visas issued to international students for working in the US after graduation from an American university, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Trump Administration move comes after a US court struck down a proposal to levy a USD 1,00,000 fee on H1-B visas.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Department of Homeland Security is mulling the high fee on Optional Practical Training (OPT) visas which are an extension of F-1 visas issued to students.

The OPT programme allows foreign graduates to work for one to three years on their student visas in areas directly related to their studies.

Roughly 4,19,000 foreigners were working on OPT in 2024, the latest year for which data are available.

Tech companies, which conduct most of the recruitments from US universities, opposed the USD 1,00,000 fee on H1-B visas.

A DHS spokeswoman said in a statement: “No policies should be considered final until formally announced. At DHS we are always having conversations about how to use all tools in our arsenal to protect the integrity of our legal immigration system.”

In addition to the H-1B and student visas, officials at the State Department are also weighing attaching a USD 1,00,000 bond on applicants for green cards outside the US, redeemable only after they move to the US and become citizens.

The OPT program is one of the primary attractions for international students choosing to study in the US.

Without OPT, most international students would be forced to leave the US immediately after graduation, taking the skills they gained at American universities to foreign markets.

Rawalakot [PoJK] : At least 14 people were killed and nearly two dozen others injured after Pakistani security forces allegedly opened fire on protesters in Rawalakot on Monday evening, eyewitnesses associated with the Awami Huqooq Long March claimed,.

In a video released, Imtiaz Aslam, a core member of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), said the protest convoy had reached Chinar Chowk and was advancing toward D-Chowk before halting for the night at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Chowk in Rawalakot.

Aslam said, "Today, the forces from Pakistan opened fire on our innocent youths. As a result, 14 of our young people have been martyred. Among them is Usman Nazir, the younger brother of the movement's founder, Omar Nazir Kashmiri. Other martyrs include a companion from Khaigala, one from Kotli city, one from Tattapani, one from Banja-Baspoor, one from Chhota Gala, and one from Haveli. In total, 14 have been martyred, including two of our Baloch friends. Almost two dozen others are injured."

He appealed to overseas Kashmiris to raise the issue internationally, alleging that the authorities were carrying out atrocities against protesters.

"We are moving forward. I appeal to overseas Kashmiris to stand up against these atrocities. The state is in a state of panic and is resorting to genocide. Please protest at Pakistani embassies and international human rights organisations like the UN. Organise rallies to show solidarity with the Long March participants," he said.

Aslam also urged people in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad divisions to hold demonstrations in solidarity with the protesters, claiming that internet and mobile services had been suspended, making communication difficult.

"Because of transport issues, we will march on foot over the next few days. God willing, in three to four days, we will reach the city of martyrs and power, Muzaffarabad. Tonight, the Awami Huqooq Long March will make its first stop at Maqbool Bhat Shaheed Chowk," he added.

Another eyewitness said the protesters had entered Rawalakot's Chandni Chowk while carrying white flags and insisted that the movement remained peaceful.

"Our youth, raising slogans of 'Allahu Akbar,' have reached Rawalakot's Chandni Chowk. Alhamdulillah! By the grace and mercy of Allah, we have arrived here. Many have been martyred, and much of our blood has been shed by these heartless ones. Yet, I salute the announcements being made from the stage, requesting the forces to retreat. We are peaceful people, carrying white flags. Please, step back; we have no fight with you," the eyewitness said.

"As we have maintained from the beginning, we have no war with Pakistan, no war with the Pakistani forces, and no war with its people. But we have shown you the oppression that took place here today. People used to ask us where our bodies go--this time, we have shown them to you. The facts are right before your eyes," the eyewitness added.

The eyewitness also appealed to overseas Kashmiris to amplify the protesters' demands, claiming that a communications blackout had been imposed in the region.

"For God's sake, come out! For us, for our martyred brothers, and for this oppressed nation--come out. I appeal to all overseas Kashmiris: do not remain silent. If you are quiet, our voice will be lost. There is a total blackout here; the internet and mobile services are completely shut down. You are our last hope. After Allah, you are our only support. You must stand with us, stand with us, stand with us!" the eyewitness said.

The reported casualties and allegations of police firing have been claimed by the eyewitnesses present, and there was no immediate official response from Pakistani authorities. (ANI)

The apex court referred to the temporary measures being taken to securely conduct the NEET exam, saying ad-hoc-ism had created trouble for years.

The court said it expected the government to take concrete steps on cyber security and data protection as the NTA plans computer-based test for NEET-UG exam from the next year.

On the steps to curb the NEET paper leaks, SG Tushar Mehta told the court that the Centre is willing to walk 10 extra miles to address the problems faced by children.

He said everything is being done under the supervision of highest executive level.

Four Indian nationals on board a merchant vessel were killed in an attack on the ship when it was leaving Ukraine’s Odesa port, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Monday. GeographicReference

The vessel—M V Golden Leo—had 17 crew members, including five Indian nationals.

India condemned the attack and reiterated that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members is “deplorable and should be avoided”.

New Delhi, however, did not clarify who carried out the attack.

“On the evening of July 19, the vessel MV Golden Leo was attacked while departing the port of Odesa. At the time of the incident, there were 17 crew members on board, including five Indian nationals,” the MEA said.

“As per information available, four Indian nationals have tragically lost their lives, while one is hospitalised in a critical condition,” it said.

The MEA said the Indian mission in Ukraine is closely monitoring the situation and making every effort to extend all possible assistance to those affected.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased Indian nationals and wish the injured Indian national a speedy and full recovery,” it said.

“India condemns such attacks and reiterates that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members, or otherwise impeding freedom of navigation and commerce, is deplorable and should be avoided,” the MEA said in a statement.

The incident came amid escalating hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.

Florida : As hostilities continue to rise in West Asia, the United States Central Command said on Sunday (local time) that it carried out a fresh wave of strikes against Iran. President Trump said that Iran had been hit 'very badly' in the wake of the American strikes and that it does not control the strait.

Sharing the details in a post on X, CENTCOM said that the strikes were aimed at targeting Tehran's military capabilities which it claimed were used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

It said, "CENTCOM began conducting a new wave of strikes against Iran at 7 p.m. ET today for the ninth consecutive night. The strikes will continue degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz."

Meanwhile, Iranian state broadcaster Press TV reported that multiple explosions were heard in Mahshahr, Imam Khomeini ports; Tabriz city -- thus having air defences activated in Konarak, southern Iran.

US President Donald Trump said that Iran had been hit "very badly".

"Iran has been very badly damaged. They have almost lost everything militarily... They've got some manufacturing capabilities, not much. We control the Strait, they don't control anything."

He made the remarks while speaking to the media on Sunday (local time). He said the strikes come in honour of the US service members killed in West Asia.

Tehran [Iran] : : At least 38 people have been killed and more than 400 others injured in US strikes across several Iranian provinces, Iran's Health Ministry said on Friday, stating that the attacks targeted civilian infrastructure, including bridges, power facilities and the maritime control tower at Chabahar's Shahid Kalantari Port.

According to Iranian state media Press TV, the strikes carried out from late Thursday into early Friday affected areas in the Hormozgan, Bushehr, Sistan and Baluchestan, Khuzestan and Lorestan provinces.

Iran's Health Ministry said the casualties included three women and one person below the age of 18, while 47 injured people remain hospitalised.

The maritime control tower at Shahid Kalantari Port in Chabahar was also destroyed in the strikes. However, the port's berths, cargo-handling facilities and other operational infrastructure remained intact, with no casualties reported at the site, as reported by Press TV.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Friday (local time) confirmed that it has "successfully destroyed" the surveillance tower at Iran's Shahid Kalantari Port in Chabahar, saying the facility formed part of a maritime surveillance network used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to monitor commercial shipping in the Gulf of Oman, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian news agency IRNA said technical and operational teams began assessing the damage, securing the area and reviewing steps to resume port activities. Cargo loading and unloading operations are expected to restart after safety checks are completed, it added.

Meanwhile, authorities in Hormozgan province reported major damage after strikes hit several locations, including six bridges in Khamir County. The Hormozgan Governor's Office said seven people were killed and nine others injured in the attacks.

Officials said the strikes affected transport links connecting Bandar Abbas, Bandar Khamir and Lar, while emergency teams worked to restore movement through alternative routes, Press TV reported.

Iranian officials also reported casualties in Bandar Abbas, saying one person was killed and eight others injured after a strike hit a residential area. Separately, a railway branch station in the city was damaged, leaving two people injured, according to provincial authorities, as reported by Press TV.

In Bushehr province, Governor Mohammad Mozaffari said two strikes were reported within hours, injuring one person.

In Khuzestan province, Deputy Governor Valiollah Hayati said US forces targeted areas around Ahvaz, with authorities assessing the extent of damage. Iranian officials had earlier alleged that strikes near Ahvaz forced the temporary evacuation of Shahid Baghaei Hospital, which specialises in cancer treatment.

In western Iran's Lorestan province, Deputy Governor Saeed Pourali said a strike was reported in the Veysian district of Chegeni County.

The developments came after US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had carried out multiple rounds of strikes against Iran, targeting military capabilities, including coastal surveillance systems, air defence sites, logistics infrastructure and maritime assets.

Iranian authorities have accused the United States of targeting civilian infrastructure, while Washington has said its operations are aimed at degrading Iranian military capabilities and responding to threats against regional security.

Washington : US President Donald Trump declassified intelligence on Thursday that he maintained showed Chinese interference in US elections, reviving his long-running attacks on election security despite a US intelligence assessment that found no evidence Beijing affected the 2020 vote that he lost.

The 25-minute prime-time address underscored Trump’s effort to make election security a central political issue ahead of November’s midterm elections, when his fellow Republicans will be defending their slender congressional majorities.

Trump used his remarks to again press Republicans in Congress to pass legislation imposing new voter identification and citizenship requirements, despite longstanding findings that voter fraud in US elections is rare. The bill has stalled in the Senate amid fierce Democratic opposition.

Trump said the declassified documents would reveal “shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure.” But many appeared to show the opposite, or were not related to US election infrastructure at all.

The speech came at a challenging political moment for Trump and Republicans, with his approval rating weighed down by the unpopular Iran war and high energy prices. Trump only briefly mentioned the war at the outset, saying the US was “winning big,” while listing a series of domestic accomplishments, including tax cuts and his immigration crackdown, before turning to election security.

The President said he was declassifying sensitive information that showed China had illicitly acquired 220 million US voter files, including names, addresses and other data used to register to vote.

He asserted that members of the US intelligence community deliberately suppressed information about the extent of China’s activities.

His allegations contradict an unclassified 2021 US intelligence community assessment that found no indications any foreign actor attempted to alter or succeeded in altering “any technical aspect” of the 2020 presidential election vote, including voter registrations, ballots, tabulations or results.

That assessment was conducted under John Ratcliffe, then Trump’s director of national intelligence and now his CIA director.

The report also found China had pursued an effort dating to at least 2008 to collect information on US voters, public opinion, political parties, candidates and top government officials, likely aiming to use the material to predict election results.

Two people familiar with the matter said that US voter data obtained by China was not confidential – voter files are routinely purchased by political consultants – and could not be manipulated.

Ahead of Trump’s speech, some White House officials expressed concern that disclosing the China information could be misleading, sources told Reuters.

Trump’s harsh language about China risked rocking a relationship that has steadied following last year’s costly trade war. Trump hopes to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in September about improving trade relations.

Before Trump began speaking, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy, Liu Chang, said in response to a request for comment, “China has never and will never interfere in the presidential elections of the US”

FAMILIAR CLAIMS GOING BACK YEARS

Trump has spent years raising doubts about electoral outcomes, falsely asserting that his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden was rigged. He has also advanced other false claims, including that mail-in balloting is rife with fraud, voting machines are vulnerable and non-citizen voting is widespread.

Numerous courts and vote recounts found no evidence of large-scale fraud in the 2020 election.

Trump said the documents would reveal serious weaknesses in election security. But many either appeared to be inconsistent with that assertion or were unrelated to US election infrastructure:

One CIA document, prepared last month, concerned Venezuela’s election, not America’s.

“We assess that vote tabulation systems would be difficult to manipulate on a wide enough scale to compromise election results,” another document said.

A third document, produced by the CIA, detailed efforts by Chinese spies to target Biden’s campaign and noted that Beijing “does not currently intend to covertly interfere to try to sway the outcome of the election,” although it said China might later decide to do so.

“Trump’s shocking ‘bombshells’ about China are totally bogus,” Democratic Senator Mark Warner, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a statement during the speech.

“The fact is our intelligence agencies unanimously agreed that China did not even try to change a single vote in the 2020 election.”

POLITICAL HEADWINDS

While Trump cast US elections as highly vulnerable, he did not provide evidence of any actual votes in 2020 that were altered or manipulated.

Dubai : The US military early Wednesday reimposed a blockade on Iranian ports over Tehran’s attacks on ships trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, sparking new strikes on nations hosting American forces as an interim deal to end the war further unravelled.

Days of retaliatory strikes across the Middle East by Iran - and both nations’ attempts to assert control of the waterway through which a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas trade passes during peacetime - threaten to push the region back to all-out war.

The US first imposed the blockade in mid-April and then lifted it in mid-June, a day after signing the interim deal that set a 60-day period for negotiations over issues like Iran’s nuclear program, but talks have stalled as fighting over the strait has intensified.

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard threatened Wednesday to halt all energy exports from the Middle East over the blockade.

“The export of oil and gas from the region will be either for everyone or for no one,” it said.

When US President Donald Trump announced the return of the blockade Monday, he also said he would impose a 20 per cent fee on ships passing through the strait. But he dropped the plan to collect fees hours before resuming the blockade, citing requests from allies in the Persian Gulf.

Both US and Iran launched attacks as blockade reimposed

The US carried out another wave of strikes as it reimposed the blockade, striking dozens of targets over seven hours, the US military’s Central Command said Wednesday.

Missile alert warnings went out in Bahrain and Kuwait early Wednesday morning as they faced incoming Iranian fire, something that’s been a daily occurrence, further straining a ceasefire in the war. US Navy Adm. Brad Cooper, who leads Central Command, said in a statement that Iran had launched dozens of missiles and drones at neighbouring Gulf Arab countries.

“US forces are holding Iran accountable for unwarranted aggression that continues to endanger innocent lives,” Cooper said.

There are at least 19 US warships in the Arabian Sea, including two aircraft carriers and an amphibious assault ship with more than 1,000 Marines aboard. Central Command also said in a social media post that there are “hundreds of military aircraft operating across the Middle East.” When the US and Israel launched the war on Iran on February 28, Tehran effectively shut the passage by attacking and threatening ships. That sent the price of oil, fertiliser and other goods soaring.

Iran has more recently attacked ships moving through the strait on a route near Oman overseen by the US military that is outside Tehran’s control, setting off the recent violence. The US has threatened to reopen the strait by force - but experts say that would require a much bigger armada if not tens of thousands of ground troops.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, criticised America’s ongoing attacks targeting his country.

“The US is the aggressor, not the victim,” he wrote to the world body’s leader, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. WorldNews Updates

Trump says he’s replacing the fees with Gulf investments

Trump said Tuesday that he was called by the region’s “kings and emirs,” who suggested an alternate arrangement to charging ships fees to pass through the strait like the president proposed a day earlier.

“They said we’d love to do it a different way. We’d love to invest in the United States with billions and billions of dollars,” Trump told reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office.

Trump said he preferred that arrangement to charging tolls “because I don’t think anybody should be able to charge a fee for the strait.” It was unclear if the investment deals would be new commitments relative to what Trump announced after a visit last year to the Middle East.

Trump’s plan to charge fees would have been a change to longstanding American policy and a departure from US promises that the strait would remain open to all without tolls.

Trump told Fox News Channel on Tuesday night that more US strikes against Iran were coming over the next two days and that bridges and power plants could be targets by next week unless negotiations resume. Already, the US has struck at least one bridge.

“You better make a deal, or you’re not going to have anything left,” Trump warned.

Strikes and counterstrikes resume across the Mideast

US Central Command said it struck several areas in Iran earlier Tuesday; Tehran acknowledged the strikes but provided no overall casualty or damage assessments.

Hours after the US said it ended its strikes, the Iranian city of Bushehr on the Persian Gulf was hit in at least four locations, the IRNA news agency reported. Explosions in the southwestern city of Ahvaz and the southern port city of Bandar Abbas also were reported by Iranian state media Tuesday night.

The attacks again raised the possibility that Gulf Arab states were retaliating against Iran without discussing it in public.

Kuwait separately said an Iranian attack wounded four members of its navy Tuesday and set a building on fire.

The interim peace deal is in peril

Under the interim deal, Iran agreed that passage through the strait would remain free of charge for 60 days - but the agreement left open what would happen after. Iran asserts it has the right to manage traffic and potentially charge fees. The US has disputed that.

The price for a barrel of Brent crude oil, the international standard, briefly topped USD 87 early Tuesday, still well below the nearly USD 120 reached at the height of the war. The price dipped to USD 78 in the aftermath of Trump’s announcement that he had changed course.

Regional mediators meanwhile are still trying to get the United States and Iran back to the negotiating table.

Bangkok :The death toll from a huge fire in a Bangkok music bar has increased to 30, officials said Tuesday.

More than 70 people remain hospitalised, with 24 of them in critical condition, according to Bangkok city officials.

The blaze at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar, the city’s deadliest in 17 years, broke out late Sunday in a northern part of the Thai capital. Firefighters needed half an hour to bring it under control.

The bar, which in Thai calls itself a brewery or beer hall, claimed to accommodate as many as 600 customers. It was not clear how many were present Sunday night.

An investigation into the cause of the fire and whether the bar was following safety regulations is ongoing. Most of the people who were killed were found trapped in windowless bathrooms where they may have sought to escape the flames, police said.

Gaza [Palestine], July 10 : Fresh Israeli strikes in Gaza killed six people on Thursday (local time) despite a US-brokered "ceasefire," Al Jazeera reported, quoting Gaza's Civil Defence agency and health officials.

Two of the six deceased were killed after an Israeli drone struck central Gaza's Nuseirat camp, while the other four died in different parts of the region, Al Jazeera reported, citing the Civil Defence agency. Hospitals in Gaza confirmed receiving the bodies of the six people killed in the attacks.

This development comes amid fresh US strikes in Iran. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that its forces had started conducting additional strikes against Iran to further degrade Tehran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, following recent attacks on commercial shipping and civilian crews.

In a post shared on X, US CENTCOM stated: "At the direction of the Commander in Chief, US Central Command forces have started conducting additional strikes against Iran to further degrade their ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."

Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Thursday claimed it had struck the US Al-Azraq air base in northern Jordan with 10 ballistic missiles, targeting what it described as an "enemy command and control centre in West Asia."

The IRGC stated these retaliatory strikes were in response to a recent attack on Tehran by Washington.

According to a statement carried by Iran's state broadcaster, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the IRGC said the missile strikes marked the "second phase" of its response to what it described as aggression by the United States.

"At 2:20 pm today, IRGC aerospace fighters destroyed the enemy's command and control centre in West Asia and the enemy air base in Al-Azraq, Jordan, with 10 ballistic missiles," the statement read.

Tel Aviv : The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Office has dismissed a news report alleging that US officials feared that Israel might have targeted senior Iranian negotiators during Islamabad talks earlier this year.

In a post on X on Friday, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said, "As usual, The New York Times' latest story about Israel and the Iranian negotiators is fake news. A complete fabrication of reality."

According to the NYT news report as cited by the Times of Israel, US officials had allegedly conveyed indirect warnings to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf during negotiations (Islamabad Talks) earlier this year that Israel might attempt to assassinate them.

The US media report, citing current and former US officials, further alleged that some US officials believed Israel may have been planning to target the two senior Iranian negotiators in the weeks following the April 8 ceasefire that halted fighting in the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

It also claimed that, due to those concerns, US officials asked counterparts in other countries across the region to warn Tehran that Israel might seek to target Araghchi and Ghalibaf.

Al Jazeera noted that Israel has previously been accused of targeting negotiating counterparts in regional conflicts. It cited an incident in September 2025 in which Israel bombed Hamas's negotiating team in Doha, Qatar, where members had gathered to discuss a ceasefire proposal that had reportedly been sent by the Israeli side.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump agreed to meet in the United States in the near future during a phone conversation on Friday, according to a report by the Times of Israel, citing a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

According to the PMO statement, Netanyahu congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and said, "The US is what ensures the freedom of the world, and Israel greatly appreciates the tight bond between the nations."

The statement added that "Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump agreed to meet soon in the US."

The Prime Minister's Office did not provide a specific date or venue for the proposed meeting, according to the Times of Israel.

The developments come as Qatar and Pakistan, on July 1, concluded separate meetings with US and Iranian negotiators in Doha, with "positive progress" reported on issues related to the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The Qatar foreign spokesperson said, "The parties agreed to continue discussions over the coming period, with the next meeting to be scheduled at the earliest possible time following the funeral processions of the former Iranian Supreme Leader."

Doha/Dubai/Virginia Beach, Virginia : Iran and the United States concluded a round of indirect talks on Wednesday with no sign they had made headway toward a lasting peace, focusing instead on issues that they said had been resolved when an interim agreement was announced two weeks ago.

Sources familiar with the discussions said negotiators for the two countries spent two days in Qatar’s Doha discussing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and unfreezing Iran’s funds, two critical issues under the initial agreement.

The next meeting will take place after funeral processions for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is due to be buried on July 9, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said.

The Doha discussions produced “positive progress” on issues related to the memorandum that halted the war in June and were “building on the outcomes” of a summit in Switzerland, the ministry spokesperson said in a post on X.

In Washington, US President Donald Trump said the two sides were making progress on possible limits to Iran’s nuclear program — the main reason he launched the war along with Israel in February. “The denuclearization of Iran is moving along well,” he told reporters. “They’ve had very good meetings, and we’ll see.”

But the sources said the nuclear program did not come up in the talks, which were technical in nature.

US Vice President JD Vance said that matter would be addressed later. “Obviously, we’re worried about the nuclear issue, we’re going to start talking about that,” he told reporters.

American and Iranian negotiators held separate meetings with Qatari and Pakistani mediators, Qatar’s foreign ministry said.

Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and top US envoy Steve Witkoff, dispatched to the region for what the White House had billed as “high-level” talks, did not attend the sessions, according to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The leader of Iran’s delegation, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, said the talks concluded. Neither side said whether they had managed to bridge any of their differences.

WHO CONTROLS THE STRAIT?

The initial deal calls for Iran and the United States to allow shipping to resume through the Strait of Hormuz, which handled one-fifth of global oil and liquid natural gas trade before the war. Though traffic has partially resumed, the status of the strategic waterway remains unclear and the two countries exchanged strikes last weekend following an Iranian attack on a cargo ship.

Iran is determined to win international recognition of its control over the strait even if it has to do so by force, two senior Iranian sources said, and has repeatedly said it will assess tolls on shipping starting in mid-August, after a toll-free period specified by the initial agreement expires.

Trump’s comments on Wednesday played down the possibility of a return to all-out war with Iran. “I think they’ve come a long way,” he said.

Oil prices fell to their lowest level in four months following Trump’s remarks, and analysts cut their price forecasts for the first time since the war began.

Iran’s state media said on Wednesday that a foreign container ship had run aground in shallow waters outside the shipping route designated by Iranian authorities.

“Hormuz continues to reopen but it’s patchy, unpredictable, and not fully transparent,” said Vandana Hari, founder of oil market analysis provider Vanda Insights.

Several European countries have offered to help clear mines from the Strait, but Germany’s defense minister Boris Pistorius said he did not expect his country to participate, citing Iran’s unwillingness to cooperate with other countries.

Tel Aviv : Asserting the nation's economic self-reliance, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced an ambitious policy shift aimed at ending American financial assistance, declaring that the country's robust economy no longer requires foreign subsidies.

Making the remarks on Tuesday, the Prime Minister outlined his administration's comprehensive strategy across critical security and geopolitical fronts, including state sovereignty, regional military presence, and diplomatic manoeuvres.

Addressing the financial relationship with Washington, Netanyahu stated, "I want to stop American aid. It's like welfare; I don't want it."

He emphasised that Israel's contemporary fiscal strength renders outside funding negligible, adding, "Our economy is no longer a small economy... we can finance ourselves with this fraction of a per cent of our GDP that we receive from the United States. I want this process to start this year."

Turning to core territorial and sovereignty matters, the Prime Minister re-emphasised his administration's unyielding opposition to Palestinian statehood.

He reaffirmed, "Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people. No Palestinian state will be established here."

Netanyahu detailed an aggressive stance on national defence, underscoring that the military will maintain a proactive posture against external adversaries.

He asserted, "We will pursue an active security policy--we won't sit back and wait behind fences."

When questioned about the potential re-establishment of Israeli communities within the Gaza Strip, the Prime Minister maintained a calculated diplomatic silence.

He noted, "As for rebuilding settlements in Gaza, you have to be ready to act first and talk afterwards. Sometimes it's better to separate the two. That's why I'm not going to add anything further on that subject."

Elaborating on his approach to governance and international relations, Netanyahu suggested that strategic ambiguity remains paramount.

He stated, "You have to understand that the art of statecraft isn't limited to domestic politics. I don't have to declare everything to the whole world at every moment."

Highlighting Israel's persistent operations against regional threats, the Prime Minister issued a direct warning regarding cross-border pre-emptive strikes against Tehran's nuclear and military infrastructure.

He remarked, "We entered Iran twice to save ourselves from destruction. There will be a third time if necessary."

Netanyahu also confirmed that Israeli defence forces will maintain their operational positions within Lebanese territory to counter hostile factions.

He explained, "We didn't leave Lebanon. We have effectively established this security belt--about 10 kilometres inside Lebanon--with the agreement of the Lebanese government. And, of course, Hezbollah is outraged. The same is true of Iran."

During a physical assessment of troop deployments in the northern sector, the Prime Minister reiterated that the military presence would persist until cross-border threats were neutralised.

He told the gathered forces, "Our position is clear: we will not leave southern Lebanon until the threat has disappeared. And as long as Hezbollah, armed, is here and threatening us, we will stay here."

The declaration follows the recent signing of a Washington-brokered framework pact between Beirut and Tel Aviv, intended to establish long-term stability and ensure the demilitarisation of the Iran-backed Shiite militia.

Under the stipulations of the diplomatic accord, any eventual troop drawdown by Israeli forces remains strictly contingent upon the Lebanese government successfully establishing specialised operational sectors where the state military takes over security control.

La Guaira : Venezuelans searched for survivors beneath collapsed buildings on Thursday and rescue teams raced to northern areas rocked by a pair of powerful earthquakes that officials say killed around 235 people and left at least 4,300 people injured.

"Unfortunately we have received around 235 patients who arrived without vital signs or died when they arrived at our health facilities," Health Minister Carlos Alvarado told state media on Thursday.

The number of dead and injured is expected to rise with thousands reported missing after the 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes that struck on Wednesday evening, which was among the strongest in Venezuela in more than a century and was felt throughout the region.

Thousands were reported missing and buildings were evacuated as far away as Brazil's Amazon.

In response to the devastation, the US Treasury on Thursday moved to waive some sanctions until October 23 to allow transactions related to earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela that would otherwise be prohibited.

Meanwhile, in cities across northern Venezuela, panicked residents poured into the streets and searched for the missing in the debris.

The injured were pulled out of the rubble covered in dust and blood, among them children and animals. Venezuelan state TV showed dramatic images of rescues, including a woman who was trapped under a cement slab, only a barefoot poking out before crews managed to get her out alive. But few government search teams were seen outside Caracas.

Dayana Delgado, mother of three children, asked where the heavy machinery was that government officials had promised, pointing out that neighbours were the ones digging through the rubble.

"I want to know where my child is, if he's trapped or in a shelter," she said of her eight-year-old son who was missing.

One mother sobbed and collapsed in grief as the bodies of her three- and ten-year-old children were wrapped in blankets and carried away. Others screamed the names of missing loved ones. Some stood in silent shock.

The coastal region of La Guaira -- north of the capital, Caracas -- suffered some of the heaviest damage and casualties. The country's main airport is there and was closed due to damage, complicating aid efforts.

Retired schoolteacher Juan Alberto Mendano climbed through wreckage in La Guaira and past a dead body when he spotted a woman who was trapped and signalling with her hand for help.

"May God rescue her as quickly as possible," said Mendano. "When we heard the scream, there was nothing we could do."

Offers to send aid and supplies poured in from around the world, including from the United States, which seized Venezuela's then-president Nicolas Maduro at the beginning of the year in a surprise military operation.

The natural disaster is just the latest challenge for acting President Delcy Rodriguez, the former vice president who took office in January after Maduro's capture. Venezuela has been facing economic disarray for more than a decade, and many people reject the legitimacy of the political movement Rodriguez represents.

Tyre (Lebanon) : US and Iranian negotiators headed to a Swiss venue on Saturday for talks on adding key details to their interim agreement to halt the war, hours after Tehran said it closed the Strait of Hormuz because of Israel's attacks in Lebanon and warned that little might be achieved if the fighting didn't stop.

US President Donald Trump, in response, unleashed a new threat to impose American tolls in the crucial waterway if a final deal with Iran isn't reached in 60 days, saying the money would be for “services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East”.

The agreement calls for toll-free travel for 60 days.

The announcements indicated a rough start to the technical-level talks that key mediator Pakistan said would begin on Sunday, with Qatari mediators also participating.

US Vice President JD Vance left for Switzerland on Saturday evening, just as Iranian state TV posted a video showing Iran's negotiators arriving there. They are led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and include Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and central bank and oil officials, among others.

The deal calls for billions of dollars of Iran's assets to be unfrozen.

Talks were meant to start on Friday, but the Iranians cancelled plans to attend because of escalating fighting in Lebanon.

Negotiators for the US and Qatar, with help from Iran, worked out an agreement between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group to tamp down hostilities, according to US and regional officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to comment publicly.

Vance told reporters he would be in Switzerland "for a day or two" but was optimistic about making progress in talks about Iran's nuclear programme and on a ceasefire in southern Lebanon. He earlier confirmed that top negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were already in Switzerland.

But Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told state TV that negotiations towards a final agreement would begin once key commitments are upheld. If they are not, "the memorandum of understanding as a whole will be jeopardised".

The strait once again becomes a challenge

The strait has emerged again as a focus. Iran's joint military command said it was closed because of the US' "clear breach of its commitments" by failing to end the war. The interim deal is meant to stop fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon.

The US disputed Iran's announcement.

"Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic continues to flow, and US forces are monitoring the situation to ensure this remains the case," Capt Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US Central Command, said.

The military said that 55 merchant ships transited on Saturday with more than 17 million barrels of oil.

The global economy braced for more uncertainty.

Ships began transiting after the interim US-Iran agreement was signed earlier in the week, a milestone that left plenty of questions unanswered. The US lifted its blockade of Iran's ports and now allows Tehran to sell its oil freely on terms that have left some in US Congress asking whether the war was worth it.

The interim deal signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian gives negotiators 60 days to reach a nuclear agreement, but the issue is intricate and the time can be extended.

Israeli attacks in Lebanon kill at least 16

Earlier on Saturday, as mediators tried to get the parties to Switzerland, a Hezbollah official told The Associated Press that Iran informed the militant group that Tehran won't reopen the strait until Israel announces publicly that it will comply with a "comprehensive ceasefire" in Lebanon and an end to military operations there.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorised to speak publicly.

The official said that Hezbollah would commit to a ceasefire if Israel does.

New Delhi : The Embassy of Iran in India on Saturday rejected the US President Donald Trump's allegations regarding an Indian vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, calling them "baseless".

It also accused Washington of attempting to deflect attention from recent attacks on commercial ships carrying Indian seafarers.

The Iranian Embassy said the US attacked three Indian vessels in less than a week, resulting in the death of three Indian sailors, and described the actions as "brutal" and "pathetic".

In a post on X, the official account of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India shared, "The U.S. president's accusation against Iran regarding an Indian vessel in the Strait of Hormuz is simply baseless. This comes after Trump alleged that Iran was behind the attacks on three vessels carrying Indian seafarers near the Hormuz Strait, which resulted in the deaths of three, despite the US Central Command having confirmed that the strikes were carried out by American naval forces, calling the incident "totally unacceptable".

His remarks followed Iran's condemnation of the United States attacks on commercial vessels carrying Indian seafarers, resulting in the death of three in the Gulf of Oman, describing the actions as "brutal" and accusing Washington of engaging in "lawless conduct" that threatens global peace and maritime security.

In a statement on X, Esmaeil Baqaei, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, expressed condolences over the deaths of Indian nationals killed in the attacks and called for international accountability.

"The brutal U.S. attacks on Indian commercial vessels, which have killed at least three Indian nationals, stand as clear evidence of America's ongoing policy of armed robbery and State piracy. We extend our sympathies to the families and friends of the slain Indian sailors and offer our sincere condolences to the Indian people and government," the statement said.

He further urged the international community to take action against the repeated violations of international norms.

"The international community must hold the United States accountable for its lawless conduct, which continues to threaten global peace and security while endangering the freedom of navigation," the spokesperson added.
