Her situation in life, the character of her father and mother, her own person and disposition, were all equally against her. Her father was a clergyman, without being neglected, or poor and a very respectable man,...and he was not in the least addicted to locking up his daughters. Her mother was a woman of useful plain sense, with a good temper, and, what is more remarkable, with a good constitution. She had three sons before Catherine was born; and instead of dying in bringing the latter into the world, as any body might expect, she still lived on--lived to have six children more--to see them growing up around her, and to enjoy excellent health herself."
I love that last bit about her mother. Very funny - and inside the story, she skewers some of the gothic romance novels of the time, gently, of course.

I'm enjoying your Regency Romance series posts! I was in a history class, too, and I thought it was a fake at first because the teacher (nicknamed "Bootleg" by the students) was famous for making fake movies. When we realized it was real, it only seemed more unreal. I wondered whether this would be it, whether the attack was just part of a massive one about to hit the whole country, whether we were already aiming nuclear strikes in retaliation that would, through mutually assured destruction, cause human life on Earth to basically end. It wasn't until later that afternoon, when I realized that the human race was going to survive the day, that I really saw the horror and tragedy of what still had happened.

And it is very much like the JFK assassination was for my parents. But if you really didn't enjoy it, you should pass your comments along to the festival staff. They are receptive and intent on making this a great festival. This was the third year it's been held and the first year at the college.

Hmm--no, I can't say that I do. I've certainly run into a number of librarians who looked down on my choice of reading material but most of them know it's my fluff compared to other stuff I'm reading and discussing. And some of the worst have their own reading habits people find unusual: scifi, comics, etc.

I figure if they can lose time playing WoW and pretending to cast spells, I can lose it reading love stories. And I try to avoid the raunchier ones. Got into some of those at my FPOW and found some of them just a little too graphic. I'll stick to the euphemisms :-p

Do you find that other librarians are the most, um...

Do you find that other librarians are the most, um, judgmental about the fact that you read romance novels? We have two branches, run by one Head Librarian, who can be spotted checking out books as well as doing more managerial work. It's wonderful - I worked as an assistant at the library quite a bit over the past two years, and our Head Librarian is very aware of front-desk issues. It's also nice that frequent patrons recognize and can talk to her. (Of course, in a small town, that tends to happen anyway . . .)
