apid tooling promises to be a powerful solution in the quest to develop better products faster. In the future, rapid tooling will commonly be used to slash the time for the delivery of components in production intent materials.
Presently, there are barriers to the broad acceptance and application of rapid tooling. However, if the definition of rapid tooling is expanded, it can be a powerful and beneficial tool.
Rapid Tooling Defined
The original, and most accurate, definition of rapid tooling is: A 3D CAD-driven process that generates tooling inserts in a layer-by-layer (additive) process for the production of components in end-use materials. In simpler terms, this means building tools from a rapid prototyping process. In the past few years, the definition of rapid tooling has become broader and somewhat unclear:
Any process, technique or technology that significantly reduces the delivery of a tool for the production of components in end-use materials. Translated, this means cutting an aluminum or steel tool can be considered rapid tooling.
When the search for a rapid tooling solution begins, it is common to use traditional tooling techniques as the benchmark. The goal becomes the replication of all the quality of a cut tool while slashing the delivery time and expense. With these standards, the options become limited. These imposed limitations can make it best to seek out a tool shop that is extremely fast and efficient at building cut tools in aluminum or steel. In the evaluation of projects, Accelerated Technologies often finds that a machined tool is a far superior solution. It is not hard to imagine, that in the near future an entire house will be manufactured by an LOM machine or other RP processes directly. Such a notion is exciting and will revolutionize the building industry. Rapid tooling is a powerful process that can definitely make the building process faster, cheaper, and better.

These points are like pre-paid interest on a loan that a borrower takes out for a new home, with each point equalling to 1% of the total principal amount of the loan. Origination points are used to pay for the costs of obtaining the loan in the first place. They are much less popular than discount points, as they do not provide borrowers with any valuable benefits and are not tax deductible. Borrowers are therefore better off trying to get a loan that does not require them to acquire these kinds of points.

Is Las Vegas a Breeding Ground for Terrorists?

Even though there are many people who insist that the Mexican and Canadian borders are too open of places in order to allow terrorists to come into the United States, but what about the people and terrorists that are already living in the United States? Indeed, you can be assured that there are Islamic terrorists that have already entered the United States. Some people contend that Las Vegas is the perfect place for these criminals to hide out, but others suggest that Las Vegas is simply too busy of a place to attract any sort of terrorist activity whatsoever. Nevertheless, it is always possible that terrorists are living and breathing among us, and here are just some of the reasons that many people believe that Las Vegas is a breeding ground for terrorists:

The Perfect Place to Hide

Even though Las Vegas, just like New York City, seems like it would be the exact opposite of a place for terrorists to hide it is actually the very opposite and there are plenty of would-be terrorists that are already hiding out in New York City. Because of this, though, why wouldn't Las Vegas be the perfect place to hide? There are literally millions of people gambling and filling up spots in the casinos that terrorists would absolutely have no clue that they were being watched. In addition, the feeling that many people get when going to Las Vegas casinos is the fact that they feel like one small fish in the sea. Because of these feelings and comforts also, there are many people who feel that Las Vegas would be the perfect place to hide a cell of inter-connected terrorist groups planning to attack on the United States' soil.

What No One Knows

Just as there are millions of people who attend the Las Vegas casinos each and every day, there are also so many of these people that just have no idea how security works in Las Vegas. According to the United States' Department of Homeland Security, there are plenty of ways in which they can keep an eye on whoever has checked into the hotel and whoever is currently playing on the Craps table. Aside from common information that can be obtained, many of the authority figures of the federal government are now relying on high tech information in order to able not only recognize people's faces, but to also recognize facial expressions that may be codes and signs for other meanings.

As mentioned, there are plenty of federal authorities already keeping an eye on the many people who participate in the Las Vegas casinos. There are also plenty of these federal authorities that believe that Las Vegas could truly be a breeding ground for terrorists. On the other hand, with all the security measures in place they have failed to capture anyone of real significance who has big ties to any of the terrorist networks.

All in all, though, it may be possible that those who are engaging in terrorist activities are staying among the common folks and wealthy people of the Las Vegas culture. However, it is very doubtful that many of these so-called terrorist will get away with any of their activities if security is as tight as it is made out to be. In the end, though, it seems as thought it only appears to be one big hoax and worry for nothing because Las Vegas is certainly protected and can guard itself against terrorists that try to attack!

Romantic Birthday Ideas with you Spouse

If you are like most people then you are probably thinking that you birthday is just one more year to chalk up to the rest of your life. Although if you're married and it's your birthday then something definitely needs to be said about the romantic factor. Whoever you are married to there always needs to be romance in your marriage with any special occasion and your birthday is the perfect chance to have one of the best times of your life with your spouse. A lot of times spouses celebrate each other's birthdays in the beginning of their marriage, but oftentimes birthdays just turn into a dull and boring occasion throughout the marriage. This should not happen. If it has already happened to you then it's time to stand up and put that zing back into your marriage while celebrating your birthday. Here are a few ideas to make it happen:

Traditional Birthday Dinner

We've all heard about the birthday ritual of choosing a place to go out to eat on your birthday, but if you are looking for a romantic time to celebrate yours or your spouse's birthday then there is nothing better then celebrating the occasion with a romantic birthday dinner. It doesn't necessarily have to be homemade, but it sure is a whole lot more romantic if it is! Try cooking up a couple steaks, barbequed ribs, or your favorite meal along with a candle-lit scene to bring you two into the mood. The dinner can be followed by your favorite dessert and then a more romantic dessert that's shared by the couple.

Take your Spouse Out

There are plenty of ways to be romantic on your spouse's birthday. For example, you can get them the birthday gift that they've been wanting for quite some time and they'll be sure to appreciate it. However, couples should definitely go beyond the gift-giving event of the birthday and do something totally special and out of the ordinary. Going to the movie theater is always romantic, but there are more creative ways to have a romantic time out also. For example, you could have a romantic picnic in the park followed by a round of ice skating. Going to the zoo is also something that many couples usually don't do and a birthday is the perfect occasion to do something like this!

If you have tried all of these suggestions and have found that none of them have worked then it's time to ask your spouse directly what he or she wants to do. Having a romantic time on your birthday definitely is a two-way street, a street in which both individuals should discuss what they want to do.

Communication is a large part of having the romantic occasion that's being talked about and who knows how to have a romantic birthday better than the two in love? Nevertheless, though, romantic dinners, candle-light dinner, as well as a romantic occasion out on the town are all sure-fire ways to light up the night and romance in a marriage!

Bio Blogs #16 Halloween Edition

Everyday science
This time we have interesting post on day-to-day scientific life in three categories: issues of scientific communication, bioinformatics workspace and software tips and news.
Michael Barton from Bioinformatics Zen posted three stories explaining how web technologies may improve scientific communication, plus he shared his thoughts about developing skills that are rarely taught in a grad school. “As for your research, start a blog”, he writes, “(…) Try alternative communication formats, post videos on your research, persuade other members in your lab as well.” As we speak about alternative formats, you’ve probably heard about Second Life and SciFoo virtual talks. If SL still feels awkward to you, Sandra Porter from Discovering Biology in a Digital World wrote a gentle introduction to attending a Second Life poster session.
From Neil Saunders we have an excellent tutorial (part I and part II) about setting up and using SVN and Trac for tracking bioinformatics projects. In theory, scientists should be able to trace anything they release (not only source code) back to its origins and Neil has ready to implement solution. As Paulo Nuin from Blind.Scientist found Trac a little bit clumsy, he recommended svn-time-lapse instead, since it’s easier to compare two versions of the file (see part I and part II). You can test both approaches with your new project inspired by Tiago from Perfect Storm – he started an interesting journey with Scala for bioinformatics.
There are around 10 new software releases every hour at SourceForge.net. Fortunately pool of scientific software is more manageable. This month’s highlights are: good news from Noel O’Boyle – Frog developers donated their code to OpenBabel (that means flexible command-line converter from 1D/2D descriptors of molecules to 3D structure in a near future), tip from Andrew Perry about starting Qutemol, simple but impressive molecular visualizer, under linux (hint: use Windows version), reports from Animesh Sharma on the new versions of Biopython and Bioconductor.
Outside these categories there is a post of Jason Isheng Tsai from Paradoxus (good timing, only hour and a half before finishing this post) about his usual day in front of a computer. If you do have friends who are not scientists (do you? ) asking about your work, you can point them there, although I have a feeling that they may not understand the irony in a difference between “grant version” and “real version” of the scientific work…
Trends, predictions and analysis
October started with announcement from IBM Research about software for 3D visualization of patient’s medical records. Bertalan Meskó from ScienceRoll posted his interview with Andre Elisseeff, who leads the healthcare projects at IBM Zurich Research Lab. Elisseeff says they got very positive feedback from physicians that used this “Google Earth for human body”. Maybe this and other health-related news were inspiration for Pedro Beltrao to write a brilliant story about possible future of personalized genomics. Frightening stuff.
Managing data across therapeutic programs can be challenging, not only because of their amount, but also because of difficulties in sharing information stored in there. Deepak Singh posted his thoughts on a topic of persistent context, this is maintaining context of the information along with the information. For me the eye-opening sentence was: “If you are storing relationships, i.e. your queries, and treating them as pieces of data, you are essentially capturing relationships, and the semantic web provides an elegant framework to do so.”
Open access
I am happy to point you to a post of Michael Kuhn about Max-Planck Society canceling its subscription to Springer journals. Reason for canceling? Way too expensive subscription (if paying individually for each downloaded paper is considered cheaper, such subscription is too expensive). Can you see a smile on faces of publishers of open-access journals?
If this issue resonate with you, have a look at the Evolgen highlight – an editorial in PLoS Biology entitled “When Is Open Access Not Open Access?” (–important update– see Pedro’s comment to that editorial), and point your colleagues who are not yet aware of significant changes we are facing to screencast of Konrad Förstner, explaining what the open science is all about.
Research highlights
One of the things I found interesting this month were two posts of Ian York from Mystery Rays from Outer Space. He wrote about publication demonstrating a potent epitope from HIV that emerged from a frame-shifting event and raised a question if this is a major phenomenon. As far as I know, out-of-frame sequences were not yet thoroughly analyzed – is it a chance for smart bioinformatics?

Showcase of Fresh Anatomical Tattoos

People have been sending me quite a lot of anatomy tattoos over the past few months and I finally finished putting together a showcase of all the anatomical ink. Where possible I’ve tried to include the person’s story/explanation of their tattoos.
I also started another group on Flickr called Anatomy Tattoos to expand the collection and have a place for people to submit their own anatomical tattoos. Definitely worth a look!

Anatomical heart tattoo submitted by David Cundy. It looks like the tattoo artist just effortlessly sketched the tattoo directly on his chest.

The significance behind the tattoo is similar to others on the site in that following a scary hospital stay, which can make one think deeply on life, death and the transient body I found an unexpected inspiration to tattoo the heart as the central physical life force, symbol of love, housing of the soul and blood pump. Of course the heart is also a long running theme in stylised form in tattoos so I liked the idea of un-stylising it and going for an anatomically correct version. The Tattoo was done by Mantas http://www.mantas-tattoo.com/ in Brighton U.K. and I have to say this man is an expert he completed it in fine detail in about an hour and a half – I’m tempted to have lungs next but maybe less is more!

Here’s the tattoo that I got on my honeymoon last April. I’m normally pretty straight-laced and I decided that I wanted to do one “wild” thing in my life and get a tattoo. So I figured that it should be chosen from a subject matter that I’m passionate about –anatomy. This tattoo was done at Starlight Tattoo in the Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas by Joey. I love the fascinated reaction that most people have towards my tattoo.

That design is my best friend Kelly’s artwork, her little brother Brent is a tattoo artist so he did it for me for free!
The design was originally a print that Kelly did back when we were in college at ECU. When it was time for her class to critique the peice, everyone thought it was creepy and morbid — but that wasn’t her intention with the piece at all, she thought it was sweet.
To me, this design makes me think of not being afraid of death (that wasn’t kellys intention) but that’s what it makes me think of and why i loved it so much.

Famous Diamonds

Among the most well known diamonds is the
Hope. This 45.52 carat steel blue diamond
is currently on display at the Smithsonian.
The legends of the ill-fortune and curse
bestowed on the possessor of the Hope
Diamond are many. This diamond was
donated to the Smithsonian in 1958. The
Hope was originally a rather flat, blocky
110-carat rough.

The Dresden Green stands out among the
natural colored diamonds. It is the largest
green diamond in the world weighing
40.70 carats. This diamond is historic, large
and has a natural green color with a slight
blue overtone. These facts make it virtually
priceless.

The Conde Pink is a pear shaped and
weighs 9.01-carats. This pink diamond was
once owned by Louis XIII.

The Tiffany Yellow diamond a beautiful
canary-yellow octahedron weighing 287.42
in the rough (metric) carats discovered in
either 1877 or 1878 in South Africa. The
gem after cutting boasts the extraordinary
weight of 128.54 carats. And until recently,
was the largest golden-yellow in the world.

The Koh-I-Noor ( Mountain of Light ) is now
among the British Crown Jewels. This
diamond weighs 105.60 carats. First
mentioned in 1304, it is believed to have
been once set in Shah Jehan‘s famous
peacock throne as one of the peacocks eyes.

The Agra is graded as a naturally colored
Fancy Light Pink and weighs 32.34 carats.
It was sold for about 6.9 million in 1990.
Since this sale, it has been modified to a
cushion shape weighing about 28.15 carats.

The Transvaal Blue is pear cut. This blue
diamond weighs 25 carats. It was found in
the Premier Diamond Mine in Transvaal,
South Africa.

The Great Chrysanthemum was discovered
in the summer of 1963, in a South African
diamond field. This 198.28-carat fancy
brown diamond appeared to be a light
honey color in its rough state. However,
after cutting, it proved to be a rich golden
brown, with overtones of sienna and burnt
orange.

The Taylor-Burton Diamond is a pear-shaped
69.42 carat diamond. Cartier of New York
purchased this diamond at an auction in
1969 and christened it "Cartier." The next
day Richard Burton bought the diamond
for Elizabeth Taylor. He renamed it the
"Taylor-Burton”. In 1978, Elizabeth
Taylor put the diamond up for sale.
Prospective buyers had to pay $2,500
each to view the diamond to cover the costs
of showing it. Finally, in June of 1979, the
diamond was sold for nearly $3 million dollars.

Auto Parts for Necessary Repairs

Repairing your automobile can always cause certain headaches that are just not needed. Even though there are professional car repair shops that will help you repair your car, they will also charge a pretty penny for the work that they do. In fact, most of the time the price that people pay for car repairs in professional shops does not come from the auto parts themselves, but is the labor charges that have to be paid. One great alternative to professional car services that repair your automobile is to do it yourself. There are thousands of individuals who dislike taking their car to auto shops, which is the main reason that they do most of their repairs themselves. On the other hand, if you don't mind getting a little dirty there are always simple options of repairing your car yourself. Here are some of the more common jobs that need to be done from time to time and the auto parts that you'll need for them.

Changing Your Brakes

This is a project that usually has to be done at least every other year. Of course, it depends totally on the type of car you have as well as how old the car is that you're driving. But brakes get worn down just as any of the other auto parts do, and they need changing from time to time. Before you start out on the journey to change your brakes, the first thing that you'll need is the equipment. But how much do you need to change? Many people simply think that they'll need only the brake pads; however, it's important to consider how long one has been driving with their brakes worn down in the first place.

For a total brake change, the auto parts that one is going to need are the brake pads, discs, and calipers. Depending on whether or not the rotors are worn down also, you may need those. Also, most cars come with a set of brake shoe sets that you will need to replace as well as everything else on the list of auto parts that you'll need.

Changing Oil and Fuel Filters

This is a whole other different job in itself and requires a different set of auto parts. Many professional auto repair shops will charge about $30 to perform an oil and oil filter change, and a fuel filter change costs about $50. However, one can do these jobs easily and simply by themselves with only paying for the auto parts. In order to change the oil filter the only thing that needs to be done is to buy the oil filter itself, which usually only costs around $5.00, and change it while you're underneath the car changing your oil. On the other hand, the fuel filter is a little bit more expensive and the process is quite different because it actually usually involves taking off one of the wheels, but one only needs to pay for the auto parts that he or she will need, which is simply the fuel filter itself.

There are plenty of other simple repair procedures that can be done all by yourself. It's definitely not necessary to quickly run to an auto shop every time that every little thing needs to be done. By doing the work by yourself you not only save the cost of labor, but you also only need to pay for the auto parts that you use!

Remodeling Ideas for your Home

If you are a long-time homeowner then chances is that you may have become bored with the current way that your house looks on the inside as well as the outside. This may happen because of a divorce, empty nest syndrome, or you simply would like to update the way that your house looks and feels. All of these are reasons that people use to actually decide that they need to invest in remodeling their house.

But when it comes right down to it, many homeowners are actually confused at what projects they should and shouldn't take on. For example, a homeowner that feels completely lost about remodeling their house may see multiple projects that need to get done. On the other hand, all of those projects may be too large to do at once. So the real question of remodeling your house becomes: how should I prioritize the changes that I want to make during the renovation of my home? Once homeowners are able to answer that question then only then are they able to finally make great changes the way that they want to see them. Here are a few ideas about the way that you should remodel your house, though, from top priority to bottom:

1. Kitchen

Believe it or not, the kitchen is actually a room in the house where many people decide to start off first. In fact, the kitchen is the room where you'll receive the most value in your home after you actually take on the remodeling. In other words, when you decide to sell your home the kitchen will be the place where your home's value will increase the most after you remodel. A couple ideas for remodeling the kitchen, though, include knocking out a couple of the walls in order to make it larger and more efficient, as well as re-doing the cabinets in order to increase the storage space. However, if you don't want to make the kitchen larger then you can simply re-construct the floors as well as the hardwood counter tops.

2. Basement

The basement is the second place that you should start remodeling. There are actually many issues to think about before remodeling the basement, but the biggest of all depends on whether you currently have a finished or unfinished basement. If you have an unfinished basement then the value of your home will increase tremendously if you decide to finish it. Some ideas for the basement include adding a small recreation room, making a specific storage room, as well as adding various other storage spaces. There are many couples who go to Las Vegas in order to get married and tie the knot. On the other hand, there are just as many couples that don't necessarily tie the knot here, but still choose to experience the Las Vegas magic by keeping their honeymoon here. There are plenty of things to do, though, while on your honeymoon, however, the most important thing to consider about a Las Vegas honeymoon is the place that you'll be staying. Since your honeymoon will probably be defined by the hotel and experience that you have while visiting Las Vegas, it's important to have that honeymoon suite and experience-of-a-lifetime! Many people and couples say that they can truly experience the magic while staying in one of the romantic honeymoon getaways, and here are some of the opportunities to do just that when looking for a Las Vegas honeymoon experience:

The Paris Hotel

Everyone always says that Paris is the city for lovers, so what better what to spend your honeymoon than shacked up in a Las Vegas hotel that's designed to be just as the Eiffel Tower building in true Paris? Indeed, the Paris Hotel is literally a 50-story copycat replica of the Eiffel Tower in famous Paris, but it also has all of the romantic options that come with it. For couples who want to experience the full-on honeymoon there are plenty of all-inclusive romantic packages that include full room service for two, honeymoon breakfasts, champagnes, chocolates, as well as private access to a Jacuzzi and plenty more experiences that honeymoon couples desire for their night alone!

The MGM Grand Hotel

How to Safeguard Your Financial Life

Several financial planners would agree that one of the
foremost and important steps that you should take to
protect your financial stability is to set aside funds
as emergency reserve. The concept that you have the
fund for emergency and unexpected events is enough to
help you stay away from using your credit card and
drown yourself in debt.

How to Get Started

Everyone must stash a little extra cash in case of
emergencies. However, how much money should you keep?
Although the topic of exactly how much money is needed
for your emergency fund is open to debate, the minimum
amount should be enough to cover your expenses for
daily living for at least three months. It is also
wiser to save for six months though most financial
planners agree on a full year worth of cash.

Your personal circumstances and what it takes to
provide you with a peace of mind are the elements to
help you determine just how cautious you want to be.
If for instance, you have well-off parents who have
always been supportive and willing to help you in a
financial crisis, an emergency fund for three months
will be sufficient. On the other hand, if you had
