Metallica was formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and singer/guitarist James Hetfield. They hired Ron McGovney to play bass and Dave Mustaine to play guitar and began playing live shows. After recording a demo they secured a record deal, and by this time McGovney and Mustaine had been replaced by Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett. Their first album, Kill 'Em All, was released in 1983.

Poison is a hard rock band that formed in the Los Angeles area in the early 1980s. Most of the band members were originally from Pennsylvania, and moved to Los Angeles. The original band consisted of Bret Michaels on vocals and guitar, Rikki Rockett on drums, Bobby Dall on bass, and Matt Smith on lead guitar. This lineup was originally known as Paris. After years of living in poverty in L.A., Smith returned to Pennsylvania, but the other members carried on. They recruited guitarist C.C. Deville, and changed their name to Poison. The group was very heavy into makeup, and could be considered the 'glammiest' band ever.

Def Leppard is a hard rock/heavy metal band that formed in the U.K. in the late 1970s. The original band consisted of Joe Elliott on vocals, Rick Savage on bass, Steve Clark on lead guitar, Pete Willis on guitar, and Tony Kenning on drums. Kenning left the band prior to the recording of their first EP, and hired session drummer Frank Noon for the recording of "The Def Leppard EP", released in the late 1970s. They held auditions for a drummer afterward, and finally hired a then young Rick Allen. They first called themselves 'Deaf Leopard', but changed the spelling shortly after.

Motley Crue is a hard rock/heavy metal band from the Los Angeles area. They first formed in 1980 when bassist Nikki Sixx (born Frank Ferrano) met drummer Tommy Lee (born Tommy Lee Bass) in another band. Their search for a guitarist led them to Recycler magazine, and an ad posted by guitarist Mick Mars (born Bob Deal). Tommy Lee suggested that they hire a high school acquaintance, Vince Neil (born Vince Neil Wharton), as their vocalist, and the original lineup was completed.

Kiss is a band from New York City that first formed in 1973. Bassist Gene Simmons and guitarist Paul Stanley had just left a band called Wicked Lester, and were looking for new members to play with. They acquired drummer Peter Criss when they responded to an ad that he left in Rolling Stone Magazine, stating "Drummer willing to do anything to make it". They later hired guitarist Ace Frehley, after he walked into their loft wearing one red shoe and one orange shoe. He began playing as they were talking to Bob Kulick, older brother of Bruce Kulick. Simmons and Stanley were prepared to offer the guitarist position to Kulick, but Frehley's image and guitar sound was just what the band was looking for, and the original lineup was finally completed.
They began by playing small clubs in New York City. They later started wearing their trademark makeup after seeing Alice Cooper in concert. After months of continuous club dates, they landed a record deal with the newly-formed Casablanca Records. Their first album, Kiss, was released in February, 1974. The horrific album cover of the members decked out in makeup scared potential fans, and critics thought Kiss was a joke. But what really increased Kiss' popularity was their live shows. Simmons, as the demon, would spit blood and breathe fire at every show, and set his hair on fire several times, which concert-goers thought was part of the show. Songs from the first album, including "Deuce" and "Firehouse", became classic hits, and pushed album sales to gold.

The Bee Gees were a singing trio of brothers : Barry , Robin , and Maurice Gibb, that became one of the most successful musical acts of all time. They were born on the Isle of Man to English parents, lived in England and moved to Brisbane , Australia during their childhood years, where they began their musical careers. Their worldwide success came when they returned to England and signed with producer Robert Stigwood , The group's name is derived from the initials "B.G.", primarily standing for "The Brothers Gibb." The multiple Grammy Award , winning group was successful for all of its forty years of recording music, but it had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as a harmonic "soft rock" act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and as the foremost stars of the disco music era in the late 1970s. They were best rated band in the world in 1978.No matter the style, the Bee Gees sang tight three-part harmonies that were instantly recognizable; as brothers, their voices blended perfectly, in the same way that The Beach Boys did. Barry sang lead on many songs, and an R&B falsetto introduced in the disco years; Robin provided the clear vibrato lead that was a hallmark of their pre-disco music; Maurice sang high and low harmonies throughout their career. The three brothers co-wrote most of their hits, and they said that they felt like they became 'one person' when they were writing. The group's name was retired after Maurice died in January 2003.It has been estimated that the Bee Gees' record sales total more than 220 million, easily making them part of the list of best-selling music artists Their 1997 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame citation says "Only Elvis Presley , the Beatles , Michael Jackson , Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney have outsold the Bee Gees".

Bon Jovi is a hard rock band that first formed in New Jersey in the early 1980s. Lead vocalist Jon Bon Jovi recorded a song, "Runaway", in 1982, then signed to Mercury Records. "Runaway" became the first single from their debut album, Bon Jovi (1984), and it charted as the band's first hit. The followup album, 7800 Fahrenheit (1985), featured the hit "In And Out Of Love".success came with their third album, Slippery When Wet , released in 1986. Hits included "Livin' On A Prayer" and "You Give Love A Bad Name". In 1988, New Jersey was released, and featured the hits "Bad Medicine" and "I'll Be There For You". This would be the last album from the band for a few years.Bon Jovi split up in 1990, with Jon Bon Jovi and guitarist Richie Sambora releasing solo albums in 1990 and 1991, respectively. The band's fifth album, Keep The Faith (1992), though successful, was met with some criticism.A greatest hits compilation, Croos Road, came out in 1994, and featured three new songs, including the hit "Always". It would be the last album to feature bassist Alec Such. Such was interviewed in a magazine article, stating that Jon Bon Jovi's criticism of his playing was getting to him. Shortly after, Such was fired from the band, though the band denies that it had anything to do with his magazine interview.Bon Jovi released their sixth album, These Days, in 1995. It featured such hits as "This Ain't A Love Song", but overall, the mood on the album was very melancholy.Jon Bon Jovi released his second solo album in 1998, and guitarist Richie Sambora followed up with his second solo album in 1999. Nonetheless, this album helped give new life to Bon Jovi, and was their first album in eight years to receive both significant radio and video airplay. The band was elated that they had somehow sailed past the 'alternative craze' of the 1990s, without losing most of their loyal fanbase. Later that year, keyboardist David Bryan released his first solo album, composed of instrumental piano tracks.As a reward to their loyal fans, Bon Jovi released their first live album, One Wild Night : Live 1985-2001, in 2001, which captured the band during some of their best live shows around the world. A year later, Bounce (2002), reached #2 on the Billboard charts, while the single, "Everyday", charted in the top 40.For their next album, Bon Jovi decided to rerecord their greatest hits as acoustic-tinged ballads. The resulting album, This Left Feels Right (2003), sold well, though some fans and critics considered it an awkward album.. The single, "Who Says You Can't Go Home", was redone with country singer Jennifer Nettles, and turned Bon Jovi into the first rock band to have a hit on country music charts. This milestone would also be the inspiration for the band's next album.The album, Lost Highway (2007), was the first Bon Jovi album to be released exclusively in the country music market. Bon Jovi seemed to leave their glory days in the 80's far behind with this release. They are currently on tour to support the album. Though Bon Jovi has grown and matured in the past 25 years, they continue to be one of the most successful rock bands in the world.

The Police are a three-piece rock band consisting of singer/bassist Sting (Gordon Sumner), guitarist Andy Summers, and drummer Stewart Copeland. The band became globally popular in the early 1980s, playing a style of rock that was influenced by jazz, reggae, and punk, music. Their 1983 album Synchronicity was number one in the UK and the US and went Platinum eight times in the US. The band broke up in the mid-1980s, but reunited in early 2007 with the announcement that they are undertaking a huge, international world tour dubbed The Police Reunion Tour from the middle of that year on until early 2008, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of their hit single "Roxanne" and also, to a lesser extent, that of their formation as a group
