Microsoft Office 2010: the history

Back in the 1990s, Microsoft Office still seemed new and exciting. Users were amazed by its powers: it highlighted typos, suggested grammatical changes and automatically recognised when you needed an accent on a foreign word or needed to renumber a PowerPoint list. It could do your sums for you and create graphs from sets of figures. It could even supply presentation handout notes as aides-memoires.
Back then the Office productivity suite of tools was almost universally used and widely admired (a few security exploits notwithstanding). Encouraged by the praise heaped on what was to become the most successful program of its type, Microsoft added more and more features and bulked out the number of programs and variety of editions customers could choose from. The result: too much choice and too much bloat, cried commentators.

In the days of Windows XP, a feature-laden copy of Office Professional was accused of taking up far more than its share of system resources. With less than 1GB of RAM powering the programs on the average home PC, the dictionaries and templates, Clippy the assistant and the context-based help began to rile consumers who simply wanted to type a letter or fill in their household expenses spreadsheet.
Microsoft responded to the criticism by reining in Office’s intrusions. Microsoft Office 2007 saw the introduction of a ribbon menu that made it easier to get to the items related to your current task, rather than interrupting you to check that you are doing things Microsoft’s way. Intended to be a less overblown take on Office, however, the 2007 version was berated for making unnecessary alterations to a largely successful interface. Many people never upgraded from Office 2003, while plenty still use earlier versions.

With Office 2010, Microsoft hopes to find us all on the same electronic page. It’s cut back on the number of versions, with home and non-business users offered a single Office Home and Student Edition. It’s given the constituent programs in Office a uniform look (Outlook’s design lagged behind the other main programs), it’s made a concerted effort to add web-based elements into the mix and it’s allowed plenty of time for both closed beta testers and the general public to try out Office 2010’s various features and provide feedback on them.
To this end, Office 2010 has been available as a free beta download for the past six months. That’s given Microsoft plenty of time to gather valuable feedback from users about what does and doesn’t work, and to iron out any glitches that may have been uncovered.
In mid-April 2010, Microsoft announced that it had completed this process and was ready to start rolling out its office suite in time for a June launch. But the trial version was still available as we went to press, so it’s not too late to try before you buy.
As you’ll learn from our reviews over the following pages, we think many readers will want to become Microsoft Office 2010 users. Should you agree, we’ve got some advice on how to go about doing so for free or on the cheap.

Adobe Creative Suite CS4 Design Premium

Adobe CS4 Design Premium bundles a great Flash update, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat 9, at a relative discount; features improved integration among similar interfaces.
The bad: Updates to Photoshop and InDesign don't justify the upgrade for most users; excludes audio editing; heavy-duty applications take long to install, are hard to learn, and hog resources; costly personal tech support.

The bottom line: Adobe CS4 Design Premium contains nearly every tool for editing digital images and layouts for print and the Web, as well as for crafting interactive animation and desktop apps. If you don't need video editing, pick this over the Master Collection and save $700.

The $1,799 Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium package (between $599 to $799 to upgrade) is built for print and Web page designers, animators, and graphics pros. Key components include the updated InDesign for print, Dreamweaver and Fireworks for dynamic Web design, Flash for animation, plus Photoshop and Illustrator for pixel and vector graphics. Acrobat Professional 9, which now integrates Flash content, is also here. This is a terrific toolbox for those who don't need video tools enabled by Premiere, AfferEffects, and Soundbooth in the $2,500 Master Collection. With Creative Suite 4, Adobe has unified the interfaces of all the applications for a more seamless experience. Work-space adjustments to CS4 include panels that are more nimble than its predecessor's, and handy pull-down menus with preset styles that enable you to shift among work space layouts quickly. A corporate ad department, for instance, could use this software to create a campaign that repurposes the same images and layouts for formats as varied as magazines, posters, t-shirts, Web sites, online games, desktop apps, and mobile devices.
Setup and interface
The Web abounds with complaints about Adobe's installer and updater, and most are justified. Every Windows application installer suggests you close any running applications, but you can usually ignore it and 99 percent of the time everything works out fine. Adobe forces you to close your browser and all Microsoft Office applications, because many of the programs in the suite--primarily Acrobat--spread octopuslike tentacles throughout your working environment. That's pretty appalling in and of itself, but in addition to wasting a large chunk of time installing, you can't do anything else but play Solitaire while it's happening. And as before with the updater, you'll get to relive this delightful close-your-apps-or-else experience on a regular basis. Plus, the installation "progress" bar bears no relation to reality whatsoever, with its two steps forward and one step back movement.
Unfortunately, it took us nearly two hours to install the Adobe Master Collection CS4 on Windows Vista and XP machines (We didn't test CS4 thoroughly on a Mac). That's still less time than with CS3, and installing the smaller Design Premium will likely take less time. Adobe's custom installation still lets you pick and choose which components to embrace or reject, but there's no mechanism for migrating your settings and all your custom tools from CS3 and earlier.
To install Creative Suite 4 Web Premium, Windows users need at least Windows XP SP2 or Vista, with a 2GHz-or-faster processor. The necessary available disk space is 9.1GB (and will be perhaps more during installation). Mac users will need a PowerPC G5 or Intel-based machine with at least OS X v10.4.11, as well as 1GB of RAM and 11.2GB of available disk space. For both Windows and Macs, installation comes via a DVD. The display must be 1,280x900, with 32-bit video card and 16MB of VRAM. Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0 compatibility may also be necessary. These system requirements are less stringent than for those suites involving video, such as Production Premium and the Master Collection.
Features

Work space adjustments throughout CS4 include panels that are more nimble than its predecessors, and handy pull-down menus with preset styles that enable you to shift among work space layouts quickly. Enhanced integration speeds up the workflow if you're using several applications for the same or related projects.
If you rely on Adobe software for print layout work alone, we'd recommend the less expensive Design Standard package, or not upgrading from CS3 or earlier at all. On the other hand, if you need to make round trips among software for print and interactive designs, CS4 is worthwhile, especially for the new animation model in Flash. Dreamweaver beefs up tools for CSS sites and feels more stable than its predecessors. Integration among the applications includes the capability to export Fireworks designs as CSS, then bringing them into Dreamweaver.

During the past few weeks, I have been testing out and “kicking the tires”, on Grass Valley’s Edius 6. Edius was originally created by Canopus, and was bought out by Grass Valley. They have continued to improve upon its structure providing a large selection of codec support. Before I dive into my review, I would like to thank Grass Valley for graciously providing me with this copy of Edius 6.

(Note: This version of Edius 6 is a PC version.) Initial installation was simple enough, using the provided CD with an .exe file. A surprise in the packaging was the inclusion of the USB key. This USB key is similar to Avid’s dongle for security. Basically what this means, Eduis will not run without the USB key plugged into the machine. The key must be plugged in before launching the application or nothing will work. A nice security feature when editing on several machines, I will go into that later.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

Now that Adobe is heavily locked into a strategy of suites rather than individual applications, most of the company's software gets a revision at the same time. So whilst much of the excitement has been about Photoshop CS4 and its alleged GPU acceleration, Adobe's video apps have new versions as well. This week we look at Adobe's workhorse video editor, Premiere Pro CS4.

As the oldest video editing app on the PC platform, Premiere has an illustrious history. The switch to Premiere Pro accompanied a complete change of the codebase, but the interface has simply evolved. So CS4 doesn't look significantly different from CS3, although it does have a couple of important innovations. The New Project dialog no longer sets an overall format, just your preferred capture configuration. This is because individual sequences within a project can now each have their own base format. This will come in handy if you shoot with a variety of disparate camcorders. You can edit each natively, then nest the sequences together.

But the most significant development ‘under the hood' is that, like Adobe Premiere Elements 7, AVCHD files are now supported. Whilst this is predominately a consumer format, Panasonic in particular has been backing it with professional models, such as the AG-HMC151, which we will be reviewing next week. Consumer models have also reached a level where they could well be called upon for occasional shoots. So Adobe has added AVCHD just in the nick of time.

The delay seems to have been worthwhile, though, as Adobe's implementation is very slick indeed. Editing is extremely fluid. Naturally, frame rates drop more rapidly than with HDV as you add effects and layers, but it's still the most responsive AVCHD editing we've experienced yet. This isn't the only new format support added, either. Premiere Pro can now edit footage from the Red One, Panasonic's P2 cards, and Sony's XDCAM EX and HD, which covers pretty much every professional tapeless format currently available.

Corel Video Studio X3WHAT'S NEW
Before we get too far into this review, I'd suggest going back and reading my review of Corel VideoStudio Pro X3's predecessor, X2, so you have a frame of reference when I start throwing around terms like "illusion of progress."
From the get-go, you can tell that Corel went back to the drawing board for the new version. The interface has changed and is well abstracted, and it at least seems like this part has been majorly improved.
When you get into the advanced editor, you'll find things have radically changed, even progressed, but it's still not as intuitive as I'd like. The essential order of the timelines remains unchanged, and that was one of my biggest complaints: video timelines go in the order of "Video above Overlay above Title," when the exact opposite order would be more logical.
The reason I showed you the advanced mode first was to give you a taste of what's changed with the familiar; the advanced editor looks a lot like VideoStudio X2. What's really new is the easy mode editor.
EASY MODE? NOT SO MUCH
The easy mode has the trappings of something that could be very functional, but it started downhill for me.
The first thing Corel's software does is search your hard drive for media to edit with. Seems sensible. I went ahead and waited a few minutes for the program to index all my stuff, noting that I have nearly a terabyte of usable data on my system because, hey, I work as a videographer. But I didn't want to hold anything against the program, so eventually I just hit "OK."
Once I got into the program's "desktop," I found that the user interface had been largely streamlined and in many ways for the better. I like the look, and going into the import drop box revealed very easy to understand, very visual icons for getting to what you want to get to. So I did the sensible thing and hunted down a folder on my machine that I knew only had a little over four hours of HDV footage in it. I checked the box next to the folder I wanted to add to the library, and presto...
...it didn't show up.
Oh the swirling icon still powered along at the bottom right corner of the window, but none of my material actually manifested in the library. I waited. Nothing showed up. I waited some more. Nothing showed up. The autosearch having trouble getting everything at the beginning? That I could understand. But, frankly, my computer is far too fast for this to take so long.
I went for the Express Edit of the sample video in the program. It took an abnormally long time to load, and didn't offer any visual cue that it was loading until the Express Edit window finally materialized. I was worried I'd already made the program hang.
Here's where Corel's representatives would probably cry foul: I wound up not spending a whole lot of time trying to figure out how to edit video, and a large part of that is because I had such a devil of a time getting my own footage inside the program.
TOO MUCH GLOSS, NOT ENOUGH SUBSTANCE
Someone's going to accuse me for not having enough patience, but the real disappointment here was that it looked like Corel's developers spent a lot of time working on the user interface and experience for the easy mode. They went back to the drawing board and thought a lot about how their prospective users might muddle their way through the software. I respect and admire that. User experience has been a large part of what's kept Apple doing so well, and the hard lesson Microsoft eventually learned and capitalized on with the release of Windows 7.
Unfortunately, things don't seem to be running quite so well under Corel's hood. My computer has a quad core processor running stable at 3.7 GHz, 8GB of memory, and my source video files sit on a striped RAID (you don't need to know what that is other than to understand it's fast and ideal for high definition editing). I have never used any video editing software on my machine that felt less responsive than Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 does.
When I import existing footage into the program's library, it needs to index it and be done with it. It needs to show up yesterday, not make me wait for minutes on end. When you import existing footage in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, the footage shows up immediately in your project window, and then a progress bar at the bottom right side of the window shows the footage itself being indexed for easy access. In an ideal situation you do wait for the video to finish indexing, but you know what? At least the program tells you it is indexing.
Right from the primary library view, Corel's software gives you plenty of ways to export your footage, hitting all the right notes and covering the bases. From the editor proper, you can export to all the same places or even pop your project open in the advanced editor.
These features are all great, useful tools, but they aren't going to do you much good if the software itself is largely unresponsive and you have issues importing existing footage off of your own hard drive.
I'm willing to accept the possibility that I got a bad egg. The beauty of free trials is that someone else can download and pop open the software and maybe even have a better experience than I did. I certainly like the changes made to the interface proper and Corel's efforts to make things simpler for the average user. While they do suggest visiting their website for proper tutorials on how to use it, it seems clear to me the developers were looking to make sure just about anyone could jump in and get cracking.

Basic 3D Software Applications

At the bottom end of the market there are plenty of low cost, easy to use 3D programs. Because of the low cost and small market share, this is a volatile sector, with 3D applications popping into and out of the market quite rapidly. Some of these applications last a little longer than normal, while others vanish without a trace, so don't be surprised if any mentioned here are no longer available by the time you read this! Whatever the name, they all tend to follow the same basic path-making 3D as easy as possible, but without the power and finesse of the more expensive packages.
If you want something for nothing, there are a few freeware versions of 3D packages available. 3D Canvas from amabilis.com is a cut down version of the company's commercial 3D packages. It's a fully functional 3D application but is probably more suited to the intermediate 3D users or keen beginners.
Xara 3D is a typical low end 3D package, still going strong after multiple versions. Costing about $39, it's a PC-only 3D program that won't break the bank but is pretty limited as 3D programs go. Xara is great for quick logos and fun titles, but really that is about it.
Adobe Dimension is a plug-in for illustrator (Mac or PC) that generates rendered 3D objects from illustrator curves and text. Again, it's limited but very simple to use, and for some it's all that is needed.
Although more suited to intermediate users, Amorphium from ElectricImage Inc. is an esy to use 3D program designed to work in a very hands on way. If you want to sculpt 3D objects as if they were lumps of clay then render them very simply, it's a good way to go.
Poser is included here because it is so easy to use, but in fact it's usefulness extends right up to the pro level. It's a 3D character renderer and animator that lets you pose and animate ready-made, high quality 3D figures. It's very powerful, but it's not an all rounder- it does one thing only-but does it very well.

Intermediate 3D Tools

The quality of intermediate 3D software can vary, but there are a few things to bear in mind. Make sure the rendering is up to speed, and examine online galleries of the software, which you can usually find on the developer's site. This will usually give you a good idea of the quality on offer. Most of the programs are available as demo versions, so they can be downloaded for evaluation.
Strata's Strata 3D has a long history and is available for Mac and PC. It's a sturdy if slightly archaic 3D program, but it has found favor with many digital illustrators. It has some good rendering features, including radiosity, which are rare at the price. www.strata3d.com
Pixels is a Mac-only 3D program that offers advanced rendering and animation and robust modeling for a modest cost. It also features a renderer based on the REYES algorithm-the same one used in Pixar's RenderMan software.
Corel's Bryce 3D is an interesting 3D program. It's primarily a landscape rendering application, designed to produce skies, seas, and terrains in a very efficient way. It can be pressed into service as a more general purpose 3D tool, but lacks any serious modeling tools. www.corel.com
One of the best free 3D applications available is Blender. This program is a full featured 3D production package featuring the kinds of tools you'd expect to see in a mid to high end application.
In the development of Dreamscene and Dreamscenes a similar program to Blender was used. The vista dreams project is far more advanced however.

Advanced 3D Software

At the high end level of 3D applications, it's not so much the tools as their implementation that makes the difference, and each 3D application listed here has its own style of working. Some of these applications are costly, seriously powerful, and used for many high-end effects in movies and television.
Newtek's Lightwave 3D is a dual application featuring separate modeler/texturing and animation/lighting/rendering apps. Its quirky interface is deceptively powerful, and it offers one of the best quality renderers out there.
Softimage XSI combines sublime modeling with non-linear animation, scripting, and phenomenal rendering through tight integration with Mental Images' Mental Ray rendering software. It also features an integrated 2D/3D compositor.
Alias's Maya 3D is extremely powerful. Its node-based architecture enables complex animation and rendering linkages to be created and it offers a nonlinear modeling history, plus Mental Ray rendering.
Discreet's 3Ds Max has always been a popular choice. Its design is not as modern as Maya or Softimage but it holds its own, especially in the games production market, and comes with Mental Ray rendering as standard.
Houdini is a fully procedural animation system that takes the node-based architecture to the nth degree. Sublimely powerful, it's not for the faint hearted, but offers the kind of flexibility other applications only hint at.
The full suite of plug-ins for Cinema 4D takes it into the high end. With advanced radiosity rendering, sophisticated character tools, and a GUI based expression system, it's also one of the easiest high-end 3D apps to get to grips with. Key Management Software is often used alongside 3D animation software when designing key profiles.

Using 3D Software...The Basics

When you’re using 3d software there are some things that you should keep in mind so that you end up with the best results. The most important thing is to keep it simple when you’re just learning how to use the software.
You need to recognize that you’re not going to be producing highly detailed projects right from the start. Choose a background that is simple so that you can concentrate on the one subject that you’re working with. You can add a more busy and complicated background after you’re successfully completed your one subject.
Once you’ve decided what your first project is going to be you’ll want to change the settings of the 3d software so that you’re not using the default settings. Remember that it’s the settings of the software that can help to make your project as original as possible. When you stick with the default settings of the 3d software you’re producing something that has essentially been created a thousand times before.
You’ll have to experiment with the 3d software until you get the settings to do what you want them to do. This may mean that you have to lower the setting of reflectivity or color dramatically but the end result of originality will be well worth it. The important thing to remember is not to get frustrated and discouraged when your first projects don’t turn out the way you want them to.
It’s all about learning the software and finding out what it can do for you. Once you master using the 3d software you can add on additional equipment, such as a scanner or a digital camera, and learn how to use these with your software in such a way that you’re creating projects that stretch your skill.
There are several different types of 3d software on the market today so be sure to take your time deciding which one meets your designing needs before you spend what could be a great deal of money for your software.
