R.I.P. Deanna Durbin

Deanna Durbin has died at the age of 91. She was a huge star in the 1930s and 40s. How huge? Well, it's pretty clear that if it weren't for her, Universal Studios would not exist today.

It's a well-known story, but I'll tell it anyway. In 1936 MGM signed two 14-year-old girl singers, Miss Durbin and Judy Garland, and paired them in a short subject called Every Sunday. Deanna sang "opera" and Judy sang "swing.' According to one version of events, Louis B. Mayer told his minions to fire "the fat one," and Durbin was mistakenly let go. I don't really believe the story. It's abundantly clear from watching Every Sunday that neither of those girls could be considered fat, even by Hollywood standards. Nevertheless, MGM dropped Durbin's option and Universal signed her, put her in a movie called Three Smart Girls, and a star was born. Meanwhile, MGM didn't know what to do with Garland and her career took several years to get up to speed. Durbin remained Universal's top draw until her retirement in 1948. When she retired she really retired, no concerts, no comebacks, no retrospectives. .

Not much to say about him yet, as all I really know about him is that he's from Deutschland, but was scouted while vacationing in Australia. Sehr herrlich, nicht wahr?

16-year-old Cody Simpson came to America from his native Australia in 2010, discovered on YouTube and promoted as a baby Bieber. Shortly thereafter, Bieber's management signed him. No longer a baby anything, Simpson has carved out a nice niche for himself, releasing innocuous pop music. Although he has never approached Bieber's level of commercial success (perhaps because he is nowhere near as girly as most teen idols, and more quirky in his handsomeness ) he is sexier than Bieber by far. Unlike The Biebs, no one ever tells Cody Simpson to put his shirt back on.

Mystery Solved

In September I posted photographs of Jorge Padro, and asked the burning question, "What has become of this beautiful boy?" I advanced several ideas that might have explained his absence from the modeling scene, but the real reason was not one that had occurred to me. Jorge has not been modeling full time because he has been busy with the Spanish equivalent of high school. According to Models.com (and would they lie?) Jorge will be relocating to Paris next season to start his career in earnest. Can't wait!

I have adored Simone Nobili for ages, but for some reason I've never done a real post about him. How did I let that happen? I think I was a little late to the game, he kind of snuck up on me, and by the time I was savvy to his charms he was everywhere, and it would have seemed like I was jumping on the bandwagon. Well, I must have reached a tipping point, because I can no longer deny him. Jump I must.

Just in case you are also a little late to the game, I'll fill you in. Simone is from Italy and he's 21 years old. Currently ranked #9 on Models.com's Top 50, and named this year's top male model at Spring/Summer Fashion Week by FashionTV, he has done campaigns for the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, Cavalli, Moschino, and Sisley, and walked for... just about everybody. Not only is he gorgeous, but he speaks Italian, which next to French is the language I most like to hear people speak. I love the fact he wants to be a psychologist when he grows up.

Compared to other male models there seems to be an abnormally large amount of pictures of Simone smiling; a big, generous smile that takes up his whole face.

Have I ever told you that in my opinion it is a person's so-called flaws that make them perfect? I really think that's true. On Simone it is the scar across his left eyebrow. (Sometimes you can see it, other times you can't) Without it he would be just another pretty boy. OK, that's probably not really true, but that scar makes him hotter than the surface of the sun. Bask in his heat.

Happy Birthday To My Fake Boyfriend

Alex Pettyfer, still my fake boyfriend after all these years, celebrates his 23rd birthday today. Despite what the tabloid media reports, he has been in a loving relationship with actress Riley Keough for well over a year. (I try to not hold a grudge.) He will next appear, along with the starriest of all-star casts in Lee Daniels' The Butler, a film that will either be cleaning up at the Oscars next year or a complete trainwreck. In May he will begin filming the lead role in a remake of the eighties schlock classic Endless Love. I must admit that I don't quite know what to make of this. The original film was based upon a very highly regarded novel, but was... how do I put it... not good. So, we'll see how this goes.

What? You thought I'd be writting about Margaret Thatcher? This is how I will always remember Annette Funicello. The Mickey Mouse Club was already a nostalgic remnant of a long distant past when I became acquainted with it through reruns on the local afternoon kiddie show in the mid 1970s. Truth be told, I was immune to some of her more obvious charms, but I always liked her, and I enjoyed living vicariously through her whenever cute boys like Tim Considine went gaga over her on Mickey Mouse Club serials like Spin and Marty and Annette. Later, she was in all those beach party movies with Frankie Avalon, which were a gas, man, but she was not really the main attraction as far as I was concerned. She was a woman of limited talent, but whether she was pushing peanut butter in TV commercials, or turning up on talk shows, she always seemed like sweetheart, which even more that her famous bosum, must have been the key to her success.

Ever since I first stumbled upon this movie on a Saturday night TV broadcast when I was about twelve, Easter Parade has been a favorite holiday tradition of mine. Back in those days if you wanted to see an old movie you were at the mercy of a local TV progammer. There were years when none of the local stations would show Easter Parade , and I had to make due with ABC's annual showing of my second favorite Easter movie, The Ten Commandments, which wasn't about Easter at all. Nowadays, I can watch either of them anytime I want, which is convenient, but I must admit, some of the thrill is gone.

What we have here is a white linen suit, with blue stripes spray painted on it. OK, I wouldn't wear it, but I've seen worse. A lot worse. However, unless you are stranded in the middle of a desert, and are trying to fend off sun stroke, tying your suit coat around your head like an Easter bonnet is just wrong on every level and ought to be avoided.

Before today I had never heard of 18 year old Maciej Musial, nor had I seen his work. I have seen him described as "the Polish Justin Bieber", but that doesn't seem quite right, as Bieber is a singer and Maciej is an actor. Regardless, Maciej seems to be very popular in his native Poland, mostly for his television work, and also, no doubt, because he's a adorable little son-of-a-gun.

Fun fact! He dubs the voice for Billy Unger in the Polish broadcasts of Lab Rats!

I'm convinced that there's a factory in Brazil that pops out beautiful models, twenty four hours a day. Take ~~newly-hatched~~ 17-year-old Cristian Pfingstag here. So far, the only pictures I've found of him are these, taken by Cristiano Madureira for Made In Brazil, but I'm guessing that we will see a lot more of him in the future. I sure hope so.

Steven Chevrin, is just twenty years old (born January 27, 1993 in Saint-Quentin, France) and has been working as a model for only a year, but he has already emerged as a superstar in the industry. Well, duh. Even though he's a bit bulkier than the types I usually go for, there's no denying that young Steven is as close to physical perfection as is possible. Seems like everyone wants to work with him, including Bruce Weber, who featured him in a short film about wrestling which is not homoerotic at all.
