Someone says to you, “I love you.”

Someone says to you, “I love you.”

You hear . . . nothing. Actually you hear something. You hear a little voice in your brain that says, “I’m worthless. You’re only saying you love me because you think you have to.”

Somehow, from the mouths of other people to your ear, all words of blessing and encouragement get tumbled upside down and backward and confirm your suspicions about yourself. You are an abject failure. Unloved. Unlovable. And everyone knows it.

There are hundreds of variations.

“You look nice today.”

Push it through the filter of depression and you get, “Not true. I know I am ugly.”

Or, “You seem to be feeling a little better today.”

This means, “Oh, you don’t want to talk to me anymore.”

This is your brain on depression. And we could add, it is your brain on shame.

If this internal circuitry reversed every word, a loved one could say, “You are really such a jerk,” and you would hear, “I love you.” But it doesn’t work that way. Depression (or shame) corrupts every blessing and leaves the curses in their untouched, pristine form.

You might want to take a few minutes and identify this dastardly filter.

What kind words have other people said to you? What did you actually hear after your depressive, inner-translator did a number on it?

That was a warm-up. Now on to something more lethal.

God says, “I love you.”

You hear, “God loves some people but he could never love me.”

Notice that you didn’t hear, “I don’t love you.” That would be your inner filter doing its usual electronic voodoo and reversing any blessing. With this one, you don’t even feel worthy to hear anything personal from the Lord. So what came out the other side was your own voice, not God’s!

Do you think that, maybe, your wiring is completely messed up and you aren’t hearing God accurately?

“I love you,” becomes “God could never love me.” If someone else did that you would tell her she was crazy. But, somehow, for you, it makes perfect sense.

Is it possible that you are mis-hearing?

How convenient it would be if you could simply say, “Oh, now I get it. It was just a little misunderstanding. God, thank you for clearing that one up. I feel much better now. Now I know that you love me.” But life doesn’t work that way. Instead, against all the evidence, such as the sacrificial death of Jesus on your behalf, and his willingness to tell you, over and over, that he loves you, you stick with what you think you heard, as if the problem was hard-wired.

But we are people who believe that the Spirit has been given and he is much more powerful than we think. He can even open our ears so we can hear, even ears that are mis-wired.

The Spirit does his work, in part, by giving you less confidence in the distortions you believe.

Have you ever said, “Lord, I heard wrong”?

Let’s say you go into the presence of a king – a powerful king. He tells you that he is pleased to put you under his protection. He invites you to live in the castle itself. You respond by fortifying your little shack, which stands a couple miles away.

Here is what you are saying to the king:

You aren’t trustworthy. I don’t believe you really want to invite me into your protection.

You aren’t powerful. I am safer outside the castle grounds. I am safer in my shack.

You are mis-hearing his invitation and proclaiming your independence.

But human beings are intended to live life with humility, first before our King, then before others. Sometimes, because you believe his words are too good to be true, you reject what he says and you trust in yourself. At those times, the way ahead is clear – confess to the king that you didn’t really believe what he said. You could call it repentance. You could call it your entrance back to sanity. Only those who walk humbly before the Lord can truly hear.

Be sure to say it: “Lord, I heard wrong. Help me to hear you correctly.”

And once your ears are open you will hear plenty. For example, take a look at the letter we call 1 John. John, who knew Jesus and lived alongside him, was getting up in years, which meant that he was going to stay on message: Jesus loves, not because we are lovable but because he loves, and he will always love first and love most. Then, as one who knew Jesus’ style well, since Jesus didn’t say “I love you” once but said it over and over, John was happy to repeat himself.

But those reversing filters can quickly return.

Jesus says, “I love you.”

To which your inner voice says, “Not me, I’m not lovable.”

Jesus responds, “But I do love you, not because you are lovable (nobody is) but because I love you.”

Pause on this one. Jesus loves you because he is love (1 John 4:8). He loves you because of who he is, not because of who you are. If you feel unlovable – and who doesn’t – that makes his love for you all the more amazing. The evidence of his love? It is much more than Jesus saying, “I feel all gushy about you.” Instead, “this is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). And, if he died on your behalf, he certainly isn’t going to leave you on you own now.

You have to know that Jesus is not like a mere mortal. In human relationships, our love is way too dependent on how the other person is loveable. When you love others, they love you. When you don’t, they don’t. Jesus, however, is not like other people. When our love for him wavers, he loves us. Therein lies the fatal flaw in your hearing.

So you have your work cut out for you. All new wiring. Get rid of the tangled mess by confessing that you don’t hear, and replace it with a very simple connection: God says it, I believe it. If you want to check to make sure the system is working order, keep track of your relationships with other people. If you turn away from people because you believe you are worthless, then get back to your rewiring. If you notice, even for a minute, that you are facing outward, toward other people, and showing interest in them – showing love – then sit back and enjoy the fine workmanship. And truly hear.

To make your own watercolor valentines, all you need is the following:

He can make all things new. You may think you've really made a mess of things and that there is nothing you can do to get out of that hole. You feel used, dirty and so undeserving of anyone's love, let alone God's. But He has another story. It is perfectly written out, and in that story there is redemption. He can make all things new, and He will if you call upon Him.
Dear child, He is there. Take hold of His hand. There is not one thing that you could do {or things} that could make you undeserving of His love. It is a gift. A beautiful, precious gift to you.

IJM Manila: A Bar Closed Means "No Child Will Ever Have to be Exploited Here Again"

IJM helped police rescue girls who had been trafficked there last year, but the bar had re-opened for business the very next day.

MANILA, THE PHILIPPINES – Late last week, a karaoke bar where minors had been trafficked and sold for sex was permanently closed. "This closure means that no child will ever have to be exploited here again," explained Lawrence Aritao, one of IJM Manila's lawyers.

Local authorities permanently closed a bar that was known to sell minors for sex. IJM helped police rescue girls who had been trafficked there last year, but the bar had re-opened for business the very next day.

In November 2011, nine women and girls were rescued from the bar in a joint rescue operation by IJM and the National Bureau of Investigation, Anti Human Trafficking Division. Although the trafficking survivors were delivered from the abusive bar into freedom, the bar re-opened for business as usual the very next day.

IJM filed a petition with local authorities, requesting that the abusive bar be permanently closed on the grounds that minors were being exploited and sold for sex. On January 26, 2012, the Department of Labor invited IJM to watch as a sign was nailed to the door: The bar was ordered permanently closed for its violation of the Philippines' anti-trafficking law– ending a cycle of violence for good. "The Department of Labor found clear evidence that children were exposed and used in prostitution within the walls of this bar," said Aritao.

Amen! Praise God for such deliverance!

Furthermore, I will be taking a break from blogging start the 4th of February, and so I will have posts automatically post most of the days leading up to February 14th. Even though I will not be on here, I will still except comments. Also, feel free to take my survey if you have any questions concerning anything.

As well as blogger, I am also staying off of Facebook, e-mail, pinterest, twitter and other social networks for 2 months. You’ll see me back on here April 1^st. Any posts you see after the 5^th will be automatically posted ones.

I am staying off of these social networking sites for a few reasons, one: To prove you can survive without Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and a boat load of other social networking sites, and two: I want to strengthen my relationships with my family and friends. When you have more time for your Facebook than your family, it is time to take a break, and third: I would like to have more time to focus on my academic and extracurricular studies. This is an important year for me in high school, and I need to be focusing on my studies more than my social connections.

So as of February 5th, 2012 I will be off of all social networks. I encourage you all to consider spending less time with your computer and more time with your family and friends who truly love you and can give back to you instead of taking your time.

Should you not be spending more time in His word than in seeing the latest “happenings” in your friend’s lives? {Although it is important to be a good friend}

Weekend Findings.

Oh Beautiful for Spacious Skies

Open spaces, long hallways and curtains blowing in the breeze.

Hues of Creams, Blues, and Browns.

Mixing stripes, and words, with different textures.

At home-made, yet spacious touches to the kitchen table, bedside stand or even your clothes.

1. Lovely provence linens. Hand-loomed of natural linen with classic country stripes, our napkins are equally well-suited to pasta in a penthouse or a picnic in the park.

2. Browsing through some little collections, and stumbled upon these adorable teapots. Not sure where they came from, but I like them.

1. Boot designs from JCrew. Love the different textures on the boots as well as the socks.
2. A sea-sailing type of shorts. When spring comes, I am finding me one of these.
3. A very creative, Indian/tribal designed knapsack. Would love to make this.
4. Simple knit dress, striped scarf and thin leather belt. Love the simplicity yet stylishness of this outfit.

Breathe in the breath of life. Jesus Christ.
Take a brisk walk or bike a trail and just talk to God. He is listening always.

I was looking through some pictures the other day, and came across some of my moms photos from her trip to England and Wales this past year. I thought I would edit a few and share some of the highlights of her trip. Although I did not go, I really hope to soon!

They {my mom and sister} visited Jane Austen's home and grave, Rudyard Kipling's home, as well as a few castles both in England and Wales.

Hey Guys!
I know I said I was going to be doing a giveaway soon. And I promise I am. What with the moving and unpacking, plus all my school to do and get caught up on; I will be pretty busy these next couple of days for sure. 1. This is a blog post from a dear friend and sister in Christ of mine. It is about trusting God and being thankful to Him for all the little things He has given us.

2. As I am searching out a college, and speciffically looking at Grove City College, I came upon this photo on their website:

It is a photo of my dad receiving the Jack Kennedy Memorial Alumni Achievement Award in 2006. My whole family was there for the ceremony. It was just really neat to see, and it makes me want to go to Grove City all the more {because my dad went there}.

3. A couple Pintresty items. :) Favorites from this past week, all with a blueish, oldish theme to them.

I am very much in the mood for traveling. Ideas?

Earlier this week as I was working on a school assignment, I came across the old hymn written by Charles Wesley in 1738. And I was just reminded again of how much Christ as truly done for us. It really is a beautiful song, and a beautiful reminder of the Gospel. Of the amazing Grace of God for you and me, that He would send His only Son to shed His blood for us. What an amazing, beautiful concept to take to heart again and again.
