State Champion is a band that personifies the mid-western work ethic; musically that translates to blue collar rock and rugged, sloppy garage-country. The band has spent some time in Chicago but are now based out of Louisville, KY. The sound on Stale Champagne is loose and the recording of is rough and ramshackle in all the right places. When Johannes Buff first contacted us about recording with him for a radio program we were intrigued and a little suspicious. After all, the experience could run the gamut from a closet sized room with a microphone and a half dead laptop running Garage Band to a decent little studio with a console and a tape machine. Johannes assured us it was all on the up and up and that for a small fee we could stay overnight at the studio. A fee? This was getting interesting. What kind of studio charges a fee to sleep there?

Our experiences have run on the seedier side of the tracks and we imagined a broom closet with a cot or a pile of blankets on the floor. We said yes. When we arrived in the vicinity of the studio, we were struck by the strange surroundings. Odd buildings, widely spaced; futuristic ruins with trees sprouting from upper floor concrete. It was like being in a life-sized version of an architectural model presentation. We found the address and saw only vast sheets of mirrored glass and two doors. Of course we were pounding on the wrong door and a smiling Johannes appeared as if by magic further down the way. We walked through two heavy doors and into an open space with hardwood floors, tall ceilings, soft walls, sleek lighting, a grand piano and Neumann microphones. We all silently thought, “holy shit…the fucking Eagle has landed for sure.” Johannes led us on a grand tour of Peppermint Park studios. We were blown away. First rate accommodations, insane gear, great amps, unreal console, kitchen, couches, coffee, clean towels…in short: the works. Surely, this was not an opportunity to waste. We set up and we went to work. In any studio situation a million things can happen, especially with Enablers. The pressure of knowing we had just one night, the friendly, encouraging vibes from Johannes and the inspiring studio surroundings led us to try new ideas.

We came away from Peppermint Park with a brand new song worked up from a Goldring composition now titled “On Returning” and a new version of a Thomson composition, formerly performed by Touched By A Janitor. We re-titled the song “Hy”, and extended it into an improvisational piece allowing Byrnes to coax a menagerie of sounds from his kit and Pete to deliver lines from a letter found on Market Street in San Francisco. Thanks to Johannes’s vision for the Peppermint Park/Radio Grenoble studio series and Dave Hand’s Lancashire and Somerset label, Enablers are able to release these songs.

Alright then! Rush’N Attack from the northern part of Holland has a brand new EP called “White Smoke“. It’s Rush’N Attack their second EP following on the “Donut Hole EP” which was released in February 2008. We from Crucial Attack Records are really proud with this new release!

In case you don't know Rush’N Attack This Dutch outfit offers a stylistic blender mix that for the most part surprises, but only gradually wins you over. With “White Smoke” they still continuing their own kind of twist on hardcore-punk; Tense, twangy lead guitar plays over screamed vocals with a Henry Rollins intensity. The arrangements have a tight, MINUTEMEN flavour, though Rush’N Attack clearly rocks on the side of hardcore.

After the release of their debut EP “Donut Hole” the band started to play more and more shows and continued the rampage they already started with the release of their demo early 2007. Now one and a half year later we where more than excited about “White Smoke”.

For fans of Black Flag, Annihilation Time, Fucked Up and New Bomb Turks.

Aathma was born when Juan and Ricky joined at 2007 to record a demo with a couple of tracks that Juan had written. They really like it and they found Dani (from Adrift) to play bass guitar. They kept on written songs and started to play in Madrid first and all over Spain later with a lot of international bands such us A Storm of Light, Minsk, Monarch, Rotten Sound, Knut, Officium Triste, Grey Daturas and with some of the best Spanish underground bands like Moho, Machetazo, Adrift…Now they have selfrelease their first Cd, “The Call of Shivá”, with the help of two independent labels, Nooirax and Odio Sonoro.The album was recorded and mixed in Madrid by Carlos Santos. Italy does not get near enough credit for its innovative and raging hardcore bands. La Quiete and Raein of course get a fair bit of attention, but there are so many others that are pushing musical boundaries. The Infarto Scheisse and Lady Tornado have intense chaotic sounds that stand out and sound unlike most other bands. I recently discovered Lafalce who were pre The Infarto Scheisse and are also pretty raging. Then there are plenty of great screamo bands such as Violent Breakfast and more recent ones such as Morning Wood and Chinese Dama. Bands such as A Flower Kollapsed also play this sound but with more noise elements. Somewhere in amongst all of this lie Gerda, playing heavy and chaotic hardcore that is so fucking awesome and intense. Apparently people who like Gerda should also like Breach, Dissonant, Violent and Hard To Swallow. I must admit I've not heard of any of these bands so I guess I am not the fountain of knowledge I had thought. Guess I had better check them all out.

Gerda continue their brand of chaotic hardcore along similar lines to their previous album 'Cosa Dico Quando Non Parlo' on this new 12''. I only labelled it as 'screamo post metal noise' in the abstract because I don't really know how to define it - I saw a distro call it this and found it quite funny. The first side of this LP is much like the previous album. It doesn't really let up at any point, the vocalist screams away like something tragic has happened and the instruments all combine together to make a noise that I greatly enjoy. To be honest it kind of all merges together and sounds the same but maybe it requires many listens to fully appreciate the chaotic beauty. I like the basic sound that is going on so am happy anyway. Bits of it remind me of Dolcim, just a little slower but just as intense. There are some similarities with The Infarto Scheisse too I think. Maybe some people will find it a bit too samey but its hard to remain ultra intense and not have parts that sound similar.

The second side of the record goes a bit more experimental. They even mellow out a bit at times. It still sounds fantastic and so should be applauded that the band are being a bit more original that their standard sound. The lyrics are said to be introspective and desperate but there is no English translation or explanations. Overall, this is great stuff and maybe you will enjoy it too.

In defense of the fundamental rights of internet

Javier "Barrapunto" Candeira writes, "Last Monday the Spanish Government sent the parliament the latest draft for the Ley de Economia Sostenible (Sustainable Economy Act), which contained riders modifying the current laws on copyright and interactive services. These amendments give the Spanish Ministy of Culture the administrative power to take down websites (or order ISPs to block those hosted overseas), all without a court order and in the name of 'safeguarding Intellectual Property Laws against Internet Piracy'. For this reason some of us have written a manifesto that is being published today all over Spanish weblogs and media."

A group of journalists, bloggers, professionals and creators want to express their firm opposition to the inclusion in a Draft Law of some changes to Spanish laws restricting the freedoms of expression, information and access to culture on the Internet. They also declare that:

1 .- Copyright should not be placed above citizens' fundamental rights to privacy, security, presumption of innocence, effective judicial protection and freedom of expression.

2 .- Suspension of fundamental rights is and must remain an exclusive competence of judges. This blueprint, contrary to the provisions of Article 20.5 of the Spanish Constitution, places in the hands of the executive the power to keep Spanish citizens from accessing certain websites.

3 .- The proposed laws would create legal uncertainty across Spanish IT companies, damaging one of the few areas of development and future of our economy, hindering the creation of startups, introducing barriers to competition and slowing down its international projection.

4 .- The proposed laws threaten creativity and hinder cultural development. The Internet and new technologies have democratized the creation and publication of all types of content, which no longer depends on an old small industry but on multiple and different sources.

5 .- Authors, like all workers, are entitled to live out of their creative ideas, business models and activities linked to their creations. Trying to hold an obsolete industry with legislative changes is neither fair nor realistic. If their business model was based on controlling copies of any creation and this is not possible any more on the Internet, they should look for a new business model.

6 .- We believe that cultural industries need modern, effective, credible and affordable alternatives to survive. They also need to adapt to new social practices.

7 .- The Internet should be free and not have any interference from groups that seek to perpetuate obsolete business models and stop the free flow of human knowledge.

8 .- We ask the Government to guarantee net neutrality in Spain, as it will act as a framework in which a sustainable economy may develop.

9 .- We propose a real reform of intellectual property rights in order to ensure a society of knowledge, promote the public domain and limit abuses from copyright organizations. 10 .- In a democracy, laws and their amendments should only be adopted after a timely public debate and consultation with all involved parties. Legislative changes affecting fundamental rights can only be made in a Constitutional law.

Neurosis & Jarboe was a collaboration effort between the post-metal/sludge metal group Neurosis, and the former Swans keyboardist/vocalist Jarboe. They released their self-titled debut album in 2003 on Neurot Recordings. The album's artwork was designed by Jarboe-collaborator Cedric Victor-DeSouza. There are currently no plans for a follow-up album.

The collaboration was fully realized in several live performances throughout 2004 and 2005. During Neurosis' two hour set, Jarboe joined the band to perform four songs from their collaborative album in addition to a cover of Patti Smith's song "Easter." The band performed in various US cities including Seattle, San Francisco, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia, in addition to a European show in London.

Yo conocía, conozco y he escuchado el tremendo album que es I don´t care where i go when i die, recomendable para todo amante de la música más EXTREMA. Jodidamente buenos estos salvajes de Salt Lake City-Utah (Usa).

Nos presentan ahora, bueno, por este año. Su He never is coming back, que no es otra cosa, que la muestra de hasta donde se puede llevar el gusto por la música más extrema. Sinceramente, escuchar este disco supone un esfuerzo mental bastante grande , por su dureza y crudeza. Me explico, es un album demoledor, abrasivo, desgarrador, brutal, contundente y así, muchos adejtivos más. Por eso, debe de abstenerse gnete sensible y gente no tan sensible. Desde el primer minuto, podemos saborear la dulzura con la que estos cuatro musicos sacan lo mejor de si. Si cierras los ojos para escuchar este album, te aviso, es muy posible de que lleves algún susto y ya veréis el por qué.

Gaza son sencillamente geniales, acojonantes y ojalá, sigan sacandao muchos muchos muchos discos. Este es otro que hay que comprar obligatoriamente. Órdago para Gaza. Pobre de mis oídos y de vecinos, claro.

Some bands are famous, others are infamous and Kickback from Paris, the latest signing to the GSR roster, are most defintiely the latter. With a history that is rife with controversey, violence and hatred along with a middle finger and fuck you attitude to the hardcore scene that spawned them, Kickback return with their first album in almost 10 years titled No Surrender. As one of the first bands to fuse metal and hardcore, Kickback continue where they left off and all 11 songs on No Surrender are fuelled by the hate that drives them.

Stephen's vocals are as raw and pissed off as they ever were, spitting venom and rage with every twisted line of contempt. The music is a barrage of metallic riffing and thunderous drumming that lurches with groove forcing you to bang your head. Don Van Vliet, también conocido como Captain Beefheart (traducción literal; Capitán Corazón de Vaca) nació a mediados de los años 40’, en el distrito de Cucamonga (California - EEUU). Artista que no se limita a la música, sujeto a un eclecticismo y libertad creativa etiquetada por muchos de enfermiza; por lo iconoclasta y surrealista de su hacer.

Su obra musical más aclamada es Trout Mask Replica, proyecto que conformó con su banda de soporte. Experimento libre de poesía, disonancia y atonalidad en ritmica sincopada, fragmentada, que a extrañeza de antiguos rankings musicales supo vender un considerable número de copias (sobre todo para semejante obra experimental). Quizás gracias al «de boca en boca» de los músicos contemporáneos (cabe destacar a Frank Zappa, productor del disco). Comentan los escuchas que se requiere de cierta predisposición intelectual y dósis de paciencia a lo «extraño» para apreciar este y demas discos suyos.

Anteriormente se editan trabajos donde hay cierto acercamiento y inmersion al avant garde. Posterior a Trout Mask Replica hay tres discos editados en los 70’s donde continua la vía experimental, para luego crear con un enfoque de mayor semejanza a los estándares de la época.

Si no los conoces, los puedes asemejar a bandas como Sunn 0))), Earth, Corrupted etc…
