Bengali actress Suchitra Sen passed away in Kolkata Hospital

Legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen passed away at the age of 83 on Friday, January 17, 2014. She breathed her last at 8:25 am.

Suchitra Sen was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic on December 23, 2013 following a respiratory tract infection. Later she was treated in a private Intensive Treatment Unit for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She had been admitted due to chronic chest infection.

Suchitra Sen began her career with the Bengali film 'Shesh Kothay' in 1952 and is known for her role in Bimal Roy's 'Devdas' (1955) and 'Aandhi' (1975).

She is the first Bengali actress to be awarded at an international film festival (Best Actress award for Saat Paake Bandha in the 1963 Moscow film festival). She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 by Government of India. Notably, she allegedly refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005, preferring to stay out of the public eye. In 2012, Sen was conferred West Bengal government`s highest award Banga Bibhushan.

Noted Bharatanatyam exponent KJ Sarasa Passed Away

Noted Bharatanatyam exponent and Dance Guru K.J. Sarasa passed away today morning in Chennai. Her age is 78. She is survived by her sisters and their families. Choreographer Raghuram, K. and TN chief Jayalalitha learned dance from her dance schools which was set up in 1960.

Recalling her career spanning over 50 years, Jayalalithaa said Sarasa had trained many dancers, besides being 'the first woman nattuvanar,' a key composition in a Bharatantyam recital.

She was not only a great artiste, but also a true rasika who simply loved music and dance. She believed that a dancer needed to immerse herself in melody to be able to emote well. Her contributions won her several honours, including the ‘Kalaimamani’ title, the Swarnakalasam Award at the Kalidasa festival and the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademy Award from the Central Government.

Sarasa was unaffected by her success. Till her very end, she remained a loving, down-to-earth artiste, who was totally enchanted by dance.

CMAT to be conducted online from 20 to 28 February 2012

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has announced the dates for the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) 2012 for Admission to the Management Programs in the AICTE approved Management Institutions, for academic year 2012-2013. Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) for admission to all management institutes will be conducted online in 61 cities from 20 to 28th February, 2012.

CMAT aims at reducing the burden of students in attending multiple examinations and facilitating institutions to select suitable students for admission in all Management Programmes approved by AICTE for year 2012-13.

The CMAT will replace the existing state level and national level entrance exams for management courses except CAT. The scores awarded will be used for admission in the post graduate management programmes both at degree and diploma level. The questions will be based on quantitative techniques and data interpretation, logical reasoning, language comprehension and general awareness.

The institutions and State governments are required to register online free of charge for opting to CMAT-2012 scores for admissions for academic year 2012-13. The minority institutions shall effect admissions as per the provision available for such categories.

CMAT scores will help students get admissions in AICTE approved institutes/university departments in all management programmes catering to more than four lakh sanctioned seats of AICTE approved management institutions.

Students can appear for the examination on any day from February 20 to 28. The test will be held for about four lakh management seats across the country. “The scores awarded will be used for admission in the post graduate management programmes both at degree and diploma level all over India for 2012-13,” the official said. The registration for the CMAT will start on December 9, 2011.

The results will be declared from March 11 to April 11, 2012.

A golden voice Indian singer Bhupen Hazarika passes away. He was 85. Bhupen Hazarika was critically ill for few months and was admitted to Mumbai Kolilaben Dhirubhai hospital. He was having problem in breathing. "It was a multi-organ failure. The end came around 4.30 pm," Jayanta Saha, chief PRO at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital, said.

His long-time companion, filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi, his nephews and some well-wishers from his home state of Assam were at his side when he died.

His condition worsened when he had to undergo a minor surgery to attach a food pipe into his system. When he breathed his last, noted filmmaker and his friend Kalpana Lajmi was by his side. He was the recipient of many prestigious awards. He was awarded with Dada Saheb Phalke award and Padma Bhushan.

On September 8, Bhupen Hazarika celebrated his 85th birthday in hospital.

Born on September 8, 1926, he wrote is first song at a tender age of 10 and worked for the second Assamese Takie – “Indramalati” in 1939 when he was only 12 years old.He completed his Intermediate Arts from Cotton College, Guwahati, Assam in 1942, and went on to Banaras Hindu University to complete his B.A. in 1944 and his M.A. in Political Science in 1946. He earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York, USA in 1954, submitting a dissertation titled “Proposals for preparing India’s basic education to use audio-visual techniques in adult education”.In 1992, he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievements in cinema. on 8th feb. 2008 he got the Life Time Achievement Award in cinema .

A high strength Earthquake hit northeastern India on Sunday at 6:10 PM near the border with Nepal and was felt over a broad area.

Some Regional TV station reported that 10 to 12 buildings collapsed in Sikkim's state capital of Gangtok.

Pune MLA Ramesh Wanjale Dead

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s MLA Ramesh Wanjale (45) famously known as the 'Gold Man' died of cardiac arrest in a in Jahangir Hospital at 10.00 PM last night. Though the doctors at the hospital tried hard to stabilise his condition, he failed to respond to the treatment. Doctors at Jahangir Hospital tried everything possible to save Wanjale and it was decided to conduct an Angioplasty. Wanjale's condition worsened and he died during treatment at about 10.05 pm.
Wanjale had an appointment for an MRI scan at Joshi Hospital on Friday after he complained of shoulder and spinal pain. “He was advised to undergo shoulder, cervical spine and whole spine screening. He arrived at around 7 pm at the MRI section. He collapsed soon after he was taken for screening.

He was later shifted to Jahangir Hospital as his condition deteriorated. Wanjale is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. Wanjale's body was later sent to Sassoon General Hospital for post mortem.

Wanjale took on the Congress-NCP alliance in Khadakwasla, which is a part of the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. He defeated Vikas Dangat of the Congress and the BJP’s Murlidhar Mohol.

He wore nearly two kg of gold while campaigning and said he wanted transparency so that he would not be accused of making money after he became an MLA.

Wanjale was fascinated with gold ornaments and used to wear gold thick gold chains and bracelets totally weighing 800 grams and worth Rs 12 lakh.
