The Stuph File Program Slide Show - Esther Williams

Stuph File Program listeners, another video slide show is here. This one hails from June’s show #0199. It's a retro interview from my celebrity audio archives that features a talent who, sadly, is no long with us.

This was one with the legendary swimmer, Esther Williams. At the time that we spoke back in June of 2002, she was still a very active 80 year old who was embarking on a new business as a co-producer and promotional spokesperson for a show called Aquaria that was to be done in Las Vegas. Sadly, that project never got into the water.

After her 1962 marriage to Fernando Lamas, her co-star in Dangerous When Wet she retired from public life.

Esther was an absolute joy to talk to. We chatted for over an hour and she was engaging and warm and thoughtful. She told great stories and it was clear that she enjoyed the wonderful life she had in the public eye and more importantly, enjoyed every moment that she was in the pool.

What is the Q107 Classic Rock disCOVERy Series?

Sometimes people ask me why I started the Classic Rock disCOVERy Series. The answer is that I love promoting bands and luckily I am in a position to do so. Since I am not working at a station that normally promotes said bands, I had to find a way to work Q107 into the equation. Q107 is THE classic rock go to. The station is built on the foundation of rock. Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles...how can new music compete with that? The answer is that they don't have to. Instead, new bands can pay homage to their favorite classic rockers.

In Toronto there are very few chances for bands to get exposure. There are also very few opportunities for listeners to find new music. Just because a band is not on the radio does not mean that they aren't worth listening to. The music industry is tough...take Dan Mangan for example. He worked his butt for years. He applied for grants and got shot down, he played gigs for beer, and begged radio stations to put him on the air. You could have been listening to him all along.

The Classic Rock disCOVERy Series has turned into a community of bands that promote and support each other not just in Toronto but all over the country. It is so much fun to hear a Toronto band like The Balconies cover The Beatles or Vancouver's Yukon Blonde sing Suite Judy Blue Eyes or Nova Scotia's Joel Plaskett giving props to Bruce Springsteen. Sprinkled in between the bands you might already know are these little nuggets of awesome. A collection of bands that are just trying to make it in the industry. Here are a few of those bands.

What is Phresh FM?

It’s a not-for-profit online radio station. We’re just a group of volunteers, a group of DJs that originally started it just to compete with the music we didn’t like being played on the radio. Originally we decided to compete by putting up a pirate radio station. For about eight months, we broadcast illegally over the airwaves every Saturday and that was a lot of fun. December 8, we decided to switch over to online radio where it was legal and everybody in the world was able to actually hear us. Phresh FM has continued to grow. We’ve grown from one night a week to seven days a week. We have over 30 regular volunteers.

Why were you broadcasting illegally at the beginning when the Internet is available?

We found that we really wanted to get to the Calgary crowd and that Internet radio at that time, we felt at that time, was not where it was at, where it should be. We also didn’t have the technology or know-how. As DJs we can set up equipment, but when it comes to computers we were all completely lost. That’s one thing. It took us probably those eight months to figure out how to work online radio. Once we got set up and realized it wasn’t going to be massively expensive like it appeared at the beginning.... We found a cheap way of doing it and it works well. Ever since then we’ve said ‘this works, let’s keep doing it.’ Originally, the pirate thing was fun as well.

CBC keeps Kitchener Radio Costs Secret

Taxpayer-funded CBC is keeping secret the cost of its new local radio station, while it spars with private stations that are upset to be competing with the public purse.

“All of the financial data on what we spend on individual locations we consider to be competitive information,” said Chris Boyce, executive director of radio and audio for the state broadcaster.

CBC Radio responded to an access-to-information request by withholding financial plans, staffing plans and market research related to its local FM station.

CBC launched its Kitchener station March 11 without a broadcast licence that it did not receive until April 25. Blaming an oversight, the CBC briefly yanked its station off the air in April when private broadcasters cried foul.

Howard Stern’s New Mansion Worth $52 Million

Howard Stern’s new mansion in Palm Beach, Florida cost him a cool $52 million, though for someone who has two jobs paying out millions of dollars, the price tag on the luxurious estate seems more, well, normal.

The shock jock dropped $52 million on the waterfront home, which Trulia explains sits on 3.25 waterfront acres. The house itself totals almost 40,000 square feet of living space.

The home, custom built in 1992, was privately sold to Stern by American businessman Martin Trust and his wife, Diana. For Howard Stern, the mansion’s $52 million price tag probably seems like pocket change.
Stern is worth more than $500 million, with some reports saying he could be a billionaire. The shock jock signed a deal with SiriusXM radio, which pays him half a billion dollars. He then picked up a second job as a judge on America’s Got Talent. That gig also pays millions.

BREAKING: Jim Pattison Buys Three Radio Stations Calgary & Winnipeg

KAMLOOPS, BC, May 16, 2013 /CNW/ - Bell Media, Astral Media Inc. (Astral) and the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Limited Partnership (Pattison) today jointly announced Pattison's acquisition of three key FM radio stations located in Calgary and Winnipeg.

Subject to regulatory approvals, Pattison will purchase the following two Bell Media stations and one Astral station:

Bell Media:

KooL FM 101.5 (CKCE-FM) - hot adult contemporary format in Calgary
FAB 94.3 (CHIQ-FM) - classic pop format in Winnipeg

Astral:

QX 104 (CFQX-FM) - country format in Winnipeg

Rick Arnish, Chairman of Jim Pattison Broadcast Group stated, "This is a very important acquisition for our Broadcast Group and, with the approval of this transaction from the CRTC, we will expand our presence in the major markets of Calgary and Winnipeg, which we have been focusing on for some time."

CBC's Stephen Quinn Top Dog Of Afternoon Vancouver Radio

It probably also helped catapult CBC Radio One's On The Coast Show (88.1 FM, 690 AM) into the top-ranked spot in the April PPM ratings.

For the first time, the show hosted by the often-amusing Stephen Quinn attracted the largest Vancouver audience between 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., crushing CKNW Radio, News 1130, and QM FM.

CBC Radio One's afternoon-drive show was lagging in eighth place when Quinn, a former municipal-affairs reporter, was tagged to become the host five years ago.

Virgin Radio is 20 years old, having been launched by Richard Branson at 12.15pm on April 30th, 1993. Since its birth the radio network has travelled to all corners of the earth and has seen some spectacular appointments and acquisitions.

To celebrate two decades of the much loved music station we’re looking back at some of the highlights from Virgin Radio over the years. So without further ado, did you know that…

1. The first voice to be heard on Virgin Radio was none other than Richard Branson’s, with the inaugural show coming straight out of the Virgin Megastore in Manchester.

2. The first song to be played on the station was ‘Born to be Wild’ by INXS – a cover of the Steppenwolf classic.

3. The first interview to be conducted was with Midge Ure.

Vancouver Radio | Ross On Radio

Is EDM still an exotic genre—one that programmers are still grappling with? Or has it long taken over mainstream top 40, one superstar producer at a time? Folk/acoustic product may make a surprise showing. Piano ballads may pile up. Turbo-pop is still the mortar, and it's less "pop" all the time. As is the case in so many ways, the distinction between what's on top 40 and what remains underground is not sonic, but a function of what has been worked to top 40.

In Canada, the distinctions are even less clear, particularly because dance acts and producers have contributed significantly to stations' 35%-40% Canadian Content requirements for several years. Deadmau5 is a vaguely familiar name outside EDM circles here. But his "Ghosts N Stuff" was a Canadian top 40 hit four years ago. Armin van Buuren's "This Is What It Feels Like" hasn't yet spread beyond a handful of dance stations and mix-show airplay in the United States. (It was just serviced to top 40 this week.) In Canada, it's a fast-moving top 10 hit at top 40 radio.

CFNO bills itself as our Hometown Sound and for the past 30 years the radio station has played an important role in keeping the geographically distant communities of the North Shore connected.

As community leaders, we have witnessed the work of many past and present CFNO staff as they criss-cross the North Shore to report on local news and attend important events. In an age where media is available at the touch of a screen, the sort of personal connection and local storytelling which CFNO provides is a unique and important service.

Therefore, it is with some dismay that I read about Dougall Media’s application to the CRTC and contemplate what sort of service might be provided by the station’s departure from the listening region (Dougall Media Applies To Move Marathon’s CFNO Operation To Thunder Bay.
