Social Camp Memphis recap

So this weekend I went to Social Camp Memphis. I spoke on a panel about specialized blogging. I represented parent bloggers. I spoke with Memphis Connect and Just a Girl in the World moderated.

I also attended a bunch of sessions about facebook, social media transparency, and blogging. I met some great folks such as Darnell Settles, BooksRGood, gokben, and JenSized. Exchanged ideas with Amanda Mauk, Ryan Hinricher, Jay Mead, Ryan Turner, and Chris W Bird . Leeched knowledge off of JTRigsby, I Love Memphis, Dave Barger and Rod Kirby.

It was held at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering (MASE). It was a top notch facility. It is Tennesse fist and largest charter school. I was highly impressed with their facilities and program. What other high school do you know that has a wind tunnel in a class room or a machine that simulates earthquakes.

I learned a lot and has left me thinking about a couple of things. Old ideas have sparked with new flames. I am heading to Wordcamp in Bham this weekend and Izeafest the weekend after that. I think you might see some changes around here and I hope you like them.

SocialCamp, IzeasFest, and Blog World oh my!

I haven't had a lot of time to do anything around here except do a contest or two. I have been super busy at work which is weird because this is supposed to be my slow time of the year.

I do have a couple things going on though. I am speaking on one of the panels at Social Camp this Saturday. It is the same day as Cooper Young Festival but I know some people are attending the morning sessions and going to CYF afterward. My panel is in the morning with Memphis Connect and it is about specialty blogging. You can still register to attend and there is a price for any budget. Also I am a sponsor of Social Camp Memphis and on the planning committee.

The weekend after that I am heading to Birmingham for their Word Camp with my friends Bob of One Half Amazing and Dave Barger of Luna Web. Although I do not have a wordpress blog, I keep thinking about making the plunge.

The next weekend after that is Izeafest and words can not explain how excited I am to attend that one. I get to meet some of the people I have read or tweeted with such as BenSpark, PRSarahEvans, and so many more.

A couple weeks later I am heading to Blog World Expo in Vegas. I will be kicking it with BenSpark, GeekMommy, and Sara from My Sippy Cup Runneth Over.

I will be tearing up the roads and airways and am completely stoked about it. I hope to learn a lot and meet some really cool people.

And you are invited. In Tennessee we have a click or ticket law. Not wearing a seat belt, you get a ticket. I go to traffic court a lot (I swear my foot has lead in it) and every time there is at least 50 to 60 people there arguing that they just took off the belt for a second.

I also remember taking our daughter home for the first time and having a mini freak out because I was unsure of how to get her in the car seat and that I even had it installed correctly.

Labor Day Tailgating, first time using Whrrl

I have never used Whrrl before but was presented an opportunity that required I do a Whrrl story. Last weekend was the first game of the season for the University of Memphis. The opener was against Ole Miss. This is a rival for Memphis but not for Ole Miss. Works out that way a lot around her. Although we are not a rival for Ole Miss but you don't lose to Memphis if you are ranked #18 in the country and they didn't.

Football season is huge in my house because of tailgating. I love the community aspect of tailgating. In fact there are some people I only talk to during football season and then don't see them again until next year. Every year we tailgate in the same spot. Below is my story in two parts.

After using Whrrl, I got to say I enjoy it. It was simple user interface that made making a slide show very simple. Sharing it on Twitter and Facebook is one button publishing. The whole experience was awesome. The only thing I would change is that you are limited to 25 slides but maybe I should be more selective in my shots.

Review of Max Lucado’s Fearless

I am not much of a reader of Christian books, non-fiction or fiction. I read the first couple of the Left Behind books but that was years ago. Thank to Thomas Nelson Book Reviews, I had the opportunity to review Max Lucado’s Fearless.

Lucado is a Bible-believing preacher. Therefore his writing is going to refer his readers to the Bible. He's going to take the examples of Bible and guidance/instruction based on those. Lucado's writing is upfront and frank. No hidden meaning here or searching for hidden messages.

Fearless starts out with a story of the author brother. His brother was troubled by his fear and insecurities. He was a recovering alcoholic. The whole premise of the Fearless is that we all have fears and if we didn’t have them how much better our life would be. For example, I fear that I am not going to be a great parent or make enough money to support my family. Max Lucado examines 13 ways we need to “fear not.” At the end of the book there are questions for group discussion.

If Christian writing is for you, I recommend Fearless because it is so inspirational. He mentions several ways to change fear into faith without coming off too preachy. Change is scary and if you have a change coming up in your life or currently experiencing one then pick up this book and change your perspective.

Changing kid's name if you blog: Do you do it?

I need your help. As readership increases on my blog, some people close to me have raised a concern. The concern is that I use my child real name on this blog. I also use the people closest to her real name as well.

I tried to use fake names when I first started blogging. I ended getting mixed up and just quit doing it. The concern comes from that someone who is a child abductor could use this information to take my child. I post pictures of her here.

two things brought this concern on. I was in public and someone who read my blog but I didn't really know called out to my daughter and asked if she was going to go see her Mimi. Imagine someone of that nature, who could say "Let's go see your grandmother's name" and my kid, who is so trusting, would go off to be never seen again. Also in the same day, my wife was at the scrapbook store and someone else brought up the same thing. To me that is a sign.

My question to you is should I change her name to something completely different or just not worry about it? What do you do if you blog? I am leaning towards changing it.

For those who are not aware I work at ALSAC. ALSAC is the fund raising arm of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I have always wanted to work here. It is a dream come true. As a father, childhood cancer is important to me. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The color is gold. Here are some facts.

One in every 330 Americans develops cancer before the age of 20.
On the average, 36 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer everyday in the United States.
On the average, one in every four elementary schools has a child with cancer. The average high school has two students who are current or former cancer patients.
Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the United States.
Childhood cancers affect more potential patient-years of life than any other cancer except breast and lung cancer.
The causes of most childhood cancers are unknown. At present, childhood cancer cannot be prevented.
Childhood cancer occurs regularly, randomly and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region. In the United States, the incidence of cancer among adolescents and young adults is increasing at a greater rate than any other age group, except those over 65 years.
Despite these facts, childhood cancer research is vastly and consistently underfunded.

I have a friend on Twitter, yes I do consider people on Twitter my friends, who lost a child to cancer recently. No I want provide a link to her tweet/pain. My prayers and thoughts are with her.

10 Things I Have Learned Since Becoming a Dad

I always reference my archives when people ask what I was like before I was a dad. I was a completely different person. I did not want kids or to be married. I look back at that stupid kid and I want to shake him. Becoming a father is not what changes you. Being a father is what changes you. Being a Dad is a learning process every single day. In the last 3 years, I have learned a thing or two. Here is a short list of long lessons.

10. Patience is a virtue find it in a woman and you better find it too.
My mom has a saying similar that goes "Patience is a virtue find it in a woman, never in a man." I will be the first to admit, I had no patience before being a father. Now, to get through a sentence it might take my daughter a week to get to the point.

9. Humility, it happens.
There is no more humble experience than changing a diaper except the words, "Daddy, I'm done come wipe my booty!"

8. This too shall pass.
As a first time dad, I might have been a wee bit overprotective. While we were still in the hospital, I would assault people with anti-bacterial foam. I apologize to my family and friends that I made use excessively. Kids are tough and resilient. Yes they get sick and they fall down but they are tough. There will be tears but they will pass.

7. Running while screaming is fun.
Next time you are near a playground, stop and listen. You will hear shrieks of joy while children are running. To me that translates to that sometimes you need to let it all go and run around and scream a little bit. Try it literally with your child or your niece/nephew or you friend's kids. You'll forget all your problems for a few moments.

6. Non- parents just don't understand.
I lost a lot of friends when that stick said YES. I wasn't the first of my friends to have a kid but I was the last one it was expected of. It did help me figure out who my true friends were and I have built some awesome relationships because of it. At work, I am one of the few my age with a kid. The non-parents don't understand the stress of parenthood or the joys that follow it.

5. Always be listening.
In #10 I stated that it could take a week at times for my daughter to get to the point. Other times, she can make her point in seconds if I am not paying attention. Every night Danni and I kneel in front of her bed and say the "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" prayer. Every night about half way through she whispers, "I really love you daddy." If I wasn't listening I would miss those sweet little words.

4. Google is your new best friend
You are not going to remember all those nursery rhymes that you want to pass on to your kid. You probably not going to know how to put the pack and play together. Forgot how to swaddle the baby because you were half asleep when the nurse showed you. Google, YouTube, Facebook, etc are all going to be great resources. You are not the first nor will you be last to have the problems you are having. Someone has been through it and either written about it, posted a video about it or done both.

3. Having a child is like letting your heart walk around
With your heart inside your chest, it is protected. Being a parent is taking that natural protection away and exposing it to the elements. You can't protect them from everything no matter how hard you try.
2. It's a bird, it's a plane, it's daddy
You are the strongest, best, and can fix anything in you child's eyes. You can not disappoint them if you do your best. No matter what they will always love you. Try not to screw it up.

1. You are being watched.
No matter what time of the day or night (except when she is asleep) Danni is watching me. She likes to walk like me. She likes to laugh like me. She even says the same catchphrases I say.

Children are a blank slate and learn everything from you. It is worse than Santa Clause and him knowing if you have been bad or good so be good for goodness sake.

Being under this constant supervision can be a little taxing. It has its bonuses though. I am so on guard that I have become a better human being and employee. You will find nothing improper here. My kid might see me.

To say I am an avid reader would be understatement. I have been know to read the back of a shampoo bottle when I have nothing else to read. I love thrillers, horror, mystery, autobiographical, you name it I'll enjoy if it is the printed word.

I have lots of books to read in "To Read" pile but I am always looking. I search the intrawebs for new and interesting books. This is how came across Christopher Ransom's book The Birthing House.

One review reads:

I love when you get to know the author more. I love going to hear authors speak at bookstores. I love when there is additional information about how they write or preview of chapters. This would be great for conferences because you could put your logo, website, face, and all your contact info on there. Since it a folded over card you have lots of room. An added bonus is that since everyone else will be handing out business cards, you will stand out because yours will be different. If you are a parent use them for your kid's next party or sleepover. The possibilities are endless.

The only drawback is you have to have a design but most of us who blog have some design skills or know someone who does. If anyone has some design skills, feel free to leave a comment below.
