I don't know about you, but I have a lifetime of photos, cards, and just an immense amount of stuff I have saved over a lifetime. In the past few years I have been trying to come up with a way to organize this stuff - so it would be coherent and someone who would be sifting through my things at some point when I have left this earth would be able to understand the timeline.
The other day I was driving down Bluffton Road here in Waynedale and saw a sign on a church bulletin board ( a church I periodically attend, by the way) with the words 'scrapbooking' asking for people who would like to get involved. I put in my memory bank and called the church. I called the woman whose number I had been given and talked to her that very evening.
She told me to bring a pair of scissors and a few photos on Friday night to get started. This should help me with my project of putting all things in order. Thank god she did not tell me to bring box cutters- although at some point I might need them. I have so much stuff!!!!

There has always been a lot of controversy over how one should wash their face! From the moment a little child begins to get soap in their eyes as a toddler to adolescence when acne or other types of hormonal eruptions takes place to the time when wrinkles begin to appear on the sides of a person's eyes or mouth- everyone just thinks that using the right type of soap, cream, or combination of same will take way the ever-encroaching age builders.

Maybe mud soap will do it!

I am sure a variety of methods may work for a number of souls. But, I am going to be 59 years old in April of this year and have few wrinkles and my face is fairly clear- some say I look younger than my age- I find this a ridiculous observation since I am my age and proud of it! What has been my face washing regimen all these years?

I take a big bunch of cold water in the morning and splash it on my face, taking care to dry my face with a clean towel.

Then at night I wash my face with hot water on a wash cloth- letting it dry on its own till I get to a towel.

That's it!

It's hereditary- believe it or not.

Northern Indiana's Shipshewana is the heart of Amish country in this part of the world. There, it is as if the planet has stepped back in time to a place unknown to those of us who thrive on Facebook, Twitter, and ecommerce.

People in buggies, large open spaces, and shops that sell everything from canned preserves to the amish dining table are everywhere to be found.

More than this is the experience of being in these places, taking the time to walk from store to store, go to each open flea market ( not during winter, sorry) or just eating at one of their fine restaurants where the food is homemade ( a commodity not often experienced in our hurry up and get it world).

When spring arrives take a trip to Shipshewana, and travel back in time.

The fight against obesity has become one of the great causes of the 21st century. Even so, there are still women who are big, beautiful and gorgeous. Those women may be considered medically obese, but are so attractive that they really do not take this criteria too seriously. And, maybe we shouldn't either. Oftentimes, the way we feel about ourselves, our own self-esteem can predict our good health.

There are many woman who wear plus size party dresses when they go out in public, either to a holiday office party, a fundraiser, or a business networking event.

And, as long as they appear meticulously groomed, with an arresting presence, many time not much attention is paid to their plus sized status. Let's get off of this weight obsession we have in America and get on with helping our women and girls ( and men too) feel good about who they are and what they are contributing to society.

Going green has really never been a real trendy way to throw a New Year's Eve party, but theme parties have often been used during these wild and raucous get-together. Some have celebrated ethnically, and made the parties ethnically based. For example, having a Hawaiian Luau, with belly dancing, grass skirts and lots of pineapple and frothy drinks has been a staple for some.

And, of course, there is also the dress-up theme-something like a Halloween party where people wear costumes. Some dress up like corn cobs or boxes. Some go as the current president of the United States.

Some wear a sexy nurse outfit or crazy looking clownfaces or even cheese on their heads.

All in all, New Year's Eve celebrations can be fun, innovative and full of exuberance- just know when to pull the plug!

New Year's Resolutions

Here we are coming up to the big day-the day that many of us use to make resolutions to change our way of lives. Now, I don't know about you, but I have found that in the past two decades there has been a wide swing in the way people dress when they go out in public. Whole websites and chain emails are sent and presented showing people in Big Box stores dressed like..well, should we say -like slobs?

We run the gamut from funny tee shirts to shorts in the wintertime, to maternity blouses that are really just hiding obesity. There was a time when women would not go out without being dressed in heels, hose, and dresses.

Of course, that was well before things became politically correct and we could just do whatever we wanted to do- and not care a whit about appearances.

What do you think? Is it important to look good in public or does it really matter- and should looking presentable in public be included in your New Year's resolution list?

The other day at a family gathering my son, Chris was asking about favorite Christmas memories. I could not come up with one immediately and this really has nothing to do with Christmas, but it is one of my favorite memories because it symbolizes how my father was and how much I learned from him

As a teenager, at one point my family had gotten a pool table and we played pool a lot in the basement. My father was pretty handy at the game and he saw how my method of scattershop and sloppy antics would not drop the ball into any favored slot. So, he would patiently tell me where to stand, where to hit the ball with my cue stick and how to sink those balls where I wanted them to go. I realized that I could handle the game, and that there was techniques to pool, that is wasn't 'just a game' and that the more I practiced the better I got.

My father is no longer here, and those day of having a pool safety net are gone as well.

But, the lessons are still there- as I teach my grandchildren the rules of the game.
