Jarhead Fertilizer Turns Baltimore Into a Living, Breathing Noise Machine

2026-04-02T21:54:00.000-07:00

Baltimore, MD — February 27, 2026

A firsthand account of the underground

There’s a certain kind of electricity that only exists in rooms like this — low ceilings, dim lights, and a crowd that knows exactly why they showed up. No distractions, no pretension. Just anticipation thick enough to feel in your chest before a single note is played.

By the time Jarhead Fertilizer took the stage that Friday night in Baltimore, the atmosphere had already shifted. Conversations died down, bodies pressed closer, and the space tightened into something almost ritualistic. What followed wasn’t just a performance — it was an eruption.

From the first riff, the room snapped. Guitars didn’t just cut through the air; they carved it apart. The sound was raw, unpolished in the best way possible — the kind that doesn’t ask for your attention, it takes it. Drums hit like blunt force trauma, relentless and unforgiving, locking the entire room into a shared pulse that felt more instinctive than musical.

There’s something about shows like this that can’t be replicated anywhere else. It’s not just the volume or the aggression — it’s the proximity. You’re not watching from a distance; you’re inside it. Every movement on stage ripples through the crowd. Every breakdown pulls people closer, tighter, more connected in a way that feels almost primal.

Jarhead Fertilizer thrives in that chaos. There’s no separation between band and audience — just a constant exchange of energy. Sweat, noise, and motion blur into one continuous experience where time stops meaning anything. You don’t check your phone, you don’t think about anything outside that room. For those minutes, nothing else exists.

And that’s the point.

In an era where everything is polished, filtered, and curated, nights like this feel rare — almost defiant. No backing tracks, no perfect lighting cues, no need for anything beyond the music itself and the people who came to feel it. It’s messy, it’s loud, and it’s unapologetically real.

You leave with ringing ears, maybe a bruise or two, and that lingering feeling that you were part of something that can’t be captured on a screen. Something that only exists in that exact moment, with those exact people.

That’s what makes it worth it.

That’s what keeps you coming back.

Circle Jerks Ignite Baltimore Soundstage in a Relentless Hardcore Assault

2026-04-01T22:56:00.000-07:00

Baltimore Soundstage — April 1st, 2026

A firsthand account of the underground

There are nights when punk feels like a museum piece—preserved, referenced, occasionally imitated—but rarely lived. And then there are nights like this one at Baltimore

Soundstage, where the past doesn’t just echo; it detonates in real time. Circle Jerks didn’t come to remind anyone of what hardcore used to be. They came to prove it still breathes, still sweats, and still hits like a fist to the teeth.

From the moment the room began to fill, there was a palpable tension in the air—less anticipation, more recognition. This wasn’t a crowd chasing nostalgia; it was a congregation of lifers, the kind of people who don’t just listen to punk, but carry it in their posture, their scars, their refusal to fully “grow out of it.” Mixed among them were younger faces too, drawn not by myth but by reputation. That cross-generational energy set the tone before a single note was played.

By the time Circle Jerks took the stage, the room had compressed into something dense and volatile. No elaborate intro, no theatrics—just a band walking into position like they had something urgent to say and no time to waste. And then it hit.

The opening barrage was immediate and unapologetic. Songs didn’t unfold so much as erupt—short, sharp bursts of controlled chaos that felt almost surgical in their precision. What’s remarkable about Circle Jerks in 2026 isn’t just that they can still play fast—it’s that they understand why the speed matters. There’s intent behind every acceleration, every abrupt stop, every shouted line. It’s not about proving stamina; it’s about delivering impact.

Keith Morris, now decades removed from the feral volatility of his early days, commands the stage in a different but equally compelling way. The wild-eyed unpredictability has evolved into something more deliberate, almost authoritative. He doesn’t need to thrash to hold attention; his presence alone anchors the performance. When he leans into the mic, it’s less a scream into the void and more a direct confrontation with the room. His voice, while weathered, hasn’t lost its bite—it carries a grit that feels earned rather than diminished.

There’s a fascinating tension in watching a figure like Morris perform these songs today. Lines that once sounded like immediate reactions to a collapsing system now land with the weight of history behind them. And yet, they don’t feel outdated. If anything, they resonate differently—less like youthful rebellion, more like a stubborn refusal to concede.

Behind him, the band operates with a tightness that borders on telepathic. Greg Hetson’s guitar work remains the backbone of the Circle Jerks sound—razor-sharp, economical, and relentless. There’s no excess here, no indulgence. Every riff is a tool, every chord a weapon. The rhythm section, while not part of the original lineup, doesn’t feel like a replacement so much as a reinforcement. They lock in with a clarity that keeps the chaos from spilling over into sloppiness.

The setlist reads like a manifesto of hardcore essentials. Tracks from Group Sex land with particular force—not as relics, but as living documents. The brevity of those songs works in the band’s favor; there’s no room for momentum to dip, no opportunity for the audience to disengage. It’s a relentless forward push, a series of impacts rather than a narrative arc.

And then there’s the crowd.

Baltimore Soundstage isn’t a massive venue, and that intimacy becomes a critical part of the experience. The pit forms quickly, not as a separate entity but as an extension of the band’s energy. Bodies collide, spin, fall, and rise again in a rhythm that mirrors the music itself. It’s chaotic, yes, but not mindless. There’s an unspoken code at play—an understanding that this is a shared release, not a competition.

What stands out most is the lack of distance between performer and audience. There’s no barrier in spirit, even if there is one physically. Morris engages, not with scripted banter, but with a kind of raw acknowledgment. He sees the crowd, and the crowd sees him—not as an icon on a pedestal, but as someone still very much in the fight.

Midway through the set, there’s a brief moment where things seem to slow—not musically, but emotionally. It’s subtle, almost imperceptible, but it’s there. A glance, a pause, a breath. And then it’s gone, replaced by another surge of sound. It’s a reminder that beneath the aggression, there’s something deeply human driving all of this.

By the time “Wild in the Streets” hits, the room is no longer a room. It’s a single, unified organism, shouting every word back at the stage with a kind of collective urgency. It’s less a performance at this point and more a ritual—one that blurs the line between past and present, performer and participant.

What Circle Jerks accomplish in a setting like this isn’t just a successful show—it’s a reaffirmation. In an era where so much of music is mediated, polished, and optimized for consumption, they offer something stubbornly physical and immediate. There’s no filter here, no attempt to modernize or repackage. The songs are delivered as they were meant to be: fast, loud, and uncomfortably honest.

And maybe that’s why it still works.

Because hardcore, at its core, was never about perfection. It was about urgency. About saying something now because waiting meant losing the moment. Circle Jerks haven’t lost that instinct. If anything, they’ve refined it—stripped away anything unnecessary until only the essential remains.

As the final notes ring out and the band steps away, there’s no grand finale, no drawn-out goodbye. Just a sense that something real just happened—and that everyone in the room was part of it.

For a band that helped define a genre built on impermanence, Circle Jerks have achieved something rare: they’ve endured without softening, adapted without diluting, and aged without losing relevance. This isn’t nostalgia. This is survival.

And on nights like this, survival sounds a lot like victory.

Women’s March organizers protest the NRA before 17-mile march to the Justice Department

2017-07-14T23:35:00.002-07:00

Women’s March organizers led hundreds of protesters Friday on a 17-mile march from the the National Rifle Association’s headquarters to the Justice Department in blistering heat to decry what demonstrators called the gun lobby’s disregard for the lives of people of color.

A march in front of the NRA’s headquarters in Fairfax County led off the two-day event. On Saturday morning, demonstrators will gather for a second rally in front of the Department of Justice in downtown Washington.

The demonstration was a response to a controversial, one-minute NRA recruitment video, released last month, that some interpreted as provoking fear and inciting violence. Conservative pundit Dana Loesch, an NRA spokeswoman, narrates the ad and criticizes recent protests by left-leaning groups, saying demonstrators “bully and terrorize the law-abiding until the only option left is for the police to do their jobs and stop the madness.”

Friday’s protesters carried signs that said “Black Lives Matter” and chanted such lines as “None of us are safe until all of us are safe!”

“We are not trying to stop gun ownership,” Carmen Perez, an organizer of January’s Women’s March on Washington, said at the rally outside the NRA. “We are trying to stop the violence that comes with it.”

Hundreds then embarked on the trek to the Justice Department’s headquarters. Temperatures reached 90 degrees at noon, but humidity made it feel like 105, according to the National Weather Service. The afternoon brought drenching storms and winds gusting to 50 mph.

LGBT, feminist and criminal justice groups organized the demonstrations and provided water and snacks along the route. Marchers were met with both cheers of support and honks of frustration as traffic became snarled at various intersections.

After seeing the video that featured Loesch, Women’s March founder Tamika Mallory wrote a letter to Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s executive vice president and chief executive, calling on him to remove the video and apologize for it.

The NRA then released a second video, calling out Mallory and her letter while telling the left to “grow up” and stop the protests.

Loesch said Friday that she supported the demonstrators’ right to protest but was confused by their message.

She criticized Women’s March organizers for excluding women who didn’t hold their progressive views, saying, for example, that organizers failed to give women who oppose abortion a platform at the march.

A National Rifle Association of America ad, narrated by conservative television host Dana Loesch, stirred controversy online. (National Rifle Association of America)

She also pushed back on criticism that her video incited violence, saying the march gave a platform to Madonna, who told a crowd of hundreds of thousands gathered on the Mall in January that she had “thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House.” (Madonna later said she “spoke in metaphor.”)

“I’m confused by it,” Loesch said of Friday’s demonstration.

“If this is a rally where they’re trying to promote unity or raise awareness about something they perceive I or the NRA did wrong, I don’t know if they can do it with a clean slate knowing who the organizers are and what some of the organizers stand for.”

Demonstrators also protested the NRA for its silence following the acquittal of a Minnesota police officer in the killing of Philando Castile, a black man and legal gun owner who was shot in his car after he told the officer he was carrying a licensed firearm. Critics accused the NRA of standing up only for white gun owners.

[Gun owners are outraged by the Philando Castile case. The NRA is silent.]

“I believe that Philando Castile had a right to bear arms and a right to life, and that was brutally taken from him,” said Sydney Stewart, a college student living in the District for the summer who attended the demonstration. “That’s why I’m marching.”

Officer Jeronimo Yanez pulled Castile’s car over in a suburb near Minneapolis and St. Paul, and the officer later said he thought Castile matched the description of a suspect in a robbery. The stop quickly escalated.

Yanez fired into the car, saying later that he thought Castile was going for his gun, a claim Castile’s girlfriend, who was sitting in the seat next to him, disputed. She began streaming the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook Live.

Loesch said Friday that while the national gun-rights organization didn’t speak out on the Castile case, at least one local chapter condemned the killing. She called Castile’s death “awful” and said police should have used better tactics to de-escalate the situation.

She also added that the circumstances surrounding the shooting weren’t clear-cut, noting that Yanez told investigators that he smelled “burnt marijuana” in Castile’s vehicle and said he feared for his life.

“It’s a lot more complicated than they are trying to portray it,” Loesch said. “There are decisions that went wrong on both sides.”

The demonstrations will conclude Saturday with a 10 a.m. vigil in front of the Justice Department.

Maxwell Grant, a 47-year-old pastor who traveled from Connecticut for the march, said it was time the country came together to support additional gun restrictions. He planned to march the entire route.

“I live about 40 miles from Newtown. After the Sandy Hook shooting, I came to think it was a moral imperative to rethink our national conversation on guns,” he said. “I’ve got my travel pants, my floppy hat on. I’m ready.”

Bob Bland, another organizer of the Women’s March, said the rally was intended to draw a connection between the NRA and the Justice Department, both of which she said have failed to treat whites and minorities equally.

“We’re marching to the DOJ because Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice’s racist decisions over the years are putting people of color at direct impact,” she said.

“This is all part of the revolving door between the gun industry and the halls of power in Washington.”

Aging Ian MacKaye Chases Kids Off Dischord House Porch

2017-06-28T21:50:00.000-07:00

WASHINGTON – For decades, touring bands have made a pilgrimage to the Dischord house, the legendary residence featured on the cover of Minor Threat’s Salad Days 7”. Many hope to recreate that iconic photo, but witnesses report that an aging and grumpy Ian MacKaye has become fed up with the trespassing and started running people off of his property.

“We were so excited to stop and try to snap off a few photos for the insert of our next record, but as soon as we got into position the door flung open and Ian comes out screaming at us to get off his damn porch,” said Daniel Morgan, frontman of straight edge hardcore band ClearlyxStraight. “I left one of our demos behind, I hope he checks it out. Glad I got to see him even if he was trying to hit me with a broom.”

After Morgan chronicled his story on Instagram others have come forward with their own harrowing tales of close calls with MacKaye.

“Maybe it is trespassing, but I just wanted a quick photo on the stairs while I was in town on a work meeting,” said a source that chose to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation. “I had the self timer on my camera and right as I sat down the door flew open and there Ian was screaming at me. He chased me for two blocks before finally letting up. I thought he was going to kill me, or worse, force me to fold 7-inch covers by hand. One photo is not worth all that. I have a family I need to think about.”

Neighborhood lore has caused children to avoid the Dischord house at all costs for fear that “Old Man MacKaye” will grab them and turn them into hats. This has led to much speculation and urban legend regarding what exactly goes on behind that chain link fence.

“Everyone is afraid to go over there,” said six-year-old Amber Barkley. “My neighbor Tommy said one time a boy went over there to get his baseball and the man inside folded him right up into a hat. I don’t want to get caught by the hat man. I am going to grow up to be a firetruck.”

As of press time a young boy was slowly walking towards the porch after being dared to touch it by his friends who could be found watching nervously from the bushes in the yard across street.

CIA CONTRACTORS POTENTIAL SOURCE BEHIND LATEST WIKILEAKS RELEASE

2017-03-08T22:13:00.000-08:00

CIA contractors likely breached security and handed over documents about the agency's use of hacking tools to anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

Two officials speaking on condition of anonymity said intelligence agencies have been aware since the end of last year of the breach, which led to WikiLeaks releasing thousands of pages of information on its website on Tuesday.

According to the documents, Central Intelligence Agency hackers could get into Apple Inc iPhones, devices running Google's Android software and other gadgets in order to capture text and voice messages before they were encrypted with sophisticated software.

The White House said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump was "extremely concerned" about the CIA security breach that led to the WikiLeaks release.

"Anybody who leaks classified information will be held to the highest degree of law," spokesman Sean Spicer said.

The two officials told Reuters they believed the published documents about CIA hacking techniques used between 2013 and 2016 were authentic.

One of the officials with knowledge of the investigation said companies that are contractors for the CIA have been checking to see which of their employees had access to the material that WikiLeaks published, and then going over their computer logs, emails and other communications for any evidence of who might be responsible.

On Tuesday in a press release, WikiLeaks itself said the CIA had "lost control" of an archive of hacking methods and it appeared to have been circulated "among former U.S. government hackers and contractors in an unauthorized manner, one of whom has provided WikiLeaks with portions of the archive."

The CIA, which is the United States' civilian foreign intelligence service, declined to comment on the authenticity of purported intelligence documents.

The agency said in a statement that its mission was to collect foreign intelligence abroad "to protect America from terrorists, hostile nation states and other adversaries" and to be "innovative, cutting-edge, and the first line of defense in protecting this country from enemies abroad."

The CIA is legally prohibited from surveillance inside the United States and "does not do so", the statement added.

Contractors Must Be 'Loyal To America'

A U.S. government source familiar with the matter said it would be normal for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the CIA both to open investigations into such leaks. U.S. officials previously have confirmed that prosecutors in Alexandria, Virginia for years have been conducting a federal grand jury investigation of WikiLeaks and its personnel.

A spokesman for the prosecutors declined to comment on the possibility of that probe being expanded. It is not clear if the investigation of the latest CIA leaks is part of the probe.

Contractors have been revealed as the source of sensitive government information leaks in recent years, most notably Edward Snowden and Harold Thomas Martin, both employed by consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton while working for the National Security Agency.

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California and a Democrat on the intelligence committee, said the government needed to stop the breaches.

"I think we really need to take a look at the contractor portion of the employee workforce, because you have to be loyal to America to work for an intelligence agency, otherwise don't do it," Feinstein said.

Both U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives intelligence committees have either opened or are expected to open inquiries into the CIA breach, congressional officials said.

Some cyber security experts and technology companies have criticized the government for opting to exploit rather than disclose software vulnerabilities, though an interagency review process set up under former President Barack Obama was intended to err on the side of disclosure.

Those concerns would grow if U.S. authorities did not notify companies that CIA documents describing various hacking techniques had been compromised.

Apple, Alphabet Inc's Google, Cisco Systems Inc and Oracle Corp did not immediately respond when asked if they were notified of a CIA breach before WikiLeaks made its files public.

At Apple, none of the vulnerabilities described in the documents provoked a panic, though analysis was continuing, according to a person who spoke with engineers there.

Larger Number of Contractors

One reason the investigation is focused on a potential leak by contractors rather than for example a hack by Russian intelligence, another official said, is that so far there is no evidence that Russian intelligence agencies tried to exploit any of the leaked material before it was published.

One European official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the WikiLeaks material could in fact lead to closer cooperation between European intelligence agencies and U.S. counterparts, which share concerns about Russian intelligence operations.

U.S. intelligence agencies have accused Russia of seeking to tilt last year's U.S. presidential election in Trump's favor, including by hacking into Democratic Party emails. Moscow has denied the allegation.

One major security problem was that the number of contractors with access to information with the highest secrecy classification has "exploded" because of federal budget constraints, the first U.S. official said.

U.S. intelligence agencies have been unable to hire additional permanent staff needed to keep pace with technological advances such as the "internet of things" that connects cars, home security and heating systems and other devices to computer networks, or to pay salaries competitive with the private sector, the official said.

Reuters could not immediately verify the contents of the published documents.
