CELEBRATING SUCCESS AWARDS 2011

Lagat held its annual "Celebrating Success" event on Friday 4th Novemebr 2011 at the Atrium, Lindum Business Park.
The event is organised to celebrate the success of achieving learners from the previous 12 months with all achievers receiving invites to the event to receive certificates and lunch.

Presenting certificates to the learners for this event was Stephen Phillips, Member of Parliament for Sleaford and North Hykeham, a staunch supporter of education and providers of training.

Achievers were called up by Hannah Spencer, Managing Director of LAGAT and presented with a tied certificate noting their achievement. More than 127 people attended the event including employers and local businesses in support of the learners achievements.

Achievements had been gained on Apprenticeship, Advanced Apprenticeship or part of the Governments "Train to Gain" schemes in occupational areas such as Teaching & Learning, Retail, Commercial Enterprise, IT, Management, Business and Hospitality.

Special Awards were given to the following categories for employers:

Lincoln's Most Supportive Employer: Lace Housing

Most Supportive School : Trent Valley Academy

North Kesteven District's Most Supportive Employer : Crazy Bongos

Best Employer of Apprenticeships : Ringrose Law

LAGAT team up with AAT for Accountancy Quals

We are proud to offer qualifications in Accountancy through the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), who are arguably the best known british accountancy awarding body.

We have rolled out the following qualification routes:

The Outlook for 2011/12

Sunny is the answer!

The Tentercroft Learning Centre

LAGAT has a training and learning centre on Tentercroft Street in the centre of Lincoln. The Tentercroft Learning Centre (TLC) offers foundation learning courses for young people (16-18) who wish to move into an apprenticeship, these courses give the learners an insight into qualifications, soft life skills and basic literacy/numeracy.

The TLC also offers IT based training free of charge as part of the UKOnline program, the program is open to all and allows users the ability to learn basic computing skills such as using a keyboard, mouse, using a word processing program, setting up a mail account and so on. The facility also gives users shortcuts to basic online government assistance like benefits calculators.

Some latest HR related announcements.
From October 2011, the National Minimum Wage will increase: _

The National Minimum Wage is to increase by 15p an hour to £6.08 in October, benefiting almost a million workers, the Government has announced.
Ministers said they had accepted recommendations from the Low Pay Commission, giving a new adult rate of £6.08, while the statutory wage for 18-20-year-olds will increase by 6p to £4.98 an hour. The rate for 16-17-year-olds will increase by 4p to £3.68 an hour and the rate for apprentices will increase by 10p to £2.60 an hour.
Business Secretary Vince Cable said: "More than 890,000 of Britain's lowest-paid workers will gain from these changes. They are appropriate, reflecting the current economic uncertainty while at the same time protecting the UK's lowest-paid workers.

Default Retirement Age

The Coalition government announced on 13 January 2011 that the default retirement age would be abolished with effect from 1 October 2011. The procedures as set out in Schedule 6 of the Age Regulations, which gives employees the right to request to work beyond retirement age and the employer a duty to consider, will also be repealed from 6 April 2011.

Employers will still be able to operate an independently determined compulsory retirement age after the DRA has been fully abolished, although they will have to objectively justify it. A compulsory retirement age will have to demonstrate a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

Employers wishing to retain a compulsory retirement age will therefore have to consider the matter very carefully and ensure that they have a legitimate basis for doing so coupled with good evidence. Even where an employer is able to identify a legitimate aim, the test will also require them to consider whether there are less discriminatory ways of achieving that same aim.

Transitional Provisions
The last day for an employer to give six months notice is 30 March 2011. If the intended retirement age is before 1 October 2011 and the right to request procedure is followed, then dismissal on the grounds of retirement will be automatically fair and not discriminatory.
Between 1 April 2011 and 5 April 2011 employers can use the short notice provision to give less than six months’ (but more than 2 weeks’) notice. If the intended retirement age is before 1 October 2011 and the employer considers any request to continue working, dismissal on the grounds of retirement will be potential fair.

LAGAT Celebrate Success

More than 120 people were welcomed to the Atrium, Lindum Business Park to celebrate the success of 70+ achieving learners.
The achievers were presented with a bound certificate from the MP for Lincoln, Karl McCartney.

The achievements included awards at levels 1 to 4 from a divesre occupational areas list which included Teaching & Learning, Management, Team Leading, Hospitality, Customer Service, Business Administration, Health & Safety and Travel & Tourism.
All visitors were welcomed and attended for a great lunch.

Latest News

LAGAT are now in full flow with the change over from direct NVQ to the newer QCF Award, Certificate & Diploma system.
The new system still allows for NVQ style accreditation but means that each unit now taken as part of an award is given a unit credit value. This means that providing you chose units that total the required ammount for an award, you can use some of these units toward your next level, ie: Award to certificate, or certificate to diploma, this means a reduction in time toi move up levels (such as level 2 to 3 as was with NVQ).

APPRENTICESHIP FRAMEWORK

Did you know that an Apprenticeship Framework can give you as many as 5 individual academic and work based qualifications!
Every framework starts with a main qualification such as an NVQ and is supported by up to 2 life skill qualifications (Key Skills) in Math and English, and most frameworks aslo have a technical certificate to prove knowledge in the subject area.
You can also get paid whilst progressing through your qualification, many Apprentices are taken on as full employees following their Apprenticeships!
