We are approaching summer and think we have found the perfect wine for the season. This wine is a unique sparkling red wine called Alborada. A 2009 vintage from Fattoria Il Gambero, a quaint winery from Southwest Lombardia. Operated by Vittorio Ferrario and his wife, the winery is very small, and has a miniscule production yield. The micro-climate of this particular region of Lombardia, which makes this wine unique and easy-going. The Alborada is slightly sparkling, fruit-forward, fresh, and should be served slightly chilled. The perfect combination with a hot summer day. The wine is made with 100% Croatina grape, and would match perfectly with seafood appetizers, cold-cuts, and carne cruda.

If you frequent the bar, you know that we have poured Pasquale’s Primitivos by the glass and they are fantastic! These are elegant renderings of the Primitivo grape, ranging from a light, almost Rosato style red wine (Teres), to more medium and full bodied expressions. Yet, all of the cuvées are the product of Pasquale’s deft touch, which is to say, his ability to not touch, and allow the wines to express their terroirs. Una Breve Presentazione della Nostra Cantina

- Storica cantina a conduzione familiare da 5 generazioni situata sulla sommità di una collina rocciosa a Sud di Gioia del Colle nel mezzo della Puglia – Sud Italia.

- Prima cantina a imbottigliare nel 1987 il Gioia del Colle D.O.C. Primitivo in purezza.

- Fondatrice del Consorzio di Tutela dei Vini D.O.C. Gioia del Colle.

- Prima a realizzare nel 2007 una degustazione verticale di un Gioia del Colle D.O.C. Primitivo, con 10 annate della nostra “Riserva Fatalone” dal 1994 al 2005, dimostrando l’incredibile longevità del nostro Primitivo.

- La nostra limitata produzione di vini di qualità viene realizzata esclusivamente con le nostre uve autoctone di proprietà Primitivo e Greco.

- I nostri vini vengono affinati con l’applicazione della musico-terapia, interamente destinati alla bottiglia e certificati Biologici da I.C.E.A., anche secondo i canoni del N.O.P. americano, 85% per export.

- Il nostro processo produttivo è 100% ecosostenibile: senza l’uso di irrigazione e con Zero emissioni di CO2, essendo alimentato dalla sola energia rinnovabile del sole.

- Si tratta inoltre di una produzione a Km-Zero trasformando esclusivamente le uve dei nostri vigneti collocati tutti intorno alla cantina.

A Short Overview of Our Winery

- Historical 5th-generation small family winery situated on a rocky hilltop to the South of Gioia del Colle in the middle of Puglia – Southern Italy.

- First winery to bottle in 1987 the Gioia del Colle D.O.C. Primitivo as a single grape variety.

- Founder member of the Consortium for the Protection of the Wines D.O.C. Gioia del Colle

- First winery to carry out in 2007 a vertical tasting of a Gioia del Colle D.O.C. Primitivo, with 10 vintages of our own “Fatalone Riserva” from 1994 to 2005, giving proof of the incredible long life of our Primitivo.

- Our limited high-quality wine production is made just with our own locally grown autochthonous grapes Primitivo and Greco.

- Our wines are aged with the application of music-therapy, entirely bottled and certified Organic by I.C.E.A. also in accordance with the American N.O.P. standards, 85% exported

- Our production process is 100% sustainable: without use of irrigation and with Zero CO2 emission, powered only by solar energy.

- Ours is a Zero-Km production by processing just our own grapes located all around our cellar.

Tomorrow will be the Catholic celebration of Easter, which will be observed by millions of Christians around the world. I thought that we would make the connection between Easter and wine. I have found an appealing article about a nonprofit organization from the state of North Carolina. Their goal is to provide clean water to areas in the developing world, where they lack sufficient and clean water. The organization has had numerous wine events and have taken the money from those fundraisers to invest in clean water projects. It`s a very dark wine, blackish-purple at the center, clear garnet at the edge.

It offers appetizing warm aromas redolent of cherry flavor enveloped by soft tannins and finishes with a tart, lemon-squirt acidity.

A wine that, like many of its Italian brethren’s is made to go with food.

Its vibrant flavors will also neatly complement that quintessential dish from Emilia-Romagna, tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce.

Next weekend Vinitaly the largest wine show in the world will begin in Verona, Italy. I found a few articles very interesting from their website, which discuss the growing presence of organic and biodynamic wine in the industry, as well as growing exports of Italian wine all over the world. I am particularly pleased that we finally have a focus on organic and biodynamic wine because such wine is generally driven by small producers. Organic and biodynamic wine in my judgement will be a large segment in future years of the industry. Regarding the growing sales of Italian wine I find it encouraging but personally think the merit is also in the popularity of Italian cuisine.
