There's just something about a man in uniform that revs my engine! Firefighters, medics, police officers, soldiers, Marines—I could go on and on. One of my favorite things to do while building the world of the Grabbed series was to drool over—ahem, I mean research—military and SWAT uniforms.

I settled on really intimidating black and gray garb for the Harcos sky warriors. I wanted them to wear clothing that looks harsh and strikes fear in the hearts of the civilian populations they police. When Hallie gets her first look at Vicious, the effect is instant…

So is that why our favorite romance authors have us clicking to buy their next novel faster than we can type in our credit card number? Some might argue that it’s easier to have a book boyfriend (. . . or several) than a real one. Book boyfriends never leave the toilet seat up, or toss their dirty socks everywhere. They always seem to know just the right thing to say, even if it’s something that going to break your heart. And a book boyfriend never cheats on you because he exists solely to make your heart go pitter patter between the pages.

Cajun Food

One of the things I love best about visiting Louisiana is eating Cajun food! Oh, yeah. My husband was born in Louisiana so we have gumbo a lot and I love things like Shrimp Etoufee and Jambalaya. And if you make it to New Orleans, check out the beignets at Cafe Du Monde. Man I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!
I don't cook often, but when I do, I make enough to last the week. Some time-saving tricks I use are when I'm cutting up celery and onions, I cut enough for two batches of whatever I want to cook and freeze half. I also do this with a whole chicken. I'll boil it up, debone and split it so that I have some for cooking right then and freeze the rest for a quick chicken noodle soup or gumbo. If you don't want to take the time to boil a chicken, buy a rotisserie chicken on your way home from work and debone that savory delight and use it. When you write a book based in Louisiana, you have to have some mention of the food. In VOODOO ON THE BAYOU, Miz Mozelle is constantly treating the neighborhood to fresh beignets. Now, that's something I haven't tried making, but I sample them every time I'm in N'Awlins! Happy reading and happy eating!

Why You Should Always Follow Your Beverage Cravings

THE ELSKER SAGA began on a road trip along the Oregon coast. Thanks to a caffeine craving, I found myself at one of those little drive through coffee huts, chatting with a friendly, college-aged barista. Before I drove away, I stopped to look. A sign proudly welcomed me to Nehalem, Oregon, Population 250. A solitary red light flashed from a wire, directing traffic along the town’s main road (which doubled as US Highway 101). The forest was to my left, the river straight ahead, and somewhere behind the residential neighborhood on my right was the Pacific Ocean. I snapped a picture of the coffee shop, and I’m so glad that I did. Because that was the moment ELSKER was born.

When I was asked to write a guest post for Reading Between the Wines to promote my new book, To Katie With Love, I decided I’d better start by doing a little research. And how does one research writing a blog that celebrates wine without first having a glass…or two? Of course, those who know me well know I’m not exactly a skilled drinker. I’m the girl who gets tipsy on half a wine cooler, then drunk-dials her ex-husband or her husband’s ex-wife to tell them exactly what they can…well, let’s not go there. But as I started to feel the warm and cozy effects of my cabernet blend, skillfully chosen by my wine snob husband, I began to put myself into the shoes of my main character, Katie, to analyze her thoughts on love, sex, and having too much to drink.

Katie James is so much like me, and yet so far removed. On one hand, she has all of my clumsy tendencies. Actually, Indiana and gypsies have a long and frightening history that I only recently discovered. In the town of Crown Point, there is a cemetery which holds the graves of a group of Romney gypsies and it is one of the famous ghost stories of Indiana.

Flirting Checklist.

When I saw this on my list of blogs to write for Extreme Love’s blog tour, my first reaction was to panic. My gaze snapped up to my roommate and BFF, eyes round in horror and said, “You won’t believe what I need to write about.”
“What?” she asked.
“They want me to give a flirting checklist.”
Her face screwed up in an oh-hell-girl expression. “You’re going to have to do some research.”
In which I burst into a fit of laughter. She knows me well. But it calmed me and I saw how I needed to approach this blog…with honesty. You see, I can’t flirt. It’s a running joke with anyone who knows me. Flirting and my personality just don’t mix. I have more of a chance of grabbing a guy’s attention with one of my off-colored remarks than trying to be flirtatious. I just expressed this to my friend, and she started nodding and laughing. I accepted my flirting skills were nil a long time ago. I can’t be seductive either.
Let me give you an example. A couple of years ago, on my birthday, me and a few girlfriends had a few too many to drinks and the camera came out. We were posing “seductively” for the camera. At least, they were. Me? Yeah, the next morning when we came across my picture the house erupted into hilarity. It was that BAD. I swear, if I could find it, I would share it. So I don’t “flirt” in the traditional sense. So I’m going to share Abby Niles’ flirting checklist.

Toni: Thanks so much for having me!

Lexi: Half Moon Hill is book six in your Destiny series, and there has been some apprehension about the main character Anna. We met her in Willow Springs, not exactly a character that made you fall in love with her. Did you know Anna’s story when you wrote Willow Springs?

Toni: I knew inklings of Anna’s story when I was writing WILLOW SPRINGS, but mostly only that it would revolve around her fixing up and opening the Bed & Breakfast outside town, which I thought would be super fun setting – and I really enjoyed writing about it. Sorry to hear you didn’t fall in love with Anna. Some readers had that reaction, while others were fine with her.

Lexi: Anna is the kind of girl we love to hate, she tried to come between the budding love between Logan and Amy. Were you worried about getting readers to fall in love with Anna and connect with her?
