What did I tell you? The pope sides with the poor, believes things that I don't. Speaks his mind. Speaks out. Is present. Speaks the human language. We have another hero and villain. Keep your cool. He is like you me.

We are living in a time when a large segment of Americans, maybe even the majority, when looking at this cartoon from Tom Toles (© The Washington Post), is of the opinion that Supreme Court justices interpret the constitution based on their political philosophy. And, of course, they and all judges do and have always done so. What is new is that this is becoming an issue as it threatens the

Why give credit to a party that doesn't want to work with the twice officially elected president of the United States? The difference between Democrats and Republicans is that one party honors the outcome of the electoral process, which leads to a good feeling when they are in opposition, while the other party can't govern and they don't even want to. Americans, this is serious stuff. We want to

On May 29 this year, the soccer teams of Afghanistan and Maldives played a game in which an Afghan player scored on penalty kick that will remind Dutch soccer fans of the way Abe Lenstra supposedly scored a penalty kick in the 1950s while tying his shoes and kicking the ball easily past the unsuspecting keeper into the net. Yesterday, Thomas Müller tried the fake fall during a free kick

Many people have reported a religious experience when being near death during an operation or as a result of a drug overdose. The sensation of rising up into the sky is often recalled as synonymous with leaving the world behind. This 'out of body' experience leaves a lasting imprint on those who experienced it and is long after recalled as having been very significant in their lives.  By

The people are in favor of the budget deal. Finally getting rid of the public acrimony. We are making deals again under the table. Very European. But then, all deals are done in private. Very human. That's what a deal is about. Let's make sure it works. How can you measure progress, assuming we know what would  constitute progress. If we can, we have a business. We'll be the judge.

Great way to start. Make a budget. Then go on and start talking politics again. Or take a few moments to let it all sink in. The president was chatting it up with the leader from Denmark the other day in South Africa. Having fun making selfies. With her in it, of course. Also Cameron, to make it not too obvious. Is everything OK between Barack and Michelle?  Boehner and Ryan played this

It's also Sinterklaas' birthday, or at least the eve of. I prepared 83 simple Word documents during the late afternoon today. Don't ask me why. At work, in some ways, we live in the past.  Mandela died today. I consider him the most amazing person of my lifetime. Not that I saw him, or was even anywhere near. Q: When you are employed by someone else, you accept the premise that management and employees work together to achieve the same goal. Working for the benefit of all is usually also a shared goal in the communities we live in. But the farther you travel, the harder it is to get all people on the same page. Why is this particularly true in America?  A: It is only natural that we tend to

What a great example of how not to be. Circle your wagons instead of reaching out to find a solution. The way we have done all these years. A bit like a revolution, without the bloodshed. Very inconvenient, even if you don't feel the pain. But also a warning shot to draw a line in the sand. We will always be against universal healthcare, however good it is. We are insane. Everything you say has to be true. It can be a joke, a parody, a  celebration, whatever, but you respect the truth. Maybe not just in advertising. In life. Truth is not dogma, but the way you see it, with a willingness to check pro and con, if you know what the difference is. Some acknowledgement that there is more to life than you. And a determination to getting better all the time.

That's how Chris Mathews described the way Republicans negotiate, comparing it with how people were treated under communism. The party always one step ahead of everyone else, in all aspects of life. Always true, always correct, always the last word. Obey me. Forever.

The problem with the GOP is that the people who are considered "the establishment", those who are normally in charge, are not setting the ideological agenda for the party. Leadership without leaders. Cruz sucked up all the energy. To keep him in line you have to speak louder. Boehner does not have that ability. He is an empty bag. Has no story, not even a beginning. There are good arguments for
