Although I didn’t explore the famous street food scene this time, what I did discover were meals that tasted like home - rich in heritage, flavor, and heart.

From fragrant rice plates and soul-warming soups to savory noodles and indulgent desserts, Indonesian cuisine offered a depth I’ll never forget. Here’s what made my culinary journey in Jakarta unforgettable including some of my all-time favorites.

Before devouring the mains and beloved local staples, I kicked-off my Jakarta food journey with a few classic street-side appetizers. I started with bakwan, a crispy vegetable fritter made from shredded carrots, cabbage, and batter, deep-fried until golden. It’s crunchy, savory, and often served with a spicy chili dip that adds the perfect punch.

Another favorite is fried tofu (tahu goreng) - simple yet satisfying. Whether it’s plain tofu cubes or the stuffed version with noodles and veggies, it's usually paired with sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) and sliced chilies. Light, flavorful, and widely available, these starters are the perfect intro before moving on to the heartier dishes Jakarta is known for.

Sop Buntut - My Ultimate Indonesian Comfort Food

No dish captured the heart of my Jakarta trip like Sop Buntut, Indonesia’s legendary oxtail soup. It’s my ever-favorite dish, and this time, I made it a mission to try it where locals said it’s best.
Served piping hot in a rich, clear beef broth, the soup was loaded with slow-cooked oxtail pieces, carrots, potatoes, and celery topped with fried shallots and a squeeze of lime. The meat was unbelievably tender, falling off the bone, and the broth was deep with flavor, thanks to the blend of nutmeg, cloves, garlic, and peppercorns.
Some places even offered it grilled after boiling, adding a charred, smoky note that made it even more irresistible.

Aside from sop buntut, Indonesia’s soup game is strong - especially soto, a category of spiced, aromatic soups.

Soto Betawi - Jakarta’s Creamy Classic

Made with beef and coconut milk, soto Betawi is thick, creamy, and incredibly fragrant with rich spices like lemongrass and galangal coming through in every bite.

Soto Mie Bogor - A Hearty, Crunchy, Spicy Bowl of West Javanese Soul
One of the most unforgettable dishes I had on this trip was Soto Mie Bogor - a unique noodle soup originally from the cool highlands of Bogor, but now widely loved and served in many parts of Jakarta.
This isn’t your average soto. Soto Mie Bogor features a fragrant, spiced beef broth, egg noodles, and slices of beef or cow trotters (kikil). What sets it apart is the addition of crispy fried risoles (spring rolls filled with vermicelli and vegetables), shredded cabbage, tomatoes, and a spicy-sour sambal that adds real punch. It’s rich, refreshing, crunchy, and spicy - all in one bite.
I first fell in love with Soto Mie Bogor the very first time I tried it, so getting to enjoy it again on this trip was an absolute delight - every bit as delicious as I remembered.

Satay (Sate): Grilled Goodness

Sate Ayam with Peanut Sauce

Charcoal-grilled chicken skewers smothered in sweet-savory peanut sauce, typically served with rice cakes (lontong) - it’s Indonesia’s answer to comfort food on a stick.

Possibly the most refreshing discovery this trip: Es Teler. This chilled dessert combines shaved ice, coconut milk, condensed milk, avocado, banana, jackfruit, and colorful jellies into one glorious bowl. It’s sweet, tropical, and perfect for Jakarta’s humid afternoons.

My trip to this magical city was a mission accomplished — a self-guided Harry Potter trail to visit the very spots that inspired J.K. Rowling as she wrote one of the most beloved book series of all time.

If you're planning your own DIY Harry Potter tour in Edinburgh, here are the must-visit sights that shaped the wizarding world — straight from Rowling's imagination and into real-life locations.

The Elephant House Café – Where Magic Was Born

Known as the “birthplace of Harry Potter,” The Elephant House is one of the most iconic stops on the trail. J.K. Rowling frequently wrote here during the early days of the series, sitting by the back window with a direct view of Edinburgh Castle – widely believed to be her inspiration for Hogwarts.

Inside the café, the walls are adorned with Rowling memorabilia, photos, and write-ups about her humble beginnings. The bathroom, surprisingly, is also a must-see — it’s covered in graffiti and tributes from Potter fans around the world, leaving behind messages of love and thanks to the author.

I even had the honour of chatting with the café owner, Mr. David Taylor, a warm and down-to-earth man who shared stories of Rowling’s early writing days. Fun fact: he's married to a Filipina and has a special fondness for Filipino visitors!

Just behind The Elephant House is the historic Greyfriars Kirkyard, a quiet graveyard that hides some spine-tingling connections to the Harry Potter universe. Here, you’ll find gravestones that bear familiar names – most notably Thomas Riddell, believed to have inspired the name of the dark wizard, Tom Riddle (a.k.a. Lord Voldemort).

While we didn’t have time to locate every gravestone, we managed to find Professor McGonagall’s namesake — a thrilling discovery for any fan of the series. The kirkyard is eerie, mysterious, and dripping with the kind of gothic atmosphere that feels right out of the wizarding world.

When it comes to dining with a view in Singapore, the challenge isn’t finding restaurants with a scenic backdrop - it’s finding those that combine breathtaking vistas with genuinely good food. Thankfully, in this food-lover's city, there are a few gems that offer both.

One of the most popular areas for such an experience is One Fullerton, located near Marina Bay. This stretch offers panoramic views of the Singapore skyline, Marina Bay Sands, and the iconic Merlion, making it a top destination for both tourists and locals. But not every restaurant here is worth your time or money.

Here are four restaurants I’ve personally tried at One Fullerton and my honest thoughts on whether they're worth visiting for both the food and the view.

Brewerkz One Fullerton

Type: Bistro-style, Craft Beer Bar

Best for: Casual hangouts, family dinners, group gatherings

View: Excellent Marina Bay views from the alfresco area

Brewerkz is a go-to for craft beer lovers, with a laid-back vibe perfect for large groups and families. The menu offers classic bistro fare, including finger foods and hearty mains.

What to Try:

Satay platter
Baby back ribs
Focaccilla

While the food choices are a bit limited, they do hit the spot for a casual night out. The desserts, however, didn’t quite impress - definitely not the highlight here.

Verdict: Worth a visit for the beers and view. Food is decent but not standout.

OverEasy

Type: American Diner

Best for: Casual date nights, laid-back dinner

View: Stunning waterside seating with direct Marina Bay views

OverEasy delivers a nostalgic American diner experience with a Singaporean twist. The ambiance especially at the outdoor seating area is one of the best in the area.

What to Try:

Beer Can Chicken
To Die for Burger and Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger
Slow Cooked Beef Cheek

They have a much better food selection compared to neighboring spots, and the service is generally consistent.

Verdict: Good food, great atmosphere - definitely a place to revisit.

Jypsy at One Fullerton

Type: Japanese Fusion

Best for: Aesthetic lovers, casual dining

View: Decent, though not as open as others nearby

Jypsy promises a chic, modern Japanese fusion experience, and the décor certainly lives up to that. However, the food fell short during my visit.

What to Expect:

Unique fusion dishes with Instagram-worthy plating
Underwhelming taste and portion sizes

While the presentation was great, the flavor and value didn’t meet expectations, and I haven’t felt compelled to return since.
Verdict: Beautiful space, but food experience was just ok if not underwhelming.

Palm Beach Seafood

Type: Local Seafood Cuisine

Best for: Entertaining guests, tourist-friendly local fare

View: Unobstructed views of Marina Bay and Merlion Park

Palm Beach Seafood is where you go when you want to impress a visitor with local cuisine and a postcard-worthy view. It’s famous for its chili crab, but you’ll pay a premium for the setting.

What to Try:

Chili Crab (of course)
Black Pepper Crab
Fried Mantou

That said, locals often skip it due to the high prices, opting for equally delicious chili crab in heartland areas instead.
Verdict: Worth it for the experience, not everyday dining. Great for tourists or special occasions.

Is Dining with a View in Singapore Worth It?

Absolutely - but it depends on what you're looking for. If you're after a romantic evening, scenic spot for guests, or just want to relax by the bay, One Fullerton has great options. Just remember: the view comes at a price, and not all restaurants here deliver the same quality of food.

I’ve noticed that the same questions and misconceptions still come up, especially online. So I figured it’s time to bring the topic back, give it a little update, and clear the air once again. Whether you're a longtime fan or still on the fence, this refreshed post dives into what’s true, what’s not, and why instant noodles aren't the villains they’re often made out to be.

Instant Noodles: Separating Facts from Fiction

Instant noodles have become a global staple found in homes, dorm rooms, and office pantries across continents. From Asia to the Americas, this convenient comfort food has won over taste buds and busy schedules alike. In Asia, they’re practically a household essential. If you’ve ever dreamed of Paris - the kind that lives in postcards, perfume ads, or poetry - it’s all real. Paris is just as magical as you imagine, but it’s the experience of the city that makes it unforgettable.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Paris a few times over the years, and each trip has given me something new to fall in love with. My husband and I even renewed our vows here for our 15th wedding anniversary - an experience that made Paris feel more like a part of our story.

Beyond the tourist crowds and Instagrammable spots, there are moments that truly stay with you. If you're planning your first trip or simply dreaming from afar, these are the highlights that made my time in Paris truly meaningful.
If I could recommend 10 things for you to do in Paris, this would be the list.

1. Picnic Under the Eiffel Tower - Keep the Magic, Skip the Queue

Yes, the Eiffel Tower is iconic. But instead of lining up to go up, I recommend sitting under it. Pick up a baguette, some cheese, fruit, and maybe a little bottle of wine. If you do one thing in Paris, let it be this: eat your way through it. Croissants that flake like snow. Pistachio éclairs that taste like a secret. Duck confit so rich and tender you forget to speak. Cheese that demands silence and respect.

I didn’t take a formal food tour - I just wandered. The best meals came from trusting my senses: the smell of butter from a side street boulangerie, or the little chalkboard menu that only locals seemed to notice.

But one of the most Parisian food experiences? Sitting at a café. Find a sidewalk table, order a café crème or a glass of wine, and just… stay. No rush. Watch the world pass. Waiters are in no hurry, and neither should you be. I spent over an hour at a tiny café along the street, people-watching while nibbling on a warm French pastry and sipping hot chocolate.

If you’ve ever walked past Butter & Cream at Lau Pa Sat, you’ve probably seen the long queues forming in front of their stall. Like many, I was intrigued — long queues usually mean good food in Singapore. It wasn’t until I stopped by their Causeway Point outlet that I finally gave their treats a try. I sampled their well-loved egg tarts, several muffin flavors, and a slice of pistachio burnt basque cheesecake. Here’s my honest take on Butter & Cream’s baked goods.

The Famous Tarts: Egg, Chocolate, Blueberry, and Salted Egg Yolk

Let’s start with what they're best known for: their tarts. I tried four varieties - egg tart, blueberry, chocolate, and the more adventurous salted egg yolk.

Across the board, the base tart shell and custard have a consistent profile: mildly sweet, buttery, with a custard that’s smooth, not grainy, nor too eggy. The crust offers just the right bite - not too hard, not too soft, not too crumbly and doesn’t overwhelm the fillings.

Surprisingly, even the salted egg yolk tart is well-balanced. Often, this flavor can be too strong or too salty, but Butter & Cream achieves a harmony between the savory note and the creamy custard. It's buttery, rich, yet not cloying, making it easy to finish in one sitting.

This same harmony carries over into the blueberry and chocolate versions. They’re flavorful without being overly sweet, and the extra ingredients (fruit or chocolate) enhance the base rather than mask it.

Verdict: The tarts are where Butter & Cream truly shines. These are easily the type of treats you’d return for.

Muffins: Marshmallow, Kit Kat Dream, and Bananarama

I also tried a few of their muffin flavors - Marshmallow, Kit Kat Dream, and Bananarama.

The texture? Light and pleasant, not too dense or dry. They’re also modest on sweetness, much like the tarts. While they’re enjoyable, I did find them lacking in flavor complexity. They didn’t offer that extra punch or twist that would make them stand out in Singapore’s competitive bakery scene.

They’re good, but unlike the tarts, I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way for them again.

Verdict: A decent pick if you like your muffins simple and not too sweet — but don’t expect fireworks.

Pistachio Burnt Basque Cheesecake

Lastly, I had a slice of their Pistachio Burnt Basque Cheesecake. Burnt Basque cheesecakes have become trendy for a reason, and Butter & Cream’s version is a solid take - creamy, rich, with a nice caramelized top.

However, the pistachio flavor was quite subtle. I was hoping for more of a nutty, aromatic punch that really highlights the pistachio, but it fell just a little short on that front.

Verdict: Good overall, but might leave pistachio lovers wanting a bit more boldness.

Overall Take: Subtle Sweets, With a Tart That Shines

Butter & Cream offers well-crafted pastries with a subtle sweetness, making them ideal for those who prefer treats that are not overly rich or indulgent. If you lean toward delicate, balanced flavors, you’ll likely enjoy what they have to offer.

That said, if you’re chasing big, bold dessert flavors, their selection may feel a bit too restrained — except for the tarts, which truly hit the sweet spot in terms of texture, taste, and balance.

Even though the weather was rainy and gray, the city's charm broke through effortlessly. 1. Marvel at the Church of St. Leodegar (Hofkirche)

We started our exploration at the church of St. Leodegar, famously known for its striking twin spires. It's not just an architectural masterpiece, it's a serene, spiritual place that reflects the deep religious roots at the region. Even on a gloomy day, the church stood majestically against the misty backdrop.

2. Paying Respects at the Lion Monument

One of the highlights of our family vacation in Switzerland was finally visiting Zermatt - a destination that had long lived in my travel dreams. Nestled in the heart of the Alps and home to the iconic Matterhorn, Zermatt feels like pure magic from the moment you arrive.

Surrounded by towering peaks and charming car-free streets, the town is a picturesque blend of natural beauty and cozy Swiss charm. Whether you're savoring a hearty alpine meal with panoramic mountain views, strolling through the storybook village, or riding the Gornergrat Railway for an unforgettable view of the Alps, Zermatt captures your heart instantly. Even in summer, it felt like stepping into a real-life snow globe.

Experiencing this alpine wonder with my family made it all the more special. We hiked, snapped countless photos and soaked in the grandeur around us. It was a moment of joy, gratitude, and awe - checking off a true bucket list dream in the best way possible.

The Journey to Zermatt

As with most places in Switzerland, the scenic journey is half the experience. The ride to Zermatt from Gornergrat was nothing short of spectacular - snowcapped peaks, cascading waterfalls, rushing rivers, charming alpine houses - every turn was a feast for the eyes and one for the memory bank.

Visiting Switzerland had always been on my bucket list - especially Zermatt, and getting to experience it with my family during a European summer was nothing short of magical. From the alpine charm of Zermatt to the cosmopolitan beauty of Zurich and Lucerne, this trip was filled with postcard- perfect moments, cultural treats, and unforgettable memories.

We made Zurich our home base for the trip, thanks to its excellent transport connections and convenient locations. From there, we explored some of the country's most scenic cities including Zermatt and Lucerne, each offering its own charm, culture, and natural beauty. I'll be sharing our Swiss adventures in three parts, beginning with the vibrant and elegant city of Zurich.

Our Swiss Base: Zurich - Gateway to Scenic Adventures

We made Zurich our base for exploring Switzerland, and it was the perfect starting point. Staying at Townhouse Boutique Hotel, just a 5-minute walk from Zurich's main train station - made our daily excursions incredibly convenient. Surrounded by restaurants and just steps away from Bahnhofstrasse (one of the world's most exclusive shopping streets), everything we needed was within easy reach.

Things to Do in Zurich: Self-Guided City Walks & Cultural Indulgence

Zurich is a gem that effortlessly blends old-world charm with modern sophistication. Here's how we enjoyed it:

Wander through Old Town (Altstadt): Get lost in the cobblestone alleys lined with medieval buildings, cafes and boutique stores. It's like stepping back in time.

Fraumünster & St. Peter's Church: Marvel at the stained-glass windows in Fraumünster and the iconic clock face of St. Peter's - the largest in Europe.

Bahnhofstrasse: Ideal for luxury shopping or simply window-shopping, this bustling avenue is must-see.

Lake Zurich: The clean, turquoise water is mesmerizing. If the weather allows, take a refreshing dip or, if you're splurging, rent a yacht for a panoramic cruise.

Swiss Cuisine: Don't leave without savoring fondue, raclette, rosti and their juicy veal sausages - arguably some of the best in the world. And of course, Swiss chocolate is a must!

Chocolate Lover's Paradise: A visit to the Lindt Home of Chocolate and Laderach gave us a delicious dose of indulgence and souvenirs to bring home.

Niederdorf & Lindenhof Park: Charming spots that were made even more famous by the K-drama Crash Landing on You, being one of its filming locations in Switzerland.

Zurich is easily one of the cleanest and most aesthetically pleasing cities we've ever visited. The fresh air, pristine streets, and scenic lake views make it clear why it's consistently ranked among the world's most livable cities.

If you're looking for a European city that balances elegance with ease, Antwerp might just surprise you. Often overshadowed by Brussels or Bruges, this Belgian city offers its own distinct character, especially in the winter. When I visited, Antwerp greeted me with snowflakes, wet cobblestones, gothic towers, and a calm atmosphere that felt more personal than touristy.

It's known as the diamond capital of the world, but Antwerp shines in more ways than one through its art, architecture, fashion and that unmistakable Belgian spirit of good food and great beer.

First Impressions: A City That Surprises You

The moment I stepped into Antwerpen Centraal, I knew this city had something special. One of the most breathtaking train stations I've seen, it perfectly sets the tone for what Antwerp has to offer - a fusion of grandeur, history, and quiet charm.

When planning a trip through Europe, we often assume we need several days in each city to truly appreciate it. But what if your time is tight and you're just passing through? In one of my visits to Europe, I found myself with only one full day in Brussels, Belgium - and yes, it’s absolutely possible to see the best of this vibrant capital in less than 24 hours.

Why Brussels Works for a One-Day Visit

Brussels is compact, walkable, and surprisingly efficient to explore, especially for travellers who want a taste of Belgium’s culture, food, and history without an extended stay. The city’s key landmarks are clustered close together, making it ideal for a self-paced walking tour - or, if you prefer to save energy, a hop-on-hop-off bus will do the trick.

Must-See Spots in Brussels Within Walking Distance

Grand Place (Grote Markt): Start your day here. The central square is surrounded by ornately gilded buildings that showcase the city’s historic wealth and architectural artistry. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, honestly, jaw-dropping at every turn.

Manneken Pis: Just a short stroll from the Grand Place, this quirky little statue is iconic in its own right. There are also variations of it scattered across the city.

Belgium is known worldwide for its rich culinary offerings, and Brussels gives you the chance to indulge in all the famous bites in one go.

Waffles: These are on another level in Belgium - soft, fluffy, and often topped with chocolate, whipped cream, or fruit. Grab one fresh off a street vendor’s grill.

Fries (Frites): Forget everything you thought you knew about French fries. Belgian frites are crispy, thick-cut, and best enjoyed with a dollop of mayonnaise or spicy sauce.

If you're looking to immerse yourself in a destination that transcends modern definitions of beauty, Myanmar deserves a spot on your travel list. Far beyond the reach of mass tourism, Myanmar remains raw, deeply cultural, and astonishingly kind. During my visit to Yangon, I experienced a country where simplicity reigns, traditions flourish, and a deep spiritual rhythm guides everyday life.

Here's why exploring Myanmar through its culture is the best way to understand its soul.

Yangon: Where Time Slows and Culture Deepens

Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, is often described as chaotic - but to me, it was peacefully unpolished. Life here doesn't race forward; it flows. The people radiate warmth and hospitality that's genuine and unassuming.

The richness of Myanmar isn't measured by skyscrapers or luxury malls. It's in the rhythm of daily rituals, the colorful garments worn with pride, and the golden shimmer of pagodas at dawn.

Cultural Encounters: Longyi, Thanaka and Daily Grace

Two things immediately caught my attention in Yangon: the Longyi and Thanaka. The Longyi, a traditional sarong-like garment is worn by both men and women. Men tie it in front, while women knot theirs at the side. It's more than just clothing; it's a visible tie to heritage and modesty in a world that's rapidly globalizing.

Then there's Thanaka, a yellowish-white paste applied to the face, made from ground tree bark. Used as sun protection, a skin refresher, and even a cosmetic, Thanaka is not just functional - it's symbolic. It's common to see people of all ages with beautifully patterned Thanaka across their cheeks, wearing it with as much pride as a badge of identity.

A Culinary Introduction: Burmese Flavors in Every Bite

One of the most enjoyable ways to connect with a culture is through its cuisine - and Burmese food is a symphony of flavors. My first lunch in Yangon was at the House of Memories, a restaurant with a powerful historical legacy as the former office of General Aung San, a key figure in Myanmar's independence.

Some of the must have dishes in Myanmar: Mohinga, often hailed as the country's unofficial national dish. A flavorful rice noodle soup with fish broth, it's simple yet deeply comforting. Another unforgettable taste was Laphet Thoke, a salad made with fermented tea leaves. It's their version of Korea's Kimchi - fermented, flavorful and a staple on most dining tables.

Burmese cuisine isn't known for overpowering spices. Instead, it delights the senses with texture, aroma, and subtle depth. Dishes often highlight seafood and legumes, blending them into something unexpectedly bold, yet never heavy. It's a foodscape that respects balance and texture more than just heat or fire.

The Shwedagon Pagoda: A Sacred, Soulful Moment

No visit to Yangon is complete without stepping into the sacred grounds of Shwedagon Pagoda. It was here where I had one of the most deeply spiritual experiences of my travel. Towering over the city and glimmering in gold, the pagoda is not just a monument - it's a place where energy shifts.

India Travel Experience: The Contrasts of Mumbai and New Delhi

India is one of those countries that leaves a lasting imprint on every traveler - not just for its beauty and culture, but also for its intensity. When I visited two of the country's biggest and most iconic cities -Mumbai and New Delhi, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions: fascination, discomfort, awe, and curiosity. It's a land of contradictions, where vibrant history and rich traditions sit alongside modern chaos and everyday challenges.

Mumbai vs New Delhi: Same Country, Different Vibes

Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is India's financial and entertainment hub. While it is densely populated and busy, it somehow feels a little more manageable compared to New Delhi, the capital. Delhi, though equally vibrant, felt a lot more intense - more crowded, more chaotic, and at times, more overwhelming. The traffic in New Delhi can be brutal. Loud honking is constant, and crossing the street can be a real challenge. It's not uncommon to hear locals advise against walking alone, especially after dark. In contrast, Mumbai felt slightly more relaxed, even though it shares many of the same issues.

Safety Concerns and Cultural Sensitivities

India is a culturally fascinating destination, but it's not without its challenges, particularly for women travelers. As a visitor, I couldn't help but feel slightly uncomfortable walking the streets alone. There's an ever-present need to stay alert, especially in crowded areas or after sunset. My colleagues advised me not to explore alone after dark, and honestly, I understood why.

Security aside, pollution in Indian cities is another concern. Each time I visit, I find myself dealing with respiratory discomfort - especially in Delhi, where air quality can be difficult to cope with. It's wise to bring a mask or plan your travel during seasons when pollution levels are lower.

Despite these challenges, there is so much to like and learn in India. The people are among the friendliest in the world. Many speak English, making communication relatively easy for travelers. From the Mughal-era architecture in Delhi to the colonial remnants and Bollywood culture in Mumbai, there is always something captivating to see and experience.

The Food: Deep, Rich and Unforgettable

Indian cuisine is one of the highlights of visiting the country. It's complex, savory, and deeply satisfying. My personal favorite? Butter Chicken - the golden standard of Indian comfort food. But beyond that, every dish offers something unique, from spicy street snacks to flavorful biryanis and vegetarian curries. Food in India is more than sustenance - it's a cultural experience. Every bite and every meal feel like a celebration.

Sugar crystals and fennel seeds for a typical after meal munch. A nice mouth freshener and digestive aid. Uniquely better than any sweet candy.

India is not for the faint of heart - it's raw, real, and relentless at times. But that's also what makes it so unforgettable. If you're a traveler looking for authentic experiences, cultural depth, and culinary adventures, India should absolutely be on your list. Yes, it has its rough edges. The crowds, the pollution, the traffic, and the occasional discomfort are part of the package. But so are the rich traditions, the incredible food, the welcoming people, and the historic landmarks.

Whether you're exploring the chaotic lanes of Old Delhi or watching the sun set over the Arabian Sea in Mumbai, India will challenge you - but it will also reward you with insights and stories you won't find anywhere else.
