It's been a while since I've been in town and able to prepare for Marion's Trend of the Month challenge link-up and I'm so glad this month's trend was MAXIs, because wow do I love my black maxi skirt. This thing is seriously like wearing pajamas to work. Pair it with a simple tee, flats, and a cardigan, and you have a happy, happy girl.

My Blogging Mantra

I don't think I talk much about how I go about my blogging. You can tell I procrastinate by my lack of posts while I travel sometimes. You can tell that I sometimes have poor-quality, unedited photos and don't put hours of time into each blog post. You can tell that I don't dig through the entire internet to find the exact link to an item I'm wearing - a similar item is good enough.

At the core of it all, I blog because I enjoy blogging. And that is my biggest tip for new bloggers. Keep your blog fun. Don't let it stress you out. Don't obsess over your body, or your outfits, or your sponsors. Make friends through your blog. Nurture the relationships that inspire and motivate you and ignore the people who have enough time in their day to stop by the blog just to insult you in your comments (Warning total side note: I could talk about this all day. Don't you people have jobs?! Are you really so NOT busy that you can spend hours trolling the internet insulting complete strangers? I've been lucky enough to not have rude commenters, but I see them all the time on my friend's blogs and it just really annoys me. Okay, enough there.) So that's my biggest tip for you: blog within the space you can feel most comfortable. Of course, stepping out of your comfort zone sometimes is good. But unless this blog is your full time job, and you are desperately trying to make a living from it, keep it fun.

New Camera

Guys, I got a new camera. I'm SO excited. These are the first outfit pics on said camera, and I'm even more in love with the photos than I am with the camera.

I can't wait to start using it with the remote I got. I'm just so excited.

Anyway, I copied Fran a while ago to buy a striped popover from J. Crew Factory, and when the solid chambray version went on sale, I just had to pick it up. I love it. I'm especially happy that it is a lighter color than the full-button version I have from Urban Outfitters (this color, but not cropped, obviously).

I paired it with some cropped slacks I got a few years ago at Banana Republic, nude flats, a ruffled cardigan, and my awesome Urban Outfitters floral watch. I think I'm doing to do a little DIY to the strap to make it a tad more wearable - tying the fabric every time is starting to get annoying.

Alaska

I took these pictures on Monday just a few hours after dropping Trav off at the airport for his 6 weeks in Alaska (puffy eyes, anyone?). I got a lot of questions about his departure, so I figured I'd explain a bit here. Two of our friends who are brothers own a 32' fishing boat up in Alaska, and needed another crew member. Since Trav is going to school right now, it was super easy for him to take the summer session off and head up to help them out. He'll be one of three people on the boat working to catch around 100,000 lbs of sockeye salmon for Trident Seafood. He's done it once before, and while it is a lot of work, he also had a lot of fun, and was able to make a lot of money.

The best part is that on his last day, I'm flying up to Alaska, and we're hopping on a week-long one-way cruise from Whittier (near Anchorage) to Vancouver, BC. I'm super excited to go kayaking around the glaciers, see lots of wildlife, and, most importantly, have Trav to myself for a week before we come back to the real world and get back into the routine of work and school.

While I'm on the cruise, I'll be needing guest posts - I'll put out an official request in early July, but feel free to shoot me an email before then if you're interested!

Finally at home for an entire week and already I'm in a funk. Boyfriend left yesterday for 6 weeks of salmon fishing in Alaska, and we had a busy but wonderful weekend to send him off. But now reality has set in and I already miss him like crazy. This must be how he feels when I leave so often...

So anyway, this is an outfit from a while ago. Left on my camera at home last week when I was on the road. By the way - weren't all those guest posters great? I'm so lucky to have such amazing blogging friends who are willing to step in and help a girl out when she really needs it.

This outfit was photographed using a tripod, and tripods don't tell you when your tag is up in the back of your shirt. They also don't tell you when your smile is super fake. So...sorry about that. Here's the best I got out of the batch.

How I Pack

I want to start by saying that I am definitely not an expert on packing for a work trip. But I will say this - I can always fit my stuff in a carry-on, I can pack 30 minutes before I leave for the airport and not forget anything, and I almost always have the items I need to be ready for whatever comes my way. There have been 2-3 times in the last three years where I've had to buy something while I'm traveling, but this is usually because of unanticipated weather (storms), damage (an item ripping or a big spill I can't fix), or a last-minute travel change (adding a day or destination).

I'm going to make an effort to show you what I take on these trips, as you'll start to notice some patterns and tips that I probably can't point out all in one post. But this should be a good start.

Here are my travel tips for work trips (these apply to personal trips, too):

1. Start with the items you need. This could be a dress for a wedding you're attending. Or work polos and bottoms to wear in a tradeshow booth. Or it could be a favorite new pair of colored shorts you can't wait to show off at the beach. This week, I needed 4 days of booth wear, so I took 2 skirts, 2 pairs of pants, and 4 black polos. I took complementary tank tops for the days I would be wearing pants.

2. Plan for bordering activities. This could be an outfit that can easily go from the plane to your first meeting. Or a shirt to change into at the end of a day in the booth. Or a top that goes well with your shorts or with a skirt for a day-to-night look. For this trip, I grabbed a few tops that could go with the skirts and slacks, or with jeans, white pants, or a maxi skirt.

3. Grab a couple of extras. You never know if you're going to spill, or the weather will take a change, or you just plain don't want to wear what you planned for. Bring a few extra tops or bottoms to round out the wardrobe. Don't forget to bring a couple of cardigans or blazers to help with changes in weather. I also recommend bringing one item nicer than you'll need, just in case. This week, I wanted a couple of long-sleeve options that could be layered, and an uber-casual t-shirt in case I would have time to change for the flight home. I also grabbed a scarf for cold flights. I also grabbed both a gray and a camel cardigan, knowing they could go with anything. Last, I threw in a couple of dresses, which I didn't think I'd need, but were nice to have just in case.

4. Accessorize. I recommend bringing a few pieces that can be worn with many outfits. I typically bring a few gold necklaces and my gold watch so that I have some layering options (or I can wear them alone), and a bigger, bolder piece to amp up an otherwise simple outfit. I bring shoes that can go with multiple outfits - so they are typically neutral colors and styles. This week, I grabbed a white statement necklace, some gold necklaces, and my nude heels, nude flats, black flats, and a pair of sandals.

5. The stuff that goes with me every time. I travel with a bikini and cover-up, and workout clothes, no matter where I'm going. You never know where you'll encounter a hot tub, have some free time to get in a scenic run in a new city, or even better—have time to lay by the pool for a few hours in the morning with your laptop, squeezing in some work & vitamin D. Typical swim/workout clothes & shoes below.

6. Roll, don't fold, when you pack, and unpack right when you get there. This is a trick I learned years ago and it makes SUCH a difference. You can fit more, clothes don't get so wrinkled, and you can layer the stuff you know you'll wear first on top of the stuff that is less important. Unpacking and hanging stuff up saves time on ironing and digging through your suitcase each day. Here are some photos of that process from past trips.

Hi Work Clothes I Suppose readers! I am so excited to be guest posting today because I have been seriously stalking Bri forever. So much, in fact, that she was surprised she hadn’t heard from me about guest posting! Guess I should slow my roll a little…. or not.

Anyway, guess I should introduce myself. I’m Jacquelyn from justjacq where I write about food, fitness, fashion, and whatever else I can think of. Fashion posts are a new thing for me but I am really loving the challenge.

Putting yourself and your outfits out there forces you to be creative and relatable every single time.

It’s also a constant reminder of what you look like, which can sometimes be a shocking reality.

Once I started taking pictures of myself on a regular basis I realized that I finally needed to get really serious about my health and fitness.

White blazers are great because they go with anything.
Seriously, anything in your closet you can wear a white blazer with.

When you pair them with a cute summer dress they immediately define a waist.
This is great for dresses that don't have a lot of shape with them to begin with.
Case in point, this lovely shift I scored at Old Navy for ten dollars.

They add an instant sophistication when paired with a shirt and trousers.
I like to pair them with classic black pants and cute shirt for take on the black and white trend!

Happy Hump Day! I'm spending yet another day in New Orleans with my team working our tradeshow. It's hot and muggy here (and the Seattle in me loves to hate it) and I forgot my camera. That's probably a good thing, because my outfits are all some combination of black polo + skirt/slacks - but more importantly because it is letting me show off some of the other bloggers out there. Hi Everyone! I am Alice from Happiness at Mid-Life and have been following Bri's blog for some time now and love her sense of style! Thank you Bri for giving me an opportunity to guest post on your blog and share my work fashion style. I work in banking which typically means a BLAND & BORING wardrobe- suits and dark colors. I guess you could say, I am the Jimmy Dean Sun (from the commercial) that brightens up my office with colors and prints.

I am also not your 20 something blogger so I am try to dress not like my teenage daughter (if I had one). With that said, I do stick to styles and cuts that are more on the conservative style but still fun and my own. My favorite go to stores are White House Black Market, Banana Republic, Loft, Ann Taylor, J Crew and of course...Target!

Here are some examples on how I bright some color into my office. I love feminine details like ruffles and sequins which makes any work outfit just a little more fun! Don't you think?

Hi everyone! My name is Valerie, and I blog over at The Style Files. I'm thrilled to guest post for Bri on Work Clothes, I Suppose today! I love Bri’s blog because she is a fellow marketing gal like myself and I love her style—particularly because she has to dress for an office/professional setting.

I also work in marketing…but at a nonprofit, so my office is more business casual. However, I always tend to dress a little nicer (dress for the job you want, not the job you have right?!) I’ll take dresses and skirts any day and I love clean, classic looks!

That said, being that I work at a nonprofit, I am definitely budget-conscious on the clothes/accessories I buy. My go-to stores for shopping and closet staples are places like Target (I am a self-professed Target bargain shopper!), Old Navy, J.Crew Factory, Loft …and a few other outlet stores a mere 15 minutes from my house—dangerous I tell you! I always look for sales and coupons to use when I’m shopping either in the store or online!

Anyways, this was a recent outfit I wore to work…I love the detailing of the waistband on the skirt—adds a fun, feminine edge to it! I paired it up with some fun wedges I got on sale at Target (of course!) as well as a coral top. I added the army jacket to finish off the look and add an extra layer for the office- which is always SO chilly!

Hey guys!

Sorry for the brief interruption at the end of last week. I was busy shaming myself for going so over budget on my month of shopping. (Side note: I've returned $200 worth of Nordstrom purchases and am feeling MUCH better.)

I'm in New Orleans right now for a big Microsoft conference and I LEFT MY CAMERA WITH ALL OF MY PICTURES FOR THE WEEK AT HOME. Yah. Do I have any takers for super-last-minute guest posts this week?? Email me if you're interested!!

I will be showing you my suitcase at some point so you can see what this girl packs for a week on the road where I'm spending half of my day in a conference booth and half out with co-workers enjoying the fun cities we get stuck in. But who knows when that will come.

I went so overboard this month on shopping. So overboard. A lot of it hasn't come yet (online ordering...darn Nordstrom sale really got me this year) so I may end up returning a bunch of these pieces. We'll see.

I think two things happen when I start to travel a lot:

1. I come home from one trip and pack for the next on the same day a lot of the time, so I can't take the same items if they are dirty. This can make me feel like I'm running out of options pretty fast.

2. I find weird times to shop and overbuy in order to have enough. This often happens with online shopping when there's a good sale I don't have time to try things on, or when I'm rushing through a mall trying to pick up a specific thing and impulse buy other things I see on the way.

I now really need to curb this activity in June. But for now, here's what I purchased in May:

Red Hot Pants

In the same way I thought I'd never wear white pants, I never thought I'd wear red pants.

Yet here I am. And I love them, even after the first few times of wearing them. I find myself reaching for them more and more, and trying combinations I wouldn't have tried before. Like red with camel colored shoes. May seem simple enough, but for some reason I've never loved the combo. Yet here I am, trying it.

It's these little victories that help me get dressed every morning. I've found myself in quite the rut with my wardrobe lately, so I did a bit of shopping in May. I'll be back tomorrow to tell you about all the damage I did...it's not pretty.

Just in case you've been wondering, this is what I look like at 4:30am. I should look like a sleeping human being. But instead I look like this, ready to head to the airport, pausing for a moment to snap pictures, only to realize I don't have the energy I need to smile or pose.

This is what I wore yesterday on the plane to Cali. It is almost the exact same outfit I wore on the plane home from Vegas two weeks ago. And it is probably very similar to what I'll be wearing to fly to a few more business trips this spring. I promise not to show you every time :)

I'm not super into nautical looks. Not super into anything that looks obviously one style - I feel like it holds me back. But when this jacket was on sale at Banana Republic, I couldn't pass it up. It definitely looks nautical. But I love it and am determined to make outfits that don't seem overly nautical, like this one. At least, that's my attempt. Maybe I should be asking you what you think about it. Does this outfit scream nautical to you? This outfit just feels so ME. And I never would have predicted that. The white pants that used to make me feel like an enormous whale, the button-down shirts that made me feel too stuffy, the nerd glasses that I couldn't wait to get rid of before LASIK.

But now, today, this outfit is so me. I adore it. I would wear it, and the messy hair that so perfectly accompanies it, every day. Sadly it is a horrible travel outfit, so it's sitting at home waiting for another chance. And trust me, it will definitely get that chance.

I'm excited to announce that Third Thursday Threads is THIS WEEK and that the theme should be pretty easy for everyone to link up. This month, I wanted to go back to the roots of this blog and ask for some basic spring workwear inspiration. So this Thursday, May 16, come link up with your best WORKWEAR outfit. I may try a full suit and be really professional, or I may try integrating a simple t-shirt into an otherwise professional outfit. I may even try pulling out a sheath dress that has yet to see life outside of my closet.

And before today, I've only worn it once, because I'm lazy and hate to iron and this shirt is one of those awful shirts that really needs to be ironed every time it is worn, and then some. Like mid-day. And after sitting. Or hugging someone. Anyway, you probably won't see it that often. But here it is, wrinkled even after ironing, blowing in the wind, getting its few minutes of fame.

I'm finally feeling a bit more in the rhythm of this blogging thing, and I want to thank all of you for coming back time after time to provide feedback, give me ideas, and share your own blogs with me. As I'm alone on the road so much this week, I'm extra thankful for this online community. I know that I haven't been the fastest responder to your emails and comments and I've been commenting on your blogs more irregularly than usual, but know that I am still reading often!

First of all, I wanted to say a quick hello to all my new followers. I'm guessing a lot of you came over from Fran's blog, and I'm so excited to have you! Isn't she the greatest??

Now, on to what I really wanted to shout to start this post:
It isn't boot weather anymore, hallelujah!

But this outfit was another gem found on my camera from a few weeks ago, and I think it might be one of my most comfortable outfits ever worn. This skirt is just like walking around in a cloud. It's soft, airy light, but heavy enough that it doesn't blow around when the wind picks up, which we all know is super important! And of course, stripes and animal print just can't be beat (except maybe by stripes & floral?!) and is one of my favorite combinations, as seen here, and here, and here. This is also the first skirt ever posted in a real blog photo shoot on this blog. Crazy.
