Still Here...

It's been a long time since I last blogged, but that's not for lack of wanting to. Life has been kinda nuts and things like blogging got put on the back burner. I was looking back at my last post (around Halloween) and I realize it coincided with the time I started working outside the home (while also still homeschooling). Cut to mid-March and I'm now working full time and life is still crazy...but good.

I hope to get back in the habit of blogging regularly, if nothing else but to keep a journal of our new life in Utah and to chronicle our family's growth, learning, and experiences. If you're still around here, I appreciate you!

Fall Festival | Cornbelly's

First off, our kids had "fall break" this past weekend (thurs - mon) and it was GLORIOUS. I've always thought that stretch between Labor Day and Thanksgiving was so loooooong. Having a five day break this time of year was just the refresher we needed and thankfully, it was pretty chill.

Monday morning we ventured out to Cornbelly's for some fall fun. The theme this year was "The Greatest Showman", so everything including the maze layout was on-theme. For general admission (discounted with online code AND going on a weekday), I felt like we got tons for our money. Some things cost extra, but it wasn't anything we HAD to do. Money well spent, I'd say. The kids' favorite was probably the ropes course or answering "The Greatest Showman" questions to navigate through the corn maze. We stayed for about two hours and then went and had a yummy lunch at Thanksgiving Point. I love that my kids are getting the full fall experience here in Utah. I may had said this before, but I really feel like we're on an extended vacation...rather than that we actually live here now. Someday the novelty will wear off, but for now, we're seeing/doing/eating/enjoying it all!

Scout Falls Hike | Utah

Well folks, I think the winter-ish weather is upon us. Yesterday here in Utah was as cold as a Texas winter day in January. So for our hiking adventures, we're probably about done for the season...especially considering that we have no snow shoes/gear.
Some friends of ours came into town last weekend and we hiked Scout Falls from the Timpooneke trailhead up American Fork Canyon. Although shorter than Silver Lake hike, I think we hit it at peak foliage time and thus it ranks pretty high in my favorites. The hike was fairly easy, aside from scrambling up tree roots and having to pay close attention to footing. When we arrived at the falls, they didn't quite live up to the pictures I had seen, which was most likely due to the season and lack of precipitation Utah received this past year.
We hope to continue our hiking adventures once the snow melts next spring/summer, but I think it's safe to say that we've had a pretty solid go of things the past couple of months. Utah has been good to us so far and we have thoroughly enjoyed getting out in nature...and in the beautiful weather.

Utah Hike | Silver Lake

We've been trying our best to take advantage of all the amazing hikes here in Utah...and really, just being outdoors is fabulous this time of year! So far, we've hiked Donut Falls, Mount Timpanogos, The Y, and Silver Lake (as of this past weekend). We hope to be able to hike Mt. Timp before it gets too cold, as the last time was a few years ago and we weren't able to summit because of conditions. But this last hike to Silver Lake was amazing...and maybe my new favorite!

Hiking to Silver Lake was just the right amount of challenge...considering our group of 4 kids, 2 dogs, me, Blake and my mom. It took about 3 hours, but we stopped and enjoyed the scenery quite a bit. We loved hiking through the aspen groves and seeing the vivid colors of the fall foliage. And once we arrived at the lake, the reward was absolutely gorgeous! I can't wait to hike to Silver Lake again.

Thirteen

I polled Insta the other day asking which affects mommas most...when their oldest hits milestones or when the youngest does. I was surprised that most of the responses said the oldest! Milestones such as....oh I don't know, TURNING THIRTEEN! With all the crazy in our family/life right now, I wasn't preparing myself for our oldest becoming a teenager. I mean, we planned how she wanted to celebrate and stuff, but my mind and heart didn't really go to that place of "how the heck do we have a thirteen-year-old!?" or "why is my baby growing up so fast?!?" It kind of took me by surprise. Truthfully, I'm of the camp that gets way more emotional when my youngest hits milestones...so whenever his thirteenth birthday comes around, forget about it! But for our oldest, it definitely was one of those big birthdays and caused us to reflect on all the blessings and experiences she's brought to us as parents.

We started the day with her requested breakfast of cinnamon rolls, and later went into the mountain for a requested lunch of Shepherd's Pie. We found the perfect little creekside picnic area, but as soon as we began eating, bees swarmed us and didn't let up. So her birthday lunch in the mountains was cut reeeeeaaaaally short, but we continued up into the canyon to Tibble Fork...a beautiful reservoir for swimming, paddle boarding, etc. She ended her birthday by having a few new friends over for cake (Unicorn cake, of course) and discussing how life will be TOTALLY different now as a teenager. ;)

Please slow down. Just sloooooow your roll down, won't ya. No need to rush...we don't have to be anywhere. We're good right here at 13. Got that? K, thanks.

Our Moving Story...So Far

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I would share the story of our BIG MOVE from Texas to Utah. As many of you know, we are deeply rooted in Texas. I'm at least a 6th generation Texan and Blake's family came straight over from Germany to Texas...so clearly, we know no other way but the Texas way.
Blake had been looking for a new job this past year. Earlier this summer, a law firm in Utah reached out to him and things moved quickly. We had put our house on the market in April because we wanted to possibly downsize or just get a bit more land space...but once we learned of the new job offer, things became more clear as to selling our house and moving our family.

After months on the market (and having to cut our price waaaay down because of a stalled out market), our home in Texas FINALLY went under contract. Blake and I booked a trip to Utah to house hunt and to find a rental for my mom, who was also moving to Utah. After looking at 20+ homes, putting in 3 offers, and going under contract twice (crazy hot home market in Utah)...we left our house hunting trip with a home we planned to close on around the same time our home in Texas was set to close. I didn't love the house (at all), but we were out of time and out of options. It seemed like our only choice.
We planned out our move in a kind of crazy, disjointed way. We felt it best for our two littles to get started in school up here in Utah, so I made the drive with them from Texas to Utah and stayed in an Airbnb the first week of school. On the second day of our two-day road trip, we found out that our buyers backed out days before closing. NOT good. The sale of our house falling through had a trickle effect, which caused us to break our contract on the house in Utah....yeah, the one I didn't like in the first place. Not meant to be, I guess. ;)
But because so many of our moving plans were already in motion, it was too late to turn back...meaning, stay in our Texas home until another buyer came along. A week later, the whole family (including my mom) all moved up to Utah in one big caravan, and thankfully, my mother's rental home is large enough for us to stay until our house in Texas sells...again. We really need it to sell as soon as possible. Other details include having to board our dogs, living out of boxes and a storage unit, and not being able to get quite settled knowing that it's all temporary.
However, we have felt an underlying purpose behind all of this madness. Although it's difficult, expensive, and stressful, we know the Lord has a plan for our family. Whether that plan is growth (as we all need from time to time) or to test our faith, the challenges are easier to swallow keeping that in mind. As one of my dear friends puts it, "It will work out how it SHOULD." I love that word should. Not how we want. (clearly). Not how we think it will. Not how it might with all the millions of possibilities. But how it SHOULD. How the Lord wants it to work out and how it will be best for our family in the long run. I feel like we will look back on this time in our lives and see clearly the lessons learned and the sequence of meaningful events that took place.
Of course, this is all easier said than done. I try reeeeeaaaaaally hard to stay patient, but I definitely have those moments of panic and "what ifs". But in the end, it won't be the end. Even if all things don't work out, it still won't be the end of the world. It will be okay. It will be as it should.
Alas, our story isn't over. I'll be sure to share any exciting updates and will continue sharing our new experiences here in Utah!

Fall Home & Style Wish List

Fall is ALLLLLLLMOST upon us up here in Utah and it's glorious!!!! Seriously, I cannot wait for layers and booties and hot chocolate and open windows! A true fall season! Something we aren't used to and I personally feel giddy just thinking of it! I put together a few things that I've either had my eye on (that camel sweater) or that just give me all the warm-fuzzies about our soon-to-be autumn. Bring IT ON!!!

American Fork Canyon - Family Camping

Headed into the mountains with our take-out dinner, flashlights, tent, and 2 sleeping bags...we were not as prepared as we would've liked. Still being in transition from the move, much of our stuff is "somewhere in storage"...meaning, who knows exactly where it was placed. Thus, we found all the blankets we could to add to our measly 2 sleeping bags (for a family of 6, mind you) and hoped for the best. Our best was quite chilly and uncomfortable, but hey, it was fun!

Camping in the mountains was definitely a treat for us! One that we hadn't experienced as a family. Not only was the weather cool (down right cold at night), but being amongst the forest adds an authentic feel to camping that you just don't get in good ol' Texas. We stayed at a place called Mutual Dell in the American Fork Canyon. It's owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and available for families to camp during certain parts of the year when it's not used for girls camp or scouting. We didn't do anything amazing while there...pretty much just hung out, froze our butts off trying to sleep, and then packed up first thing in the morning. But I think we all had a memorable time and would like to do it again...with proper sleeping gear of course. Side note: My lucky mom went home early and slept in her own bed. I'm sure she won that night!

Hiking Donut Falls

We've been in our house in Utah for a little over a week now. My brother came down from Oregon to help my mother move and stayed with us until his flight this morning. After days of being knee-high in boxes, moving paper, and a general mess of stuff...on Labor Day morning, we decided to take a break from unpacking and head to the mountains.

We decided upon the Donut Falls hike and wanted to get out there as early as possible, with donuts in hand, of course. Our family motto has become something to the effect of "get an early start to beat the crowds...always". We have enjoyed the rewards (or avoidance of crowds/waiting) by sticking to this way of planing/thinking in most things we do as a family. This was no different. In fact, there were tons of cars parked all over the canyon road at 8am! Eager beavers!

Our hike was easy but fun. I wasn't prepared for the VERY cool morning and regretted not bringing a hoodie along. Hiking is one of our favorite things to do and I am excited about all of the trails so close by! If you're from around these parts, do you have any great hikes you'd recommend?

We Moved...Texas to Utah!

The past several months have been a whirlwind. I'll maybe devote a separate blog post for the longer version of the story, but suffice it to say, we moved from Texas to Utah last week. I came up early to get the two littles in school in Utah and then flew back home to get the rest of the kids, dogs, and other vehicle (Blake drove the moving truck).

The week in Utah with just me and my two little ones staying in an Airbnb was both laid back and eventful at the same time. We tried to stay busy after school and on the weekend...and I think we had some pretty great times together! These two are besties and just adore each other...most of the time. I'm thankful for the week we had exploring and getting used to our new surroundings.

***Discovery Park: They wanted to come back to this place multiple times...such a cool, exploratory kids park!

***Bridal Veil Falls: They took off their shoes and explored around the base of the falls. Another place they've asked repeatedly if we could visit again.

***Temple Square: I was surprised at how long they wanted to spend here. They loved listening and reading every single thing in both of the visitors centers. Always such a beautiful place to visit!

Our 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Break-Down

I haven't blogged all that much in the last few months...due to a number of things, but one of the biggest was time I instead dedicated to homeschooling my oldest for her 6th grade year. Now that we're in summer and have wrapped up her schooling for the year, it's nice to look back and see all that we accomplished and learned together. I might share in a later post how we decided to homeschool and all that the story entails...but suffice it to say, we've been blessed.
I've been asked countless times why we decided to homeschool her, which curricula we used, etc. etc. etc. My mother, a former educator and curriculum consultant, helped tremendously when piecing together which curricula we wanted to use...and in fact, we chose a different one for each subject. I know some homeschoolers stick with one curriculum program for all subjects, however, we felt this way of doing things (piecemeal) worked best for her/us. I did find myself supplementing quite a bit with various online resources, but for the most part, I was very pleased with the quality of what was covered and taught.
In the event others may be interested in what we used (and where to find them), I've created a little round up of the main subjects, what we bought/used, and linked everything I could find (below). This break-down does not include projects, field trips, or other special activities we did (such as science experiments), but it's a solid high-level summary of what our 6th grade year entailed. If you or someone you know might find this helpful, please feel free to share it. One of my friends kindly gave me many resources and ideas, and I'm hopeful I can pass on the favor...especially to a family who is new to middle-school homeschooling like we were and might not know where to start.

Family Texas Beach Trip - Port Aransas

We just got home from our annual Texas beach trip and we were so blessed with breaks in what was originally a poor weather forecast. Last year, Port Aransas was one of the hardest hit areas from Hurricane Harvey. The condo we've stayed at for years is still closed and under reconstruction...thus, we stayed at a new resort and were super impressed! My kids always love staying and playing with their cousins...in fact, they're already asking when we can go back (well, next year kids).
Living in Texas, I grew up going to our beaches here...they're not the best, but you can't beat a 3 hour drive to the coast. This year, there was minimal seaweed and critters, which is a win! We have a Disney cruise coming up next fall, and are looking forward to those beaches as well!!!! As for now, we're planning to catch up on some rest and enjoy our fun memories of kicking off SUMMER 2018!

This time of year is CRAZY! But let's be honest...the entire 2018 has been quite busy for us as a family. As an update to life, we're wrapping up our 6th grade homeschooling year, finishing up my spring photography sessions, our home is on the market, and well...it's May. Enough said, right?

Holiday Traditions | The BEST Time to be a Kid

Happy November Friends!!!! It's officially holiday season, am I right? We're already turning up the Charlie Brown Christmas CD and burning festive candles around here! It's the most wonderful time of the year!
A few years back, I read something that explained how families are bonded together and made stronger through family traditions. It's so true that traditions link families, give a sense of belonging and identity, and at their root define who we all are. Ever since then, I've tried to add to our list of traditions and memory-making. And what a better time than during the holidays when there is so much to do, see, and enjoy!?!

Some of our family's holiday traditions:

Every year around this time, we take our holiday family photo. For the past couple of years, this photo has been of just the kids and we usually send it out for our Christmas card. This year, we coordinated the kids with cozy essentials and holiday looks from Gymboree. I love how they all coordinate! We plan for these outfits to be their go-to for our holiday parties, as well.

We love making yummy hot chocolate and driving around looking at Christmas lights....with the windows down and Christmas music playing! Longest running tradition for the Jansens! We then let each kid pick their favorite house and give them some cookies.

Every year on Christmas Eve, we gift our children new PJs. This tradition started when I was little...we got to open one gift on Christmas Eve. We've adapted this to specifically be PJs. My kids look forward to this each year! Gymboree has such darling PJs and slippers!!

Elf on the Shelf. This tradition is fun for the kids...but geez...he gets on my nerves. This year he isn't making an appearance until much later. Last year he arrived on December 1!!!!

We do a family night reading the Christmas story and acting out the nativity with our kids. This not only makes for special memories, but also reaffirms for our children the meaning and purpose of why we celebrate Christmas.

We plan to institute this tradition Blake grew up with once our kids are a bit older: On Christmas Eve when everyone was asleep, the kids would try to sneak down the hall to get a "peek" at the gifts. BUT, Blake's dad would have booby trapped the entire hallway so that the kids would inevitably trip one of the obstacles and make a sound, then scamper back to bed before their parents woke up...then repeat. Think: rattling coffee cans and fishing wire. Genius!

Two Weeks In Maine | Summer Travel

The final leg of our northeast family vacation was spent in the glorious Southwest Harbor, Maine. We had a darling cabin nestled in a quiet little neighborhood, just steps from the harbor. Most days, we ventured into Acadia National Park, a short drive away. Between the hiking, exploring, crabbing, boating, and all manner of FUN...we had such a memorable and wonderful time.

If you've never visited Maine, I would highly suggest spending some time there in the summer or fall months (at least a week to really enjoy it). I love the costal areas especially, such as the picturesque town of Camden or the historical area of Penobscot. Staying close to Acadia was really a treat, as we frequented the park so often, biking the carriage roads and hiking the trails. Bar Harbor is another great spot on Mt. Desert Island, but a tad touristy...great for shopping and eating though!

After this trip (which my third time in Maine), I half-way jokingly mentioned to Blake that we need to figure out how to have a home up there. In my dreams! But really...it's THAT amazing! I described it to someone the other day as "feeling like you're in another country". I hope and pray we have many more memories to make as a family visiting the state of Maine, and who knows...maybe even someday call it home.

Summer Vacay (Leg 2) - NY, Niagara, & Canada

I shared the first part of our epic Jansen vacation all about New York City HERE...and our second leg of the trip was just as, if not more, exciting and fun! From NYC, we rented a minivan and headed upstate. Side note: I never have driven (nor probably ever will again) a minivan and I was oddly giddy about the chance to drive one for several weeks! Weird I know...but I digress.

We headed up to the Finger Lakes region and found our AirB&B in Honeoye Falls, NY. It was an old farm house built in the 1800s. We had an entire wing of the house all to ourselves, as well as access to the pool and grounds. Besides being a really old house (which showed its age a bit), it was the perfect accommodation and location for our family of six.

On our first day upstate, we visited some historic and very significant church sites, including the Smith Family Farm, the Sacred Grove, the Book of Mormon publication site, and the Hill Cumorah. We pretty much had each site to ourselves, which was so nice. Not only were we able to have some special family time spent at each of these locations, but being alone allowed us (especially our kids) to really understand and wrap their brains around what we were seeing/visiting. We hope at some point, our children's testimonies of God the Father and Jesus Christ were strengthened from their experiences.

The next day, we arrived early at Niagara Falls for our Maid of the Mist adventure. I had done this before, so I was super excited for the rest of my family to experience it. It's like nothing you've ever seen before, as the boat goes right up to the ginormous horseshoe falls. Everyone gets soaked (hence the ponchos) and the wind blows the mist so hard that at times you can't even look up! It's incredible! Afterwards, we cruised across the border to the Canada side to view the falls from a better angle. The Canadian side is way better, nicer grounds, and an absolute must if you visit Niagara. For lunch we headed down to one of the most picturesque towns I've seen called Niagara on the Lake. It sits right on Lake Ontario, which is a sight to see in itself! Although our stay in Canada was brief, I was glad the kids got to experience what it's like in another country...although Tyler Bree remarked how it's just like the U.S. Yep!!!

At the end of this leg of the trip, sadly Blake had to return home. Mostly because of our three dogs...we just didn't feel comfortable boarding them for 3 weeks. The morning he flew back home, the kids and I flew up to Maine to meet my mom and spend the next two weeks. Maine is one of my favorite places EVER and it was such a blast! More coming soon!

New York City | In 2 Days With 4 Kids

We had SUCH an amazing (almost month-long) trip that I'm just now being able to sort through my photos and wrap my brain around it! Our trip started out with a brief stay in New York City. Our flight got in mid-afternoon on a Tuesday and we drove out of the city Thursday afternoon...short but sweet.

In planning our trip, I have to admit I was a tad anxious about taking all 4 kids to the big city. I had visions of gripping their hands and navigating the stressful streets of NYC. But in actuality, it wasn't anything like I thought. Yes, we were cautious and stayed together, but I didn't feel that nervousness I thought I would...except for just once. We were going down into the subway and I swiped Bennett's card before mine (I don't know why I did this...before then, Blake and I had made sure we were bookends to the kids at all times) and then I went through the turnstile to find him no where in sight. I full-out panicked and wildly started yelling his name. I think probably only a few seconds passed before I looked to my right and saw him standing on the outside of the exit turnstile while all of us where on the inside. I yelled at Blake to swipe the card again to let him back through, but we were all out of money on the card!!! Pure craziness. It all ended up fine, but could have been a reeeaaaaaaaal bad situation.

I think out of everything we saw and visited...Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Staten Island Ferry, Ground Zero, Times Square...their absolute FAVORITE part was spending their hard earned money at Dylan's Candy Bar. I mean, they were like kids in a candy store!!!! ;) We had a great time and would love to go back to New York. I've been to NYC several times and going all together as a family made me see it in a different light. But also, made me want to go back again soon with no kids. Ha!

Summer-to-Fall Transition Piece | Velvet Top

Currently I'm sitting in a hotel room at the half-way point through our family's vacation. I had remembered that I never posted about my new velvet top I was so stoked about. One may think (and may be correct in assuming) that velvet is only for cooler weather. I thought that too...until I wore this top. It's lined and surprisingly breezy, lending itself to being a great transition piece from summer into fall. I comes in a variety of colors, including midnight blue as well as this mauve I'm wearing. I like it so much!

Once home from our trip, I'll be sure to post all the highlights and some travel tips from the places we've been. Just to give you a little snippet...today, we rode the Maid of the Mist boat at Niagara Falls and the kids LOVED it! So did I, but it was especially fun getting to watch their faces in awe. I hope you all are enjoying your first week of August. Summer is winding down and it doesn't quite seem fair. Here's to cherishing these last several weeks before school starts back!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Update | High-Low Wrap Tunic

Some of my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale purchases came in and I'm loving what I got! For the most part, the sizes fit but I'll be making some exchanges soon. I bought several tops that are a bit out of the everyday-wear category...meaning ruffles, high-low, big sleeves, etc....and I LOVE them! I wore this oversized bow shirt to church yesterday and this high-low wrap tunic (plenty of sizes still available) to our family birthday celebration. It's lightweight and easy to wear with skinny jeans (as shown) or leggings or even over a fitted pencil skirt!!!

Back-To-School Outfits & Goals

Goodness, this summer is flying by! How is it already time for school supplies, school clothes, and all that is "back-to-school"?!? This time of year we always start thinking of what we want to accomplish for ourselves and as a family in the coming school year. Setting goals (and writing them down) are not only beneficial for our own growth, but can also strengthen family bonds as we cheer eachother on!
I sat down with each of my kids the other day and we talked about their school-year goals. Their responses were such a perfect representation of who they are and the young people they're becoming! Check out our goals below:

Bennett - To learn more math and science so he can build a lightsaber
Blakely - To create inventions
Riley - To begin and complete "The Order of the Phoenix" (Harry Potter) by Christmas
Tyler Bree - To become an expert on weather
And last but (hopefully) not least....
Me - To keep my home clean on a regular basis to allow for increased harmony and order (wishful thinking?)

And as far as the school-prep goes, one of my kids' favorite parts is getting new school clothes! (Doesn't everyone?) I love the back-to-school looks Gymboree sent each one of my kids...they're a perfect fit and look for the first day of school! Not only are Gymboree's clothes great quality, but they can be worn for all sorts of occasions, dressed up or down or for play!! And what's even better is that most of these styles are all on SALE! I've made each one of their looks easy to shop by linking to the exact piece...and if I'm playing favorites (which I try not to do), I must say that I LOVE Tyler Bree and Bennett's outfits, and especially all the adorable shoes my kids are sporting! While I'm not quite ready for summer to end, there's just something about back-to-school, isn't there?

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale | First Look

Happy Thursday Friends!!! I've been waiting for this day for a while now...it's the first day of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (Early Access)!!!! If you're a card holder, you can shop the huge sale starting today! If not, hang in there for a few more days and it's open to the public. This is the BEST sale of the year hands down, as there are so many steals and deals on clothes/shoes for the next season (not has-been or last seasons stuff)!!!
I did a quick run-through and picked out some of my favorites at first glance. I'll be posting some more specific spotlights during this next week on booties, jeans, outerwear, and beauty...so check back!!!

A Family Road Trip | No Mess In Texas

Looking back over this last week, it's been one the best of the summer so far! We took a short road-trip outside of Austin, Texas for a little family getaway. It was just the refresher we needed! Not too far, but far enough that we were able to get in full vacation mode without hearing the dreaded question of "Are we there yet?"
As with most of our getaways...the packing, preparing, and coordinating is no small feat for our family of 6. The morning before we left, Blake and I were scrambling around trying to get our house tidied up, finish packing, get the dogs off to the boarders, etc. We didn't have much time to think what the kids might need to eat/do while on the road...we just wanted to get going! So thankfully, we had a little excursion package sent to us by BabbleBoxx, which was just what our kids needed. Blakely and Bennett usually color or read in the car, so these Texas-themed books were right up their alley. In fact, they argued who could do which first!

Once we got on the road, tummies wanted snacks (of course) and it was so great to be able to pass out the Tree Top applesauces pouches (without worrying about a mess, I might add). Road trip food is so good, but often not-so-good for you...so these snacks were the perfect healthy, no-spill, and packable option. We try to eat healthy about 80% of the time, so when my kids think these Tree Top applesauce pouches are a special treat, I secretly cheer inside that they love something that has no artificials, no HFCS, no GMO, BPA-free, and are from U.S.A grown apples! Such a Win-Win for my family!!!

For longer family excursions, we often pick out a movie for the kids to watch or a fun game to play, such as the Alphabet Game. It helps the time pass, and also keeps us doing something together rather than everyone glued to their individual devices (don't get me wrong, we have a little of that time too).
