Christian Legal Society v. Martinez: Discrimination, Free Speech, Homosexuality, and Christianity

CLS is co-sponsoring a Panel on the recent Supreme Court decision, CLS v. Martinez, with the the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Law Student Alliance. The panel will feature three speakers with a variety of view points on the issue, including Kim Colby from CLS who worked on the case and Ross Douthat from the New York Times. The Resurrection

¹¹While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. ¹²When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, ¹³telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.' ¹⁴If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." ¹⁵So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. 2010 CLS NE Regional Retreat REGISTRATION: Spaces Still Available

Dear Jenny,

Happy New Year. Hope that you and your family had a very nice holiday. January is already almost halfway over and the 2010 NE Regional Retreat at the lovely Frost Valley YMCA in Claryville New York is quickly approaching. Please Register today.

In addition to a wonderful teaching by our speaker, Rev. Phil Ashey, we are scheduling plenty of rest and relaxation time again this year, and hope that you and your family will take advantage of the activities that we are planning. You can see a tentative schedule to the left, and some portions may be altered slightly to accommodate better fellowship time with one another.

If you have any suggestions regarding the schedule, please let us know as soon as possible as we are still finalizing things.

RETREAT REGISTRATION

As we noted in our first email, the costs for this retreat are very reasonable. Each attorney pays only $179. Spouses are at a reduced rate fee of $79. This year kids 16 and older are also $79 each, but Kids 6-15 are only $69 and kids under 6 are FREE. Law Students are only $50 each and student spouses are only $50.

The registration fee includes the following: CLE fees (planned); snack Friday night; breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday (coffee break snacks, too); breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Additionally, this fee covers our meeting space as well as snow-tubing, broom-ball and one other activity at Frost Valley. Childcare may be provided by CLS, but we will need to know how many kids you are bringing, and their ages.

Accommodations in the Lakeview Lodge are only $213 per room for our two night stay, Friday and Saturday. For more information, CLICK HERE.

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Make sure that you are logged-in to the CLS website (not necessary but helpful).
2. Fill in the number of persons that will be attending, e.g.
Attorney Registration: 1; Spouse: 1; Kids 6-10: 3
3. If you are planning to split the cost of room, you can register your roommate under that category.

4. To reserve your accommodations, simply fill in "1" under Lakeview Lodge. If you need to reserve more than one room, simply fill in the number of rooms you need to reserve.
5. Fill in credit card information (all 4 major cards accepted) and billing information if it is not already filled in.
6. Double check your information to insure it is correct and then click submit.

Once you have completed all of your registration, you will be prompted to send an email to CLS with the names of those in your party.

Blackstone Fellowship DEADLINE January 21, 2010

The Blackstone Legal Fellowship® is a nine-week summer leadership development program in law and servant ministry, the first of its kind and unlike any summer legal internship program offered in America. It is a rigorous program for exceptionally capable and highly motivated Christian law students from law schools across the nation. The Blackstone Legal Fellowship is designed primarily for law students between their first and second year of law school.

The Fellowship is named in honor of Sir William Blackstone, the noted English lawyer whose Commentaries on the Laws of England were studied by virtually every American law student until the middle of the 19th century.

Interns in the program have the opportunity to closely interact with some of the nation's top Constitutional experts, and are equipped with a distinctly Christian worldview in every area of life, particularly in the areas of law and public policy. The Fellowship also addresses some of the challenging cultural and legal issues facing the Christian lawyer in the new millennium.

The goal: to train a new generation of lawyers who will rise to positions of influence and leadership as legal scholars, litigators, judges, and perhaps even Supreme Court justices, and who will work to ensure that justice is carried out in America's courtrooms.

The Blackstone Legal Fellowship has three specific objectives:

1. Equip Christian law students to engage the legal culture with biblical and natural law principles
2. Give law students confidence that the foundation of law on which our country was established is rationally superior to any competing legal philosophy.
3. Profoundly influence Christian law students to take their training and knowledge into positions of influence where they can bring about needed change in America’s legal system.

Admission to the Blackstone Legal Fellowship program is highly competitive. There are tens of thousands of first-year law students in America; however, only 109 students were accepted to the summer of 2009 program. Criteria for selection include demonstrated Christian commitment, motivation to engage the popular legal culture in debate over principle, national and statewide leadership potential, evidence of oral and written communication skills and academic achievement.

There are some key facts you should know now. Room rates at the Rosen Plaza Hotel are as follows:

On on before August 1, 2010:
$125/night (up to 4 persons per room)

After August 1, 2010:
$145/night (up to 4 persons per room)

As always, reservations must be made by you directly with the Hotel. For reservations, please call 1-800-627-8258 and request group rate for CHRISTIAN LEGAL SOCIETY. Reservations for a minimum of ONE night MUST be made no later than September 27, 2010. Cancellations must be made FIVE (5) days prior to your arrival, or you will be charged one night's room and tax penalty.

You must be registered as a CLS conference attendee to have the benefit of these rates which graciously have been extended to CLS by the Rosen Hotel in support of the CLS ministries.

The Hotel wll be providing CLS with a special reservations page (coming) dedicated to reservations for the CLS National Conference.

University of Maryland School of Law Many members of our community have expressed an interest in supporting the relief efforts in Haiti. Students from the University of Maryland School of Law will be organizing efforts to mobilize the entire law school community in supporting the Haitian relief efforts of the American Red Cross International Response Fund and Catholic Relief Services.

Please look next week for the donation tables in the law school for Haitian Relief Efforts. Come join us for the 5th Annual Northeast Regional Law Student Retreat! Held again in conjunction with the 2010 Northeast Attorneys Retreat, the weekend will be a time of relaxion, fun, fellowship, and worship! The retreat will take place at the Frost Valley YMCA in the beautiful Catskill Mountains, near Claryville, New York, February 19-21, 2010. We are planning a relaxing weekend, with plenty of time set aside for spiritual growth and quiet times. In addition, we look forward to a rematch of last year's fiercely contested broomball game, snow tubing on the tubing hill, cross-country skiing, and star-gazing at the Frost Valley Observatory under the astronomical guidance of CLS member Ray Dague.During your time at Frost Valley, you will also be able to interact with attorneys from the region, who will offer advice and mentoring, both formally (through workshops and seminars) and informally (during our times of fellowship and sharing).

Speaker
Our retreat speaker this year is the Rev. J. Philip Ashey, former CLS Chaplain and dear friend to many of us. Phil is now serving as the COO and Chaplain of the American Anglican Counsel. He will be teaching us about discipleship in a series of talks titled: "How to Live Our Lives as Jesus Would." This four-part series will begin on Friday evening with "Is it Really Possible?," followed by two sessions on Saturday: "From Hardness to Wholeness" and "Getting a Grip on Grace," and will conclude Sunday morning with "Grace Under Fire."

The law student registration fee is only $50! We invite spouses as well at the $50 rate. This year, registration is limited to 50 students, on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register as soon as possible!

Throughout the weekend, IJM’s international staff will share about recent casework victories for victims of violent oppression, as well as the joys, challenges and prayer needs of their field offices. We will celebrate former clients who have been rescued through IJM casework and look forward to the next year of justice work together. We will be encouraged in our faith as IJM President and CEO Gary Haugen and others lead us in reflection, prayer and worship.
