24-Inch Ultrasharp LCD Monitors from Dell

Dell has finally released the Ultrasharp U2410 and ST2410 LCD monitors in the US market. The Dell U2410 adopts an IPS panel, providing 96% coverage of the Adobe RGB color space and 100% coverage of the sRGB color space. It also supports a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 resolution, a 6ms response time, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, a 400 cd/m2 brightness and comes with several connectivity ports including VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort and four USB ports. A budget alternative, the ST2410, is also new and uses a less color-rich TN (twisted nematic) panel as well as a lower 50,000:1 contrast ratio. It also has reduced input with DVI, HDMI and VGA as its options. The Dell Ultrasharp U2410 and ST2410 LCD monitors are priced at $599 and $259, respectively.

LG’s First Android Smartphone

LG today introduced their first Android-based smartphone that will be available in the fourth quarter of this year in selected European markets. The announcement of LG’s first Android-powered smartphone comes only a week after the company announced that it would be introducing three new Windows Mobile smartphones in the next few weeks. Previously known as “Etna”, the LG GW620 is a QWERTY-slider that has a 3-inch touchscreen display with a 5-megapixel autofocus camera, Wi-Fi and GPS. Sadly, there is no info on when this handset will be available in the US market. We will keep you posted.

Apple Launches new Lineup of iPods

In the “Rock and Roll” event today, Apple has rocked out new series of iPod Nano as well as iPod Touch.

We all were expecting something more bigger but we got pretty much slimmer (just kidding). Apple has rolled out new series of iPod Nano with in-built video camera, Genius capability, FM-transmitter, Voice Over and Voice recorder

Today, HTC officially announced the Touch2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 that includes My Phone and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. HTC was skimp on specs, but we do know that the Touch2 will have TouchFLO and a slew of Google products pre-installed. And the new IE Mobile supports Flash. If you’re into that sort of thing, which we suspect you are. The Touch2 launches on October 6 with availability spreading to the rest of Europe and Asia in Q4.

Which phones, specifically? We don’t have the slightest idea. But come October 6th, ol’ Redmond is saying we’ll have a “bunch” of new Windows Mobile 6.5 phones (known as “Windows phones” from here on out) to choose from.

In just a bit over a month, now, WinMo-devouts will be kickin’ around a brand new UI, a new application marketplace, and Microsoft’s backup service, My Phone. It seems like just about every big name is hopping on the WinMo 6.5 train; in North America alone, they’ve partnered with AT&T, Bell Mobility, Sprint, TELUS and Verizon Wireless, HP, HTC Corp., LG Electronics, Samsung and Toshiba Corp.

It's official: Apple event set for 09/09/09

As expected, Apple has officially confirmed that it will host an event next Wednesday, September 9.

Invitations went out Monday. The music-themed event in San Francisco will be held at 10 a.m. at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, which is next door to Moscone Center, where Apple's much-larger Worldwide Developers Conference takes place every June.

Based on the image of the classic iPod advertisement art and the tag line, "It's only rock 'n roll, but we like it," this will be the company's annual music-focused event. Apple has hosted a new product introduction of its iPods every September for the past few years, and this year doesn't look to be any different. Besides new iPod Touch models, Apple is also expected to discuss its new interactive album format, known as Cocktail.

Because the date is a Wednesday, as opposed to Apple's traditional preference for events on Tuesdays, it's possible there could finally be an announcement regarding a Beatles catalog coming to iTunes. September 9 is also the day The Beatles' remastered digital albums and Rock Band video game will be released.

Netbook shipments continue to rise

More than 38 million Netbooks shipped in the second quarter of 2009, helping them capture a 22.2 percent share of the portable PC market, according to a report released Monday from DisplaySearch.

Quarterly demand for Netbooks, or mini-note PCs, jumped 40 percent over the first quarter, according to DisplaySearch's latest "Quarterly PC Shipment and Forecast Report." This surge contrasts with notebook shipments, which grew 22 percent over the same period.

Former Netbook pioneer Asus has been losing sales to other manufacturers, notes the report. Acer, HP, Dell,Lenovo, and Toshiba have all jumped into the mini market with their own offerings.

The lower price of Netbooks has helped them win a bigger market share over notebooks in Latin America and China, notes DisplaySearch. These regions have many first-time PC buyers bypassing notebooks with lots of bells and whistles in favor of simpler but cheaper Netbooks.

Netbook makers can also thank telecommunications providers, who have been subsidizing mini-note PCs to lure customers. In many Western European countries, telecom companies subsidize 100 percent of the Netbook's price tag when customers sign up for a two-year data plan, says DisplaySearch. Cable providers have also gotten into the act, offering heavily-discounted Netbooks for people who sign up for cable TV, Internet, and phone service.

According to a recent rumors Apple’s series of iPods are likely to get camera including iPod Classic. DigiTimes reported earlier today that OmniVIsion has got the contract of providing 18 Million CMOS image sensors to Apple Inc. per quarter.

Microsoft Apologizes for Racially Charged Image Alteration

Microsoft apologized Wednesday after a Polish version of the company's ad had a black man's head replaced with the head of a white man. The image alteration of the picture was making rounds on the forums last night and Microsoft pulled the picture today.

The edit of the Microsoft ad for its Polish division was crude, to say at least. The U.S. ad depicted three people at a conference table: an Asian man, a black man, and a white woman. When localizing the marketing image for Poland, Microsoft had the black man's head clumsily replaced with that of a white man.

As pictured above, the photos are basically identical and the Microsoft ad left room for racial interpretation. However, in the picture, only the black man's head was replaced -- the hands noticeably a different color.

Many thought this was originally a joke, but a double check last night on both Microsoft's U.S. and Polish sites confirmed otherwise. Microsoft apologized and pulled the image from the Polish site today, while "looking into the details of this situation," the company told Cnet. The Polish Microsoft site now features the unaltered image.

A couple of other things are peculiar about Microsoft's (even unedited) image. First of all, the laptop in front of the black man is an Apple MacBook (yes, another Apple product in a Microsoft ad with the logo covered) and the computer monitor in front of the woman is not plugged into anything, even though the keyboard is.

Perhaps Microsoft should either look twice before buying stock photography or just hire a local photographer when they want to localize some marketing images.

Sony S-Series Walkman PMPs leak

Sony’s upcoming S-Series Walkman has leaked, prematurely listed at French retailer materiel.net. Two versions of the PMP are detailed, the 8GB Sony NWZ-S544 and the 16GB NWZ-S545, each with a 16:9 aspect QVGA 2.4-inch LCD display and integrated stereo speakers.

There’s also an FM radio with 30 presets, MP3, WMA and AAC support, a built-in microphone and H264/AVC, MP4 and WMV video playback at up to 30fps. Unlike the OLED X-Series Walkman there’s no WiFi, internet access or YouTube playback, but then the S-Series are meant to be a far more affordable breed of PMP.

Battery life is listed as up to 42hrs music playback or 6.5hrs video playback, and there’s a nifty little stand for hands-free use. The listings have since been pulled, but the S-Series started from €129 ($183) for the 8GB model.

Samsung N510 landing US in September; first of 3 ION netbooks

Fresh Samsung ultraportable tidbits for you today, with the news that not only will the company’s N510 NVIDIA Ion netbook be shipping in the US come September, but that it will be the first of three models to use the GeForce 9400M GPU. According to documentation acquired by Netbook Choice, the N510 will be joined by the Samsung NP-N511 and NP-N508.

Details of the two new notebooks are unknown; however it’s speculated that the N511 will use a different Atom CPU while the N508 might drop down a size-point and have a 10-inch display. Release dates are similarly unknown.

As for the N510, according to Liliputing that will begin shipping in September with a $599 MRSP. The ultraportable – which has an 11.6-inch 1,366 x 768 display, HDMI port, Intel Atom CPU and 160GB hard-drive – is expected to land in Europe this month priced at €499 ($707).
