Shobaraj (Mohanlal) is the leader of an underworld gang. The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) is tracking down Shobaraj and in one of their confrontations the DSP wounds Shobaraj, resulting in his death. The DSP then secretly holds a burying of Shobaraj. After which the DSP remembers a person 'Raj' (Mohanlal) who looks like Shobaraj, Who's really is Shobaraj's blood brother, who were separated when they were small. DSP then tracks that person down.He requests Raj to impersonates Shobaraj so that the DSP can take down the rest of Shobaraj's gang, Raj requests that the DSP promises him that he will give a proper education to the children that he is looking after. But in an unexpected turn of events the DSP dies. The DSP is the only one who knows the truth about the impersonator who now finds himself in a life-threatening situation - hunted by both the cops and the real Shobaraj's henchmen and to make matters worse, he then finds out that Interpol Officer is a crook and has taken the place of the real person. He is the one responsible for the DSP's murder. It's now a race to retrieve a the DSP's diary in which the DSP has documented his substitution of the real Shobaraj.

An I.V Sasi film is eagerly waited for and if it is a film with Mohanlal, the excitement is bound to be higher. After Devasuram Sasi and Mohanlal have come together in Sradha. The film has all the ingredients of box office appeal - an upright, daring police officer, hard-core terrorists, four leading actresses, action, suspense, songs, dances etc.

Sradha is the story of Ganga Prasad IPS (Mohanlal), a daring officer of the Anti Terrorist Wing of the State Police. Into his small world consisting of wife, Suma (Shobana) and son Abi enters Swapna(Abhirami) who sees her dream man in him and falls head over heels in love with him, even overlooking the fact that he is married. In the meantime, a group of hard-core terrorists led by Lucifer Munna (Arun Pandiyan) and Janisha (Rasika) wreak havoc at various places. Our hero naturally, clashes with them. Then on there is hot chase, kidnapping, arrests, questioning et al, leading to a climax with lot of action.

The weakness of the film is its meandering script (by T Damodaran and Rajendra Prasad). While the main track of the story is terrorists and terrorism, there is the obsession of Swapna on one hand and on the other hand, there is the story of the issueless couple, Dr Balachandran and Nalini. However, all these are carried on together with an ease that is typical of I V Sasi. He also makes it a point to restrain Swapna's character by making her realize the problems that she is creating in the hero’s married life.

Mohanlal carries the role of Ganga Prasad with his usual characteristic ease while Rasika, Seema and Arun Pandiyan excel in their respective roles. Shobhana, who has made a comeback after a considerable gap, hasn't got much to do while Abhirami is OK. Jayanan Vincent's cinematography, editing by Murali Narayanan and art direction by C K Suresh and Shashi Perumanoor are the highlights of the film. Gireesh Puthencherry’s songs set to tune by Bharadwaj have a Tamil flavour. With so many characters moving in and out of the frames and so many tracks of the plot moving simultaneously, Sradha is a typical I V Sasi film.

Priyadarshan, who was a hotshot director of Malayalam films and now, a big-time director all over India, makes his tamil film debut with this wonderful, entertaining film starring Karthik and Bhanupriya. The story is very simply told. Karthik is a schoolteacher who learns the concept of love thru letters, thanks to his friends. Saying anymore would spoil the movie's plot, so better left unsaid. Just watch this great movie if you get a chance.

Priyadarshan, as aforementioned, makes a brilliant debut and does a wonderful job with the direction as well as the scripting (screenplay was actually done by Malayalam actor Srinivasan). Karthik gives another fantastic performance to his credit (watch out for the scenes nearing the climax). In his time, Karthik got overshadowed by the likes of Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth - who I have no problem saying that he (Rajini) is nowhere near Karthik's talent. Karthik never really got his due, despite working with some of the great directors in tamil cinema. (ex: Mani Ratnam, Fazil, Priyadarshan, Sridhar, Bharathiraja, etc.,) Bhanupriya gives an average performance - nothing really to rave about. The surprise of the pack is Nasser, who is tamil cinema's most underrated actor. He gives a brooding, almost a menacing performance. Some of the others - Janakaraj, Charlie, V.K. Ramasami, etc., are just about okay. P.C. Sriram shows why he is the one of India's best cinematographers. The opening scene, in the railway station, is one of the many brilliant shots that takes place in this movie. Ilayaraja provides another blockbuster soundtrack. All the songs are wonderful and beautifully picturised by P.C. Sriram. The pick of the lot is "Kaadhal Kavidhaigal..." for its wonderful flute work by Ilayaraja. Nice to see Mohanlal, Priyadarshan's favorite actor, in a guest appearance alongside Karthik. Simply put, an absolute gem of a film.
