That still, small VOICE

There's nothing quite like finishing something you've started. Two years ago I started out with a dream. I wanted to be happy and I would do anything to achieve that happiness. Now, before you go there (wherever that is), let me explain.

I wanted to go back to school, it was like a fire burning in the pit of my belly and one which needed to be fed. I remember mentioning it to a few people, because that's what I do, and hearing that what I wanted to do was crazy. Nevertheless, I pressed on, you know when you hear that little voice that keeps nagging you? Call it the Holy Spirit, Jiminy Cricket, whatever, it just won't stop. I've learned to listen to that nagging voice, it never leads me astray. Fast forward to 2013. I did it! I am now the proud recipient of two Master's degrees. One in Entertainment Business and the other is a Master's in Fine Arts for Creative Writing. Watch out Hollywood.

The voice is back and nagging more than ever, and I want to listen actually, I will listen. I want to go, NOW! But, I have to wait, wait until that voice tells me to move, how to do it and when to do it. I rejoice in the knowledge "that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens ME." I rejoice in the fact that I can string a sentence together and I don't have the burning desire to return to school just yet, I rejoice in my successes and my failures. Most importantly, I celebrate that I am free to be ME. CELEBRATE!!!

In this time of constantly changing technology, information from five seconds is already old and obsolete. It's a fact, I chuckle at myself when five seconds seem like five hours. Oh, how times have changed.

I've spent this entire day lazing around the house, glancing at the vacuum cleaner laying on the floor and wondering why it can't just run by itself, I even entertained the thought of buying the Roomba. So, down to the task at hand, my first entry for 2012.

Being Heather, means pushing myself relentlessly. I am about to complete my second Master's program and embark upon my journey. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, much less the next second? I've watched the same show since 8 am today and I still have it playing. So, the show for me this year is, Once Upon a Time, whose basic theme is faith. Faith in your abilities or lack thereof, faith that good will always defeat evil and faith that everything will eventually work out.

This year I am pursuing a degree in Writing for Film & Television, I've had to delve deeply to pull out work of which I can be proud. This has been a bittersweet year for me, I've seen some come and many go, but it's my journey none the less.

I've come to realize that when you are living/chasing your dream there are things which will fall to the wayside. Faith is a funny thing, you either hold on to it or let it go. Live your dream, because there's only one YOU.

What You Put Out, is What You Get Back

This post is bittersweet for me, in the sense that I have successfully completed one Master’s program and I am preparing to embark upon another (what can I say, I’m a nerd and proud of it). I didn’t even want to write this blog because it would give confirmation that the end is here.

Therefore, I’m one of these people who has to have noise while studying, so I can watch TV (but I can’t listen to music because I’ll sing all the songs) and concentrate, I think that this is a super power. As I’ve already mentioned in previous writings, I always find shows to watch and this week it’s Charmed.

Now, you would think I’ve never seen this show the way I’ve been watching it these last few days and I know Netflix and Amazon love me thank goodness for streaming video. Oh, I also finished watching Psych a couple of days ago, that show is hilarious. Yes, my name is Heather and I am an entertainment junkie.

I was struck with a couple thoughts while watching these shows; first, the writing I don’t think that it’s ever really appreciated by the viewers the hard work that goes into writing the script(s). Second, well let’s just say that an actor really has to work outside of their comfort zone. I mean think about it, suppose you walk into work one and you’re told that the person in the next cubicle is going to be your buddy until further notice. An actor’s life is something like that, every week these shows have new guest stars, besides the series’ regulars. I think it’s a hard job to make it look like everything is copacetic. Plus, they have to learn new lines, deal with script changes (both writer and actor) and still try to stay on task and whatever other obligations they have waiting on the outside.

I heard it said on One Tree Hill that the easiest thing to do is tear someone else’s work down and it really is true. I’m a person who tries to be sensitive to other people’s feelings, but I cannot stand when people tear other people down. I never quite understand how you dislike someone you don’t know, the recently defunct CW’s H8r comes to mind. I marveled how people were unabashed to stand in front of a camera and proudly state how they HATED certain celebrities. Really? The show did have one redeeming quality though, they allowed the celebrities to meet their accusers, and it was rewarding to see the accusers eat humble pie.

You have to be a very strong person to handle harsh criticism, and I take my hat off to those who can stand in front of the camera and take. I think what gets lost in translation is that the people we see standing before us in the spotlight are people doing what they love, because when you take away the script they’re regular people like you and me, Gary Dourdan formerly of CSI – Crime Scene Investigation was quoted, “I have to protect myself because people think that because you come into 25 million homes every week, they know you. For while the physical scars will fade, the spoken word is indelibly imprinted in the recesses of the mind. Think good thoughts, speak good thoughts you can start with you.

As I prepare to embark upon a new chapter in my life, I am struck with the enormity of it all. I began 2011 with the promise that I was going to take my life back and the months that ensued led me to proclaim and discover that life’s contentment can be found in doing what you love and loving what you do.

I am also an agent of positive thinking and encourage people to see beyond what’s actually in front of them. Mallika Chopra said it best in an article by Tennile Robinson, “I am a big believer in the ritual of actually setting it and articulating it. A lot of us have so many things in our head and hearts that we always want to do, but the process of actually articulating it is important.”http://www.inc.com/articles/201111/mallika-chopra-intent.com-power-of-intent.html

I have never been a person who conformed; I always refused to apply the label that others wanted for me. I fought for my individuality and uniqueness, this year has reinforced what I know, believe and like about myself. I’ve accepted that not everyone is going to like or love me, but I can do my best to be different and not feed into what the world tells me I should be or think.

This being said I wanted to mention my show of the month, The Vampire Diaries. Of course, I watched every episode at least five times and have aided and abetted in my cousin’s addiction to the show (she was determined not to like it, she’s now a fan). I can always find some deeper meaning in everything (I call it a gift), and this show is no different.

The name of the show, by itself, relates to two of the main characters (vampires) while diaries relates to the journals kept by both the main female character and her ancestors. What struck me about this show, is something that always perplexes me, I remember learning that prejudice is not innate; instead, it is taught and learned. The reason why I present this is because when reviewing the history of the vampires in the show, it was indicated that fear was the motivation to rid the town of them.

The vampires often feared for their lives and kept their true selves secret for fear of being killed; essentially, they really wanted to live in peace. Of course, it wouldn’t be a show if there was no antagonism, hence the almost annihilation of the vampires, the revenge seeking vampires, etc.

My point to all this is that there are so many people in the world who are unhappy who feel they don’t measure up, I believe that greater is the content of a man’s character rather than the color of his skin or his background. It’s always so easy to find flaws in everyone else but the strength comes in remembering that “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.” The trick to remember is that in every situation is that you be the calm, do not let the situation control you instead you control yourself in the situation.http://nlt.scripturetext.com/1_john/4.htm

I am thankful for the opportunities which I have encountered this past year and over the years, because it has shaped me into the person who I am today.

Finally, I am glad that I am part of an industry where you are allowed to express yourself freely and know that you are supported. It takes guts to be out there on that limb, and while you feel that you are alone sometimes, remember that there is always someone in the shadows keeping a watchful eye.

Getting Closer to my Dream

I have to admit that at this stage (the near completion of my graduate school program) that my emotions are bittersweet. On the one hand, I can’t wait for it to be over and on the other, I’m a little fearful. That being said, these last few months have been both challenging and rewarding. This month is Business Plan Development, in this class we had to incorporate EVERYTHING, which we learned, and put it all into one document before THE BIG ONE.

So, we all know that my business idea is to create a music production company focusing on the different music of the Caribbean. I’ve played around with this idea for years and being so close to seeing it come to fruition, leaves me speechless (hard to believe I know). I’ve never really thought about all what goes into business, but now I have a stronger appreciation for people who have the guts to pursue their dreams.http://www.howstuffworks.com/business-plans.htm

I’ve learned so much over these past few months that it’s a little overwhelming to realize that I am fast approaching the finish line. Compiling information over the last few months granted me the perspective I needed to determine if this is something I really want to pursue (look out world). In my travails today, I stumbled upon an article by Richard Branson in www.entrepreneur.com. Realistically speaking, I would love to be uber successful off the bat, practically thinking that’s probably not going to happen, everything takes time and overnight success is fleeting (I think I’ll wait instead).

All of the industry experts have reminded me that I need to stay on target. I need to know what I want, how am I going to achieve and be realistic about my expectations. I have to be prepared to be knowledgeable about my goals and always be prepared. I need to execute professionalism and recognize that my business and all that it encompasses is a reflection of me, how do I want to be seen by the rest of the world?

I’ve had to make some changes to my plan over the last few months, the biggest one was the tagline. It took forever to come to me; it’s now Hear the Caribbean (catchy isn’t it?). I’ve also had to broaden my target market instead of just opening it to just male youths in the United States, I’ve broadened it to include the most obvious audience; those of Caribbean descent. I also didn’t realize how much money I would really need, so I’m going to need to rework some numbers. As far as what would be the most important to my potential investors, obviously the money (WOW!), but also the target market, the description of the business and the product. Most investors will ask the question how do I plan to build, promote and expand my business. My response will be through hard work, dedication and knowledge. As we draw nearer to the end of the chapter of this part of my life, I am charged now to write about experts in the field of writing and/or reviewing business plans. It has always been my dream to bring forth the other types of Caribbean music so that the world could see us in more than one dimension. For this writing, I will be comparing the styles and suggestions of two industry experts.

My first expert is Peter Spellman, Director of Music Business Solutions and Director of Career Development at Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA. Mr. Spellman brings to the table over twenty years of experience as a musician, advisor and businessperson. This is a great advantage because who better than a “hands on” person to shed light on all aspects of a specific field.http://www.mbsolutions.com/articles/writing_music_business_plan.html

My second expert is Lee Ann Obringer, a writer for howstuffworks.com. Both of these experts can’t stress enough that one needs to have a passion for what one wants to do and to have a plan. One might not need a lot of money (but you will need some), but a plan is critical. You’ve got to see where you’re headed, at the risk of sounding dramatic when you go to bed at night YOU PLAN to wake up the next day, otherwise..(Well you get the picture).

Writing a plan allows you to focus, it allows you to be creative and it gives you structure. Additionally, when seeking investors being it family, friends or outside sources everyone wants to see and understand the whole picture. It also gives credibility and affords you reliability. You can’t just go to the bank and say you want $5, 000, they’ll want to know the who, what, why, where, when and how’s of it all. I remember when I used to go to my grandfather to ask him for an advance on my allowance (can you hear the story already?), he would ask me why did I need the money, where was the allowance from a month ago and was this going to be an ongoing thing? I caught on pretty fast, if I wasn’t prepared to answer his questions then I wasn’t going to get my money, so guess what I NEEDED to have a plan.

One of my favorite contestants from Donald Trump’s Apprentice is Dr. Randall Pinkett. His quiet confidence and demeanor really struck a chord with me and he proved that the odds could be defied. These three experts emphasized that a future entrepreneur needs to have a plan. Include in the plan your passion, your goals and your research. No one is just going to give you money, get your plan and act together.

Be the Eye of the Storm like Jennifer Aniston

This month my new obsession has been watching Friends (I find a new show to watch every month, lol). Have no fear Burn Notice fans, it will be back next month. I couldn’t help noticing while watching Friends, something I never appreciated when it originally aired, the excellent writing, production and acting involved.

Yes, I always strive for excellence in all my work, but I couldn’t help feeling a little intimidated by the journey I am preparing to embark upon. To speak to some of my fellow classmates, they would tell you that they think that I am crazy for pursuing a second Master’s, but the heart wants what it wants. Therefore, returning to my point, while watching the show, I couldn’t help but admire Jennifer Aniston’s acting (she cracks me up) and it led me to remembering her very public divorce from Brad Pitt.

Now I don’t/didn’t choose sides, because it’s not my place. I did, however, get tired of all the speculation of who did what, who got what, etc. I am always impassioned by the feelings of those in the media spotlight. I know that those who are in the paparazzi are just doing their jobs and on the other level, it keeps the celebrity in the spotlight. I can’t help thinking, come on give them a break. It’s difficult enough to have a relationship end, but it’s even more difficult when it’s thrown into the spotlight.

I look at Jennifer Aniston and admire how she handled herself through the entire ordeal. I am of the belief that you fight anger with peace and you can grow from any and every negative experience, Ms. Aniston’s done that. She’s kept her mouth shut and never utters anything negative about her former spouse and has tried to move on with her life. Yet, the media is still hungry to know what happened in this “fairytale marriage.” Any negative (or seen as negative) comments have been uttered by Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie only to be recanted because their comments were misconstrued.http://marriage.about.com/od/entertainmen1/p/bradpitts.htm

Like I said, I haven’t chosen sides, but, I have chosen to admire and respect Jennifer Aniston’s choice on how to handle this difficult situation. It is understood, but must be said, that when one chooses to become a celebrity one is ultimately giving up oneself and is at the mercy of the media. The Other Side of Me.......

Technology is a luxury, which is always changing. Even at this writing, something new is probably being invented or improved. For example, this past week Amazon.com answered the challenge to Apple’s iPad2 by introducing it’s own version, Kindle Fire.www.amazon.com

Now, some may question why I’ve chosen to write about this,

but I can’t answer that question it’s just something that intrigued me and because I’m trying to convince myself not to buy it (lol). I really was inspired to write about this because, since I’ve been in school this year I’ve come to appreciate the hard work and dedication that goes into all things entertainment. I am a TV junkie by nature, and since I voluntarily gave up cable so that I could focus on my studies, I’ve come to appreciate the finer things of today. Don’t get too excited though, I still have my favorite shows downloaded onto my computer (I couldn’t completely give it up).

For example, this week I’ve been watching Friends, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108778/and remembered when it first came out how “edgy” it was supposedly was in that area, and though it did not use hard core vernacular it was still hard core back then, and this was only about 18 years ago. Now, we are so conditioned to hearing those words that a lot of us dismiss it. We’ve even advanced from watching regular broadcast network programs and moved to more cable access productions. I remember learning in undergrad that by around this era most viewers would matriculate towards cable where edgier programming could be viewed so said so done.

Even watching Friends this week had me chuckling; I looked at the “archaic” cordless phones, the dinosaur cell-phones and heck, I even laughed at myself because even I was different back then (very long story). I’ve come to appreciate the talent behind excellence and never letting go of your convictions. I’ve always been the kind of person who needed to prove everyone wrong. The more someone tells me I can’t do something, the more I’m motivated to show them I can.

This being said, where would we be today if the inventors and innovators of the world listened to the naysayers, probably still rubbing two sticks together and hoping for a spark. So, for all the movers and the shakers out there, this blog is dedicated to you, no one knows the end to your story but you and the journey only ends when you do. So, keep on keeping on? I’ve always asked the question what price would you pay to become a celebrity, perhaps the better question is

What price would YOU pay to follow YOUR dreams?

Living Your Dream

I wrote in my last blog about daring to be different. Let’s face it; those of us who are pursuing careers in the entertainment probably always felt that way. I also touched upon on how much the entertainment industry has changed, not only within itself but also within the world. Shakespeare wrote:

All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players:

They have their exits and their entrances;

I found this to be true after watching the now cancelled television series Prison Break. If you are not familiar with the show, it’s based on the premise of a man being falsely accused of murdering the brother of the Vice-President of the United States. His protestations that he did not commit the murder fall on deaf ears, until his brother, who is an engineer finally believes him and steps in to help him break out of the prison. What is interesting in all this, outside the realm of the prison break, is the research and dedication put into by the people behind the scenes as well as those in front of the characters.

I am one these people who sits back to read the credits, so a lot of times I will recognize the names of producers, the assistant and even the music supervisors. I had the privilege of being reared by my grandparents who were both born in 1919. I refer to their birth year because they were around when the television was invented and saw some of the very first television shows; and because I was in the Caribbean at the time, it would sometimes take at least a year for new shows to reach us. I’m sure many of us can remember relying on limited channel selections opposed to today. In Trinidad, we had two channels and they showed the same things at the same time, it just depended on whichever give you the better reception.

I remember that is was almost tantamount to see people kissing, using obscene language or not dressing up to the nines. Nowadays, the entertainment industry is more in touch with reality. I, for one, appreciate the hard work and dedication put into a project and can comfortably feel that anything that hits the airwaves wasn’t just thrown together. I believe for all of us in the entertainment industry that we are perfectionists in our own right.

Entertainment, no matter which form, always has a message. The message could be something as light as; life really isn’t all that serious to if you stand for nothing you’ll fall for anything. Going through life’s ups and downs has taught me that I can only be as good as I think I am, no matter what I do I should do it to my best ability. I cannot pinpoint any one person or thing that I admire most, because there are too many from which to choose. I will say this I admire the strength and dedication to move on from the no’s.

I often remind people that it’s always easy to do the wrong thing; it takes guts to stand up for the right thing. I will not allow others to make my decisions or form my opinions, I can do bad all by myself. Where would we be today if our innovators had not followed their dreams? As always,

Dare to be Different

As this year begins to come to an end (yes, I know it’s still September), I reflect on the times when, as a child, it seemed as though time seemed to drag. I remember thinking that "old" meant being 29, 39 or my grandmother’s age.

Now, as an adult, I reflect in wonder at how much everything has changed, from television to music, from penmanship to computers to the acceptance of the differences of others (this part is still being worked by a lot of people) yet, progress has come a long way. While my roots don’t begin in the United States, I have, in essence, re-planted myself. I think back to the times growing up in the Caribbean when the biggest and greatest thing at the time was to know someone in the States or to travel there. Nevertheless, often times, we as human beings are jaded by our circumstances and surroundings and are influenced by those same circumstances and surroundings. Moreover, for many people, it’s just difficult to think outside of the box.

This being said, I am glad and proud to say that I am one of those individuals, who is courageous enough to think outside of the box. I don’t subscribe to the belief that I should worry about what other people might think. I do cling to the hope, however, that my actions may be pleasing to God. It is not my position to judge but it is my position to love; and with that love comes acceptance. We all have things we regret, but we also have things for which we can rejoice.

The entertainment industry is probably the largest industry that accepts people for who they are. I read somewhere that Hollywood is a place where people can go to re-invent themselves, and they can keep doing so. Gone are the images of “perfect people,” instead we are surrounded by people who experience difficulties in life (just like us ordinary folks). In one of my earlier classes this year, we read John C. Maxwell’s Developing the Leader Within You, and one of the most inspiring quotes I took from this book was “people don’t resist change, people resist being changed.”

The entertainment industry has shown that change isn’t bad, it’s just different. The entertainment industry also began the trend, in my opinion, that acceptance of all things different is the right thing to do. It has shown those of us who dare to be different that we have a voice and to always chase your dreams. After all, no one can take away your dreams unless you let them.

On Monday August 15, 2011, I had the opportunity to interview one of Maryland’s most prestigious entertainment attorneys, Cynthia Blake Sanders, Esq.

Besides being an associate at Ober/Kaler Attorneys at Law, Ms. Sanders is also an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland where she teaches entertainment and sports law. She is also involved in many community and professional organizations, which include, but are not limited to:

1. American Advertising Federation, Baltimore Chapter

2. Maryland School for the Arts

3. Maryland Lawyers for the Arts

4. Baltimore Downtown Partnership

5. Safety Providers Network

6. Black Cherry Puppet Theater

The above-mentioned are just only a few of the organizations in which Ms. Sanders is involved. You can find out more about her on www.ober.com. Ms. Sanders was licensed to practice law in the state of Maryland in 1999. “ She focuses her practice on copyright, trademark, advertising, arts and media law matters, technology transfer and works closely with her firm’s Intellectual Property and Business Groups.” (Ober, 2011)

We conducted our interview via telephone and Ms. Sanders quickly dispelled any nervousness I was experiencing with her conversational manner. Ms. Sanders was quite interested in Full Sail University and my personal pursuits. I shared with her that I wanted to have a company one day akin to Walt Disney Corporation (Disney). I want to be able to produce television shows, movies and music.

The biggest piece of advice that Ms. Sanders shared with me was be prepared to work hard and if I wanted to be a phenomenon like Disney that I would need to acquire my rights horizontally and vertically, meaning own ALL rights to everything (that will come in time). She advised me as well to double check EVERYTHING:

1. Employee Agreements

2. Proprietary Rights

3. Building Rights

The list goes on. There are special rights for film as there are for television and most importantly when negotiating, don’t give away too much. I must also have separate agreements for all persons involved in my projects.

Overall, my conversation was extremely enlightening, she made aware of the entertainment industry in Baltimore and encouraged me to investigate and network as well. It was great speaking with her, because it proved what many of our professors have been stating over the course of the last few months. There are those who are willing to HELP us along the way, but we have to make the first step. I, personally, was humbled that Ms. Sanders had taken the time to speak with and was so open with her wisdom and guidance.

A Different Type of Law

So, if you've been following me for these last few months, you're well aware of my mantra, 'What would you do to become a celebrity?' Well, this month is probably my most favorite month (not only because it's my birthday month), but because I am finally studying one of my most favorite subjects, Entertainment Law. This is always an interesting subject and one which always needs to be taken seriously, so for all you aspiring celebrities, take a gander and find a moment to consider the ramifications that could/can occur without the right legal representation; specifically an entertainment attorney.

Copyrighting any creation is vital, copyrighting as defined by Merriam-Webster is
"the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same." For the purpose of this writing, I will endeavor to illustrate instances where some copyright laws were infringed upon and how they could have been avoided.
In an article entitled "BMI Sues Olive'Or Twist Bar for Copyright Infringement of Unlicensed Performance of Five Songs," entertainment attorney, Paul B. Overhauser. Mr. Overhauser said, "It was alleged that the Olive'Or Twist Bar in Elkhart, IN, infringed upon the copyrights to certain songs to which BMI owns. Attorneys for BMI argued that these songs were performed at this establishment without BMI's permission, (copyright infringement). " Why? The issue at hand is that the bar should have sought permission from BMI to play these songs in its public establishment. All in all, in addition to getting its liquor license the bar should have also inquired whether or not it needed a license to play music. Per Mr. Overhauser, "These types of cases are very friendly to the intellectual property owner, and a plaintiff is entitled to attorney's fees from the defendant." Michael Zhang wrote about a legal battle between photographer Mike Hipple and sculptor Jack Mackie. http://www.petapixel.com/2011/07/07/dance-steps-on-broadway-lawsuit-ends-with-photographer-paying-settlement/. This article spoke of Mr. Hipple using Mr. Mackie's creative works for commercial use. While it is agreed that Mr. Mackie's work has been presented for public display, it is however not to be used for commercial purposes without his written or verbal consent. This case was settled out of court where Mr. Hipple paid Mr. Mackie an undisclosed amount.
In another article by Mr. Zhang, he writes of another case between Richard Prince and Patrick Cariou. http://www.petapixel.com/2011/03/22/rephotographer-richard-price-loses-copyright-infringement-case/. Mr. Cariou, a photographer, charged Mr. Prince with copyright infringement. It appears that Mr. Prince modified 41 photographs taken by Mr. Cariou and presented them as his own work in a gallery exhibition. Once again, proper permission was not received in addition to Mr. Prince's profits, amassing to over $10 million. Mr. Prince tried to argue that it was fair use, but that is not the case since Mr. Cariou holds the rights to his own work and does so for as long as he's alive and 70 years thereafter. Mr. Prince lost and has to pay, the amount has not been disclosed.
Overall, the cases discussed above proved one important fact, know all of the facts and cover all bases. No one likes to be caught unaware. It's great to have people who you can trust but, it is equally important to be well-informed yourself. Better to take the time to learn now than to pay later. Your work is a reflection of you and credit should be given where it's due. I have always maintained that it is better to do things right from the start, rather than having to constantly look over your shoulder and trying to remember lies. There are unscrupulous characters in every walk of life and they can't be allowed to get away with bad behavior. Treasure what you own and own what you treasure.

The Other Side of Stardom

Do you remember the days of old when school was out and reruns were the highlight of the summer? I was thinking of this while watching one of my favorite shows, Burn Notice.

It made me think about how much the entertainment industry has grown. I remember that there used to be a classic look expected in the entertainment industry and as far as I believe this is when spin-doctors began to emerge. Everyone wanted to live the glamorous life, to be like those frequently photographed, never considering what their lives might be like when the cameras turn off.

Let’s face it; many of us pursuing careers in the entertainment industry do so because we have a strong, driving passion for this industry. This industry has grown rapidly, many of us grew up watching Sesame Street and The Electric Company; and it is this generation, which is the driving force behind the new entertainment industry, the likes of J.J. Abrams, Matt Nix and Mark Schwahn, just to name a few. These three have all had successful shows, with almost cult-like followings; Alias, Burn Notice, One Tree Hill, respectively.

By now, you’ve probably determined that these are some of my favorite shows and I am one of the cult members. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve watched each of these shows, really I can’t, but it’s more than 10 times for each. Therefore, as I’ve watched each of these shows, I’ve come to appreciate even more the journey of which I’m embarking. Each of these men are not just creators of their respective shows, but also served as writers and executive producers. They’ve also pushed the envelope as to how television is viewed. Gone is my grandmother’s television, where she enjoyed and still enjoys watching Westerns and my mother’s soap operas.

Today, we can enjoy more realistic television, barring the reality shows, we can watch television drama unfold with real –life events (One Tree Hill) or get lost in the fantasy of being a super spy (Burn Notice and Alias), a sign of the changing times. The entertainment industry has changed so much now, that people don’t even think about being THE STAR, it’s about telling a story, it’s about getting the audience so engaged in what’s on the screen that they forget about their reality for those 60 minutes or so.

Though it seems as though television and movies have been around forever, it’s really only been a true element since my generation (Generation X) and has grown by leaps and bounds since. This generation has redefined entertainment to inconceivable levels and it’s exciting to see how further it will go. The task seems daunting but it’s also thrilling. Would you be willing to withstand the test? No matter the job is in the entertainment industry, like everything else in life, there is rejection but also rewards. All it ever takes is drive and determination.

What's in a name, living La Vida Lohan

A new month brings new adventures and this month I am in a new class, Product and Artist Management. I've been particularly excited about this class, for reasons which are too numerous to explain. One of our assignments was to identify someone within the entertainment industry who we would like to represent, I chose Lindsay Lohan.

Now I know most people would shudder at the sound of her name, but I believe that anything is possible. Think about this, you know who she is at the mention of her name. A name is nothing more than a brand, what thoughts come to your mind when you hear Lindsay’s name, how about Kleenex, Disney or Harry Potter? We all have our own thoughts and ideas when we hear certain things and we identify differently. So, what’s in a name? A name identifies you, it’s YOUR brand, it makes or breaks you.

To many, Lindsay may be seen as a total mess, someone who should be forgotten. I see someone who needs help, someone who needs to find herself and be happy with herself. There is no doubt that she is talented, I’ve maintained that her problem is her current management, namely her mother. Often times we are a reflection of our environment, there’s a saying that goes you can’t change where you came from, but you can change where you’re going. I really believe that Lindsay’s acting out, she doesn’t know who to ask for help and really and truly, she doesn’t know who to trust. Once again, the name Lindsay Lohan brings to mind everything that’s been going on in her life these last few years, partying outrageously, arrests, relationships, etc. Forgotten is the person who is a successful actress. Many times, we as the public forget that actors or those in the public eye are still people. Think about this, while they may have everything you or I might dream of, they still have bills to pay (they just have bigger salaries), many times the things we see them with is just something that someone gave to them so that they can get free advertising, for example; clothes, shoes, glasses, the list goes on. We absorb those costs as the consumer; in essence, the manufacturer still wants to recoup the costs for those freebies. In addition, people in the public eye experience bankruptcy, medical problems, money problems and basically problems. Life is harder when you live under a microscope where every action, thought or word is immediately scrutinized and dissected. A lot of times people add 2 +2 and come up with 5, those in the public eye can’t freely express themselves without the risk of being attacked for having their own thoughts. Sometimes I think that free speech doesn’t apply to those in the public eye.

The bottom line is this, how many times have you been misunderstood, how many times have you been frustrated or vented? Did it ever appear on the front page? Did you see it on the nightly news? Chances are it didn’t, but perhaps it affected your immediate circle and that by itself was traumatic, now think about someone in the public eye whose problems are magnified a million times more, not a comfortable feeling is it? It boils down to this, until you take control of your life and put people in it who tell you what you need to hear opposed to what you want to hear, you can’t move forward. Problems are just distractions, obstacles attempting to blind you from your destiny. A great success case is Robert Downey, Jr.; remember how he used to screw up? Look at him now. WE as human beings are quick to make snap judgments without knowing the whole situation. Life has taught me as well that unless it’s heard from the horse’s mouth it’s just speculation or gossip. Would you like to live under a microscope?

Introducing Lawrence LaBee IV

Staying with my theme, “What price are you willing to pay to become a celebrity,” I had the honor and privilege this week to interview someone who I consider to be a celebrity, Lawrence LaBee IV.

Lawrence LaBee IV is the Digital Media Director for RGI Marketing in Orlando, FL, a producer for ESPN Radio and a recent Full Sail University Graduate (4/11). I was initially introduced to him via twitter.com and a common link. For those of you not familiar with Twitter, like Facebook; Twitter often makes recommendations for people to follow and Mr. LaBee was one of those recommendations for me. http://twitter.com/#!/LawrenceLaBee

Charged with the task this week to interview a professional actively working in the entertainment, media, or sports industry in a deal-making capacity, Mr. LaBee’s online personality struck a chord within me; a person marching to his own beat. His motto is, “You can’t hope to change a problem until you change yourself,” a prolific and prophetic statement. http://about.me/LLaBee

Mr. LaBee shared with me how he acquired his position at RGI Marketing; he told me that while still in attendance at Full Sail, he discovered his love for Digital Marketing. He began posting ads on Craigslist requesting to shadow someone in that specific genre for about a day or so. Though he had several offers, he chose RGI Marketing; he was initially hired as the Social Media Marketing Strategist and rose to the rank of Digital Media Director.

Not going into specifics, on a daily basis he negotiates contracts with different clients in addition to putting out fires with co-workers and subordinates. Project Management and Business Sales are always on the menu from the time he walks through the door. Lawrence LaBee IV is proving that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with, he knows what he wants, he knows how he’s going to get it and if you’re willing to travel with him you can buy a ticket for the ride.

So, as always, what price are you willing to pay to become a celebrity? It’s not all glamour and glitz, remember to whom much is given, much is required. Are you willing to pay?

The Nitty Gritty of being an Actor/Actress

Always being one to make the best of a bad situation, this time that I have as an unemployed student has caused me to be rather perceptive to things which I normally don't notice. While watching an episode of The Glades, it occurred to me that it's really not all that glamorous to be an actor. The actors actually trudged through what really looked like dirty marsh water for one scene, far from glamorous.
This caused me to think, EXACTLY what do upcoming actors/actresses endure to achieve their aspiring level of stardom? I've never truly appreciated what a lot of people do for their craft. Like many, when I sit in front of a screen, I prepare myself to be entertained, to be removed from MY reality and submerged into another. But, being an actor/actress is a lot like being me right now, dealing with a lot of rejection, but you still have to keep plugging at it. http://www.ehow.com/how_622_become-actor-actress.html

Like anything else worth having in life, you have to have the passion, the drive, the ability to bounce back from rejection; remember, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. What would you do?

So, this year I decided to take back my life and basically just do me. I decided that I could achieve this by returning to school and pursuing my dream, getting into the entertainment industry. It's been tough because like many people who are "artists", I am a perfectionist. One thing that's been hammering at me is, what do I want to do when I finally get my degree?
I have several ideas, but can't seem to narrow it down, I want to write, I want to act, I want to sing, I want to be a producer (maybe I should change my name to Jackie) Jack of all trades, but I digress. Since school began I have been without television because let's face it, it's extremely distracting, so I'm kind of oblivious to what's going on in the rest of the world unless it pops up on my MSN homepage. So, keeping with my theme, The price of being a celebrity, I am briefly going to touch upon Donald Trump.

Now I was completely unaware that the Donald was behind this whole birthers movement or that he was adamant about President Obama providing proof that he was indeed a real US citizen. What? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/27/donald-trump-obama-birth-_n_854267.html

Always one to call a spade a spade, I wonder if this wasn't borderline racism, because yes, President Obama is black, but he's always made it known that he was a human first and color was just secondary. He's a black man reared by a white grandmother and mother with an Asian sister and from Hawaii. Correct me if I'm wrong but, isn't America supposed to be the melting pot, doesn't the United States promote itself as the land of freedom, equality and opportunity? Then why is there an issue about his place of birth, because let's keep it real, if he didn't fit the criteria would he be in The White House. The Powers that Be are like Santa Claus, they made that list and checked it not twice but probably 20 times.

I don't hide behind my color, it is what it is, I've always wanted to be viewed for who I was and not the color of my skin and I often wish that everyone was blind so that we couldn't use color as an excuse. But, unfortunately, it is something that thrives in American society. Just last year, I am was so sick of filling out paperwork that asked for race (by the way the race is human, it's not the color) that I decided that I wouldn't fill that part out. I just put other other. Getting back to my point, those of us in the entertainment industry experience new things on a daily basis and we set the tone for how the public responds, because we know what it's like to be different.

I appreciate the likes of Wanda Sykes, David Letterman and others speaking up and out regarding Trump's antics. http://celebs.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474979303497. But it begs mentioning, yes even the president is a target. When you choose to become a public figure, you open the door to EVERYONE, and that includes them coming into the kitchen and sitting at the table.

The good news is this, President Obama didn't really exchange tit for tat, he merely produced the requested document and now what does Donald Trump have to say? Trump even had the audacity to get upset with David Letterman for stating that his remarks smacked of racism. What's that saying? If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

There are so many more things to worry about; hunger, lack of jobs, homelessness, etc. Well, it goes without mention if this is what it takes to become a public figure, what would you do? What are you willing to sacrifice to become a celebrity?

I have a story to tell

This week I've been charged with the task of identifying someone in the entertainment industry who is an inspiration to me, I chose J.J Abrams, creator,writer and executive producer of Lost, Alias and some other shows and also director of Mission Impossible 3 (in addition to some other movies).

Now, I will dare to say that while I was supposed to be studying I've been engaged in watching Alias, all 5 seasons by the way, because it was for school. Who knew that it was actually going to be the truth? So, while visiting TED.com, J.J. spoke of a magic box concept that we all use to conceptualize our dreams. He spoke of his fascination with creating things, of how his grandfather introduced him to his curiosity and also fed it, in addition to how things have changed, technologically speaking.

This takes me back to when I was a kid growing up in the Caribbean and thinking of how great America was, the unimaginable always happened in America according to everyone around me and that was the place to be if you wanted anything to happen. If you happened to know someone or visited America, you were basically exalted as a celebrity, I remember being proud whenever I received a shipment from my mother with things from America, you couldn't tell me anything. J.J. reminded though of my grandparents when he spoke of his, my grandparents were my parents I never had the luxury of enjoying them as grandparents and probably vice versa. My grandmother, in particular, instilled some very strong qualities in me, which I hold on to very strongly to to this very day.

I never really appreciated my grandmother as a child, I honestly believed that she was put on this earth to make my life a living nightmare, little did I know that she was shaping me and preparing me for the road ahead. I left Trinidad in July 1980 to embark on a life that I never would have imagined or wished for anyone, to live with a mother I only knew through presents and infrequent phone calls and to also basically be cut off from all that I knew. My grandmother's discipline was one of the many things which has helped along the way. J.J. spoke of how his it was his grandfather who gave him his first camera, my grandmother was the one who taught me strength and survival. When I was often berated for not being pretty, being a mistake or not being enough of anything, it was my grandmother's voice which I would often hear encouraging and pushing me. I was told I wouldn't amount to anything, but the survivor that I am says otherwise. I learned that you can't run from who you truly are, because that you keeps up with you. How funny is that?

I am a firm believer in chasing and catching your dreams, and I have also come to the realization that it always starts with one. For J.J. it was his grandfather, for me it was my granny. J.J. also alluded to a quote my grandmother always used (her memory's not that good these days), you always have those people in your life telling you you can't do, listen to YOU. In one of the TED.com videos, a young man in Kenya, Africa said this, "change only happens when you see things differently."http://www.ted.com/talks/view/lang/eng//id/955

While I'm not completely sure what I want to do in the entertainment industry, I am sure that I can do any and everything. J.J. reminded me that the possibilities are endless. Chris Anderson, Executive Director of TED.com, reminded me that the world is my oyster, there are more people out there like me and I have a story to tell.

The Reality of the Entertainment Industry

This week, I've optioned to discuss a matter that weighs heavily on the hearts and minds of those in the entertainment industry, piracy. Piracy is an issue that plagues the industry no matter where you are in the world, so much to the extent that there are very strict laws worldwide when copyright infringement is involved.

Per the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), "Copyright laws protect the rights of people who create movies, TV shows, artwork and other products by providing the creator with exclusive rights to sell, license or otherwise use his or her creative work." www.mpaa.org To this day, I am always still baffled by the cavalier manner those who feel that it's okay to "pirate" any type of media.

For example, the other day I was speaking to my manicurist (yes, I have him on speed dial), and we were just chatting. So he asks me how school was going (GREAT! Can't wait until Spring Break), and I mention that I just purchased the Insanity Exercise DVD collection (because I'm insane). He looks up at me and says, "You're not going to do it." I reply, "Of course I am," by the way the shrink-wrap is still on the DVDs. Anyway, my manicurist says to me that he wants a copy, "a copy of what?" I say, and he says, "the DVDs." I paused for a minute and looked at him, eyes agape, and said that I don't do that, he says, "I do."

The piracy issue is something near and dear to my heart. How often do you walk into nail salons, beauty salons, even on the street and observe pirated copies being played or sold. I remember being a kid and holding the tape recorder close to the radio to record a song or better yet, how about when they included that feature on the boom boxes (don't even pretend that you don't remember that; but that was piracy too). I've discovered that the recipients of pirated media don't care much for the impact that their behavior causes this industry. The response that the money won't be missed is one that drives me crazy. www.chillingeffect.org/piracy/faq.cgi. I'll remind them of that when they complain about ticket or concession prices.

So, I look my manicurist straight in the eye and ask, "Tell me, if I walked out of here without paying, what would you do?" Without hesitation he says, "I would chase you down, call you or eventually call the police." "Really?", I said, "You would really do that?" "Darn straight, I am working too hard for someone not to pay me, I have a family to take care of and bills to pay." And there I had my answer, so I quite skillfully turned the question around to him, "So, why do you do it to other people? You do that every time you play, copy or buy a bootleg ANYTHING. Doesn't feel good when the shoe is on the other foot does it?" He stared me down, finished my nails and took my payment. He then told me not to come back,"Whatever, I'll be back in 2 weeks."

In short, piracy will always be an issue for this industry. The reality is this, while the layman can call the police to apprehend the culprit, it's tougher for the entertainment industry. It's not just one individual committing the crime, it's millions upon millions and growing technology makes it tougher. The Great Thing about being a Celebrity

For the past few weeks, I've been commenting on the antics of celebrities with bad behavior, i.e. Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. Ignoring the desire to further report on either person, because I am of the belief that talking about it gives it unwarranted attention and encourages the behavior.

This time around, I have chosen to focus on the more positive aspect of being a celebrity. I am of the belief that the good ALWAYS outweighs the bad, but like anything else in life it always seems that the bad ALWAYS gets the attention; mostly for laughs and fodder for gossip.
Observe the humanitarian efforts of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Behind the scenes, Angelina was a humanitarian and continues to be one to this day. She may receive bad press about how her relationship with Brad Pitt began, however, what is most admirable about her is that she refuses to allow these comments to prevent her for helping those in need. She is the mother of 6, 3 of whom she adopted from other countries, impoverished countries no doubt.

Using their celebrity status, not to garner attention for their efforts, but instead use it to foster the necessary attention and actions for disparities around the world. In 2006, Angelina and Brad established the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, whose efforts are geared towards humanitarian outreach. The couple donates their own personal earnings to come to the aid of others. The Cost Of Stardom

As we gear up for another American Idol season, the anticipation of stardom fills the air. Do they really know what they're getting themselves into? Yes, they are of the belief that they are all just doing something that they love, but at what cost? To whom much is given, much is required and with great power comes great responsibility; becoming a celebrity is powerful but costly. We're probably learning more about Charlie than we really ever wanted to, and I am questioning if he really believes that he is the next Six Million Dollar Man? Does he really believe that CBS and Time Warner will pay almost anything to get him back?

Kudos to CBS and Time Warner for not giving in to his demands. www.mydaily.com/2011/.../charlie-sheens-demands-a-strong-move1/. But to be fair, Charlie recanted these outrageous demands and replaced it with demands for the crew of his show. He even accused CBS and Time Warner of reneging on their promise to pay the crew for the rest of the season. Here's a thought, maybe if he'd shown up for work in the first place, the crew would have been paid this conversation would never have taken place. Apparently, he is the only one unaware of his bad behavior.

There are some who will weigh in and voice their opinion intending to lambaste Charlie, but it only addresses the symptoms, not the issues at hand. Ever since his entrance into the limelight, Charlie has had issues: drugs, alcohol and let's not forget his very public divorce from Denise Richards. The great thing about being a celebrity is that everything you do, think or say is forever memorialized. Charlie should probably star on Celebrity Rehab next, www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-20030209-10391704.html. He thinks he can rehab on his own though; how do you think he's doing ?

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Charlie, just an issue with his behavior. Maybe one day in the future when he looks back on this time, he'll realize that his rants were just that, rants. I see this as a desperate cry for help; and unfortunately he's surrounded by people who will tell him what he wants to hear opposed to what he NEEDS to hear. Let's face it, when money is around so are friends, then the friends go when the money goes. In your time of need, you learn who your friends are not.

Charlie is on a crash and burn mission, and while it is probably terrifying his loved ones they have to allow him to make his mistakes, he won't learn otherwise. Everybody always loves to hear a comeback story. So, Charlie I'm pulling for you.

A few weeks ago I talked about the cost of being a celebrity. The loss and invasion of privacy, the desire for privacy and the desire for freedom from the microscope. So, to the American Idol contestants and those other rising stars, the question still remains; What price are you willing to pay to become a star?

For the last few weeks, we've been inundated with reports about the escapades of some Hollywood celebrities, ex. Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen. The decision to become a celebrity comes at a very steep price.

The lure of bright lights, fame and fortune blinds many to the realities of this profession. What's not seen is the blood, sweat and tears and often many years invested that people in the spotlight sacrifice. Stardom is never achieved overnight. Often it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time and even then it's still years of perseverance.

It also needs to be kept in mind that the ones seen in front of the cameras are a scant few compared to the thousands who are still scrounging to get their ten seconds of fame. A phrase that's well-known from the 80's tv show FAME, where dance teacher Lydia Grant (Debbie Allen) is sitting in class and instructing her students, with a serious look and the pounding of her dance stick, she says, " You want fame? Well, fame costs and right here is where you start paying, in sweat!" Everything in this life has a price, and the question is what are you willing to pay?

To become a celebrity means to give up yourself and all that you are. Things which are normally taken for granted suddenly becomes precious, i.e. walks in the park, going to the mall, just hanging out. When one becomes a celebrity, one becomes a public figure - that means your life is no longer private. That means a day without makeup is quickly captioned and posted before you can even return home. A date will be scrutinized and gossiped about, with everyone adding their two cents (and you thought high school was hard). Walks in the park now have to seem like a cloak and dagger mission.

In recent weeks, Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen have been subjected to much scrutiny because of drug and alcohol troubles, family troubles, etc. and because of their celebrity status, their problems have been magnified one hundred times. This makes it more difficult for them, as individuals, to deal with their problems. They are now under a microscope and it's as though their every single move is being assessed by the scientist studying them. They are not allowed with their misfortunes or misdeeds privately. Forgotten is the fact that celebrities are still people, they have the same problems like the average person.

So, the question remains, what price are you willing to pay to become a celebrity?
