Oil Paintings by Peter Goodfellow

Peter Goodfellow

Peter Goodfellow is an English artist who fell in love with Scotland. Fortunately his wife was also captivated by this country and has a great understanding of his consuming passion. The viewer of his landscapes sees this passion at a glance. The vibrant colours are arresting and the mood which is set can bring a lump to the throat.

Gerard Burns

Burns attended Glasgow Art School, graduating in 1983, but found his figurative work at odds with the artistic trend for abstract conceptualism. He then turned to his second love, music, becoming a pop singer-songwriter with his band Valerie and the Week of Wonders. After about four years, he became disillusioned with the music industry, but found new inspiration in teaching art. He was able to commit to painting full time in 1999 after a decade of teaching. His large canvases, using friends and family as models, turn ordinary scenes into mythic dramas. ‘I paint real people, real scenes, real life’ he told the Daily Mail in 2002, ‘it’s hopelessly old fashioned in some artists’ eyes, but most of what is called contemporary art is self-indulgent and trivial’. He is inspired by Velasquez, where the most casual brushstrokes create a beautiful whole. Burns has stated that ‘my goal is realism, but it’s by increasingly abstract means that realism is attained.’

Steven Campbell 1953-2007

Steven Campbell, the son of a steelworker and a steelworker himself before attending Glasgow School of Art, exploded onto the Scottish art scene in 1982 in the Scottish Arts Council exhibition ‘Scottish Art Now’. He soon became the driving force behind the group of painters (including Howson) known as the new ‘Glasgow Boys’, whose large-scale, figurative paintings marked a renaissance in painting and Glasgow in particular as a cultural centre. By the mid-1980s, Campbell’s international reputation was established with his move to New York.
