Patriotic Folded Flags

This project was taken from the archives. It is worth sharing again for all the Summer holidays coming up.

This is a simple folded paper flag which always entertained my Elementary art students every time! Cassie has enjoyed making these flags too. We decided to make some for the upcoming Patriotic Holidays over the summer! You will be amazed how simple these flags are to make!

First begin with a rectangular paper like 12x18 or 9x12 size.

Fold the paper in half short side to short side.

Fold the folded piece again, short side to short side.

Then open up the paper so you have four sections. I marked one section with a black pen.

Cut that marked section out.

Next, roll up the end of the paper that is pictured below. (this will become the flag pole)

Roll it all the way to the cut out piece and use tape or glue to hold the flag pole in place. Once it is taped it is ready to be painted or colored with markers or crayons.

Cassie used red and blue paint to design her flag.

She even designed the flag pole too. C wanted to paint the other side but needed to let it dry.

Lastly, we added metallic stickers. I think they turned out GREAT!

Recycled Junk Robots

Some of my favorite projects are done with recycled junk and this is a new one to add to the list. The idea comes from my daughter's kindergarten teacher. We've been making recycled robots at home too and I wanted to share how to make them.

Materials Needed:
recycled boxes (we mostly used food boxes)
recycled Lids and bottle caps for eyes and buttons
Cardboard tubes
glue or glue gun
aluminum foil
silvery pipe cleaners
anything else you choose

To create a robot, we first gathered some food boxes, cardboard tubes, bottle caps, and lids. We built the robot without gluing to see how it would look.

Next, we covered the boxes and cardboard tubes with aluminum foil to give the robot a cool metal look. We used a glue gun for fast dry time.

Then we glued the pieces and parts together.

Lastly, we added more bottle caps for decoration and buttons. For a finishing touch we added silver pipe cleaners and a foil tail to make a Robot Monkey.

This one is a Robot Doggie.

We'll be making more Robot Creatures soon! Such a fun project.

How to Make a Simple Pop Up

This past weekend we made pop ups. We had received a pop up card and C was intrigued how the card was made so I decided to show her how to make a simple pop up. As an Elementary Art Teacher my students would always love making any type of pop up art. Keep reading to find out how to make a simple pop up.

Materials Needed:

9x12 construction paper

Construction paper scraps

glue

scissors

First fold the construction paper in half like this, but keep it folded.

On the fold, create two cuts that are about an inch apart. You can create more cuts if you want more pop up elements.

Open up the folded paper and reverse fold the part you cut like this.

This is what the pop out part looks like from the side.

Lastly, cut out the shapes or objects that you want to pop out. If you want to add a second piece of paper to the back so there is no holes or if you want it to be a greeting card.

In our finished pop up, C connected two papers together and the caterpillar was popped out with two pop out pieces.

Our New Spirograph Set!

So last week I ordered Spirograph (yes they finally have the original for sale!). We received it a couple days ago and have been having a lot of fun with it. It is a little tricky for a 6 year old (it is labeled ages 8 and up), but I think it will be a little easier to use as time goes by. The set comes in a nice carrying case with paper and all you need to begin making "spirograph art". Instead of using pins. they put "sticky tack" in the set and I'm not sure if I like that addition, but it does make it a lot more user friendly for kids. Over all we are very happy with the set and we bought it at Amazon.com. It is definitely a blast from the past and brings back many childhood memories for me....

Chalking on Rocks

We've been away for Spring Break and did quite a bit of chalking thanks to my sister who had an ample supply of it at her house. We exhausted "chalking" on the driveway and sidewalks, so we decided to create some art on the rocks in her garden. C thought this was a great idea and I just wanted to share this fun activity that you may want to try. The great thing is that the chalk will wash away as compared to painting on rocks.

Painted Easter Sugar Cookies

We've been making Easter Cookies this week. We made my Amazing Marvelous Marbled Easter Egg Cookies and now we made these Painted Easter Cookies. The process of making sugar cookies is fun with mixing the dough, rolling out, and cutting the cookies so this is always a hit with kids. Just add in "painting the cookies" as a last step and you have a winner on your hands. We made painted sugar cookies for Christmas here too.

Materials Needed:

Rolled and cut out sugar cookies on a cookie sheet (Uncooked)

Recipe here for Sugar Cookies
Evaporated Milk (from a can)

Food Coloring

Toothpicks

ice cube tray or small containers

paint brushes that have only been used for food

To make these lovely painted cookies, first make the sugar cookies and have the uncooked cookies placed on a cookie sheet. Prepare the cookie paint by filling an ice cube tray with evaporated milk. Then, add a few drops of food coloring per each ice cube section. Mix up the food coloring with the evaporated milk with a toothpick. Now, grab your paint brushes and you are ready to paint the cookies.

After the cookies are painted, you can cook them according to the sugar cookie recipe that you choose to follow. They look gorgeous uncooked!

And they stay beautiful after they have been baked too. The nice thing about this process is that once the cookies are cooled they are ready to eat. There is no extra step to make frosting and wait for the cookies to cool!

Metallic Painted Easter Eggs

We made a mixture of commercially dyed and metallic painted Easter eggs and they turned out BEAUTIFUL! I bought the 24 Karat Easter Egg Coloring Kit which is not rated very well by Amazon.com, but we painted our eggs multicolored and we had better results than our single color metallic eggs. We even made paintings on paper with our left over paint which you can see at the end of the post.

C happily painting her eggs. She had so much fun!

She enjoyed the commercial dyes PAAS kit too.

We even painted with the metallic colors over the Commercially dyed eggs which gave a nice background color to some of the eggs.

Lastly, we used the leftover Metallic colors to make some wonderful paintings! Mom's painting below.

Rainbow Crayon Resist

Crayon Resist activities are always fun and when you add rainbows to the mix that even adds more enjoyment for kids. This is always a magical activity for kids, and why not think about pairing it up with St. Patrick's Day or Spring Weather activities?

Materials Needed:

Crayons (white always works best!)

Watercolors in rainbow colors

Paint brushes

White paper

First, draw with crayons with firm pressure onto white paper. White crayons always look coolest! Then paint with rainbow watercolors over the crayon drawings. SO simple an Magical every time!

I always enjoy this activity and my daughter does too!

Rainbow Coffee Filters

This is a simple activity to create beautiful rainbows for Spring. We always seem to drag out the coffee filters to draw or color on. I think I have a zillion posts about coffee filters so at the end of this post you can click on the links to see them.

Materials Needed

Coffee Filters

Water-based Markers

Newspaper

Spray Bottle with water

Make sure to lay down some newspaper on your work area. Then begin coloring and drawing rainbows on coffee filters.

After you have filled up your coffee filter with marker colors, then spray some water and make sure newspaper in underneath because the color will bleed through. Also, not to much water or the colors will completely disappear!

Ta da! Happy Rainbow Making...we may make a garland of these...

Liquid Watercolor Experiments

My daughter can never get enough of experimentation with liquid watercolors and different surfaces. It is neat to see the interaction of the liquid watercolors on all the different textures and how each material absorbs or not. If you don't have liquid watercolor, food coloring mixed with water can be substituted for this activity.

Materials Needed:

Liquid Watercolors mixed with water

Food Coloring mixed with water

eye droppers

newspaper

paper towels

tissues

napkins

coffee filters

baby wipes

To begin the experimentation, lay down newspaper to protect the table surface. Either water down food coloring or liquid watercolors and place in muffin tins or small containers. Use the eye droppers to drop color on to different surfaces such as: paper towels, tissues, napkins, coffee filters, baby wipes, newspaper, and more....

What Should We Make With All Our Experiments?

Dancing Candy Hearts Experiment

Do you have any left over candy hearts from Valentine's day? Well, I have just the experiment that you can do with candy hearts that my daughter has been going crazy about the past few days.

Materials Needed:

Candy Hearts

Clear jar

1 cup of water

2 Tablespoons of baking soda

about a 1/2 cup or more of vinegar

First, fill a small clear jar with about a cup of water. Then put 2 Tablespoons of baking soda and stir.

After that, put about 2 or 3 candy hearts in the mixture. They will just sit at the bottom of the jar at first.

Then add the vinegar and the hearts will begin to dance or rise and fall! C was really excited how they were dancing!

We stirred them around to help the hearts move about. Essentially the baking soda and vinegar are reacting to create carbon dioxide and bubbles and lifting the hearts up. In the end, the candy hearts just stayed at the top, but C had fun experimenting with adding more baking soda or vinegar to see if it they would dance or move more. This occupied her for a long time!

Does Your Child Keep a Sketchbook?

My daughter has had a sketchbook before, but I was excited to see some of her drawings that she recently did in her new book. I gave her no instruction so I was really impressed. She usually will draw things from her imagination, but she chose to draw things around the house. I wanted to share her wonderful drawings. Let me know what you think.

Here is her sketch of our Valentine Teapot that we have had forever and that she has always been enamored with. It was so cool to see that she sketched it.

Here is a sketch that C made of my husband's plastic heart gear that he ordered online. It was created by a 3-D printer which is something my husband has been obsessed with. Obviously my daughter finds it just as fascinating or she wouldn't have sketched it. The gears actually work on the heart too. SO fun!

Lastly, here is my daughter's sketch of The Snowy Day DVD cover. She has loved this book and movie since she could walk. It just happened to be out because she told me that the snow reminded her of Peter and the Snowy Day and she wanted to see the DVD and book. That book will always have a special place in our hearts here.

I can't wait to see what else my daughter will sketch in her new sketchbook!

Bubble Printed Valentine Hearts

My all time most popular post on the The Chocolate Muffin Tree is Bubble Printing and we revisited this technique just recently to create some Valentine Hearts. They turned out beautifully.

Materials Needed:
(Per color you need)
1/2 cup water
2 Tablespoons tempera paint
few squirts of dish soap
containers
straws
paper

We made Bubble Prints in this post here if you want to follow the tutorial with pictures. Basically you mix up the ingredients above in each container per each color. Then you blow into the mixture like you were blowing bubbles in milk (watch that little ones don't suck up the soapy mixture) and place a paper over the colored bubbles to create a print. The print is created as the bubbles pop. Each time you'll need to blow more bubbles to create more prints.

After you have a bunch of bubble printed papers, you can use them to create heart shapes. We used construction paper in Valentine colors to frame our hearts. You could make these hearts into Greeting Cards or even Heart Garland.

Sweet Little Heart Cookies

We've made this recipe the past few years from Family Fun Magazine as Santa Hats, but since we forgot to make them for Christmas I told my daughter we could make a heart version of these for a Valentine Heart Cookie. They are basically a Meringue Cookie made with egg whites and sugar. Here is how they turned out:

Ingredients Needed:
2 egg whites, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup sugar
Red colored sugar
parchment paper

First heat the oven to 200 degrees F. Then beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. After that, add the cream of tartar, vanilla extract, and 1/2 sugar. Continue to beat until peaks stiffen. Then we put the mixture into a gallon size plastic bag and cut a corner off the bag for a makeshift piping bag.

Then on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, pipe the hearts with the bag filled with the egg white mixture.

Next, fill the inside of the heart like this.

Here is C hard at work in the process.

Lastly, sprinkle the colored sugar on the hearts and cook for 1 hour and 20 minutes at 200 degrees F. Cook them until they are hard, but not browned. The recipe advised to turn off the oven and let the cookies sit for an hour before removing. ***We took them right out and they were fine.

My daughter loves these sweet cookies and we already need to make some more!

Wood Scrap Collage

This is a continuation of our Wood Scrap Sculpture post. We had so much fun making our sculptures so we decided to just paint flat wood scraps and practice mixing colors on each wooden shape. Each individual scrap turned out beautiful, but when you put them all together they made some amazing Wood Scrap Collages.

Materials Needed for Wood Scrap Collage:

Wood Scraps

Paint

paint brushes

Glue

Cardboard base

First gather some wood scraps. I've gotten wood scraps from craft stores, home stores, and the Wood Shop Teacher at the High School that I work at too.

Then we just started painting and mixing colors on the flat pieces of wood. This was a lot of fun and many of these could even stand on their own as beautiful miniature paintings.

Then we started arranging them in different ways to create collages.

Another way....overlapping.

This was a great activity....painting the scraps, arranging them, and just simply playing/building with them. You can glue them in the end or just leave them as is to arrange and rearrange. Hope we have inspired you to create some colorful scrap wood paintings or collages.

Wood Scrap Sculptures

Wood Scrap Sculptures are so much fun. I am lucky enough to have a Wood Shop Teacher in my High School so that I could make these with my High School Sculpture students and my daughter. You could probably get scrap wood donations from a lumberyard or Home Supply Store too. A great artist to correlate with this project is artist Louise Nevelson. She was a Wood Scrap Sculptor extraordinaire!

Materials Needed:

Wood Scraps
Wood base to build on
wood glue
brush to spread glue evenly
Tempera paint

This was the invitation to build and make a wood scrap sculpture.

Here is the artist at work. A brush and glue worked well for my daughter, but older kids would rather use the glue bottle. After building, let the sculpture dry.

Then you are ready to paint. C really got into this part...painting upside-down.

My High School Students loved this project too. Here are some of their sculptures. A lot of them chose spray paint to finish them off.

The Value of Creating Snowmen

We never tire of making snowmen. I think I have made snowmen with my daughter ever since she could walk. Not only is it a great excuse to get outside, but there is so much more value in this activity. I must think there is value or else we wouldn't make them every winter.

Snowmen are so fun to make. They teach kids a lot. Obviously they teach kids about building and creating but there is so much more. When waiting to create a snowman each year I explain to my daughter about why the snow has to be a certain temperature before it can pack together(32 degrees and above), so there is definitely Science involved in the process. When we start building there is a lot of problem solving going on such as: "How large each "snowball" should be?" and "Why the snow is falling apart....? and so on? Once the basic structures are built there are lots of decision making skills such as: "What will we make the eyes out of?" or "Who will the Snowmen look like?"

We had fun deciding to use pipe cleaners for mouths and pom poms for eyes/noses/buttons. We lost our snowman kit so we had to be more inventive. We tried using candies too, but they wouldn't stay in very well and they were too small.

We also found if we used a popsicle stick to create a hole that the pom poms would stay in place more securely.

We had so much fun using our imaginations to come up with ideas for their hair. We have always used hats in the past and the evergreen tree pieces and dead flowers made such a creative alternative. Snow Paint makes another great way to decorate a snowman too.

While making these snowmen my daughter commented on how these snowmen will make people smile
since our neighbors always enjoy seeing our creations. I think she remembered when we made a Snow Bunny and a neighbor put treats in the bunnies basket. So another value of creating snowmen could even be brightening someone's day. Once the snowmen begin to melt there will be a Science lesson on the temperature of when snow melts. The lessons are endless....Who would of thought?

Making GIANT Snowflakes

The other day we started making GIANT Snowflakes and it has been a HUGE hit with my daughter. These snowflakes have made wonderful window decorations that literally fill the sections of our windows. They make great holiday and Winter decorations to brighten up the drab days of Winter here in Ohio. Also, they would be a great way to bring some snow to warmer climates out there.

To make these GIANT Snowflakes you'll need:

Large White Gift Tissue

Scissors

The White Tissue Paper is great to use because you can fold this paper countless times cut easily through many layers. It is a little tricky to fold, but you could have the tissue pre-folded for your kids and show them how to cut shapes. My daughter mostly cut triangle shapes which is the easiest shape to cut.

Here are the steps. Basically you fold the square into a triangle and keep matching each corner to corner to create smaller triangles. Between steps 5 and 6 you want to round the top so the snowflake will be a circular shape. Then begin cutting shapes on each edge. My daughter mostly cut triangle shapes because that is the easiest shape to cut. You can definitely experiment with different shapes.

Have FUN! Children and adults get a lot of satisfaction from cutting snowflakes.

And it is always a surprise each time you open a folded snowflake. This activity could be a science experiment in which you predict what each snowflake might look like. It is a great lesson in symmetry too. Also, you could pair this activity with my Exploring Snowflakes...Up Close post and observe real snowflakes and learn about Wilson Bentley who took the first pictures of snowflakes. Look how big this snowflake is compared to my daughter....AWESOME!

Here is some of our window display from outside our house. They look wonderful! I'm sure it brightens everyone's day when they go by our house. I know it makes me smile each time I see them.

Glittery Magnolia Pods

When were on Thanksgiving Break in the South of the US we gathered some magnolia pods as we always do to add to our continuous nature collection. They are vey similar to Pine Cones, but have a large stem on them. I've seen many others put glitter on pine cones, so I thought why not put some glitz on Magnolia Pods and dress them up for the holidays? So that is what we did.

Here are the Magnolia Pods before glitter.

Paint some glue on the pods.

Then either sprinkle and shake the glitter on the pods...

Or place them in a small box and roll them around in the glitter for less mess.

You could fashion some ribbon onto your pods or pine cones.

Hang them as ornaments or garland.

Or just lay them out or place them in a decorative bowl for the holidays or anytime.

Painted Salt Dough Ornaments

We finally finished our Painted Salt Dough Ornaments today. Some of these beauties will be going on our Christmas tree and others will become some fantastic gifts to our family and friends. It was a long process, but well worth it. We made Salt Dough Heart Necklaces back in the Springtime for Mother's Day and they made fabulous gifts.

To make Salt Dough Ornaments you'll need:

(We doubled this recipe)

1 cup flour

1/4 cup salt

1/4 cup water

cookie cutters

acrylic paint

brushes

glitter

ribbon for hanging

Mix the flour and salt well and add water. Add more flour if too sticky or more water if too dry. Roll out on a flour surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create the shapes for your ornaments and then place the dough shapes on a foil lined cookie sheet. Use a straw form holes on the top of the ornament shapes. Bake between 275 F and 300 F for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

After the ornaments were done, we painted the dough shapes with solid colors of acrylic paint.

Then we added more detail with gold paint and other colors.

Lastly, we added some touches of glitter to add some sparkle which is always fun!

Next, we'll be adding some ribbon for hanging.

Contact Paper Ornaments

Want a quick way to make ornaments with your children? Well, make some Contact Paper Ornaments. They are so easy to make. My daughter loves to draw so this was a fun way to incorporate her drawings into some fun tree decorations.

For Contact Paper Ornaments you'll need :

-White paper or card stock

-markers or crayons

-contact paper

-hole puncher

-wire or pipe cleaners

First, start drawing lots of fun Holiday or Winter themed ideas onto white paper or card stock. We did this together. I started to draw, and then my six year old joined in. Lots of Christmas trees and candy canes.

Santa and reindeer.

Then after you have a bunch of drawings, cover each side of the drawing with contact paper.

Lastly, cut around the drawings, punch a hole, and then add wire or pipe cleaners for hanging. They are ready to hang or to be given as unique gifts that I know many people will truly LOVE!
