A boost controller is a device to control the boost level produced in the intake manifold of a turbo or supercharged engine by affecting the air pressure delivered to the pneumatic and mechanical wastegate. A boost controller can be a simple manual control which can be easily fabricated, or it may be included as part of the engine management computer in a factory turbocharged car, or an aftermarket electronic boost controller such as those made by HKS, APEXi, or GREDDY.

Since less positive pressure can be present at the wastegate actuator as desired boost is approached the wastegate remains closer to a completely closed state. This keeps exhaust gas routed through the turbine and increases energy transferred to the wheels of the turbocharger. Once desired boost is reached, closed loop based systems react by allowing more air pressure to reach the wastegate actuator to stop the further increase in air pressure so desired boost levels are maintained. This reduces turbocharger lag and lowers boost threshold. Boost pressure builds faster when the throttle is depressed quickly and allows boost pressure to build at lower engine RPM than without such a system.
This also allows the use of a much softer spring in the actuator. For instance, a 7 psi (0.48 bar) spring together with a boost controller may still be able to achieve a maximum boost level of well over 15 psi (1.0 bar). The electronic control unit can be programmed to control 7 psi (0.48 bar) psi at half throttle, 12 psi (0.83 bar) at 3/4 throttle, and 15 psi (1.0 bar) at full throttle, or whatever levels the programmer or designer of the control unit intends. This partial throttle control greatly increases driver control over the engine and vehicle.

Ferrari will be giving its 599XX its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week. The vehicle, which will be finished in a colour matching the F2008, is essentially a technological laboratory aimed at a select group of clients much like the FXX was, and will incorporate technological solutions being used for the first time and developed exclusively for the car.

The show will also premiere the Handling GT Evoluzione (HGTE) Package for the 599 GTB Fiorano, and items in the HGTE pack are stiffer springs, thicker anti-roll bars, a retuned exhaust system as well as new 20-inch wheels and a new front grille. The promise here is of course a sportier, more dynamic drive experience, and the vehicle on display at the show will feature a new three-layer metallic Rosso shade.

EFI fuel pressure regulators come in various shapes and sizes but all have the same purpose - to maintain a constant fuel pressure above the intake manifold pressure. The difference in pressure between the fuel rail and intake manifold or differential pressure across the injector should be maintained at a level to suit optimum injector operation.

The installation of an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator allows for the adjustment of fuel pressure to suit larger aftermarket injectors and other engine modifications. They are also necessary to regulate and flow increased volumes of fuel pumped by high flow aftermarket fuel pumps.

Fuel pressure regulator, which works with the fuel pump to maintain a steady pressure relationship between the fuel line side of the injectors and the intake manifold.

Most adjustable regulators are still one to one or close to that, however you can adjust the pressure at idle or full throttle for fine tuning. There is one other type of regulator that is used with aftermarket forced induction. These are rising rate regulators commonly called FMU's (fuel management unit). These regulators increase fuel pressure at a multiplication factor of boost. So instead of messing with complicated computers and injection duty cycles, these systems just increase fuel pressure to add fuel. They go inline down from the factory regulators and only start to add pressure under boost. So when you are off boost, you maintain factory tuning and drivability. Only as you get boost does the FMU begin to increase fuel pressure

Let's not keep you in suspense situation any longer. The envelope, please: Chevy's new two-door is...very, very good. At the risk of inducing insider trading, now would be a good time to sell any of your Mustang stock.

The 99% prototype is admittedly rough around the edges-awful paint, not all parts to production shape, some interior bits held in place with tape while engineers test final pieces -- but in terms of hardware it's a "nearly done" Camaro. With minor tweaks, this is the car you'll be able to get by March.

For this early drive, Chevy served up only the base, V-6 version of its new ponycar (V-8 drives will follow in about two months), but that quickly proved no disappointment. The headline news: The "base" engine is the same DOHC, 24-valve 3.6L V-6 that serves in the 2008 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the Cadillac CTS. Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors and can be configured to obtain different objectives, such as improved fuel economy, increased power, or additional auxiliary power for electronic devices and power tools.

Some of the advanced technologies typically used by hybrids include

Regenerative Braking. The electric motor applies resistance to the drivetrain causing the wheels to slow down. In return, the energy from the wheels turns the motor, which functions as a generator, converting energy normally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, which is stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor.

Electric Motor Drive/Assist. The electric motor provides additional power to assist the engine in accelerating, passing, or hill climbing. This allows a smaller, more efficient engine to be used. In some vehicles, the motor alone provides power for low-speed driving conditions where internal combustion engines are least efficient.

Automatic Start/Shutoff. Automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the accelerator is pressed. This prevents wasted energy from idling.

Audi hasn't transformed the R8 by adding a pair of cylinders. Not like Porsche transforms the 911 by adding a pair of turbos anyway. No, the R8 V10 is basically an R8 V8 that's faster, a little grippier, and better equipped.

Which means it's the perfect everyday-use supercar. A Gallardo (with which the Audi shares an engine) is too noisy to be more than a special-occasions car. And if ‘everyday' includes the British winter, well you won't want to be getting by on 2WD.

The 525bhp engine has an astonishing spread of power, pulling hard from low in the rev range and getting pregressively and implausibly stronger all the way to an 8,700rpm red-line.

And the magical, predictable, transparent handling of the V8 car isn't messed up by the extra power. This is a car that always seems to be on your side.

The launch price looks high, but at least it doesn't need any extras. The R Tronic and the carbon-ceramic brakes are both a waste of money unless you want to do track days. And actually this isn't a track-day car.

It's too civilised for that.

The mechanics of a turbocharger are closely related to the mechanics of a jet engine. If you were to modify the turbo so that the compressor outlet fed the turbine inlet you would be on your way to making a jet engine (junkyardjet.com). A turbo's relationship with a jet engine should give you some idea of the potential of turbochargers. A turbocharger harnesses the wasted energy of exhaust gases exiting the engine to spin a turbine that compresses the intake air charge.

Exhaust gases are directed into the turbocharger through the square inlet in the exhaust housing of the turbo (shown in the bottom left of the above picture). The exhaust flows through the exhaust housing spinning the exhaust turbine. After going through the exhaust housing, the gasses flow out through the exhaust housing outlet(middle left in the picture). The turbine is connected to the compressor wheel on the intake side of the turbo through the center bearing housing. The center housing will have ports for oil to flow in to and out of to lubricate and cool the shaft, and it may or may not have ports for water to go in to and out of. The above picture does not show ports for water. Fresh air is brought into the turbocharger through the air inlet (middle right in the picture). The air is compressed by he compressor and the now pressurized air flows out through the compressor housing. Note:The picture above shows a turbocharger with an internal wastegate.

Above we see the basic layout of the components of a turbocharger system. Exhaust gases leave the engine via a turbo manifold, this replaces the stock exhaust manifold or header. One thing missing from the above diagram is an external wastegate. The wastegate is used to control boost levels by allowing exhaust gasses to bypass the turbo, thereby decreasing the volume of exhaust available to spin the turbo's turbine. In a turbo Honda, the turbocharger is bolted directly to the manifold. After moving through the turbo, exhaust gasses exit the turbo through a downpipe which connects to the rest of the exhaust system. Fresh air ,after being compressed by the turbo, passes through some intake piping and into an intercooler ('aircooler' in the above diagram). An intercooler works exactly like a radiator except pressurized air passes through it instead of water. The intercooler is mounted on the front of the car so air flows through it as the car moves down the road. This cools the pressurized intake air charge. This is necessary because when air is pressurized it heats up. Another component missing in the above diagram is a blow off valve (BOV). The blow off valve vents pressurized air when the throttle plate is closed. This prevents a pressure surge from building up in the system and possibly damaging the compressor wheel and the turbo's bearings. Another component not shown is a pop off valve (POV). Often not used on turbo Hondas, a POV is a safety valve that opens, and stays open until manually closed, when a preset boost level is reached, venting most if not all pressurized air. This prevents an overboost situation that may occur if there is a wastegate or boost controller failure.

I've been having a long standing debate with myself: Which car would be more fun to play with? A relatively cheap to run, but hardly exclusive Japanese, or a sophisticated, complicated (albeit sometimes too complicated for its own good) and classy German. It's funny how this was also the case in World War II. The Panzer tanks used by the Nazis were very efficient killers with the latest technology but were extremely expensive to produce and maintain, whereas their simpler Japanese counterparts were much easier to run.

We don't see many tuned German cars on the road, especially here in Malaysia, as BMW's and Mercs are, well, way out of reach for many people. Japanese cars on the other hand are a dime a dozen. I must confess that my own ignorance has led me to believe that German cars just aren't tuneable, due to the simple fact that there just aren't as many tuned BMW's as there are Nissans, Hondas, Toyotas and Mazdas. Take into account that a typical BMW costs twice as much as its Japanese counterpart and the higher cost of tuning parts and higher running costs; it's quite easy to see why most people stand firmly on the Japanese side of the fence.

Costs of modifications aside, you'd be hard pressed to fault the result of a nicely done up Beemer. A fully done-up Evo or Skyline just doesn't have the same visual clout as a Beemer, especially Beemers like this Motorsport Division demo car. An Evo with a full Varis bodykit may look fierce and intimidating, but a fully done up BMW will have the same intimidation level as the Evo, but it does it with so much more class.

Think of a street thug with piercings and tattoos covering his arms, brandishing a rusty blood-stained parang, dressed in tight jeans and a leather jacket (the Evo), standing next to a clean shaven man dressed in a white suit, with greased hair combed all the way back, gold chains, toothpick in his mouth and a silver-plated Colt M1911A handgun with ivory grip inserts and intricate engravings along the length of the barrel, resting in his left hand (the Beemer). Yeah, now you get the idea don't you?

BMW are known for making some of the world's best automotive engines. The E46 M3 S54B32 3.2 litre engine won numerous awards for its smoothness, high power output and all round awesomeness. It's good to know that BMW has passed on some of the M3's engine DNA to its lesser siblings such as the 2-litre straight-six engine which resides in this pearl white E46. In stock form, the M52B20-T produces a barely adequate 150bhp. That's hardly enough to power to propel this 3-series BMW which weighs around 1500kg.

It's slightly innocent demeanor makes it impossible to imagine the performance potential. The S203 is gloriously tuned by STI for impeccable driving attributes, and that is never a bad thing.

The realm of high performance cars must be one of the most demanding of all, other that the more obvious reasons that is. For the manufacturers, their reliance on pleasing the enthusiast drivers means that in no way can a competitor have a product that is better than theirs. If someone comes out with another upgrade to bump its' horsepower just a mere 10 horses, you can bet your behind that the competitor will suddenly come out with something to better that. In some ways, their motorsport guys are a bit attention crazy.

But let's not make you presume that i am actually complaining. No, far from that. Had things been more innocent or uncompetitive, we'd probably still think that 200 hp is more than enough. And nothing personifies this war on performance vehicles more than the friendly rivalry between Subaru Imprezas and Mitsubishi Evolutions. Based on the motorsports where both shine the most, which is along forest trails, icy routes or even dusty roads all over the world in World Rally Championship races, they have enjoyed almost equal glory time at one point or another. Having said that, it is interesting to note that both camps have had a drop in performance these past couple of years and although the respective manufacturers have every right to be frustrated, at least their reputation is sealed thanks to the street credentials and history.

It comes to no surprise that both models are a struggle between which has more power and superior handling. Newer better versions are at worst just a year apart between the two. As for myself, i am still undecided on which do i like most. Though the Mitsu is better when it comes to aftermaket upgrade availability (and relatively cheap), the Scooby's boxer engine is addictive. Apart from that, the former is just too common while the latter is only still coming up. Which brings us to the Impreza here.

Being Hypertune, this is of course no ordinary Impreza. It's loaded with Subaru Technica International's products. And for most of us, if it's rich with STI parts like this one here, it means that the car is part of the S series. True, the S203 is a wildcat that needs little introduction. It is ironic though that information on the web is contradicting based on the sources as if indicating that this is one monster that's better to be driven rather than concentrating too much on the technicalities. For comparison purposes, Mitsubishi's equivalent to the S Series would probably be their FQs or to some extent their RS version.

The Toyota Corolla Matrix, commonly referred to as the Toyota Matrix, is a compact hatchback manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada and sold in North America.

The Matrix is the Toyota version of a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors; the GM version is the Pontiac Vibe, made at NUMMI in Fremont, California. A third version, also assembled at NUMMI, was sold in Japan from 2002 to early 2004 as the Toyota Voltz. Although the Voltz was sold under the Toyota brand there, the styling was nearly identical to the Vibe. The Matrix is considered to be the sporty hatchback/wagon counterpart of the Corolla.

The Matrix and the Vibe are identical mechanically and practically identical internally, but they are clothed in different sheetmetal in order to appear somewhat different. Both vehicles are narrow but tall station wagons styled in a trendy, quasi-SUV fashion (called a crossover utility vehicle or "XUV" by Toyota) and marketed to a fairly youthful market segment. This type of car is often referred to as a sport wagon.
