Annihilation by Wilco [REVIEW]

My favorite album by Wilco is by far A Ghost is Born.

I put it in more than one personal top 10 albums of the 2000s.

It was also the first album I have ever listened by Wilco.

This to say that I couldn't be more pleased to find out that Hot Sun Cool Shroud, the new EP by Jeff Tweedy and company, reminds a lot of their 2004 album.

And of all the 6 songs of the mini-album, for a total of 17 minutes and 36 seconds, "Annihilation" is probably the closest to the sound of A Ghost is Born.

It's probably the post-punk guitars, popping up here and there in the album.

It could be the summertime-after-dark feeling reminiscing of Tweedy's rehab and panic attacks.

It might be because of the lyrics picturing a moment that we know won't last:

Life It's nothing but shadows I looked for you, far and wide Let's kiss before Just before Goodbye.

It might well be because of the instrumental "Livid" and "Inside the Bell Bones", recalling some of the original instrumental hooks.

Or maybe it's just that it's been 20 years since the band from Chicago released the album.

Recommended for all those who loved A Ghost, and those who never heard of Wilco and want to give them a chance.

You Never Know by Iron & Wine [REVIEW]

"You Never Know" is the lead single from Sam Beam aka Iron & Wine's new album Light Verse.

The record is the first solo album released since 2017 Beast Epic.

During these years, Beam released other material too, including a collaboration with Calexico, Years to Burn, in 2019.

In "You Never Know", there is definitely some leftovers from this recent collaboration.

The song is a sort of signpost for the mood of the album:

A delicate tiptoe through a baroque backwoods where ’90s lo-fi meets singer-songwriter melancholy. It’s hushed, a little bleak, and ultimately uplifting – all of Iron & Wine’s charms encapsulated in four-and-a-half hazy minutes (source: hotpress.com).

Sam Beam's vocals exquisitely flourish on a bed of elaborate arrangements for a 24-person string section, written by violinist and composer Paul Cartwright.

The contribution of Cartwright, along with his chamber music accompaniments, probably marks the most significant difference with Iron & Wine's past works:

This is clear from opening tune “You Never Know,” which begins very much in wizened Beast Epic mode before the song becomes subsumed by strings that lend an air of Beatles-esque disquiet as Beam’s layered vocals chant the song’s title (source: nodepression.com).

This leads to more airy, lush, and breezy songs than before.

Finally, "You Never Know" is a song that will appeal both first-time Iron & Wine listeners as well as hardcore fans who have followed the band since 2002.

To Get It Right by Phosphorescent [REVIEW]

"To Get It Right is Hard to Do" sings Matthew Houck aka Phosphorescent in "To Get It Right", the closing song from his latest album Revelator.

It's certainly hard to keep writing beautiful songs after “Mermaid Parade,” “C’est La Vie No. 2,” and, most notably, “Song For Zula".

However, the message from the song "directly references the lyrics of “Revelator,” and kind of reckons with them" (source: ashevillestages.com).

It's a nearly-seven minutes of "pianos, drums and synths crescendo" (source: pastemagazine.com) about a battered, but not-yet broken soul.

It's introspective melancholy at its best, with a modicum of hope:

Starting like a mist in the wind, over the course of its seven minutes run time it soaks you through. As the bass picks up the heavy lifting in the second half, we are reminded that life is not plain sailing for anyone, it is a fight to the end (source: secretmeeting.co.uk).

Revelator is certainly an album worth listening to, and "To Get It Right" is its finest moment.

Am I the only one of thinks of Tarantino's Pulp Fiction when listening to "Read'em and Weep" by The Black Keys?

The song is taken from their latest and twelfth album, Ohio Players, which bears in the title a clear reference to the band's hometown, Akron, Ohio.

The album is the result of a collaboration between band mates Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney with various friends and colleagues, like Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, Beck, Noel Gallagher, Greg Kurstin, and others.

This resulted in a diverse kaleidoscope of sounds, which is evident in "Read'em and Weep".

The song kicks off with some western vibes sprouting for nearly a minute.

That quickly and seamlessly blends into "surf-rock vibes, which features a solo that’s an obvious Dick Dale reference (source: clevelandmagazine.com)".

If you are looking for meaty guitar riffs, reminding a bit of "El Camino", then this is the song for you.

King of Sweden by Future Islands [REVIEW]

Future Islands' "King of Sweden" came together "in ten minutes in the studio while [Samuel T.] Herring was plugged in over Zoom from Sweden, singing eerily in-time without any lag (source: loudandquite.com)".

The track, the opener from their new album "People Who Aren't There Anymore", was first unveiled on February 15th, 2022 on Colbert.

You have to watch the video to fully appreciate the energetic performance by Herring, who starts the song hooded in a duffle coat. He then takes it off, along with the top of the suit he is wearing.

Herring’s performance seemed so impassioned and unaffected – in a world of carefully posed cool, here was someone on stage who gave the impression they had no filter, Instagram or otherwise, who seemed to be dancing like no one was watching, beating his chest so hard you could hear it over the music and reaching imploringly towards the audience as he sang (source: theguardian.com).

The live song is pure Future Islands / Herring engaging dance moves. I am very happy I managed to see them live when they came to Dublin in 2012.

The big question the band from North Carolina asks, in general but mostly to themselves, is: "are you still capable of making interesting music at 40?"

The general theme of the album is about people falling out of your life as you get older.

A little bit more than half of the album was written while Herring was still in a relationship. The second part of the record happened while he was going through a divorce.

At the time of writing the song, Herring was in the happy stage of his relationship with Swedish actress Julia Ragnarsson, hence the reference to the "King of Sweden" in the title.

Although set in New York, ‘King Of Sweden’ refers to Herring’s time spent living in Sweden, trapped in a broken relationship which he is determined to fix (source: loudandquite.com).

"King of Sweden" is Future Islands at their best, with its mix of self-reflecting lyrics and psychedelic, woozy synthesizer pop sounds.

In the song (as well as in real life), Herring is so lovestruck that he goes back to his teenage years: (“feeling like I’m 15/ wandering with the Misfits”), accompanied by the "insistent keyboard riff from [William] Cashion (source: live4ever.uk.com)."

You WILL love the song, if you've also liked past trademark songs by the band like "Seasons (Waiting on You)" or "Light House".

James Vincent McMorrow LIVE @ Windmill Lane QTR (Dublin, 13/06/2024)

For my first gig of the year (yes), I arrive way too early.

The free ticket, courtesy of Hot Press, says 6:30 pm sharp, but I forgot about the time gig starts in Ireland.

It's been way too long since my last gig!

Music doesn't start before 7:30 pm.

I was way too early and for what matters I decided not to even have a drink because I am still on a diet.

The Support Act: Niamh Regan

The support act, the lovely and funny Niamh Regan from Galway, plays a handful of songs, roughly 30 minutes of acoustic guitar and fingerpicking.

Her voice reminded me of Sharon Van Etten.

She won the RTE Folk Music Award and her album Come As You Are was released only two weeks ago.

The Main Act: James Vincent McMorrow

James Vincent McMorrow doesn't start before 8:30 pm.

He's wearing a checked shirt, some loose, wrinkled jeans and a beanie hat (I must get me one of these before the next gig).

His beard is as I remembered: wavy, forcefully-combed, showing the attempt of an effort.

James is by himself. It's a free gig after all!

There is only one acoustic guitar on stage, which is great because this is the type of performance I like.

He is in a very good mood and starts playing right away.

He would then do some sharing in between songs about his recent struggle with being an artist, writing shitty music, being honest, initially rejecting the offer for one of his songs to be in the Game of Thrones OST because he was at the cinema with a friend, etc.

To my surprise, he plays a lot of songs from his first album, Early in the Morning, which is the one I know best.

I also bought an actual CD of the album back then.

I didn't keep track (no pun intended) of the setlist but this is what I recall him playing (the order might not be 100% accurate):

In fairness, I didn't know very well the handful of songs that he played from his new album, "Wide Open, Horses".

His voice is exactly how I remembered it from the first time I saw him at the Academy in 2010, playing support for Rain Machine: raucous, sometimes rough and then, when you least expect it, it jumps to unbelievably-high pitch notes.

The highlight of the night was certainly when he unplugged his guitar and stepped away from the microphone to sing a stripped-down version of And If My Heart Should Somehow Stop.

The next day James will be at the Barbican in London to officially launch his new album. It was good to see him again live and remember 2010.

Slowdive Star Roving

Slowdive Star Roving is a new song by Slowdive in over 22 years. It follows some sort of revival for shoegaze with bands such as My Bloody Valentine (2015), Ride and Jesus and Mary Chain (2016) releasing albums or songs or announcing tours.

Slowdive Star Roving picks up where they left off in 1995 with their latest Pygmalion but I still consider Souvlaki as one of the best shoegaze albums ever (and my favourite one).

To my ears, their sound is now closer to The Pain of Being Pure at Heart or the M83 of Saturdays = Youth.

They sound more pop, if you like, without any negative connotation. Their lyrics still remain faithful to a certain degree of mystery. They can make you think about your first love or your current one as well as something completely different.

For what it's worth, Slowdive Star Roving topped Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart, which is definitely a sign there is still a solid fan base waiting for the "bunch of new tracks" they have been working on.

Wilco, I Might

Wilco's first single "I Might" since Wilco the Album will be available at Solid Sound Festival this weekend on limited edition vinyl. People who cannot make it all the way to Massachusetts can wait until July 19th, the date of the official release (while you can pre-order it here and there, for example at Rough Trade or Anti). "I Might" is also Wilco's first release under own label dBpm Records as well as first single of forthcoming album Get Well Soon Everybody or The Whole Love. At a first listen the songs shows a bit of the pop irreverence fans could find in their last album. If you really cannot wait until mid-July, have a listen to "I Might" and its b-side "I Love My Label" (sic), a cover by a song by Nick Lowe. You can find both song and cover here.

Belle and Sebastian LIVE @ Grand Canal Theatre, Dublin

Just like Dublin is split into two parts by the river Liffey, the working class North Side and the middle class South Side, so it was Grand Canal Theatre for the Belle and Sebastian concert. The band, touring Ireland and UK after their last appearance four years ago, well reflected the mood of both audience and city with a mix of songs from both their Jeepster and Rough Trade era. I was quite surprised to see the grat majority of the crowd singing-along and clapping hands at Stuart Murdoch's & C.'s most recent tunes, leaving me and a few long-time fans only to move our heads to gems like 'Fox in the Snow'. The change in their audience from intimate (=unknown) clubs to posh theatres it's well represented by the change in their music from Dear Catastrophe Waitress on. New songs like 'I want the world to stop' or less recent ones like 'I'm a CUckoo', they work best with big venues, great sound systems, and fancy light effects. Very few of the presents were at the gig for listening to 'Lord Anthony' or the 2004 b-side 'Travellin' Lights'. I now (maybe!) understand why Isobel Campbell decided to leave the band at some stage. The pity is they have great songs such 'The boy with the arab strap' and 'Sleep the clock around', which are well capable of pleasing both audiences. The girl sitting next to me, who danced all night long to their most recent songs, made tried start a conversation at the end of the concert. 'It was a great gig - she said. Yes, it was very nice - I replied, before joining to queue to the exit.

The Universe is Laughing by the Guggenheim Grotto

A band accidentally found on the web on one of those blogs where you can "try" music before the download. A name for a band, the Guggenheim Grotto, chosen because it sounded very "unusual". A band based in Dublin I had never heard of before and I decided to check their myspace for an upcoming gig just to find out they are currently touring the States. In brief, they released their new album The Universe is Laughing worldwide on June 15th under UFO Music. "The Universe is Laughing" is also the first single from their seventh release available for free downloading on the band's website and Amazon. Lead singer Kevin May describes their music as "indie folk with a poppy sound". Noah and the Whale and the Antlers' fans will be pleased with this track. As far as me, I love it. Ah, almost forgot: someone accidentally updated his blog after over a year.

Dalla top ten rimangono fuori album che oggettivamente meriterebbero di starci, primo fra tutti Kid A dei Radiohead, ma anche gli Animal Collective e gli Spoon di Kill the Moonlight, senza contare i Wilco di Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. E' una scelta puramente soggettiva: non sono mai stato un fan dei Radiohead, pur riconoscendone il valore artistico che hanno apportato alla musica. Allo stesso tempo, non sono mai riuscito pienamente ad apprezzare le altre due band citate, troppo sperimentale per i miei gusti la prima, priva di slanci emotivi la seconda. Per quanto riguarda i Wilco, infine, ho già spiegato la mia preferenza per A Ghost is Born. Da citare anche Yo La Tengo e TV On the Radio.

Non ce l'hanno fatta invece per pochissimo album che comunque rappresentano per me degli ottimi contributi, primo fra tutti Drums & Guns dei Low, ma anche Sea Change di Beck, WWI dei White Whale, Neon Bible degli Arcade Fire, Lesser Matters dei Radio Dept, i Sigur Ros e gli ultimi due album dei the National.

10. Wilco, A Ghost Is Born

Tra i fan dei Wilco ci sono pochi dubbi sul fatto che Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sia il capolavoro della band. Io gli preferisco A Ghost is Born. Sebbene non ci sia molto di nuovo rispetto al predecessore, A Ghost is Born si giova di una maggiore omogeneità e coesione tra i pezzi, che lo fanno diventare una specie di concept album. E', inoltre, almeno fino ad oggi, l'ultimo ed allo stesso tempo il più "elettrico" tra gli album della band americana. Almeno questo è quello che si dice.

9. Sunset Rubdown, Shut Up I'm Dreaming

Il progetto che più mi convince tra quelli di Spencer Krug. I Sunset Rubdown devono ovviamente molto agli Wolf Parade, ma non si fermano a semplici embrioni. Tre -a volte quattro- percussioni usate contemporaneamente per ogni brano; musicisti che si scambiano gli strumenti tra una canzone e l'altra; liriche ispirate ed allo stesso tempo irriverenti. Se qualcuno dice "che disco!", qualcun altro dice "OK".

8. Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs

Di tutti gli album del cantautore di Chicago, The Mysterious Production of Eggs è il primo che ho ascoltato e quello che preferisco. Il pop visto con occhiali tridimensionali e colorati, tra colonne sonore in stile spaghetti western, archi e citazioni in greco e latino.

7. Fleet Foxes, S/T

Album recuperato a posteriori -quello dei Fleet Foxes, a nuovo anno (2009) già inoltrato. Il primo ascolto non aveva rivelato nulla di sorprendente. E' infatti nella semplicità che va ricercato quel che di straordinario ha questo album. Una semplicità di suoni che è scelta stilistica mirante a sottrarre piuttosto che ad ingrossare. Ogni canzone diventa così un inno che risuona in qualche canyon laggiù, da qualche parte.

6. M83, Saturdays = Youth

Ci sono dei dischi che fanno da colonna sonora alle nostre vite, sia nei momenti felici che in quelli meno belli. Questo rappresenta al meglio uno dei primi e, per ovvi motivi che qui non sto a raccontare, mi è impossibile ri-ascoltarlo -almeno per il momento. Le canzoni si appiccicano letteralmente alle pareti della stanza, rivestandole di calore e nostalgia. Tecnicamente Dead Cities, Red Seas... è meglio, ma Saturdays = Youth è semplicemente un disco perfetto, che racchiude nel titolo un universo di sentimenti e sensazioni.

5. Bon Iver, For Emma, Forever Ago

Di cantautori che hanno riversato con successo i loro tormenti amorosi in un album ce ne sono tanti, ma a me ne vengono in mente due: uno è Beck, l'altro è Justin Vernon, in arte Bon Iver. Quest'ultimo ha fatto anche di più, rinchiudendosi per mesi in un cottage nel Wisconsin. Il risultato sono brani che arrivano direttamente dal cuore e parlano di tutto senza nominare niente. La sublimazione di una perdita in chiave folk.

4. Islands, Return to the Sea

Giocosità pop a livelli raramente sperimentati, senza per questo perdere in immediatezza. Questo è Return to the Sea degli Islands. La band si scioglie dopo aver scritto il suo capolavoro, salvo riformarsi una manciata di anni dopo. Canzoni coinvolgenti come poche, senza mai prendersi sul serio.

3. Antony & the Johnsons, I Am a Bird Now

Nel mondo della musica, ci sono tante richieste di aiuto custodite in una manciata di brani. Quella di Antony è una delle più delicate ed allo stesso tempo strazianti. Inclassificabile, come inclassificabile è la sua voce e la sua vita, sospesa a metà tra splendore e polvere.

2. Sufjan Stevens, Illinois

Se si volesse applicare il concetto di letteratura alla musica, sicuramente Illinois sarebbe tra i suoi capolavori. I personaggi del disco, ognuno dotato di vita propria, ben rappresentano una parte spesso nascosta di noi stessi. Si muovono attraverso brani-racconti accompagnati dalla chitarra di Sufjan e da arrangiamenti sempre in tema con gli umori degli stessi. In breve, un kolossal in tempi di film a basso costo.

1. Arcade Fire, Funeral

Una riflessione sulla morte che parte dai ricordi racchiusi in una camera da letto: gli Arcade Fire tracciano un solco indie-rock che molte band proveranno a ripetere, senza mai riuscirci. Funeral è un viaggio a ritroso nel tempo, dove ogni brano è allo stesso tempo flashback ed istantanea di uno stato esistenziale presente. E' un album unico, difficile da realizzare o pianificare a priori, difficilissimo se non impossibile da ripetere.

I Worked On the Ships by Ballboy

Ok, un blog è sicuramente uno spazio personale, dove parlare di cose più o meno personali. Un blog musicale però dovrebbe avere un minimo di obiettività e cercare -almeno in parte- di soddisfare le aspettative dei visitatori. Il fatto è che questo blog, musicalmente parlando, sta diventando un po' troppo personale e decisamente sempre meno obiettivo. Lo testimonia il post precedente, ma soprattutto la segnalazione che sto per farvi. Si tratta, infatti, di una delle mie band preferite, seconda nella mia classifica personal-mentale, solo ai Belle and Sebastian pre-Rough Trade (quelli che pubblicavano per la Jeepster, per intenderci). Sto parlando del nuovo album di Ballboy, band scozzese come quella appena citata, che fa capo a tale Gordon McIntyre. I Worked On the Ships è il quinto album per questo gruppo di Edinburgo che l'amato John Peel volle per ben cinque volte ospite alle sue session. Non c'è molta novità in questo disco rispetto agli album passati, a parte il passaggio alla Pony Proof Records. C'è forse una leggera tendenza all'acustico, come in The Sash My Father Wore and Other Stories (SL Records, 2003), ma rimangono le canzoni dai titoli lunghissimi, il richiamo agli Smiths e, soprattutto, quella che è stato definita "poesia in grado di far pensare", che si può tradurre semplicemente nella capacità della musica di trasportare l'ascoltatore non solo in luoghi più o meno lontani (la Scozia), ma in altre situazioni esistenziali. E scusate se è poco. Ok, allora: vi lascio una chicca, ma a patto che compriate l'album...

Ancora me lo ricordo: sono stato probabilmente l'unico a mettere i Ten Thousand Bees tra i primi -migliori- dieci album del 2007. Che ci volete fare, a volte l'italianità chiama e, quando lo fa, bisogna rispondere. Per questo post, dunque, non valgono le abituali considerazioni statistiche sul numero di visite e sull'importanza dell'argomento trattato. E poi quelli della Knifeville, label di Maniago (Pordenone, Friuli Venezia Giulia) che si occupa di promuovere esclusivamente la musica del proprio territorio, mi sono sempre andati a genio. Ecco, allora, che non potevo mancare di segnalarvi l'album d'esordio di Arnoux, progetto solista di Fabio Arnosti che -guarda caso- è il bassista delle "diecimila api". Cascades, questo il titolo del disco, è composto da otto brani che richiamano l'indietronica del già citato gruppo, rielaborandola però in un contesto più "liquido" (acquatico, se si guarda la copertina), dai ritmi ancora più lenti e dilatati. Da notare che il prezzo è 10 Euro (spese postali incluse) e che il package comprende una serie di foto di Lara Trevisan. Per darvi una ulteriore spinta all'acquisto, vi lascio queste due tracce in free download. A questo punto però, non potete lasciatevelo scappare!

Golden Age by TV On the Radio

I TV On the Radio non sono una band che amo particolarmente. Il fatto che non si sappia praticamente nulla del loro nuovo album, la cui uscita è prevista per il 22 Settembre per Interscope (USA) e 4AD (Resto del Mondo), non me li rende più simpatici. Tra le poche cose che si sanno c'è il titolo, Dear Science, che -la band si è affrettata a precisare- è da intendersi con una "virgola" finale. A parte questa segnalazione, vi farà piacere essere messi al corrente che il primo singolo, "Golden Age" è già disponibile e può essere ascoltato in streaming, così come "Dancing Choose", sul myspace della band. Comunque, al di là di ciò, la ragione per cui i TV On The Radio non sono uno dei miei gruppi preferiti è squisitamente musicale (la professionalità prima di tutto). Però questa cosa della scienza non la mando proprio giù! Qualcuno ha scritto che il loro quarto album sarà "una lettera aperta sulla comprensione umana e sui limiti dell'insopportabile razionalismo". Ma fatemi il piacere! Forse è meglio che vi ascoltiate questa "Golden Age", va' (da intendersi con l'apostrofo -mi raccomando).

Belles by The Gutter Twins

Evidentemente, Mark Lanegan e Greg Dulli, aka The Gutter Twins, ci hanno preso gusto. Non sono passati, infatti, nemmeno sei mesi dall'uscita di Saturnalia (Sub Pop, 2008), ed ecco che i due ci riportano dritti dritti nelle atmosfere gotiche del loro album "d'esordio". Adorata, questo il titolo del nuovo lavoro, è un EP contenente 8 brani, che può essere scaricato esclusivamente in forma digitale da iTunes. Si tratta principalmente di cover, pescate dal repertorio di artisti affini musicalmente al duo, come Primal Scream, Vetiver, Jose Gonzalez e Scott Walker. La canzone che vi propongo, "Belles", oltre che la title-track, è invece l'unica traccia inedita di questo Adorata EP. Non ci resta, dunque, che ascoltarla e tingere il nostro autunno (?) con i colori oscuri del blues rock.

I Can't Believe It's Not Better by The Remote Viewer

Proprio ieri un mio amico che non vedo da tanto tempo mi ha chiesto se questo blog si occupava di musica elettronica. Casualmente, era da qualche giorno che avevo un album di questo genere nel cassetto. Anzi, per la precisione si tratta di un doppio Mini-CD 3", in edizione limitata -350 copie, ognuna singolarmente numerata e impacchettata; e il genere rientra più o meno nella definizioni di ambient, minimal, downtempo. Sto parlando di I Can't Believe It's Not Better, ultima fatica di Andrew Johnson e Nicola Hodgkinson, aka The Remote Viewer, da poco uscita per Mobeer. Non sono mai stato un fan di questo tipo di musica, quindi ammetto di essere stato attirato soprattutto dalla copertina dell'album, dal titolo sconsolante (che, in verità, faceva più pensare ad una sorta di shoegaze stile Galaxie 500) e dal fatto che nessuno dei dieci brani presenti avesse un titolo. Non si tratta di un disco di difficile ascolto. Non è cervellotico o roba del genere. E' molto vicino alle atmosfere di Milosh; ed si presta decisamente all'ascolto in contesti metropolitani grigi e piovosi. Purtroppo, non ho trovato niente su internet da farvi ascoltare; e neppure un link da segnalarvi. Per una volta però, può andare bene così: sulla fiducia.

Sad Robot by Stars

Ok, Pitchfork mi ha preceduto per quanto riguarda l'ultimo EP dei Clientele (il link non lo metto per ovvia invidia...), ma per quanto riguarda il nuovo degli Stars, Sad Robots EP, non vedo nessuna nuvola all'orizzonte. Fatemi, dunque, cominciare dicendo che il download digitale del disco sarà disponibile soltanto dall'apposito sito ufficiale, mentre le copie classiche, in edizione limitata, potranno essere acquistate esclusivamente durante le date del tour. Ma ne ho già abbastanza di marketing musicale più o meno creativo e quindi passo subito alle canzoni. Si tratta di cinque inediti e di una versione live di "Going, Going, Gone", brano contenuto in Nightsongs (Le Grand Magistery, 2001), tra l'altro in free download previa creazione di un account. Per quanto riguarda il gruppo, li ho amati in Set Yourself on Fire (Arts & Crafts, 2004), mentre non sono riuscito ad apprezzare pienamente il successivo In Our Bedroom After the War (2007). Qui, almeno dai primi ascolti, la band canadese sembra non accontentarsi di rimanere nel solco dell'indie pop. Non posso che apprezzare, dunque, le atmosfere dimesse, i toni di sconfitta, annunciata dalla voce dream-pop di Torquil Campbell, accompagnata ora da singole e ripetute note di pianoforte, ora da un uso dilatato dell'elettronica. Potete farvi un'idea di quello che scrivo, ascoltando la track conclusiva dell'EP, "Sad Robot".

The Only Man in Town by Moose

E' bello esagerare, a volte. In barba a tutte le leggi, di mercato e non. E' bello lasciarsi trasportare dal cuore, a volte. A volte, bisogna agire senza pensare. Senza fare calcoli. Vengo al punto. Una band che non c'è più, i Moose, e il cui genere, agli esordi, venne subito etichettato come shoegaze, ossia come "la scena che celebra se stessa" -secondo una famosa definizione di Steve Sutherland di Melody Maker. Un frontman, Russell Yates, che leggeva i testi sdraiato sul pavimento. Un'etichetta, la Hut Records, che molla il gruppo dopo il successo (di critica) ed il fallimento (di vendite) del terzo EP. Un'altra, la Play It Again Sam (PIAS), che ci investe giusto qualche dollaro. In mezzo, il tentativo di autoprodursi attraverso la Cool Badge. Su un sito ho letto una definizione per questa band: "Pop perfetto ignorato da criminali". Infine, nel 1995, la svolta: la band londinese abbandona le influenze di My Bloody Valentine & C. e vira decisamente verso il pop-rock. Qualcuno in cerca di influenze ha tirato in ballo anche il classic rock dei Byrds. Personalmente, li vedo molto più vicini al vecchio pop d'oltremanica degli Smiths e, più recentemente, dello scozzese Ballboy. Se, dunque, a metà Anni Novanta ascoltavate solo Oasis e Blur, forse vi siete persi qualcosa. Vo offro, dunque, l'occasione per redimervi con questa "The Only Man in Town", tratta da HighBall Me! (Nickel & Dimes, 2000), purtroppo l'ultimo album della band. Inoltre, se vi va di approfondire, oltre che cercarli su Wikipedia, vi consiglio di visitare il loro sito non-ufficiale ed il myspace di un fan.

Some Are Lakes by Land of Talk

Mettiamola così: sono da poco finite le Olimpiadi e la gente è tornata al lavoro. L'estate caldissima di quest'anno continua. Fra poco i più giovani se ne torneranno dritti sui banchi di scuola o nelle aule universitarie. Bene, non me ne può fregare di meno. Questo era soltanto per occupare qualche riga di testo. Quello che voglio veramente dire è che le ultime uscite targate Saddle Creek non sono state, per il sottoscritto, fonte di stupore e meraviglia. A ci aggiungo pure che, tra i migliori tre album dell'anno scorso, a dispetto di qualche classifica che ho pubblicato altrove, c'è sicuramente quello di Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver. Il nonsense però finisce qui, perchè c'è un delicato filo conduttore che lega queste ultime cose che ho detto. Questo filo risponde al nome di Land of Talk, ossia il progetto musicale della cantautrice Elizabeth Powell e del bassista Chris McCarron. Per il loro primo album, Some Are Lakes, in uscita appunto per Saddle Creek, la band si è fatta aiutare da Andrew Barr dei The Slip e, soprattutto, dal già citato Justin Vernon. Quello che ne è venuto fuori sono dieci canzoni tra "il senso per lo storytelling della Powell e la freschezza di Bon Iver". Se vogliamo rimanere in tema di definizioni approssimative, lo definirei una sorta di electric-folk. A me la title track è piaciuta molto. Che ne dite?

Nuove uscite My Honey a Settembre

Che il 1 Settembre, storicamente, non sia una data molto popolare, soprattutto dagli studenti, è cosa risaputa. E quelli della My Honey lo sanno molto bene, tanto che hanno deciso di addolcire la pillola con un po' del loro miele e, nello specifico, rilasciare ben due nuove uscite. La prima riguarda i Jordan, un trio post-punk davvero esplosivo, che pubblica il suo primo album, Oh No! We Are Dominos! in coproduzione con l'etichetta francese Motoneige e, appunto, la bresciana My Honey. Il disco viene annunciato come qualcosa di "esplosivo". Un motivo in più, dunque, per andarli a vedere dal vivo, durante il loro tour italiano, dal 11 al 16 Novembre. La seconda uscita è, invece, un EP del duo Mange-Tout. Teatime with Mr. Who, questo il titolo, è un concentrato di canzoni folk-pop, nate dalla penna e dalla voce della genovese Germana e della francese Nathalie (Le Havre). La coproduzione è questa volta con Marsiglia Records (Genova). Quelli della My Honey, però, si sono messi in testa di allietare alla grande il nostro ritorno dalle vacanze: non bastassero queste due uscite, ci sono i saldi a farci contenti! Tutti coloro, infatti, che acquisteranno almeno due dischi dal catalogo, ne riceveranno uno in omaggio tra Mixtapes & Cellmates - St, AAVV - Let it Bee, Mutt Ramon - Lasten musiikki, Soda Fountain Rag - I love you, Detektivbyrån & Hemstad - split 7. Cosa dire, dunque, se non: Chapeau!

White Snow by Ben Weaver

Fondamentalmente, dentro di me ne sono sempre stato convinto: per quanto riguarda la musica che a me piace, il Minnesota è il luogo per eccellenza, forse non a caso confinante con quella floridissima ed altrettanto diversificata scena canadese. Se poi si parla di pop-rock, le Twin Cities ne rappresentano, forse più di ogni altro luogo, la capitale. L'occasione per ribadirlo è il sesto album per Ben Weaver, "il più interessante cantautore che si possa incontrare" secondo lo scrittore Larry Brown. The Ax in the Oak, questo il titolo del disco in uscita per Bloodshot Records /Glitterhouse, vede ancora la produzione di Brian Deck (Iron & Wine, Modest Mouse), dopo la fruttuosa collaborazione per il precedente Paper Sky (Fugawee Bird Records, 2007). L'approccio questa volta è appena più sperimentale, con alcune leggere incursioni nell'elettronica. Ma il songwriting e le atmosfere sono comunque quelle tipiche dell'artista americano, sospese a metà tra malinconia e oscurità da un lato e speranza e romanticismo dall'altro. C'è qualcosa di Casiotone For The Painfully Alone in questo disco, ma anche una reminiscenza dei vecchi Semisonic; e, per inciso, non manca neppure qualche ascolto di Bright Eyes. Non è un disco che passerà alla storia, ma si tratta comunque di un lavoro da tenere in considerazione. Che ne dite di questa "White Snow"?

Per tutti quelli che pensano che la musica live, al di fuori dell'immaginario triangolo Milano-Bologna-Roma, non sia degna di attenzione, beccatevi questa tre-giorni di musica "INDIEPUNKPOSTCOREMATHPOPROCK". Minotaur Shock valuta i brani di Amateur Dramatics

I Radiohead, come in altre occasioni, hanno aperto la strada, lasciando agli acquirenti la possibilità di pagare il loro ultimo disco, In Rainbows, la somma che ritenevano giusta. Poi sono venuti Prince, che ha fatto uscire un suo lavoro insieme ad un quotidiano; Nine Inch Nails, che regalava i suoi dischi ai concerti; ora è il turno di Minotaur Shock, aka David Edwards. La ricetta è simile, ma con qualche ingrediente diverso: questa volta, infatti, è stato l'artista a dare una valutazione economica ai brani del suo ultimo disco, Amateur Dramatics (4AD), tenendo in considerazione la difficoltà tecnica del brano, i musicisti che l'hanno di volta in volta accompagnato, i "crash del computer", ecc. Andando sul sito ufficiale, infatti, si possono trovare canzoni che vanno da 33p a 75p, oppure è possibile comprare l'intero album alla modica cifra di £6.41. Interessante, non trovate?
