Ultimate Blue Jay Squeaky Gate Call

Finally, after hearing this call ring through the mountains of North Carolina all these years I captured clear video of a Blue Jay making their legendary squeaky gate, rusty pump handle or rusty swing set or close line call – if you have blue jays you know what I mean. What is interesting is I have a lot of blue jays in Florida and I have never heard this call in there before. This is late April 2024 when Jay family groups should be broken up into mating pairs and going low profile to raise their broods so I'm not sure what's going on here with four Jays high in the top of a newly blooming tree – 3 of them patiently listening and watching. By the time I got my camera on a tripod and found the right blue jay to focus on it had been calling continuously for 5 minutes and continued calling for 5 more minutes. So 10 minutes of continuous squeaky gate call delivered with full body involvement – which looks kind of exhausting. You can also hear some blue jays in the distance also making the pump handle call. A small flock of Little Blue Herons quickly and methodically forages through the field for insects. Little Blue Herons are not endangered or uncommon, but are listed as threatened by the State of Florida. They are the least likely heron or egret I have encountered over the years and rarely seen foraging in flocks as they almost always forage alone. The little blue heron can be found in freshwater, salt and brackish water environments. These include mangrove forests, bogs, swamps, salt marshes, tidal flats, estuaries, streams, lakes and flooded fields, but rarely hay fields. In North America, they tend to favor freshwater habitats, while in the Caribbean, they are more often found in saltwater. The subtle beauty of a male Boat Tailed Grackle preening after a morning bath on the prairie. This handsome male Boat-Tailed Grackle has just taken a bath in a Prairie watering hole where cattle graze in the interior of Central Florida. Now its time to dry in the sun and preen his beautiful feathers. If you have only seen them in the cities you are in for a treat. Boat Tailed Grackles are actually quite stunning and intelligent birds when seen out in their natural wild habitat in the morning sun. Their feathers constantly change colors and shimmer blue, green and purple. They are primarily a bird of the southeast coastal areas and prefer marshes and wetlands. In the Florida peninsula they are found inland often associated with large cattle grazing areas. These birds forage on the ground, in shallow water, or in shrubs. They are omnivorous, eating insects, minnows, frogs, eggs, berries, seeds, and grain. Grackles have established significant populations in Gulf and Atlantic Coast cities and towns where they can be found foraging in trash bins, dumpsters, and parking lots. But most of the grackles you see in cities are the smaller common grackles. Boat Tails are considerably larger with their huge, long boat tails. In interior Florida and the Gulf Coast their eyes are usually dark like this fellows – along the Atlantic coast the eyes are often yellow. These Dinosaur sounds always give me chills of excitement as they echo loudly across the Florida prairie at sunrise! And Yes, Dinosaurs are still alive today - that's a scientific fact! And these are considered likely the oldest species of Dinosaurs alive today - you can "Google it" if you don't believe me. Truly Living Dinosaurs 🦕 🦖. I love these calls of Sandhill Cranes echoing in the early morning on the Florida prairie near Lake Okeechobee. This likely bonded pair of Sandhill Cranes are full time residents of Florida. Some hang out around golf courses and suburban areas often stopping traffic as they have little regard for humans, but here in a wild, remote grassland they are skittish as bobcats, coyotes and even an occasional Florida Panther can take them down so I have to film at long distance. No problem picking up the sound though. 2024 Screech Owl Nesting Season Update

The Owl live feed was exciting last season and enjoyed by thousands of people and the Backyard Screech Owls appear to be getting back into action for the 2024 breeding season. I have two brand new and improved Green-Backyard power over internet (POE) wired cameras installed, focused and testing in the primary owl nest box that they've used the past few years including last year. This nest box seems to be their favorite. They have been calling in the Backyard and stopping by some of the bird feeder cameras for perching and hunting. It looks like Luna from the last few years is back and healthy and occasionally roosting in the nest box during the day. No positive ID on the male yet and that drama is yet to be sorted out in the coming month. We had one healthy owlet Angel fledge last season and 3 eggs that never hatched. The Screech owl activity looks to be on schedule so far. Roosting starts in earnest during December and then Egg laying in February or early March. I'll put out updates and start the live feed when things get serious so stay tuned for the next owl adventure. The Screech Owls are getting active and mating season is beginning. I'm almost certain that Luna is back. We'll have to wait and see who the male is. Stay Tuned! If you've never seen the fruit of the Black Walnut the bigger ones are about the size and weight of an official Major League baseball - with a half inch tough green husk covering the actual shell which holds the coveted nut meat. It is one of the hardest nuts to crack in nature.
