How to use arp -a

What is ARP?
ARP stand for Address Resolution Protocol and it is use to resolve IP address to physical network card address which we called it MAC(Media Access Control) address.
This ARP protocol is operate below Network Layer as a part of OSI Network and OSI Data Link Layer.

Where to get MAC address detail?
Every Network cards have a unique 48 bits address written as six hexadecimal pairs like: 00-21-e7-b1-c0-d0. We still haven see any same MAC address being produce for all the network address devices cause MAC address MUST be unique. To get our network card mac-address is pretty simple in windows based OS.

Open up Command Prompt
type ipconfig /all
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

IP address & Mac address
if a packet location is on the same local area network then IP address will resolve into Mac-addressm otherwise, IP address will resolve into router Mac-address.

Open command prompt and ping to 1 of the IP address within same Local Area Network.
type in arp -a
Example result shown as below
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>arp -a

Interface: 192.168.1.10 --- 0x2
Internet Address Physical Address Type
192.168.1.1 00-0b-2b-e7-b0-1e dynamic
192.168.1.2 00-1b-2a-2c-bd-eD dynamic

Inorder to do this, the pc must be ping able and only you will be able to get some info about the Mac-address from the remote pc.

How to wipe out Cisco Router or Switch config file

Just wonder how you all wipe out Cisco Router or Switch configuration for instance router loan from the lab. I believe before start configuration, we might need to wipe out the running config save on the router.

Here is what i will do to wipe out router or switch by CLI Cisco Command.
Required the Router enable password to perform this.

Router> enable (key in the enable password if required)
Router# write erase ( this is to delete the running configuration)
Erasing the nvram file system will remove all configuration files!continue?[confirm]
Press enter to confirm delete configuration
[ok] Erase of nvram complete
This step is applied to Cisco Switch, if you are refer to Cisco Router please proceed with reload command
Switch#delete vlan.dat (To delete the vlan config)
Delete filename [vlan.dat] ?
Delete flash: vlan.data ? [confirm] (press enter to confirm deletion)
Router#reload (Force router to be restart)
System configuration has been modified. Save? [yes/no]:
Key in no and press enter
router restarting and loading ########
Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:
Key in no and you are free to configure ur Cisco Router and Switch

3WXM Connection Security Error

Connection security error was happen during step 7 after click on UPLOAD WX in my previous post 3Com Wireless Lan Controller.If you are not able to locate where is upload WX button, it actually locate at the right bottom corner on 3WXM software. By clicking on the upload WX button, it will connect to 3com wireless controller and import all the configuration.

Just in case you all might facing such an error - Connection Security Error -
Verify the connection between the controller and the PC is a must.
-Ping to controller system ip address from ur pc which install 3WXM software.
-Console to 3Com Wireless Controller and ping to PC with 3WXM installed.
if both side connectivity also working fine then it might be cause by ADMIN certificate need to be present on the 3Com Wireless Controller.

Solution for this error.

display timedate to verify the time&date on 3Com wireless controller are correct
set timedate if time & date is not correct before proceed to generate certificate
Regenerate the corrupted certificate by performing this command below crypto generate key admin 1024 crypto generate self-signed admin
For the self signed certificate, we need to fill in few info on certificate but bear in mind that common name must be in x.y format like 3com.org or penang.com

*Green color is 3Com command
*Red color is an alert when fill in certificate info

This post is specially for people who is getting loan from PTPTN but not yet pay according to the monthly installment or no payment at all. PTPTN is taking very serious action against us if we dint pay back the loan.Here is a real experiences with PTPTN from my ex-colleague.
My ex-colleague was on the way to airport and check in to Phuket from penang airport.

Her friend was going thought the check in process but she was stop by a custom officer for a long check. Officer told my ex-colleague that, she is black listed in immigration list and not allow to out from Malaysia. All this happen because my ex-colleague was not paying back PTPTN for a long period and she is required to pay back full amount before can travel out from Malaysia.

We all might think, why not ask the officer to give one more chances and she can pay back after back from phuket??The answer is NO WAY! you have to pay back full amount before and you will be taking out from the immigration black listed list.

Imagine this is not a vocation trip to phuket but a business trip to Singapore, Australia or even China...what could you said to ur boss or ur company?Think twice...

PTPTN do help us alot with University tuition fees, living fees and extra expenses. We understand that for a fresh graduate is abit hard to pay back such a big amount of money but do remember to pay back small amount just to get ur self clean and not fall in to immigration blacklisted list.

3Com WX4400 lost system password

Finally able to finish configur 3Com WX1200 with 3Com Model 275oAP on time so today will start to configure one of the powerful Wireless controller 3Com WX4400 but this model is EOL already.

After put in console cable and key in default username(admin) and password(). As normal, wx4400> enable . erm, something not right.. asking for password-i try 3com, admin, password, all no able to proceed.
what can i do to recover the password?no worry! here is some sharing from what i get from 3Com knowledge base.

just follow this recovery procedure
1) Need to reboot the 3WXM switch and having console access
2) After rebooting the 3WXM, there will be a prompt to stop the rebooting process by typing a "q" followed by the ENTER.
3) At the prompt "boot>", type the following command: boot OPT+=default

NOTE: Execution of the above command will result in the loss of any configuration that was previously defined.

3Com Wireless Lan Controller

Configured 3Com wireless Lan controller and 3WXM software for very first time. Not hard but also not that easy...Still a lot of thing need to figure out cause not much info can google for 3com.

Let us start from scratch :-
1. Put in console cable (Notice this cable is different with normal 3Com switches cable, controller is using 9 Pin Female to 9Pin Male console cable)
2.Power up the 3Com controller and console with putty ( 9600 bps, 8 bit 1 stop, no parity, hardware flow control none)
3.Press enter 3 time, it will prompt for username(admin) & password()
4. Key in enable and password(admin)
5.Key in quickstart and press Y when prompt (remember this command will delete current controller configuration)

6.Follow the question and answer accordingly
7.After finish the config, key in save config
8.Plug in UTP cable to 3Com controller management port.
9.Launch 3WXM software and login to local host 127.0.0.1
10.Click on the configuration and upload WX(import controller configuration file to pc)
11.Successfully upload.

We can now configure the 3WXM at PC and push to controller by a click on the deploy button.
Hope this will help for other who is configure 3WXM in 3com network field.

How to Configure DHCP on Cisco Router & Switch
We will always deal with DHCP not only router & switch but also Microsoft DHCP server or may be linux server. Google result provide the complete word of DHCP is actually Dynamic Host Controller Protocol which is a protocol used by networked devices (Client) to obatain various parameters necessary for the client to operate in an Internet Protocol(IP) network.

Look at the image below for how DHCP work with cisco router which is act like a DHCP server.

DHCPDISCOVER - Host A broacast a dhcp message to looking for Cisco DHCP server.
DHCPOFFER - Cisco DHCP server acknowledge the message and reply Host A with unicast message with the following information like IP-Address, Default Router, DNS, Domain name, Lease time for IP-Address.
DHCPREQUEST - Host A sending a formal broadcast message to request for the previously offered IP-Address
DHCPPACK - Cisco DHCP server confirm that IP-Address is alocated to Host A and reply with a unicast message.

After knowing the process of DHCP, is time for us to go into command line configuration.

Enable DHCP services on router
router#conf t router(config)#service dhcp
Configuring DHCP IP Address Pool-name
router(config-dhcp)#ip dhcp pool Pool-Name Pool-Name is the name of DHCP pool name
Configuring DHCP Address & Subnetmask
router(config-dhcp)#network x.x.x.x y.y.y.y x.x.x.x is the network IP address eg:192.168.1.0 y.y.y.y is the network subnetmask eg.255.255.255.0
Configuring Default Router for the DHCP client
router(config-dhcp)#default router a.b.c.d a.b.c.d is the default gateway for the network x.x.x.x eg.192.168.1.1
Configuring Domain Name
router(config-dhcp)#domain name www.example.com
Configuring DNS server
router(config-dhcp)#dns-server w.w.w.w w.w.w.w is the dns server for the network x.x.x.x eg:202.188.0.155
Configuring Lease time
router(config-dhcp)#lease (no of days) deault no of days is 1 day.
Configuring Excluded IP-Address
router(config)#ip dhcp excluded-address 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.5

How to Configure Cisco Port Mirroring

In Cisco Port Mirroring also named as SPAN port but bear in mind that, SPAN port only apply to managed switches.
So now the question - what is a SPAN port or Port Mirroring?

I said SPAN is one of the method to monitor the network traffic. With Port Mirroring enabled on Cisco Switches, The switches sends a copy of packet from the network going through at one port or VLANs to a destination port for analyzing purposed.

Source Port - Switched or Router monitored port that use for network traffic analysis.
Destination Port - Monitoring Port that receive a copy of packet from Source port or VLANs.

Lets look at this picture below for PC A, PC B & PC Network Analyzer activity.
* Black Arrow Line = PC B send out packet
* Blue Arrow Line = PC A send out packet
In Conclusion what ever packet that send out from (PA A or PC B)Source Port all will be mirroring to Destination Port(PC Network Analyzer).

Sample Cisco Port Mirroring Command
Configure a Miror on port 1 & Destination on port 24
Switch(config)# monitor session 1 source interface Fa0/1
Switch(config)# monitor session 1 destination interface Fa0/24

Configure a Miror on Vlan 2 & Destination on port 24

If you ask me which ISP is the best to choose or purchase?
I can tell you each ISP having their own term & condition applied on ur internet connection speed and depend on ur answer below...

After all the hazel that been gone thought, Today 1-April 2009 at this historical moment, http://myitservices.blogspot.com had been setup completely and this will be my first post - About Me.

This is a story about Penang guy graduated from Degree comp sci and further study to "University Masyarakat" 3 years ago. You all might think, comp sci studend should be working for web programmer, Database programming or even software engineer but i end up worked as Tech Support specialist in a MNC company.Any one also experience the same as me?

Worked as a MNC tech support has build mine knowledge about PC, Notebook & Server hardware that make me a correct person to serve you when hardware break down.If you need advice on purchasing or any services about pc & notebook, feel free to contact me.

Besides, network engineer is mine new working path now.After finish my CCNA last year and i believe is time for me to start CCNP now.We will expect more Cisco relevant post appear in this blog.Hope this will be a platform for all the Cisco candidate to do sharing cause Sharing Mean Caring!
