India needs innovation, not dependence – Say No to Starlink

Does India really need Elon Musk's Starlink, or does it need to strengthen what it has already built?

Whenever a new technology arrives with a global brand and a promise to change the world, we tend to assume that embracing it is a sign of progress. Anyone questioning its necessity risks being labelled anti-technology, protectionist or opposed to innovation. The debate surrounding Elon Musk's Starlink offers an opportunity to ask these questions.

Should we accept every new technology just because it is new?
Should we consider a technology essential simply because it has succeeded elsewhere?
More importantly, Should India feel obliged to welcome every foreign company on its terms?

At the outset, let us not get confused between availability and necessity. Any country should welcome a technology that solves a real problem, however, it should not mistake technological availability for technological necessity.

Will Starlink solve any problem in India?: Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX, uses a constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide broadband connectivity. Its principal advantage is that it can reach places where laying fibre-optic cables or building conventional mobile networks is difficult, expensive or commercially unattractive. That is a genuine technological achievement. However, India is not a country waiting for the internet to arrive for the first time.

India has invested enormously in mobile telecommunications, fibre networks, digital payments and public digital infrastructure. According to the Government of India's figures published in February 2026, more than 6.31 lakh villages had 4G mobile connectivity, while approximately 98% of villages had mobile connectivity. The BharatNet programme is also extending broadband infrastructure to rural areas.

These figures may not mean that every household has a reliable internet connection, or that every village enjoys the same quality of service. Coverage on a map is not the same as dependable connectivity at every home. Nevertheless, they establish an important fact: India already has a substantial terrestrial telecommunications network.

The question, therefore, is not whether Starlink can provide internet connectivity. It can. The question is: Where does Starlink offer a meaningful advantage over India's existing networks, and who is willing and able to pay for it? For a remote Himalayan settlement, an island community, a disaster-response team or a location where terrestrial infrastructure is impractical, satellite broadband may be an excellent solution. For millions of Indians who already receive affordable internet through mobile networks and fibre connections, why should satellite broadband become a national priority? A technology can be useful without being universally necessary.

Cost is the most important consideration for Indian consumers: Whether one likes it or not, India is a highly-cost-sensitive-market. India's telecommunications revolution has been driven not merely by connectivity but by affordability. Mobile data has become accessible to a vast population, enabling people to use digital payments, access education, communicate with family, conduct business and consume information at relatively low cost.

Satellite broadband operates under a different economic model. It requires specialised user equipment, satellite capacity and associated infrastructure. In December 2025, reports of Starlink's proposed Indian residential pricing cited a monthly charge of ₹8,600 and a one-time equipment cost of ₹34,000. Starlink subsequently clarified that the displayed prices were not finalised Indian tariffs. They should therefore be treated as indicative reported figures, not confirmed commercial prices. It can go up but will not come down though.

Even as an illustration, these figures raise an obvious question. How many ordinary Indian households would choose to spend thousands of rupees every month on satellite internet when terrestrial alternatives are available at a fraction of that cost? India's digital revolution depends on reaching the masses, not just serving customers who can afford premium connectivity. If a family already has adequate mobile broadband, Starlink may offer little additional value for its price. If a village has no reliable terrestrial connection, the calculation changes considerably.

The relevant measure of progress is not how advanced a technology looks, but how effectively and affordably it solves the user's problem.

Satellite phones, satellite internet and a question of necessity: We should distinguish between satellite phones and satellite broadband. However, the underlying question is similar: when should we use satellite connectivity instead of terrestrial infrastructure? Satellite communication is indispensable in certain circumstances. Ships at sea, aircraft, remote expeditions, emergency teams and people in isolated locations may have no practical alternative.

So, should every person who already has reliable mobile connectivity need a satellite phone? Of course not. The same reasoning applies to satellite internet. If mobile networks and fibre broadband can provide reliable, affordable service, they should remain the preferred options for most users. Satellite connectivity should fill the gaps, provide resilience and support specialised requirements. There is no need to replace a functioning solution simply because another solution is available.

In operational excellence, we would first identify the problem, understand its root cause and evaluate possible countermeasures. We would not purchase an expensive machine before establishing whether it addresses a genuine constraint. Why should our approach to national digital infrastructure be any different?

National security is not an inconvenience: Internet connectivity is no longer merely a commercial service. Communications infrastructure has strategic importance, particularly when it involves foreign-controlled technology, critical networks and sensitive geographical areas. India must be satisfied that satellite operators comply with applicable security requirements, lawful interception obligations, data governance rules and other conditions imposed by its regulators. It must also assess how services can be managed during emergencies and how security concerns in sensitive areas can be addressed. These are legitimate questions, not excuses that should automatically be dismissed as bureaucratic obstacles.

A responsible government has two obligations: protect the country and enable innovation. Neither obligation should be used to avoid the other. A foreign company seeking access to India's market must understand that commercial opportunity comes with regulatory responsibilities. India is not obliged to compromise its national interests merely because the technology is sophisticated or its owner is influential.

Is this really about Starlink, or about Elon Musk?: The debate becomes more interesting when commercial interests enter the picture. Elon Musk has criticised delays in Starlink's entry into India and alleged that powerful domestic business interests are obstructing competition. He escalated his criticism by questioning Mukesh Ambani's influence over Indian decision-making. The Indian government, meanwhile, has rejected claims of discriminatory treatment and maintained that satellite operators must meet the applicable regulatory and security requirements. Recent reporting indicates that the regulatory position involves more than a simple dispute between Starlink and Reliance Jio.

Let us be clear: India must not allow any domestic business group to manipulate regulations to protect its commercial interests. Fair competition is essential. If Starlink meets the same legitimate requirements as its competitors, it should receive fair consideration. Meanwhile, the reverse is also equally important. A foreign entrepreneur cannot assume that questioning a country's regulatory decisions will compel that country to change its policies. Nor does a company's global reputation entitle it to preferential treatment.

Any organisation’s business achievements do not place them above scrutiny. Nor do the commercial successes of Indian industrialists. The issue should not be whether Musk wins or Ambani wins. The issue should be whether India and its citizens benefit. That is the standard by which the decision must be judged.

Do global powers always practise what they preach?: Countries frequently advocate free markets, open competition and globalisation while protecting domestic industries when they consider it strategically necessary. The USA, for example, has imposed restrictions on Chinese EV and other strategic imports. Its approach illustrates how national security, industrial policy and trade protection can influence market access even in economies that champion free enterprise. International positions on trade, energy and geopolitical conflicts also evolve as governments reassess their interests. Western governments have criticised India's purchases of Russian oil while their own policies and commercial dealings have reflected changing economic and strategic calculations.

The details of these policies differ, and not every inconsistency proves hypocrisy. The lesson is worth remembering: international relations are rarely governed by economic principles alone. National interests matter.If other countries can scrutinise foreign technology, protect strategic industries and impose conditions on market access, why should India be expected to behave differently? Why should India be criticised merely for asking questions that other governments routinely ask? Why should we assume that a foreign company's commercial interests necessarily coincide with India's national interests? We should neither distrust every foreign company nor blindly trust every foreign promise. We should evaluate each proposal on its merits.

Self-reliance does not mean isolation: Self-reliance does not mean refusing foreign investment, rejecting international collaboration or pretending that domestic technology is always superior. India has benefited enormously from global trade, foreign investment, technological partnerships and competition. Nor should domestic companies receive automatic protection merely because they are Indian.

Self-reliance means having the capability to make informed choices without becoming excessively dependent on external suppliers for critical services. It means developing Indian expertise, strengthening domestic research and manufacturing, investing in our own satellite and telecommunications capabilities, and ensuring that strategic decisions remain under India's lawful control. It also means allowing foreign companies to compete fairly when they can offer better technology, better service or better value.

The objective is not to shut the door on Starlink. The objective is to ensure that the door is opened for the right reasons, under the right conditions and in India's interest.

What should India's approach be?: Let us derive a sensible policy on 5 principles:

Prioritise the connectivity gap. Identify locations where terrestrial broadband is unavailable, unreliable or uneconomical. Satellite connectivity should be encouraged where it provides a demonstrable advantage
Put affordability at the centre. Compare the total cost of satellite broadband with mobile and fibre alternatives. Where public funds or subsidies are involved, demand measurable public benefits
Protect national security. Apply clear requirements covering lawful access, operational accountability, data governance and emergency response, consistent with applicable law
Ensure fair competition. Domestic operators must not receive unfair advantages, and foreign operators must not receive special concessions. The rules should be transparent and consistently applied
Strengthen India's own capabilities. Continue investing in terrestrial networks, domestic satellite technology, research, manufacturing and resilient communications infrastructure.

This is not anti-Starlink. It is pro-India.

Conclusion: Technology must serve the nation, not the other way around India does not have to prove that it is modern by adopting every technology offered by a global billionaire. Nor does it have to reject a useful technology simply because it comes from abroad. We must distinguish between a genuine need and a commercially attractive opportunity. We must distinguish between competition and pressure. We must distinguish between technological progress and technological dependence.

If Starlink can solve a problem that existing networks cannot solve adequately, let it compete fairly and demonstrate its value. If it cannot offer a compelling advantage to the average Indian consumer, there is no reason to treat its arrival as a national imperative.

The same principle should apply to every company, whether Indian or foreign, large or small. India should be open to the world, confident in its capabilities and uncompromising about its national interests. Self-reliance is not a rejection of the world. It is the ability to engage with the world from a position of strength. That is a far better ambition than simply adding another global brand to our list of technological achievements.

SIR - Protests and the Question We Should Really Be Asking

Once again ,India is witnessing political protests, this time, over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This is not a new activity but keeps happening at a regular cadence. The political temperature is rising, allegations are flying, and the Election Commission of India is being accused of attempting to manipulate the electoral process.

Revision of electoral rolls is a routine process and has happened many times in the past too. When electoral rolls are revised, the real issue should not be who vociferous (shouts the loudest) is, but whether every genuine voter gets a fair opportunity to vote. At the centre of the controversy is a dramatic number: around 13 crore names allegedly being deleted from electoral rolls. However, before we accept such a statement, perhaps we should pause and ask a simple question: Are 13 crore genuine, eligible and living voters actually being denied their right to vote?

Numbers can create headlines. Evidence should create conclusions.

People should understand/ realise that a large number appearing in a voter-roll revision does not automatically mean that an equal number of legitimate voters have been disenfranchised. Political parties, too should behave responsibly. Anarchy might get attention but will not help them go far. Indeed, during the Bihar SIR exercise, the Election Commission reported categories including deceased electors, duplicate registrations, permanently migrated or untraceable electors, and electors whose enumeration forms had not been returned. The Commission also provided mechanisms for claims and objections. It also involved almost all the political parties through their Booth Level Agents. When all the parties were involved, why they are protesting now and have not acted earlier?

Electoral rolls inevitably accumulate errors over a period of time. People die, families migrate, People get registered in more than one constituency, addresses change, names and other details may be entered differently, some people move permanently without updating their electoral registration, some people simply may not respond to a verification exercise. The list can go long. Hence, the headline number of names not appearing in a draft roll should not by itself be presented as the number of genuine voters who have been deliberately removed.

There is an important distinction between “13 crore names are not presently on the revised roll” and “13 crore genuine voters have been illegally disenfranchised.” The first is a question of electoral-roll data. The second is a very serious allegation. The second requires evidence. This does not mean that every concern about SIR should be dismissed. Leaving out a genuine voter, even it is in small number, is a concern. The right to vote is not just another administrative entitlement, It is one of the most fundamental mechanisms through which a citizen participates in a democracy.

Hence, the Election Commission must hold a high standard. The process should be:

• Transparent

• Verifiable

• Accessible

• Time-bound

• Capable of correcting mistakes

The Supreme Court's scrutiny of the process is, therefore, not something that should be viewed as an attack on the Election Commission. Although few of its observations are unwarranted and quite sensational. It is precisely how democratic institutions are expected to work - allegations are examined, procedures are tested and mistakes—if established—are corrected.

The Court has already examined the legal basis and proportionality of SIR in the context of Bihar, while the wider controversy continues to generate judicial scrutiny. That is a healthy institutional process. There is, however, an interesting question that deserves much greater public attention. If the political claim is that millions of genuine voters have been removed, where is the corresponding evidence from those voters themselves?

Where are the constituency-wise lists of genuine electors who claim that their names are deleted but say:

• I am alive

• I am eligible to vote

• I have lived at this address

• I have voted in this election from this booth at this constituency

• My name was on the electoral roll

• My name has now disappeared

• Here is my proof

Such cases should not merely be discussed at political rallies. They should be documented. They should be independently verified. They should be presented constituency by constituency. If lakhs or crores of such genuine cases exist, the Election Commission should have to address them. That would be a far more powerful democratic argument than a political slogan.

While this is said there is another aspect that deserves attention. All of us should realise that the responsibility does not lie only with the Election Commission. Electoral democracy is a shared responsibility. The Election Commission has the responsibility to prepare an accurate electoral roll. However, the citizens too, have a responsibility to ensure that their electoral details are correct.

Political parties have an even greater responsibility. Every major political party has workers, booth-level organisations and representatives on the ground. If a genuine voter is missing from the electoral roll, political parties have the organisational capability to identify such cases, help the voter submit the appropriate claim and follow it through.

The ECI's own process provides mechanisms for eligible electors who have been left out to submit claims and for objections to be raised against ineligible entries. Its current voter portal and their user-friendly app also provides facilities to search electoral rolls and submit relevant forms. Thus, perhaps the most constructive political response is to audit the process rather than politicise every number.

Imagine if every political party were to jointly undertake a simple exercise. Take every constituency where substantial numbers of names have disappeared. Divide the cases into categories:

• Deceased voters

• Duplicate registrations

• Permanently migrated voters

• Untraceable voters

• Voters who did not submit the required form

• Genuine voters who were wrongly excluded

Then independently verify the last category. If the numbers are insignificant, the political allegations lose credibility. If the numbers are substantial, the Election Commission has a serious problem to correct. Either way, India wins. That is what a mature democracy should be doing.

The reported differences of opinion among Election Commissioners have also become part of the political controversy. However, disagreement within a constitutional body is not, by itself, proof of wrongdoing. In fact, differences of opinion can be perfectly normal in any serious institution. The Election Commission itself has stated that operational queries and differing views are part of the deliberative process and that final decisions were taken unanimously. The correct response, therefore, is neither to dismiss the differences as meaningless nor to automatically interpret them as evidence of electoral fraud. The sensible response is: Make the decision-making process transparent. Transparency removes suspicion far more effectively than political arguments do.

Protest is a democratic right. But protest should produce evidence and should not be throwing spokes on the wheels of rest of the affairs. There is nothing inherently wrong with political protests. Indeed, the right to protest is an essential feature of democracy. Opposition parties have every right to question the government and the Election Commission but there is a difference between raising a question and declaring the answer. The burden should be on anyone making such a serious allegation to substantiate it. If evidence emerges, it must be taken seriously—irrespective of which political party benefits or loses.

One worrying trend in Indian politics is the increasing tendency to treat every institutional disagreement as an existential battle. Election results are questioned, Electronic Voting machines are questioned, Electoral rolls are questioned, Election Commissioners are questioned, Courts are questioned, Governments are questioned and this list goes on. We should be careful about turning issues into permanent warfare.

Questioning is healthy, but when every disagreement becomes an accusation of conspiracy, public trust itself becomes the casualty. A democracy cannot function if citizens are persuaded that every institution is corrupt whenever the political outcome is unfavourable to them. Nor can democracy function if citizens are expected to accept every decision of an institution without questioning it. The answer lies somewhere in between: Trust—but verify, Question—but substantiate, Protest—but provide evidence, Correct—but do not politicise correction.

Instead of competing to organise bigger protests, political parties should compete to identify genuine voters who have been wrongly excluded. Provide evidence, build trust. Instead of treating the Election Commission as either completely infallible or completely compromised, we could demand that it operate with maximum transparency.

Let us emphasise on “My vote counts – before counting of votes”

The objective would be simple that none should disagree with:

1. No dead or duplicate voter should remain on the roll

2. No genuine voter should be left out

The SIR controversy should therefore not become another chapter in India's endless political confrontation. It should become an opportunity to strengthen our electoral system. If there are mistakes, correct them. If procedures are unnecessarily complicated, simplify them.

If the political parties have evidence of deliberate manipulation, they should present it before the appropriate constitutional and judicial forums. But until allegations are supported by evidence, allegations should remain allegations—not become accepted facts through repetition. India's democracy is too important to be reduced to a contest over who can organise the largest protest or make the loudest accusation.

Can every eligible Indian citizen vote—and can every vote be trusted? – This is the question worth protesting for. That is the question not only worth investigating but worth answering.

India’s poor performance at the Asian Games: Who Is Really Responsible?

We have the population. We have the talent. We have the money. So what is stopping India from becoming a sporting powerhouse?

There is something uncomfortable about India's performance at the 2026 Asian Games. Not because Indian athletes have failed but because India has still not converted its enormous potential into a reliable sporting system. As the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games enter their final phase, India has been around 12th in the medal table, with 45 medals as of September 29th. This is a significant drop from the 107 medals India won at Hangzhou in 2023, when India finished fourth.

The obvious question is: Who is responsible for this debacle? The Government? The Sports Ministry? The Indian Olympic Association? The National Sports Federations? The coaches? The athletes? The infrastructure? Our sporting culture? Or, as some may crudely suggest, are Indians simply not capable of competing at the highest level?

The problem is not the Indian athlete. Perhaps, it is the Indian sporting ecosystem. If we want to fix it, we must be honest about who is accountable for which part of that ecosystem.

It is not good to indulge in blaming so, let us get into the facts. Every sporting competition contains winners, losers, mistakes and surprises. Winning and losing is a part and parcel of a sport. For example, India's Manu Bhaker, despite being a double Olympic medallist, returned empty handed from four shooting events in Aichi-Nagoya. India's shooting campaign also produced several agonising near-misses. This does not make them poor athletes. The same athlete who can win Olympic medals can have an unsuccessful tournament. Performance variation is part of sport, however, inconsistency cannot.

When an entire sporting ecosystem repeatedly produces inconsistent results, we have to look beyond individual athletes. Here is where accountability begins. Hence, who is responsible? Everyone has a role—but not everyone carries the same responsibility. Let us try to accommodate the accountability into six layers.

The Government — It is responsible for the ecosystem. It cannot run every sport however, it can create the conditions in which sports can flourish. It controls or substantially influences:

Sports policy
Funding
Infrastructure
Athlete-support schemes
Sports education
Talent identification
Governance regulations
Federation recognition
International-event preparation
Sports science and research
Grassroots programmes

No doubt, this Govt increased its investment and institutional support. Schemes such as TOPS have helped create an elite-support structure. The Ministry's own data shows that TOPS has been used to support a selected group of elite and developmental athletes. However, here lies an important distinction – “Funding elite athletes is not the same as creating elite athletes.”

TOPS can support a champion. It cannot, by itself, create the 10-year pathway that produces the next champion. We need to ask:

Where was that athlete five, ten or fifteen years before entering TOPS?
Who discovered the child?
Who developed the physical attributes?
Who provided the coach?
Who provided the competition?
Who identified the weakness?
Who provided sports psychology?
Who prevented injury?
Who created the pathway from school → district → state → national → international?

These are the bigger questions the Government has to answer.

Sports Federations — perhaps the biggest accountability gap is here. A federation should exist for the sport and the athlete. Not the other way around. Yet Indian sport has repeatedly experienced disputes over selection, governance, recognition, elections, administration and competing factions. In 2026, disputes surrounding National Sports Federations have already affected athletes' preparation and participation. Reports have documented governance problems involving federations including handball and karate. Courts recorded their observations over selection processes and recognition mechanism.

These are highly unacceptable. Imagine preparing for four years for an Asian Games and then discovering that the organisation responsible for your sport cannot decide on who is eligible to represent India? An athlete cannot solve this problem nor the coach. We cannot expect the Govt to solve every dispute. However, the federation must resolve such issues. Sports administration should be treated as a profession. Running a national sports federation requires knowledge of:

high-performance sport
athlete development
sports science
competition planning
finance
governance
international rules
sponsorship
technology
safeguarding sports personnel
performance analytics

It should not primarily be about who controls an organisation. The athlete should be the customer of the sporting system—not the victim of it.

The Sports Ministry and Government agencies are accountable for execution. The Government can legitimately say: "We have increased funding,” however, this is not the end. Instead, it starts from here. The important question is: What did the money produce?

Did it produce:

more international-standard coaches?
more competitive athletes?
more youth champions?
better injury prevention?
better sports science?
better nutrition?
stronger leagues?
better facilities beyond major cities?
measurable improvement in international rankings?

Money spent is input. Medals are output. I would mention that even medals are not enough. The real KPI should be: How many sustainable high-performance athletes are we producing every Olympic cycle?

India needs to move from a medal-centric model to a pipeline-centric model.

Coaches and high-performance professionals — a forgotten link. We often talk about athletes. We talk about federations. We talk about Government funding. However, world-class sport is ultimately a high-performance engineering problem. The athlete is the output. Behind that athlete should be a team involving:

coach
strength & conditioning specialist
physiotherapist
sports physician
nutritionist
psychologist
biomechanics expert
performance analyst
recovery specialist

India is improving in this area, but the depth of the ecosystem remains uneven. The Sports Ministry itself has recently emphasised the need to develop a stronger indigenous coaching ecosystem and provide international exposure to Indian coaches. That is important.

Because importing a foreign coach for an elite athlete is not the same as building 10,000 Indian coaches capable of developing the next generation.

The athletes — yes, they too must accept accountability. Defending athletes from systemic failures should not mean treating athletes as untouchable. Elite athletes have responsibilities too. At the highest level, talent is only the entry ticket. An athlete must be accountable for:

discipline
training
nutrition
recovery
preparation
competition behaviour
continuous learning
physical conditioning
mental preparation
adherence to anti-doping rules

And occasionally, an athlete simply underperforms. That happens. We should be able to say: "You had a poor performance today." without saying: "You are a poor athlete." That distinction matters.

Indian society - Do we really want to become a sporting nation? We say yes. However, what happens when an Indian child says: "I want to become an athlete." The typical answers we get are:

"First finish your studies"
"Sports is fine as a hobby"
"What will you do for a career?"
"Sports is risky"

The Parents are not wrong. What are the motivating factors available today to choose sports as a career? A job quota that has got stagnation? Career life in Sports is short and post that – what is in store? If the career is not successful, what are the other options to survive?

Until relatively recently, for most Indian families, a sporting career was an uncertain economic proposition. Cricket changed that perception however, it also created another problem. We have demonstrated that Indians can become world-class athletes—but disproportionately in one sport.

The question is not: Why don't Indians have sporting talent? (we have a lot) The question is: Why does talent outside cricket struggle to find a reliable economic and professional pathway?

Then how China does it? - China is not simply a country with more talented athletes. It has built a much deeper sporting system. China's approach has historically involved: talent identification → specialised training → institutional support → sports schools → elite coaching → sports science → international competition → systematic selection.

China also targets sports strategically. That is an important lesson.

An Asian Games medal table is not simply a contest between populations. It is a contest between sporting systems. India has 1.4+ billion people and so is China. So population alone cannot explain the difference. The more useful question is: How effectively does each country convert population into sporting talent? That is totally a different metric.

The next question is: what about smaller countries? This is where India should pay particular attention. A country does not need China's population to succeed. Smaller countries can become disproportionately successful when they concentrate on sports where they have:

cultural depth
coaching expertise
physiological advantages
historical strength
infrastructure
strong talent pipelines

The lesson is not: "Copy China." One should never do that. It is: Choose; Focus; Build depth; Repeat. India cannot realistically become world-class in every sport simultaneously.

What about infrastructure? – India has stadiums. The problem is: Where are those facilities, who can access them, and how are they used? A magnificent stadium that hosts an event twice a year does not create champions. A functional training centre used 300 days a year by thousands of children might. This is where initiatives such as Khelo India matter. The infrastructure should be measured by utilisation and athlete outcomes, not simply by the number of facilities inaugurated.

There is another problem: we sometimes confuse "event management" with "sports development" India has become increasingly capable of hosting major sporting events. Prejudice, in the guise of social justice, should never be allowed to take over. This takes the entire affair in a totally different direction.

If a student violates an examination rule, the violation has to be examined on its facts. If proved wrong, punishment should be handed over. If a professor enforces that rule, he is doing his duty and we cannot blame him/ her for that. That action should not automatically be interpreted through the lens of caste. At the same time, if a professor abuses authority or discriminates against a student, that too must be investigated and acted upon.

The principle should be simple: same facts, same scrutiny, same standards. We cannot have different scales based on our convenience.

பாரதியின் தேசப்பற்று இவ்வாறு ஒரு விரிவான ஆன்மிக நோக்கத்துடன் இணைகிறது. இந்தியா தன் தொன்மையான ஞானத்தை உலகிற்கு வழங்க வேண்டிய தேசம் என்று அவர் கருதுகிறார். எல்லா உயிர்களிலும் இறைவன் இருப்பதாகக் கூறும் வேதாந்த உணர்வை உலகிற்கு அளிப்பதில் இந்தியாவுக்கு ஒரு சிறப்பான பங்கு இருப்பதாக அவர் நம்புகிறார்.

அதனால்தான் இந்தியாவின் வீழ்ச்சி என்பது இந்தியாவின் பிரச்சினை மட்டுமல்ல; உலகின் ஞானத்தையே பாதிக்கும் ஒன்றாக அவர் பார்க்கிறார்.

“சுதந்திர தேவியின் ஒளி பெறாவிடில் அங்கு அறிவுண்டோ, ஆக்கமுண்டோ? காவிய நூல்கள், ஞானக் கலைகள், வேதங்களுண்டோ?”

மேலும்:

“வேத நூல் பழிக்கும் வெளித் திசை மிலேச்சர் பாதமும் பொறுப்பாளோ பாரத தேவி?”

அதற்கான காரணமாக அவர் குறிப்பிடுவது:

“மாதர் கற்பழித்தலும் மறையவர் வேள்விக்கு ஏதமே சூழ்வதும் இயற்றி நிற்கின்றார்”

எனவே, பாரதியின் பார்வையில் சுதந்திரம் என்பது வெறும் அரசியல் அதிகார மாற்றம் அல்ல. அறம், ஞானம், மனித கண்ணியம் ஆகியவை மீண்டும் தழைக்க வேண்டிய அவசியம்.

வர்ணம், சாதி – பாரதியின் சிக்கலான சமூகப் பார்வை

பாரதியின் ஆன்மிகப் பார்வையைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளும்போது, அவரது வர்ணம் மற்றும் சாதி குறித்த கருத்துகளையும் கவனமாகப் பார்க்க வேண்டியுள்ளது.

வேதத்தின் வர்ணாசிரமக் கருத்தையும், பிறப்பின் அடிப்படையில் உருவான சாதிப் பிரிவுகளையும் பாரதி ஒன்றாகக் கருதவில்லை.

வர்ணாசிரமம் என்ற சொல்லில் வர்ணம் மற்றும் ஆசிரமம் என்ற இரு கருத்துகள் அடங்குகின்றன. ஆசிரமம் என்பது ஒரு மனிதனின் வாழ்க்கைப் பருவங்களைக் குறிக்கிறது—மாணவப் பருவம், இல்லறப் பருவம், வானப்ரஸ்தம், துறவுப் பருவம்.

பாரதி குறிப்பாக வர்ண முறையை தொழில் மற்றும் தகுதி சார்ந்த சமூகப் பிரிவாகக் கருதுகிறார். அறிவுத் துறையில் இருப்பவர்கள், ஆட்சி மற்றும் பாதுகாப்புப் பணியில் இருப்பவர்கள், வாணிபம் செய்பவர்கள், உற்பத்தித் தொழிலில் ஈடுபடுபவர்கள் என சமூகத்தின் பல்வேறு பணிகளை அவர் எடுத்துரைக்கிறார்.

அவரது பார்வையில் இவற்றில் எதுவும் மற்றொன்றை விட உயர்ந்ததல்ல. ஒரு இயந்திரத்தின் பல்வேறு பாகங்களைப் போல, ஒவ்வொன்றும் தன் பணியைச் சரியாகச் செய்தால்தான் சமூக அமைப்பு சீராக இயங்கும்.

“வேதமறிந்தவன் பார்ப்பான் – பல வித்தை தெரிந்தவன் பார்ப்பான்

நீதி நிலை தவறாமல் தண்ட நேமங்கள் செய்பவன் நாய்க்கன்

பண்டங்கள் விற்பவன் செட்டி பிறர் பட்டினி தீர்ப்பவன் செட்டி

தொண்டர் என்றோர் வகுப்பில்லை தொழில் சோம்பலைப் போல் இழிவில்லை

நாலு வகுப்பும் இங்கொன்றே இந்த நான்கினில் ஒன்று குறைந்தால்

வேலை தவறிச் சிதைந்தே செத்து வீழ்ந்திடும் மானிடச் சாதி.

நாலு குலங்கள் அமைத்தான் அதை நாசமுறப் புரிந்தனர் மூடர்”

இங்கு அவர் வலியுறுத்துவது பணிகளின் வேறுபாடு; மனிதர்களின் மதிப்பில் வேறுபாடு அல்ல.

அவரது ஞானரதம் இந்தக் கருத்தை மேலும் தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறது. பகவத்கீதையின் "குண-கர்ம" அடிப்படையிலான வர்ணக் கருத்தை அவர் எடுத்துக்கொள்கிறார்.

“பிறக்கும் போது மனிதர்கள் எல்லாம் மிருகங்களாகப் பிறக்கிறார்கள். பயிற்சியினாலும் குண கர்மங்களினாலும் வெவ்வேறு வர்ணத்தினராகிறார்கள். பாரத தேசத்தில் தான் வர்ணாசிரம பேதங்கள் இருப்பதாகச் சொல்வது பிழை. ஸகல தேசங்களிலும் உண்டு. ஆனால் பாரத தேசத்தில் தான் வர்ணாசிரம நெறி சீர் கெட்டுப் போயிருக்கிறது. பூர்வத்தில் பாரத தேசத்தில் வர்ணாசிரம நெறி நான் சொல்வது போலத் தான் இருந்தது. அதற்கு அந்நாட்டிலுள்ள வேதங்கள், உபநிஷத்துகள், புராணங்கள், இதிஹாஸங்கள் முதலிய ஸகல நூல்களும் ஸாக்ஷி. இப்பொழுது பாரதநாட்டைத் தவிர மற்றெல்லா நாடுகளிலும் பகவான் சொல்லிய முறை தான் நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. பாரத நாட்டில் அம்முறை தவறிவிட்டது. அது பற்றியே அந்நாட்டினர் வறுமை, நோய், அடிமைத் தனம் என்ற இழிவுகளிலே வீழ்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள்.”

இந்தக் கருத்துடன் இணைந்து, சமூகத்தில் வெவ்வேறு பணிகளைச் செய்பவர்கள் ஒரே குடும்பமாக வாழ வேண்டும் என்பதையும் பாரதி வலியுறுத்துகிறார்:

“சீலம் அறிவு தருமம் இவை சிறந்தவர் குலத்தினில் சிறந்தவராம்

‘ஒற்றைக் குடும்பம் தனிலே பொருள் ஓங்க வளர்ப்பவன் தந்தை,

மற்றைக் கருமங்கள் செய்தே மனை வாழ்ந்திடச் செய்பவள் அன்னை,

ஏவல்கள் செய்பவர் மக்கள்”

நிறத்தின் வேறுபாடு – தரத்தின் வேறுபாடு அல்ல

பாரதி தனது கருத்தை மிக எளிய பூனைக்குட்டிகளின் உருவகத்தின் மூலம் சொல்கிறார்.

“வெள்ளை நிறத்தொரு பூனை எங்கள் வீட்டில் வளருது கண்டீர்

பிள்ளைகள் பெற்றதப் பூனை அவை பேருக்கொரு நிறமாகும்

சாம்பல் நிறமொரு குட்டி கருஞ் சாந்தின் நிறமொரு குட்டி

பாம்பின் நிறமொரு குட்டி வெள்ளைப் பாலின் நிறமொரு குட்டி

எந்த நிறமிருந்தாலும் அவை யாவும் ஒரே தரமன்றோ

இந்த நிறம் சிறிதென்றும் இஃது ஏற்றமென்றும் சொல்லலாமோ

வண்ணங்கள் வேற்றுமைப்பட்டால் அதில் மானிடர் வேற்றுமை இல்லை”

இந்த உருவகத்தின் மூலம் அவர் சொல்லும் கருத்து எளிமையானது: வேற்றுமை இருக்கலாம்; ஆனால் வேற்றுமை என்பது உயர்வு–தாழ்வை நிரூபிப்பதில்லை.

அவரது பார்வையில் வர்ணம் பிறப்பால் நிர்ணயிக்கப்படுவதில்லை; மனிதனின் தகுதி, இயல்பு, பயிற்சி, செயல் ஆகியவற்றுடன் அது தொடர்புடையது. அதையே அவர் ஞானரதம் வழியாகக் காட்டுகிறார்:

“எனது பிதா க்ஷத்திரியர்.நான் பிராமணன்.என் மக்கள் பன்னிரண்டு பேர்களில் ஒருவனை மட்டுமே பிராமண காரியங்களுக்குத் தெரிந்தெடுத்திருக்கிறேன்.மற்றவர்களை யெல்லாம் மற்ற மூன்று வர்ணங்களின் காரியங்களுக்கு அவரவர்களின் தகுதி, ஸ்வபாவம் முதலியவற்றைக் கருதி உரியவாறு பயிலுமாறு செய்திருக்கிறேன்.”

சாதிக்கு எதிரான பாரதியின் குரல்

இங்கே ஒரு முக்கியமான வேறுபாட்டை பாரதி முன்வைக்கிறார்: வர்ணம் மற்றும் சாதி ஒன்றல்ல. பிறப்பின் அடிப்படையில் மனிதர்களைப் பிரிக்கும் சாதி முறையை அவர் தீவிரமாக எதிர்க்கிறார். பிறப்பின் காரணமாக ஒருவன் உயர்ந்தவன், இன்னொருவன் தாழ்ந்தவன் என்று தீர்மானிப்பதை அவர் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை.

“சாதிப் பெருமையில்லை பாப்பா – அதில் தாழ்ச்சி உயர்ச்சி செய்தல் பாவம்

நீதி தெளிந்தமதி அன்பு – இவை நிறைய வுடையவர்கள் மேலோர்”

மேலும்:

“மேலவர் கீழவரென்றே வெறும் வேடத்தில் பிறப்பினில் விதிப்பனவாம்

போலிச் சுவடியை எல்லாம் இன்று பொசுக்கி விட்டால் எவர்க்கும் நன்மை உண்டென்பான்
சாதிப் பிரிவுகள் சொல்லி அதில் தாழ்வென்றும் மேலென்றும் சொல்வார்
நீதிப் பிரிவுகள் செய்வார் அங்கு நித்தமும் சண்டைகள் செய்வார்
சாதிக் கொடுமைகள் வேண்டா அன்பு தன்னில் செழித்திடும் வையம்.”

இங்கே மீண்டும் நாம் அவரது ஆன்மிக அடிப்படைக்குத் திரும்புகிறோம். மனிதர்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரே இறைநிலையின் வெளிப்பாடுகள் என்றால், பிறப்பின் அடிப்படையில் உயர்வு–தாழ்வு எவ்வாறு நியாயப்படுத்தப்பட முடியும்?

அதனால்தான் பாரதி மனிதர்களை மட்டும் ஒரே சமூகமாகப் பார்க்காமல், அனைத்து உயிர்களையும் அந்த ஒருமையின் வட்டத்திற்குள் கொண்டு வருகிறார்.

“காக்கை குருவி எங்கள் சாதி காடும் மலையும் எங்கள் கூட்டம்”

என்று அவர் பாடும்போது, மனித சமத்துவத்தைத் தாண்டி உயிர்களின் ஒருமை என்ற இன்னும் பரந்த தளத்திற்குச் செல்கிறார்.

அதன் உச்சமான வெளிப்பாடாக:

“பாம்பும் நாராயணன், நரியும் நாராயணன், பார்ப்பானும் கடவுளின் ரூபம், பறையனும் கடவுளின் ரூபம். இப்படியிருக்க ஒரு ஜந்து மற்றொரு ஜந்துவை எக்காரணம் பற்றியும் தாழ்வாக நினைத்தல் அஞ்ஞானத்துக்கு லட்சணம். எல்லா வேற்றுமைகளும் நீங்கி நிற்பதே ஞானம்.”

என்று அவர் கூறுகிறார்.

பாரதியின் ஞானம் – ஒரு முடிவற்ற பயணம்

பாரதியை வெறும் தேசியக் கவிஞராகவோ, புரட்சிக் கவிஞராகவோ, பெண் விடுதலைக் கவிஞராகவோ, சமூக சீர்திருத்தக் கவிஞராகவோ மட்டும் வாசித்தால், அவருடைய ஒரு பரிமாணத்தை மட்டுமே நாம் காண்கிறோம்.

அவருடைய இந்தப் பல்வேறு முகங்களுக்குப் பின்னால் ஒரு ஆழமான ஆன்மிகப் பார்வை இருப்பதை அவரது படைப்புகள் சுட்டிக்காட்டுகின்றன.

அனைத்திலும் இறைவன். அனைத்தும் ஒன்றே.

வேற்றுமைகள் தோற்றத்தில் மட்டுமே.

பகைமை அறியாமையிலிருந்து பிறக்கிறது.

அன்பு அந்த அறியாமையை அகற்றுகிறது.

எல்லா உயிர்களிலும் ஒரே சைதன்யத்தைப் பார்ப்பதே ஞானம்.

இந்த ஞானம் அவரிடம் தனிமனித ஆன்மிக அனுபவமாக மட்டும் நின்றுவிடவில்லை. அது அவரது சமூக சிந்தனையாகவும், சமத்துவக் குரலாகவும், பெண் விடுதலைக் குரலாகவும், தேச விடுதலைக் கனவாகவும் வெளிப்படுகிறது.

அதனால்தான் பாரதியின் ஆன்மிகத்தை அவரது மற்ற பரிமாணங்களிலிருந்து தனியாகப் பிரித்துப் பார்க்க முடியாது.

பாரதியின் பன்முகங்களைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டுமெனில், அந்தப் பல முகங்களுக்குப் பின்னால் ஒளிரும் "ஞானச் சுடரை" முதலில் காண வேண்டும்.

இன்னும் எவ்வளவோ சொல்லலாம்; சொல்லிக்கொண்டே போகலாம். ஆனால் முதலில் நாம் மறந்துவிட்ட பாரதியை மீண்டும் வாசிக்க வேண்டும். அவரது படைப்புகளை வெறுமனே படிப்பதற்காக அல்ல—படித்துணர்ந்து, சிந்தித்து, நம் வாழ்வில் அந்த ஞானத்தின் பொருளைத் தேடுவதற்காக.

பாரதியை நினைவுகூர்வது மட்டும் போதாது. பாரதியைப் படித்துணர்வோம். அவர் கண்ட ஞானத்தை நம்முள் தேடுவோம்.

India's Moral Slide: A Citizen's Reflection

There was a time when India was admired not merely for its diversity, but for its culture of civility. Respectful speech, courtesy towards elders, and dignity in public conduct were considered hallmarks of our society. Today, I increasingly wonder whether we are slowly moving away from those values.

However, the recent public protests have left one deeply disturbed—not because people chose to protest, but because of the language and behaviour that accompanied them.

A democracy thrives on dissent. Citizens have every right to question those in power. Peaceful protest is an essential democratic right. But does democracy also permit public vulgarity, intimidation, and mob behaviour? Freedom is NOT Free! Freedom doesn't mean that it has got no boundaries.

What shocked me most was not the anger. Anger can be justified. It was the language!

The torrent of abusive, sexually explicit insults shouted in public by some protesters—many of them young men and women—made one question what has happened to our social fabric. These are words that many of us would hesitate to utter even in private conversations, yet they are now being shouted through microphones and celebrated on social media. Hurling abuses, use of vulgar languages are treated as status symbol - some promoted laughter shows strictly on these lines only.

In Indian tradition, the tongue is symbolically regarded as the seat of Goddess Saraswati—the source of wisdom, learning, and refined speech. Whether one is religious or not, the symbolism is powerful: words should elevate, not degrade.

When vulgarity becomes normal, society loses something precious.

Protest or Mob Rule?

Equally troubling is what happens after such incidents.

If governments withdraw legal cases simply because protests become politically inconvenient, what message does that send? Does numerical strength determine what is right? If might becomes right, democracy gradually risks becoming mob rule.

One public response to the controversy suggested that if someone's language was defamatory, the aggrieved person could pursue civil or criminal remedies. Legally, that may be correct.

Morally, however, is that enough? Should our only response to public obscenity be to ask whether it violates the law? Or should we also ask whether it reflects the standards we wish to uphold as a society?

The Responsibility of Parents

Perhaps the most painful question concerns parenting. When young people publicly use obscene language, what do their families think? More importantly, what values have they absorbed while growing up?

Political disagreement is perfectly legitimate. Supporting or opposing any political leader is every citizen's democratic right. However, can personal political hostility justify encouraging children to use degrading language in public?

Whether one supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi or opposes him, he occupies the country's highest elected office and is an elderly public figure. Basic civility should not depend on political preference. The same standard should apply to every leader, regardless of party. Respect for institutions does not require agreement with those who lead them.

Respect for Those Who Protect Us

Another disturbing trend is the increasing hostility shown towards the armed forces and the police. These institutions are not beyond criticism. In a democracy, every institution must remain accountable.

Yet, it is equally true that millions of Indians live their daily lives safely because soldiers guard our borders and police maintain internal order. Disagreement should never translate into contempt for those who perform these difficult responsibilities.

A mature democracy balances criticism with respect.

Have We Neglected Character Building?

The larger concern goes beyond any one protest. For decades, education has focused increasingly on academic achievement and professional success. Character formation, moral education, civic responsibility, and ethical conduct have gradually received less attention.

Earlier generations often learnt these values at home, reinforced by schools and communities. Whether because of changing family structures, cultural influences, or political polarisation, that moral foundation appears weaker today.

Perhaps it is time to ask whether we have become successful without becoming wiser.

A Society Divided

Political polarisation has reached a stage where many people judge behaviour not by whether it is right or wrong, but by whether it serves their preferred political side. When this happens, vulgarity is excused if "our side" uses it and condemned only when "the other side" does. Such selective morality weakens public life. A healthy democracy requires disagreement without dehumanisation.

A Warning from History

India's history reminds us that nations are rarely weakened only by external enemies. Internal divisions, erosion of values, and the gradual normalisation of unacceptable behaviour can prove equally damaging.

Ancient political thinker Chanakya warned that a state faces dangers not only from outside aggression but also from internal decay. His message remains relevant: societies often decline from within before they are defeated from without.

Whether or not one agrees with every political viewpoint expressed today, we should all ask ourselves one question:

Are we building a culture where disagreement is expressed with dignity—or one where abuse has replaced argument?

Perhaps it is time for all of us—regardless of political affiliation—to rediscover the virtues of civility, restraint, and mutual respect. Those values have always been among India's greatest strengths.

Dharmendra Pradhan's Resignation: A Political Compulsion or a Strategic Failure?

At last, Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned. But the obvious question is: why now? If his resignation was inevitable, why was it delayed for so long? Why allow the protests to gather momentum, create chaos, and project an image of a Government on the defensive?

The issue is straightforward. If Dharmendra Pradhan was responsible for the NEET question paper leak, he should have resigned immediately. If he was not responsible, then there was no reason for him to resign at all. Delaying the decision has only created confusion and strengthened the perception that the government was reacting to pressure rather than acting on principle.

Question paper leaks are unfortunately not new to India. Over the years, a nationwide nexus involving political interests, criminal networks and elements within the system has repeatedly undermined the integrity of competitive examinations. However, when NEET-related controversies occur twice within three years, it raises serious questions about governance and accountability. Either the Ministry failed to treat the issue with the seriousness it deserved, or there was gross administrative negligence. Whatever the reality may be, the public perception is deeply damaging.

It requires little political insight to recognise that the protests in Delhi eventually became much more than a movement against NEET. What began as opposition to an examination gradually transformed into an anti-Brahmin campaign in some quarters and ultimately evolved into an anti-Modi political movement under the banner of supporting students.

In my view, opposition to NEET is not in the interest of ordinary students. Rather, it serves the interests of a limited group with entrenched stakes in preserving older systems. The broader objective of the protests appeared to be to demonstrate that student-led agitations possess enough political strength to destabilise governments, drawing comparisons with developments in countries such as Bangladesh and Nepal.

Many people who genuinely believed they were standing up for students joined these protests with sincere intentions. However, students became the public face of a movement whose leadership and political objectives appeared to extend far beyond educational reform. Various political organisations and ideological groups used the agitation to pursue a wider political agenda.

Even if the government's eventual decision was unavoidable, it is difficult for those concerned about national governance to view the manner in which it unfolded with satisfaction. The government should have handled the crisis far more effectively from the outset. Only those at the highest levels know why matters were allowed to escalate instead of being addressed decisively in the beginning.

The episode also creates another perception—that of a government growing complacent after successive electoral victories. Confidence is essential in governance, but overconfidence can be costly. This episode may well serve as a much-needed reminder that no government is immune from public discontent or political pressure.

Unfortunately, the Centre appeared to allow the protesters to seize the initiative before placing itself in a position where retreat became the only practical option. With the full machinery of government—its administrative authority, law enforcement agencies and constitutional powers—it is difficult to understand why the situation was allowed to reach this point.

For nearly two weeks, national attention remained fixed on managing the protests instead of focusing on governance. That, in itself, represents a failure of crisis management.

More importantly, the government has inadvertently conveyed a dangerous message: apply sufficient pressure, sustain prolonged protests, and eventually the government will concede. Whether or not that was the intention, that is the perception many will draw. Such a perception is likely to embolden every future pressure group seeking to extract political concessions through street mobilisation.

Perhaps the government concluded that asking the Education Minister to step down was the only way to separate genuine students from the political elements driving the agitation. Perhaps it intends to rehabilitate him politically at a later stage. Or perhaps there are larger political calculations that are not yet visible. Whatever the reasoning, the government's strategy remains difficult to understand.

Equally disturbing were slogans suggesting that India could witness movements similar to those seen in Bangladesh and Nepal. Such rhetoric should not be dismissed casually. Calls that appear to encourage political instability deserve serious attention from the state.

At present, however, the government appears to lack either the political will or the strategic clarity to confront these challenges decisively.

This entire episode should be treated as a warning. If political groups conclude that sustained agitation and intimidation are sufficient to force policy decisions or ministerial resignations, similar tactics will inevitably be repeated. That would be unhealthy for any democracy.

The Central Government now needs to demonstrate greater vigilance, stronger crisis management, quicker decision-making and clearer political communication. Above all, it must ensure that genuine student concerns are addressed without allowing them to become vehicles for broader political confrontation.

The larger political question now is unavoidable:

Has the countdown to the BJP juggernaut begun, or will this episode serve as the wake-up call that prompts timely course correction and meaningful damage control?

Ironically, during the early years of her career, Janaki was often criticised for the quality of her voice—or perhaps became a victim of circumstances and industry politics. Yet she consistently received some of the most challenging compositions.

Songs like "Singaravelane Deva" and "Chinnanchiriya Vanna Paravai" demanded extraordinary control, speed, pitch accuracy, and emotional depth. She not only met those expectations but established new benchmarks.

Her six-decade career was sustained not by popularity alone but by an unmatched ability to conquer compositions that very few others could attempt.

A fascinating example is "Chinnanchiriya Vanna Paravai" from Kungumam, composed by K. V. Mahadevan. The composition is an exceptionally fast, high-pitched semi-classical piece.

The composer had initially considered Seerkazhi Govindarajan for the male rendition, but following actor Sivaji Ganesan's insistence, T. M. Soundararajan sang the song. For the female counterpart, Mahadevan chose S. Janaki despite her comparatively softer vocal intensity. Janaki too possessed a body of work worthy of the nation's highest civilian honour. This is not an argument for comparison, nor does it diminish countless other legendary singers. It merely reminds us that talent and awards do not always share a perfect correlation.

There is far more that can be said about S. Janaki than can fit into a single article. Her artistry deserves books, not blog posts.

For those willing to listen beyond the melody—to the breathing, the phrasing, the emotional nuance, the shifting colours of the voice—S. Janaki remains one of India's greatest singing geniuses.

She may have left this world, but every time her songs begin to play, she returns.

Japan's World Cup journey came to an end. For a few moments, there was heartbreak. Dreams of lifting the trophy were over. But then something beautiful happened.

The players quietly cleaned their dressing room before leaving.

The fans stayed back to pick up every piece of litter in the stadium.

There were no excuses.

No angry outbursts.

No blaming the referee.

No finger-pointing.

Only gratitude, humility, and respect. Some players even apologized to their supporters for not being able to bring home the victory they had hoped for.

And suddenly, something extraordinary happened.

Although Japan had lost the match, they won something far more precious.

They won the hearts of millions around the world.

Many people say, "It's in their DNA." I believe it's something even more powerful.

FIFA Anthem That Became Bigger Than Football

The knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 are finally here. The tension is rising with every match. Back home, however, the monsoon seems to have forgotten its fixture list altogether.

But this isn't a blog about football. Nor is it about the weather. It's about music.

More specifically, it's about the songs that become inseparable from the FIFA World Cup—and why, sixteen years later, one anthem still towers above the rest: Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)."

I'll admit this upfront: my understanding of the beautiful game is, at best, beautifully gossamer. My knowledge of music, thankfully, is a little more substantial.

Every World Cup has had memorable moments. Some have unforgettable goals, others have iconic celebrations. But very few have produced a song that transcended the tournament itself.

For me, nothing has ever come close to Waka Waka.

More Than Just a Tournament Song

Every four years, FIFA commissions an official anthem to accompany the World Cup. Hundreds of composers, producers, singers and bands compete for the honour of creating the soundtrack that will echo through stadiums, television broadcasts, promotional campaigns and fan celebrations across the globe.

It is no ordinary song. A successful FIFA anthem becomes part of the collective memory of an entire generation of football fans.

Since FIFA formally introduced official World Cup anthems in 1990, there have been sixteen of them. Yet none has matched the cultural reach, commercial success and enduring popularity of "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)," the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa.

Even today, mention the 2010 World Cup and chances are the first thing many people hear in their heads isn't the sound of a referee's whistle—it's Shakira singing: "Tsamina mina... eh eh..."

But Was It Really Shakira's Song?

Here's where the story becomes far more interesting. Contrary to popular belief, Waka Waka wasn't created from scratch. Its heartbeat comes from a song released nearly a quarter-century earlier: "Zangalewa", recorded in 1986 by the Cameroonian band Golden Sounds.

Far from being a conventional pop group, most members of Golden Sounds were serving members of Cameroon's Presidential Guard.

The famous chorus— "Tsamina mina, eh eh... Waka waka, eh eh..." —wasn't simply a catchy hook. It evolved from a military marching chant used by Cameroonian soldiers during the Second World War. Over time, it found its way into military parades, sporting events, police ceremonies and scout gatherings across Central Africa.

The lyrics themselves were surprisingly satirical. Rather than glorifying war, they humorously reflected the struggles of ordinary recruits—poor food, meagre salaries, exhausting drills—and gently mocked African officers who collaborated with colonial administrations.

In other words, what the world danced to in 2010 began life as a soldier's marching chant with a healthy dose of social commentary.

An Unexpected Journey to Colombia

Perhaps the most remarkable chapter in the song's history unfolded thousands of kilometres away. During the late 1980s, Zangalewa unexpectedly became a radio sensation in Colombia. That matters because Colombia is Shakira's home country.

She, perhaps, grew up hearing the song long before she became a global superstar. So when FIFA selected her to perform the official anthem for the first-ever World Cup hosted on African soil, she naturally revisited a melody that had stayed with her since childhood.

Working with longtime collaborator John Hill, she transformed the military chant into an energetic Afro-Caribbean pop anthem influenced by soca rhythms.

By sheer coincidence, South African band Freshlyground happened to be recording in New York at the same time. They were invited to contribute a Xhosa verse, blending elements of kwela and pantsula into the final recording.

Ironically, those few verses remain the only distinctly South African musical contribution to a song that came to represent South Africa's World Cup.

From Soldiers to Footballers

One of the cleverest aspects of Waka Waka is how it completely reimagines the original meaning.

The military metaphors remained—but the battlefield changed. Instead of soldiers preparing for war, Shakira compares footballers representing their nations to warriors stepping onto the pitch. The opening lyric captures this perfectly:

"You're a good soldier, choosing your battles..." (full lyrics given at the bottom)

The struggle becomes sporting rather than military. The opponent is no longer another army, but another national team. The battlefield is a football field. It's an elegant transformation of symbolism rather than a simple remake.

The Plagiarism Controversy

Of course, enormous success rarely arrives without controversy.

Soon after Waka Waka was released, questions emerged over whether Shakira had copied Zangalewa without proper acknowledgement. The issue wasn't that she had borrowed the melody—musical adaptations happen all the time.

The concern was attribution. Members of Golden Sounds expressed disappointment that the original creators had not initially received appropriate songwriting credit or royalties. Fortunately, the disagreement never escalated into a prolonged legal battle.

Shakira's management and Sony Music reached an amicable out-of-court settlement with the Cameroonian musicians. Golden Sounds were officially recognised as co-writers, ensuring they received both proper credit and their share of future royalties.

In the end, it became less a story of plagiarism than one of delayed recognition.

Why It Still Endures

Many World Cup songs are successful during the tournament and quietly disappear once the final whistle blows.

Waka Waka did the exact opposite. It outlived the tournament. It became one of the best-selling World Cup songs ever recorded, amassed billions of views and streams, crossed linguistic and cultural boundaries, and remains instantly recognisable more than a decade later.

Perhaps that's because it carries something deeper than an infectious rhythm.

It is a rare piece of music whose journey spans continents and generations—from military barracks in Cameroon, to radio stations in Colombia, to recording studios in New York, to stadiums in South Africa, and finally to football fans around the world.

For a song built on the idea of unity, that feels strangely appropriate, the greatest football story isn't about the player who lifted the trophy. Sometimes, it's about the song everyone remembers long after the final whistle.

A healthy democracy does not thrive on the strength of the ruling party alone. It requires a credible, constructive, and effective opposition—one that questions, critiques, and holds the government accountable while offering a compelling alternative vision. In that sense, the current state of the opposition in India raises important questions about its relevance, strategy, and future.

The recent political developments across the country suggest that the opposition is struggling not merely because of electoral setbacks, but because it has failed to adapt to a changing India. While internal divisions, defections, and leadership challenges have weakened opposition parties, the deeper issue lies in their inability to understand the aspirations and mindset of today's voter.

For decades, much of Indian politics was shaped by narratives built around identity, social divisions, and historical grievances. However, India in 2026 is not the India of previous decades. Greater access to education, information, digital connectivity, and social awareness has created a more informed electorate. Voters today are increasingly driven by aspirations, governance outcomes, economic opportunities, and national confidence rather than traditional political mobilization based on caste, religion, or regional fault lines.

The Congress Party, historically India's dominant political force, illustrates this dilemma most clearly. The challenge before Congress is not merely rebuilding alliances but redefining its purpose and message for a new generation of Indians.

If the opposition seeks revival, it must move beyond the politics of fragmentation. The wait is finally over. For decades, I have listened to Ilaiyaraja's film music and witnessed the sheer breadth of his genius. I have also spent considerable time with his non-film works such as How to Name It? and Nothing But Wind. While I admired the ambition, craftsmanship, and originality of those albums, I always felt that something was missing.

Perhaps the reason was simple. Cinema had become Ilaiyaraaja's natural habitat. In films, music does not exist in isolation. Lyrics, characters, emotions, visuals, and narrative arcs provide creative stimuli. Every film composer, however brilliant, draws inspiration from the world surrounding the music. The scene itself often becomes a collaborator.

In those earlier standalone albums, I sensed the absence of that external spark. The music was beautiful, sophisticated, and often groundbreaking. Yet, it never fully convinced me that Ilaiyaraja had surpassed himself outside the cinematic universe he had dominated for decades.

That is precisely why I approached Valiant (Symphony No. 1) with a degree of hesitation. I was wrong.

Having finally listened to Valiant, I can say this without reservation: "Ilaiyaraja has not merely composed a symphony; he has conquered one of the most formidable artistic challenges imaginable. He has transformed what could have been an uphill creative battle into a monumental triumph. This is not a film composer experimenting with classical music. This is a composer engaging confidently with a tradition that stretches back centuries..."

The Myth of the Conservatory-Trained Genius: A frequently repeated narrative surrounding Ilaiyaraaja's symphonic venture is that he achieved this feat despite lacking the formal conservatory education that shaped Europe's great composers. Frankly, it is only partially true.

While he may not possess a conservatory pedigree, Ilaiyaraja's grounding in Western music is far more substantial than many acknowledge. His training under Dhanraj Master provided him with a rigorous foundation in Western harmony, orchestration, notation, and compositional techniques. Added to this were decades of independent study, listening, analysis, and practical application while simultaneously composing thousands of songs. His challenge was never educational. His challenge was something far more difficult.

The Burden of Being Ilaiyaraja: Ironically, Ilaiyaraja's greatest obstacle was not the symphony itself. It was Ilaiyaraja.

Most composers who attempt their first symphony arrive as relative unknowns. They enjoy the luxury of surprise. Audiences approach their work without preconceived expectations. Ilaiyaraaja enjoys no such privilege. His musical fingerprints are embedded deeply in the cultural memory of millions. A casual listener can identify a Raja phrase, a harmonic movement, or an orchestral texture within seconds.

What is usually considered a strength becomes a burden in this context. In classical music, unpredictability is one of a composer's most powerful tools. When audiences already know your language intimately, creating surprise becomes extraordinarily difficult.

Then there is another challenge. Film music permits certain advantages. A powerful visual can elevate a melody. A lyric can intensify emotion. A dramatic performance can compensate for musical simplicity.

A symphony offers none of these conveniences. There are no actors. No lyrics. No visual narrative. No cinematic distractions.

The composer must sustain the listener's attention through musical architecture alone. That is a daunting task. Valiant embraces that challenge fearlessly.

Escaping Two Shadows: Writing a melodic symphony in the twenty-first century is almost an act of rebellion. The giants—Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky —explored melodic possibilities so thoroughly that the territory often appears exhausted.

Turning Constraints into Freedom: What makes Valiant fascinating is that Ilaiyaraja neither imitates the masters nor attempts to reinvent the symphony through gimmickry. Instead, he exploits the opportunities the form naturally provides. Freed from commercial expectations and cinematic compulsions, he allows himself creative freedoms rarely available in film music.

Rhythmic Freedom: One of the delights of the symphony is its fearless embrace of shifting meters and unconventional rhythmic structures. The brilliant 9/8 passages in the third movement reveal a composer entirely comfortable stepping outside conventional rhythmic comfort zones.

70' களின் பிற்பகுதியில் வெளிவந்த திரைப்படம், "அவர் எனக்கே சொந்தம்". இப்படத்தின் ஒரு பாடல் “தேவன் திருச்சபை மலரிது / மலர்களே” ஆகும். “ஜனனி ஜனனி ஜகம் நீ” பாடல் இசைக்கும் வரை, இந்தப் பாடலையே இளையராஜா தமது மெல்லிசை கச்சேரிகளில் அறிமுகப் பாடலாகப் பாடி வந்தார்.

நமது இந்த போஸ்டில் நாம் இதே படத்தில் வந்த வேறு ஒரு பாடலை பற்றி அலசுவோம். இன்றைய தேதியில் நாம் அனைவருக்கும் அறிமுகமாகிய பாடல் சிந்து பைரவி படத்தில் வந்த "பாடறியேன் படிப்பறியேன்". இந்த பாடலில் பாரம்பரிய நாட்டுப்புற பண்ணிசையோடு கர்நாடக சங்கீதத்தை கலந்து நம் செவிகளுக்கு விருந்தளித்தார் ராஜா. ஆனால், அது போன்ற ஒரு பிரமிக்கவைக்கும் சோதனையை அவர் 70களிலேயே செய்திருக்கிறார். இந்தப்பாடல் அப்படி பட்ட சோதனையின் பலனே.

Winning and losing are both integral parts of democratic politics. Any political party that enters an electoral contest must be prepared to face either outcome. If victorious, it should remain grounded and continue working for the people without complacency. If defeated, it must show resilience, patience, and the discipline to rebuild — learning from setbacks while preparing for the next opportunity.

History repeatedly shows that political relevance is not determined solely by victory or defeat, but by how effectively a party responds afterward.

Consider the example of the DMK in Tamil Nadu. After suffering a major electoral setback — including the defeat of their own party leaders and various other senior leaders and ministers — the party did not retreat into silence. Instead, it reorganised itself rapidly, re-entered public discourse aggressively, shaped narratives, and kept itself politically visible. Regardless of ideological differences, one cannot deny the intensity and consistency with which it reclaimed political space.

Now contrast this with the current situation of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. Nationally, the BJP has expanded significantly:

It continues to govern or share power in multiple states across India
It has consolidated its presence in the Northeast
It has made historic gains in states where it was once considered politically marginal
It has steadily emerged as a formidable national force

Yet, in Tamil Nadu, the party appears unusually passive at a time when several politically sensitive debates are unfolding in public life.

There are no dearth of controversies in the state. Recent controversies involving:

Rape & Murder of a 10 year old girl in Sulur
Change of portfolio for a minister just because a fringe group protested it citing the "caste" of the Minister (Is this not going against the Constitution?)
Transfer/ shifting of an IAS office from HR&CE just because a fringe group threatened them citing the "Caste" as the reason (Is this Govt so weak to succumb to every threat from every fringe group even though it is unconstitutional?)
Questions of ideological consistency (Singing of Vande Mataram in official ceremonies)
Religious symbolism in public functions,
And governance-related narratives,

All of these have created opportunities for political engagement and opposition mobilisation. However, the visible response is not evident at all.

Why are there no coordinated state-wide protests, public campaigns, legal interventions, or sustained media engagements by this party?

Why does the party machinery & their legal wing appear less active than its supporters on social media?

Why is there a sense of hesitation instead of urgency?

Politics rewards visibility, narrative control, and continuous public engagement. A vacuum in politics never remains empty for long — it is quickly occupied by those willing to act decisively.

This raises an important organisational question for the BJP in Tamil Nadu:

Is the current leadership structure capable of energising the cadre and sustaining political momentum on the ground?

Many supporters continue to feel that this is the time to bring aggression, clarity, and direction to the party’s state-level politics. If that perception is widespread within the cadre base, then the leadership must introspect seriously about strategy, communication, and organisational effectiveness.

Tamil Nadu politics has never rewarded inactivity.

It rewards speed
It rewards visibility
It rewards relentless engagement with public sentiment

Any political party that fails to recognise these, risks losing not just elections — but relevance itself!

Will the Central Leadership take a note of it or will they go to the so-called political advisors who have an hidden agenda and seek their consultancy that will bury the party forever in this State?

Tamil Nadu often prides itself on being the land of rationalism and social reform. Yet, over the decades, what has frequently passed off as “rationalism” has, in practice, become selective criticism aimed predominantly at Hindu beliefs, symbols, and traditions.

In the 1970s, E.V. Ramasamy (so-called Periyar) engaged in provocative acts such as breaking the idols of Hindu deities, burning images and publicly insulting Hindu deities. Much of Tamil society remained silent. There was neither widespread outrage nor meaningful condemnation. Even sections of the media hesitated to question or challenge such actions. Whether this silence arose out of fear, political convenience, ideological alignment, or social indifference, history must honestly acknowledge that Hindu sentiments were expected to simply absorb the insult.

Even today, political discourse in Tamil Nadu continues to celebrate this ideological legacy. From time and again, one has to prove himself as a rationalist from such a legacy and accrodingly have to make certain rhetoric comments. Udhayanidhi Stalin’s statement in the Assembly that “Sanatan Dharma must be eradicated because it divides people” was not an isolated remark. It was a continuation of a long-standing political culture where attacking Hindu traditions is often projected as intellectual courage or rationalism.

What is more concerning is the forum in which such remarks were made. The Legislative Assembly is meant for governance and public policy, not for provocative ideological messaging unrelated to the subject under discussion. Yet neither the ruling establishment nor the Speaker found it necessary to object, intervene, or expunge the remarks. Selective secularism has become so normalised that statements targeting Hindu traditions are often treated as politically acceptable.

True secularism cannot be selective. A society cannot claim to uphold equality while permitting mockery or hostility toward only one faith tradition. If respect for religious sentiments is expected in one context, it must apply uniformly across all religions and communities.

Tamil society itself demonstrates how deeply spirituality remains woven into public life. Millions gather at temples, undertake pilgrimages, observe fasts, and participate in festivals with immense devotion. Such faith cannot be erased through political slogans or rhetorical grandstanding. Ironically, even many leaders who publicly endorse anti-Sanatan rhetoric come from families that continue to practice Hindu rituals and temple worship privately.

For decades, Hindu-bashing has often been normalised in Tamil Nadu’s political ecosystem, sometimes disguised as anti-caste politics, social justice, or rationalist reform. Simultaneously, anything perceived as culturally Hindu is frequently projected as “anti-Tamil.” This manufactured binary has shaped political narratives for generations.

The larger issue, however, goes beyond one speech or one individual. Hindus cannot continue to remain the default punching bags of selective secularism. A mature democracy must ensure that criticism, debate, and reform apply equally across all ideologies and religions — not exclusively toward one community.

At present, very few political forces openly challenge such rhetoric, largely due to electoral calculations and ideological compulsions. Until a broader political and social shift takes place, such statements will continue to surface from time to time in Tamil Nadu’s discourse.

But societies evolve. Public consciousness changes. The expectation that Hindus alone must silently tolerate ridicule in the name of rationalism may not continue indefinitely. The days ahead may witness a stronger demand for balanced secularism, mutual respect, and equal standards for all faiths.

Consumerism has become the defining religion of our age. Economies are judged by how much people buy, not by how sustainably societies endure shocks. That is why appeals for austerity today sound politically risky, economically uncomfortable, and socially unpopular.

Yet, extraordinary times demand uncomfortable conversations.

With the Hormuz Strait effectively disrupted for over two months, nearly one-fifth of global oil flows remain impacted. Fuel prices globally are far above February levels. India has absorbed much of the shock so far instead of fully passing it on to consumers, but this buffering cannot continue indefinitely without consequences for the rupee, forex reserves, fiscal stability, and inflation management.

In that context, the PM’s appeal to reduce fuel consumption, use public transport, and defer discretionary gold purchases is not merely symbolic. It is an early signal that the economic environment ahead may require collective restraint.

But can austerity alone solve a structural energy shock? Realistically, NO!

Even if households consume less fuel or postpone gold purchases, the scale of the external imbalance — estimated at tens of thousands of crores monthly — cannot be offset purely through behavioural change. Austerity can reduce pressure at the margins, but it cannot substitute for macroeconomic strategy.

And austerity has second-order effects.

Reduced travel impacts airlines, tourism, hospitality, and aviation-linked employment. Lower fuel consumption hurts retail fuel operators who earn per-litre commissions. A slowdown in gold purchases affects jewellers, artisans, small traders, and the wider informal ecosystem dependent on wedding and festive demand.

This is why governments must pair restraint with economic activation.

India possesses one underleveraged strategic asset: household gold. Nearly 35,000 tonnes of privately held gold sits largely idle. If even a fraction is systematically monetised through trusted and simplified institutional mechanisms, the jewellery industry could sustain demand without excessive fresh imports that strain foreign exchange.

Similarly, if the Hormuz disruption evolves into a prolonged geopolitical stalemate, India cannot afford a simultaneous growth slowdown. Public infrastructure spending may need to accelerate further despite inflationary concerns. In periods of external uncertainty, maintaining employment generation and economic momentum becomes as important as inflation management.

Most importantly, crises often create the political legitimacy required for long-pending reforms.

PSU disinvestment remains one of the most obvious unfinished agendas. Years after approval for disinvestment across dozens of CPSEs, execution remains slow. Political capital is highest immediately after electoral victories — not closer to major state elections when caution overtakes reform appetite.

History shows that nations rarely reform during comfort. They reform under pressure.

The larger question, therefore, is not whether austerity is desirable. It is whether India can convert this crisis into an opportunity for structural correction: lower import dependence, better energy discipline, accelerated reforms, deeper financialisation of idle assets, and more resilient domestic growth engines.

Consumerism may fuel economies in normal times. But resilience sustains nations during crises. And the coming months may test which of the two matters more.

At the heart of both situations lies one central constitutional principle: “In a parliamentary democracy, governments are formed not merely by electoral narratives, but by legislative majority”.

West Bengal: Can an Incumbent Chief Minister Refuse to Resign?: In West Bengal, despite a decisive electoral verdict, the incumbent Chief Minister has reportedly indicated reluctance to resign immediately, triggering political uncertainty and constitutional debate. Many assume that defeat in an election automatically removes a Chief Minister from office. Constitutionally, that is not entirely correct.

Instead, the outgoing ministry usually continues in a caretaker capacity, until the new Assembly is constituted and a new government takes office. Can the Governor dismiss the CM directly? - Yes — but only in limited circumstances.

In recent political discourse, there’s a growing narrative that the opposition has “outplayed” the Centre on the issue of delimitation. Some statements have gone as far as framing it as a contest between states—most notably the claim by M. K. Stalin that “Tamil Nadu has defeated Delhi.”

That framing is misplaced. This is not a competitive federal contest, nor a zero-sum political game. Delimitation is, first and foremost, a constitutional obligation.

Let’s ground this debate in facts.

The Indian Constitution, under Articles 81 and 82, mandates periodic delimitation based on Census data. This isn’t discretionary—it’s built into the system. What’s often overlooked is that this process has been deferred, not dismissed.
