This month has been spent creating and sharing ideas with Eileen Hull Designs dies from past releases. Though instead of “going big” we are going the other way, say - little, small, miniature.

Now I’ll be sharing other ideas with you. One is a way to give a small handmade gift using a variety of @Eileen Hull Designs dies once again. Using the Tiny Book Case die (664424) and the Tiny Book die (664423) as the packaging and Charms thinlit dies (666769) and the two flower shaped thinlit dies from the set called Bookmark, Pocket & Topper (666767) to create a unique dimensional set of earrings.

Here are two other sets of the earrings made with different papers for both the background and the flowers

The last project created used the largest cube/box from an old favorite of Eileen’s dies, 3D Blocks/Cubes (658984). I constructed the block with an open top to create a little baskets. Using a combination of felt and textured paper strips they are covered in a woven pattern. They can be used as a decorative element, for tiny gifts or favors for any occasion. My version holds paper covered egg shapes for the coming Easter/Spring season. Add a handle if desired.

Sharing ideas from the past and a few more recent to hopefully inspire you to create from homemade goodness for the coming season.

Whether it’s gifts to give or something to put the gifts in this is meant to give you some ideas!

I have been a big fan of Sizzix for a very long time, even before Eileen began designing for them. I have always found them one of my favorite and useful tools to use in projects I was creating. My main goal for this post is to share ideas using mostly dies designed by Eileen. Another good reason to use them is that coordinate so well together no matter who they are designed by.

You will find photos of several of my projects posted here. Hope that they will nspire you with to create your own projects.

What To Do With Embossing Folders

Anyone who may follow me or know me, does know that my very favorite tools are those from Sizzix. The dies are my "go to" favorites, but I a fan of all the components they make.

This month Eileen Hull's Team have been sharing ieads with her designs of folders for Sizzix.

Here is one that I created this week! It consists of the Storage Box die for the box base and lid.

The lid is given design and texture by using an embossing folder. The project is completed with some embellishments using a selection of thinlit dies from Eileen's collection.

Thin metal sheet to create a band around the box lid

Felt, off white, green

Double sided adhesive tape, 1/4", 1/2"

Beads, for flower centers

DIe cut box, twice, to create the top and bottom of the box.
Emboss the metallic paper with the large embossing folder.
Center the embossed design for the lid and mark where it will be cut. (Use the wrong side to make marks, before cutting to fit lid.) My paper did not completely fit, so an additional metal band was made to go around the bottom of the lid.
A strip of off white felt was cut with scallop scissors to make a little contrasting band. Glue near the top of one side of the lid or as desired. (Optional)
Green felt leaves are die-cut .
Thinlit flower dies are cut from the metallic paper, backed with vellum to make flowers of various sizes.
Position the leaves and flowers in a desired arrangement. Glue all in place and allow to dry.
Add a flower center of choice if desired to compete the lid embellishments.

The original set of pins was made using felt. It’s best not to use a thick felt, a thinner weight is easier to fold. The small square is easier to handle if you use a craft iron to press the folds that form the pieces. (Use something like a mini Olisio iron or Clover mini iron.)

I used a piece of poster board to cut the circle and triangle from, plus two coordinating pieces from felt or wool of each shape. I glued one of the fabric shape onto the poster board shape. The folded pieces are then arranged and glued onto the shape.

For the tree, die-cut 9 small squares from felt or wool.

Die-cut 2 star charms from gold foiled paper.

Die-cut the small flower from the red foil paper and felt.

Die-cut the tree trunk from brown felt.

Die-cut a triangle shape with geometric box die, one from poster board and two from felt or wool.

For the wreath, die-cut 10 small squares from felt or wool

Die- cut the bow using the two pieces, smooth solid for background piece, red foiled for bow outline.

Die cut two circles from from felt or wool and one from poster board.

Refer to the photos for the folding of the small die-cut squares. Once all the squares are folded they can be glued at the fold or use a small cut piece of Aileen’s Fabric Fusion sheets at the fold

After all the small squares are folded they can be arranged on the triangle for the tree and the circle for the wreath. They may need some adjusting to fit them on the background surface before gluing them in place, once a desired arrangement is found. Set aside for glue to set up. For the tree, add the star shaped to the top and add the foil and felt flower on top. On the wreath, use three pine worked stems to form a little pine swag to glue at the center, then add the red paper bow to finish. Both pins can be decorated how you wish with other decorations.

Here are the same pins made using wool that is backed with a green mulberry paper. The fused paper helps give the wool slightly extra body for folding and shaping.

Changing seasons bring new and old decorations out! Sharing some of them here with you to to consider your crafting hands making. If you are lucky to have Sizzix tools available you have a great head start.

This banner is perfect for the entire Fall season and easy to hang almost anywhere to catch the eye. It's made using felt and fabric panels with the perfect flower of the season adorning the center of each.

This project was made using felt, fabric and assorted types of paper. The entire project can be made using papers of course. I like the variety that other materials can give to a project.

Materials Used:

Process

Two base flags can be cut from the card caddy die. Refer to photo to show where to cut to form two flags.
The card panel can be trimmed slightly on the two side edges to make a bit of framing. Refer to photo.
Cut the base flags from felt. NOTE: These can also be made from papers if desired. Cut as many base flags that you'd like for the banner.
Cut fabric with card panel thinlit die for each of the base flags. NOTE: If using fabric, it's best to stiffen it with either a faric stiffner or using some forn of interfacing, the fabric will cut better. If using paper, not need to worry.
Cut 2-3 of the smaller sunflower petals for each flower.
Cut 2 of the sunflower leaves for each.
Cut 1 sunflower center for each.
Cut 2 of each other leave die or pine branches for each.
Shape the sunflower petals for added dimension. Add ink if desired for shading.
Add white and/or black dots to the brown centers for added dimension if desired.
Glue card panel shape to the felt base flags.
Arrange the sunflowers and greenery onto fabric panels and glue all pieces into place.
Finish by glueing each flag onto a flat ribbon for hanging.
Hang your new decoration!

New Ideas Released With A Re-Release of Fabulous Dies + More

It's another release time from Eileen Hull Designs! It's also been slightly a different release this time around! With Eileeen traveling and teaching in various places across the pond, the re-release of three dies and a new addition of stencils and matching thinlits became available to some. Eileen is back from a whirlwind trip and we are here to show off mor ideas using the latest release.

Now to get on with ideas I chose to make -

Since the Treasure Box, Stacking Drawer Box and Notebook dies were released awhile ago, I did have a few samples that were made previously that I'm sharing. With the original pieces I went for showing more ideas of using various materials to create and cover the shapes.

With the Stacking Drawer Box, the individual box can be used in a variety of ways. As single compartments alone or placed inside other boxes or creating a larger drawer holder. Here I made eight drawers and constructed a larger surround to hold them. These two elements then are hinged together.

Let's hop right into a new season with new ideas, new inspiration and NEW releases from Eileen!

A NOTE FROM EILEEN -

I'm so happy to introduce this brand new collection of mine from Sizzix! As always, I try to create designs that may be used together but also stand alone. There are four pieces in this set.

The Storage Box is an XL ScoreBoard die measuring 4” square, the largest square box yet! This box is constructed with a removable top and may be used in many ways, such as organizing desk and office supplies, as a gift box, storing craft supplies and packaging for baked treats.

The Mini Book is one of my favorites because you can create a book using this die in an evening, and use up your scraps in the process. This book measures 3 3/4” x 2 1/4” and comes with a strap/handle and tiny label for the book cover. It also makes a great bag topper if you fold it in the middle and also will hold a business card.

There is a new Thinlits called Faux Postage- the full panel is designed to fit on a 5” x 7” card and creates a fun postage stamp effect. You can also cut (or tear) each stamp apart and use the individual pieces as a miniature work of art! This coordinates with similar dies: Snail Mail (A-2 card size) and Mini Slimline (6” x 3”).

The Lace 3D embossing folder is so amazing! It’s a new LARGE size measuring 8 1/2” x 5 3/4”. It works great on bigger journal covers, card backgrounds and on home decor pieces. This is created from vintage lace that I have collected and there are so many ways I want to use this!

NOTE: This new die has already become one of my favorites! It has so many possibilities like most of Eileen's box dies. Beside being a great base box to decorate it has functional uses in many ways. Made a few bottom bases and the tops out of plain mat board for holding tools, brushes, pens and such!

NOTE: The "bits and pieces" book has a tab hinged spine inside, with scrapes making pockets and tucks to hold tiny bits using the "faux' stamps" die that embellished with tiny bits.

The Password book cover is kmade from foil that is fused with iron-on adhesive, which makes the foil sturdy, but still flexible, and able to be embossed. Plus, who doesn't like a cute tiny

book!

ADDITIONAL PROJECTS

Foil embossed pouches hold a collection of felt flowers

NOTE: The pouches or pockets are die-cut from foil that is fused together. After die-cutting they are embossed with the 3D Lace large embossing folder. There is a light coat of black Luster Wax applied to the surface. Felt flowers and leaves are die-cut from older Eileen Hull dies and create a colorful addition to the pouches, along with a little butterfly. These can be made as single little door knob hangers or to hang anywhere. Make two or more for a shelf or window banner.

NOTE: THe welcome sign starts with a felt background cut using the cover of the large journal die (this must be cut using the Big Shot Plus machine). The next layer is fused foil that is painted with white paint or gesso, then embossed with the 3D Lace folder, and finished with Rose Gold Luster Wax added to the top. All elements used are ALL various dies from Eileen. The background, behind the wreath is the tiny book die coered in a simple print paper. Leaves are fabric, that was fused togerther with a iron-on fusible. Added extras are yellow felt flowers, pink hearts, white paper fences and paper houses, finished off with the word "welcome".

NOTE: This faux postage thinlit is becoming another favorite! Use as one whole cut or tear into smaller sections or individual pieces and let the creatiity flow!

Hope these projects help give some inspiration on what is possible with Eileen's dies. I like to challenge myself with new materials to use with her dies. Some of the projects here show that! Think outside the box and give something a try, it doesn't hurt ... it may lead to a better idea, something new and different, but most of all your creating ... go for it and have fun! I'm looking forward to being inspired by everyone.

Die-cut Dream Catchers

With the latest die release from Eileen Hull Designs for Sizzix, ideas are flowing! After making several projects with the three re-released dies more inspiration started. I chose the Embroidery Hoop die to play around with for this post.

Take a simple circled shaped die-cut and see where it takes you! Dream catchers and sun catchers just happened to be something I began to think about. I made a little project for the release earlier this month and sent it off to Eileen as one of the samples.

Here it is - I consider this more of a "sun catcher".

That got me to thinking about how else to use the cuts from this die. Originally I was going to make a traditional dream catcher and use string to make the inner design, then the idea came to see how can I make one but use dies instead.

HERE'S HOW THIS PROJECT IS CREATED -

Creating the hoop -

I cut 4 to 5 hoops from stiff board. I chose to use packaging from cereal boxes to cut the shapes. It's inexpensive and most have boxes like this that can be recycled for such projects. The hoop cuts are all glued together to form a thicker ring. The glued circle hoop shape could e painted but I chose to wrap it. For one I used a white thin, flat cording and the other a narrow (1/2") fabric. After tightly wrapping each with the two different materials I had to decide what and how I would add for design to the center.

This is what I used for wrapping the hoops -

Creating the center motif -

To make the center designs I went to some materials that again could be recycled. The list is patterned tissue paper, paper towels saved from cleaning up other art projects and cereal bag packaging. The two different saved papers are fused between two layers of the cereal bag packaging. The process of fusing with cereal bags can be found by searching online. NOTE: Maybe in the future I can make a short video of the process. From this fused material, I then die-cut patterned shapes using two Sizzix dies. One is the thinlit, Heart Mandala (665587), the other is an old steel-rule die called "Vintage Doily" (657420). They are adhered to the back of the hoops with glue. For added embellishing, I die-cut pieces from felt using a simple leaf shape and cutting along the sides to give it the look of feathers. These are then attached to hang from the bottom of the dream catcher.

NOTE: There are numerous ideas online for ideas for making these in a variety of different ways, and instructions to string them the traditional way.

Dream Catcher - (Found this explanation online.) "Native Americans believe that the night air is filled with dreams, both good and bad. The dream catcher, when hung over or near your bed, swinging freely in the air, catches the dreams as they flow by. The good dreams know how to pass through the dream catcher, slipping through the holes and slide down the feathers so gently that the sleeper does not know they are dreaming. The bad dreams, not knowing the way, get tangled in the dream catcher and perish with the light of a new day."

New Year, New Release of New Dies (Sort of) with Loads of Inspiration

Eileen Hull Designs has a new release of dies to share. Actually it is a te-release of some vintage dies. Here are images of the dies. I was a fan of these dies the first time around. One in particular as has been a very favorite of mine, more about that to come.

The cantilever sewing box brings back memories for me too because my mother also had a larger wooden version! The embroidery hoop die replicates actual hoops and can be used for many projects. The needle case die happens to be one of my favorites and have used this die so many times for various projects. Those that have seen my projects may notice that this one is the base for many of my banners.

For this latest release I made this version of the cantilever sewing box. Added some decorations to the top, using the flowers and leaves cut from felt and wool.

This made me decide to use the same extra thinlit dies for the embroidery hoop and the needle case for a trio of coordinating projects.

There are three more ideas to share with everyone.

The small tab bound book using the needle case die for the covers and pages.

The “love” wreath uses the inner circle from the embroidery hoop (three to four layered together), with leaves of cut from felt and paper, then applied around the circle. Add some small felt flowers and a clear plastic circle with the word LOVE and a ribbon to complete the hanger.

The last of course is another idea for a banner. The needle case die is cut from layered foil that was cut and embossed with the Mandela 3D folder. These are fashioned into pockets to hold paper heart flowers in three sizes with added felt leaves and a couple of other die cut greens.

Halloween Treats Without The Calories

Had some fun with creating a few new handmade (non-caloric type) treats for Halloween again this year. With the projects completed I figured it was time to do some sharing, so I went back and found some previous makes and decided to make a post of all Halloween related ideas!

Following the Christmas in July theme for the release of this collection, I created a holder as an organizer for a variety of items.

A fabric covered caddy box was first made. Next came an insert to separate the items it would hold, using the card caddy panel shaped thinlit and the bookbinding die to fit the inside of the card caddy box.

With the finished container and dividers complete the fun began. Some mini slimline cards were created using some of the new die sets. Using the Everyday Tags & Label set, tags for packages were made. Some holiday recipes can be kept on file with little house tabs attached to help remove them when baking begins. Shown are a simple white cards and a version made with decorative papers. (Use a decorative paper with a white side to either write of attach a print recipe copy.)

The Starlit Village die, cut from white card stock and pieced together make simple candle rings for a holiday table setting or other places to decorate.

The final projects are a few ways the Everyday Tags & Labels can create some small banners to use a variety of ways for the holidays. Hang them on the Christmas tree, in a window, on a mirror, on a door, from a shelf, use as a package decoration ... what all ways can YOU find?

New Ideas To Share With Chapter 2 Dies

With the release of the new chapter 2 dies by Eileen Hull Designs from Sizzix just a couple of weeks ago, I have continued to have fun with finding more ways to use them.

On the day of the release I shared with the "live" audience two projects that I created for the purpose of sharing that day. All other projects were sent off to Eileen before the release to share at the Name/Creativation show in Columbus, Ohio that she was attending.

I'll share the two projects here but will be including the instructions for making the little banner, Three Pocket Posey Holder. The pockets are so easy to make! It's what you put inside that may take up your time if you decide to all "handmade"! You can also go the easy way and use purchased flowers and greens.

When I work on new projects my first thought usually is what material will I use! When it comes to making any banners I like to use varied materials. Many times I will include both paper and fabric. For the project here I'll show both a paper version and a fabric/paper version.

Materials

Fabric/Paper (for pockets)

Sculpting Foam, Paper, Felt (for flowers and greenery)

Envelope, Journaling Card & Window Die

Various Sizes dies for flowers and greenery

Glue

TIny stapler

Cording or ribbon for stringing banners

Fusible (such as Pellon Steam a Seam or Thermo Web Heat n Bond)

Iron

Pressing board

Purchased greenery (optional)

***The process for using either paper or fabric for the envelope pockets, to create a banner are the same in the construction, as are the making of the flowers and greenery. When using fabric I will use either Heat n Bond Lite by Thermoweb or Steam a Seam by Pellon. Both are a fusible and sewable. NOTE: ALWAYS check if a fusible can be machine sewn, otherwise you can gum up the sewing machine if sewing is included!

The fusing process:

Cut fabric, paper and fusible the same size. (Approimately 6" 9")
Cut enough of the 3 layers for each envelope pocket that you want for the banner.
Set iron at the temperature suggested in the instructions for the fusible used

Remove the backing paper from one side of the Steam a Seam fusible OR lay the fusible side of the Heat n Bond down on the wrong side of the fabric. Press the fusible onto the fabric piece. (following product recommendations).

Allow to cool before proceeding.

Remove the backing paper, align the fabric fused piece to the paper (or another piece of fabric, if desired).

Press the layers together to fuse.

Die cut the envelope from each fused, layered piece.

Three Fused Layers (fabric. fusible, paper)

Create the envelopes by folding the top flap down to the inside.
Run a bead of glue along the "V' shape of the flap. Press in place. NOTE: Don't add glue to the whole flap. Leave an opening to thread cord or ribbon through the envelope tops for stringing the together.
Glue the small flaps on each side of the bottom in.
WIth a small stapler, staple at each tp, side of the lower flap. NOTE: Refer to photo. A small paper brad could also be used or a small amount of glue.

Finishing:

Cut flower and greenery with deisred dies, from papers or other materials.
Arrange the die cut pieces into the banner envelope pockets and glue them into place. NOTE: I crinkled up a small piece of tissue paper and placed it into the lower pocket for added dimension before placing the greenery and flowers
Add something of your choice to string the pockets together.

The Card Case is a Bigz XL ScoreBoards die. This die is specially designed to cut and score thick material up to 1/16" like matboard, chipboard, leather, felt and fabric so your finished project is nice and sturdy. The finished Card Case die measures 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" and has an adjustable spine that goes from 1/2" to 2 1/2". This is the perfect size journal to hold your 3" x 4" journaling cards, as well as other small items like wallet photos, ATCs and ephemera. There is a swing out flap on each side where you can add pockets or small insert books- you decide what combination you want to do. Make the spine thick or thin- your choice!

The projects below ae made from various materials that I enjoy incorporating in most projects I make with Eileen's dies. Though paper is a wonderful material to use, I guess the challenge of what other materials can do is something I enjoy!  These projects use other dies for embellishments and other purposes from collections of Eileens's and others from Sizzix. They co-ordinate well and show the versatility of Sizzix dies.

The Journaling Card, Envelope & Windows die has 6 pieces- an envelope, 3" x 4" Journaling Card, three window cutouts (use with envelope to remove and back with glassine like a window envelope) and a tab. The Mini-Slimline & Tickets die design is similar to the Snail Mail die, which was very popular for creating faux postage stamps. There are four dies in the set- one is the size of a mini slimline card and one is a mat that may be placed behind the perforated piece. The other two pieces are a row of tickers and mat that goes behind that. When you fold over each perforated piece and tear it, it creates individual faux postage stamps and tickets! Die cut the piece from patterned paper for an amazing background- just add a sentiment and let the paper do the work.

This month one the Eileen Hull Blog the subject has been "Wordsoup, Tags & Pockets". With the release of the Chapter 1 collection from Sizzix this topic lends itself well.

Anyone journaling knows the first aspect of this process, of course is using words to express yourself.

The other components from the collection also add the ways to express with "words".

Projects that I made using this Chapter 1 collection designed by Eileen, can for the most part, fit this subject. Here are some images of how "words, tags and pockets" speak out!

The first project with the Chapter 1 Frame Pocket Journal contains two pockets on the inside that hold to accordian style booklets made with the Library Pocket thinlit die that holds ATC cards made to be tags. On the back of the book and extra pocket is made using the flap to hold more tags.

For another project the Frame Pocket Journal makes a smaller book, by cutting one cover and cutting it in half. A few Library Pockets were made that hold some tiny tags and inserts to the inside.

***Make simple tags using any dies available cut from neutral colors or patterned papers and add words or quotes either hand printed or in any other form to the tags. Use the letters from the Alphanumeric thinlit die to spell out words too!

A PROJECT IN THE WORKS

After creating these projects I was inspired to try making another. It is not completed as yet, and I apologize for that, but thought I would at least share the process of my plan.

The plan is to create several Library Pockets using various papers and maybe some other types of materials. Then create ATC cards for each, that will hold a card with a word or quote for the pockets. They will contained in a box that can be made with either the Gift Box die or the bottom portion of the Treasure Box die. The collection would be a box of inspirational, meaningful words and quotes.

So I got to collectiong materials for the box, the pockets and cards.

The container was made from the Treasure Box die. I added fabric to one side of the mat boards (this will be the fronts), and a neutral paper to the opposite side (this will be the inside), before die-cutting the the pieces.

After cutting, the box is assembled. The edges of the box were painted carefully with white paint. All the edges of the box and the fabric were lightly distressed with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

Using the LIbrary Pocket and ATC Card thinlit die, I cut 24 sets from a variety of decorative papers for the pockets and used manila folders for the insert cards. NOTE: The Treasure Box can likely hold up to 36 or more pockets and cards.

I used scraps from the leftover papers to add some embellishments to the cards.

Once all the cards are complete with some background decorations, more layering can happen. I'm planning on using torn bits from old dictionary pages with definitions or images that correlate to the words chosen for each ATC.

Ideas: Add either handwritten, typed or ready-made verses or words to each card. On the back side of each card add meanings or thoughts or other expressions for each verse or word used.

The box needs a few more decorative embellishments to finish its look. Once the entire project is complete i will be happy to share the finished piece.

New Year, New Ideas with New Releases

There's a saying ... "better late then never" ... so this may be late but I will be sharing one project that is complete with the newest releases by Eileen Hull for Sizzix.

Chapter 1 brings a new scoreboard die with many cuts that can be used in several ways, even on their own or with other previous dies. Versatility is one of the features I enjoy with these projects.

For this first completed project I was determined to just all of the new elements from this chapter release and feel like I acomplisheed that.

It all began with the new Scoreboard Plus die, Frame Pocket Journal. Mat board was covered with Sizzix cork paper on one side and a patterned paper on the other.

Two cover pieces and two flaps were cut to construct the Pocket Journal. One flap becomes the front, closing flap; the other flap becomes a pocket on the back of the journal to hold a variety of tags. On the front flap a line of adhesive flat pearls trim the edge. From a solid color card stock, perforated square letters are cut using the new Tiled Alphanumeric (666043) thinlit die to spell out a title. Each of the tiles is backed with a small square of leftover embossed metallic paper for some color and adhered to the lower front as a title.

A couple of pieces of the cork roll were also embossed with the new Tablecloth 3-D folder. The top of each pieces was colored with some ink and some Luster Wax to bring out the impressions. They were cut to fit the top and bottom of the journal and adhered into place. A button is attached to the top for part of the closure. A length of elastic is colored with ink and added to the bottom through the middle hole and knotted for the closure.

For the inside of the journal two pockets are cut from mat board covered with metallic card stock in two coordinating colors. Each of these metallic covered pockets were embossed with the 3-D, Tablecloth (666154) textured impression folder. Then construct the pockets and adhere into place inside the journal.

Two fold-outs from a vellum type paper are added next to each pocket.

Using the Library Pocket ATC Card & Tabs (666151)new thinlit dies, two accordian style books were created to fit into the 2 inside pockets.

Cut six library pockets from a double-sided card stock. Construct the library pockets. Cut 10 of the straight sided tabs to hinge the library pockets together. Repeat to create a second accordian book with other coordinating paper.

Cut ATC cards from coordinating card stock for each pocket (Cut 12). Cut 12 rounded tabs for each of the ATC cards. The tabs are cut from cork paper. Each is attached to the ATC cards with tiny staples. These can be adhered in an fashion. Tags can be cut from prepared card stock or individually made. Punch a hole at the top of each and add a bit of ribbon.

Use the ideas above to create themed journals for someone special or a special occasion. With this project, all but one of the new elements from this new Chapter 1 release was used in its creation.

Top Three Picks Of The Year

To end the year 2022 with the task of choosing my three favorites of projects, made with the Eileen Hull Designs designs ... the questions is HOW? My answer ... not easy!

Looking through photos of the projects I found that it wasn't always the projets that made it stand out to me but in many cases it was the process. For me, at least, it an also be about the material chosen and/or the process used to end up happy with the finished project!

Starting out with a fabulous base design can to the success and that's what we get with the designs from Eileen!

This year gave us wonderful bases to work with. There is the Geometric Box, the Sunflower Skinny Mini Book Box, the Skinny Mini elements thinlit, the Card Caddy, the Shadowbox Frame set and elements, the Book Box die, the Snail Mail thinlit and embossing folders with each chapter release.

What I enjoyed most is the using them all together in a number of different ways. Also trying various materials to create interesting projects with these 2022 designs.

The three picks I made are these. The first is a white-on-white container made with the Geometric Box.

The second is a fabric covered journal made with the Book Box die. Fabric was printed using a gel plate.

The third was was a triple dimension scene with the Shadow Box frame die and other Sizzix dies.

Some of the other projects created with the 2022 Eileen HullSizzix dies through the year.

Comfort & Joy 2022 Gift Idea

Give some comfort & joy! Little handmade gifts given in a handcrafted gift box can make an impact. Here's a little idea for the makers out there.

Using Eileen Hull's Gift Box scoreboard die from Sizzix will create the nicest square box to hold many small gifts. Here is the box made with festive holiday papers. It will hold a pair of handmade flannel hand warmers. The box also has its own little handle on top for opening. It is fashioned from the label shape that is part of the die.

Select papers for covering the mat board.

Adhere the decorative papers, using double-sided adhesive, to the mat board.

Die-cut the pieces for the gift box from the covered mat boards. Construct the box.

MATERIALS

Decorative Papers, 2 sheets

Double-sided adhesive

Flannel fabric

Muslin fabric

Seeing machine

Thread, to match

White rice

Raffia

Seam binding

Distress stain

Paper brads

Cover 2 sheets of mat board with the decorative papers on each side of the board using double-sided adhesive

Die cut 2 panels for making the gift box

Cut out label from from the same die

Construct the gift box

Fold over the front flap to tuck under to the inside top of box,

Glue the scallop folded flap to the front edge of box at opening flap.

Create a handle from the label piece, by scoring a fold line.

Pierce holes for paper brads in the folded over ends of the label.

Using a small curved bottle or tube to add a curve to the middle section of the mat board label.

Center the handle onto the top of the gift box and pierce holes through the holes on the label handle, through the top of the gift box.

Add the handle by applying a small amount of glue near the holes and then affixing the handle in place with the paper brads.

Spray a length of seam binding with desired color of distress stain. Scrunch the binding leave to dry.

Create a small bow; glue into the edge of the top handle.

INFORMATION TO MAKE HAND WARMERS

Cut four pieces flannel to measure 4” x 4” squares.

Cut four pieces of muslin to measure 3 3/4” x 3 3/4” squares.

Stitch around the muslin squares with a scant 1/4” seam. Leave a space open on one side about 1 1/2” in length. Leave as is or turn the square inside out.

Fill the muslin, stitched squares with white rice. Do Not over fill.

Hand stitch the opening closed.

Stitch around the flannel squares the same as the muslin squares, but leave one side completely open.

Insert the rice filled squares into the flannel

NOTE: These instructions are given as a guide. Nothing is "written in stone"! There is information to be found online for many ideas to make hand warmers.

VERY IMPORTANT

Hand warmers will be briefly heated in the microwave before using.
Do not use sparkly or shimmery fabrics or thread.
Be sure that your chosen fabric and thread are made from 100% COTTON, and no way metallic in nature.
Synthetic fibers can catch fire with repeated heating in the microwave.

To use the hand warmers: Heat them in the microwave for 20 to 30 seconds. Depending on the wattage of the microwave will determine the time. (Example- for a 950 watt microwave, heat the hand warmers for 30 seconds at full power.)

Double Geometric Cork Basket

The newest Chapter 4 release from Eileen Hull for Sizzix included the Geometric Box. We’ve been seeing and sharing wonderful ideas with the unique design. I chose to share, as a blog post this month, another version of a sample I created for the release.

I wanted to share this idea with others. I didn’t want the box to be rigid as it would be but using mat board. Still needed a base that would cut well and fold easily along the score lines. Using a heavyweight watercolor paper between two sheets of decorative card stock gave the box flexibility and the sturdiness I had hope for.

When making this double basket I was able to include the use of of cork sheets by Sizzix as the top layer of the geometric boxes.

MATERIALS

Big Shot machine
Geometric Box die
Watercolor paper, 140#
Sizzix Cork roll
Decorative card stock
Double-sided adhesive sheets
Mat board, small square
Glue
Sizzix thinlit dies
Distress ink
Cosmetic sponge
White gel pen (optional)
Cord, for handle (optional)

THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THE BOXES

Choose a decor paper for outer layers.
Cover both sides of the watercolor paper with double sided adhesive.

Cover 2 squares of mat board with cork and decorative paper and double sided adhesive.
Remove liner paper and layer cork to one side of watercolor paper.
Remove liner paper on other side and layer with the decorative paper.
Die-cut 4 box pieces of the layered papers NOTE: These will create 2 boxes.

Cut two box bottoms from cork covered mat board.

Fold all the box pieces on the score lines.
Remove a thin layer of the paper from the joining edges of each piece.
Glue two of the box pieces together to form the box.

Complete the second box.
Glue the bottoms into the boxes.
Align the boxes next to each other.

Matching the point of the triangle and the straight edge of the bottom together.
Apply glue to one of the boxes and press the other to it to attach them together. NOTE: Double sided tape could also be used to attach them together but align them carefully

EMBELLISH THE BOXES AS DESIRED

I chose to ink along the edges of the top and bottom of the pieces and also along the angled folds.
I die-cut some shapes using thinlits from the cork sheet.
Glue the cut designs onto 6 of the boxes triangles
Lightly add some color onto the thinlit designs with a paint brush with your choice of coloring. NOTE: These shapes can be colored before adhering to box.

Optional - Use a white gel pen to create dashes around the triangles

Thread jute cord through holes punched into the sides and knotted for a handle

Cards For The "Spooky" Season

Sharing some card making with the help of Eileen Hull's new Skinny Mini Card Box and other Sizzix tools.

Two card boxes are made using mat board covered on both side with coordinating, decorative card stock. Handmade cards and envelopes are made for each box. This new box is the perfect size for holding mini slim style cards. Four seasonal cards, with envelopes are made for each box. NOTE: The box can likely hold 4 to 6 cards with envelopes.

TIP: Make sets of cards for different seasons or occasions. Add the handmade cards in a a lovely Skinny Mini box to match the occasion. These would be a great idea for gift giving.

Cut all the papers for each card.
Use a scoreboard and bone folder for adding the center fold to each card.
For layered papers, some ideas are to trim the edges of the layers with decorative scissors, tear the edges or machine stitch around the edges.

Stamped images
Buttons
Ribbons

When creating card fronts on any size card, feel free to use a variety of materials for adding layers and interest. Here are some ideas:

Extra Space Storage Caddy

One of the newest dies designed by Eileen Hull for the latest Chapter 3 collection is one called the Card Caddy. It is a scoreboard die that, makes it possible to create substantial holders with many purposes. Here is a version with extra storage to be used on a desk or craft table.

The very first project I created was a mail caddy. It’s constructed by making three caddies and connecting them together. The design of this die is open to many combinations for books, albums and various holders.

The project for this post uses my original idea but taken to an expanded look.

By connecting finished caddies together, you are able to configure some lovely decorative containers for many different storage needs. Make them to fit you color scheme for a crafting area. The side pieces that close the caddy sides, can be used to make dividers; add one or more or none. A handle can easily be added for carrying if desired.

Let the making begin...

It all starts with choosing papers for covering the mat board.
Cover each side of the mat board with coordinated papers of choice with double sided adhesive. (NOTE: it is possible to cover the mat board with papers or using napkins and collage medium. This process may cause the mat board to warp but it can be straightened by pressing between parchment paper and heavy books.)

Cover 5 pieces of mat board for each of the 5 caddies. One extra piece of mat board may be needed for the side pieces for each caddy, or extra dividers if desired.
Die-cut the caddy shape and sides from covered mat boards.

Construct the caddy boxes, adding the two sides to each. (NOTE: Some of the paper layers on the tabs can be carefully removed, if desired.)

Complete the construction of FIVE caddies. (NOTE: three for the center section, two more that will be the end caddies on each side.)

Finishing the storage caddy

Add twisted wire handles, if desired.

Add embellishments of choice, such as fibers, ribbon, trims, flowers, etc.
Add feet to the bottom corners, if desired.

IDEAS:

Instead of covering the mat board with decorative papers on each side, try napkin collage, old magazine page collage, painted mat boards with stencil designs, texture paint on the outside facing side, gel print the boards, fabric cover the boards boards on one side. Cover one side of mat boards with vinyl contact sheets to give a protective surface to the inner side of the caddy boxes.

The width of one finished caddy is slightly wider then the width of three caddies glued together. When connecting them, as in the project shown, then extra width is not really noticeable because of the embellishments wrapped around the entire piece, if desired, trim a scant 1/8” from each side of the die-cut piece before creating the caddy box.

Time To Travel Is Anytime

Summertime usually means travel time, but it happens everyday throughout the year for different reasons. Here in this post I'm sharing an easy project to have on hand either for the car, a RV or to keep in a travel bag.

In all the examples here, each book contains notebooks for keeping track of any variety of information and holders for receipts or various items needed while traveling or on the road, either near home or away.

For all the examples here and others I have made in the past for a few of my traveling friends, I like to use images of maps. Either use found maps from resale shops, or pages from old road atlas's. I have also printed out copies of map images to use for covering books.

Any of the book dies, old or new, that are from Eileen Hull's collection by Sizzix make wonderful travel companions.

The main purpose of the book featured, was to have something on hand in my car. By using the Pocket Notebook (#663638), the size makes it easy for storing in the glove compartment of a car or for slipping it into a side door pocket for easy access.

Insert for any of these can either be made or small notebooks or pads can be found at various outlets around or online.

Folder envelopes can be fashioned as inserts also. NOTE: I made a simple folder from two small envelopes. I covered the envelopes with clear contact paper to give them some strength and protection. If the folder becomes tattered, make another and replace or add more.

Book Inserts

These two travel books were created for my granddaughters. Each year, after the school is over, they have been lucky to go traveling with their parents for a week. These were made for the summer they went on a two week trip, by car to several places West. They contained pages for writing and pages for drawing, along with places to slip small finds and keepsakes of their travels.

I made similar journals for friends who went on a trip overseas, using maps of the countries they were traveling to.

Leftover/Unused Die-cuts Become Something New

There are several unused die cut pieces that I keep handy in a container as well as an array of unfinished and unused embellishments.

Since the majority of elements for the vintage truck and the camper (minus just a couple) were available in my stash, plus with the 4th of July only a few weeks away, I felt it called for some new summer holiday decor.

The basic main, precut pieces were were painted either with red paint and blue paint. All tires were painted black. The hub caps, the camper door and window were colored by rubbing them with silver Luster wax. The lower decorative strip on the camper is covered with metal tape.

Once the truck and camper were constructed, a piece of styrofoam was cut to place into the open area of each piece. Several star shapes were die cut from gold card stock. A toothpick was glued between two star shapes and they were used to fill the truck, along with several paper flags. A large leftover rosette from an older project was glued to a popsicle stick and placed into the styrofoam inside the camper. The missing pieces were the hitch element, so I found a way to attach the ring element from the folio die to both the truck and camper. A screw fits into the small end on the one on the back of the truck; while a small elastic band, attached to campper piece can be connected over the screw to hold the two larger pieces together.

With this post I will share sample ideas and some learned tips since working with them, but not typical instructions and steps. As with anything new, be it ideas or tools, there is a "learning curve". That being said fit’s been enjoyable and a bit addictive working with the new dies.

The important part to note is that they are constructed from heavy weight papers and not mat board. I have been doing some experimenting with various types of papers to construct the frames and sure that more will continue.

The first project that I created with the frames were three graduated sized squares to hold dimensional arrangements. The ideas for dimensional designs or arrangements are endless. Stay simple by matting photos into the frames for displaying in groups, or get creative with dimensional creations. The basic frames were made from watercolor paper and then collaged with old dictionary pages. This process came with some learning and tips to share.

The next project was to use them to assemble a hinged, fold out photo display. This can be kept simple too with just photos or add a bit of dimension into the frames. More ideas using similar construction are in the works now.

While working with these thinlit dies and assembling the frames, I have learned a few tips that I would like to share. NOTE: We may all interpret directions slightly different, and find our very own methods that may differ somewhat from actual directions. Find what works for you! Remember the learning never stops!

I feel one of the first thing really needed when constructing the frames, of any size, should be to understand the weights of different papers. I’ve used different weights, from 90# to 140# for most of the frames. These weights are considered heavy weight papers. A few papers that would be good to use are:

Sizzix papers (approximately 90#)

Bazzill papers (approximately 100#)

Distress watercolor card stock (118#)

Distress heavy stock (110#)

Watercolor papers by various companies (90# to 140#) found at craft or art supply stores

For the frames I have created so far, I have used papers from 65# to 140#.

I have also experimented with thin paper board like white poster board sheets from craft stores and gift boxes and cereal/cracker boxes. Materials like this would probably be considered as extra heavy weight. I likely wouldn’t use anything heavier then the cereal boxes. Of course if using such materials they would have to be covered by either painting, inks, mixed media finishes or with collaged papers. NOTE: Another tip that may be helpful - if using something extra heavy - after cutting the four pieces, it may help the folding by going over the score lines again using a scoreboard and scoring tool. I found this step useful.

When using a paper with a patterned design, I have found it necessary to be aware of the direction of the design before cutting the four pieces needed to make the frames. An all over design can be cut without a worry. There are designs were we immediately know the pattern direction and others that may not be as easy to notice. Here are some examples and how to cut the four frame pieces:

Another experiment was with embossing the papers before constructing the frames. Here again some experimenting took place. I found better results when using embossing folders that are not the 3D, thicker folders. It seemed to me that they distorted the paper pieces making them difficult to fold properly. The folding lines do disappear from the deep embossing; you can replace them with a score board and bone folder. Give it a try and see what results you may have. I cut the four pieces needed for the frames before embossing. Also the coloring (by ink or paint) was added before the embossing. NOTE: Highlights can be added after embossing if desired. Use inks, dry brush paint or metallic rubs.

Again remember that frames may be made from plain papers or file folders or gift boxes/cereal boxes can be painted or use texture paints alone or with stencils to add design or texture to the frames. Collage with bits of thin papers and gel medium. Gesso was added to any packaging with printed designs before decorating with any method desired.

***The next thing that I will be experimenting with is making different size frames by slightly changing the measurements of the frame pieces. That can be accomplished by trimming from the straight edge of the four cut frame pieces. ***

STILL TO COME ... Two ideas still in the works will combine the Book Box die with a frame and the other will use the Folio Journal with two frames.

New Eileen Hull die release today! New in more ways then the release date. These dies are all thinlit dies and along with the three sets of dies is a beautiful 3D embossing folder.

I was excited to work have the opportunity to work with these new designs. Once seeing the process of constructing the frames, the challenge of the creative element of the making process went into affect. Today I will share the set of three shadow box frames and an accordion-style three-dimensional display frame that can sit on any shelf. At a later date the making process will be shared for these projects.

A trio of three-dimensionsal frames were made from heavy stock paper for both of the shadow box projects. I found that using a 120# watercolor paper worked well for both. Each of the three square frames were collaged with torn dictionary pages and aged with inks before being given a clear coat of varnish. Fill with any variety of embellishments to fill the frames. A ribbon hanger was added for hanging. Each is backed with a piece of burlap paper for a neat finish.

Another project to share with you is this accordian style three-dimensional frame I enjoyed creating. Made with three of small shadow box frames, they connect with hinges so the frames can unfold and are decorated on both sides. It can sit nicely on a shelf or table.
