AVG Free provides the bare necessities when it comes to security, but that should be enough for savvy Windows users. You'll get a combined antivirus and antimalware engine, LinkScanner, and e-mail scanning. AVG Free 9 introduces a few new features, with improvements focused on performance, including claims of faster scan and boot times. One new feature is the Identity Theft Recovery Unit. Only for users in the United States, ITRU is a business partnership with Identity Guard which provides "consumer identity theft solutions," accessible only from the AVG toolbar in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The interface is nearly unchanged from the last version, and generally it's easy to use. From the main window, though, you must double-click to get further information on any feature, whether virus scanning, LinkScanner settings, or updating. Streamlining this to one click would be helpful. A scheduling utility automates both scans and updates, while the upgrade ad at the screen's bottom can be easily hidden using the Hide Notification button. When starting a scan, a slider makes it easy to jump between Slow, Automatic, and Fast scans: the faster the scan, the less comprehensive it is, so users should take advantage of the scan optimization that is recommended during installation to speed up that first scan. A progress meter for regular scans would've been useful, though. Should a virus create serious problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode.
The LinkScanner feature protects you from third-party code exploits before they load in your browser and for ranking search results. Annoyingly, when you install its optional toolbar, it commandeers your new-tab page, decidedly inappropriate behavior. The program doesn't obviously tax your system when scanning or when running in the background, although CNET Labs determined that it will significantly slow down your system's boot time, and slightly delay shutting down. AVG also detected some image files as threats, when two other scans decided they weren't--we decided these were false positives. AVG might not be the fastest or the most effective free security option, but it still gets the job done and you're better off with it.

Why use Anti-Virus ?

This is a really simple question to answer – you need to use antivirus software to protect your own computer, and to prevent your computer from being used to pass on infections to other machines without your knowledge. If you use the internet and you don’t take precautions, you’re going to get infected. And you’ll infect others, including those you care about most like your friends, family, and business contacts because their information is in your email address book and other files on your computer.
If you don’t care about infecting others, let’s look at the economic argument for a moment. You have a computer that must have cost at least $600, and perhaps as much as $4,000. On top of that you’ll have a monitor for which you paid between $250 and $1000, and you’re running software costing at least $500 dollars. If you have business or specialist packages installed then I’m guessing you may have invested $5000 in software alone. You will probably pay upwards of 25 dollars a month for your internet connection. And if you store personal data on your PC, it is probably worth more than money to you.

So you’ve got equipment worth something like $1400 if you’re computing on the cheap, right up to (and beyond) $10,000 if you flex your wallet a little. Think of this as being the same in price as an acceptable older used car right up to the pretty good used car you could buy for ten thousand dollars.
Now imagine that the car had all the locks removed and could be started without a key – and of course you could paint “STEAL ME” on it for good measure. That makes a lot of sense..yea right!
Having a computer that does not have up-to-date antivirus and firewall protection is pretty much exactly the same. You are simply asking for trouble!

This kind of trouble doesn’t need to be invited twice, because viruses, worms, Trojans and all the rest, are designed to find unprotected computers and attack them. They don’t seek out protected computers! If they find one, they simply move on.

Remember, computer viruses are designed, they don’t just happen by accident. Because human intelligence is behind the viruses they develop quickly, use surprising and unexpected tactics, and they hit us where we are weakest.

So if you can afford over $1500 on a computer and $300 a year on internet connections, you can definitely afford another $50 to make your computer safe (and prevent it from being used to spread viruses and Trojan horses behind your back).
If you’re not convinced about the cost argument, consider the case of David L. Smith - the self-confessed author of the infamous Melissa worm. When he was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment and a fine of $5,000 in New Jersey, the court adjudged Smith's worm to have caused more than £55 million pounds worth of damage!

Against the cost we stand to lose, the risk of losing our priceless personal files, and being blamed by friends and relatives for infecting their machines, the top antivirus software programs cost as little as 2 months internet connection. They all include constant and unlimited automatic updates that keep your system safe and clean.
And if you weren’t convinced by the good citizen argument that you should protect your computer to stop others getting infected, then it might be worth mentioning that there is a movement to make people not using antivirus software legally responsible should their machine be used as part of an attack (even if they did not know about it).

(Note: I’m not personally a part of such a movement, but it does have its merits!)
So, be a good citizen whilst protecting your wallet and your sanity by installing good antivirus software and keeping it up to date.

The good: Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware 2010 offers basic antivirus and antispyware protection.

The bad: This stripped-down program from Trend Micro lacks many of the bells and whistles that made its siblings worth considering.

The bottom line: Going by older detection and removal numbers, Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware offers competent if basic security protection. However, so do many free competitors. This year, we recommend giving Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware 2010 a pass.

If you're looking for a robust feature set from your security suite, and you're looking for an affordable price, you could do worse than Trend Micro's 2010 Internet Security and Internet Security Pro. However, this basic version offers the bare minimum of protection, even with decent performance benchmarks. This is problematic because the feature set is Trend Micro strength, but to get it you've got to pay for the Pro version.

Trend Micro claims that boot times are 20 percent faster, that the programs use 40 percent less RAM, that the download itself is 25 percent smaller, and that the quick scan on Windows Vista and Windows XP is 20 percent faster.

Installation
The Trend Micro installation process is about as smooth and pain-free as one can expect for a program that will have such deep hooks into your system. It will detect and ask for approval to remove other antivirus programs that are installed on your machine, but it doesn't require a reboot after it's done--something most of its competitors do.

One thing that Trend Micro fails to do effectively is call out its behavioral engine. There is a box you can check at installation to opt out of the behavioral program, but there's no detailed or clear explanation of what it is or what it does. On the one hand, the technology that allows the publisher to leverage supposedly anonymous data from its customers to catch surreptitiously-running threats faster isn't brand new. It's been around for a few years, although this year more security suites are adopting it. On the other hand, companies like Trend Micro must consider whether users will panic if it is mentioned clearly and then disable their computers from contributing data to the cloud.

As long as the data is truly kept anonymous, then it can be an exceptional tool for preventing malware. But in Trend Micro's installation process, it looks like nothing more than another box and line item to read before installing, and perhaps could benefit from a more detailed explanation.

A customized installation process is available for users who wish to configure program location and tweak components. Trend Micro will also run a virus check once it's done installing, and will automatically update its definition files.

Interface and features
Trend Micro's 2010 interface has been further refined from the previous year's version, with less dead space and more emphasis on both your security status and ease of access to security tools. The program launches into its Overview tab, which highlights your security status with a large colored icon: green for protected, and red for unprotected. Below that, there are links to your protection status, your license information, and a security report.

Each of these links drills down to essential information, exposing them in an elegant and uncluttered manner on the main page. The Protection Status link opens a window that details the status of your virus definition files, updates, firewall, unauthorized change prevention, spam filter, parental controls, and data theft prevention. Each of these has a green "on" or red "off" status icon, with a hidden explanation of each that can be exposed by clicking on it. Unfortunately, there's no way to get from the list to the deeper actual controls for each--it's simply for toggling the status.

Also on the Overview tab are two buttons, one for activating a scan and one for manually updating your definition files. The scan button defaults to a Quick Scan, although it has a drop-down menu on the right side that lets you choose a Full Scan or a Custom Scan. Scanning opens the scan window, which details which threats it's looking for, which files it's scanning, live results, and options to run in the background or shut down the computer after the scan is finished. Depending on how you set up the program, it will either automatically fix any threats found or ask for your input. If you choose to autofix, it will still show you a window after the scan is complete, detailing what action was taken, and the threat links to more detailed information on Trend Micro's site.

The Virus and Spyware Controls tab offers four drop-down menus. The first checks for real-time viruses and spyware when you download files, leveraging the aforementioned behavioral heuristics. It can be toggled with an on/off button, and it offers a configuration menu with a secondary, advanced features window, and a whitelist/blacklist link that also allows for cookie control. Despite what sounds like a confusing series of submenus, in practice it was easy to navigate.

The Prevent Unauthorized Changes drop-down menu offers more granular control of installations. This is where you would manage program that Trend Micro doesn't recognize, with the same on/off toggle and links to settings and exceptions. The next tab is for configuring scheduled scans and custom scans. It's frustrating that such a key feature is buried deep in the interface, especially since most users are still wary of holes in real-time protection. This scheduler only controls scan schedules; it doesn't offer update scheduling. There's another scheduler for that, in another part of the program. Below the scheduler is the Quarantine, which helpfully categorizes the quarantined files as viruses, spyware, and Trojans.

The Other Settings tab offers more information on your Trend Micro subscription, Automatic Updates and a definition file scheduler, toggling the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network, which controls the behavioral information your computer submits, security warning pop-up controls, password protection to keep Trend Micro from being used by others, and logs access. The interface scheme, with a drop-down simple sentence explaining what a feature does and links to dig down for more settings, sort of backfires here. Most of the options in this tab only contain one settings link, meaning that what should take one click takes two.

Frustratingly, the update scheduler can't be set to check for updates more often than once an hour.

Features included only in the pro version are protection for mobile phones; the Trend Micro toolbar, which installs on Internet Explorer and Firefox; a system tuner for recovering disk space and defragmenting your drives; and a password-protected vault that seals if your computer is stolen and accessed. The mobile protection is available only for Symbian and Windows Mobile phones, and, because of the variation of models, requires configuring a download for your specific model. Mobile threats are growing, so being able to prevent browser-based attacks on your mobile for the same cost of protecting your PC might appeal to some users.

Performance
Although there were no problems navigating within Trend Micro and there were no noticeable slowdowns to the naked eye, certain Trend Micro performance hang-ups did appear. For one, the suite had a difficult time respecting the default browser setting on my Windows 7 laptop. Sometimes it would open internal program links into Firefox, my set default, but more often it would open them into Internet Explorer. These links, opening in either browser, took much longer to load. It wasn't clear whether this lag was because of the main suite or the Trend Micro toolbar scanning them before launching.

CNET Labs' benchmarks reveal that all three of Trend Micro's 2010 products had an uneven impact on computer performance. Trend Micro Internet Security Pro and Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware slowed boot time by 4 seconds, while Trend Micro Internet Security only affected boot time by 1.5 seconds. The Pro version also dramatically slowed down shutdown performance, by nearly 8 seconds, while the basic AntiVirus dragged on the shutdown cycle by less than a second, and Internet Security added 1.65 seconds.

The benchmark of Trend Micro's full scan was quite slow, with the Internet Security Pro and AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware products taking 19 minutes, and the standard Internet Security taking 20 minutes. The nonbenchmarked quick scan compared favorably with industry standards, coming in at 53 seconds. The full scan took an average amount of time, at 1 hour and 28 minutes. Besides potential hardware conflicts, keep in mind that these differences can often be attributed to the generally clean state of the benchmarking computer's hard drive, versus the number of programs and files that reside on a real-world machine.

Trend Micro's results were also uneven on processor-intensive tests. On MS Office tests, the Pro suite was again the slowest, followed by the stripped-down AntiVirus. The basic suite, Trend Micro Internet Security, was the fastest of the three, running an average of 18 seconds slower than an unprotected computer. This pattern repeated with our Cinebench tests. However, in iTunes decoding tests all three notched nearly identical scores, and in the multimedia test the basic AntiVirus was faster than its two siblings by 20 seconds.

Unfortunately, Trend Micro's efficacy is up for debate. It no longer participates in the trials run by AV-Comparatives.org, and the most recent data from AV-Test.org is for the 2008 version. Keeping in mind that the data is for a test from September 2008, but the 2008 release is actually from fall 2007 because of the security industry's naming conventions, Trend Micro had lukewarm results. It was able to detect between 90 percent and 95 percent of malware on demand, between 85 percent and 90 percent of adware and spyware on demand, but only notched one to two false positives.

Support
Trend Micro offers free customer support, although if you're looking for help through the program, it will merely shove you, via hot-linked FAQs, toward the Trend Micro Web site. The Product Help link will keep you on your computer, but the rest jump you online. Once there, Trend Micro offers prerecorded video help, manuals, online chat service, and phone service. The phone number is only listed on the Web site behind several links, and is not particularly easy to get to.

Conclusion
Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware 2010 is adequate for security, but the lack of independent test results combined with the cost and the bare-bones features makes it hard to recommend this program to any but the most die-hard of Trend Micro fans. It's hard to say what's different here from what many of the free antivirus vendors offer. If you're set on buying Trend Micro's protection, we strongly recommend you look at the more full-featured packages.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 (CD-ROM, 1-Year License)

Like its more robust sibling, Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 leverages anonymous data from its customer base to create a behavioral engine to further strengthen security safeguards. Other than that, though, there's not much to differentiate KAV from its freeware competitors--some of which score better on efficacy tests. Frustratingly, a significant flaw in the interface design stands out because it's related to a key feature. KAV's performance felt fine but benchmarking revealed inconsistencies.

Installation
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 will run on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. It costs about $20 more than its competitors, but one license can run on up to three computers. Installation offers a Custom method for advanced users to configure which components will be installed, including parental control, the various antivirus engines, and the virtual keyboard. There's also an option to not install the anonymous data collection that Kaspersky's new behavioral engine, the Urgent Detection System, relies on. If you choose to not install it, you won't be any less secure--you just won't be contributing your data to it. If you do, there's a data collection statement so you know what's going on legally, although I suspect most users will treat it like any other legalese EULA and ignore it.
The program will also ask you if you want it to disable your firewall if it's active, and offers a protected install process so your computer is no less safe. Users can activate the program through the trial period or by purchasing a license immediately, and they can also toggle the program's sensitivity to user input by choosing the less-intrusive "trust Kaspersky" option or the more customizable "ask for user input" when it detects a threat.
You can also configure definition file updates as automatic--which is the recommended option--scheduled, or manual, and users will be able to password-protect Kaspersky's settings. This is a smart safety feature for computers that have more than one user. The last configuration window under the advanced user installation will ask you what kind of malware you want KAV to detect.
Once you've finished the installation, KAV won't require a reboot as it has in the past, although uninstallation still does. The first window that opens will be a virus definition warning that your local virus definition database requires an update. Clicking the link will open the main Kaspersky window and begin updating the program.
Overall, only power users should choose the longer advanced installation process, but the experience was smooth and flawless on a Windows 7 RTM laptop. It had no conflicts with the already installed security program AntiVir, and after uninstallation only two minor traces of the program were found in the Registry. Uninstalling using the included Modify, Repair, or Remove tool allows users opportunity to keep certain program data on the computer, and after the reboot KAV had reactivated the Windows Defender firewall.
Interface and features
The full-featured suite, Kaspersky Anti-Virus offers a complete and competitive range of security options. The new features in the 2010 edition include the aforementioned behavioral-based detection system called the Urgent Detection Sytsem. The UDS utilizes the anonymous data of 10 million of Kaspersky's customers who choose to participate in submitting their system scans to Kaspersky's central servers for analysis, and it "red flags" suspicious behavior so that even if a program used to be safe, it can shut down newly activated malicious intent.

Although this might sound insidious, it's actually a smart way to leverage a huge consumer base for security purposes as long as the data remains anonymous. Many other security suites are incorporating behavioral detection engines, so this is something that users will have to get used to if they're not. Among UDS's better sub-features include the ability to customize how long it takes to pass judgment on a new program and per-user configuration of the rules governing program behavior.
Even if a program has deep penetration, if it starts behaving badly, then Kaspersky will block it. If it's an unknown, Kaspersky will treat it skeptically, monitoring and restricting the program until it has been proven safe. The Vulnerability Scan option, available under the Scan tab, utilizes tech from Secunia to determine which programs are potential security risks because they lack recent updates or patches. For programs that may not warn you that they have a pending security update, such as Adobe Flash, having this tool baked-in could be exceptionally useful.
The tools offered under the My Protection tab are nothing short of robust. There's antivirus protection for files, e-mail, HTTP traffic, and instant messaging. Application control, the aforementioned UDS, includes options for customization, should you need to force access for a specific program that Kaspersky is identifying as a threat. There are protections against spam, phishing, and banner ads, firewall control, and a network monitor to track network activities for people who like to drill down deep into their system's behavior. There's also a Parental Control filter, with options to outright block children from particular sites or merely log events. By default, the Parental Control filter is off, and when activated it assigns all other users on the computer Child status until directed otherwise. There's a Teenager status, as well, for more granular control of restrictions.
The Update Center tab offers a smooth update scheduler integrated into the main interface. Click on Run Mode to change the schedule. This isn't remarkable except to point out that only the definition file update offers an update like this. To schedule any other regular scan, you must click on the Settings option at the top right of the main Kaspersky window, choose the feature you want to schedule from the list on the left if it wasn't open in the main window when you hit settings, select Settings from within the window that opens, and then finally click the Run Mode tab on yet one final pop-up window. It's a tedious process and could be streamlined to great effect, but makes one of the basic features of this security program unnecessarily hard to get to.

The program also comes with an auto-run disable feature and a virtual keyboard so that, in theory, you can enter passwords without worrying about a keylogger. In fact, security experts have warned that onscreen keyboards do not decrease the risks of password theft, and either way I think most users will find it superfluous. The new gamer mode, however, isn't. This basically keeps Kaspersky functioning while you play games, but kills interrupting pop-ups and strips memory usage down to its minimum.
The annoying yellow bar announcing that your computer security is at risk because you're running the trial can be toggled under the Report link at the top right of the main window. I'm not happy about the wording of the message as it appears in the program, falsely equating your computer's security with the status of your license when Kaspersky Labs itself offers the trial as full-featured.

Scans and definition file updates performed empirically as expected, with the Quick Scan taking less than 3 minutes. The Vulnerability Scan took less than 4 minutes, as well. The Full Scan, which was expected to be slow, took less than an hour, but as it approached 80 percent completion it oscillated between telling me that it would finish in 1 minute and 2 minutes. In fact, it would take another 8 minutes to finish.
CNET Labs' benchmarks reveal a slightly different side to KAV. KAV slowed down our test computer's cold boot time by 2 seconds, and shut down time by a second and a half. Scan times were actually faster on Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 than Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 by 9 seconds. They have identical engines, but KAV has fewer ancillary features. During our MS Office and iTunes decoding tests, both KIS and KAV performed identically, although during the media multitasking test KAV was faster than KIS by 64 seconds. In our Cinebench test, KIS fared the worst compared to a standard machine and KAV. KIS hit 3,908, while KAV notched 4,190 and baseline computer marked 4,217.

Virus and malware efficacy scores for Kaspersky's 2010 products were not available at the time of writing, and will be updated here when they are announced. However, last year's Kaspersky 2009 has scored average or better in all areas of detection according to virus and malware detection results at AV-Test.org and AV-Comparatives.org. AV-Test noted that it detected more than 98.4 percent of malware on demand, and 98.3 percent of spyware on demand, with an average rate of false positives. AV-Comparitives.org awarded Kaspersky 2009 Advanced+ in both February 2009's on-demand comparative and in May 2009's retrospective/pro-active test, noting few false positives and a 50 percent detection rate, behind Microsoft, Eset, Avira, and G Data. The short version of these independent test results is that last year's Kaspersky scored above average in general, and was excellent at malware detection.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus contains most of the same engines and features as Kaspersky Internet Security. It lacks the personal two-way firewall, parental and privacy control, whitelisting and application control, safe run virtual sandbox, anti-spam protection, and banner ad blocking.
Support
Kaspersky's support looks organized and straightforward. Click the support link at the bottom of the main window to bring up a new window, with options to directly submit a ticket, browse the Kaspersky knowledge base, or visit the user forums. Users can e-mail or call a toll-free number for live technical support, and a link to the Help database appears on pop-ups as well as the main window.
Conclusion

No doubt that Kaspersky is an effective antivirus, but it's the extra features available in Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 that make it worth paying for, and Kaspersky Anti-Virus lacks them. There are some niggling problems with the interface, and the performance numbers could be stronger, but the inclusion of the behavioral engine bodes well for the future. Overall, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 is adequate for the average consumer, but power users will probably find it a bit too lightweight for the cost.

Consistently at or near the top of independent efficacy testers, Avira's AntiVir remains one of the best freeware security solutions around.
