When I've looked at it (in a darkened room) for more than a minute or two, I have found that simultaneous with my body relaxing, my mind starts to wander in a fascinating way. I recommend it. It's wonderful, easy meditation, and you don't need any dangerous drugs. Seemingly silly exercises like this one have made my "comeback" much quicker. You can click on the image to see it at its full size, which is considerably larger.

The fascinating shape is actually an impossible recursive pattern wrapped around a doughnut-like shape called a toroid. Really. Look it up if you like.

Sexual Signals: Availability, Willingness, Challenge

The woman in the photograph at left is virtually screaming her message in non-verbal but obvious cues, designed to send out, at minimum three messages, each and all related to a very physical seduction.

And none of these seductive signs is related remotely to the provocative manner in which she is dressed or her physical attractiveness by average US "typical" male standards. In fact she is a study in temptation, persuasion and a potential call (to the right bidder) to action.

There is a seduction in the making, just by examining this picture.

No details are necessary.

1) The twisting of her hips and lower midsection is associated with flexibility, fitness, eagerness to move and sultry sexual activity. Further it thrusts her chest partially forward (straining confinement), while putting her hips in a passive, receptive position;

2) Her straight forward, full-contact facial expression and position, as well as her slightly cocked right shoulder [as if there were a chip on it] presents an opportunity and a challenge, if you were to dare to take it. She is signifying courage, haughtiness and self-confidence, but she is accentuating her look of accessibility and willingness;

3) Her right hand, which is tugging downward at her jeans is indicative of aggressiveness, and is a way to subconsciously (on the part of both the young woman and her quarry) cause the observer's eyes to complete an intensified visual triangle of her right shoulder, her left breast, and her right hand, tugging at her jeans. The viewer (presumably her quarry), as a matter of courtesy would try to maintain eye-contact, but his/her peripheral vision would force involuntary repeated looks at the seductive triangle which she has accomplished without even moving.

Her principal mode of non-verbal communication is posture, as opposed to gesture, and it is indeed quite potent. It is critically important to remember that body-talk is not necessarily conveyed through motion or gesture or mobile signalling -- our message is often made very clear just by our posture or stance.

Sympathies, Condolences, Comfort And Support - Opportunities In Sorrow

When someone about whom you care experiences the loss of a loved one, it is indeed a sad thing. But you can gain by it (in the most positive sense, and not as a sociopathic opportunist or as an emotionless manipulator) in two ways: 1) you can offer comfort to the bereaved person; and, 2) you can show your qualities of empathy, compassion, devotion and friendship to somebody who may be, in some form or fashion, important to you -- either now or in the future. There is occasionally a reward for good acts and deeds in Sending Signals beyond the trite old "Virtue is its own reward."

Beyond this, there is the fact is that people like the company and the opportunity to forge relationships with people who care about them. But that caring must be sincere. Don't miss a chance to communicate during a trying time or a crucial moment in someone else's life.

Recently a dear friend and colleague of mine lost a good friend and a professional colleague of hers, and I took the time (because I care very much about her) to write a long text message -- even though my text message was a colossally long one, I needed for her to immediately have it in her hands right then; I couldn't waste time writing an email which might not be read for several days. And so I wrote to this wonderful friend:

"I am so profoundly sorry for your loss, and for your deep sadness. I wish I could help to ease your pain. When people whom we are privileged to love are taken from us, we are never prepared.... we feel incomplete. We second-guess ourselves about the last words we said, and the last words said to us. In all truth, child, we will all have regrets and doubts in the self-deprecating distorted vision that is hindsight - but the sum, upon reflection, of the best moments, of sharing, of laughing, of just leaning on each other a bit from time to time, of just being intertwined will far outweigh our laments. And the best memories of that magic will be like sunlight through the leaves on the trees that form a canopy over the forest we wander through in the uncertain span of time we call "life." And life will indeed continue - but chastened by the inevitability of mortality, and touched by an unforgettable void, we take ever greater care to hold those we love a little bit tighter, and to tell those who are precious to us how much they mean to us. We invariably find ourselves being more generous with our love, and giving it its deserved but pent-up voice more often, with greater ease, with greater abandon, and with less fear of the consequences. We become braver in bringing our affection out into the open, where there is no mistaking it. If there is anything which I can do to bridge the distance between you and a smile, you have only to ask. You are a sensitive and beautiful soul - no need to hide it - and I'm certain that you gave your friend much to be happy about and thankful for during your time together. Love, Douglas"

Marketing: Learn To Listen!

Most people love to speak and to tell stories. Yet, many of us are so busy monopolizing a conversation that we don't take the time to:

1) Listen to our vendors, customers, clients, contacts, competitors, team mates, employees and colleagues;

2) Let these potentially important people educate us by our listening to what they have to say and focusing on it with full attention;

3) Read their critical non-verbal communication, body language and microexpressions in order to see how they are reacting to us, or to determine how they feel about what we've said;

4) Let people vent until the hostility goes away, reason returns and fatigue sets in;

5) Ask them how they feel or what they think about something [letting them be our experts and advisors -- at least to their perception];

6) Thank them for speaking to you, and for informing you of something which you hadn't realized before;

7) Nod our heads in either the affirmative or in the negative to make it obvious that we are listening, absorbing, involved, evaluating and confirming our agreement (if we do, in fact agree) with what is being said, either in whole or part.

Followers of The Sending Signals Blog must realize that signals are sent and received, but a diatribe or a lecture does not create an important dialog -- an important bridge is built and strengthened when we act as good receivers of the signals sent by others.

As you may already know every storyteller loves a 'good listener'. Your company will be cherished if you learn how to listen with focus, acknowledgement and respect for the communicator across the canyon from you.

You've heard it said many times before -- "He/She is a great listener!"

Be that great listener. Cultivate your listening skills. More people will want to speak with you -- but ironically, more people will willingly listen to you.... especially if you are addressing their issues or answering their questions. From the standpoint of behavioral psychology, these people will feel more important and gratified. You will get more cooperation.

Face-Reading And Date/Mate Selection

What we look for in a leader, protector, employee, soldier or in a platonic friend are traits which are quite at odds with those traits that tend to draw us to those with whom we wish to date or mate.

The very insightful article which follows was originally published on Yahoo! by Match.com, the popular computer dating service:

"Dating would be so much easier if we could just take one look at someone’s face and know all of the details about his or her personality, wouldn’t it? While we may wish there was an app for that, the truth is, our brains are already doing a pretty good job. When we make snap judgments about people based on their facial shape and features, it turns out that we’re not totally off-base with those perceptions.

“People who are attractive are perceived in ways that are desirable,” explains Dr. Jeffrey Spiegel, director of Advanced Facial Esthetics in Chestnut Hill, MA. “For example, a feminine look correlates with perceptions of trustworthiness.” These perceptions can then shape the person being judged so that his or her behavior actually aligns with the traits that the observer already expects. In fact, our split-second facial judgments are so accurate that a series of recent studies have shown people can correctly predict who’ll win an election merely by looking at photos of the candidates’ faces. Trait #1: Men with wider faces tend to be self-sacrificing in competitive situations
In a study published in Psychological Science conducted by psychologist Dr. Michael Stirrat and research partner David Perrett, groups of University of St. Andrews students were given money to play a game where they could either benefit themselves or risk their money to benefit their entire group. Half of the participants were told that results would be compared between St. Andrews students, while the other half were told they would be compared against students from a rival university. The researchers determined that the more robust-looking, wider-faced men in the study were more self-sacrificing than other men when they were told about the rivalry issue. This finding goes against the commonly held stereotype that more masculine-looking men are somehow less trustworthy. “What I would conclude from this,” says Stirrat, “is not that wider-faced men are necessarily more aggressive or uncooperative, but that they are more competitive — and when the competition is between ‘us and them,’ they are very good players to have on your team.”

Trait #2: Smiles convey a person’s hormone levels

“Features of masculinity — such as a heavy brow and angular face — somewhat overlap with the facial expressions of anger,” says Patti Wood, MA, CSP, body language expert and author of the new book, SNAP: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language and Charisma. “Also, facial roundness and soft features overlap with the expressions that indicate happiness, so we are more likely to see a smiling face as being ‘feminine’ and an angry face as more ‘masculine.’ It’s interesting to note that men with higher-than-average testosterone levels tend to smile less, too.”

Trait #3: Beauty correlates with a positive attitude

“A beautiful face is one that’s considered to be symmetric, youthful, and encompasses the mathematical definition of the ‘high average,” explains Dr. John Anastasatos, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, CA. “High average means that if you take a face, and to that face you add composites of other similar faces, the new face tends to be more beautiful. The more beautiful people tend to have healthier lifestyles, healthier habits and a healthier more positive look to society because known and unknown people treat them better compared to unattractive people.” In other words, beauty leads to a positive feedback loop of healthier behaviors and attitudes. However, it’s a good idea to be wary of the “halo effect” when it comes to evaluating attractive faces, warns Dr. Stirrat. “The ‘halo’ effect is when something has a good trait, we assume that its other traits are good too, such as if we look at some product in a shop and the packaging is high quality, we automatically assume that the product inside will be too. It’s the same with faces.”

Trait #4: Facial asymmetry correlates with depression

There’s a reason human beings are extremely attuned to facial symmetry — often without even realizing it. “Researchers have found correlations between symmetry and health, which lends itself to the theory that while looking for a mate, humans and other animals look for candidates who will be the most healthy and free of disease,” says Wood. “One study found that men with asymmetric faces tend to suffer more from depression, anxiety, headaches, and even stomach problems. Women with facial asymmetry are less healthy and more prone to bouts of emotional instability and depression.”

Trait #5: A person’s eyes can make someone seem trustworthy (or detail-oriented)

According to the ancient principles of Chinese face reading, larger eyes suggest that someone is open and easier to get to know, notes Simon G. Brown, author of Face Reading: Secrets of the Chinese Masters. People with larger eyes often feel comfortable revealing many aspects of their character with others, making them appear to be especially gentle, kind and accessible. This trait will make others feel they are easy to trust and more comfortable with sharing their own problems. Conversely, smaller eyes are a sign that the person is typically precise, accurate and detail-oriented.

Trait #6: Rosy cheeks aren’t as healthy as those with yellower skin tones

George Costanza was wise to look for a rosy hue — though he may have been better off looking for yellow tones in his potential dates’ cheeks. “It turns out that yellowness in the skin is related to a healthy diet,” explains Dr. Stirrat. “Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables actually turns your skin a healthy yellow (from the carotenoids), and when people rate manipulated images, they prefer those individuals that look like they consume a good diet. It’s worth noting that this is separate from other skin tones and therefore is true of your skin, regardless of whatever race you happen to belong to.”

If you’d still prefer to take your time getting to know someone after learning all these shortcuts, however, you’re on the right track. “The bottom line is that people are attracted to others who make them feel good about themselves,” says Pablo Soloman, an artist and designer living in Texas. “So, being able to express interest, respect, finding the other person attractive, etc. will be that qualities we find to be most attractive in a date. It all starts with a smile and eye contact.”

In selecting a person to date, we are generally searching for a person with whom we might wish to mate. All of Laura Schaefer's general observations, cited in the above article are the usual subconscious superficial representations of the qualities one chooses, and one values in seeking a partner of the opposite sex (assuming heterosexuality). Those superficial qualities or indicators that we look for in a date, however, are quite different than those which we look for in 1) a leader (or an executive); 2) a business partner; or 3) a person with whom we wish to engage in negotiated business commerce.

Sensory Substitution: Human Advancement Potential - Communicating In New Ways!

The potential to expand our senses, to utilize cellular functional plasticity in order to engage in sensory substitution, organic or full body re-creation (related to cloning and regeneration done in a proper medical environment outside of the body), as well as the regrowth of severed limbs and ravaged visceral or brain components is fascinating, but largely unexplored.

Think about this: "Each of our body's individual cells carries within it the entire genetic code and blueprint for the replication of our entire body, and of any body part." This would seem to contain the subtle inference that any one cell, given the right "instructions" or "stimuli" or "environment" could grow a whole new you, or any spare parts or replacements that you might need at any given time.

We experience small hints of this potential for vast sensorial expansion, identification and cultivation of unacknowledged "sixth senses," through various experiences, exercises and scientific (principally medical) innovations. For example:

1) Intuition and instinct as intelligence beyond our conscious knowledge;

2) "Sensing" when someone is staring at you;

3) Knowing that someone has entered a room and is standing behind you, even if there were no sounds or other sensorial clues prior to or during his secretive entrance. [one theory is that your body can "feel" the displacement or compression of air molecules due to the person's presence];

4) Getting a "feeling" that someone closely connected to you yet many miles away has been hurt or killed;

5) Thinking about a particular song, and then turning on the radio only to hear that very song playing...

Most of us, during the course of our lives, have experienced more than one of the above occurrences multiple times. It may be sensory. It may be signalling or messaging. It remains a mystery, but it is a well-documented part of the Human Dance Of Life. It dates as far back as written communication, and is referenced in virtually every culture.

Many tribal rituals engaged in by the more "primitive" (a poorly judgmental term meaning "unperturbed by the distractions and preoccupations of excessive stimuli, sensorial overload and screaming technology) produce, through the integration of natural chemicals (botanicals, usually, but occasionally more refined drugs produced synthetically) have produced synesthesia, or even glimpses at other realms of existence.

I believe that we are sending and receiving signals through various mechanisms that we are failing to acknowledge and failing to develop or cultivate. Perhaps these special communications are far more intimate and profound -- requiring less explanation -- than those verbal and non-verbal signals which we acknowledge so readily. And perhaps, we are more connected to each other, and to whole of us, than we even dare to think.
