We have been seeing some quality apps making their way to the Windows Store, with the likes of Photobucket and Kobo reader apps and some Metro based gaming titles featuring in the Windows Store upfront.But there wasn’t any social networking app for taking for the Consumer Preview users,Until now.The first Social Networking app to make it to the Windows Store is “Renren HD” app from the Chinese Social Networking Site Renren,.

Today is the big day for those of you who have been anticipating some fresh new Windows 8 bits to toy with: Following an official debut right next door to the Mobile World Congress – not specifically at it, it’s a little side event at the Hotel Miramar in Barcelona – Microsoft has just officially released the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

So, what’s new in the build? Some of the more noteworthy improvements include OS-wide spell check (this is huge; it’s a feature that has been requested by a lot of people for years), the replacement of the Start button with what is called a "Start preview thumbnail" – which displays a preview of the start screen on top of an interface that allows you to cycle through all of your open apps – and the introduction of "Flyout" notifications.

One thing that I found to be quite humorous is that Microsoft actually added a feature called "boot forward"; see, due to the vastly improved boot times in Windows 8, it would be tough or impossible to pull up a boot options menu (i.e by pressing F8). They actually had to implement a feature that lets you set boot options prior to restarting. I will be writing a comprehensive review of this build shortly, in which I’ll elaborate on just how nice these features are when put to use.

It would appear that Microsoft finally hired a plumber to solve their constant leak issues as, surprisingly, there have been no Windows 8 build leaks during the interim period from September to now (of roughly five months). Also, little information has unofficially trickled out since; much of what we learned about the OS during that period is thanks to the notoriously long Building Windows 8 blog posts by Steven Sinofsky.

This Consumer Preview release is the first official Windows 8 build drop from Microsoft since the Developer Preview, which was released during the BUILD conference last September. This was downloaded quite rapidly, surpassing the 500,000 downloads mark within 24 hours of release, and the 3 million mark by December, so it will be interesting to see how much traction the Consumer Preview will gain.

If you’re the sort of person who spends ages looking for your mobile phone, Google may have the answer.

And the solution will be right in front of your eyes – literally.

The technology giant is close to launching a pair of futuristic glasses that would deliver all the services of a smartphone straight to the wearer’s eye.

Featuring a miniature display on one lens, the hi-tech specs allow users to surf the internet or deal with text messages and emails without lifting a finger.

The screen is controlled with a ‘mouse’ which is moved simply by tilting your head. And should you still wish to actually talk to someone, it is believed the glasses will let you make calls using an in-built microphone.

Reports suggest the device, which would revolutionise the smartphone market, could be available by the end of this year costing less than £380 – making it cheaper than Apple’s iPhone.

Users would also be able to see through the lenses as normal and go about their daily business, then with a flick of the head activate the display and start surfing.

The glasses would use the same Google operating system that powers Android smartphones and tablets and would connect to the internet through 3G or next-generation 4G mobile networks.

They would also be equipped with GPS mapping technology and motion sensors, as well as a camera. It brings the prospect that wearers could be given information instantly on the buildings they are looking at, on nearby landmarks or friends who are in the area.

But the devices will also bring new potential for advertisers to reach users in ever more personal situations, such as in a lift, a restaurant or relaxing on their sofa.

Seth Weintraub, from the 9 to 5 Google blog, revealed clues to how the glasses would work. ‘The system currently used is a head tilting to scroll and click,’ he said. ‘We are told it is very quick to learn and once the user is adept at navigation, it becomes second nature and almost indistinguishable to outside users.

‘These glasses, we heard, have a front-facing camera used to gather information and could aid in augmented reality apps. The heads-up display is only for one eye and on the side.’

The glasses are apparently being developed in Google’s top-secret research laboratory in Mountain View, California. Apple is also thought to be developing pioneering technology, such as smartphones that can be worn as watches or sewn into clothing.

How to Remove Write Protected Error from USB Drive or PenDrive

One of our readers has asked for this solution and hence as the post title says we will be trying to fix a very common error faced by many USB Drive users. This post includes four different solution sets for removing the write protection error for USB drives or simply pendrives.

Primary Checks

Prior to fixing your error, you need to do some basic checks

1. Make sure the write-protection latch of your drive (if it has any) is turned off.

2. If you are using an updated antivirus, try scanning the drive for viruses.

Solutions

There are many solutions to this problem and actually every one of them may have worked for some users but may not work for you. Hence I’m trying to enlist all the feasible solutions, so if one doesn’t work, try the other one.

1. Fixing Registry

Press Winkey + R (or just open the Run from Start menu). Type regedit and hit enter.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
NOTE : If this is not there, you may need to add this entry. For that download the batch file add.bat from here, and double-click the file. The entry will be added to registry.
Now in the right pane double-click the key WriteProtect. Now set the Value Data to 0 (zero) and press OK.
Exit Registry and restart your PC.
Now try using your USB Drive.

2. Using Formatting Utility

As the solution suggests we will be formatting the USB drive, so backup all the items in the drive first before carrying out htis step.

Download Apacer Formatting Utility.
Unzip the pack to a folder. Now double-click the Start.bat file in that folder. This will initiate the formatting. Wait until the formatting completes or the LED of the drive stops blinking. If you fail once give it few more try.
Now remove the pen-drive and plug it in to the PC again. Now, open RUN and type cmd and hit Enter.
Now in the command prompt, type CHKDSK [usb-drive-letter]: /F. That’s it. You are done.

3. Trying a low-level format

This is yet another solution which will try to solve the problem by using a low-level format. Don’t forget to backup your drive items.

Download the free utility HDD Low Level Format Tool.
Now using it, perform a low-level format of your USB drive. If you fail once give it few more try.
Now open RUN and type diskmgmt.msc, hit Enter.
Now right-click the USB Drive and press Format. Now do as shown in the screenshot below. Then press OK

4. For Transcend USB Drive Users

Transcend has its own Recovery Tool to get rid of this error.

Go to the Transcend Product Support Page.
Enter your Model No. of your USB Drive, hit Enter. Now select the product which which is most similar to yours from search results.
Download the mFormat utility. If you are asked for serial no. enter your product serial no. or if you don’t have it enter this number: 1456784523.
Plug-in your drive and run the utility to format your drive. You may need to try this method several times to fix the error.

Well as I said earlier that every single trick among all those listed above have solved the problem for many and has not for many others. Lets hope one of these will help you out of the “Write-protection” error. If you fail, feel free to ask. To sign up for Google AdSense, follow these steps.

Step 1: Preparing to Register

In order to sign up for Google AdSense, you first need to have a website. The website should be well designed and have plenty of original content. You only need to sign up once for AdSense. Once you have an AdSense account, you can use it for any and all websites you own.

However, in order to actually get an AdSense account, you need to have one website for Google to look at and approve.Use your best website for the signup process. In a way, this is like putting your best foot forward.

Show Google that your websites are of high quality and that their publisher network will be better off with your website there. You should also read over all the AdSense policies and terms.

Webmasters who unwittingly violate the terms risk getting their accounts suspended.

It only takes about 20 minutes to read over all the rules; well worth the time investment to reduce the risk of accidental suspension.

Step 2: Specify Website URL
Specify the website that you want Google to review. Specify also the primary language of the website. Check the two boxes that say you won’t incentivize clicks and won’t place ads on pornographic websites.

Step 3: Add Contact Information

Add your contact information. Make sure your name and billing address are 100% correct, as that’s the name and address the checks will be written to.

The account type will tell Google whether to write the checks out to a company name or to a personal name.

Step 4: Agree to Terms and Submit

Agree to the terms and conditions and click submit to submit your site to Google for review.

Then you wait. If Google decides that your website is of sufficient quality to be on their network, you’ll soon have a working AdSense account. If not, you’ll receive notice that your site was denied.

Note that even when you do get your AdSense account, you won’t be paid out until you reach your first $100.

When you reach your first $100, that’s when the “real” approval process happens. Every site that reaches the $100 mark is again reviewed by a real human.

If Google doesn’t find your traffic acceptable at the $100 mark, your account will be disabled and the $100 won’t be paid out.

On the other hand, if you get paid your first $100, that means you’ve passed all of Google’s hurdles and now have a fully fledged AdSense account.

That said, once you have your initial AdSense account, how do you actually use it? Here’s how.

Select the channels you want to tag your ads with here. If you haven’t created any channels, just click “Create new custom channel” to create a channel on the spot.

Click submit and get code to save all your changes and generate the HTML code to place the ad unit on your site.

Copy and paste this code to your site. Give it 10-20 minutes before expecting the ad to appear.

4 Things To Do Immediately When Your Facebook Account Is Hacked

For most people, having their Facebook account hacked is a nightmare. Imagine if someone had access to all your private messages, could contact your friends, abuse your Facebook page, and delete your personal information. To avoid this, you should regularly update your password and keep other security settings tight.

Once it’s too late, however, you must act fast. The most important thing is – don’t panic! You canregain access to your account.

How Do You Know Your Facebook Account Was Hacked?

First of all, how do you know your Facebook account was hacked if nothing obvious was changed…yet? If a hacker managed to get into your account, they will leave a trace. While their session is active, it will be listed under > Home (top right corner) > Account Settings >Security > Active Sessions (click edit). Here you can end the activity of suspicious sessions.

It is recommended that you enable Login Approvals for logging in from unrecognized devices. For increased security, you should also set app passwords.

1a. Change Your Password

In case your password was not changed you got lucky! This is the time to update your password! Be sure to end any suspicious active sessions first (see above), then go to >Home > Account Settings > General and click > Password to confirm your current password and then enter a new password.

When you’re done, review our articles regarding Facebook security (see resources below) and see what other measures you can take to secure your account.

From here, proceed to step 3 if you think that your account was abused.

1b. Reset Your Password

If your password was changed, act quick! Try to regain access. There is a > Forgot your password? link underneath the Facebook login.

It will let you retrieve your password in several different ways. You can either enter the email address you registered to Facebook with or any other secondary email address you added, as well as your phone number and username.

If you’re not sure whether the person that hacked your account was smart enough to change your profile information, you should go with the last option and enter your name and that of a friend. This will give you an idea of which information is currently added to your account.

If you don’t have access to any of the email accounts or to the phone number associated with your account, click the > No longer have access to these? URL. This will take you to a page where you can enter a new email address, which Facebook will then use to assist you in recovering your account.

This is not all. If you believe that your account was abused by the person who has access to it, proceed to step 2.

2. Report Compromised Account

If your account wasn’t simply hacked, but is sending out ads and spam to your friends, you must report it as compromised.

From here, immediately proceed to step 2.

3. Do Damage Control

After doing everything you could to regain control over your hacked Facebook account, inform your friends about what is going on, just in case the hacker has abused or currently is abusing your account. If you presently can’t access your account, contact your Facebook friends through other social networks, by email, or have a mutual friend inform them via Facebook. Once you can log in again, proceed to step 3.

4. Remove Suspicious Applications

Oftentimes, it’s not an evil person that randomly hacked into your account. More likely than not you granted access to a malicious application which subsequently hijacked your account. To remove suspicious applications, go to > Home > Account Settings > Apps and go through the list. Click the > X next to any application you wish to remove or click > Edit to change what the app can do.

As a result, websites can be sluggish, may work differently from browser to browser, and can be vulnerable to security holes.

Bruce Lawson, who evangelizes about open Web standards at Opera Software, says that to make websites perform functions the Web wasn't originally designed for, developers must perform complex coding tasks that can easily introduce errors and make applications fail.

The group working on HTML5, Lawson says, was given the tall order of making the specification more forgiving than its predecessors so that older or improperly coded websites will work better in HTML5-enabled browsers. They also wanted to extend the specification forward to support modern trends such as rich Internet applications. "The basis of HTML5 is relentlessly pragmatic," he says. "It's designed to reflect what people are actually doing."

Experts point to a feature called Web Sockets as an example of the improvements that HTML5 can offer. Web Sockets provide a website with an application programming interface (API) that opens an ongoing connection between a page and a server, so that information can pass between them in real-time. Normally, the browser has to make a request every time it wants an update.

The effect of Web Sockets is something like moving from having a conversation via e-mail to having it via instant message, says Ben Galbraith, who co founded the Web development site Ajaxian.com, and is director of developer relations at Palm. With e-mail, each message is sent as a single event, while instant messages allow for a smooth, ongoing conversation.

The 5 Most Common Tactics Used To Hack Passwords

When you think of a serious security threat, you may think of some clever malicious program that steals your data or takes over computer. In reality, you’re just as (if not more) likely to be hit by a much simpler breach – a hacked password.

Once someone has your password for an online account, they can use it however they like. There are a number of methods commonly used to obtain a password, and knowing them can help you protect yourself.

Trying Common Passwords:

Any hacker trying to break through a password will first try the most common passwords in the book. Silly though it may seem, a disturbingly large number of people rely on passwords that consist of just a few common numbers of letters. Even the word “password” is commonly used as a password.

Hackers know this, and can reference common passwords to try and gain entry. Though it won’t work on most passwords, it works frequently enough to be worth a try. If successful, the hacker can lean back and sip his Mountain Dew.

How to Protect Yourself: This one is simple. Don’t use common passwords. This includes single words, popular phrases, and simple combinations of a particular character type (like numbers). Even passwords like “superman” and “dragon” are common enough to earn mention in some studies of commonly used passwords.

Social Engineering:

If commonly used passwords don’t work, and a hacker knows the owner of the password they’re trying to bypass, social networking can be used to try and figure out what the password might be.

Hackers know that people who don’t use common passwords are still likely to use passwords that have some personal significance. The password might be the name of a pet or a favorite TV show. Such information is often included on social networking profile.

Should trying this tactic still not work, the information available on a social network can be used to construct phishing attacks. Perhaps the target lists that they play a popular online game. A fake email could then be sent asking for password information or linking to a site where password information must be entered.

How to Protect Yourself: There are two steps you can take here. One is to make your social network private to people who are not your friends, and the second is to make sure that you don’t use information about your personal life to form a password.

The Weakest Link

Should a hacker still fail to guess a password, they’ll have to start breaking out some true hacking skill – but perhaps not much. Most people use the same password on multiple sites, and many use just one password for everything. Hackers know this, and they also know that many sites have weak security.

Using the information found while reviewing your social networking profiles, a hacker may be able to identify sites you visit. Some are sure to be heavily guarded. Others, however, probably aren’t. They may be vulnerable to simple exploits that allow for the retrieval of stored passwords, and the owners may never even realize they were hacked. Alternatively, a brute force attack might be used.

How to Protect Yourself: Don’t use a single password for every website. Ideally you should use a different password for every site, but that can be difficult. A compromise you might find effective is to use the same password for low security risks, like a blog you visit and comment on, but use unique passwords to protect more important accounts, like your web mail. Yet another option is to use a password manager.

Sniffing Wi-Fi Packets:

Open wireless networks can be a nasty security issue because they are – well – open. Information transmitted on them can be picked up by anyone within range of the network, and that includes passwords.

Wi-Fi sniffing can be utilized either personally or impersonally. If someone is trying to hack your passwords specifically, they might see if you frequently visit a place with open Wi-Fi, like a coffee shop. Or a hacker might just set up an operation in such a location and pick up as many passwords as possible.

How to Protect Yourself: One answer is to just not use open Wi-Fi, but that’s not a realistic expectation for everyone. If you do use open Wi-Fi, make sure that you do not log in to sensitive accounts. If you have varied your passwords, you’ll be safe if a hacker obtains your less sensitive passwords. Also use HTTPS whenever possible. Many sites can use it, but some offer it only as an option.

KeyLogging:

Like sniffing Wi-Fi

keylogging can be used personally or impersonally. Using information gained about you while attempting to guess your password, a hacker might find a way to send you a file that you think is legitimate but actually contains a keylogger. Once installed, it can detect your passwords as you enter them.

A keylogger can also be installed as a part of any piece of malware to hack passwords. The information can then be transmitted to a location where it is compiled and passwords found. Such wide-scale keylogging attacks don’t focus on any particular person, but can be just as damaging.

How to Protect Yourself: Security software can help detect keyloggers and prevent them from being installed on your system. You can find effective solutions for free, so there’s no reason to skip it.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime:

Why it's important: Barnes & Noble's future depends on its e-readers and tablets now. The Nook Simple Touch is just as good as the Kindle Touch without the bothersome ads.

iPhone 4S:

On the outside, you may not notice a huge difference between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. But it's the inside that counts. The iPhone 4S has a zippy dual-core processor and a camera that takes some of the best photos and video we've ever seen on a phone.

Why it's important: The specs are great, but what really matters is Siri, Apple's voice-controlled assistant on the iPhone 4S. Although Siri is still in beta and hardly perfect, we're interested to see how it learns and gets better at intelligently completing tasks.

Sifteo Cubes:

Sifteo cubes are tiny 1-inch devices that you download apps and games to. Each cube is aware of its relation to the other, making the possibilities for games nearly endless.

Why it's important: If Sifteo cubes take off, they could bring in a whole new genre of gaming and interactive learning.

Kindle Fire:

Despite lukewarm reviews, Amazon's Kindle fire is selling like crazy. The company won't give specific numbers, but "millions" have already been sold, it says. The Fire only costs $199, which is $300 cheaper than the iPad. While you sacrifice some polish and functionality for that price, the Fire is still a decent tablet for the casual user.

Why it's important: The Kindle Fire has the potential to disrupt the tablet market. At just $199 it could force Apple to offer a cheaper version of the iPad next year. We'll see.

Nokia Lumia 800:

Why it's important: Verizon has the largest LTE network. Thanks to the MiFi, all your devices can connect from one hotspot.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

After the iPad 2 debuted in March, Samsung had a major "uh-oh" moment. It was about to release a 10-inch Honeycomb tablet that was thicker and slower than what Apple was offering. Instead of rushing the device to market, Samsung made the smart move and went back to the drawing board. The result was the ultra-thin Galaxy Tab 10.1, one of the best iPad alternatives around.

Why it's important: There's a huge opportunity for Barnes & Noble to capitalize on the Nook Tablet in the coming months. If and when it launches a store for downloading movies and music, it'll finally be able to stand up to the Kindle Fire.

Facebook status updates played a starring role in the evolution of the world’s largest social network in 2011.

As several major changes to status updates (increased character limits, for example) rolled out throughout the year, Facebook data scientists kept their eyes focused on tracking the trends among those status updates.

Facebook unleashed that research late Tuesday night in their end-of-year Memology list, which each Decembersince 2009 has helped users understand the most-popular topics, cultural trends and acronyms on the site.

Similar to what was popular on Twitter in 2011, high-profile deaths triggered (see image above) plenty of discussions among you and your friends. On Facebook, the death’s of Osama bin Laden, Steve Jobs and Amy Winehouse incited heavy activity in status updates.

Nokia HG-1, hour-glass design with transparent screen #Maemo #Android #Concept

My Dream Nokia #29 comes from Conny Larsson who said, “ I think Nokia needs something radical in their portfolio and in one of those moments I thought up this. ”

Presenting, the Nokia HG-1

It is a pretty ‘out-there’. On profile it has the shape of an hour glass, thicker at the top and bottom with a slim, see through glass screen in the middle. This glass becomes either semi transparent or completely opaque. It has pressure sensitive sidebars to replace normal navigation buttons and three microUSB ports.

What I love about it is that it has Maemo 5′s hildon desktop (or you have the Android option).

It’s not something that I could see becoming popular mainstream , it’s slightly impractical to pocket(doesn’t really matter, it’s Conny’s Dream Nokia). But I can see it suited on a desk or a shelf. It looks like the design of an award. Now if the bulk could clip off and have that semi transparent to opaque screen then it might fly. Consider though how slim the middle portion is though. Given the thickness of the mini-HDMI, the ends could be no more than 10mm, even 8mm, putting the middle at about 3-4mm.

Nokia LumiaTab – Windows 8 Nokia Lumia Tablet

It’s no surprise that Nokia are working on a tablet. They’ve boldly said they aren’t just going to come with any old tablet that just turns into the next best unmemorable tablet on the shelf of so many duds.

This is another fan concept for My Dream Nokia #37, this time by Beytullah Kuşcu. It’s a very Nokia N9/Lumia 800 style design, nothing much needed to be done given that Nokia has already scored a home run on the appearance.

The back though is marketly different and you can see it appears in Blue, Pink and Green. I think it’s a nice different tablet design as opposed to the current generation of iPad and iPad clones. What, is the only design anyone is able to do a black rectangular bezel?

I’m really looking forward to a Nokia tablet. Will be happy whatever OS that thing runs though having a Windows desktop and Windows Phone it kinda makes it easier to transition into a Windows 8 tablet.

Here’s one of the more recent videos on Windows 8. It’s not a tablet, but an all in one PC hybrid (With touch screen). If you think possibly hundreds of millions of users becoming used to Metro – and in terms of phones the first Metro phone they’d think of is the Nokia Lumia phones. And tablets are useful. Nokia had tablets, they were called Internet Tablets. Before even the first iPhone. They saw the future. iPad isn’t the first tablet, but it’s the one that showed folks that if you give users the right experience they can make use of this new form factor. My med school is giving out iPads as a trial this year and launching them next year -_- all to further strengthen iPad dominance -_- booo. The apps on there are admittedly very impressive.
