New School, New Grade Level and More!

Hi All! Yep, I am moving from first grade to kindergarten and it was a bit of a surprise for me too. Our small little school that I was in is moving hundreds of students into the new school and I was swept up in the move. My principal made the decision to take me with him and I got moved to kindergarten. At first I was upset because I was just getting so comfortable with first grade and I loved my team. Then I realized that half the team was going with me and that made it better. I am going from a school of about 600 students to a school that is twice as big. This is a brand new school and in all 30+ years of teaching I have never opened a new school. This should be exciting is so many different ways! We have seven K teachers so far and I have met some of them and the rest of them I am meeting tonight for dinner with just our little K group. I'm pretty sure I will be the oldest one there, but I am also young at heart. I love K and taught it for many years back before the common core stepped in and changed everything.

I also have to think quick about my blog and what am I going to do now? I have a blog that says "Fabulously First"! UGH! So I emailed Kassie and said "HELP, I need a new tagline and she took care of it right away. OK, so that changed the types of products I am going to be making for TpT just a little bit but I'm excited to be making new things since I haven't blogged in F o r e v e r! I am now following K blogs and in some really great blogging tribes on TPT. Looking forward to getting to know K bloggers and all things "K" again.

Let Me Tell You About APTT and How to Cram!

My school is one of a few that has adopted an innovative model for parent-teacher partnerships. We started at the beginning of the year and it is going fantastic. It's called "Academic Parent Teacher Team" or APTT.

APTT replaces the traditional parent-teacher conference with three group meetings throughout the year, where teachers meet at once with all parents in their classroom. Each parent is provided with a folder of their child's performance indicators. Teachers then provide an in-depth coaching session on how to interpret the data based on overall classroom performance, school benchmarks, and state standards. Teachers provide the parents with strategies and tools to help support learning at home. Our goal this year is sight words (Dolch) for our grade level. I have started assessing my kids for the end of our first quarter and I'm blown away with a majority of my student's progress with their sight words and their fluency!!! Some of my students have improved by 50 to 80 sight words. Their reading levels have gone up right along as well. I can't wait to see what the end of this school year brings to all of us involved! I am so proud of my class for working so hard and for my families working together to make this all happen.

Since our grade level is working on sight words I thought I would introduce you to a fantastic website called "Cram"! It is a website with more then 50 million flashcards and it now has a text-to-speech function. There are flashcard sets that are already created that you can use or you can create your own.

I went to the website and looked up the Dolch sight words and there are plenty of lists to use without me having to create my own.

There are several different ways that you can search on the website. I did two different searches; I searched by subject and then I searched with specific search words (dolch).

The audio content of Cram has almost 20 languages for your non-english speaking students. You do not have to sign up, but it is quick and easy to do if you want to.

Cram also has a large app store so you can find other mobile flashcards for your Android, iPhone or Windows device.

You Know You Need Jooners for Conferences!

As you are getting ready for Parent/Teacher conferences in October, I want to introduce you to Jooners.

Jooners is an online signup sheet that allows you to create, manage, and share your events from anywhere you have internet access. You have the choice to sign up for an account or just click on the "Create Sign Up Sheet" without creating an account.

Why do I need Jooners? Well, you know that Fall Festival that is coming up? How about a class party that is coming up and you want to be organized? How about a book fair and you need volunteers? How about if you want volunteers for your classroom and you want parents to sign up? Get the idea? Now think of other ways you can use Jooners to make your teaching life easier! You can create your own from scratch or you can choose from the examples that are already made. Notice that there is one listed for Parent/Teacher Conferences?

The ones that are already made can also be edited to meet your needs. I used it last spring for conferences and it saved me a LOT of time!

Fundraiser for Fiona

The Who's Who authors are holding a fundraiser for a little girl named Fiona from Indiana.

Three year old Fiona Waller’s only cure is a bone marrow transplant...her medical bills are overwhelming as well.

Fiona was born with a rare, life threatening immune deficiency which requires her to undergo painful weekly infusions. A bone marrow transplant would replace her defective B-Cells and T-Cells. Karen Waller, Fiona's mom worries that, "the only other option is to continue treatments and wait until she gets sick."

The family’s medical insurance requires an $8,000 out of pocket deductible each January.
Fi’s medical bills totaled over $80,000 in the first 6 months.

To help this wonderful family with expenses for this beautiful baby girl, Who's Who is holding a fundraiser to help pay for her medical bills. Our initial goal is to raise enough to pay for the family’s 2016 deductible. Maybe we can even raise enough to pay for the actual bone marrow transplant!

Bright Ideas Blog Hop - July 18th

Happy Summer!

My summer is just about to be over in a little over a week. I have seen pictures of people already preparing their classrooms. UGH! I have a ton of boxes sitting in my house ready to go into the truck to head over to my classroom.

Last year I think my kiddos were eating glue sticks. They all brought in their own personal glue sticks and by April we were OUT! I knew glue sticks were going to cost me so I came up with another plan. One that I could use from year to year and consider it an investment. I bought these bottles and filled them with glue. I found them on Amazon and if you click the image below it will take you to the ones I bought.

These cuties are 2 ounce bottles and they come in a pack of 12. I only bought one package and it was enough to make it to the end of the year. This year I am going to have them out as an option for anyone that wants to use them instead of glue sticks.

I added the liquid white glue to my "wish list" for my classroom, so hopefully I won't have to buy too much of it on my own. I also had a shoebox tub that I used to store the bottles in so it all worked out. Try them out and see what you think!

OK, I haven't watched children's television in a LONG time. I am out visiting grandbaby #3 in California and loving every minute of it. Tomorrow I have to leave my sweet baby and head back home and I am so sad!

I have been taking care of her during the day and every morning we watch Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, which is basically Mr. Rogers animated. So that is why I am listening to it with her because she loves the characters, colors, and music.

I am LOVING that I got to spend two weeks with my sweet baby and had such a wonderful bonding experience with her.

I am THINKING about how I have to leave tomorrow and fly back to GA and get back into the real world again. I know most of you are just starting your summer but in about three weeks I have to be back in my room getting it ready before teacher work week. UGH!

I am WANTING to be able to spend more time with Anna, but I need to go back home...

I did not turn my "teacher brain" off this summer so I have been busy!!!

Five for Friday Link - June 19th

It is already Friday and this week has FLOWN by! I don't like my summers to go by SO fast!

OK, really this week has flown by. Yesterday I got on one of these and flew four hours to Los Angeles to meet one of the most important people in my life.

While I was being held captive on an airplane I watched the movie Interstellar and enjoyed it!

When I got off the plane I had the best little visitor in the back seat with me. I enjoyed being with you and riding with you little Anna. I got her to laugh which totally filled my heart!

Finally got back to the house and was completely exhausted. I have never been on a plane for FOUR hours but it was so worth it!

The folks in Charleston, S.C. have not had good news for loved ones. Please pray for those who lost loved ones this week and please visit Sarah's website, Educlips, to get this beautiful tribute.

"Teach Your Monster to Read" is Awesome and FREE!

Have you signed up for "Teach Your Monster To Read"? What is it? Why is it free? I can answer all of those questions!

The program is funded by the Usborne Foundation, a charity set up to support initiatives to develop early literacy and this is why it is free. The program is for children in the first stages of learning to read, or for older children who need a little more practice. "Teach Your Monster to Read: First Steps for the iPad is $4.99 which I feel is a bit pricey. The reason I say that is because Raz-Kids is web based and the app is free to use on the iPad.

After you have signed up you add players one at a time to choose which game they will play (see below) or sign up multiple players!

Hang on there are some great options:

I love that I can change their passwords to something kid friendly on a keyboard. There is even a place where you can download the stats via excel. They also provide password cards for each student to log into the program. What's not to love?

Yeah, there is a lot more to the program, but I gave you the basics to get started and it is FREE!

Five For Friday - June 5th Linky with Doodle Bugs Teaching!!

Yep, it's that time again for "Five for Friday", but

this is my first Friday for starting my summer.

Got a busy summer planned and would someone please tell me why I have already started creating a list for things to do for next year? Seriously?

I am planning a trip to California in about two weeks and would you believe I didn't have a laptop case for traveling? I know I like being at home but I need to get out more. So I had to buy a laptop case. I wanted to have a really nice one for twice the price but this one will do...

OK, so I also realized that I don't have luggage to fly out to California so I had to go shopping again. I bought something inexpensive because how many times do I use luggage? Hardly Any! So I ended up with this...

Now, this flight is going to be FIVE HOURS and I am not one to embrace being five feet off the ground. What am I going to do for five hours, on a plane, in a squishy seat? I am going to read a book...

Something has to keep my mind off the fact that I am up in the air and not on the ground!!! Being captive on a plane will do this to a person; self- induced professional development?

Oh, and I did shop for something for my classroom for next year. I am getting RID OF MY DESK and using my kidney table. I needed something for all my desk stuff to go into so I bought the three drawer containers from Walmart. Hey, a teacher has to do something with all that JUNK right? So I bought these...

Last, but the most important part to ALL of this insanity, it to hold this little darling right here. I am meeting her for the first time and when I do I know I am going to fall more in love with her then I already am. SHE is worth all the luggage buying, laptop purchasing, and flying on a plane for five hours. I just know she is going to be SO spoiled by the time her GMA is ready to go back home.

This is my cutie pie already getting her "duck face" on. Isn't she the cutest?

I am listening to the birds and to the brand new waterfall and pond that my son made for me in the backyard. He also put fish in it and it is my "peaceful place"

I am excited to go out to California to meet my sweet grand baby, Anna Christine. I can't wait to hold her and spoil her just the way a GMA should do.

Summer seems to go by too fast and before you know it I am back in my classroom wishing for summer again.

I also want to be able to one day get out to Vegas and meet some of these wonderful friends I have made being bloggy buddies! GO TPT!!!

Bright Ideas Link Up! Parent Volunteer Gifts Made Easy!

I always try to come up with some of the best ideas for my parents that volunteer each year in the classroom. So I thought I would make it easier on some of you that fret like I do with coming up with unique ideas for gifts. This year I had some fantastic parent volunteers and they deserve the best!

I love the thumbprints of all the children in the class. It also can be a keepsake for the child whose parent was the volunteer as well.

3. Another idea that I have used and dearly love is this one with the pitchers from Target. They actually are not glass at all, but plastic. You could also fill them with flowers or some crystal light wrapped with colorful ribbons.

Five for Friday with Doodle Bugs Teaching!

Hi Everyone! It has been a long time since I linked up with Doodlebugs for a "Five for Friday"!

It is the beginning of my spring break and I am so excited to just sleep IN!

I am a grandma with grandchild #3 just a few weeks old. Welcome to the world Anna Christine!

Grandchild #4 is on the way and my sweet Alyssa is bringing this one into the world for all of us to love and enjoy!

I enjoyed doing Social Studies this week with Katie's unit on TpT. It is one awesome unit and if you don't have it you NEED it! Thank you Katie!

We had a great time doing some of the activities as a game. Instead of ONE minute to win it, we did FIVE minutes to win it. The kids put the Pledge of Allegiance together in less then 3 minutes and had a blast being competitive.

Today was Fun Friday for my classroom and we had iPads all afternoon. My kids love having the technology in the classroom and having directed activities.

It's Time For Another "Bright Ideas Blog Hop"! Random Name Generators!

In just about all of our classrooms there are those students that will answer ALL of the questions you ask ALL of the time, right? I want to give other students a chance to have a voice too. I went on a search and found a few really good and FREE name selectors that are online.

The first one I am introducing to you is Random Name Picker by ClassTools.net. Just click "edit", copy and paste any list into the window and "save".

After a name is picked you can remove it from the wheel so that it doesn't come up again.

The Random Name Selector from Primary Technology is a very simple tool for choosing names from a list.

Once the name is picked you have the option of launching a countdown timer. You can also remove a name from the list after it has been chosen. Here is a video if you want to learn more about how to use it.

Another one that I really like and use a lot is a Random Name Generator by SuperTeacherTools.net.

You can upload a bulk list and save it to use any time that you need it. You do need to register but it is worth it.

"Don't Worry, Be Appy" Monday ~ Linky Party!

I have one that is simple to play and it is contagious to first graders. In fact, I downloaded it and played it for quite a while. It is my "sitting and waiting" game that I play to make time pass quicker.

Be the first player to get all ten of your dice to show the same number.

HOW TO PLAY:

(2-4 players.) Each player chooses a set of dice. Players hold all ten dice
in their hands. Someone says “Go” and everyone rolls at the same time.
Quickly look at your roll and decide which number you are going to go
for. (For example, if you have more 3’s than any other number, that’s
what you want to go for.) Put all your dice with that number aside,
collect the remaining dice and quickly roll again. (You do not have to
wait for others to roll again. Everyone rolls together only on the first
roll.) Keep rolling until all ten of your dice show the same number.

WINNING:

The first player to get all ten of their dice to match (ten 3’s, for example)
shouts out “TENZI” and wins the game!

Another "BRIGHT IDEAS" Blog Hop! It's ALL About TIME!

It's that time again to do another "Bright Ideas" blog hop! Come and join us and get ready for some fabulous teaching ideas!

My first graders are doing fine with telling time to the hour. When it comes to teaching them about the half-hour, I know what's headed my way. It always confuses them when the hour hand is in between two numbers. So we made up this little rhyme to help them know where to look. I taught them to look where the hour hand is and if they don't know which hour it is, then go to the lowest number. So we reduced it to: "If you don't know, go low"!

I use the website "Stop the Clock" and you can click below and go see it.

We start with using the site practicing time to the hour. I give them a sheet that we use to write down how many seconds/minutes it takes them to get the analog and digital clocks matched.

Then, after we have mastered telling time to the hour we move on to the half-hour:

Tricks and Tips for Teachers: Dots for Sanity!

Here is a quick little tip to keep your sanity with any age group of students. Put colored dots on the corners of the desks (see pic below).

This can be use for organizing so many things such as grouping kids together, taking up papers, and moving students from one location in the room to another. The possibilities are endless...

It's All About Time - New Product Giveaway!

Yeah! I am finally getting back into the routine of "all things normal" for me anyway. I have created several products these past few weeks and I'm liking this a lot. The knee seems to be getting stronger each week and I am enjoying not having any pain.

So here is my latest creation and it all started when my fellow firstie friends at school asked me to do a Scoot game for telling time. It was supposed to be one activity and it ended up being four.

I told you so! Did you just envision teachers scattering everywhere, in a state of panic, just to get away?

OK, on the serious side, I have read so many ways on how to manage them, it's ridiculous.

Folks, there are Pinterest pages dedicated to nothing but pencil management, so you know it is a serious issue.

My latest idea was to grab this little cutie pie from Amazon and try it out. So far it is working and my firsties are enjoying being able to turn the knob and have a pencil roll into the tray. Just click on the image to take you to it!

My kiddos want to make sure that they get every single pencil off the floor and into the sharpening tray so that it stays full of pencils. We even have a special tray for unsharpened pencils that will eventually make their way into our latest little toy.
