Highlights of the Indian Union Budget for the Financial year 2016-17

The following are the Highlights of the Union Budget for the Financial year-2016-17, presented by the Indian Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on 29^th February in the Lokh Sabha of the Indian Parliament:-

DIRECT TAXES:

There will be NO CHANGE in the existing Slabs and Rates of Personal Income Tax
The Surcharge on income above Rs 1 Crore will be 15%
For a new Employees’ Provident Fund/ EPF Scheme, Rs 1000 Crores have been allocated
The Government of India will pay the EPF of 8.33% for the new employees for the first 3 years
Tax Deduction for rent paid will be raised from Rs 20,000/- to Rs 60,000/-
For housing loans below Rs 50 lakhs, additional exemption of Rs. 50,000/- will be allowed for loans upto Rs 35 Lakhs
For construction of houses of less than 60 sq.m. the Service Tax will be exempted construction of houses less than 60 sq. M
Companies with revenue less than Rs 5 crore to be taxed at 29% plus surcharge
Dividend in excess of Rs. 10 lakh per annum to be taxed at additional 10 per cent.

INDIRECT TAXES:

Excise duty raised from 10 to 15 per cent on tobacco products other than beedis
1 per cent service charge on purchase of luxury cars over Rs. 10 lakh and in-cash purchase of goods and services over Rs. 2 lakh.
SUVs, Luxury cars to be more expensive. 4% high capacity tax for SUVs.
Pollution cess of 1 per cent on small petrol, LPG and CNG cars; 2.5 per cent on diesel cars of certain specifications; 4 per cent on higher-end models.
Excise 1 per cent imposed on articles of jewellery, excluding silver

AGRICULTURE:

Total allocation for agriculture and farmer welfare IS Rs 35,984 Crores
28.5 lakh heactares of land wil be brought under irrigation
5 lakh acres will be brought under organic farming over a 3 years period
For recharging ground water Rs 60,000 Crores have been allocated as it urgently necessary to focus on drought hit areas cluster development for water conservation
Dedicated irrigation fund in NABARD is Rs.20.000 Crores
Under the PM Fasal Bima Yojna Insurance Scheme, there will be nominal premium and highest ever compensation in case of crop loss.

BANKING:

For recapitalization of Public sector Banks Rs 25,000 Crores have been allocated
The’ Banking Board Bureau’/BBB will be operationalised to stand solidly behind public sector banks
Target of disbursement under MUDRA has been increased to 1,80,000 Crores
Process of transfer of government stake in IDBI Bank below 50% has started
General Insurance companies will be listed in the stock exchange
In the next 3 year the number of ATMs &, micro-ATMs in post offices will be increased

EDUCATION :

A Scheme for promoting entrepreneurship among the SC/ST people will be launched at a cost of Rs.500 Crores
10 public and 10 private educational institutions to be made world-class
Digital repository for all school leaving certificates and diplomas. Rs. 1,000 crore for higher education financing
1500 Multi Skill Development Centres will be set up at a cost of Rs. 1,700 crores
62 new navodaya vidyalayas will be opened to provide quality education
Digital literacy scheme will be launched to cover 6 crore additional rural households
Entrepreneurship training will be provided across schools, colleges and massive online courses
In the next 3 years 1 Crore of youth will be skilled under the PM Kaushal Vikas Yojna
National Skill Development Mission has imparted training to 76 lakh youth and 1500 Multi-skill training institutes will be set up.

ENERGY:

For Nuclear Power Generation Rs. 3000 crores have been earmarked
For exploiting nuclear energy comprehensive plans to be implemented in the next 15-20 years will be drawn by the Union Government of India
For Deep water Gas exploration incentives will be provided by the Union Government of India
Deepwater gas new disc will get calibrated market freedom, pre-determined ceiling price based on landed price of alternate fuels

HEALTHCARE:

The basic dialysis equipments will be given some tax relief, as in India every year about 2.2 lakhs of renal patients are added and dialysis will be provided at all the district hospitals under the ‘National Dialysis Service Program’.

A new health protection scheme will be launched for health cover upto 1 lakh per family
Senior citizens will get additional healthcare cover of Rs 30,000 under the new scheme
Under the ‘PM Jan Aushadhi Yojana’ which will be further strengthened, 300 generic drug stores will be opened

INVESTMENTS &INFRASTRUCTURE:

On Roadways Rs 27,000/- Crores will be spent
65 eligible habitats will be connected via 2.23 lakh kms of road and the current construction pace is 100 kms/day
Shops will be given option to remain open all the 7 days in a week across markets
For Roads &Highways Rs. 55,000 Crores is allocated and the total amount allocated for roads constructions, including PMGSY is Rs 97,000 Crores
The Total outlay for infrastructure in Budget 2016is Rs. 2,21,246 Crores
New greenfield ports will be developed on east and west coasts
The Union Government of India will partner with the State Governments to revive small and underserved Airports for Regional connectivity

What Are the Latest Rules of IRCTC-Train Tickets Bookings w.e.f. 15th February 2016?

The ‘Indian Union Ministry of Railways’ has introduced the following ‘New Rules’ / Checks in IRCTC's Train Tickets’ / E-Tickets & I- Tickets- Bookings, w.e.f.15th February 2016, to prevent possible misuse in 'Online Train Tickets Bookings' using the IRCTC website. :

1) An Individual User can book a maximum of 6 Tickets in a month using the IRCTC- Website, online.

According to the Indian Railways, 90 % of the Individual Users of IRCTC have been booking a maximum of 6 Tickets in a month and only 10 % of the Individual Users are booking more than 6 Tickets in a month.

2) Individuals are allowed to book only 2 tickets per user-ID in a day, from 8 am to 10 am.

3) Individuals are allowed to book only 2 tickets per user-ID in a day, for ‘Tatkal Booking’, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.

4) ‘Quick Book Option’ will be disabled from 08 am to 12 noon

5) All types of ‘Train Ticketing Agents:

Yatri Ticket Suvidha Kendra/YTSK, Rail Travellers' Service Agents/RTSA, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation /IRCTC agents etc., have been debarred from booking tickets, during the first 30 minutes of opening of booking, i.e. :

from 08 am to 08:30 am- for General Bookings and
from 10 am to 10:30 am for ‘Tatkal Booking’ for AC Classes and
from 11:00 am to 11:30 am for ‘Tatkal Booking’ for Non-AC classes,

6).Bookings will not be allowed through ‘e-wallet’ and ‘cash cards’ from 08 am to 12 noon.

7) Only one booking in one user login session will be allowed between 08 am and 12 noon, except for return/onward journey.

Government Organizations for Animal Welfare

Animal Welfare Board of India:

The ‘Animal Welfare Board of India’/’AWBI’, established in the year 1960, under Section 4 of the ‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act-1960’, is a statutory advisory body, formed for advising the Government of India, on animal welfare laws.

The ‘Animal Welfare Board of India’, originally formed under the Ministry of Food & Agriculture was brought under the Ministry of Environment & Forests in the year 1990.

The ‘Animal Welfare Board of India’ has been working to promote animal welfare and to ensure that animal welfare laws in India are followed.

The 'AWBI', empowered to suggest changes to ‘laws and rules about animal welfare issues’ had published a new draft- ‘Animal Welfare Act’ in the year 2011.

The 'AWBI', authorized to grant recognition to animal welfare organizations in India, is also empowered to offer guidance to organizations and police, in interpretation and application of the rules and laws related to ‘animal welfare’ in India.

The 'AWBI' has also been providing to the animal welfare organizations in India, various types of grants to including: ‘Regular Grant’, ‘Cattle Rescue Grant’, ‘Provision of 'Shelter House' for looking after the Animals’, ‘Animal Birth Control (ABC) Programme’, ‘Provision of Ambulance for the animals in distress’ and ‘Natural Calamity grant’.

As recommended by the ‘AWBI’, which has been concerned about the abuse of animals in research, the Government of India formed a ‘Committee for the for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals’/CPCSEA.

Consequently, in the year 2001, the Government of India passed ‘Rules’ covering the 'breeding and experimentation' on animals.

The 'AWBI' was concerned about the 'cruelty to animals used in entertainment' and published a booklet, ‘Circuses –Amusement for the Un civilised’ in the year 1964.

In the year 2001 the 'AWBI' passed the ‘Performing Animals Rules’, which were amended in the years 2005 and 2012.

'National Institute of Animal Welfare'/ 'NIAW':

‘National Institute of Animal Welfare’/NIAW is a division of the Indian 'Ministry of Environment and Forests', established in the year 1999, is located in 8 acres of land in Ballabgarh of Haryana State.

‘National Institute of Animal Welfare’ /NIAW has been entrusted, by the 'Ministry of Environment and Forests' , with the task of implementing the education and training programmes at the 'NIAW' to ‘Educational Consultants India Limited’/ 'ECII'.

'NIAW' has been an apex body in the animal welfare field with a mandate covering the need to improve animal welfare through research, education and public outreach.

'NIAW' has the objective to create an enabling environment for fulfilling the statutory requirements as laid down in the ‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act-1960’.

'NIAW' has been providing training and education on various subjects related to animal welfare, including animal management, behavior and ethics.

Non-Government Organizations for Animal Welfare

'Blue Cross of India' /'BCI'(Chennai):

The ‘Blue Cross of India (Chennai), one of the largest animal welfare organizations in India, was founded in the year 1959 & registered as a society in the year 1964 and recognized by the ‘Animal Welfare Board of India’ /'AWBI' in the year 1966.

The ‘Blue Cross of India (Chennai) / BCI (Chennai), founded by Captain V. Sundaram, a member of the ‘Animal Welfare Board of India’, with the 'Motto' : “Animals- It is their World Too”, has been conducting various animal welfare programs, including the following:

Animals Rights Awareness Program,
Medical Waste Disposal,
Shelters for Animals,
Re-homing of Pet Animals,
Adoption of Pet Animals,
Animal Birth Control /ABC,
Veterinary Hospitals- Aviary clinic,
Mobile Veterinary Dispensary,
Works along with other NGO’s,
Veterinary Ambulance Services.

For the purpose of controlling and eradicating human deaths, due to dog-bites and rabies, the 'BCI' (Chennai) has been suggesting to the 'Chennai Corporation' and has been implementing an alternate method, called 'Animal Birth Control and Anti Rabies Program' / ABC-AR Program, instead of the method of 'Catching and Killing' of the stray dogs on the streets of Chennai, since the year 1964.

As per the alternative method suggested and followed by the 'BCI' (Chennai), instead of catching and killing the stray dogs, they will be caught and 'neutered' and will be administered with 'anti rabies vaccination' and will be left free back in the original places, from where they are caught.

In the year 1994, the ‘Blue Cross of India (Chennai) received, 4 acres of land and Rs 25 Lakhs, as gift & donation.

From the year 1995, the BCI (Chennai) had carried out the ‘Animal Birth Control’ &Anti Rabies /ABC-AR Program on behalf of the Chennai City Corporation and successfully reduced human deaths due to dog-bites & rabies, between 1996 and 2007.

The ‘ABC-AR’ program of the BCI (Chennai) was implemented successfully in other districts of Tamil Nadu also.

In the year 2013, the ‘Blue Cross of India’/BCI along with a student's group known as 'spaaak', opened an ‘aviary clinic’, the first aviary clinic in Chennai City to treat ailing birds, with an investment of Rs 8 Lakhs, collected by means of donations.

It is notable that in May 2013, the Government of the Republic of Mauritius, sought the assistance of BCI to introduce ‘ABC-AR’ -Program in Mauritius for controlling human deaths due to dog bites / rabies.

The Blue Cross of Hyderabad:

The ‘Blue Cross of Hyderabad’ was founded in the year 1992 & registered as a society in the year 1993 and recognized by the ‘Animal Welfare Board of India’/ AWBI.

The Blue Cross of Hyderabad was founded by Telugu Actor Mr. Akkineni Nagarjuna and Tamil Actress Mrs.Amala Akkineni, focusing on ‘Animal veterinary treatment’, ‘re-homing and rehabilitation’ of animals in the State of Telengana.

The Blue Cross of Hyderabad has been running a two-acre animal shelter, with 9 projects for the welfare of animals, with a total of 650 animals of various species.

'The Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre '/ 'WRRC':

The 'Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre'/'WRRC' was set up by the trustees of the ‘Compassion Unlimited Plus Action’/ 'CUPA' to provide relief to wild animals, birds and reptiles, including medical treatment and housing and to handle cases of cruelty to wild animals, which are injured, abused and illegally traded.

The Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre / WRRC was registered in the year 1999 as a 'Public Charitable Trust', for the conservation and welfare of wildlife in urban and rural areas around Bangalore in Karnataka State.

The ‘WRRC’ has been undertaking the following activities related to wild animals in India:

Wildlife rescue
Rehabilitation
Prevention of cruelty
Humane education
Campaigns and legal battles
Research and surveys on captive elephants.

‘Help In Suffering’/ ‘HIS’ is a registered Charitable Trust, founded in the year 1980, on a 2 acres of land in South Jaipur, for working for the benefit of animals in India.

‘Help In Suffering’/ ‘HIS’ works on 6 different animal welfare projects with 35 staff members and 3 rescue ambulances and 2 mobile clinics.

‘Help In Suffering’/ ‘HIS’ has provided refuge shelter and veterinary hospital for many animals, inside its peaceful and garden-like grounds inside its compounds and works for ‘re-homing’ of un owned / disowned animals.

‘Help In Suffering’/ ‘HIS’ has built a new specialised ‘Camel Rescue Centre’ at Bassi Village on Agra Road to serve draught camels.

‘Let's Live Together’:

‘Let's Live Together’-is an animal welfare organization especially for dogs, founded by Ms.Achala Paani, an animal welfare activist since 2005.

Ms.Achala Paani’ has been looking after the welfare of homeless animals in Bangalore with love and compassion for animals.

The project- ‘Life on the Street’ of ‘Let’s Live Together’ has been encouraging people who are interested in buying puppies for keeping as pet-dogs to adopt the homeless puppies and keep them as pets.

‘Let’s Live Together’ has been helpful in motivating and assisting more than 1000 adoptions of homeless puppies and helping to reduce the stay dogs on the streets of Bangalore.

‘Wildlife SOS’-India:

Wildlife SOS - India was established in the year 1995, by a small group of individuals inspired to start a movement and make lasting change to protect and conserve India’s natural heritage, forest and wildlife wealth.

‘Wildlife SOS’ has been actively working for: protecting wildlife in India, conserving habitats and studying bio diversity by conducting research and creating alternative and sustainable livelihoods for communities dependent on wildlife for sustenance.

The "PONGAL GIFT HAMPER"- for the year 2016, of Tamil Nadu Government, to be distributed at a cost of Rs 318 Crores, will be given in a bag with the photo of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, consisting of the following items:

1 Kg Raw Rice for Cooking Pongal,
1 Kg Sugar,
1 Piece of Sugar Cane of 2 Feet length and
Rs 100/- Cash.

The above 'Pongal Gift Hamper' of the Tamil Nadu Government will be distributed through the 'Public Distribution System'/ 'PDS' of Tamil Nadu State, to about 1.91 Crores of people, who are the holders of the following cards:

'Rice Cards' (All Green Cards and White Cards marked 'Rice Card')
All Police Family Ration Cards and
Identity Cards & Ration Cards of Srilankan Tamil People staying in 'Refugee Camps'.

It is notable that 'White Cards' marked 'Sugar Card' and 'N' Cards / No Commodity Cards are not eligible for the Tamil Nadu Government's 2016 'PONGAL GIFT HAMPER'.

According to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the above 'Pongal Gift Hamper' will help the 'poor and downtrodden' people of Tamil Nadu State, to celebrate the Tamil’s traditional festival of 'Pongal' comfortably.

Obviously, it is assumed that the people of Tamil Nadu having 'Green Cards' and 'Rice Cards' and all 'Police Family Cards' Holders are- 'Poor' and 'Downtrodden' and all others, holding 'Sugar Cards'* are 'Rich' and 'Affordable'.

* 'Sugar Cards' are one of the types of the 'Family Ration Cards' in white, with option to procure extra 'Sugar' instead of 'Rice'. It appears that, just because of their opting for 'extra sugar' instead of 'rice', the economic and social status of the 'Sugar Cards'- holders gets elevated.

Status of 'Ban on Jallikkattu'- Traditional Bravery Sport of Tamil Nadu

A ‘Bravery Sports’ called ‘Jallikkattu’,

and 'Bullock Cart Races'

wherein ‘Bulls’ would be used, had been banned in India since the year 2011, vide- the ‘2011- Notification of the Ministry of Environment and Forests’ regarding ‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’, thereby including, the 'Bulls' along with, 'Bears', 'Monkeys', 'Tigers', 'Panthers' and 'Lions'.

In May 2014, the Supreme Court of India, upheld the ‘2011 Notification by the Ministry of Environment and Forests’ to include ‘Bulls’ in the category of animals that shall not be used as performing animals, meaning that 'Bulls' could not be exhibited or trained as performing animals for the events of ‘Jallikattu’ and ‘Bullock Cart Races’.

On 07th January 2015, the Union Government of India has added the following clauses in the '2011- Notification' banning the ‘Bulls’ being used in the exhibition and training as performing animals:

“ Provided that bulls may be continued to be exhibited or trained as a performing animal, at events such as ‘Jallikattu’ in Tamil Nadu and ‘bullock cart races’ in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Kerala and Gujarat in the manner by the customs of any community or practiced traditionally under the customs or as a part of culture, in any part of the country subject to the following conditions, namely:-

(i)    such event shall take place in any District where it is being traditionally held annually, at such place explicitly permitted by the District Collector or the District Magistrate;

(ii)    bullock cart race shall be organised on a proper track, which shall not exceed two kilometres.

In case of Jallikattu,the moment the bull leaves the enclosure, it shall be tamed within a radial distance of 15 metre;

(iii)    ensure that the bulls are put to proper testing by the authorities of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department to ensure that they are in good physical condition to participate in the event and performance enhancement drugs are not administered to the bulls in any form; and

(iv)    ensure that the rights conferred upon the animals under section 3 and clause (a) and clause (m) of sub-section (1) of section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (59 of 1960) and five freedoms declared by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in its order dated 7th May, 2014 in Civil Appeal No. 5387 of 2014 are fully protected during such events:

Provided, further that any event of 'Jallikattu' or 'bullock cart races' so organised shall be held with the prior approval of the district Authorities concerned:

Provided, also further that the 'Jallikattu' or 'bullock cart races' so organised shall be duly monitored by the 'District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' and 'State Animal Welfare Board' or the 'District Authorities', as the case may be, ensuring that no unnecessary pain or suffering is inflicted or caused, in any manner, whatsoever, during the course of such events, or in preparation thereof.

The Following is the 'Update' on the above matter on 12th January 2016:

The Supreme Court of India has imposed an 'Interim Stay' on 'JALLIKKATTU on 12th January 2016, in response to a clutch of Petitions filed by 'Animals Rights Groups', including the 'Animal Welfare Board of India'/AWBI, 'People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals'-India /'PETA'-India and a Bangalore based NGO, challenging the Union Government of India's amendements / additions of Clauses, in the '2011-Notification by the Ministry of Environment & Forests regarding 'Prevention of Cruelty to Animals'

As the result of the 'Interim Stay' given by the Supreme Court of India, the 'Traditional Bravery Sport' of Tamil Nadu "JALLIKKATTU" cannot be conducted in Tamil Nadu during 2016 Pongal Celebrations in the State.

13. On 18th January 2015 Indian Mathematician- DR.VINAY VITAHAL DEODHAR died at the age of 66 years, after suffering from a debilitating disease for the last several years.

Dr.Vinay Vithal Deodhar obtained his Ph.D. in the year 1974, from the University of Mumbai, for his work on ‘Central Extensions of Rational Points of Algebraic Groups, done by him under Dr.M.S.Raghunathan.

17. On 24th January 2015 MS.AISHA CHOUDHARY died at Gurgaon in Haryana State at the age of 18 years.

Aisha Choudhary, was born in the year 1996, with an ‘immune deficiency disorder’ and she was diagnosed having ‘pulmonary fibrosis’, when she was 6 months old and she underwent a ‘bone marrow transplant’.

In the present context, 'Chennai', includes all the places such as, Chennai City, Chennai District Areas, the Sub Urban Areas of Chennai, the nearby/interlinked Districts of Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram,

During the current 'North East Monsoon' rains of the year 2015, from October 2015 to December 2015, "Chennai"received heavy rains on 9^th and 10^th November 2015. The rains had been moderate on 11th and 12th of November 2015.

Due to the continuous- heavy rains for 2 days and non -stop rains for 2 more days, as above in 'Chennai', all the the low lying areas of 'Chennai' became inundated by 13^th November 2015.

Again on 15^th and 16^th November 2015 'Chennai' received heavy rains and most of the areas of 'Chennai' became fully flooded with rain-water by 17^th November 2015.

Due to the flooding rain waters, roads and streets in 'Chennai' were full of water and various types of 'boats' had replaced the motor cycles and cars etc.

On many roads and streets in 'Chennai', including 'Anna Salai' boats were used for moving people standered in the floods to safer places.

Many vehicles, especially cars and buses got immersed in the flood waters on many road and streets of 'Chennai'.

After 2 weeks, on 01^st December 2015 'Chennai' received heavy rains flooding the roads, streets, railways tracks in Chennai Egmore and Chennai Central Railway Stations,

Many subways in 'Chennai' were full of water and vehicles had been immersed inside water in the subways.

Chennai International Airport was closed from 2nd December 2015 to 6th December 2015 as the runways and the ground floors were full of flood waters.

Many residential and commercial areas in 'Chennai' were submerged in flood waters.

Due to the flooding of rain water, around and even inside many of the hospitals in 'Chennai' were closed and the in-patients had to be transferred out of such hospitals to safer places.

The flood waters entered the 'MIOT Hospitals', in Mount Poonamalle Road, Manappakkam and due to lack of power supply and 'oxygen'-cylinders, 14 patients in the ICU of the MIOT Hospitals died.

The 'Global Hospitals' in Perumbakkam was submerged in flooding waters and the 'MRI' -Scan Room of the Global Hospital was full of water.

Due to the flooding waters of the heavy rains, many people staying on the banks of the 'Adyar /Couvam Rivers' in huts and even people living in concrete- roofed houses and apartments became homeless.

The houses in the 'Ground Floors' of independent houses and apartments got submerged in the flooding waters, causing many deaths, sufferings and loss / damage of domestic possessions, especially, Televisions, Sofa sets, Kitchen items including LPG Gas Cylinders.

Many two wheeler and four wheeler parked in the basements/ parking places and in the Ground Floors / on the roads were submerged in the flooding waters and obviously got damaged.

Some people, including soldiers of the Indian Army and volunteers, boldly walked in waters up to their hips and in some places even up to their shoulders and carried their kids and pet dogs to safer places.

Soldiers of the 'Indian Army' and the 'India Navy' and the members of the 'National Disaster Relief Force'/'NDRF' , 'OLA Boats' and many 'Volunteers' from various 'Non Government Organizations' / 'NGO's participated in the 'Rescue Operations' of the people stranded in the floods submerged houses, using Motor Boats& Fishing- Row Boats belonging to the fishermen of 'Chennai' and Rescue boats/ Floats.

When people had been stranded in their houses, being unable to go out of the flooded areas, food, cloths and medicines were supplied to them using helicopters by the Military, Government and Non Government Agencies.

The Prime Minister of India, Mr.Narendra Modi made an 'Aerial Survey' of the 'Flood Affected Areas' of 'Chennai' on 03rd December 2015, from a helicopter.

According to the officials of the ‘Chennai City Corporation’, about 57,000 houses, mostly those of working class, in the Chennai City had suffered structural damage.

Earlier, 'Chennai' had received heavy rains in the years 2010 and 2005

However, it is reported that the heavy rains during the period from 9th November 2015 to 01st December 2015, has been the heaviest rainfall in the past 100 years of the history of Chennai.

PM Modi's visit to South Korea was a part of India’s 'East Asia Policy' and to promote his ‘Make in India Programme’ among the Korean Investors

11. PM Modi visited Dhaka in BANGLADESH from 6th June 2015 to 7th June 2015 for 2 days as a State Visit.

During the visit to Bangladesh PM Modi discussed with H.E.Shekh Hasina, the PM of Bangladesh, the ratification of the 'India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement-1974 and the Protoclol-2011'.

During the visit to Bangladesh, PM Modi also met H.E.Mr.Md.Abdul Hamid, the President of Bangladesh.

PM Modi's visit to Bangladesh is expected to further expand the cordial and cooperative relationship between India and Bangladesh and also strengthen the friendship and trust between the two countries.

It is reported that because of his being a pure vegetarian, he avoided joining the Indian Military Services, at the time when he was in search of a job.

Nambiar was said to take food prepared by his wife Ms.Rukmini only and he had never taken any outside food throughout his career and life.

He is said that he would feed the first morsel of his food to his wife and then only he would eat his food.

And whenever, he would be without his wife, (only during his pilgrimage to Sabari Mala) , he would feed the first morsel of his food to his sons and then only he would eat his food.

M.N.Nambiar had been a Hindu Spiritual Leader, making regular annual pilgrimage to Sabari Mala- And he was the ‘Guruswamy’ in the ‘Sabarimala Pilgrimage’ of many celebrities of South Indian Cinema Field-And he was also called the ‘Maha Guruswamy’.

Nambiar had started his first pilgrimage to Sabari Malai with his Guru 'Nawab Rajamanickam', in the year 1942.

And there after he had been regularly going on his annual pilgrimage to Sabari Malai.

Nambiar had been visiting the shrine Sabari Malai, for more than 55 times, taking group of many people under his guidance and leadership.

He had been a ‘Senior Guruswamy’ to many Movie Actors, since many years.

Notably, M.N.Nambiar died during the ‘Sabari Mala Season’, which is considered by his disciples and fans, to be blessing of Lord Ayyappa Swamy of Sabari Mala.

What is a ‘Digital Locker’ /"DIGI Locker"?

‘Digital Locker’ / “ DIGI Locker” is one of the key initiatives under the ‘Digital India’ Programme of the Union Government of India of PM Narendra Modi, formed in February 2015 and launched in July 2015.

‘Digital Locker’ is a virtual online ‘Safety Locker’, similar to a ‘Safety Locker’ in a Bank, which can be used by the Indian 'Residents' using the 'Aadhar Number', issued by the 'Unique Identity Authority of India' /UIDAI.

It is an external website that opens in a new window, in which the ‘Registered Users’ can store their ‘E-Documents’ with their ‘E-Signatures’, in a ‘secure dedicated and personal’ electronic space of Maximum 1 GB.

The ‘Digital Locker’ can be used, for storing their important documents, such as, School, College, University Certificates, IT PAN cards, Family Ration Cards, Voter Id Cards, and the URI's of the ‘e-documents’ issued by various issuer departments, etc.

A beta Version of the ‘Digital Locker’ has been released by the ‘Department of Electronics and Information Technologies’ /DEITY of the Union Government of India.

What are the ‘Objectives’ of the ‘Digital Locker System’?:-

The Following are the ‘Objectives’ of the ‘Digital Locker System’:

To enable 'Digital Empowerment of Residents of India', by providing them with ‘Digital Locker’ on the Cloud,

To enable ‘E-Signing’ of the documents and make them available electronically and online,

To minimize the use of Physical Documents /Hard Paper Copies,

To ensure authenticity of the e-documents and thereby,

To eliminate usage of fake documents,

To reduce the administrative overhead of the Government Departments and Agencies and

To make it easy for the residents to receive services,

To provide “Anytime, Anywhere Access” /’AAA’ to the documents by the residents,

To open an inter operable standards based architecture to support a well-structured standard document format,

To support easy sharing of documents across departments and agencies and

To ensure privacy and allow only authorized access to the residents’ data

To secure access to Government issued documents through a ‘Web Portal’ and ‘Mobile Applications’ for the residents of India,

Who Can make use of the ‘Digital Locker’ Facility?:

The ‘Resident’ -Indian Citizens, with ‘Aadhar Number’, issued by the ‘Unique Identity Authority of India’ / ‘UIDAI’, can make use of the ‘Digital Locker Facility’.

Components of Digital Locker System:

‘Digital Locker Repository’ is a Collection of e-Documents which are uploaded by issuers in a standard format and exposing a set of standard APIs for secure real-time search and access.

‘Access Gateway’ provides a secure online mechanism for requesters to access e-documents from various repositories in real-time using e-Document, 'Uniform Resource Indicator'/ 'URI'.

The ‘Uniform Resource Indicator’ / ‘URI’ is a link to the e-Document uploaded by an issuer in a repository.

The gateway will identify the address of the repository where the e-Document is stored based on the Uniform Resource Indicator / URI and will fetch the e-Document from that repository.

With the launching of 'DIGI Locker', the number of uses of 'Aadhar Number' has increased by one more benefit.

All the Indian Citizens, who may like to make use the unique- 'Digital Locker' Facility offered by the Union Government of India, will be taking steps to obtain 'Aadhar Number' and 'Aadhar Card', in case if they have not yet obtained the same, not realizing the utilities of 'Aadhar Card' in India.

The 'DIGI Locker' Facility has given a boost to the 'Aadhar Card' System of Unique Identity in India.

To use the Union Government of India's 'Digital Locker' / 'DIGI Locker' Faciliy, Launched in July 2015, under the 'Digital India Programme of PM Narendra Modi, you will have to Register online/ Sign On in the 'Portal' of the 'Digital Locker',

The Portal / Web-site of the 'Digital Locker' is 'User-Friendly' and you will find it easy to register, upload your e-documents and make use of the various facilities offered by it.

You can register in the 'Digital Locker', using your 'Aadhar Number' and your 'Mobile Phone with the same Number'- Registered with 'UIDAI', at the time of obtaining your 'Aadhar Number'/Card.

How To Register /Sign On for ‘Digital Locker Facility?:

Step 1:

Visit the ‘Portal’ /Web-site of the ‘Digital Locker’ using the following Link: https://digitallocker.gov.in/ -An External website / portal will open in a new window

Step 2:

‘Sign On’, using your ‘Aadhar Number’Enter your ‘Aadhar Number' in the box provided for the purpose in the ‘Sign On’ Block and - Fill in the Characters Shown in the Second Block-

Step 3 :

After clicking the 'Submbit' Button you will receive a notification in the block saying that a 6 Digits- ‘One Time Password’ /OTP has been sent to your Registered Mobile Number and /or to your Registered ‘E-Mail’ Address

Step 4:

Enter the ‘One Time Password’/OTP received in your Registered Mobile or E Mail in the space provided for entering the OTP

Step 5 :

Click the ‘Validate’ Button which will appear in the Box-

After completing all the above Steps, you will redirected to the “My certificate”- section where you can upload your e-documents for storing and sharing.

Structure of the Digital Locker :-

Each user’s ‘Digital Locker’ has the following sections, namely, (A) My Certificates, (B) My Issuer, (C) My Requester, (D) Directories and (E) My Profile:

(A) My Certificates:

This section has two sub sections:

i) Digital Documents:

This contains the URI's of the documents issued to the user by Govt. departments or other agencies and

ii) Uploaded Documents:-

How to ‘Upload’ your Document in ‘Digital Locker’?:

You will see the page with 3 Boxes: 1.Select Document, 2. Upload Document and 3. Description

1.Select Document:

In this section you will find the names of more than 17 documents for uploading; you may choose your document to be stored in the Digital Locker

2. Upload Document:

You may upload your document for storing in any one of the following file formats:

pdf/jpg/jpeg/png/bmp/gif, of size not exceeding 1 MB each

3.Description of the Document Uploaded :

You can describe or label the document in not more than 50 characters.

After completion of the above 3 steps, you may click the ‘Upload’ button.

After successful uploading of the document you will get a ‘Success’ Notification.

You can download your document uploaded in the ‘Digital Locker’ using the downloading-‘link’ of the document and store it in the computer and / or send to any other person / as per your requirement/s.

(B) My Issuer :

This section will display the issuers' names and the number of documents issued to the user by the issuer.

(C) My Requester :

This section will display the requesters' names and the number of documents requested from the user by the requesters.

(D) Directories :

This section displays the complete list of registered issuers and requesters along with their URLs.

This section will display the complete profile of the user as available in the UIDAI database.

Steps to Register for ‘Digital Locker’:-

Steps For 'Residents':

Keep Ready on Hand the Aadhaar number and Mobile Number Registered with UIDAI at the time of obtaining 'Aadhar Card'-

Enter your 'Aadhaar Number' on the 'Login Field

A One Time Password /OTP will be sent on Registered Mobile Number

Enter the OTP in the field -An 'e-Know Your Customer' /e-KYC will be done with UIDAI

Once your e-KYC is successful, you can view the 'URI's of e-Documents which have been uploaded into the 'Digital Lockers' by various issuers.-

Residents can also upload e-documents in their Digital Locker and e-Sign them. -

Residents can share private documents with 'Requesters' by sharing a link to the e-Document to the email address of the requester.

Steps For 'Issuers':

An Issuer needs to register on Digital Locker System to get a Unique Issuer ID. -

Once an ID is assigned, Issuer can upload the documents in a standard XML format in the 'designated repository' using repository service provider API. -

Each document uploaded in the repository will have unique URI comprising of Issuer ID, Document Type and Document ID.-

The document URI will be pushed to the concerned resident’s Digital Locker based on his / her Aadhaar number.

Steps For 'Requesters':

A 'Requester' needs to first register with an 'Access Gateway' to on board Digital Locker system. -

A Requester can use document URI's to securely retrieve the documents from the repository through an 'Access Gateway'.

'E-Sign'- Service in Digital Locker Facility :

The ‘e-sign service’ of the ‘Digital Locker System’ is in the 'pre-production phase' and hence can be used for testing purpose only.

The legal validity of e-Sign is not assured during the testing phase.

"TERE BIN LADEN":

The 2010 - Hindi Movie ‘Tere Bin Laden’, starring the 'Pakistani Pop-Singer-Actor- Ali Zafar' is with a story dealing with the controversial issue of Al –Qaeda Chief Osama Bin Laden.

According to the ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/ CBFCP, the movie is said to contain 'vulgar &objectionable dialogues', abuses and derogatory remarks about Pakistan.

So, the movie 'Tere Bin Laden' was banned in Pakistan, as the movie might lead to riots and attacks by the extremists and terrorists.

"LAHORE":

Is a 2010- Hindi 'Sports (Kick Boxing)' Movie, based on 'American Martial Arts'- ‘Best of the Best, is directed by 'Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan', starring debutantes Aanaahad and Shraddha Das, along with many veteran actors.

The story of the movie ‘Lahore’ is about an 'International Kick Boxing Tournament', in which the Indian Boxer defeats the Pakistani Boxer and the 'Pakistani Boxers' agitate and attack the Indian Boxers and the audience.

The ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/CBFCP banned the movie ‘Lahore’, as the plot of the movie portrayed the Pakistanis in bad light and because of some of the scenes and dialogues in the movie were against the Pakistanis.

"DIRTY PICTURE" :

The 2011- Hindi Movie 'Dirty Picture' is based on the real life of South Indian / 'Tamil Glamourous Actress Silk Smitha', starring Vidya Balan, considered to be the Sex Symbol of Bollywood.

The Movie ‘Dirty Picture’ was certified by the ‘Central Board of Film Certification’ /CBFC in India under ‘A’ / 'Adults Only' Rating.

The 'Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan'/ CBFCP termed tha movie-'Dirty Picture' as 'Bold and Vulgar' and totally banned in Pakistan.

"KHILADI 786":

The 2012- Hindi movie-'Khiladi 786', starring the ‘Khiladi of Bollywood'- Akshay Kumar, Asin, Raj Babar and Mithun Chakraborty is directed by Ashish R Mohan.

According to the ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/CBFCP, the use of the sacred number of Muslims ‘786’ in a comedy movie acted by a ‘Non-Muslim’ (Sikh) Indian Actor was considered to be hurting their Islamic sentiments.

The movie 'Khiladi 786' and its promo were totally banned in Pakistan, immediately after launching of the movie's posters in Pakistan.

"EK THA TIGER" :

The 2012- Movie- ‘Ek The Tiger’ starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif is a movie with a story of altercations between the 'The Research & Analysis Wing'/ RAW of the Foreign Intelligence Agency of India' and 'The Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence'/ISI of Pakistan.

According to the ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/CBFCP, the movies with themes on ‘Anti-Terrorism and against Pakistan’s National Institutions and Security Agencies, are against the national interest of Pakistan and they are to be banned by them.

The ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/CBFCP, had declared the movie ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ as problematic and banned the movie in Pakistan.

"AGENT VINOD" :

The 2012 movie- ‘Agent Vinod’, an Indian Action Spy Movie, starring Saif Ali Khan and directed by Sriram Raghavan, is with a plot establishing that the 'The Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence'/ ISI of Pakistan as an ‘Anti-Indian’ element.

The Pakistani High Commands and Spies have been shown in the movie ‘Agent Vinod’, to be supporting the 'Talibans' in setting off a ‘Nuclear Bomb’ in New Delhi, India.

According to the CBFC of Paikstan, the movie 'Agent Vinod' contains controversial references to the Pakistani Spy Agency - ISI.

So, the movie ‘Agent Vinod’ was banned in Pakistan a few days before the scheduled release of the movie by the ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/CBFCP.

"BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG":

The 2013 -Hindi movie ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ is based on the real story of the Indian Athlete Milkha Singh, who became the ‘Flying Sikh of India’.

The movie 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' is a good 'Motivational and Inspiring Movie' of and in India, about a common Indian coming up in life by improving upon his talents.

According to the ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/ CBFCP, the movie ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ does not portray Pakistan in good light.

Also there is a dialogue in the Movie delivered by Milkha Singh (Farhan Akhtar): “Mujse Nahin Hoga, Main Pakistan Nahin Jaaungaa”, meaning -"I cannot do it; I will not go to Pakistan"

So the movie ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ was totally banned in Pakistan.

"DAVID" :

‘David’ is a 2013- Indian Hindi Action-Thriller Movie, directed by Bejoy Nambiar, starring Tamil Actor Vikram, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vinay Virmani, Tabu, Lara Dutta, Monica Dogra and Isha Sharvani.

According to the ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/CBFCP, the movie ‘David’:

Is against the reality of Pakistan and the Religion of Islam and

Has shown the Muslim ‘Muharram Procession’ totally in a wrong way, without respect for the ideologies of the Muslims.

So, the movie-‘David’ was totally banned in Pakistan by the ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/CBFCP.

It is notable that, the Muslims in India also had expressed their displeasure about the movie and demanded for the removal of the contents objectionable to them from the movie -‘David’, for the same reasons quoted by the ‘Central Board of Film Censors of Pakistan’/CBFCP, while banning the movie in Pakistan.

"RAANJHANAA" :

'Raanjhanaa' a 2013- Indian Hindi Romantic Drama Movie, directed by Anand L. Rai, starring Tamil Actor Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol, is the first Bollywood Movie of Dhanush.

The story of the movie 'Raanjhanaa' is about the one sided love of a Hindu boy with a Muslim Girl.

Initially, the Movie 'Fire' was certified with the Rating-‘A’/Adults Only, with a condition that the name of the character in the movie must be changed from ‘Sita’ to ‘Nita’,

The movie 'Fire' was screened on 13th November 1998 in India and was running ‘House Full’ in Metro Centers throughout India for more about 3 weeks.

As the movie 'Fire' had explicitly shown the homosexual relations,creating protests against and triggered discussions on homosexuality and freedom of speech in India

However, the ‘Shiv Sena' started open protest against the movie 'Fire' on 02nd December 1998 and the Members of the Shiv Sena'/Shiv Sainiks' attacked the theatres in Mumbai, Delhi, Surat and Kolkata which screened the movie 'Fire' and stopped further screening of the movie.

The 'Bajrang Dal' and the 'Bhartiya Janatha Party'/ 'BJP' members joined the 'Shiv Sena' in the protests against the movie 'Fire'.

Though some of the protesters were arrested, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Manohar Joshi was in favour of the protesters against the movie 'Fire' and justified their unlawful actions against the movie, screened with proper certification from the Government of India authorities.

So, the movie was referred back to the 'Central Board of Film Certification’/ CBFC for re-examination of their certificate on 4th December 1998.

Protests had been staged by both the supporters and the agitators against the movie ‘Fire’ from 5th December 1998, until the movie was finally approved by for screening.

Ban on the Movie 'Fire' Lifted:

However, the movie was screened from 26th February 1999, subsequent to the approval of the 'Central Board of Film Certification’/ CBFC without any cut on 12th February 1999.

7."UNFREEDOM":-

‘Unfreedom’ is an Indian Drama Movie which was inspired by Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s poem- ‘Ye Dagh Dagh Ujala’,

The Movie 'Un Freedom' was produced and directed by Raj Amit Kumar,
The Movie 'Un Freedom' was released in USA on 29th May 2015.

Why the Movie 'Un Freedom' was not approved by the Central Board of Film Certification CBFC?:

The Movie- 'Un Freedom' was with a story of a 'Muslim Fundamentalist' in New York kidnapping a 'Liberal Muslim Scholar' for killing and a 'Lesbian' in New Delhi kidnapping her 'Bisexual Lover' for love making.

The Movie- 'Un Freedom' was refused approval by the 'Central Board of Film Certification’/ CBFC for release for public screening.

The Revising Committee of the 'Central Board of Film Certification’/ CBFC suggested some cuts in the movie.

The movie’s producer-cum-director Raj Amit Kumar was unwilling to make the suggested cuts.

Raj Amit Kumar appealed to the ‘Information and Broadcasting Appellate Tribunal’of the Union Government of India, against the 'Central Board of Film Certification’/ CBFC 's suggestions for the cuts.

In response to the appeal, shockingly, the movie was 'completely banned', ignoring the suggestions for the cuts, and the director Raj Amit Kumar has been continuously demanding unconditional release of his movie, via internet and petitions to the 'Central Board of Film Certification’/ CBFC.

8. "INDIA'S DAUGHTER":-

‘India's Daughter’ is an Indian Movie, which is a part of the BBC’s ‘Story Ville Series’,directed by Leslee Udwin,

The movie 'India's Daughter' was released in English and Hindi, on 4th March 2015,

The movie 'India's Daughter is based on the ‘2012 Delhi Gang Rape’ incident, in which a 23 year old ‘Physiotherapy’-paramedical student Ms.Nirbhaya was gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi and murdered

The movie-‘India’s Daughter’ was scheduled to be telecast on the television channels worldwide on 8th March 2015, on the 'International Women’s Day’.

The Indian Police obtained a court stay order prohibiting the telecast of the movie in India.

So, the movie ‘India’s Daughter was telecast in all the other television channels except of and in India.

The movie was uploaded in ‘You Tube’ and the Indian Government directed the ‘You Tube’ to block the video in India.

Despite appeal from the movie’s director to lift the ban, the Government of India has rejected his appeal as the appeals by the convicts in the '2012 Gang Rape and Murder in Moving Bus Case' has been heard by the Supreme Court of India.

The lovemaking scenes of the Journalist and the 'Computer Hacker', the 'Computer Hacker’s torturing of a man who rapes her and a 'Lesbian lovemaking scene' of the 'Computer Hacker', had been all objectionable to the 'Central Board of Film Certification'/CBFC.

The Director of the movie David Fincher was not willing to make any cut in the movie for release in any country including India.

Also, the 'Central Board of Film Certification’/ CBFC was not ready to suggest any cut in the movie, as the board was committed to maintaining and protecting the vision of the director of the movie. However, as per the guidelines for certifying a movie for screening in India, the movie-'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' has not been approved by the CBFC.

Name of the Dam: PUZHAL LAKE or THE RED HILLS LAKE:-

Type: Reservoir, Area: 4500 Acres /19.6 Crores Sq Ft.,

Depth: Average Depth 50 Feet,

Capacity: 330 Crores Cubic Feet,

Location: Ponneri, Thiruvallur

The Puzhal Lake was built in the year 1876 by the British Government of India

The lake is meant to store the waters received from the 'Krishna River' of Andhra Pradesh, under the 'Telugu Ganga Project', through the 'Poondi Reservoir' and the 'Sholavaram Lake'

Till the year 2012 the 'Water Resources Department'/WRD of the State Government of Tamilnadu has been doing the maintenance work at Rs 5 Lakhs per year

Due to the continuous rains in November 2015, the lake is having waters of about 225 Crores Cubic Feet as against the full capacity of 330 Crores Cubic Feet (About 68 % of the Total Capacity)

Name of the Dam: CHEMBARAMBAKKAM LAKE:-

Type: Reservoir,

Area: 3800 acres /16.55 Crores Sq Ft.,

Capacity: 364.5 Crores Cubic Feet,

Height of Full Capacity: 85 Feet,

Location: Near Chinglepet, Kanchipuram District at 40 kms from Chennai,

The Main Outflow:

Adyar River originates from this lake and the waters overflowing from this lake will be sent to Adyar River

There are 2 pipelines from the lake's water treatment plant for drinking water supply to the city

Name of the Lake: PORUR RETTERI (Rettai Lake- Meaning Double Lake) :-

Type: Reservoir,

Area: 200 Acres / 87.12 Lakhs Sq Ft.,

Capacity: 4.6 Crores Cubic Feet,

Location: Porur -behind the Chennai Bye Pass Bridge

The Porur Lake is a 'Temporary Catchment Area' connected with the Sembarmbakkam Lake

In the year 2012, the 'Water Resources Department' 'WRD of the State Government of Tamilnadu had initiated a project for deepening the lake by 1 Metre more to increase the capacity to 7 Crores Cubit Feet

Name of the Lake: KOLATHUR RETTERI (‘Rettai Lake’- Meaning Double Lake):-

Type: Reservoir,

Area: 700 Acres / 3.04 Crores Sq Ft.,

Location: Kolathur Near Red Hills Road Junction, The 'Grand Northern Trunk Road' /GNT Road passes through the lake

Water Source: Water from Red Hills Reservoir and the Korattur Lake

Uses of Kolathur Retteri: The lake had been a source of drinking water

Visits by Birds in Seasons:

Many species of migratory birds, including the common 'Tailor Birds', the 'Purple Rumped Sun Birds' and the 'Asian Open Bill Storks' have been visiting the lake areas periodically in seasons

Plans for Improvement of Kolathur Retteri:

The 'Water Resources Department' /WRD of the State Government of Tamilnadu has planned to make improvements to the lake along with the Ambattur lake and the Korattur Lake at a cost of Rs 85 Crores, by:

Removing the vegetations,
Desilting, providing Boating Facilities and
Developing a Park along the 3 KMs bund of the lake with
Planting of various species of 'Medicional' and 'Flowering' saplings for attracting Birds and Butterflies and
Creating a Walkers’ Path

Name of the Lake: AMBATUR LAKE:-

Type: Reservoir ,

Area: 3800 Acres '16.55 Crores Sq Ft.,

Location: Ambatur, Chennai ,

Source: Rain Waters ,

The Main Outflow : The Adyar River-

Uses of the Ambatur Lake: The lake has been catering to the Drinking Water needs of the city

Ambatur Lake is of a Chain of 3 Lakes, namely:

1.Ambatur Lake,

2. Korttur Lake and

3.Madhavaram Lake

Surplus in any one would be transferred to the other/s-

The Lake was filled in completely in November 2008 due to continuous 'North-East Monsoon Rains'

The lake will be dry in summer days normally, as there would be no sufficient rain fall in the city for over the past 6 years until November 2015

Name of the Lake: MANALI MADHAVARAM LAKE:-

Type: Reservoir ,

Area: 150 Acres /65.34 Lakhs Sq Ft., Reduced to 100 Acres due to dumping of garbage and sewage ,

Location: Manali-Mathur-Madhavaram, Chennai

Madhavaram Lake is of a chain of the 3 Lakes of:

1. Ambattur Lake,

2. Madhavaram Lake and

3.Korattur Lake

The surplus of water from one lake would be transferred to the other/s

Many species of birds were reported to have been visiting the wetland 20 years back-In the year 2009 the lake had been cleaned by some volunteers from a college at Madhavaram

Name of the Lake: KORATTUR LAKE:-

Type: Reservoir,

Area: 990 Acres/4.31 Crores Sq Ft.,

Location: Korattur in West Chennai to the north of Chennai-Arakkonam Railway Tracks

Korattur Lake is of a chain of the 3 Lakes of:

1. Ambattur Lake,

2. Madhavaram Lake and

3.Korattur Lake

The surplus of water from one lake would be transferred to the other/s/

Before the year 1970 the water from the lake had been used for drinking water supply to the city-

Afterwards the lake water became contaminated by the sewage and industrial wastes from the nearby areas of Pattaravakkam, Athipet and Ambattur

Plans for Improvement of the Korattur Lake:

In the year 2013 the State Government’s 'Water Resources Department' / WRD had planned to improve all the 3 lakes including the Korattur Lake with parks and walkways

Name of the Lake: CHETPUT LAKE:-

Type: Pond, Area: 15 Acres/ 6.53 Lakhs Sq Ft.,

Location: Chetput, Chennai- to the north of the Chetput Railway Station

Chetput Lake belongs to the 'Department of Fisheries' of the State Government of Tamilnadu

Uses of the Chetput Lake:

The lake had been a source of 'Non –Drinking Water' for the use in the City

The lake’s water being non-saline, fish of some varieties such as , Rohu, Catla and Mrigal are breeding in the lake

Plans for the Improvement of the Chetput Lake:

It is one of the 12 lakes in Chennai identified for an ‘Eco-Restoration Project’ of the ‘Environment Department’ of the State Government of Tamilnadu- The project from the year 2005, at a budget of Rs 6 Crores has got plans for the Development of the following around the lake:

A Boat Club,
An Aquarium,
Sea Food Stall,
Fish Court and a
Walkway

In May 2012, Chennai City Corporation has resolved to construct a 1,475 Metres long Storm Water Drain from the lake into the 'Cooum River' at a cost of Rs 2.29 Crores for draining excess water during heavy monsoon rains

In the year 2013 there have been plans at a cost of Rs 42 Crores for developing the lake with facilities for:

‘Angling’,
Water Sports,
Boating and
Open Air Auditoriums

The shore of the lake would have an Eco Park with Tracks for 'Walkers and Joggers' and Children’s Play Areas and a Sea Food Restaurant

Also there are plans for an elevated link between Chetpet railway station and the Eco Park, infrastructure connecting Poonamallee High Road with the park, and construction of a box culvert beneath the railway tracks to connect the lake with Cooum River near Spur Tank Road

The foundation for the park planned in a 15-acre area adjoining the lake was laid in the year 2014-

However, all the plans would take their own time to be completed

Name of the Lake: CHITLAPAKKAM LAKE:-

Type: Reservoir,

Area: 86.86 Acres / 37.83 Lakhs Sq Ft.,

Location: Chitlapakkam, Chennai,

The location of the Chitlapakkam lake had been 'Agricultural Land' in the past years

In the year 2003, the lake bunds were strengthened by raising the height to 10 feet and increasing the storage capacity of the lake

Due to lack under-ground drainage systems in the nearby houses, the lake waters got contaminated by the drainage waters and sewage from the commercial establishment around the lake on the GST Road passed into the lake

A 'Wastages Dump Yard' has been near the lake since many years

There have been some plans for the improvement of the lake at and estimate of Rs 45 Lakhs out of which 15 Lakhs were from the Public and the balance of Rs 30 Lakhs from the State Government

In February 2013 the works for a 750 Metres long pathway, a garden around the lake and Boating Facilities in the lake, at a cost of Rs 45 Lakhs had commenced

Name of the Lake: SHOLAVARAM LAKE:-

Type: Reservoir,

Capacity: 31, 112 Cubic Feet,

Location: Ponneri, Thiruvallur,

Due to lack of rains in the past 6 years there is very little water in the lake

Name of the Lake: VELACHERY LAKE:-

Location: Velachery,

Area: 55 Acres / 23.96 Laksh Sq Ft.,

Due to contamination to the water in the lake, by sewage passed into the lake from the houses nearby without under ground drainage connections,the plans of boating have been staggered by the Corporation of Chennai City

Name of the Lake: MUGAPPAIR MANGAL LAKE:-

Type: Reservoir,

Area: 5.32 Acres/ 2.32 Lakhs Sq Ft.,

Location: Mugappair, Chennai

Earlier the lake had been a good source of water for the Mugappair area

Due to the industries of the Ambattur Industrial Estate the lake got contaminated

In the year 2005, renovation work of the lake with a compound wall around the lake for an area of 30 Acres at a cost of Rs 20 Lakhs commenced-

In July 2009, the first phase of the work with a walkers’ track of 4.5 Metres width and 520 Metres long with lighting facilities was completed at a cost of 60 Lakhs

In the second phase of the plans for the improvement of the lake at a cost of Rs 25 Lakhs, space for 'Children’s Play Area' and a 'Park' have been provided and the work for which is yet to commence

The ‘Achalathamman Temple’ is on the bank of the lake

Name of the Lake: PALLAVARAM PERIYA LAKE ( Pallavaram Big Lake):-

Type: Reservoir

Area: Originallly of 200 Acres-87.12 Lakhs Sq Ft/

Location: Pallavaram, on the east of the Railway Track between Pallavaram and Chromepet /

The large lake dried up and got polluted by Industrial waste waters from the Leather Factories at Chromepet and garbage dumped into the lake area-

The nearby area behind 'Lakshmi Nagar' and' Ganapathipuram' is used as a ‘Burrial site’ and a place for funeral rituals

There is not much of water in the so called big lake

A road connecting Chromepet/Pallavaram with Thoraippakkam passes through the middle of the lake

Borewells for draining water for commercial water supplies through lorries have been dug in the areas of the lake
