Have you started your scholarship search? Here is some advice.

A friend of mine recently decided to go back to school.

I suggested that he try to use the time between now and then to search for scholarships - FREE money for school that he did not have to pay back.

I gave him my Nontrads Scholarship page link here: Scholarships Links and Tips Page One.

It is a good starting point if you are just beginning to start your search for good scholarships. These sites listed are totally free. You can register at many of them and give your personal search terms.

That way the sites will send you only links and scholarship pages that YOU WANT to pursue. You don't have to go through scholarship links one by one and pick them out yourself any more.

Of course, there are some sites that still are like this (like this one!) but the better sites are so automated now it saves you a LOT of time.

I also said to keep all his work organized and in a file cabinet or box. That way, you don't apply twice to the same school, or register at a site twice. PLUS, you can check back after due dates and see if you need to redo anything.

The very best of luck to everyone who is searching for a scholarship. After all, wouldn't it be better if you could get scholarships or grants to PAY for your schooling? You bet!

Are you interested in a career in gems or Jewelry?

GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, offers scholarships in many locations, such as CArlsbad and New York (US), London, Hong Kong, Moscow, Toyko, and more countries. Here is a map to see them all.

This sounds like a fascinating area of study. The Graduate Gemologist is the highest professional credential and helps people grade jewels and protect the consumer.

Nursing Students - will you help combat nursing home abuse in the future?

Nursing students - are you in school and going back next year?

NASNHA, the National Association to Stop Nursing Home Abuse, has a new $5,000 scholarship just for nurse students who are already in nursing school. It is called the Awareness and Prevention Scholarship.

The scholarship helps nursing students "pursuing a degree that will help combat nursing home abuse" (from their website).

Utah Scholarship links I found and posted today.

Scholarship News - I found many links from Utah today.

I updated the Utah Nontraditional Student page today. I have added some scholarships to the page. And I loved this photo I found today also.

While looking up Nontraditional student links, I lucked out on a nontraditional student group on Meetup. They let me join in order to check out the site and see when events will be coming up.

Of course, I had to add them to the Utah page at the Nontrad site after that. Then I added scholarships and articles as well, to round out the page and make it match the other state and country pages that have been updated so far.

So you will find many links there to look into if you live in Utah or plan to go to school there.

I found this photo (above) of King's Peak when I was looking for header pictures for the Utah page. There are some very lovely sites in Utah, that's for sure. I added a smaller version of this picture to the new page.

Get a Digital and New Media Scholarship - New!

New Digital and New Media Scholarship from AP and Google!

This $20,000 scholarship is new and will be administered by the Online News Association.

The deadline is January 27th. Here is a little about this new scholarship from the website:

"The AP-Google Journalism and Technology Scholarship program will provide $20,000 scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year to six promising undergraduate or graduate students pursuing or planning to pursue degrees at the intersection of journalism, computer science and new media."

Winners of this scholarship will also get a membership to the Online News Association for one year and can attend the 2012 Conference in San Francisco.

Tips on Finding and Securing Scholarships

Here is a neat article I ran across today. It is by Rebecca Ruiz at the New York Times Education blogs section online.

Ms. Ruiz gives some great tips here from Mark Kantrowitz, who publishes the Finaid.org and Fastweb sites I have written about here before. These are quality sites that help you find scholarships that pertain to each scholarship searcher.

Here are some tips that I liked:

#1. Apply for LOTS of scholarships - not just a few.

#2. Don't worry about rejections. Keep applying.

#3. Use online databases to find scholarships.

A current college student had some tips too. One was to ask family and friends whether they knew of scholarship opportunities. (He found one this way).

He also said to send thank-you notes after interviews.

The new Karsh Scholarship Program at Duke U. helps international students

This program sounds great.

Students from all around the world are now being helped to attend college at prestigious Duke University through the new Karsh International Scholarship program.

The awards include financial aid to attend college, plus other needed support which helps students adapt to the culture here. The Scholarship program helps students get internships in the summertime too.

What a great idea. And the cultural benefits go both ways.

Santa's Top Ten Scholarship Sites for 2011 - make that the Betsyanne Top Ten

Well, make that Betsyanne's Top Ten for 2011.

But wouldn't it be great if Santa Claus carried Scholarships and Grants to people as well as gifts? It WOULD be a terrific gift to get a scholarship this year, wouldn't it?

There are many scholarships listed on this blog you are reading. But the sites below are even better. Many of them have built-in databases, and can email you when a scholarship matches your criteria.

These are handy (and free) sites that you can go to anytime to register or just search for scholarships or grants you are interested in. #2 also has lists of internships. Many of the sites also include data for graduate students and provide articles and help for your scholarship search.

Here are my NEW Top 10 Scholarship and Scholarship Advice Sites for 2011:

1. The Fastweb site. This site is rated #1 on more than one website and blog.
2. The Fatomei/Dr. Torres pages. These pages have links to unusual and hard-to-find scholarships, grants, and much more.
3. (of course!) The Official U.S. FAFSA page. This is the FREE and original page. You can find scholarships and grants here by filling out your information.
4. (mine) The Nontraditional Student Scholarship pages one and two. These and other sites are listed here.
5. The CollegeNet Mach 25 site. This is another great database.
6. FastAid Free Scholarship Search. Another good site.
7. The Fresch Info. site. This site has articles, links, and advice.
8. Links at the Scholarship Page. You will have to check these links out. Some are credit card sites or only for online students.
9. The Know How to Go website - check here with questions, links to other state sites, and learn how to go to college.
10. College-Scholarships.com - this site has many pages for different careers and state scholarships. The entry page here also has MANY more sites with scholarship links too.

The IDEX Fellowship Program in India - a great opportunity.

A new opportunity in India for recent graduates!

And also a terrific opportunity, the Fellowship Program for IDEX in India helps people who want to learn more about helping the poor with development of programs in social enterprise. This opportunity is via Tina. I found out about this on Facebook.

Recent cohorts include people from these U.S. colleges: Beloit, Wesleyan, Dartmouth, the University of Georgia, and lots more. Other fellows come from all over.

New group of Rhodes Scholars includes Ronan Farrow

The Rhodes Scholarships reward some of the best scholars in the world.

Cecil Rhodes in Capetown.

There are a group of 32 finalists this year for the Rhodes Scholarship. These winners will be able to study for 2-3 years at Oxford University in England. Wow. The most famous person who won was Ronan Farrow, Mia Farrow and Woody Allen's son.

I can't think of an serious student who would not want this scholarship. It opens up so many doors for each winner. Congratulations to all the new winners!

Cecil Rhodes wrote out some qualifications that winners of this scholarship should have. Here is the quote, from the historical biography page at the age-of-the-sage website listed below.

<The winner of the Rhodes scholarship should have: >

"'literary and scholastic attainments; his fondness of, and success in, manly outdoor sports; his qualities of manhood, truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for the protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship, and his exhibition during his school days of moral force of character and of instincts to lead and take an interest in his schoolmates'."

Do you think you would qualify for this scholarship? By all means, apply for next year's Rhodes Scholarships.

Beautiful Music Scholarships for musical people...

Do you love music? Are you African-American or Latino? Here on the ASCAP page, there are scholarships for all ages and ethnicities. Most of the scholarships on this page are for younger students, but a few are also available for older students.

Two of these are: (from the site)

"THE ASCAP FOUNDATION IRVING BURGIE SCHOLARSHIP
The ASCAP Foundation Irving Burgie Scholarship was established to support an aspiring African-American songwriter from New York City. This annual scholarship is awarded alternately between the Berklee College of Music and the University of Southern California. Winning a scholarship - try for a LARGE one!

Question: if you are going to search for a scholarship, why not try for a big one?

Here are a few articles and pages about winning a LARGE scholarship.

#1: (From Scholarships.com) - Largest Dollar Amount Scholarships - this page has three scholarships listed, one for $10,000, which is for a Create a Greeting Card Scholarship.

#2: One large scholarship is for Interior Design Students - learn how Angela Lauer won this $30,000 scholarship. This article is at the University of Texas at Austin's site.

#3. The Ruth Lilly Poetry Scholarship has been split into more than one scholarship. You can apply through Poetry Magazine. Find out more here at the Poetry Foundation site: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/foundation/prizes_fellowship.

#4. The Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships page at the FinAid site lists some big scholarships like Apple Scholars ($2,000), the Buick Achievers Scholarship (25,000), the Collegiate Inventors Competition (25,000 Grand Prize), Davidson Fellows ($50,000), and more. Things to do in-between your scholarship applications

I have to admit. I have good intentions, but still have not used this blog to fill out my OWN scholarships and blogs and register on all the sites I need to register on.

I did plan it that way, and as a helpful addition to information for nontraditional students, but I'm you know how things can morph sometimes.

So... I am doing things in-between applications. Here are just a few you might like too.

#1. Organize your house. I like the FlyLady site for this. http://www.flylady.net/

#2. Write a novel in the month of November. Just go to the NaNoWriMo site to sign up. http://www.nanowrimo.org/

#3. Start a blog about your educational grant and scholarship search. Then send me the link. I'll be happy to link to it. I use Blogger, but Wordpress is good too, among others.

You can have some fun and discover new websites and blogs on Twitter. Just go to the Twitter website, http://www.twitter.com and put "scholarships in the search box.

Or go further and put your state name or country in the search box also, using "scholarships and state" and see what pops up.

The FAFSA: when should you apply for next year?

You can check for your state's FAFSA Deadlines at this page:
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines.htm

This is the official page to check. I looked up Kentucky's deadlines today. It listed these deadlines for the 2011-2012 school year: The Federal deadline is June 30, 2012. Corrections must be made by September 15, 2012.

College Deadline
Each college may have a different deadline. Check with the college(s) you are interested in attending. You may also want to ask your college about their definition of an application deadline - whether it is the date they receive your FAFSA, or the date your FAFSA is processed."

So, if you are wanting to attend next year, and plan ahead, I'm pretty sure the due dates will be similar. AND the budget crisis being what it is, I would apply right on January 1st of next year. That is the first day to apply. As the FinAid site explains,

"FAFSA Deadlines

Financial aid applications, such as the FAFSA, should be submitted as soon as possible after January 1, but no sooner. You cannot submit the form before January 1, because the need analysis process uses your financial information from the prior tax year when calculating eligibility for the upcoming award year"

They have live help here every day but Sunday. They also have an email address at this site.

Here is something new at the site. It's called the FAFSA4caster. You can see what your estimated loan amounts may be and what you qualify for ahead of time.

The College of Southern Maryland Scholarship Finder Page (use Microsoft Internet Explorer)

Fastweb's college matcher page (to go on all the State pages later on)

The Scholarships Canada site

The Online Internet Database (OEDb) Graduate School Scholarships page

The Columbia College, Missouri, Scholarship Finder page.

Cynthia Good's College and Career Planning Page - worth a look

A college links page with possibilities.

At least one link listed here on the college-scholarships.com site is one I have never seen even one time before. It is called the Cynthia Good's College and Career Planning Site.

This site has moved since it was first found here, but I found its new location. Here it is:

This page has a multitude of helpful sites listed PLUS a big Financial Aid section that includes scholarships.

Among the other pages listed are these sites you may not have been to yet:

Campus Tours - tour many campuses online for free
GoCollege - lots of free information is here, including a short section on college survival.
Talbot's Student Guide - This lists many schools and has an easy-to-use map to zero in on what state you might be interested in. I do notice that the laptop contest puts you on a mailing list and asks for your year of graduation, so if you don't want that, don't enter.

Seven redone NT State Pages with Scholarships added

I have been redoing my Nontraditional Student State Pages one at a time at the Betsyanne Nontraditional Student website.

I am adding scholarship links to them, too. I think this goes well with each State page because in order to go back to school as a nontraditional student (or any age student), people sometimes need to find funds and don't want to put everything on a loan.

Here are the latest redone pages that include scholarship links.

I hope to have every state and its scholarships done by next year - or maybe this one!
