2019 Cricket World Cup, Hosted by England and Wales, 12th Cricket World Cup competition

Without hesitation, the highlight of this global event so far has been the performance and spirit of the champion minnows, those fighting for their lives, for their existence in future World Cups.

All this talk about ten teams for future World Cups is absolute bonkers. If we all, just for a minute, stopped and thought about what the cricket world really needs we would soon realise that by cutting back we are only going to further feather the bulging nest of the Big Three.

We must think bigger instead of smaller. We must plan a competition that truly expands the game, and keeps it prominent in people's minds for long periods. We must design a World Cup that takes cricket to a new level of exposure and support.

This is the time to use the rising confidence of the underdogs and force them into the spotlight for good. With T20 becoming the ideal format for domestic cricket globally, this is the age where the game can truly expand. After the Big Three takeover, we now are witnessing the balancing act of the cricketing gods.

My vision is to take the top 18 teams in the world and throw them into the biggest melting pot of all time - a proper world event every four years.

The fans will be able to appreciate the game in its entirety, as they can far more readily commit to a six-hour game than to an eight-hour one
Firstly, a pre-Cup tournament (as is already staged to confirm the participating teams for the main event), consisting of nations like Papua New Guinea, USA, Canada, Namibia, Bermuda, Nepal etc, with the top two advancing to a World Series League, after a series of round-robin league matches against each other.

Any number of nations can be used to co-host the main event, the World Series League, over a ten-week period. For 2019, it would be Great Britain, the Netherlands and other European Associates sharing the hosting rights.

Eighteen teams split into a World Series League; two separate conferences of nine teams based on alternate ranking, all playing each other (eight matches each) for a total of 72 matches over the first 36 days in League play. Two games to be played every day, with a maximum of four-day breaks for each team. Small stadiums/grounds in smaller cities/towns to be utilised, bigger stadiums for when high-ranking teams are competing against each other.

Example with rankings as of today:

Conference One: Australia (1), South Africa (3), New Zealand (5), Pakistan (7), Bangladesh (9), Ireland (11), UAE (13), Netherlands (15) plus one of the qualifiers from among the Associates.

Conference Two: India (2), Sri Lanka (4), England (6), West Indies (8), Zimbabwe (10), Afghanistan (12), Scotland (14), Kenya (16), plus one of the qualifiers from among the Associates.
After a short break, the World Cup finals section is played in England with the top eight carrying their points over and then each playing the four teams from the other conference, over the next two weeks, to decide the four semi-finalists.

One v four, two v three, will then play a best-of-three semi-finals over eight days (potentially six televised games). Followed by the World Cup Grand Final, a best of three, played over eight days on three main grounds, the second match being at Lord's.

Overall, it's a proper competition that lasts ten glorious weeks, enabling constant worldwide coverage, global expansion and a true format to find the world champion team.

To accommodate the fans better, the format must be 40-overs per team, 160 minutes to complete an innings. Thirty-minute interval. Games start at 1pm, or 4pm for day-night fixtures. One ball used. Two bowlers allowed to bowl up to ten overs each maximum. Field restrictions allow two outside the ring in the first ten overs, and five outside for the remainder of the innings.

The 40-over format is the same as the old 50 overs. Instead of scores climbing into the high 300s, the targets will go back to around 250-275, thus falling into line again with all the records and statistics created in the past. By changing the rules to improve the batting entertainment, the overall storytelling of the one-day game has been lost; the game has become too different, too much about batting dominance.

Overall, the fans will be able to appreciate the game in its entirety, as they can far more readily commit to a six-hour game than an eight-hour one. They can see a game that is simple to follow, is balanced for bat and ball, and provides a true contest, with closer matches encouraged.

Mostly the event will grow the game, allowing the lesser lights more exposure while ensuring a champion is found with no chance of luck playing too great a part. The 2019 World Cup winner will indeed have deserved the crown, more than any other World Cup winner in sport.

ICC suspends Saeed Ajmal for illegal bowling action

DUBAI: International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Pakistani spinner Saeed Ajmal for his ‘illegal’ bowling action, SAMAA reported Tuesday.

“The International Cricket Council today confirmed that an independent analysis has found the bowling action of Pakistan’s off-spinner Saeed Ajmal to be illegal and, as such, the player has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect,” ICC said in a statement.

It said “the analysis revealed that all his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.”

Saeed, who was reported after the first Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle last month, can apply a re-assessment after he has modified his bowling action, ICC said.

The analysis was performed on 25 August by the ICC’s accredited team of Human Movement Specialists using the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane.

Suspension of the top ranked ODI bowler in the world comes as a setback for Pakistani cricket at times when the Green Shirts are struggling to overcome their batting and bowling flaws.

A record that stood for nearly 18 years was finally broken on New Year's day in 2014. Corey Anderson bludgeoned the West Indies bowlers to score the fastest ODI century, off just 36 balls, eclipsing the record of 37 balls set by a 16-year-old Shahid Afridi in 1996. Anderson finished unbeaten on 131 and such was his savagery that he even managed to overshadow Jesse Ryder, who to helped himself to a century. The pair powered New Zealand to a scarcely believable 283 in just 21 overs. This, after there were fears of yet another washout.

Irrespective of the format, this was the fastest ever international century. While it's true that the grounds in New Zealand are not the biggest, many, if not all of Anderson's hits would have cleared the rope at any venue across the world. He blasted 14 sixes, two behind Rohit Sharma's world record of 16 and New Zealand's sixes tally stood at 22, another world record. India hit 19 sixes in the same match in which Rohit smashed 209 against Australia, but that was off 50 overs. New Zealand managed all those in just 21. West Indies' bowling figures told another story, for it's rare that the least expensive economy rate was 11, by Nikita Miller.

Toss West Indies chose to bowl v New Zealand
Rain kept everyone waiting but the weather had improved significantly to allow for a toss, nearly five hours after the scheduled start. Dwayne Bravo won the toss and decided to bowl in a match reduced to 21 overs, giving the spectators, who showed up on New Year's day and waited patiently despite the cold weather, some cricket to cheer for.

West Indies lost Darren Sammy, who injured his hamstring in the morning while running on the outfield with his team-mates. With Darren Bravo back home and Sammy injured, West Indies were forced to make a couple of changes. The wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton got his first game on tour, while the left-arm spinner Nikita Miller replaced Sammy.

New Zealand left out Kane Williamson and brought in the fast bowler Adam Milne, who's playing his first one-dayer at home.

Graham Onions and Monty Panesar took three wickets each to propel England XI to their second win in as many practice games, and give the selectors a reminder of the decisions they face ahead of the first Test against Pakistan on Tuesday.

In the absence of Tim Bresnan, a bowling spot is up for grabs in the England Test side. Onions and Panesar both pressed their case for inclusion as they helped bowl the Pakistan Cricket Board XI out for 150, and set up a 100-run win on the third day.

Panesar finished with 8 for 103 in the match to press his case to be included as a second spinner for the first Test. Onions also showed he was ready for a return to Test cricket, taking 3 for 38 in the second innings. His two wickets help reduce the PCB XI to 16 for 3 in pursuit of 251 after England declared their second-innings five minutes before lunch.

Onions had Afaq Raheem cutting onto his stumps for 7 before Mohammad Ayub was trapped in front for a third-ball duck. Chris Tremlett is the favourite to replace Bresnan for the first Test and he also struck with the new ball by having Nasir Jamshed caught behind, playing away from his body.

Usman Salahuddin and Fawad Alam added 71 for the fourth wicket before Panesar added to his first-innings five-for by finding the edge of Salahuddin's bat, Graeme Swann taking the catch at slip.

Swann got among the wickets by trapping Haris Sohail leg before, despite a hint of bat before pad, and there was also a wicket for Kevin Pietersen's occasional offspin as Alam holed out to midwicket for 51 for 93 balls.

But it was Panesar again that stole the show as he lured Raza Hasan past a turning ball, before completing the win when Mohammad Talha offered no stroke and was out lbw for three.

England will be encouraged by Panesar's form and they will also have been pleased to see Jonathan Trott make runs in England's second innings. Trott was promoted to open the batting and struck 12 fours making 93, and shared an opening stand of 130 with Andrew Strauss.

Strauss also went past 50 before falling leg before to Yasir Shah, who took all three wickets in the innings and gave England a reminder of their fallibility against spin. He finished with 8 for 95 in the match.

Cricket to return to Pakistan in April 2012

Bangldesh Cricket Board Chairman Mustafa Kamal declared today that he expects the Bangladesh team to tour Pakistan in April 2012. There will be a board meeting next Saturday to see if other board members agree.

After a successful meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, Zaka Ashraf, Kamal added that if the board agrees, Bangladesh will send a security team in January before finalising the series which is pencilled in for April.

If all goes to plan, this will be the first International games to be played in Pakistan since the 2009 Lahore attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus.
