The Google Chromebook – great for productivity, but is it worth it? User review

Google has announced their new Chromium OS quite a while ago, along with the netbooks that run it, called Chromebooks, but we haven’t heard much about them ever since. That’s because they’ve been working hard to improve the new cloud apps system, and it seems that their new product is finally ready for use (then again, Google is known for releasing their products for the general public in alpha or beta states).

Just recently, they also announced the new Chromebooks (yes, that’s how they’re called, instead of netbooks), which have already started shipping, and a lot of people are voicing their opinions about them: some love them, most don’t see the point of owning one.

There are actually 2 Chromebooks available: a 12.1 inch model from Samsung and a slightly smaller 11.6 inch one from Acer, with pretty much the same specs and a slightly different design (the Samsung is rounder and looks more stylish than the Acer, but that’s just my opinion). Both of them have a dual core Atom processor from Intel, HD webcam, built in Wifi N and an optional 3G modem, an SD card slot, 2 USB ports and a video output port (mini-VGA for the Samsung and HDMI for the Acer).

But the machine hardware is not really important here, because as long as you’re connected to Google’s cloud (i.e. the Internet), you have pretty much unlimited processing power at your fingertips – or so the theory goes. There is no storage space to speak of on the Chromebooks, as you store everything online using Google’s own apps: Picasa for pictures, Docs for documents, Gmail for your mail, and so on.

A lot of people wonder why would they need a device that costs as much as a good netbook, has no storage space and is basically a paperweight if you’re not connected to Google, but if you think about it, when was the last time you didn’t have Internet access? Well, Google asked the same thing, and they came to the conclusion that many people in the enterprise and education sectors would greatly benefit from a laptop that needs no IT maintenance (there’s nothing to break, and Google takes care of everything OS-related), is cheap at $20-30 per month per device, has little distractions for the user (so they can focus on work), and can be left anywhere or stolen without risk of losing or leaking important information (if you don’t login to Google, there’s nothing to access).

Those are pretty important points that may make the Chromebook competitive, but only if people accept that Google controls all their data first (which many won’t, for good reasons).

The Chromebook is great for normal users as well, especially for a quick Internet access device – for example, you can turn it on in less than 10 seconds and search for information on that actor in the movie you’re watching, share photos or live stream from a party, buy something on eBay or Amazon, watch movies on Netflix and listen to music on Last.fm or using Google Music, edit photos using Pixlr or other services (yes, it’s possible and it actually works great!) and more – there certainly is enough to do without the need of an energy hungry hard drive and processor – and if you have a good Internet connection, everything is very fast and snappy.

Both the Samsung and Acer manufactured Chromebooks are very light and slim, but they sure could use a reduction in price – since they don’t have a hard drive or even a lot of memory, why do they still cost the same as a pretty powerful netbook? That’s actually the only issue – otherwise, if you are always using a Web browser and various Web apps (especially Google’s) in your day to day work or life, then you can certainly benefit from having a Chromebook – at the very least, you won’t have any headaches with system updates and crashes!

Archos 80 G9 – more space and power than you’ll ever need in a compact tablet – user review

Archos was one of the first companies to start producing Android tablets, even before the iPad made the market so huge. Back then, they focused more on multimedia features, marketing the tablets as portable media players – and interestingly enough, that was a time when Android had pretty much no support for multimedia, so Archos had to create their own codecs and drivers for video and audio playback.

Nowadays, Archos is still on the tablets market, but strangely, they’re nowhere near as big as they seemingly should – they have more experience than other companies, yet their marketing efforts are pretty much nil compared to Samsung, HTC and other companies that are now most popular for their Android slates.

One of the latest Archos tablets is set to change that, however: meet the Archos 80 G9, a compact slate that has more processing power and storage space than you’ll ever need on a tablet, but which could prove very useful on a portable multimedia device.

The Archos 80 G9 is more niche-oriented: while other tablets are general purpose mobile computers, Archos is targeting the market they know best –portable multimedia players. But in this case, the player part is only the beginning, as the Android powered Archos 80 G9 has enough power to run any kind of tasks.

On the outside, the new tablet doesn’t look very impressive – it’s got a standard slate form factor, with no unique features except two prolonged screen borders that make it easy to hold with one or two hands (the other two borders are thinner), which has almost become an Archos trademark over time.

There are no buttons on the front, nor does the Android Honeycomb OS need any.
The display on the Archos 80 G9 is 8 inches across (in fact, its name stands for just that – 8.0 inches) and has a resolution of 1024×768 in 4:3 format – the same as on both iPads, while being slightly smaller and easier to hold.

The performance is provided by a dual core Texas Instruments OMAP 4 platform running at a whopping 1.5 GHz, making it the fastest tablet in the world – TI’s new OMAP 4 is not only very energy-efficient, consuming less than the new dual core Snapdragon, but it’s also known to be faster than similarly clocked chips from Qualcomm and Samsung, and here it’s running at 1.5 GHz! Obviously, this monster is paired with 1 GB of RAM, which is the minimum necessary to get its full potential.

Aside from Wifi N, Bluetooth, GPS, gyroscope and other standard features, the Archos 80 G9 has a HDMI out port with support for 1080p output (which the fast tablet can easily provide) and a full sized USB port for any peripherals you may want to connect. It’s mainly intended for Archos’ own 3G data stick, but you can connect anything that works on Linux with generic drivers – external hard drives, keyboards, mice, flash drives and other peripherals (even some printers!).

One of the other defining features of the new G9 is the amount of storage space – this thing has 250 full GB! It achieves that by using Seagate’s single-platter ultra slim 7mm mechanical drive instead of the usual Flash memory. This gives you plenty of space for any movies, images, music, documents and other files (you can also upgrade it to 320 GB in the future, though you’ll have to take the whole device apart), and also provides extreme reading/writing speeds for a tablet – this drive should be at least 2-3 times faster than any onboard Flash storage!

For those who want more battery life (obviously, the drive takes its toll – it should reduce the total battery life by 20-30 minutes) or don’t like the idea of a mechanical hard drive spinning inside (though its super quiet and can last through any rough handling) can get the basic model that has 16 GB of Flash storage and will cost about $100 less.

The Archos 80 G9 will be available this September, and will cost anywhere between $250 and $400 – I’m betting on the former, as this tablet has a bigger brother that will take the more expensive price. If you’ve been waiting for the best tablet for entertainment and work on the go, this could be it!

Sony NEX-5 – the world’s smallest interchangeable lens camera – review

Panasonic and Olympus’ mirror less Micro Four Thirds standard has been mostly supported by these two companies alone up until now, and they have certainly proved that there are advantages to using it over the older Four Thirds standard, which is pretty much ubiquitous in professional digital SLR cameras.

One of the latest applications where Micro Four Thirds has proved useful is in super small professional cameras, both for photography and video shooting.

Olympus and Panasonic have both introduced their own models, the E-P1 and GF1, both of which were pretty successful and have spanned a series of cameras, with the newer models being comparable with low and mid end DSLRs. These cameras are excellent for novice photographers who want to have access to all the features a DSLR offers while still having an easy experience in the beginning, but they’ll also work for seasoned professionals who want a good day to day camera to replace a point-and-shoot (which the new MFT super-compacts sure can accomplish).

To facilitate the extremely small design, Sony has had to make a few sacrifices, with the most important one being the battery life and lack of a flash on the camera. The rechargeable battery can be used for about 300 shots (less with the add-on flash) and 1 hour of HD video shooting, which is on the low side.

The good news here is that it’s replaceable, so you can keep a couple of these with you and optionally a charger nearby. The lack of flash isn’t that bad, thanks to the new E mount, which replaces the usual hot shoe.

Meanwhile, Sony has also noticed the format and its success, and has announced their own cameras for the line, the NEX-5 and NEX-3, which were released a while ago and are a great competitor to Olympus and Panasonic’s established models. The cameras are pretty much identical, with the only major differences being the support for 1080i video recording, an infrared remote sensor and a smaller magnesium housing, all of which are present on the NEX-5 and absent from the NEX-3, which makes the former a more interesting choice.

The camera comes with a flash in the package, which attaches itself to the E mount and works even better than a normal small flash. You also have the option to add a full hot shoe instead that can be used with any accessories, or an EVF if you prefer it over the standard display. You have to remember that you can’t have any accessories attached when using the flashgun, which could create a few problems for some photographers. Thanks to the various adapters, you can attach pretty much any lens or accessory made for any cameras, which makes the NEX-5 a very versatile small camera.

The number of buttons to control the camera is pretty limited, making it an excellent choice for beginners – although all the detailed settings are available for configuration using the beautiful 3 inch display, which features an adjustable angle (up to 80 degrees up and 45 degrees down, giving you a much wider choice when taking photos) and 920,000 pixels with XtraFine TruBlack technology for excellent colors, brightness and contrast.

The sensor on the camera is a 14.2 megapixels unit that can shoot 14 megapixels photos in 3:2 format or 12 effective megapixels in 16:9 widescreen format. You can also film 1920×1080 (60 FPS interlaced) Full HD videos using Panasonic’s AVCHD compression or 1440x1080p at 30 frames using the MP4 format. Of course, there’s also the choice of 720p or VGA video, all at the same 30 frames per second.

All in all, Sony’s NEX-5 ultra-compact Micro Four Thirds camera is certainly impressive, although at the $650 starting price, it is definitely very expensive – you can add $100 more and get a great DSLR with flash and an additional lens! Sony has always been known for expensive products, though, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise. The NEX-5 may be worth it for those who want a small all-in-one camera that can be used as a point and shoot, for filming high quality videos and doing (semi-)professional photo shoots – it can easily do all of that.

Nokia N9 – proving that MeeGo and Nokia have a chance – user review

People’s trust in Nokia has been fading away quite fast in the past couple of years, all because their management just can’t seem to decide the direction they should take with their smartphones and operating systems.

First they decided to continue using Symbian S60, which even at the newest version 5 was still archaic compared to the iOS and even Windows Mobile 6.5, with the phones not even supporting capacitive touch screens. Then they decided to abandon it and focus on the new Linux based Maemo that, despite the innovative design and promising future, was only released on two devices – a tablet and a smartphone, which got minimal attention from the market.

Naturally, Nokia abandoned that OS as well, without giving it a chance, and started focusing on the new Symbian S^3, which is now running on less than 5 smartphones and is also, you guessed it, abandoned, in favor of Microsoft’s also new Windows 7 Phone. Can you see a trend here?

And now, Nokia has finally released a high-end smartphone running their latest experimental Linux-based OS, MeeGo – the N9, which is a simply amazing device and really demonstrates that it’s possible for Nokia and MeeGo to gain back the lost trust – of course, unless it’s also abandoned. But Nokia seems to have set its mind that MeeGo will run on high end and experimental/innovative handsets, while Windows 7 Phone will be their “day to day” OS for the rest of the fleet.

The Nokia N9 looks pretty unique on the outside, and I don’t mean the pencil-like colors (I actually like the black version more). The body is made out of one piece of polycarbonate plastic, which makes it very sturdy (just as good as any metal housing, plus it doesn’t bend) and also allows for a much better signal reception, both for cellular and Wifi connections. The whole phone is smooth and the glass covering the display is just a bit curved for a better touch experience.

The screen itself is a beautiful 3.9 inch AMOLED unit with Clear Black technology to make black levels really deep (and combine excellently with the rest of the body, that’s why I like the black model) and a resolution of 854×480, which is the same as on the Motorola Droid and Droid 2, plenty enough for any kind of tasks, especially at this size.

Hardware wise, you might think that the N9 is pretty average – on the low end, even, but you’ll be wrong. Yes, the processor is a relatively old and slow TI OMAP 3 running at 1 GHz, but in this case it’s paired with a full 1 GB of RAM (Nokia’s always been stingy with the RAM, but not in this case) and a PowerVR SGX530 graphics adapter, which is pretty damn fast even by modern standards. Add to that the ability of Nokia’s engineers to make the most out of old hardware with well written and clever software, and you get a very fast phone that has no lags and feels just as fast as any dual core Android phone out there (or the iPhone 4, for that matter).

The Nokia N9 has a 8 megapixels camera on the back with the traditional Carl Zeiss optics, which can take beautiful shots and film 720p videos at 30 FPS, making this phone a perfect replacement for your point-and-shoot. There’s also a front facing camera for video calls. Other technical specs are also worthy of attention: besides the usual Wifi N, Bluetooth, GPS, gyroscope and HSPA+ support, the phone has a HDMI out port and an NFC transceiver, which Nokia puts to good use with the automatic Bluetooth pairing feature (you just swipe the phone over another NFC enabled device like external speakers and they pair with the phone automatically – watch the demo, it’s pretty good).

The Nokia N9 should be available sometime this year – no further information is available, but I really hope it comes out as soon as possible – this phone looks awesome!

Archos 101 G9 Android tablet – the new champion in performance and storage space – user review

You may already be familiar with the Archos brand if you ever purchased or at least were interested in portable media players – their PMP’s are some of the best in the world, having been around for almost a decade. Archos was actually one of the first companies to start producing Android tablets even before the iPad came to be, although they were focused on playing movies, music and slide showing images (besides there was no Android apps market, either!).

And just a few days ago, Archos has re-entered, you could say, the Android tablets market with a pair of G9 pads, which are also focused on multimedia, but this time, can do so much more than that, thanks to the powerful internal hardware and a mature Android OS. The Archos 80 G9 is a compact tablet that has the performance necessary to do your work anywhere you want, but for entertainment and multimedia, the other model, 101 G9 look far more interesting.

The exterior of the 101 G9 may look unassuming, but this is one of those cases where everything’s not what it seems at a first glance. The 101 G9 has a typical Archos design, with two of the borders being bigger than the other to help the user hold the device better with one or two hands. There are no Android navigation buttons, as Honeycomb 3.1 (which this tablet runs) does not need them. There are two cameras – one on the front for video calls and a bigger one on the back for photos and videos, and that’s about it.

The screen on the 101 G9 is a big and beautiful 10.1 inch unit (it’s in the name, 101=10.1!), with a resolution of 1280×800 that should be enough for any tasks, including watching HD movies. The viewing angles are pretty decent for an LCD display, although it’s certainly no AMOLED or IPS like on the Samsung Galaxy Tab or T-Mobile G-Slate.

The internal hardware is what’s amazing, though: in order to be able to play 1080p Full HD videos in any format without lags, Archos had to use a very powerful chipset, and of course, they went with the best: the 101 G9 is powered by a TI OMAP 4 dual core platform, running at 1.5 GHz (that’s for each processor core!). This makes it the fastest official tablet in the world at the moment, although there will probably be more of them by the time it’s actually released. Texas Instruments stealthy OMAP 4 not only outperforms the 3rd generation Snapdragon and the Tegra 2 at the same frequency, but also consumes less power, being more effective energy-wise.

Obviously, this wouldn’t be much of a portable media player if you could only store 3-4 HD movies (and nothing else!) on it, that’s why Archos also outfitted it with 250 GB of storage space by using Seagate’s Momentus Thin mechanical hard drive, which is only 7 mm in height! Not only is that enough space for a dozen of movies and thousands of photos and music, but it also works faster than any NAND Flash storage space on other tablets (it should achieve at least 2-3 times higher read/write speeds).

If you worry about a spinning hard drive being easily damaged, you should stop: the Momentus Thin can withstand more shock when operational than the 10.1 inch display on the tablet, so you’ll know that the drive may be damaged when you see a crack on the screen . However, Archos also offers a basic model with Flash storage as well, for about $100 less.

The 101 G9 also has all the other tech features you’d expect on a great tablet, including Wifi N, Bluetooth, DLNA, HDMI output, and a full sized USB port for connecting external peripherals (like an external hard drive, keyboard, or a 3G data stick for on the go Web access).

Thanks to all of these features, I think the 101 G9 will also be a great purchase for those who want to be able to work on the go and keep all their data always with them, especially when the price will be about $400 – that’s cheaper than the lower-specced iPad 2!

The Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet – finally, a tablet that business professionals can trust – user review

The ThinkPad line of laptops is well known to serious users, thanks to their proven reliability, power and stability under any operating conditions. Any big business and professionals that don’t have time to mess around and just want a laptop that works and lasts a lifetime will choose a ThinkPad. This is IBM’s legacy, but the new owners, Lenovo, are doing a pretty good job at maintaining it.

With the recent release of the new ThinkPad laptop models, Lenovo also leaked (whether intentionally or not doesn’t really matter) the specs of a new Android tablet, dubbed the ThinkPad Tablet, filled to the brink with features and oriented at business and power users.

There aren’t any real pictures or even mockups of the exterior of the new tablet, though being a ThinkPad, I’d expect it to be rather ugly, but practical. If its anything like the W5XX line of laptops, it should have a soft plastic finish that would make it great to hold in your hands.

The technical specs are really good, though: the ThinkPad Tablet is supposed to have a 10.1 IPS LCD inches capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. The performance will be provided by NVidia’s Tegra 2 platform, which means that this tablet will be fast enough for anything from editing your documents, viewing Flash videos right in the browser and watching 1080p video clips without any lags.

There will also be up to 64 GB of integrated storage space (though I’d prefer Archos G9 solution over this – more space and better performance – great for power users), two cameras (which is normal for a tablet, but weird for a ThinkPad), a full sized USB port and HDMI output, an SD card reader (not micro SD!) and a big batter that is supposed to last up to 8 hours of continuous use. Of course, there’ll be your usual Wifi, Bluetooth, various sensors and optional 3G modem for those who work on the move.

Moreover, there will be an option for a Wacom digitizer with full pen support for those who need it and a special keyboard dock, kind of like the Asus Transformer or the popular iPad keyboard cases that you can find from quite a few companies online.

Obviously, a business tablet should come with the appropriate software and security features, and the ThinkPad tablet will not fail to deliver: it will come with a lot of apps for professional and corporate tasks and will have full device encryption, anti-theft and remote wipe options and strong IT integration.

These are still just preliminary specs leaked from a Lenovo confidential file, but they certainly look promising and exactly what you would expect from a powerful business device. The pricing will start at $499, in line with the iPad and a great price for those who want a reliable and functional tablet for all their needs.

Nexus Prime – the next flagship Android smartphone

Google’s Nexus phones are among the most popular among Android developers, thanks to there being no locks on the boot loader or other limitations imposed by the manufacturer on the NAND memory. This gives programmers and developers the ability to experiment with the software however they see fit – install custom apps, kernels, ROMs, even different operating systems.
The first Nexus (Nexus One) is a pure Android developer’s smartphone – it looks pretty normal compared to the other phones on the market, it has your standard 1 GHz Snapdragon with 512 MB of RAM and a fully unlocked software part. The second Nexus (Nexus S) seems more refined – it not only has a powerful 1 GHz Hummingbird processor from Samsung, but it also looks very sleek, with its curved display glass and slim design.
And now, rumors are abound about the next Nexus, dubbed the Nexus Prime, and knowing Google, I have little doubt that would really be the actual name – it sounds pretty cool, like Optimus Prime, and everyone will love it. And as a device named after the Autobot leader, it will be the most powerful Nexus to date and most likely, the most powerful Android smartphone when it comes out.
According to rumors, the Nexus Prime will have a dual core processor running at 1.2 or even 1.5 GHz (either a Texas Instruments OMAP 4 series or Qualcomm’s 3rd generation Snapdragon), which is to be expected of any new high end smartphone. It will also have a big 4+ inches screen with a 720p resolution (branded as Super AMOLED HD) – if that’s true, it will most definitely look very impressive and could easily rival the Galaxy S2’s Super AMOLED+ display, which is the best on the market right now. Obviously, the Prime will have at least 1 GB of fast DDR2 RAM and 4G LTE support – no way a flagship phone could do away without them.
The operating system will most probably be the upcoming Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which doesn’t even have an official version number yet, though a lot of people think it will be 4.0, instead of anything in the 3.x range, thanks to the variety of features it will add, including the universal smartphone/tablet user interface and APIs everyone was expecting even with Honeycomb. There will also be no external Android navigation buttons, touch or otherwise – the new OS can work perfectly fine without them.
There isn’t a lot of other information about the smartphone, but it’ll most definitely be the next flagship Android phone for the high end market and developers, and I really want to see it released as soon as possible.

Motorola Droid 3 – packs a punch and coming soon – review

The Motorola Droid still remains the most well sold Android smartphone to date – it came at a very advantageous time, just when Android was gaining popularity at exponential rates, offering powerful hardware features never before seen on an Android phone, and it practically saved Motorola’s mobile division from selling out to another company because of the increasing debt and decreasing sales.

The successor to this great smartphone brought a few innovations, but it was nothing special – it didn’t sell nearly as well and because of the locked boot loader, it wasn’t even popular with the modding and developers communities. Lucky for Motorola, they also stumbled upon another lucrative market with the big screen Droid X, which also became a best seller and its unique design has a lot of fans and is still unmatched by pretty much any other phone (the Droid X2 thankfully continues the tradition).

And now it seems that it’s time for us to see the next phone in the QWERTY0-enabled Droid line – a few leaks have shown up online detailing the specs and listing the accessories for the upcoming Droid 3 from Motorola.

To start with, the new Droid 3 looks more like a perfected Droid than the Droid 2, and the designers got it right – the asymmetrical design of the first slider was more attractive than the second variant, giving it a more industrial and unique feel, while also making it easier to hold when opening. The Droid 3 has rounder corners, but that’s about the only change we can spot from the leaked photos and videos. The keyboard, however, has the same design as the one on the Droid 2, with an added 5th row for a numpads, which a lot of people will definitely love – a wise choice, indeed.

A new qHD screen and dual core power

The screen has also been upgraded to a 4 inch unit with qHD resolution – it’s probably the same screen we’ve seen on the Atrix, which is fantastic news. Motorola also chose the most efficient and high performance platform for the Droid 3 – the new OMAP 4 dual core series from Texas Instruments, which is able to outperform the third generation Snapdragon at the same speeds both in general apps and games, while consuming less power. According to rumors, the Droid 3 only has 512 MB of RAM – I really hope that’s not the case, although the Optimus 2X, Droid Bionic and other smartphones have clearly shown that it’s easily possible to get the best performance out of the processor with just this amount (thanks to Android’s multitasking capabilities).

Other specs include a 1500 mAh battery, which should last through a day (but barely) and the usual HDMI out port, separate in this case, like on the Atrix, which is a better setup in my opinion, because you can have the USB and HDMI ports occupied at the same time without another expensive adapter. An interesting detail is that the Droid 3 will lack supposedly 4G LTE (it will be coming to Verizon in the US, obviously), but I wouldn’t worry about it since those “4G” speeds are not much faster than 3G at the moment.

To sum it up, Motorola took the best from the first two phones in the ergonomics and design department and added more powerful internal hardware – creating yet another perfect Android phone, which I’m sure will be a best seller, especially when there are so few worthy competitors with a QWERTY keyboard. Unfortunately, not much else is known and all of the information is still unconfirmed, but we can be pretty sure that the upcoming phone will not disappoint.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Neo Preview

It’s taken a while to emerge, but the Sony Ericsson Neo is finally with us. Shipments of this Xperia-branded device were delayed by the recent natural disaster in Japan, but now that it’s here we’re pleased to report that it’s been worth the wait. We’re giving you a little taster of what this likable mid-range device is capable of, and we’ll be following it up with the usual exhaustive FoneArena review in the not-too-distant future.

Looking at the Xperia Neo for the first time calls to mind one of its recently-launched brothers, the PlayStation-certified . Front the front, the two phones look very much alike, with only the missing ‘search’ button and enlarged front-facing camera standing out as key differences. The Neo shares the Play’s metal-effect plastic sides, too – although around the back, it’s a different story.

The Neo boasts a cool gradient effect on its battery cover, and the unit we looked at featured a black and metallic blue combination. We wouldn’t begin to suggest that it will be to everyone’s tastes, but it certainly tickled our fancy.

The Neo’s 3.7-inch screen may not be as big as the ones seen on the Play and Arc, but the Bravia Mobile tech Sony Ericsson has used grants impressive image quality. When placed alongside its sibling the Xperia Play – which is saddled with quite a dull screen – the difference is striking.
Which is just as well, because the photos and video captured by the Neo’s 8-need a good display to do them justice. The Exmor-R CMOS back-lit sensor is nothing short of breathtaking, and snaps astonishingly detailed photos. Even at this preview stage, we’re quite happy to say that it’s one of the best mobile phone cameras we’ve ever witnessed. Here are three photo samples taken with the XPERIA Neo.
