Writing literature reviews for PhD students

Bond library has the latest edition of Diana Ridley’s guide - The Literature Review. This text provides a step-by-step guide to conducting a literature search and literature review, guiding the reader in how to write up a literature review as part of a PhD thesis or Masters dissertation.

It offers PhD students practical strategies for reading and note taking, and guides how to conduct a systematic search of the available literature using cases and examples throughout - demonstrating the best practice in writing and presenting the review.

Contents include:

reading and note-taking strategies
reference management: organising information
literature review structuring
conducting a systematic review

Free images from the CSIRO ScienceImage archive

The CSIRO has released its ScienceImage archive under the Creative Commons Attribution license. This means that anyone can freely use, repost and modify items in the collection. The collection contains over 4,000 high quality images and videos of animals, technology, landscapes and many more subject areas. Some of the images and videos include information about the projects which involved the subject of the image or video recording.

The images are great for using in PowerPoint presentations to give it a professional look and feel. Using a high quality collection like ScienceImage to source images from will ensure you don't waste time trawling through clipart or armature images from Google. All you need to do is ensure you attribute the image correctly by adding a caption under the image and if required by your lecturer adding it to your referencing list.

Here is an example of attributing the CSIRO in the image caption:

Your thesis and the predatory publisher

If you are completing your HDR studies, or just starting your academic career as a PhD graduate beware of solicitous emails from predatory publishers that seek out authors of new theses.

The most dominating of these publishers is Lambert Academic Publishing (LAP) a subsidiary of VDM Verlag. Lambert specialises in the publication of theses, but is not considered a bonafide academic publisher as they merely reproduce theses without any editorial oversight, i.e. they do not apply the basic standards of academic publishing such as peer-review, editorial or proof-reading processes into their hurried production of theses into books. Lambert has been described as an author mill which bases its business on producing high price print-on-demand books for a large number of new PhD graduates sourced from universities around the globe, exemplified by many of the 106,602 LAP paperback books on Amazon(as at 11 Feb 2015).

As Lambert works on the basis of very fast, low production cost publications without applying any editorial quality controls the thesis is published ‘as is’, in exactly the same format as submitted to the university, where as the submission process requires, the digital version is placed into the university’s open access digital repository e-publications@bond. As with any publisher there is also the prospect of loss of copyright by the author. This should be taken seriously in the case of a thesis as any loss of copyright would severely curtail any further publishing spinoffs from the original work which could be the cornerstone of a successful academic career.

It is recommended that before accepting anypublishing offer you carefully research and evaluate the scholarly credibility of the publisher and their product and seek advice before making any decision.

RP Data login request procedure

CoreLogic RP Data is the largest provider of property information, analytics and property-related risk management services in Australia and New Zealand.

In order to obtain a login for RP Data students must read and agree to CoreLogic terms and conditions. Students are required to:

Read Clauses 18 to 22 of the General Terms and Conditions on the CoreLogic site.
Send a completed CoreLogic RP Data Agreement Form to library@bond.edu.au.

An RP Data login will then be sent to the student’s Bond email address.

Staff can contact the library directly at library@bond.edu.au to obtain a login

Please note that due to licensing restrictions access to the library's electronic resources is only available to current Bond staff and students.

News from the Law Library

During Bond Week new law students were able to compete in the Law Library Challenge - an interactive orientation game in which they had to find information and answer questions while exploring the Law Library.

All students who completed the challenge with enough correct answers went into the draw to win one of six textbooks donated by LexisNexis.

Marietta Gunn from LexisNexis made a special trip to the Law Library to present the books to the winning students:

Authors, University copyright surveys and the Copyright Agency

The Licence

As you may know Bond University has a ‘statutory licence’ with the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) which allows the copying of print and graphic works for educational purposes within limits. The CAL licence, as it is known, provides a system for university staff to reproduce copyright material for Bond University students without needing to seek permission from the copyright owner. This licence is also known as Part VB of the Copyright Act and the University pays a substantial annual licence fee for the benefit of the licence.

The Survey

Under the CAL licence the University is obliged to participate in a ‘Copyright survey’ every few years which requires selected faculties and departments to record the photocopying of published and unpublished work every day for up to twelve weeks. The University commenced a Copyright Survey on 8 December 2014 which continues until 1 March 2015 and during this time the Faculties of Business and Health, Sciences and Medicine, Sustainable Development and Architecture from FSD and various administrative units are being monitored.

Authors who have their work reproduced during a survey receive the benefits.

In essence the survey is held to gather information what copyright materials are being reproduced so authors can be identified and receive remuneration from the CAL. This remuneration is drawn from university, school and other collected licence fees.

The record keeping is not excessively onerous as the staff in the selected units only have to record published and unpublished material that is photocopied, i.e. copied from paper to paper. It is the published ‘copyright’ material that interests CAL and it is the author members of CAL that benefit.

Bond University academics as writers are potential recipients of CAL payments and if you are an author you may like to consider becoming a member of the Copyright Agency. Further information on becoming a writer member is available on the Copyright Agency website.

Another great semester is behind us, and it's time to take a break!
Now the holidays are here borrow some fiction off our turnstile on the mezzanine floor (Level 3) and enjoy some recreational reading.

Both the Libraries and MLC will operate on reduced hours over the semester break.

If you have never heard of lynda.com, it is a self-paced online learning resource for all staff and students to learn key skills in software applications and information technology.

Finding lynda.com on the Bond website is easy. Simply type lynda.com in the search box and your first result will link you to the portal. You will require your Bond single sign on username and password.

You then can search for courses or browse the lynda.com collection of tutorials. You will find tutorials on SPSS, Excel, Prezi, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, WordPress, Access, JavaScript, Keynote and more.

Remembrance Day - The 100 Year Anniversary of World War I.

Reinforcements. The Queenslander. 22 June 1918.

On the 11th November nations across the world will commemorate and remember those who sacrificed their lives during 1914 – 1918.

This is a special Remembrance Day Post by Tiffany Mitchell – Librarian at Bond University and State Library Queensland digital volunteer.

2014 marks the one hundred year anniversary period when the first Australian Expeditionary forces were sent to Egypt in September 1914. This commemorative initiative has been embraced by the National and State Libraries Australasia, as the First World War touched the lives of nearly every Australian at this time. The State Library of Queensland has engaged with communities and libraries across regional Queensland, in digitising photos, letters and ephemera, in helping Queenslanders learn more of the WWI Queensland story.

One stage of this digitisation project by the SLQ was to produce high quality scans of all issues of The Queenslander Pictorial, starting with the WWI period. The supplements from this period contained portrait pages – packed with up to 90 individual portraits per page. An existing index to WWI soldiers is currently being prepared for incorporation into the SLQ online catalogue. The searchable name index will be enhanced with links to the individual portrait of each soldier - putting the image into its context and also a link to the digitised issue of The Queenslander in Trove.

Twenty eight thousand individual portraits were extracted from The Queenslander Pictorial over four months representing the total Queensland contingent fighting in the First World War. Each miniature portrait found within the pages of this broadsheet, had their surnames listed in raw handwritten font and every single portrait page from 1914 to 1918 are listed with the same title: Reinforcements - an unfortunate military description of fresh faced boys and family men. This is the reason for reflection.

As one of three volunteers working with the manager of Collection Preservation and the Visual Media Coordinator at SLQ, we extracted thousands of these discerning faces from the digitised pages of The Queenslander, a legacy initiative by the Re-imagining Libraries program. This legacy program - QANZAC 100: Memories for a New Generation, is a five-year program that will commemorate 100 years of World War I and Anzac history. By digitising this cultural content, we create ease of access in making content available to a bigger audience, most importantly creating a lasting visual legacy.

The volunteer work at SLQ merged with a World War I project that was given to me whilst working at the Gold Coast Local Studies library. Donated photographs placed in the filing cabinet titled ‘Portraits’ have recently been researched, catalogued and uploaded to Picture Gold Coast creating a descriptive account of the pioneering Gold Coast family involvement in World War I. The Gold Coast region at this time was a burgeoning farming region of pioneering family communities. Over 100 men enlisted from here. One local family that paid the ultimate price was the Fulton family from Mudgeeraba, six of their sons enlisted and only three returned.

Bond Library staff member Angela Keena Bahrij has recently undertaken her own research on her family’s involvement in the First World War. By searching Australian War Memorial records she found digitised military information not previously known to her family.

From the National Library, Australian War Memorial and State Library Queensland to the Local Studies Library, and by Angela who followed these useful links – they all have gathered, nurtured and digitised portraits and personal material, creating a lasting legacy of the soldiers who went off on a brief adventure now to be a part of a much bigger story.

"From Gallipoli, then onto Egypt for further training before being shipped to France and the battle of Pozieres, where by attrition was ranked Sargent, only to die in the final battle of Pozieres. John’s body to date has yet to be found."

"All of John Hastings Carlyle Rowe is a small plaque….. Remembered with Honour… Viller-Bretonneux Memorial. He didn’t get to have a family like his sister did…his sister Dora named her first son John and the second son Lyal (Carlyle) my father."

Bloomberg Professional in the Main Library

We have the Bloomberg software installed on three computers on the ground floor of the library. If you would like to use Bloomberg, just talk to the staff at the Library desk to borrow a keyboard and find out where the computers are located.

Joanna Hare, the Business Faculty Librarian, can help you with setting up an account (free for Bond students). If you would like some training the Business Faculty offers 2 hour workshops every Friday from 10:00 am-12:00 pm on Fridays in the Macquarie Trading Room.

New ebrary reader

If you're a user of Library eBooks, you may have noticed that the ebrary reader has recently changed. The reader now has a sleeker design and simpler navigation panes. This 2 minute video shows you all the basics of the new layout:

Please note that the new reader is supported only on the two most recent versions of web browsers. In particular, it is not supported on Internet Explorer version 8 or earlier. Ebrary have also phased out their ebrary mobile app, and all mobile reading is now supported by the Bluefire app (available for iOS and Android).

We have updated our guide to eBooks at Bond Library to reflect the changes. Our guide also includes lots of general information about getting yourself set up to use eBooks, as well as platform-specific instructions for reading, downloading and printing from eBooks.
