End of the Year Craziness

So right now everything is crazy, I have been ending out the school year, working on dolls and orders which by the way is like soooo going to kill me I am backed up so much my head is spinning. 10 Secrets to Writing a Good Blog

1. DO write about what matters to you.

This is the first commandment of blogging. The most successful blogs are written by people who are passionate about their subject matter. When you write about topics that excite you, your writing will communicate a sense of energy that will attract like-minded readers. You'll also be more likely to keep on blogging, and won't abandon your blog after a few days or weeks.

2. DON'T take a too-formal tone.

Blogging is a more informal medium than print, and your writing style should reflect that. Blogging allows you to write in a casual, face-to-face tone, as if you were sitting down for a cup of coffee with your readers. One way to begin to develop your blog "voice" is to read blogs that resonate with you and study the ways in which those bloggers choose words that maintain a professional tone while still being warm and accessible.

3. DO edit yourself.

Hey, it's your blog, right? You can write a 2,000-word essay on what you had for breakfast, or wax eloquent about everything that is wrong with retail customer service. Don't do it. Once you draft your post, read through it for redundancies, irrelevant anecdotes or anything that isn't vital. You might find that you have enough material for 2 or 3 unique posts. Your blog isn't a book; make it lean.

4. DON'T use tired clich�s.

A clich� is a phrase that has been coined for so long that it has become boring. An easy way to turn off readers and make them move on to another site is to pepper your posts with clich�s like "right as rain" and "easy as pie." Take a minute to prune those phrases out and replace them with something fresh and original.

5. DO spell check your posts before you click "Publish Now."

TypePad offers a spellchecking function that makes it easy for you to have typo-free posts. Whenever you see a red line beneath a word, double check the spelling. Watch out for common misspellings that won't show up on the spellchecker, such as "your" versus "you're," "their" versus "there," and "principle" and "principal." For extra spelling help, use www.dictionary.com.

6. DON'T forget basic principles of good text layout.

Readability is one of the most important aspects of good blog copy. Use line breaks between paragraphs. Use sub-heads, preferably in bold type. Use italics for emphasis. Your goal is to draw the eye and create a smooth sense of flow throughout your post. Make it easy to read!

7. DO use lists. Most blog readers skim copy rather than read it all the way through.

One way to maximize your copy impact is to use lists. Bullet lists or numbered lists call attention to important points, and ensure that readers who are skimming will catch the most vital part of your post.

8. DON'T use the same format in every post.

Mix it up a little! Some might incorporate lists, while others might be more narrative. Some posts might include a lot of images, while others will be more copy-heavy. Don't do the same thing every time.

9. DO create descriptive headlines that let readers know what to expect from your posts.

One of the best things about blogging is that it allows you to be creative. Problem is, what is clever to you might be confusing to someone else. The best way to encourage more people to read your post is to write a compelling post title, and use subheads throughout your post.

10. DON'T sweat it.

Don't let these guidelines keep you from blogging � the most important thing is to keep writing. If you write with passion and conviction, you'll be able to connect with other people, and your writing will improve every time you post.

How to Sell an Item on Facebook

Take pictures of your item. This isn't necessary, but it helps when people are deciding to buy. Show the good condition of your piece or anything that makes it unique. If there are 10 coffee tables to choose from, try to make yours stand out.

Log into your Facebook account. On your homepage, find the Applications box on the left side of the screen. Click on the Marketplace icon. This will bring you to the homepage of the marketplace. On the main page, you can view listings from your network. Look around here to get an idea of prices and descriptions.
Click on the "Add new listing" tab at the top of the page. If you are selling anything, click "For sale." Housing is for people looking for roommates, Jobs are people looking for work, Free Stuff is what people are giving away and Other is everything else.

On the next page, get more specific about what you are selling. Click on the appropriate category. (If you are selling a book, click "book." Other options include furniture, tickets and electronics.)

Add information about your product. Make sure to include a description of the item and the asking price. On this screen, you can also upload a photo. Once you are done, click "Create listing." Now all you have to do is wait for someone to reply.

Pricing for Newbies

Imagine this: a beautiful jewelry studio, a soldering station, an anvil on a nice old worn wooden stump, a handmade jewelry bench, and on top of all this lie piles of finished pieces. Behind the bench sits a jeweler who has yet to sell a single one of her creations. What�s holding this talented artisan back? From my years of listening to your stories, putting a price on your work is one of the most intimidating first steps to selling, and delays many from opening their shop. I�m here to share my favorite pricing formula with you, and to break it down so you have the confidence to get out there and sell!

Know the Formula
Here�s my favorite formula:

Materials + Labor + Expenses + Profit = Wholesale x 2 = Retail

I picked this up from the amazing Megan Auman. What I love about this formula is that your profit is properly accounted for!

Now let�s go through every part of this formula and break it down.

Materials

Make sure to cover all your material fees. Often forgotten: the little things like the cost of thread, and the bigger things like the cost of packaging. If you�re going to �guesstimate,� err on the higher side!

Labor

If someone wanted to hire you and they offered you $7 an hour, what would you think of that deal? Be a good boss to yourself and do a bit of research. How much does a seamstress make in San Francisco? Find out! (Also remember, you�re probably more than a seamstress � you are the designer, the marketing department, the accountant, the janitor, and the administrative assistant, too.)

Expenses

Bubble wrap, that ebook purchased at 3 a.m., studio rent, bus passes required to make it to the studio every day, a new scale for your shipping station. How the heck can you fit all these things into the price of a single item?

Here�s a way to do that:

Jot down every expense you can think of � for example, include your Etsy fees, office supplies, rent or utilities.
Next, come up with the number of items you�d like to sell a month. Divide that number into the total expenses.
Tip: Start doing two things to help you come up with an even more exact price:

Track your expenses carefully so you can come back to this as you learn more about selling! I suggest trying out Outright � a free online accounting tool.
Start figuring out the big investments. How many items can you get out of that sewing machine? How long will that postage printer last before it needs to be replaced?

This is just in the preliminaries but I got an email the other day from a major publishing company and they asked me if I would write a how to book on making prim dolls with pics and some patterns for people to try out. So excited. I am going to talk with the man on Weds about how to get the ball rolling.....in a year or less you will see a book by mwah hopefully in all the major retail bookstores....
