Our summer has been very busy and super rewarding at the same time so far. Which technically summer hasn't actually started yet!

Jake is insane and is taking a summer semester as well as working full time at his internship. Being a proud wife I have to brag that Jake has really impressed the company. He really works hard but then always makes sure he makes time for his girls at home.

Most of my time is spent outside playing and on several long walks a day with Evelyn, which have really kept me in shape along with other stuff I have been doing. It's been great and I love seeing this little girl grow and expand. She has become quite the little talker lately and will have several conversations with herself which I think is the cutest thing ever. She puts a smile on anyones face who sees her whether it's at the grocery store, out on a walk, or at church (which by the way 2 months till nursery!!)

Here are a couple of pictures of our summer (very hot spring?) thus far.

This weekend my thoughts have been constantly turned to motherhood. To my grandmother's, to my mother in law, to my own mother, and finally to me. Motherhood is one of the hardest, but most rewarding things I could ever take part in, and I am so thankful that I get to be a mother to my little one. Mothers make so many sacrifices for their family and most of the time it goes unnoticed until you are older and are experiencing it yourself. I am so grateful for all those mothers before me who have helped shape me into the mother that I am today. I have a long way to go but I have so many wonderful examples to look to.

Happy Mother's Day all you mothers out there!

Planet Wise

Some of you don't know that we have used cloth diapers with Evelyn since she was born. We had several reasons to do this, some of which include saving some major $$, and Evelyn getting her dad's very sensitive skin. We have loved them and will continue to use them for all our kids.

For the longest time we had done the wet pail method (placing the cloth diaper in a closed pail of water). Super nasty. A while ago we have switched to a dry pail method and it has made all the difference. Now to get to the real reason for writing this...lets talk about Planet Wise. For all you other cloth diaper mothers (and fathers) out there you are probably familiar with this company. If you aren't then head over right now and check them out! They are wonderful. Well Planet Wise was very generous and sent me over one of their pail liners. They make them large so they pretty much fit any diaper pail or waste can. The actual size is 28" tall with a circumference of 54". This means it can fit either a 54 quart or a 14 gallon diaper pail or waste can.

^^This is our diaper pail. It has a container on the inside where we place the pail liner. Nothing too fancy but it does the job^^

One thing I've loved about Planet Wise's pail liner is that it keeps the smell in. Which when your doing cloth diapering...that's huge! Another thing that's great is it's reusable. When I do laundry, I just toss the liner in with the cloth inserts and everything gets clean. I had to constantly scrub our old diaper pail which was a pain so it's so nice to be able to just toss the liner into the laundry.

These bags come is so many different colors/patterns as well. Try about 30! We picked the raspberry color which I love. Click here to see the other colors and patterns.

The elastic around the liner is made from a very sturdy no pill elastic so you won't get any snags and it will stay looking really nice. The bags are also anti-microbal which helps fight the presence of bacteria, mold and fungi. They are also PVC free which is a pretty toxic material and you will never find it in any of the products from Planet Wise.

Pail liners are not the only thing they sell either! They have wet/dry bags, nursing covers, sport bags, changing pads, and reusable snack bags. I've been super impressed already and will continue to purchase from them. Thanks Planet Wise! You guys are awesome.

...you could have touching moments at the library?

Jake was home studying for finals so I thought I would take away this cute little distraction and go to the library. We picked out a couple of books and sat down to look through them. After a couple of minutes, a lady came by us with a group of handicapped boys to read books to them. Most of the mothers that were around quickly grabbed their children and went somewhere else. Not me. I watched Evelyn as she studied these boys, young men really. She grabbed one of her books, walked over to one of them and sat down right next to him, flipping through the pages of her book. A huge smile lit up across this young mans face. The lady told me that he loves little babies. He gave Evelyn a big hug, shook her little hand, waved and said hello. Evelyn giggled with delight. It was such a precious moment for me to witness. There was nothing different about these young men to Evelyn. Nothing to run away from.

These were new friends that she wanted to share her love of books with.

I love Dove. And here is just another reason why I love them. Dove has recently come out with a new video clip called Dove Real Beauty Sketches. I hope all you women out there take some time to go and watch it. As women we tend to be so negative towards ourselves. My nose is too big. My face looks chubby. I have too many freckles. I have a really long chin.

The list goes on and on.

This video is a great reminder that how we might view ourselves, is not how others view us. And that we need to focus on the things that we do like about ourselves.

14 months

Time for an update! Evelyn is now 14 months, loves to be outside and points at just about everything. She is just about the happiest baby I have ever met. She still only has two little teeth on the bottom but she is super close to having another two on the top. She is turning into such a big girl and loves doing "big girl" things. She loves any animal and knows several animal sounds. She is a very busy body and is constantly on the go, but when she does sit down, it's usually next to a pile of books that she likes to look through. I love this little girl so much and feel so blessed to be her mama.

Bean and corn stuffed peppers

I had seen a recipe for this a little bit ago using hamburger and another one using turkey. Since Jake and I are trying to eat healthy I decided to use turkey meat. I Seriously couldn't taste the difference....but maybe that's me. So here's the recipe for you all.

Ingredients:

3 sweet peppers, halved and de-seeded
1 cup of black beans, rinsed
1 cup of corn
1/2 onion diced
1 tbsp taco seasoning
1 cup of shredded cheese
1/2 lb ground turkey

First get your sweet peppers, cut them in half and clean out the inside. Place on a cookie sheet, drizzle some olive oil across them and place in the oven at 325 for 15-20 min.

While the peppers are cooking, cook the onions in a skillet and add the turkey and cook till done. Add the taco seasoning, corn and beans and cook for another 5 min or until done.

When peppers are done, place in a casserole dish, spoon the turkey, bean and corn mixture into each pepper, top with cheese and place back in the oven on broil until the cheese is melted.

And enjoy!

*I would probably add avocados next time I make this because avocados make everything better...almost. Also you could probably cook some rice or quinoa and add it to the mixture*

Our Easter weekend....

....a couple of days late.

We first headed out to Riverwoods and participated in a bunch of things they had there. The weather was perfect and there were little kids everywhere! Evelyn was in heaven.

Easter morning we had a little trail of easter eggs that went from Evelyn's room out to her easter basket! It was so cute to watch her follow the eggs, try to pick them all up, and put them in her basket.

^^Evelyn had a little too much fun with her basket and scattered stuff everywhere! It was so much to clean up...I'm still finding some in the carpet^^

We then went to church to celebrate Jesus Christ. The real meaning behind this Easter holiday. And we managed to take a couple of pictures with Evelyn in her easter dress.

Three generations....

that's what stands between Evelyn and her great grandparents. I feel so lucky that Evelyn gets to spend so much time with them. Learn from them. Play with them. It's probably one of the biggest perks of living in their basement. Most mornings the first thing she does is race upstairs as fast as she can, find grandpa, climb on his lap and sometimes, (if she's in the right mood) give him kisses. She makes them happy. And they both make her happy.

It's such a touching interaction to see.

No shampoo routine

I've gotten a lot of e-mail asking for my "no shampoo" routine so here it is! Sorry it's taken so long to get up here! I've almost hit my 30 day trial and I'm still hooked. For those we were wanting to try this but were not sure about it....I'd say do it! I've really liked it so far and my hair is loving me for it.

Buy your baking soda and apple cider vinegar. I've heard some people using organic apple cider vinegar, but eh...I'm cheap so Kroger it is.

I bought two water bottles to put each solution in. That way I made sure all of my hair was getting most of it instead of just pouring it on my head and most of it going down the drain.

Baking soda solution - 1 cup of water to 1 TBS of baking soda. Make sure the baking soda has completely dissolved. Also the solution should feel slippery in your hands. If it isn't, add another TBS of baking soda.
Apple cider vinegar solution - 1 cup of water to 2 TBS of apple cider vinegar. Shake to combine.

Next hop in the shower and wet your hair. Take your baking soda solution and spray it on your hair, mostly focusing on the roots. Give your scalp a good scrub, then rinse.

Then take your apple cider vinegar solution, spray on the length of your hair (not your roots), and focus on the ends of your hair. I pull mine up with a clip and let it sit while I wash my face, body, etc. Then rinse. I promise your hair will not smell like vinegar as long as you do a good job rinsing it out. It smells gross when placing it but my hair has never smelt like vinegar. If you really miss that yummy shampoo smell, you can place some essential oils in your hair brush if you want.

That's it! It's super easy and seriously....just do it! If you guys have any other questions, feel free to comment or shoot me an e-mail!

....Star Wars style! Okay I just come across this in my e-mail and had to post it for all my Star Wars nerds out there. My husband loves Star Wars and we usually have Star Wars marathons every once in a while. Granted we don't get very far and hardly ever finish them, (because we are old and fall asleep during movies) but oh well. Right now Best Buy is selling it for $9.99! Ha I am so thinking about buying it. Plus R2D2 is so much cooler than a fat naked man right?

My good little eater....

...is finally back! She just wanted to be a big girl and eat more finger foods. What the....my baby is a toddler?

When Evelyn was a baby, feeding her breast milk was always a little awkward because she was such a loud eater. She would "Mmm" after every gulp. Well the Mmm-ing hasn't stopped but it's not awkward anymore. It's pretty funny. And it totally reminds me of a scene in a very funny movie.

So funny right?!

Update on the "no-shampoo" method

Okay I really hate that it's called the "no-poo" method because I get really weird looks when trying to describe it to people, so on here it's going to be "no-shampoo" method. I have been doing this for 3 weeks now and have actually been really impressed. Some changes that I have noticed in my hair are, it feels lighter/more body, more of my natural curl has come back which is awesome, it is easier to style, and it just feels healthier all around.

Now when I was researching this, others talked about the "transition period" in where there hair was just super oily and awful because their hair was still trying to produce oil from when they were using shampoo. As of right now, I haven't really had a bad "transition period" with my hair. But maybe it's because I've done a couple of things to help with that.

Before I started this thing I really would only wash my hair every 4-5 days which I think helped. If you want to ease your way into this, start by cutting out the times you wash your hair. I also used a bristle brush to help distribute the oil from the top of my head down the hair shaft because that's where the oil tends to stay is near the scalp of your head. Always make sure to clean your brush every so often. Also if you don't have dry shampoo, go get some! That stuff works wonders.

If you have naturally oily hair to begin with, increase the amount of baking soda by 1/4. Also make sure when you are placing the apple cider vinegar solution, to avoid placing it on the roots. Now if your hair is more on the dry side, you might want to run a tiny, (and I mean teensy-tiny) amount of coconut oil through your hair after it is washed and dry. You can also do a deep condition mask with a NON oil conditioner. I've heard some people using aloe-vera gel for that one. Well this post is getting too long. Month 13

I am sooo behind on my monthly videos of Evelyn! So here is a quick update. Evelyn loves to walk around and explore everything. I bring her to the library often and she could be content, walking around, flipping through books for hours. She now has two little teeth on the bottom and boy does that totally change her cute little face! I have a hard time thinking she is not my baby anymore. She is a very curious, but happy toddler. She can tell you what a cow says, "ba-mooooo" and what a dog says (basically she just pants for this one!) Evelyn loves to plash in the tub and is always trying to escape to find great grandpa and go for a ride with him. This little one keeps me on my toes but I wouldn't have it any other way. She sure brings lots of love to our little family.

A weekend, library outing, and runny nose

This weekend was so great besides the fact that we were all sick. Jake didn't have any programs he needed to work on so Evelyn and I had a lot of time with Jake. We both love spending time with him. It was a quiet weekend. Even though we were sick we managed to get out of the house for just a little bit and go to the library (Evelyn's second home) when we knew a lot of people wouldn't be there. You can tell Evelyn is in her element when she walks into the children's section and starts pulling out books to flip through. The rest of the weekend was spend taking lots of bubble baths, and Jake and I taking turns being runny nose police. Boy does that girl hate having her nose wiped! I love when we get weekends like this. Spending time as a family is my favorite thing to do in the entire world. And when the time comes along when Jake isn't busy with homework, we grab it and go!

"No Poo" Method

Okay folks. I've been wanting to do the "no poo" method for EVER but have always been too afraid to do it. For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, the "no poo" method is where you get rid of shampoo and conditioner completely and use baking soda and vinegar instead. Sounds crazy right?! Well I am giving it a 30 day trial to see if I love it or ditch it.

Some of the ingredients that are in shampoo completely strip your hair of it's natural oils, leaving it squeaky clean. Sounds good right? Wrong. This causes your hair to overproduce oil for your hair. That is why most of us can only go a day or two with out shampooing our hair.

Here are some reasons I've found why "no poo" is great for your hair.

less oily hair
more body
less frizz and fly aways (great for those of you with curly hair)
added shine
more money in your pocked, because seriously how cheap is baking soda and vinegar?
no chemicals in your hair or scalp
new hair growth

So there ya go. I will keep your updated on how it goes and if it's something you should try, because it's fun trying new things!

My sister turns 22 today!

Today is my sister's birthday! She is 22 today which is so weird for me! I still feel like I am 21 sometimes! Ha. But obviously that's not true. Megan is such a beautiful person inside and out. And you can see it just by being around her. She has so many talents and loves to try new things all the time. She is a wonderful aunt and Evelyn loves when she stops by in Provo for a quick visit!

Happy 22nd birthday Megan! We love you and hope you have a fantastic birthday!
